Title: Preseason 2023 - Richmond vs North Melbourne @ Arden St, Fri. Feb 24
Post by: one-eyed on January 11, 2023, 05:29:04 PM
Official pre-season matches are soon to be confirmed according to comments by Dwayne Russell on SEN, with the league to have only one weekend of matches despite being in clearer air from the pandemic.

"We're five weeks away from actual footy and the AFL will soon announce the official pre-season schedule," Russell said this week.

"The clubs are suggesting we will get one pre-season game officially broadcast against another opponent on live TV.

"It's probably going to be on the weekend of March 2, 3, 4 and 5, it's the same as last year, only one game.

"The days of an actual pre-season comp are officially dead, COVID helped reduce the pre-season and this year it's going to be a one-gamer as well.

"Clubs are allowed I'm told to make their own arrangements outside of that."

We're playing North at Arden St around Feb 23-24.

----------------------------------------------

Four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson will get his first proper look at North Melbourne when it plans to host Richmond at Arden Street.

These games are expected to be held on February 23 or 24.

The game against N0rt is a "scratch match" not an official practice match.

So it might be spread over multiple "qtrs"

The scratch matches are organised between clubs. So the clubs will determine how it will be played. For memory one of the scratch matches last year had 6 "quarters". Don't think it was one we were involved in

While we're waiting for Friday, here's a blast from the past.

Richmond vs North practice match in 1992.

Tiger highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eMOIyN2cFo

Back in the dark old days. Going by the scoreboard, at one stage we lead by 33 points (7.1 to 0.10) but ended up losing by over 100 :P.

"Nth Melb 25.30.180 def Richmond 11.12.78 at Skinner Reserve. Ashley Prescott breaks his collarbone, and Matthew Knights suffers a concussion."

Skinner Reserve got used a lot for praccy games in the 80's and 90's

Bulldogs are using it while the Whitten Oval is being upgraded

About the positive about that praccy game result was Skinner Reserve  ;D

Mansell off HB towards Jack 70 out. Jack on the turn goes inside 50. 2 North players against one but the Norf defender drops it and Samson runs into an open goal.

North with the quick reply from the centrebounce

Rich  1.1-7
Norf  3.1-19

Just a lack of intensity from us (I know it's a practice match). North look quicker once the ball is on space.

Only a practice match but that quarter was crap breeze or not.

Richmond    1.4-10
North Melb.  3.2-20

Had enough of the ball going inside 50 but mostly long kicks inside 50 didn't find targets.

Young on and in defence. Gave away a free but Norf shot misses badly ootf.

Okay both clubs have agreed to play a "final 2 mins" scenario. We now have to defend a lead as though we're less than a goal in front.

----------------

Half-time

Richmond     1.4-10     6.4-40
North Melb.  3.2-20     4.5-29

Goals: Ryan 2, Prestia, Taranto, M.Rioli, Cotchin.

No real new positional changes. Cotch and Dusty playing forward was known going into the game. Brown, Mansell, Hugo playing as half-back flankers along with Dan Rioli.

Samson hasn't got a lot of it but everything he's done has been influential on the game. A couple of good contested marks and kicked 2 goals.

Our mids seem to win more clearances at stoppage with Miller in the ruck. Has to play round 1.

Hopper and Taranto adding to the side what we expected. Freakish goal from the Tim.

Prestia probably a leading possession getter.

Weirdly, our midfield-forward connection and F50 entries was better into the breeze that 2nd qtr than with it in the 1st qtr.

Main thing today is to get through with no injuries (touchwood)  :pray.

3/4 time

Richmond       1.4     6.4       9.8-62
North Melb.    3.2     4.5       7.9-51

Goals: Ryan 2, Taranto 2, Prestia, M.Rioli, Cotchin, Riewoldt, Martin.

Edit: Goals during the "2 min" drills don't count to the score. So, Dusty's 2nd goal is not included.

What's the 2 min thing MT?
With 2 mins to go at the end of each quarter the actual score is ignored and one team has to pretend they are in front by less than a kick and need to defend it. So it's a little game within the actual game. Any goals during the "2 min" thing don't count to the total score. I hope that makes sense.

