Match preview: Richmond v Greater Western Sydney
AFL.com.au
Sarah Black
Jul 9, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Sunday July 14, 1.10pm AEST
What it means for Richmond: A vital top-six scalp. The Tigers are yet to beat a team that currently sits above them, and with the Giants' patchy form both at the 'G and overall, the time is ripe.
What it means for GWS: Arresting an alarming form slump. The Giants have had a poor two weeks, losing to Essendon and Brisbane, and a rare win at the MCG will set them up well.
The stat: Richmond may have lost its past two games to GWS, but it holds the edge at the MCG. The Tigers have beaten the Giants on all four occasions the sides have met in Melbourne, the last match coming in the 2017 preliminary final.
The match-up: Jeremy Cameron v David Astbury
Cameron had a day out and a half against an inexperienced Ryan Garthwaite last time these sides met, but Astbury will be tougher. The Giant is his club's number one forward in the AFL Player Ratings (No.113 overall), with Astbury the Tigers' third key back (No.314).
It’s a big week for: Dustin Martin
Martin was poor against GWS last time the two sides met, succumbing to the tagging pressure of Matt De Boer and getting suspended for striking. With De Boer injured on the sidelines, Martin will be relishing the opportunity to rebound and put in a dominant performance.
Big call: Trent Cotchin will be determined not to lose to the Giants again and will dominate the clearances, recording 10 by himself.
Prediction: Tigers by 12 points

GWS has been dealt a blow with star midfielder Josh Kelly ruled out of Sunday's crucial clash with Richmond at the MCG.
The good news for GWS is he is to be replaced by Lachie Whitfield after missing four games with a broken collarbone.
Vice-captain Stephen Coniglio should also be fit for the trip to Melbourne after he was cleared of a serious knee injury.
Ruckman Shane Mumford is also expected to come into the team after he pulled up sore from the Giants' round 15 loss to Essendon and was rested against the Lions.

Whitfield and Mummy are their 2 most important players IMHO.....

Yep those ins more than make up for Kelly missing... :shh

They wouldn't be talking like this if they weren't spooked by the 'G.
---------------------------------------------------------------
GWS go into Saturday’s match facing an imposing record - the Tigers have beaten the Giants in all four of their clashes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Giants defender Sam Reid touched on the mental side of footy ahead of the game with Richmond.
“This week’s going to be more mental - make sure we’re mentally sharp and we’re fresh.
“Physically, you’ve got to get your prep right and you’ve also mentally got to get your prep right.
“This week, players will be spending more time mentally making sure they’re sharp and ready to go.”
Reid emphasised the emotional side of footy, and how the past two weeks have been felt by the players.
“It really hurts when we lose - we were gutted on the weekend, we’re very disappointed. It’s two weeks in a row. It hurts, it sticks with us.”

Dusty won't have to worry about De Boer either this time around.
--------------------------------------------
Since de Boer suffered a serious shoulder injury against Gold Coast in round 11, the Giants have lost three of their four matches.
In those defeats, they've been hurt by the opposition midfielder that most likely would have been the former Fremantle stopper's main target.
Adelaide's Matt Crouch (round 12, 34 possessions) and Essendon's Zach Merrett (round 15, 28) – who was shut down by de Boer in the season opener – enjoyed their midfield freedom against the Giants. Last week, it was Brisbane ball magnet Lachie Neale (31) who was highly influential.
When GWS belted the Tigers by 49 points in round three, de Boer frustrated Dustin Martin out of the contest, so much so that the Brownlow medallist was reported for striking Adam Kennedy and suspended.
The Giants will face Martin again on Sunday and will also have guns like Trent Cotchin, Dion Prestia and Shane Edwards to deal with.

No Mumford is good for us. They all walk taller with him in the team..... :shh

Anyone heard if Coniglio is in any doubt?
He must be sore, a nice early tackle to test out that knee will be required if he does play

"That starts with Richmond on Sunday.
"They're getting players back, their form is rising, and it's at their home ground.
"It'll be the world against us down there. That's a situation we've been in before, and we haven't gotten over the line.
"There's no bigger challenge, and our boys are looking forward to the opportunity."

From Damien Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column:
IF ... the ladder position (6th) looks good given all the injuries, and with Caddy and Riewoldt to return for this game against the Giants ...
THEN ... that's all positive but I've still got a lot of doubt.

