If they pick a kid at 12 with 49% kicking efficiency and a stuffed foot then theres nothing more to say other than good luck because we will never be any good as a football club. Its just amateur hour at Richmond if they start drafting guys with those stats over the last 12 months. LOL.

Some of you posters on here are pathetic and just keyboard warriors.  Kid hasn't even played a game. Let him develop and work hard and see what comes of it, its incredible how irritated some people get with the club and recruitment staff on decisions only they have the expertise, stats and facts to make. We seen today with the tragic death of a young cricketer in Phil Hughes not being able to show more of what he has to the rest of us the world how tragic it can be. Just let the kids play first bloody hell!

These kids love footy and only want a chance and are getting knocked already by posters before even starting. My example was purely to see how life can be cut short from something you love and should encourage kids to make the most of it. If all you got from my post was that, your clearly are the disgrace champ.

I hope for all our sakes he becomes a star but just taking another look at his highlights package again it's all pretty standard stuff. Seems a pretty good kick with nice hands but IMO we could have got that and plenty more with others.
Another really SAFE pick IMO.

Welcome to OER!
Now, its best they get used to it early, it is character building.  It is no good having mad skills like Bruce Lee if you weigh as much as a house cat for example or float around the ground if you then kick like you got saturday night palsy.  Don't worry we will get em on the Relton diet and Richo is gonna do some kicking practice with them.

2014 Draft, pick 12: Corey Ellis
richmondfc.com.au
November 27, 2014 7:35 PM

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-11-27/danny-yeung-1

Richmond has selected Western Jets midfielder Corey Ellis with its first pick (selection 12) in the 2014 National Draft.

The 184cm, 76cm 18-year-old represented Vic Metro at the 2014 National Championships, where he averaged 14 disposals and four tackles per game.

His standout performance was a 21-disposal, seven-mark game against Western Australia.

While playing for the Jets in the TAC Cup this season, he averaged 22 disposals, 3.5 tackles and five clearances per game.

Ellis suffered a foot injury late in the 2014 season, causing him to miss the AFL Combine, however Richmond’s recruiters saw enough to like about the smooth-moving left footer.

“Corey is a classy midfielder, who is one of the best kicks and decision makers in the draft,” said Richmond Recruiting Manager Francis Jackson.

“He is a tough competitor with good endurance, and is rarely rushed with his disposal, even when in traffic.

“He is outstanding at creating offence and scoring opportunities for his team.

“Corey is still a little light, but has all the attributes to develop into a quality inside midfielder at AFL level.”

Of course I hope he wins 17 brownlows.

Conca, too

Then bag the club, Frank, Blair whoever you want not kid.

You've belittled the kid by calling him "Mr 49%".

He deserves better than that - a lot better

he should have hit a target , more then once out of everythree kicks then

I think the Judge was using the title not to bag the kid, but to point out the recruiters are once again not following their own public statements re foot skills.

Would have preferred leverde and lever before him imho but should be in our round 1 side improving us immediately. Does have a great awareness inside, will be a good tandem with Miles and give Cotch a much needed chop out. Good luck Corey

Pretty much where I sit, TM. Specialist inside mid and extractor, I'm ok with this as a targeted selection for need if it improves our outside game and frees up our bluechip players.

Well done to Corey Ellis getting drafted as our first round pick. He looks a good solid kick and once he gets used to the pace of the game he should be able to hone that skill even further.

I agree with the comments that some of the posts on this thread have been appalling namely one Mr Bentleigh Biscuit and another Mr Rampaging Tiger. Pull your heads in. The decision has been made, this guy is playing for Richmond, he needs to be good, and he damn well will be!

have you even seen this kid play judge.
me i have about 6 i would have taken in front of corey but i will not bag him not until we see what we have at the level.  we all have kids we like better than others. it doesnt mean we are right. only way to judge ellis is on HIS PERFORMANCES FROM HERE ON IN. ATM francis jacksons picks are all spot on until PROVEN otherwise.

does anyone else here like the upside connor menadue represents. again i had about 3 i would have taken in front of connor but ffs this is a good pick.

while ellis is not my cup of tea and atm im  alittle disappointed we didnt take others i think for once francis has done okay with his other picks.
time will tell and in fairness we need to give these picks a chance to work out.

Well after today Ill be disappearing all together of this site because I wont be a member next year nor will I be contributing any more money to the club. That being the case I don't feel its right for me to comment about the club going forward. I personally don't have a  beef with the kid, my beef is with the club and what they did tonight as well as a long term beef with the club about the direction of the club. So with that being said I want to thank you all for all the years of entertainment on here, but Richmond FC no longer provides enjoyment for me and I don't support the administration of the club or how the club is moving forward. Beyond that I wish all of you and all the players the best and goodluck to you all.