This is hilarious, almost like a PE lesson lol

By the sounds of it you could not get much more of a mickey mouse game if you tried.

Any body  look at Bradtke how did he look. Also Ryan any chance he can play third tall ruck in the seniors has he bulked up any.

Last one any one think NM  will improve this year. I think they have  a lot of hard running types with lots of hb, wing and outside options and could be a good running team obviously they lack in other areas.

Sheez the man: Roos' recruit stars, new Tigers impress

Harry Sheezel starred for North Melbourne in its match simulation against Richmond, while new Tigers Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper looked dangerous.

By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
24 February 2023

HE WAS a top three pick for a reason, and Harry Sheezel's first hitout against AFL opposition was full of confidence from the opening bounce.

The Roos fell just short of a Richmond side that rotated through its stars, the Tigers saluting 11.9 (75) to 10.13 (73) in blustery conditions at Arden Street.

North Melbourne was composed and well-disciplined in its first competitive run under new coach Alastair Clarkson, spreading the Richmond defence and creating space in attack.

Sheezel was simply outstanding early, playing across half-forward and pushing into the middle at times, booting two goals in the first quarter.

He faded somewhat as the game progressed, but bobbed up in the fourth term for a clever third goal.

Richmond recruits Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper fitted in beautifully, spending a lot of time at centre bounces and impressing with their neat disposal. Taranto in particular looked dangerous floating into attack, kicking two goals.

North Melbourne went with a very tall forward line, with Nick Larkey, Callum Coleman-Jones, Charlie Comben and Eddie Ford all featuring; Comben in particular having some promising moments up against established Richmond defenders like Dylan Grimes, Robbie Tarrant (playing a half each) and Noah Balta.

Will Phillips showed some nice signs running through the middle, while Luke Davies-Uniacke picked up where he left off with a very professional performance.

Griffin Logue got through three pre-determined quarters in his first North Melbourne outing, the former Docker wearing a glove to protect his dislocated finger.

The Tigers began to roll through the changes after three of the six terms (the latter two featuring mostly VFL players), with Noah Cumberland, Biggie Nyuon, Thomson Dow, Ivan Soldo and Seth Campbell taking to the field, while Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin rested.

Both clubs agreed to running a drill in the final two minutes of the second and third quarters, returning to the middle of the field for a centre bounce. Richmond – as the team in front at the time – set up as if defending a lead of less than a goal, while North Melbourne attempted to hit the front. The Tigers sent Cotchin into the middle for the "final minutes".

The Tigers were without Tom Lynch (foot), Shai Bolton (personal reasons), Marlion Pickett (general sorenss), Liam Baker (appendix), Nathan Broad (hamstring) and Jack Graham (toe).

The Roos missed Jy Simpkin, Ben Cunnington and Todd Goldstein (rested), Darcy Tucker (knee) and Tarryn Thomas (leave).

YOUNG GUNS

All eyes were on Sheezel from the get-go, showing composure and neat skills while at full pace. Tom Brown is yet to debut after a year on the list, but the young Richmond defender looked very comfortable at the top level and had some nice moments. Samson Ryan played Tom Lynch's role and looked lively. Paul Curtis was dangerous inside forward 50, setting up a number of Kangaroos goals.

SWITCHING POSITIONS

Keep your eye out for greater midfield time for Cam Zurhaar, the bullocking North Melbourne forward spending considerable time at centre bounces to good effect. The two former skippers in Trent Cotchin and Jack Ziebell went head-to-head, Cotchin kicking a neat front-and-centre goal in the second term in his new predominantly forward role. Rhyan Mansell also spent time across half-forward, having mainly played defence in his short career, while Ben Miller switched between forward and defence within the game.

INJURY WATCH

Nick Larkey sent a minor scare through North Melbourne fans, limping off in the first quarter after a marking contest, but returned before the first break. Other than that, it was a clean bill of health for both sides.

FANTASY TEMPTERS

Will Phillips (MID, $270,000) should see plenty of AFL time this year, and while still a little undersized, didn't look out of place coming up against Taranto, Hopper and Dion Prestia. Cam Zurhaar's (FWD, $522,000) stint in the midfield was dynamic, and could be a bit of a positional cheat given he's listed as a forward. Regardless of the cost, Tim Taranto (MID/FWD) $846,000 is nearly a must-have, after an injury-interrupted 2022.