Barrett doesnt understand that irrespective of whatever happens in 2019 its been a successful year for us anyway. We will make the 8 maybe top 4 and we found a truckload of young players like Stack Balta Eggmolesse Ross for the future.

Exactly, and we still have potential talent to come into this side too.

Massive game today. Win and we jump up to 5th only % out of the top; lose and we could fall outside of the Eight and back into the pack.
Going to be won at the coalface and winning the territory battle. K.I.S.S wet weather footy and take our chances in front of the sticks.
-
Coniglio out in the first minute. Knee
-
Stack to Jack back to Stack who shimmies and goals :gotigers. What a gun!
Rich 1.0-6
GWS 0.1-1
-
Coniglio out in the first minute. Knee
Huge loss for them. Not just today but for the season.
-
Advantage umpire?
-
Nice toe poke by Prestia to Dusty 55 out. To an open goalsquare but misses.
7 - 1
-
Shaw kicks it OOTF. We go long to the square. Lynch does well to bring it to ground but Sheds misses.
8 - 1
-
Stack almost another one. Hits the post.
9 - 1
-
Shocking kick George. We were out too :banghead.
-
Lynch getting away from Davis. Nice kick to jack = Goal! :gotigers
Rich 2.3-15
GWS 0.1-1
-
Prestia 5 clearances in the first 20 min :o.
Hopper pinged for HTB. Free to Bolton 25 out on a tightish angle. Kicks it! :gotigers
Rich 3.3-21
GWS 0.1-1

-
Another clearance from the stoppage. Gets to George who kicks to the goalsquare. Lynch goals :gotigers.
Rich 4.4-28
GWS 0.1-1

Gutsy mark Bolton in defence :clapping.
-
Robbed by the siren.
Quarter time
Richmond 4.4-28
GWS 0.2-2
Goals: Riewoldt, Lynch, Stack, Bolton.
-
Confirmed Coniglio is out of the game with a knee injury.
-
Dominated that quarter in most areas inside and outside. We're too quick on the spread for them so far.
Outsmarting them tactically. If they bring an extra to the contest then we play the spare man in defence. If they even it up then we're winning the clearances.
Prestia brought his own footy. Bolton and Ellis having good games so far too.
-
Honestly Rioli needs to FO to the VFL for a stint fmd
-
That was a mark to Rioli, ump :banghead.
-
That was a mark to Rioli, ump :banghead.
Criminal...
-
Grrr! Sloppy start to the 2nd. Goal to them.
28 - 8
-
Broad is terrible
-
Here we go with the bruise free l, tap, tap, tappy crap instead of taking possession and using it effectively.
-
Lucky Greene missed that. We need to regain control.
28 - 9
-
Overpossessing by hand and stuffing up :banghead.
-
That's better and cleaner. Good finish George :gotigers.
Rich 5.4-34
GWS 1.4-10
-
Floss to George. 35 out. Misses.
35 - 10
-
Coast to coast. Chol marks 35 out. Goal! :gotigers

GWS 1.5-11
15 min Q2
-
brandon ellis fantastic!
-
On transition again inside 50. Chol snap from close range misses though :-\.
They then go coast to coast for a goal :banghead.
42 - 17
-
Shai Bolton has had a strong half this afternoon with 17 disposals, six handball receives, six contested possessions, three clearances, 164 metres gained and a goal.
https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2019/17/rich-v-gws#/summary
-
Pathetic defending. No one on the goal for us to touch it :facepalm :banghead.
42 - 23
-
Another to them. Straight out of the centre.
42 - 29
Losing it in the guts this qtr. Their workrate has lifted and ours has dropped off.
-
Getting smashed at the centre bounces. We're having to set up all attacks from HB.
-
It's wet weather footy Tiges. Territory matters.
-
Ellis on the run from 49 misses to the right. Jack not happy.
43 - 29
-
Half-time
Richmond 4.4 6.7-43
GWS 0.2 4.5-29
Goals: Riewoldt, Lynch, Stack, Bolton, Castagna, Chol.
-
Their mids dominated that quarter with Whitfield running around unopposed for most of it.
Reckon they had the wind that quarter.
-
Need to fix up the stoppages and contested footy. Got owned that quarter. They had the numbers at the fall of the ball and won the clean clearances putting us under pressure and starving us of the footy forward of centre. We only got goals from defensive-half transition.
-
Getting smashed at the centre bounces. We're having to set up all attacks from HB.
True.
They clamped down on Prestia that quarter and no one else stood up for us in the middle. Martin and Cotchin have been very poor And not clean with their disposal in close.
Our pressure in the first wasn’t there in the second. :banghead
They also are working through Eggs and he’s not coping too well.