Add that to the fact our recruiters rated him as the best kick in the draft and..pfft...he should just pack up and head to the scrap yard.

REPORT CARD: HOW DID YOUR CLUB FARE?

Ellis suffered a stress fracture in his foot this season but will be fit for the pre-season.

AFL Draft 2014: Corey Ellis, Richmond’s top pick, may require foot surgery

    Michael Warner
    Herald Sun
    November 28, 2014 6:00PM

RICHMOND concedes its top draft pick, Western Jets midfielder Corey Ellis, could require minor surgery on his injured right foot.

Ellis, taken at pick 12 by the Tigers in Thursday night’s draft, suffered a stress fracture at the end of the TAC Cup season and missed the AFL draft combine.

Rival clubs on Friday agreed Ellis, 18, was among the best kicks in this year’s draft pool but said they baulked at recruiting him because of the injury.

Collingwood’s top draft pick from last year, Matt Scharenberg, had more serious bone-stress reactions in both feet and required surgery last February that ended his season.

But the Tigers say Ellis is back running and set to join pre-season training at Punt Rd.

They said minor surgery was an option if the foot flared again but it would not sideline him for an extended period.

“We were well aware he had a metatarsal issue that kept him out of the AFL Combine,” Richmond football boss Dan Richardson said.

“We will obviously monitor him but, as it stands, he is back running and looking forward to the pre-season.

“If any corrective procedure was ever required it wouldn’t have any long-term implications at all.

“We are thrilled to have a player of his quality at our club.”

The Tigers say Ellis, pick 33 Connor Menadue and pick 52 Nathan Drummond will help add depth to a midfield that can challenge the AFL’s best.

Was actually about to jump on board this kid but at no fault of his own I just can't now. Wouldn't give up pick 12 for Trengrove and a pick downgrade because of a stress fracture but use our pick on him get bent!

Beggars belief really - FJ probably thinking he'll be the master recruiter who took the punt on this year's Troy Menzel...who the stuff knows.

Happy to trade #12 for #20 and trengrove....

Cause they knew Ellis would still be there at the melbourn pick

just waiting...
there's no problem with it at the moment as they said, he is running on it now.

plus...this is nothing like trengove, this is his metatarsal rather than the dreaded navicular, so a different prospect altogether

It will flair up again, foot injuries are like that. Drafted another amputee

Still would have gone Lavede but what would I know. Just think we need more outside run and leg speed. The part that hurts the most is he has gone to Essendon, which I f:;king hate more than..... Frances Jackson.  :shh

Makes me wonder though if we are a massive chance to pick up Shiel next year did we need another 'one paced' inside mid?

A friend of mine at work is mates with one of the recruiters at Hawthorn. He asked about Ellis and the Hawthorn guy thought it was a good pick. They also rated Ellis better than Duggan, Ahern and Weller. Some of the crap about Ellis in this thread is so stupid.
Pretty well in line with my mail too, he s an excellent pick up, just quietly he could navigate his way through a Shanghai traffic jam such is his composure in the clutches ....don't underestime this kid ,  :shh

not sold on shiel and have a few issues with him. kid will probably show me up.

on ellis geez im in no mans land with him.
i had a few that werent taken in front of him laverde weller  but for me i would have taken a tall at 12. i really like sam durdin as a prospect.time will tell i suppose.for me it was a toss of the coin between a mid laverde and durdin a kpp in the end if durdin wasnt there i probably would have still gone tall with lever.

From what I have seen of him he isn't overly quick, or doesn't use his pace if he is, and his kicking isn't elite like an A grade outside midfielders needs to be.

Don't get me wrong I'd have him in a heartbeat but think he is better suited as an inside mid doing some in and under work. That's why I would have preferred Leverde.

It's all mute at this stage but if we do get him as I said, I think an outside mid would have been a better pick this draft.

As I said, if he does have genuine speed I don't think he uses it much to break the lines. Just like Lids IMO, doesn't take the game on enough with his speed. Lids plays really safe footy. Does everything really well but with all his attributes could be one of the best mids in the game but isn't unfortunately.
I guess a lot of how you 'take the game on' comes from your personality. I saw a game on Foxtel a while back and Lids was in his first or second season and he played a lot more attacking footy.
Just my opinion, what do others think?

Tone I watched Dylan play all his home games live last season and he is quick especially over the first 20 metres. His endurance is elite, Kicking is actually pretty good and is very dangerous around goal. He is tough and has no problems playing the role of an inside mid when required. In a nutshell, he is missed by GWS when he isn't on the ground.