Richmond’s sharp new dynamic duo, Sheezel stars for North

Ronny Lerner
The Age

Richmond prizes worth the price

The hefty price that Richmond paid during last year’s trade period to snare former Greater Western Sydney duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper already looks worth it.

Hellbent on remaining in the premiership window, and adding a fourth flag to their golden generation’s resume, the Tigers gave up picks 12 and 19 for Taranto, as well as a 2023 first-round pick and pick 31 for Hopper.

Granted, Richmond might’ve been playing the reigning back-to-back wooden spooners North Melbourne in a six-period practice match in February, but the early signs that the Richmond faithful saw from Taranto and Hopper would’ve got them very excited indeed.

Particularly Taranto.

The 2019 GWS best-and-fairest was the standout on Friday morning at Arden Street and had a huge impact in the midfield. He gathered possessions at will as he wasted little time in putting his class and exquisite skills on show.

Taranto also went forward, kicking a pair of goals, including a sensational banana from the boundary in the second term, and could’ve finished the game with four majors considering he hit the post twice.

Hopper also impressed, with his composure and clean delivery to the forward line conspicuous.

As part of the Tigers’ new-look midfield, the former Giants combined beautifully with an established bull in Dion Prestia who picked up where he left off last year by having a huge influence as he too gathered a stack of disposals.

The 2019 All-Australian was a constant threat and his work around the contest was excellent, but he also covered a lot of ground, popping up for a beautiful goal from the boundary line in the second stanza.

The additions of Taranto and Hopper to the engine room have given Richmond the luxury of moving former captain Trent Cotchin to the forward line, where he looked dangerous, setting up goals and snaring one himself after he beautifully crumbed the pack in the goal square in the second period.

Sheezel brings the excitement for North

Kangaroos fans had plenty to be excited about as well – namely highly touted top pick Harry Sheezel.

The No.3 overall selection at last year’s draft was outstanding up forward, finishing with three goals, and already looks a certain starter for round one after displaying the same class, poise and x-factor that he exhibited at underage level in 2022.

Sheezel was one of North’s best players in the opening term and started the match with a bang, tackling Taranto in the opening minute and pinging him for holding the ball, before nonchalantly converting the free kick from 35m out directly in front.

He added another clip to his highlight reel 15 minutes later when he cleverly tapped the loose ball from congestion to Jaidyn Stephenson who handballed it back to Sheezel before he snapped truly with a magnificent attempt under pressure from a sharp angle in the pocket.

His third major came in the third period when he crumbed the pack in the goal square and sent a hurried banana through the big sticks, capping off an industrious opening foray against senior AFL opposition.

Other Kangaroos who impressed were Luke Davies-Uniacke, who was their best on-baller as usual, and Cam Zurhaar in an unfamiliar role in the middle.

Zurhaar attended numerous centre bounces, and although he got caught holding the ball a few times, he made his presence felt and added grunt in the clinches.

The maligned Stephenson also looked dangerous at times, creating and setting up play as a midfielder/high half-forward, and applying some good forward pressure, and young key forward Charlie Comben provided a solid target for the Kangaroos, finishing with 2.2. New coach Alastair Clarkson will hope Comben can effectively combine with Nick Larkey in attack this year.

From purple to blue and white

Clarkson would’ve also been pleased with another new recruit, former Docker Griffin Logue, who had a good battle with star Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt.

In their first official hitout under Clarkson, North’s ability to run in numbers, especially from defence, was noticeable and they seemed to have a stronger defensive structure compared to previous years. They also weren’t shy in taking the game on through the corridor, with quick handballs leading to some impressive run-and-carry play.

For the Tigers, triple Norm Smith medallist Dustin Martin was busy, and showed glimpses of his vintage best with a couple of beautiful goals, co-captain Toby Nankervis was great in the ruck, Nick Vlastuin was rock solid in defence and rookie selection Seth Campbell looked spritely up forward, kicking a couple of goals from limited game time.

