The Bookies have the Dogs as only slight favourites:
Richmond $1.91
W.Bulldogs $1.84
We haven't beaten them in six years :P.
http://stats.rleague.com/afl/teams/richmond/allgames_tm.html#7
So another opportunity to tick another box by beating a side we haven't beaten for a fair while :gotigers.
Early thoughts on the game?
-
Big game for the doggies. Most of the focus would be on them IMO. Eade would be under some pressure to get another win on the board.
Positive for us is they have only beaten Brisbane Lions and GC so we have a good chance at winning IMO.
-
No Lake is a positive, he was the difference last time we got close to them. Jack is due for a big bag too.
Grimes on Hally :lol

Will Hall even play? Heard Hall and Higgins will be another week.....

Nothing would please me more than beating this team, I dislike them that much lol
This is what I believe to be the test, if we can beat the dogs convincingly and back up last weeks performance.

THE Western Bulldogs will be without star forwards Barry Hall and Shaun Higgins for at least another week while Tom Williams will also miss Sunday's clash against Richmond with an ankle injury.

Comments on that link are entertaining
Flogdog fans have already rolled over for the year ;D

I am not much of a gambling man but I reckon I'll put some money on us this week
-
Looms as a pretty dangerous game for us IMO, the have the wood on us and I can remember last year I think, our average losing margin to the Dogs was 45-50 points.
We must start this game in a frenzy, we simply can't let them get their tails up.

The AFL site is tipping us to win :o
SUMMARY
These teams are headed in opposite directions with the Tigers riding high with the confidence gained from a three-game winning streak while the Dogs are desperately searching for answers as they seek to end a three-game losing slide.
The Dogs will be without key defenders Brian Lake and Tom Williams with Lake to continue his quest for form and fitness in the VFL and Williams out with an ankle injury. Forwards Shaun Higgins (groin) and Barry Hall (ankle) will also be absent through injury.
The Tigers have no such concerns and any changes Damien Hardwick chooses to make will be unforced.
QUESTION MARKS
Can the Tigers reverse the trend of recent seasons? They've managed just one draw from their past eight encounters with the Dogs.
Can the Dogs overcome their form and fitness to scratch out a win? They're down on confidence because of those two factors, but four premiership points would do them the world of good and Rodney Eade won't be too fussed how he gets them.
PREDICTION
Richmond by 10 points

Certainly nice of Rocket to inform us who is definitely not playing so early in the week ;D :cheers

I would LOVE to give them an absolute flogging this week

Tigers eye Dog revenge

Wed 11 May, 2011
Richmond will snap a six-year hoodoo against the Western Bulldogs if it can defeat them in Sunday’s big Round 8 clash at Etihad Stadium.
To underline just how long ago that was, only four members of the Tiger team that day are still at the Club - current captain Chris Newman, Brett Deledio, Daniel Jackson and Shane Tuck.
Newman was playing his 57th game, Deledio his third game, Jackson his ninth, and Tuck his sixth.

Sportal's tipping the Dogs by 11 points...
WE THINK:
This shapes as an intriguing contest with big ramifications for both sides. The Dogs have just two wins this season and desperately need to find their top form if they are to challenge for a top four spot again this year. While for the Tigers, it will be a great measuring stick to see just how much they have improved.
In years gone by the Dogs would see this match as an ideal chance to improve their percentage. The past three times they have won by a combined 187 points and they have not lost to Richmond since the beginning of 2005.
But don't expect a similar result this time round. The young Tigers are playing with real belief and last week's win over Fremantle would have done wonders for their confidence. The Dogs, without some of their key players, look ripe for the picking but they still should have enough experience to get over the line a tight battle.
Western Bulldogs by 11 points.

Interesting stat: Bulldogs have won 5 out of 6 1st Quarters this season (ranked 1 in the competition), we've won 0 out of 7 (ranked 17th).

So, I'll conclude from this info that we are due to win one and that the Western Wannabees are due to lose one.
Problem is that we have a history of cracking under the pressure when a season-success-defining game is winnable,

I'd conclude from it that we're gonna be chasing our tails early on, although I reckon by 3 quarter time we could be in front. You're dead right about us cracking under pressure in these sorts of games though. This will be a big indicator as to how much we've actually changed as a club.