By the sounds of it you would be the one to know about Shiel. I hope he joins the Tigers at the end of the year, I do like the look of him. But my main point was why did we draft an inside mid with our first pick if we potentially are getting Dylan at seasons end? Especially with Miles excelling in that roll this year. It makes me think we would like him but we are still miles away.
I hope with all the talk from the club we get someone decent at the end of the year. We deserve it and we need it!! Otherwise it's just another lie from the club.
Good luck to Ellis though, if we get Dylan it will just be a bonus. And you can never have to many blokes that are hard at it.  :thumbsup

I agree Tone, on first inspection do we have a real immediate need for Ellis? Was he selected on that fact that the club thought he was the best available at our pick? Would we have selected Duggan had he not gone? IMO I thought Weller or Lever would have been better choices but I guess the club may be going for added midfield depth.

Richmond’s first pick in the 2014 National Draft, Corey Ellis, will have minor surgery on his foot this week.

The procedure is not expected to keep the talented 18-year-old midfielder on the sidelines for long, with the Tigers expecting him to return to training early in the new year.

i sort of disagree a bit here tone.
i think the need was enormous for another big bodied inside mid. unfortunately for us the need for a super quick highly skilled hard running outside mid was just as great.
we took a big bodied inside mid with our first pick, like you if i was going mids it would have been laverde and blakeley.  both were available at 12 and 33..
why i think the need for a inside mid. look no further than the list. it wasnt until miles came in that we could compete on the inside consitently, lose one of miles or cotch and theres just no one else at a similar inside level. we needed some quality depth in the area  and hopefully we have got it.

in the end i opted for a tall with pick 12 as i think either durdin or lever would have been worthy at our pick. i  like goddard a lot as well.. i also unlike most others think we desperately need quality talls as well as mids.
anyway like you i really liked laverde months  before the draft,in the end as far as mids go it was down to de goey and laverde and i really didnt think either would get to us. de goey would have been great imo.

for me i would have been over the moon if we had somehow managed to take garlett. carlton gave him away. , snare frawley as a f/a  and traded for hallahan who cost very little  prior to the draft. i was very disappointed we didnt have a crack at any of em. then to follow up with at 12 and 33  laverde and blakeley it would have addressed a few issues.

we address sml fwd problem garlett,
we address kpd quality and depth. frawley. no need to take durdin, lever, or even goddard.
we add three mids all ready to go and address inside and outside needs. laverde, hallahan, blakeley.leaving 3 other nd picks to address needs. glad we took mckenzie as the area is another big need. i would have been keen to take kietel or oscar mcdonald as well.

as for ellis im still stumped and unsure.he  could prove very astute but for me he was nowhere near best available at this pick and i think we could have addressed the inside need later with blakeley anyway.

I heard from a reliable sauce, that this procedure, whilst perfectly straight forward,
could kill him because he's allergic to anesthetic.

My question is, would we perhaps get a consolation pick that we could

A mate of mine was part of the coaching staff this year that coached Corey and he thinks he is a star. That's good enough for me knowing my mate and him not saying that to many before.
I really hope for the club and for all us Tiger supporters that he is right.

Anyway what's done is done.  :gotigers
Tone, not sure if you are inferring that shiel is one paced, in actual fact he is very quick and is versatile enough to play as either an inside or outside mid

Just my opinion.
i sort of disagree a bit here tone.
i think the need was enormous for another big bodied inside mid. unfortunately for us the need for a super quick highly skilled hard running outside mid was just as great.
we took a big bodied inside mid with our first pick, like you if i was going mids it would have been laverde and blakeley.  both were available at 12 and 33..
why i think the need for a inside mid. look no further than the list. it wasnt until miles came in that we could compete on the inside consitently, lose one of miles or cotch and theres just no one else at a similar inside level. we needed some quality depth in the area  and hopefully we have got it.

in the end i opted for a tall with pick 12 as i think either durdin or lever would have been worthy at our pick. i  like goddard a lot as well.. i also unlike most others think we desperately need quality talls as well as mids.
anyway like you i really liked laverde months  before the draft,in the end as far as mids go it was down to de goey and laverde and i really didnt think either would get to us. de goey would have been great imo.

for me i would have been over the moon if we had somehow managed to take garlett. carlton gave him away. , snare frawley as a f/a  and traded for hallahan who cost very little  prior to the draft. i was very disappointed we didnt have a crack at any of em. then to follow up with at 12 and 33  laverde and blakeley it would have addressed a few issues.

we address sml fwd problem garlett,
we address kpd quality and depth. frawley. no need to take durdin, lever, or even goddard.
we add three mids all ready to go and address inside and outside needs. laverde, hallahan, blakeley.leaving 3 other nd picks to address needs. glad we took mckenzie as the area is another big need. i would have been keen to take kietel or oscar mcdonald as well.

