Glenelg Tiger Coulthard becomes a Richmond Tiger
By Richmond Media

Glenelg small forward Matthew Coulthard has joined Richmond via the Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
Richmond has used its first selection in the 2023 Mid-Season Rookie Draft (No. 4 overall) to recruit Glenelg small forward Matthew Coulthard.
Coulthard has shot into AFL list contention in 2023, standing out in his first three SANFL matches for Glenelg since crossing over from local club Port Noarlunga.
The small forward showed his talent with an eye-catching four-goal performance in a low-scoring, wet-weather game against Central District on the weekend.
The 22-year-old is known for his high work rate, speed, and football IQ.
Recruited from: Glenelg
Position: Small forward
Height: 176cm
Weight: 69kg
What the Richmond recruiters say about Coulthard...
"A small forward, outside midfielder, Matt has progressed to the Glenelg league team in 2023. Originally recruited from local team Port Noarlunga, he has displayed a high work rate, speed and footy IQ to become a dangerous forward option centre forward. His ability to work up the ground, then back to goal at high speed to the fall of the ball and impact at the contest has been a highlight in all his senior football in the SANFL this year.
"Matts instinctive pressure and defensive qualities has been impressive and something we feel can add great value to our list.
His ability to impact in the front half through score assists while also hitting the scoreboard himself is of high quality. He can create with his hands off the contest, while using his foot skill to set up others around goal. Matt highlighted his improvement with a match winning dour goal performance at league level last weekend for Glenelg against Central District in heavy conditions.
"Matt will provide a great addition to our front half group with his goal sense, pressure and aerobic capacity."

lmao....4 goals in 9 games ...another dynamic space guarding midget... :shh
:facepalm :lol :shh
-
Exactly the type we need. His 4 goals are stats from this year and his highlights has showed he's played up the ground a bit. Can't see his size being up the ground at AFL. Reads packs well. Perfect for T Lynch combo.
Gives me a bit of Shane Edwards vibe.
-
Gives me an Alroy Gilligan vibe..... :shh
-
Is he indigenous anybody know?
-
Will take a wild stab and say yes he is. :shh
-
So Coulthard & Mansell eh? Are we moving from Punt Road to Albert Park? :shh
-
Gives me an Alroy Gilligan vibe..... :shh
:lol :lol
We can call his forward pocket Gilligan’s island

4. Richmond - Matthew Coulthard
Glenelg SANFL
Small forward
176cm/69kg
11/05/01
A small forward with elite crumbing ability, Coulthard is a speedy and dangerous player in the mould of Geelong's Tyson Stengle. Originally from local club Port Noarlunga, the 22-year-old only became eligible for the mid-season draft a matter of days ago, when he played his third SANFL game of the season and passed the eligibility threshold. The fact he kicked four goals in that game in wet conditions no doubt boosted his case and the Tigers have swooped.

I hear he’s as fast as Usain Bolt and has incredible goal sense, farts goals from the pockets in his sleep. :shh
-
I think he’s worth the punt.
Pace and defensive forward play have been non existent for a number of years.
Back in the day, Georgie was able to do both and avg a goal per game.
That would work nicely.

lol.

PICK 4 - RICHMOND - MATT COULTHARD (GLENELG)
22, Forward, 176cm, 69kg
Wow a serious surprise here from the Tigers. A SANFL small forward from Glenelg, this is an interesting pick that noone saw coming. He only became eligible for the draft over the weekend after playing his third SANFL game.
Chris Cavanagh says: A mature-aged small forward, Coulthard has impressed in the SANFL this season both at reserves and senior level. He kicked four goals from eight disposals last weekend in his final audition.

We got our priority type, You guessed it a small fwd and with our first pick. He can join a long list of small forwards that we have.
What on earth are they thinking. Then they follow it up with a hbf it is so funny.
Obviously there were no talls or mids worth looking at well not according to us.
Just stating the obvious here, after each of our picks there was talls available and mids. But wait we are brimming with talls and mids none are worth looking at or giving a chance to.
Nope we have key fwd covered for many years to come with JR, TL and Bradtke who they can't see fit to play despite injuries and all. or Bauer who we cant see fit to even play as a fwd. We are rolling in riches here people, obviously we dont need to take a few punts on talls lol.
Nope we took the small fwd and the hbf of which we must have a dearth of!!! and of course they dont have deficiencies so we just had to take em lol.
They are all, sml, med, tall basically picks who have been overlooked before. if we are chasing a superstar with any of them then we are indeed deluded. So why not take THE PUNT ON A NEED.
People wonder why i take the pee out of them. How long can they just go on and basically ignore severe list shortcomings and get away with no criticism from most supporters.