And without Tom Lynch, young tall Samson Ryan provided a presence up forward for the Tigers, kicking two goals and could’ve finished with four, but two of his set shots failed to score.

CLARKO’S NORTH SHOWS PLENTY AS NEW-LOOK TIGERS MIDFIELD STRUTS ITS STUFF

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
24 February 2023

It was a highly competitive meeting between North Melbourne and Richmond at Arden Street on Friday morning.

The contest was hectic early with the attack on the ball fierce from both sides, mainly the Kangaroos, and a swirly wind wreaking havoc with foot skills.

It did settle by the second term with the Tigers eventually running out two-point winners - 11.9.(75) to 10.13.(73) - having trailed by 10 points at quarter time.

Alastair Clarkson’s North side showed they will be much harder to score against this year. Their pressure around the contest was noticeable and their structure and game style, particularly when slingshotting off half-back, was much improved.

New-look Tigers midfield

Richmond’s big gun recruits Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto spent massive amounts of time in the middle with Dion Prestia, locking horns with North’s preferred brigade of Luke Davies-Uniacke, Cam Zurhaar, Will Phillips and Tom Powell.

Taranto was dangerous in attack, kicking a lovely banana from the pocket in the second term before a second goal with a composed finish in the third. He also kicked two behinds, getting forward regularly from stoppages.

He and Hopper got plenty of the ball in positive signs for Damirn Hardwick's side.

Martin and Cotchin almost exclusively forward

Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin spent almost all of their time as forwards.

Martin roamed across half-forward and was involved in plenty of link play. He also impacted the scoreboard with two quality third-quarter goals, one a bouncing snap from just inside 50.

Cotchin provided pressure and grunt and kicked a clever crumbing goal.

Young Tigers show a bit

Samson Ryan showed a bit up forward, filling the Tom Lynch void. He kicked two goals and was a constant target, taking a couple of nice contested marks.

Tom Brown was impressive off half-back providing plenty of run with a side of poise and toughness.

Rookie draft selection Tylar Young played deep in defence and fellow rookie Seth Campbell kicked a goal and had a tidy goal assist in the fourth quarter after coming on late.

Regulars who didn’t play

North Melbourne: Jy Simpkin, Ben Cunnington, Todd Goldstein.

Richmond: Tom Lynch, Shai Bolton, Jack Graham, Nathan Broad, Liam Baker, Tyler Sonsie, Marlion Pickett.

By the sounds of it you could not get much more of a mickey mouse game if you tried.

Any body  look at Bradtke how did he look. Also Ryan any chance he can play third tall ruck in the seniors has he bulked up any.
As AT said, Bradtke didn't do much in the couple of quarters he played.

Samson played mainly a tall forward with Lynch not playing. He took a couple of impressive contested marks as well as kicking two goals so it was a decent return but Nank and Miller did most of the ruck work.

Of the other cubs:

Brown got better as the game went along at half-back. Got pushed off the ball a couple of times in the first quarter but fixed that up after quarter time and had a solid game.

Mansell got a fair bit of the ball but he gave away a fair few free kicks being overzealous with his tackling.

Maurice did a couple of magical things but aside from the goal and an assist or two he didn't have a huge impact at least with the ball.

Hugo was ok. He played across half-back but I don't see that as his position in the team.

Dow played in the VFL side in the last two quarters as a centrebounce mid. He was good but he wasn't tried in the main team during the first four quarters.

Cumberland was another in our VFL line-up. He had been in rehab just prior to the match-sims and intra-clubs, so I'm guessing they are easing him back into full match play.

Banks was okay. Another across HB. Didn't notice him that much.

Clarke started in the main team and was quiet in the first half but came alive in the 3rd quarter. He's exciting when he's impacting on the game.

Campbell I mentioned in the other thread. The best of the newbies by far. If he can show what he showed today on a regular basis then he'll make his senior debut sooner rather than later.

Young - disappointing today based on what he had showed at match sim training during the preseason. Maybe my expectations  were higher because of it and expected more from him today.

Biggie - typical Biggie. He was ok. Played mostly in the VFL side.

Green - too early to judge. Another who played in the VFL line-up. Need to see more gametime.