They also are working through Eggs and he’s not coping too well.
Agree. Cotch and Sheds only 7 possies each to half-time while Prestia barely touched it after having about a dozen possies in the first. Our leaders all need to lift. One of them if they are getting it themselves should lock down on Whitfield.
Eggy's opponent Daniels is proving dangerous. Stack didn't touch it much that qtr either so we may have to throw him down back if the Eggy-Daniels match-up gets out of hand.
-
Ellis snap misses.
44 - 29
Need to take our chances, Tiges!
-
Deliberate paid against Shaw. Soldo asked to take it by the ump when Jack wanted it. Banana misses.
45 - 29
-
Point to Whitfield.
45 - 30
-
Cut out the short handballs in the wet weather :banghead.
Turnover and they get the goal :banghead
45 - 36
Freaking dumb footy.
-
Lynch threads it to Jack but he misses.
We get it back. Lynch to the goalsquare and it's rushed.
47 - 36
We're missing while they are taking their limited chances :banghead.
-
Lambert, 50/50 ball in the middle, 1 against 4 and elects to tap it instead of taking possession. Leads to an easy goal to them!!!
-
Finally!
Bad kick-in by the Giants and Lambert goals. We'll take it!
Rich 7.11-53
GWS 5.6-36
-
Free kick set shot to them. Thankfully Daniels misses everything.
-
Too easy for them, Tiges. Where's the pressure?!
53 - 42
-
We are going to get overrun if we keep up this run and gun style. They are getting several players ahead of the ball sweating on our turnovers.
-
Cut out the cute handball Tiges (Sheds mistake then).
-
Edwards... WTF... take possession!!!
-
Grimes to Ellis to Stack at HB. Goes long and it's turned over. They run it down for a mark and set shot to Himmelberg. Misses thankfully.
53 - 43
-
Coast to coast. Cotch gets a boot and we're out. Gets to Jack short pass to Rioli. 45 out. Misses to the left :scream.
Our freaking goalkicking today :banghead.
54 - 43
-
Floss to broad on the wing. Short to Bolton who slips. Floss's spoil saves the day. Rioli to HF. Bolton to Cotch to George. To the hot spot and Lambert alone marks. 35 out. Misses as well :banghead.
55 - 43
-
Cotch cleaned up a Whitfield fairly.
Chol nicely weighted kick for George to run onto and mark. Stupidly plays on but kicks it anyway :gotigers.
Rich 8.13-61
GWS 6.7-43
-
Honestly 13 behinds keeping them in game we are.Look up hit our forwards not bomb it keep it simple no fancy crap.
-
Cotch extracts it in traffic. Jack wins the 50/50 to Rioli 1-2 with Stack to Dusty and goes to Lambert who pushes forward and marks. 40 out. Goal! :gotigers
That's better kicking.
Rich 9.13-67
GWS 6.7-43
-
Lynch mark on the siren. Goal! :gotigers
5 goals up at 3/4 time.
-
Lynch having a ripper
-
Great mark and goal from Lynch. Great hard running to finish the quarter.
We should have put the game to bed early though.
Whitfield out for the rest of the game?
-
3/4 time
Richmond 4.4 6.7 10.13-73
GWS 0.2 4.5 6.7-43
Goals: Lynch 2, Lambert 2, Castagna 2, Riewoldt, Stack, Bolton, Chol.

Point to them at the other end.

Love how the commentators defend Green, push or no push from Edwards it’s a closed fist punch to the guts and those same muppets want to see that eradicated by suspension... so, if you can get rubbed out for a week, it’s a free kick too!

Another point to them.
88 - 53

Goal to them.

Excellent win.
-
A bit untidy at times and overused the ball a bit considering the wet weather but amazing win. Champagne football in the first quarter. The chemistry between Riewoldt and Lynch was what I loved the most
-
Thought Lynch was very good. Used his bulk and had some real presents up forward.
Smashed the packs and got his hands on the footy.
-
Lost contested footy, inside 50s (just) & clearances yet still had almost a 5 goal win.
Very even team performance. Just one Tiger with single possession stats (Soldo).