Twomey's summary:
Pick 4 - Richmond - Matt Coulthard
“He kick four goals on the weekend for Glenelg, he's a small forward.
“He's got the Tyson Stengles about him, that’s the type of player I'd call him.
“He's more of a chance to be playing soon because he is 22 years old.
“He’s 176 centimetres and really crafty at ground level.”

Coulthard to make AFL debut as substitute
Matthew Coulthard will make his AFL debut this weekend against Hawthorn as Richmond's substitute.
By Richmond Media
20 July 2023
Less than two months after joining Richmond via the Mid-Season Rookie Draft, Matthew Coulthard will make his AFL debut this weekend as Richmond's Round 19 substitute.
The debut completes a rapid rise for the 22-year-old small forward, who was Richmond's first selection (No. 4) in the May draft.
Coulthard arrived at Tigerland from Glenelg after just three senior SANFL matches in 2023, which included an eye-catching four-goal performance against Central District in May.
He has made his presence known straight away, kicking four goals in his opening six matches in Richmond's VFL side, his high work rate, speed and pressure all key features of his game.
"I'm really liking the progression that he's showing in his first few weeks at the Club," Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris said of Coulthard recently.
"He's definitely getting to know our system and our structures and the excitement he brings is profound."
Coulthard will be the fourth Tiger to make their AFL debut this season, following in the footsteps of Tylar Young, Sam Banks and Jacob Bauer.

Welcome to AFL footy! :thumbsup
Off the top of my head, I reckon he was involved in at least three of our six last quarter goals after he was subbed on. Picked up the tempo straight away, showed poise and composure with his decision making, and was clean by hand and foot. You can't ask for more from a debutant. Well done, Matty :clapping.
-
Very impressed. Wasn’t overawed
-
He was brilliant. Has to play full games now. Jnr RIOLI has work to do now if he wants to play fwd, but I'm inclined to try him as an attacking tagger on ball.
-
Looks to be a very good field kick which is a nice change from our pressure fwds over the past few years. Think he’ll be in the 22 next week.
-
Sparky sub impresses on debut
Mid-season recruit Matt Coulthard came into the game halfway in the third quarter, but really kicked into gear at the start of the fourth term. The lightly built South Australian played key roles in Richmond's first two goals after the final break, finding plenty of space and showing a nice pair of heels and some key composure to find teammates in front of the big sticks.
7 disposals (4k, 3h, 2c, 6u, 100% eff.)
1 mark
2 tackles (1 F50 tackle)

3 score involvements
1 goal assist

What a qtr. Has earned his right to play a full game and beyond.
-
Well done Matt,
-
Substitute Matt Coulthard provided some much-needed spark in his first game, coming on in the third quarter and bringing some zing to the half-forward line, setting up two fourth-quarter goals.
"I'm just rapt for him. They took (forward Denver) Grainger-Barras off, so we took (defender Tylar) Young out of the game as a tactical substitution," MacQualter said.
"Matty showed us what we've seen at VFL in the past five weeks. His run and work-rate, he really connected our forwards a few times. He really gave our players some energy coming on, as well."

Excellent debut, especially considering he was the sub.
Showed more poise in his TOG than some his seasoned team mates

Was great i thought. If he doesnt play we may not have won that last quarter

Strong mark, lethal kicking. What's not to like.

Clawski where are you mate I wanna know what you think

I like to look for something I like when I see a youngster for the first time.
I liked the way he was sure of what he wanted to do. Not timid at all.
He didn’t have a huge amount of game time but he certainly made the most of his opportunities and took the game on to create scoring opportunities for the team.
Couldn’t ask for much more than that :clapping
-
Don't get too carried away, Claw hasn't given us his opinion yet

The step up to AFL football
“Just felt like all it was, was just playing my role. At the end of the day, that’s all it was. That’s what they got me in for . . . to use my speed and what not. So, that was good.
Tom Lynch’s influence
“He’s (Tom Lynch) been amazing, he’s just such an idol of mine, even before I came to the Club. To find out I was living with him, that was unreal. So, learning from him, living the same lifestyle as him, was unbelievable.”
- Matt Coulthard.