From aflcentral instagram

Seriously good notes from my man @grinners35 on North v Richmond:

- Richmond probably better by three-and-a-half goals. Tigers put the cue in the rack at 3qt and pulled out most of their best.
- Harry Sheezel oozes class. 3 goals and had Vlastuin on him for reasonable parts of the match. Looks a clean and classy player. Makes each possession sing, he looks a blue chip prospect.
- Dion Prestia has been unleashed by Hopper and Taranto. All the chat has been about the new boys, but Dion looks in astounding touch. Quality touches and ball magnet.
- Tim Taranto though, just wow. No stats but would have had 22 and 3 goals to 3QT. An absolute Rolls Royce.
- LDU’s physicality stands out significantly. Very hard to tackle, looks more in control of his body than ever before. No issue finding the footy and he’s started to find some mates in the middle to help.
- Dustin Martin as a fit permanent forward was scary. Looked back to 2020 form. Untackleable and just stupid good ball use.
- Charlie Comben will play R1. Outplayed Coleman-Jones and gave the Tigers some headaches in the air.
- Josh Goater’s pace and creativity off half-back looks more than handy, did get his ribs thumped (twice!)by big Nank though. Expect a lot of good things from JG this year.
- Judson Clarke will be a mainstay. Covered serious KMs, and as the game went on, used the ball very precisely. Looks to have trained in the Kane Lambert role. Can get from one end of the ground to the other in no time. Tigers squad is deep but he might get a R1 spot.
- Noah Balta really impressed me, looks noticeably stronger than last season as a full-back, spoils travelling 20m. Gets less of the footy but seems to be a lockdown back rather than a user.
- Zurhaar midfield minutes 👀 looks to have translated his ground-ball forward half game to the guts. Can see him doing short, sharp stints to bullock through and make space for the ball-winners.
- Samson Ryan played a really solid game as key forward but set shot kicking is a worry.
- Seth Campbell when he came on was a bright spot for the Tigers.

Paddy’s votes:
5 - Taranto
4 - Prestia
3 - LDU
2 - Clarke
1 - Sheezel

I've only watched the first 3 periods of the 6 played

But I have to say that I was impressed with Jack Ross. As most know I'm not a fan but liked what I've seen so far. Sure by foot and good game awareness

Good signs

Playing inside or outside?

Guessing outside given we had TT + Hop + Prestia inside.

I reckon Dimma will be happy with that, the injection of Taranto & Hopper isn’t just about them it’s also the effect on Dusty, Bolton, Short etc. Balancing their time back into either half & in more 1:1 is a good thing for us. Our youngsters esp Brown + Ryan were good. #GoTiges

Finally got around to watching the game. P1-4 wasn’t very impressive if we’re being honest but a solid hit out and coming out seemingly unscathed injury wise is probably all that matters. P5-6 were by far our best, vfl side looked good, hopefully they can have a strong season with more depth moving some of the more regular AFL players down.

Bests for me were TT (BOG - looked like an absolute jet), Dusty (looked fit and strong, will cause a muck in the fwd line this year), Prestia (just keeps doing Prestia things) and Juddy Clarke (think he’s catapulted himself into round 1 contention).

My biggest ‘concern’ is that our defending (both structurally as a whole team and in 1v1s in our back 6) didn’t look much better than last season. Gave up way too many shots at goal and just bang avg defending at times, letting the ball bounce, standing off their man, not killing the ball in the contest, etc. Still a long way to go in this regard as imo it has become the weakest part of our game.

AFL practice matches: Your club’s centre bounce attendees, midfield structure

Jakson Bertoli
innersanctum.com.au
25/02/2023

Richmond, 11.9 (75) def North Melbourne, 10.13 (73)

Match Structure – 4 x 25-minute quarters, no time on.

Don’t let the scores deceive you, the Tigers were far and away the better side. Richmond went through the paces for three quarters while keeping the Kangaroos at arm’s length, before taking off most of their stars for the last quarter.

That isn’t to say North wasn’t good, Alistair Clarkson’s men looked much better than previous years. Luke Davies-Uniacke picked up where he left off last year, and looked to be in better control of his size than ever before. Harry Sheezel was clean with the ball for his three goals in an impressive performance.