Exactly. If we can keep the margin to 2 or 3 goals at most, we're in for a chance. We were lucky last week that Freo couldn't kick straight.

As long as we win.
We seem to save the best for last.

not trying to preempt or belittle any win we may have and going by what has happened so far this yr we should start favorites regardless of who is out.
personally while im happy to concede we have improved i would much rather be playing all sides fully fit and in form so we can properly judge exactly where we are at.
what will it mean to beat an out of sorts side with most of its spine missing and its best small forward.
if we struck them in form and fully fit and rolled them now that would be a win to boast about.
win lose or draw im hoping we can play to a decent standard like we did against freo. they too were without several important players and have had a horror run this yr with injury. we cant complain about injuries and have been a bit lucky in striking sides with them.
anyway despite any of this i find it remarkable that we are not favorites. 7 games in and i cant see the dogs making the 8 too many players have slipped or are past it. with their outs we really should win this if we have improved.

THE Western Bulldogs resorted to a lawn bowling session to boost morale in the lead-up to Sunday's critical clash with Richmond at Etihad Stadium.

LOL. If they try bowling one nearest to Riewoldt it'll be 'Jack high' over the pack :wallywink

Hell, I bet they are fired up now... :lol

All the pressure is on them. The media build up. They will come out pumped. Glad to see Hall, Williams and Higgins not playing and that no neck has retired.

Does everybody remember the circumstances of that drawn game a few years ago? We were a goal up with seconds to spare, and a Dogs player (I've forgotten who) that wasn't a reliable kick took a pack mark a long way out on a tight angle.
Suddenly he feigned injury and had to be helped off (yet magically re-appeared the following week :lol). Equally magically, the player who stepped up to the plate to take his kick wasn't the nearest Bulldog player in the area, but their designated kicker (I think it was Will Minson) who sprinted over from about 30 metres away to kick the drawing goal.
Bloody Cheats!!! I say let's smash 'em this Sunday, and show the pr!#$ what long memories the Tigers have.

Lake took the mark and I don't think you can call 40 metres out on a 45 degree angle tight,
Ball was given to Minson

I've got a good feeling about this game dogs got few off field problems and not in good form hope we can role them

I was sitting behind the goal at that end. It looked like a pretty tight angle to me, towards the boundary and a fair way out. I still reckon Lake faked the injury so a better kick could take the shot. And how it wound up in Minson's hands who was miles away is a mystery to me.

Richmond $2.28

Hopefully the Dogs do go all defensive.
Morris says all 'Dogs must defend'
Roger Vaughan
Ninemsn
14:43 AEST Sat May 14 2011
Dale Morris will get by with some help up the ground from his friends.
The Western Bulldogs defender has emphasised the need for team-mates to clamp down heavily on Richmond's ball use in their AFL match on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.
With the Bulldogs defence undermanned because of injuries, coach Rodney Eade said on Friday that Morris will have the pivotal job of playing on Tigers full-forward Jack Riewoldt.
The Coleman Medallist looms as a nightmare for the 'Dogs backline, while Tigers small forwards Robin Nahas and Jake King are also in solid form.
This is a massive game for the Bulldogs, who are struggling on two wins from six games.
By contrast, the Tigers are building momentum and last week they upset Fremantle in a morale-boosting win.
"It's definitely a team defence and a team role to stop him (Riewoldt), because he's their beacon up forward," Morris said.
"If you can stop Riewoldt, it goes a long way to stopping Richmond.
"In saying that, they've had a couple of smaller guys bob up because teams have solely focussed on Riewoldt and nothing else.
"So it's a balancing act, but we need pressure up the field to limit supply to their forwards."
Morris' adaptability and strong form mean he will be a solid match up for Riewoldt, but it is also a sign of how the 'Dogs are having to plug holes in their backline.
Brian Lake remains in the VFL to regain fitness and Tom Williams is out because of an ankle injury.
Easton Wood also remains on the sidelines and Ryan Hargrave is having his first game back for the season after recovering from a foot injury.
Morris noted that in last few seasons, he and Lake, Hargrave and Lindsay Gilbee had formed the nucleus of a stable back six.
"This year it's been quite a different-looking back line - in previous years it's been quite settled, at least four guys down back," he said.
"Us four have played a lot of footy together.
"The injuries have hurt the back line a bit this year, but it's enabled other guys to step into that role."
One notable inclusion has been key defender Luke Markovic.
"He's really blossomed in that full-back position and he's taken the jobs on each week," Morris said.
"He has limitations, as we all do - he's working within his limitations and doing a very good job."
But how the 'Dogs must wish they could clone Rob Murphy - one to play off half-back and the other to create scoring opportunities across half-forward.
Their injury problems have meant Murphy, arguably their most important player, has switched from one end of the ground to the other during matches.
"It would be nice (to have two Murphies), he's very dangerous when he's up forward and when he'd down back, he provides a lot of creative run," Morris said.
"His energy up forward and down back is something we need and it's that flip of the coin, where do you play him?
"I love having him there (down back) with us."

