Don’t discount Richmond superstar Dustin Martin joining that select group in just over a month’s time.
Martin racked up a record 36 votes in winning the Brownlow last year, and while his 2018 season hasn’t been as dominant, it’s still been very good.
He’s averaging 25.1 disposals, 5.8 inside-50s and 5.2 clearances per game, has kicked a total of 29 goals, and is ranked first in the competition for inside-50s, first for score involvements and second for centre clearances.
There’s every chance Martin would have polled three Brownlow votes for his strong showing against Essendon at the MCG last Friday night – 26 disposals, 10 marks and four goals.
I reckon he’s in the low 20s for votes with one round to go – and that would put him right in the frame for back-to-back Brownlows.
Given the fact Richmond has won 17 games, there’s going to be plenty of votes awarded to Tiger players. And, the fact is, Dusty is a proven vote-winner.
There have been six players who have won back-to-back Brownlow Medals in the history of the game’s most prestigious individual award – Fitzroy’s Haydn Bunton (1931-32), Essendon’s Dick Reynolds (1937-38) and Bill Hutchison (1952-53), St Kilda’s Ian Stewart (1965-66), North Melbourne’s Keith Greig (1973-74) and Robert Harvey (1997-98).

THE BROWNLOW Medal for 2018 is looming as one of the tightest contests in history.
Seven players are in the running to win the award going into round 23, according to AFL.com.au's Brownlow predictor.
Furthermore, Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe could finish with the most votes, although his one-match suspension for striking Collingwood hard nut Levi Greenwood in round 11 means he's ineligible.
With one home and away game left, reigning winner Dustin Martin sits ahead of the field on 22 votes.
On 21 are Carlton onballer Patrick Cripps, Hawthorn ball-winner Tom Mitchell, West Coast star Elliot Yeo and Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn.
Then with 20 are Fyfe, Collingwood big man Brodie Grundy and brilliant Brisbane midfielder Dayne Beams.

DON’T argue — Dustin Martin is right in Brownlow Medal contention.
There is no disputing that Dusty hasn’t had the season he had in 2017, but he is unquestionably in the mix to become just the seventh player to go back-to-back in the prestigious award after a late-season return to form.
Martin’s impact on Richmond this season has still been profound and if you dig deeper than just his disposal count that becomes clear.
The midfield bull is averaging just over five less touches a game but has kicked only three fewer goals than he did last year with one round remaining.
Martin’s goal assists are also only three behind last year’s tally at 18, while he remains the No. 1 score involvement player in the competition averaging 8.4 a game, down only slightly on last year’s 8.7.
The score involvement numbers are intriguing, for Martin is the only player in the top-five who is not a full-time forward.
The other four are Jack Riewoldt, Tom Hawkins, Lance Franklin and Luke Breust.
So Martin wins the ball, sets up goals and kicks six-pointers himself.
In the umpires’ eyes: Tick, tick, tick.
Martin accumulated a record 36 votes last year, polling in 14 games.
While his tally this year will not come close, it might not need to be.
Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell — the raging $1.35 favourite for the award with TAB — has seemingly gained more recognition in the football world this year than last but has he been significantly better?
That’s debatable.
Mitchell polled 25 votes last year, and has arguably had a few more teammates who have stepped up and could take votes from him this season.
Think Breust, James Sicily, Isaac Smith and Jack Gunston.
That surely gives Martin a chance.
Consider this — the Richmond superstar polled 25 votes in 2016 when he kicked just nine goals and Richmond scored only eight wins.
The Tigers should finish this season with 18 home-and-away wins, and we all know that successful teams attract more votes.
Last year players from minor premier Adelaide received 88 votes, while those from 15th-placed North Melbourne received only 40 votes.
Tom Mitchell deserves to be Brownlow Medal favourite, his year again having been super.
But we can tend to forget early-season form in the fast-moving footy news cycle.
Martin could well have received 10 or more votes in the opening five rounds after performances that included 32 disposals and a goal against Carlton, 25 disposals and five goals against Adelaide, 17 disposals and six goals against Brisbane and 26 disposals and 10 clearances against Melbourne.
His form dropped after that — a calf complaint which saw him miss one game a possible explanation — but Martin has picked up again since the bye and produced another certain three-vote game against Essendon with 26 disposals and four goals last Friday night.
Champion Data has Martin on 25.5 votes, only three behind Mitchell.
So, the message is clear: don’t discount Dusty.

IF RICHMOND superstar Dustin Martin takes home a second straight Brownlow Medal, it won't be presented to him by 2016 winner Patrick Dangerfield.
The AFL has organised for someone other than Dangerfield to drape 'Charlie' around the Tiger's neck if he goes back-to-back but won't reveal who that person is, since the scenario may not eventuate.
According to the AFL.com.au Brownlow predictor, Martin will poll 25 votes to pip Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn (24), while Carlton onballer Patrick Cripps and Collingwood big man Brodie Grundy will share third place on 23.
When St Kilda champion Robert Harvey won the Brownlow in 1997 and 1998, North Melbourne great Keith Greig was on hand to present 'Charlie' the second time round, as the most recent repeat winner.
Tigers skipper Trent Cotchin looms as an obvious candidate to take the role, since his 2012 Brownlow was won in 2016, after Essendon midfielder Jobe Watson handed his back.
That happened ahead of a Commission meeting, where Watson was to present on why he should keep his Brownlow after winning it in a year during when he was one of 34 players found guilty of taking a banned substance.
Cotchin shared the award with Sam Mitchell, who won it in his time at Hawthorn. Neither has presented a Brownlow and the current West Coast assistant coach looms as another candidate.
As the most recent back-to-back winner, Harvey could also have the honour, while Geelong champion Gary Ablett was the last person to win the Brownlow twice (2009 and 2013).

Only my opinion but I don't see how the 3 votes can go to a player in a team that only kicks 1 goal in the first half when the game decided, 4 goals in total and is flogged by 13 goals. Neale had similar stats to Fyfe (35 possies and 10 clearances) yet got no votes.

Don’t think it’s that odd MT. As has been brought up again since Friday’s performance we have let the oppositions mids rack up disposals. Most obvious case was round 19 win vs Collingwood when our best had it 22 times while collingwood had 4 players with 30 or more.

Don’t think it’s that odd MT. As has been brought up again since Friday’s performance we have let the oppositions mids rack up disposals. Most obvious case was round 19 win vs Collingwood when our best had it 22 times while collingwood had 4 players with 30 or more.
I guess TK I just don't rate accumulators who have no decisive impact on the game especially when their side loses whereas a player in the winning side may have had less disposals but was crucial to setting up the victory. Cotch got bagged for about 4 years for racking up cheap disposals yet other players at other clubs are lauded based purely on boosting their disposal stats. Sidebottom's impact in the Prelim was immense but not just because he has 41 possies (thanks to us not tagging him :facepalm). He cut us to ribbons with every one of those disposals.

Apparently meaningless handballs across the half backline if you look at this years results.
Certainly not match winning touches when the game is on the line.