as for ellis im still stumped and unsure.he  could prove very astute but for me he was nowhere near best available at this pick and i think we could have addressed the inside need later with blakeley anyway.
Claw to totally understand you want more of player A because our depth isn't great in a certain position but before you even think about depth or injuries, you have to have the best 22 you can.
My point was, if we are any chance of getting Shiel next year from GWS we IMO should have taken an A grade outside runner with our first pick. Like you said, we have Miles and Cotch that play that roll really well ATM, and waiting another year to get Shiel to help out in that roll wouldn't have been the end if the world.
Do we have a genuine outside runner that gets 30 week in week out? Like say a Swan or Pendleburry. Win lose or draw those blokes just get the footy. Put anyone with a pulse on Lids and he goes to water. Cotch is a star and does both inside and outside work, but there is no one really else that hurts teams with their numbers. Ellis and Grigg both get decent numbers but both are useless when it comes to hurting teams with those touches.

COREY Ellis is expected to resume training in January, despite Richmond's first pick at last month's NAB AFL Draft needing foot surgery this week.

The No.12 pick missed the end of the TAC Cup season with a stress fracture in his foot, which also saw him sit out testing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

He was out of his protective moonboot in the lead-up to the draft and began jogging gradually, but was under advice from his surgeon that if any soreness persisted he may require an operation.

The club said the 18-year-old was not expected to be sidelined for long after Friday's procedure.

"In consultation with our medical team, we have decided that the best course of action is for Corey to have minor surgery on his foot," Richmond's football manager, Dan Richardson, told the club's website.

"We were fully aware of Corey's condition when we drafted him, and that a procedure might be required at some stage. While he will not be rushed back into full training, we expect a full recovery early in 2015."

The Tigers targeted Ellis for his class, decision-making and poise in the midfield after a consistent season with the Western Jets and Vic Metro at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Ellis settles in ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-12-16/ellis-settles-in

* To be picked up [in the AFL draft] has been a dream my whole life and for it to happen and for it to be a good result like Richmond, I’m really pleased.

* Definitely like to follow Cotch around and Deledio – both midfielders – and learn some things off them which will help my game.

* 2015 goals - I want to play a few senior games at least next year.  But for that to happen, I’ve got to be training well and learning the structures and everything.

Swan had a pretty quite year due to injury. His previous 5 seasons are a better indication. How do those number stack up? Not only that, Lids goes missing in most big games.  Swan and Pendleburry are proven big game players.
IMO lids isn't a genuine mid, plays better across half back or half forward. Don't get me wrong, Lids has been good for the RFC but he is not in that elite midfield bracket.

i think a lot of supporters feel lids has never reached the heights he could, but he is a very good player. a classy player.

career wise he is only 3 or so possessions per game behind swan. both are down on penelbury though.

i think his inability to shake a tag and big game performance is overplayed. he had 29 touches in the port adelaide final debacle, for example.

Corey's dad is great. Fits in at Tigerland already with him saying "As long as Corey doesn't get drafted by Collingwood"  :lol.

Richmond recruit Corey Ellis set to return to running after foot surgery

  Daniel Cherny
     The Age
    January 12, 2015 - 4:24PM

"You just want to get out there and train and show them what you can do."

The frustration in Richmond's Corey Ellis' voice is evident.

Ellis has not been able to show teammates and coaches why the Tigers took the midfielder with pick 12 in November's draft. His pre-existing right foot issues, which resulted in him missing the draft combine, flared up again in mid-December, forcing him to have minor surgery.

"I was on a program just to ease my way back into things, and then it flared up again, so I went straight into surgery," Ellis said on Monday at the AFL Players' Association induction camp at Etihad Stadium.

The wait is just about over though. Ellis said he should be back running this week, and hoped to return to full training in about a fortnight.

He praised the club for its support.

"They've been great. They kind of had a feeling that it would occur again so they've supported me through."

Ellis highlighted how Matt Thomas, who has also been in the rehab group, has assisted him through a challenging period.

"Being in rehab with him, he's always there and pushing me through."

The foot issue did not prevent Ellis from taking part in Richmond's gruelling training camp in Townsville almost immediately after his arrival at Punt Road.

"Talking to a few of the boys that was the hardest pre-season camp they'd done … it was the toughest week of my life."

One particular day stood out. Ellis couldn't take part in a hike because of his foot and was therefore "chucked on a mountain bike", and forced to ride up and down the mountain 2˝ times while the others strode the incline.

"I couldn't walk afterwards."

Even with his return to running imminent, Ellis isn't looking too far ahead.

"I just want to get my body right for the season now, get back into training and get a bit of fitness under my belt. If I'm training well enough I'll earn some game time, if not it'll happen in the next few years."