Sounds like we are in for a Bulldogs "snore fest"! Hopefully the young uns can break the lines and show em how footy is sposed to be played.

Could be an interesting sort of game for the kids. A different sort of game and a good challenge.
-
Sounds like we are in for a Bulldogs "snore fest"! Hopefully the young uns can break the lines and show em how footy is sposed to be played.
With the sub and now 3 on the bench rotating rather than 4 it's much harder to maintain that low scoring lockdown type of footy for 4 quarters. Probably with the exception of Friday nigth's game most games this year have opened up in the second half. So if we are with the Dogs say halfway through the 3rd quarter then we'll be a good show to score heavily in quicktime as we've done many times this year in at least one quarter. As others have mentioned it's our first quarter that will be the key tomorrow. We can't keep allowing the opposition 10 shots on goal by 1/4 time and expect to still be in the game because the opposition miss gettable chances.
-

Yeah. Sounds like we're going to be treated to an afternoon of 36 players around every single contest -ala- Coll v Gee Friday night. Yippee, can't wait :(
-
Nason is the sub again for the 3rd week running.
-
Nason will need to be dropped back to Coburg soon simply to get gametime and maintain his fitness. You can't have a young player be the sub forever as they'll never progress.
Anyway have a big first quarter Tiges :gotigers

We've got back on an even keel thsi qtr after looking like we were going to be blown away. 5 goals a piece.

We won the quarter. :thumbsup
We need a second half like last week now.

Yeah cuz he's got a stuffing pea heart. I've never disliked a player as much as I do Graham. 200cm, 105kgs and he's an adonis yet is scared shi tless
-
if we can be within 20 points at 3/4 time we may be able to run over the top :gotigers
-
All you Graham apologists need to watch him closely. That effing girl has been looking Hudson at every bounce instead of the ball. Look at the ball and not the man FFS :banghead "Oh hes come on so nicely, ruckman take until they're 27 before they can play" eff off. Harden up Gus and play like the giant you are
Gus usually improves in the 2nd half of games.... :-X
He'd want to. His first half has been the useless marshmallow-based disgrace it always is. His one hard act has been smashing Nahas in a pack for no good reason. The sooner the useless lump of lard is dropped from our senior side the better - can't come quick enough for me.

Nahas 14
Conca 12
Deledio 12 ..... 9 that quarter
Cotchin 11
Foley 11
Grigg 11
Jackson 10
Martin 10
Houli 9

Batchelor 5
Helbig 5 ..... 1 goal
McGuane 5
Graham 4
King 4
Nason 4 .... subbed on 1st qtr
Edwards 0 ..... subbed out 1st qtr (injured)
Dogs have had 18 more disposals and 2 more tackles. So we out-tackled them that qtr.
Gilbee with 5 goals and Minson 3 to half-time :help
Boyd has 17 disp, Cooney 16, Hargrave 15, Ward 13, Cross 12, Gilbee 12, Liberatore 12, Murphy 11, Griffen 10, Minson 10
-
I stuffing hate Graham. Stupid decisions, can't kick, doesn't run, and looks at his man instead of the ball at ruck contests (HE DOES OK WHEN HE LOOKS AT THE BALL). Worst of all, there have been several situations where he's been completely uncontested in the ruck and knocks it straight down the throat of a Bulldogs player.
Get him out of the team. Now.
-
How the stuff do 2 bozos like Gilbee and Minson kick 8 goals to half time.