The Tiger who went from Happy Valley to the MCG in three months
Peter Ryan
The Age
July 25, 2023
On April 15, Richmond’s Matt Coulthard pulled on a yellow and black jumper to play with Happy Valley at Bice Oval, Christies Beach in the Southern League in South Australia.
Just three months later, mid-season draft magic occurred as he was named as the sub for Richmond against Hawthorn.
On Saturday afternoon, the 22-year-old ran along the MCG wing, took two bounces and hit his Tigers’ teammate Dustin Martin on the chest with his first kick before following up to receive the handball and land the ball in Trent Cotchin’s hands.
News of Coulthard’s impact travelled quickly to Happy Valley’s coach Guy Ridgway, who was standing on the boundary line 725 kilometres away from the ’G.
“He’s a fantastic kid. He has really grabbed hold of an opportunity and is running with it. A few of the guys were giving me updates on what was happening,” Ridgway said.
Coulthard’s rapid elevation from local football to being in the circle singing Richmond’s theme song happened slowly.
Word had filtered through to Richmond early in 2022 that there was a player at Port Noarlunga too good to be playing SA’s Southern League. His name was Matt Coulthard, a player the Tigers had seen as a junior with South Adelaide as he bounced between there and Port Noarlunga where he played close to 100 club games, but not much since.
But before the Tigers could watch him he hurt his ankle, his season ending after just three games.
By the first round of 2023, Coulthard was at Glenelg, again in yellow and black, playing reserves against Sturt.
By then the Tigers well and truly had their eye on him.
He gained permission to return to the Southern League for a kick with Happy Valley as it was a Gather Round weekend, and he had missed the previous week through suspension.
“He was an excitement machine. He sat on a couple of shoulders and was a class above. It was good for him to come out and play and the boys saw him in action,” Ridgway said.
Back with Glenelg he impressed, but he needed to play three state league games to be eligible for the mid-season draft. Another bye for a state game made it tight, but he just squeezed in when he kicked four goals on the weekend before the Tigers used pick four of the mid-season draft to add him to the list.
It was his third debut for a different club this season – all with yellow and black jumpers, all rapt at the chance the speedster has taken, working through the grades from local football to the MCG in one season.

Clawski where are you mate I wanna know what you think
Hello there im here .
Hmm on him. Thought he was great for a kid. Gave us badly needed run/spark . Hope we play him in a role where he has freedom of choice if you like.
Would like to see Brown get a go before him though and think Dow really needs a block of games.
Another small as well sooner or later we will need to play and DEVELOP taller players.
Based on that cameo definately a keeper atm.
What people dont grasp is who do we play him instead of. not another kid i hope, but a kid along side kids.
That means a hard decision on someone like say Jayden Short. The other question is clearly what role? do we keep him free or do we pidgeon hole him into say a fwd role where it seems flair and skill take a back seat to mediocrity.
Probably did enough to warrant another game this week and to be honest have forgot about him in my team selection this week.
-
Coulthard keeps it cool
Talk about immediate impact ... Tigers sub Matt Coulthard, playing in just his second game after being taken by the club in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft, came on to the ground in the third quarter and within his first minute, had calmly snapped an impressive goal - his first at AFL level. The Tigers shared the love up forward, with 11 individual goalkickers contributing in the disappointing loss.

Thoughts on Coulthard after first full game?
12 disposals (8k, 4h, 8c, 5u, 41.7% eff.)
1 mark
3 tackles (2 F50 tackles)
3 clearances (1 centre clearance)
3 inside 50s
225 metres gained
1 intercept
3 score involvements
2 behinds
70% time on ground.
-
Did alright in a well beaten side playing a position that doesn't lend itself to shining in heavy defeats. Disposal was a bit disappointing but it's a big step up from a cameos - one against a tiring bottom 4 side the other in a competitive match against a flag contender just moving through the gears and playing a full game against a desperate top 8 side that's dominating all over the ground. :shh

TIGERS TIE UP MID-SEASON RECRUIT
Riley Beveridge
afl.com.au
10 August 2023
RICHMOND has rewarded mid-year recruit Matt Coulthard for a bright start to his AFL career, locking away the former Glenelg small forward to a one-year rookie extension for next season.
The Tigers claimed Coulthard with the fourth pick in this year's mid-season rookie draft, having made an impressive start to the SANFL season with Glenelg where he booted eight goals from six games at both senior and reserves level.
He has since played three AFL games, impressing as the tactical substitute on debut to pick up seven disposals and three score involvements in just one quarter of action against Hawthorn.
As revealed in AFL.com.au's Inside Trading in June, only three of the 13 players to have been recruited in the mid-season draft – Ryan Maric, Robert Hansen jnr and Clay Tucker – nominated for 18-month deals.
The remaining 10 players nominated on six-month contracts through for the rest of this season, with Coulthard's one-year extension making him the first player from that batch to extend beyond 2023.