Will Phillips and Tom Powell both looked ready to take the next step with mature stints in the midfield, while Cam Zurhaar attended a large chunk of centre bounces.

Tigers recruit Tim Taranto couldn’t have started life at punt road much better, the former Giant kicked three goals while dominating the midfield. Hopper also turned heads after the move from GWS, Dion Prestia played three periods and was outstanding.

Percentage of Centre Bounces attended, by team:

Richmond:

70.4% – Tim Taranto

70.4% – Jacob Hopper

70.4% – Jayden Short

55.6% – Dion Prestia (only played three quarters)

22.2% – Thomson Dow (played one quarter)

A small and settled midfield mix, absences that may impact numbers are Liam Baker, Shai Bolton and Jack Graham. Taranto, Hopper and Prestia the main setup early in the game, very intentional performance. Likely a full dress rehearsal.

Who was it that intercepted the ball at half back, took them on and nailed Dusty on the chest so he didn’t have to break stride? Awesome vision and execution.

I think we should train clarke for the wing role. As much as kmac and Pickett play the role asked of them and give it their all, I’ve always thought the wing is one of the positions where we could improve on. Juddy clarke with his elite kicking on both sides and strong gut running (I think) seems ideal. Maybe just needs to learn the running patterns and defensive side.

Yep, Kmac and Pickett run both ways all day. They are also more mature bodies and more physical. That's why they are our wingers. Clarke is still young and light-framed and as you say TK needs to learn the running patterns and work on the defensive side of the game. Loads of talent and weapons at his disposal though to use once he matures and reaches his prime. May even be able to throw onball for short bursts eventually.

People talk of the Lambert role well i think Clarke is ideally suited to it if there is such a role. Personally i thought Lambert primarily a forward of centre mid some people called him him a fwd mid i dont really see it that way.
Anyway either way i think Clarke a natural fwd with Lambert attributes. Id be tempted to pick him first game.  If MRJ or Cumberland don't perform he is logically the one to take their place. He is probably good enough to warrant a game but  he is going to struggle  because we choose to play so many like Bolton, Martin Taranto and now Cotchin in  fwd half roles.

Couldn’t find his thread so I’ll just post it here. I thought young Tom Brown showed a bit on Friday too. Looks like a vlastuin regen. Another season of vfl and he’ll be ready to go I rekn. In saying that I’d give him a crack if any of vlastuin, broad, grimes went down or were suspended.

One of our VFL-listed players, AT.

Bradtke on the run from 45 just misses.

95 - 79

Is he confirmed ?
I cant find anything that tells me he has signed for our VFL side & I keep a pretty good record
Lachlan Johnson is listed on the RFC's VFL squad page.

Yes, I was referring to your answer to At where he asked about Archie May

I thought Tom Brown looked excellent on the weekend, interesting to see if he gets a run against the Dees.  Clarke also looked good.
We looked quite fumbly early which is to be expected.

What we learned about every AFL club in match simulation analysis

Ben Cotton, Max Laughton, Ben Waterworth and David Zita
Fox Sports
February 27th, 2023

RICHMOND

This is still a flawed side, as we saw last year when despite all of their underlying numbers looking so impressive, the Tigers lost to North Melbourne and then failed to even win one final.

But their match simulation win at Arden Street also showed the potential new strengths of this Richmond group - and for once, it’s in the midfield.

Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper were targeted additions to bolster a group that has often relied too much on Trent Cotchin, or the injury-prone Dion Prestia, and Taranto in particular showed great signs in his first televised hitout in yellow and black.

“I think Taranto has been a really great addition to this outfit and the class and different looks that he’s providing has been really exciting for the Tigers,” Fox Footy commentator Ellie Blackburn said.

“We’ve said it numerous times and we’ll probably keep saying it throughout the rest of this game but he has been outstanding and what he’s been able to provide is great excitement for the Tigers around the midfield.”

The flow-on effect of having that additional midfield muscle is allowing Dustin Martin to play even more forward time, where he often looks unstoppable - which was the case again in the third period against North.

It’s hard not to dream of what this Tigers group can be at its best. And, if the midfield really is up to scratch, that’ll help protect the sometimes-flawed defence too.