Dimma will lead us to a glorious victory I hope ;D :gotigers
It will be a glorious and famous victory if we win it from here as we've been crap and only played that last 10 mins at a competitive level.

We need to claw back some lead under 3 goals at 3/4 time and we are a big chance IMHO.

Got to love how a throw is called yet you can throw the ball in a tackle and it's play on these days ::).

Bugger St. Kilda, Carlton and Collingwood as teams i'd like to beat the most, it's now the Bulldogs for mine.
Boyd and Cross are the only hard men they have, Gilbee, Gia, Grant and Murphy are females, and we haven't been able to get close to beating them for years now.
Let's keep this to a 4 goal loss. :pray
-
Does Rance need contact lenses?
-
We need to stay competitive in the last. If we lay down now, all credibility and respect will be lost - again.
It's hard to see where the run is going to come from though. Looks like Nahas has a corky, Helbig & Nason are getting where the ball ain't and Martin looks like he's got ahead of himself. Cotch, Lids & Axel can't do it alone.
-
I thought Rance was meant to hard ::)
Fair to say all our key defensive posts need replacing. Maybe Grimes in time will be okay but McGuane and Rance aren't the answer. We are too short and small down back.
We simply need more class across the ground. Our list is nowhere near complete yet to go forward.
-
Jones is giving Muscles a lesson in the air. Grant doing the same to Batch.

We need to. Free agency is available at the end of 2012 so maybe we'll try to score a readymade one as key defenders are hard to find.

Helbig will become a big bodied mid. Conca could become a hard bodied/low center of gravity typ too. We'll need to keep finding mid yes but we need depth, quality and time everywhere. The Dogs beat us with superior size and experience rather than talent. If it was the other way around I'll be more worried. Losing to the dogs still eats away a me thoug :banghead

I'm wondering just what impact, if any, our smaller body size has on our ability to stem blowouts. It seems that we get pushed aside too easily in the contests in the middle of the ground.
Coupled with the problems we have winning the ball back inside 50.
You can't question our effort in the last, we're having a crack, but something's not right.
-
If someone had said we'd kick 118 points and get done I wouldnt have believed him. Anyway these things happen. No defensive pressure anywhere today.
-
We need 2 more star midfielders, 1 Star Key Defender and a Ruckman who knows what hes doing.

Yes agree, I dont want us to tank but we need to use the draft again. I still reckon the 17yo GWS picks are the prime picks. These are the picks we need to chase. We should do whatever we can to get 1 of these picks and get a premium midfielder.
-
You just can't keep giving sides head starts. Problem the size of the score kicked against us and the bulldogs weren't even at full strength. Another concern need to win more hard ball
-
Another poor first quarter cost us, Fremantle could have done the same had they kicked straight. One thing i would like to know in relation to free kicks for holding the ball is how many frees we actually get for laying the perfect tackle and being unrewarded compared to getting caught ourselves. It seems we pin one arm they drop the ball and its play on, we do the same and the umpire cant get the whistle in his mouth quick enough. Do agree overall our strength in the must win contests is letting us down but you expect that with a developing squad. Other than the first quarter i thought it was a good effort, past tiger teams would have lost by a 100 after the first quarter blowout.
-
Edwards going down certainly hurt us. Graham is useless. McGuane is useless.
-
Wonder how the tackle count finished up? Can't imagine we did too well. We didn't seem to be able to apply much pressure through the middle and on the wings. Doggies always seemed to have an extra man at the contests or on the overlap.
-
We need a ruckman. :gobdrop