Ellis was reunited on Monday with his former Keilor teammates – Essendon's Jayden Laverde, GWS Giant Paul Ahern and West Coast's Damien Cavka. He recounted how much shared experiences had helped during their draft year.

"We could bounce things off each other and it kind of helped throughout the year. And now we can just look back on it and say 'we've done it.' "

He doesn't see the chats stopping though, with matey banter inevitable.

"We'll all stay in contact, and I'm sure it'll get pretty competitive about [playing our] first game."

Current rehab group. Rehab group basically means recovering from injury. No one is 'injured' and out of action, everyone is doing something at the moment, a pretty fit list for this time of year.

Ellis enters the fray
richmondfc.com.au
March 11, 2015 4:48 PM

Richmond’s first pick in last year’s National Draft, Corey Ellis, has joined in full training with the Tigers’ playing group for the first time.

Ellis, a talented inside midfielder, who was selected at pick 12 overall by Richmond, had been recovering from surgery to his right foot that he underwent late last year.

“Corey’s had a very steady progression, being a first-year player and given the surgery he had and how much he’d missed,” Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge told ‘Roar Vision’.

Hardwick expresses Ellis excitement

richmondfc.com.au
March 18, 2015 4:10 PM

“He’s a quality player – you’ve only got to watch him play,” Hardwick said.

“The things that he can do with the ball . . . he sort of looks like he’s not moving, but he manages to gain yards or make distance on the opposition.

“He’s going to be a really exciting prospect for us, whether it’s at the front part of the year . . . it’s probably not, because he’s going to be a little bit behind the eight-ball.

“But we expect him to be a player for us in the second part of the year.”

“Corey’s been terrific,” VFL coach Tim Clarke said.

“He was a little bit late to get going in the pre-season due to an operation, but he’s been building over the last few weeks.

“To come back and play the way he did on the weekend (against Frankston) really shows his class . . .

“It comes at a good time because our footy club needs a player like Corey to come in and have an impact.

“He’s very clean with his ball-handling skills and his ability to use the footy is terrific.

“I can see him having a real impact in senior footy once he gets comfortable.”

I don't think he should have been brought in so soon. FFS he didn't start running until February and full training only mid March barely played 2-3 full games at vfl level. I'm all for exposing kids to the big league but not before they're physically ready

If he can be one of the better players on ground in a wet game of VFL, playing in the guts,  then he is physically ready.
Whether he is technically ready is another thing.
I'm glad he's in.

Corey Ellis also provided an insight into the role he’s likely to play in his senior league debut . . .

I’m looking to play a bit of inside midfield.   Get the knees dirty, and head down, bum up, I guess,” he said.

“I’m just going to enjoy it (debut game) for what it is.  Not take too much pressure into the game and give it a good, hot crack.”

I'm all for pushing youth but bloody hell poor kid doesn't look ready. Tiny. No pre season, this was silly.

Poor Lennon works his ass off in the 2s for 2 years and gets looked over for aging Newman, Gordon, Lloyd and Co.

Ellis doesn't do a pre season, plays 1 good game and gets a senior gig.

Mixed messages from a circus football department..

Was impressed

2nd, 3rd efforts after a making mistake - is a good sign for me. We have so many blokes who make a mistake and just drop their heads, refuse to chase and stand still feeling sorry for themselves

He certainly did impress in 2nd half. Is tiny though, need to look after these kids, especially with no pre season. Wrapped for him to get through the game.

We aren't developing Lennon at all. He was a steal at 12. Bringing him in and subbing him out every game and the making him the sub is pointless. Give the kid a proper crack instead of gifting full games to Newman, Morris, Lloyd (until this game), Vickery and more. Give him a crack for an extended time.

Really loved Cory's game. Was refreshing to see someone attack and hunt the ball with 2nd and 3rd efforts. Just embarrassing that an 18 year old as small as he is can come out against men and show our boys how it's done. Credit where credit is due we did start hunting the ball a lot harder towards the end of the game but by memory Cory was the first to show the desperation to win the contest and then actually win it.

Corey Ellis interview:

AUDIO:  http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/2015-06-02/talking-tigers-episode-12-2015

On his aims for the rest of this season:   “I’d love to keep playing in the senior side and just play my role.  That’s No. 1.  And, to keep learning off the track with ‘Dusty’ and that kind of thing.”

On his Tigerland mentor:  “My mentor Dustin (Martin) has done a lot of things for me and I really appreciate that kind of thing.  He hasn’t given me a hell of a lot of footy advice.  But in terms of life, settling into the Club, the routine and that kind of thing, I can go to him for anything and he’ll help me out whatever it is . . . He loves the Club. A lot of the other players have been really helpful, too.”

