“I would always go after Cotchin”: Wallace

Former Richmond coach Terry Wallace says teams should make a concerted effort to target Tigers captain Trent Cotchin.

After Melbourne skipper Nathan Jones did a solid job of containing Hawthorn ball magnet Tom Mitchell, the question on SEN’s Time On whether he could do another blanketing job on reigning Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin.

While Martin has taken all before him in recent times, the three-time premiership Hawk believes nullifying the premiership skipper could be key in posing more questions to Damien Hardwick’s side.

“I would always go after Cotchin and that’s only from the utmost respect,” Wallace said on SEN's The Match Committee.

“You’ve seen in the past that he has been ‘gettable’ on occasions.

“As good as what he was in the finals campaign last year, but no one really went after him.

“He is the leader, don’t worry about that.

“Dustin’s the one who clicks the turnstiles but Trent Cotchin is the absolute leader of that football club.

“If you can take the leader down, sometimes it has an impact.”

This is where midfield options and particularly having Prestia in our side becomes important. If they target Cotch as Plough suggests, then we move Cotch forward and Dusty links with Prestia at centre bounces and stoppages in the middle.

Cotchin also plays a different game these days. He is much more inside. That is harder to tag.

Cotchin can also ruck, never heard of a ruckman being tagged before

It has me beat why Wallace thinks a tag on Cotchin would be that effective.

But at the same time, tags against any of our players are only going to be of limited value.

We don't channel our footy through key players, and we don't have guys who get 35-40 touches a game.

Wallace can talk till the cows come home.
He'll never coach again and he stuffed RFC up for over 5 years.
The game is past him.

Wouldn't make any difference these days, a few years ago yeah but we got too many serious contributors that can take the reins, simple.

None of our players are stats driven anymore. Cotch could have 18 possies, but if he obliterates a few Melbourne players as he cannonballs into a pack, he has made up for it.

Easier to put a tag on an outside receiver than an inside mid player.

Best way to beat an inside mid player is to get the ball first.....yes l know harder said than done.