Graham just isn't good enough for this level. Hopefully the saints see something in him as they saw in Plapp, Fiora, Pattison and Polo.
-
This Richmond team is yet to have that breakthrough win against quality opposition.
All sizzle and no sausage today.Way too much "over the top" positive publicity this week.
Stating the obvious....you cant give teams 50 pts start.
Hardwick may of been out coached this week.....Gilbee had 5 goals within the blink of an eye.
-
If asked, at the start of the season, whether, in a game that the dogs hit us with everything they have got, we
A: kick 18.10 and/or
B: be within 6 goals at the end,
would you have taken it?
I would have.
That result pretty much sums up where we are at.
It's been a long time since we have fielded a team that could absorb that sort of intensity from a top 4 contender and not get totally smashed.
-
Way too much "over the top" positive publicity this week.
Yeah there was Mat. Had a discussion about it at work earlier in the week and my 'take' was that they were deliberately trying to feed that publicity to expose the team to the hype that comes with being a good side that is expected to win. All learning curve stuff as they can now sit with them this week and highlight the difference (again) in talking the talk and walking the walk. The best sides handle the hype and we need to learn that just as we need to learn all the other elements of becoming a top side.
-

your probably right but it still is frustrating to be 2 goals down and just leak goals thru fundamental mistakes. But we only had 2 players that has played over 100 games, a ruckman that's just there and a young team that will only get better. :pray

Rance is way too small .

I cant see Hardwick getting rid of them both. I think McGuane and Thursfield will be the ones that go at seasons end myself. For some reason, Rance is well respected by the coaches and the playing group for his contributions.
-
wouldnt think that is the case, actually I know thats not the case ;)

Minson flogged them today, he is ordinary at best.
Our tall backs are a real worry and got exposed today BIG TIME
-
1) A minor setback. Won't hurt us in the long run.
2) 1st quarter cost us the game, and being genuinely in the hunt.
3) Graham. Simply, we need to do better and its screaming loud and clear. We can't continue to compromise centre clearances. forget bagging our backs, our centers put them under the pump.
4) Nason. Back to the burgers. Not big enough. Not strong enough.

The only answer I have WP is education. Like Dimma leaving Conca on Milne in round 2 despite Milne having a heap of shots.

defensive pressure in the front half and midfielders only running one way continues to be a major problem. This puts incredible pressure on a defence that is already brittle and lacking in experience (and class). Our midfielders really need to get on their bike and run hard defensively - our forwards generally have been doing a good job with their pressing - would count yesterday as an exception not the norm(perhaps we missed White more than some would have thought?)
I love our ball movement and forward running - we look very quick and dangerous but geez we need to become more desperate defensively - and FIX THOSE stuffing STARTS!!!

King $1200 fine for pushing the runner
What a joke, that runner is the one who should be fined. Fancy that, a waterboy getting involved in a blue.
My question is this: who needs a drink while they are wrestling their opponent?
-
This loss provided a good reality check. Lets not get ahead of ourselves. We have improved but there are alot of areas that we need to improve in It will take time eg the development of Grimes. To compete against good sides we need above all a good ruckman. Our defence is brittle. There are definite question marks over Rance and this year will determine if he can make it or not

It was a trainer not the runner and Jake has copped the correct whack for what he did; under the rules he faces a penalty
Nahas was fined for making contact with an umpire

Great, was it that bad..we just can't seem to start games well and we just can't seem to beat the Dogs.. :(

It wasn't that bad at all.
We matched the dogs for all important stats...except goals kicked.
Dimma admitted they were out coached in the first. The dogs continually went straight through the center, something they have not done all year, which caught us off guard continually opened us up. The coaching staff were too slow to react to the change in style, admitted by dimma as well.

I wasn't talking about the entire game al, just the first qtr.
The start was woeful and it cost us big time
Good sides can't afford to give starts like that, let alone young developing ones
-
I too was talking about the first quarter WP. It only seemed bad because the of the ease at which footscray scored when they went straight through the middle, something we were not expecting. Besides that we matched them for critical stats.
Once we rectified that we also matched them on the scoreboard for the rest of the game
-
The Bulldogs were very confident that they had our measure which is why they played the "corridor" that Hardwick mentioned we didn't expect.

Once we rectified that we also matched them on the scoreboard for the rest of the game
Fair enough al
To be honest I thought the game was gone after the first 20 minutes
Was glad we fought it out but at no stage (even when we got within 12 pts in the 3rd) did I think we were a chance of stealing the game, just leaked too many goals and didn't seem to have the answers to stop them scoring