On being compared to Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury:  “He was probably one of my idols growing up, so to be compared to him was a bit of an eye-opener.  If I could be half the player he is, I’d be pretty happy.”

Three set shots at goal for a return of 2.1. That's 67%.

Not including his rippa on the run in the last quarter last week.

Absoulate SILK ...

When C.Ellis 3 votes (you will be hearing this a lot in a few years time) has the football, turns to gold.

He set up Griffiths 1st goal, Deledio's 2nd and kicked one himself.

Also hit Cotchin on the chest inside 50 which Cotchin should have had a shot but went in short.

3 scoring involvements from a 5th game player.

What would Newman, Petterd, Thomas offer?

Keep pumping the young cubs!

Richo and the others on the Talking Tigers podcast were pumping up Corey and the preseason he's had.

“I loved what I saw from him last year,” Richardson said.

“It was just one kick over in Perth . . . that weighted left-foot kick to Brett Deledio in that game where the Tigers smashed ‘Freo’.  I thought, this bloke is going to be a 10-12-year player for the Club.

“Over the summer he’s got a lot of work in . . .

“He’s got class, he’s a smooth mover.  So, keep your eye on Corey Ellis.”

I shall commit suicide as my Samurai forefathers have done before me to regain honour
that would be good hurry up.  na just playin. but a serious question.
have you even seen this kid play judge.
me i have about 6 i would have taken in front of corey but i will not bag him not until we see what we have at the level.  we all have kids we like better than others. it doesnt mean we are right. only way to judge ellis is on HIS PERFORMANCES FROM HERE ON IN.

Said this when we drafted him. It still rings true imo. Let the kid actually prove himself, so far all we have had is the odd glimpse of skill and not much else.Reading these type of threads where its gone from bagging and disgust to right now where  if i didn't know better id think Ellis was an elite 150 game player instead of a second yr kid who has done nothing to date and played what just 6 games.

I have some concerns with this kid the same concerns i had when we drafted him but i wont be voicing them too many nuffies get too upset at any hint of negativety.
Why is it so hard for richmond people to actually wait until players prove themselves before they they start pronouncing them champs.

Yep Richo like most is sold on one kick. one tiny aspect of the game.Personally id just like to see him him get leather poisoning in the magoos for starters. If you dont get the pill to start with  you can't hurt the opposition. This kid according to FJ Was to be our inside savior i would like to see some inside attributes and an ability to get enough ball for starters.

Once again im not bagging him i think he has talent but im sure the nuffies will twist it that way.

Choco's latest cub watch is about Corey ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2016-03-02/chocos-cub-watch-ellis

* Corey took a bit of time.  I remember going down to Frankston last season and watching him play in the twos. He played really, really well and after that he got his chance to play in the seniors.

* He’s silky, he’s smart and he’s continually working on the other areas of his game.  He has a great degree of diligence and wants to be a better tackler, so we’re working on that as well.

* Most importantly, I think he belongs now.  He’s speaking up more in meetings, yelling for the ball and doing all those things that young people probably doubt themselves a little when they first come into the AFL.

* So, that’s what he’s doing and it all adds to him getting more possessions.  And when the ball’s in his hands, it’s a great result for us. He’s line-ball to play every game this year.  Right now, he’s looking good. His attributes in being able to work inside and outside and being a great deliverer of the ball are all great traits that we need in our side.

Ellis, 19, played his ninth senior league game in last Saturday’s clash with Adelaide at Etihad Stadium.  He finished with 16 disposals, including three rebound-50s.

“We’ve trialled Corey a little bit off half-back.  He’s a player that we feel has got incredible potential,” Hardwick told 3AW.

“His possession rate’s probably a little bit low at this stage.  The one thing Corey does, though, is when he does get the ball, you certainly notice he can use it.

“We’re just trying to get the ball into his hands a little bit more."

I'm hoping that Corey getting such valuable match experience puts him in good stead going forward. He seemed to have little impact on Saturday and at times rushed his kicking. If he can learn to settle himself when he has the time he'll be a very good player for us.

Well Damien, who haven't you tried off half back....?? Why don't you try someone in the center, or is half back and the backline all you think exists in a team??

“Corey’s grown again, I think, in his role,” Hardwick told Tiger great Matthew Richardson in this week’s episode of ‘Dimma’s Dissection’ on ‘Roar Vision’.

“His ability to use the ball is very good . . . the pleasing thing for us is he started to get a little bit more of it.

“We’ve been happy with the way he’s played down back.

“He played on (Mark) LeCras (last Friday night v West Coast) . . .  LeCras, we felt, didn’t have a great influence on the game.

“We’ve been trying to play him on those better type of players.

“So, we’ve been happy with his progress thus far.  He’s got a little bit of work to do, but we think he’s been a pretty good positive for us.

“Eventually we’d like to see him through the midfield . . .  But it’s only his second year, and he missed the majority of last year with injury.

“So, it’s going to be a little bit of time, but he’s very classy with the ball, and wins his own ball.”

Two of the three he did. He is slow and small but he has good skills. Needs to play inside but to do that he needs size.
I am all for playing kids including Corey to a degree, but Corey is one who would be better of spending most of his time in the twos. Imo he does not have the physical attributes to regularly play afl and shine atm.

some times they just have to be developed in the twos, saying that our twos are a grave yard lately. Ahh it is the old roundabout again.

He is not physically ready for an inside role  tone. he is way too slow for an outside role.  I agree play him in the middle but in the twos. We are killing this kid playing him in roles he cant perform at afl level.Very little ball he is physically  not up to it and is relying on scraps. Cmon mate you more than most understand the need to match up physical attributes to the role needed.

We dont need to play this kid at this stage yeah give him some games but let him develop and dominate in the twos where he physically has the best chance to compete.
You know what when he starts having 25 30 plus disposals in the twos and a third of them are contested then you will know he is ripe. he ius just not physically capable of playing to his strengths at afl atm

It sounds like a good idea to just give him a run in the middle. However the kid has to compete! He like Menedue at times are just spectating the contest. Hanging back and not winning contested ball. At AFL level we cant aford that and are getting smashed because of these two kids. Add to this unfortunately the 3 mature mids we have recruited to help in the middle are not up to it. Moore, Townsend and Macron are not even close to AFL standard.

We are in for lean year!

One of the problems is grigg and Houli often do the same thing. Yet they are not young, promising players, they are old hacks. Chaplin is good at it too. It's not just c Ellis and Menadue

Then you hve Townsend and Morris that have nfi

Makes it hard for Cotchin and miles types

Need to keep getting games into him.
He hasn't been that bad I wouldn't have thought.
Get him to 50 games and he will repay the patience.
Play him across the centre line.
Let's see what he can do.

Play Lennon, play Rioli, play Menadue- get games into them.
Disagree he looks shot if we had a good development program he would not be playing seniors.
Most of the juniors we have played have struggled, why is that ?.  Giving them needed experience is one thing, flogging them to death is another.

At the end of the day he has been no worse the Houli, Grigg and BEllis.
Playing him in the twos is a waste of time. Him playing amongst fat, local footballers isn't the answer. There are slower and skinnier kids running around at other clubs than Ellis. He needs games put into him and he needs to be played on a wing or HF. Dimma playing him across HB is useless.
He isn't going to win you games at the minute but you must find a way to fit in these kids otherwise they will stagnate in the twos with Griffiths and Elton.
Is the answer to just keep playing Houli and Grigg??

I am definitely for persevering with him. And yes at the least play him on the wing if you are worried about him getting smashed. plonking him in HB and expecting him to develop is going to kill this kid. HB is one of the hardest positions to develop in. Hodge struggled there in his first 3 seasons there. Enright struggled there also. Add in the fact that Ellis isn't naturally a defender and he has no hope in hell ever developing ball winning skills in HB.

Play him on the wing and as he gets size stick him in the middle. End of story.

Ellis back on track

richmondfc.com.au
19 January 2017

Richmond youngster Corey Ellis has returned to full pre-season training, as he looks to cement his spot in the Tigers’ midfield in 2017.

Ellis played a block of 11 games in the opening half of the 2016 season, but a groin injury ended his run and he finished the year in the VFL after six weeks sidelined.

“I had a little bit of a groin problem early pre-season but back to full training now,” Ellis said.

“We’re off to Maroochydore next week for camp, so looking forward a big week.”

It marks Ellis’s third pre-season campaign, after he was recruited to Richmond with pick No. 12 in the 2014 AFL National Draft.

“It’s still very challenging but I feel like I know my body better, which means I can prepare better and be able to play some better football hopefully,” he said.

The 20-year-old is focusing on the contested side of his game over the pre-season, with competition for a spot in the midfield intensified since the arrival of former Gold Coast Sun Dion Prestia and ex-Cat Josh Caddy.

Ellis said the pair’s arrival had added extra motivation.

“I don’t think it’s changed too much, it just means more competition for spots which is a very good thing,” he said.

“They’re both very good players and we know that, so blokes are going to have to step up if they want a spot in the team.”

Ellis also finds himself learning from new coaches this year, with Blake Caracella and Andrew McQualter responsible for the midfield group.

”They’ve both had a big impact,” he said.

“(Richmond development coach) Xavier Clarke is also working with me quite closely but all three combined are very knowledgeable and I can go to them for anything.”

Questions have to be asked again of our development at RFC.

I'm sick and tired of having players that are among the best VFL and then look absolutely light years away from AFL. This doesn't happen to every club. If it's not Lennon, its Ellis, if it's not Ellis it's McBean, if it's not McBean it's Elton.

Is it coincidence, is it mental, is it development, is it the way our AFL coaches use our fringe players? I hardly saw Ellis at all tonight. Did he spend an enormous amount of time on the bench? 2 games ago he had around 30 possessions and a handful of goals in the VFL. The jump is significant but this lack of impact by our fringe players is all too consistent.

Not sure what the point of repeating things like this claw. Yeah you were right but where does that get us? Nowhere. We can't change the past so there's no point continuing to raise past mistakes (of which there are too many to list). I wanted Lever with that pick but that doesn't get us anywhere too. “I thought he [Corey Ellis] grew into the game, which was great,” Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said.

“He’s just so clean with the ball. Every time he gets it, good things happen.

“I was pleased for him . . .

“He’s been toiling away a little bit at VFL level, and whatever he does looks a class above.

“We’ve just got to continue to get the ball in his hands because every time he gets it, good things happen.

“So I hope he takes enormous confidence out of that.

“I’ve got real strong belief that he could be a player for us, and I think our fans caught a glimpse of that today.”

Richmond: Corey Ellis

In a game the Tigers never looked like losing, youngster Corey Ellis showed promising signs. When the game was there to be won in the first term, Ellis bobbed up in the forward 50 and kicked two goals as the Tigers secured a 25-point lead at quarter time. Now into his third season, it was encouraging signs from the left-footed half-back.

It was said by some on forums etc that the day he was drafted he had gone out to his backyard and cried because he had achieved the dream of being drafted. That was a terrible sign, a sign that he felt he had achieved the goal when in reality he had only started a journey. Its been a poor couple of years for Corey, I wish him well, but I fear he isn't going to do much for us. Don't know what we could get for him now but maybe a new environment will help him in the future and he can find a place at a new club. I just think he is an average run of the mill player.

"He’s had a great last three or four weeks of footy, winning the ball inside."

Solid development

“I’ve been with him 18 months now, and he’s really coming on . . . He’s been injured a lot for the last four years and has missed a bit of training, so he’s trying to get his body the right size to play inside ‘mid’ against AFL players. It takes quite a while to develop that body and he’s slowly getting there. He’s had a great last three or four weeks of footy, winning the ball inside. You could see on the weekend (v Williamstown in the VFL), he played quite well and he put his name forward for (AFL) selection.”

Found his niche in the midfield

“He’s also actually playing in a consistent role now in the midfield . . . He’d been playing half-back, he’d played on a wing. The last four weeks he’s played inside mid and gone well. We all want to make sure that he can play a whole game of footy. He’s in the VFL for a reason – there’s some good players in front of him. He needs to make sure he can play at that consistent level the whole time.”

His on-field attributes

“He’s got really clean hands, he’s strong over the ball, has got great vision, and when he gets it you know something good is going to happen. “He’s a great left-foot kick . . . He’s really classy with the footy in his hands and he’s starting to get the ball 30 times a game now, too, which is really beneficial for the team.”

Trying to break into the senior side as an inside mid

“That’s where he’s playing at the moment and, along with Anthony Miles, who got a game (at senior level) last week and Sam Lloyd, they all need to be able to play somewhere else at the same time. But, in saying that, Corey’s been fantastic in there the last three or four weeks.”

Improved defensive work

“His tackle numbers have come up . . . On the weekend he had six tackles, and he’s getting more involved in the game. Not only is he winning the ball, but if he’s not winning the ball he’s tackling and making sure he’s got a defensive presence.”

A fork in the road moment for Corey. If he translates his VFL form over the past 6 weeks to the AFL and performs then he'll pretty much have a midfield spot for the rest of the season in a team gunning for another flag (given Conca is gone for the season). However, if he doesn't again then he possibly will have his papers stamped given this is his 4th year.

Yep

Can't argue with any of that MT

Agreed.....won't be doing him any favours if we play him off half back again.... :shh

How did we all see Corey's game tonight?

13 disposals (3 k, 10 hb, 6 con, 8 uncon) @ 92.3% efficency.
3 marks
1 tackle
4 1%ers

Thought he was ok tonight. He seemed a lot more at ease and did a couple of nice defensive things.

Sure he needs to do more and i would give him more games in a row now both Conca and Graham are oit of the midfield. Find out for sure and/or build some trade potential

I thought he was ok too. I think he should impose himself a lot more with tackling.

I liked his game last night.
The one thing that stood out to me is his composure with the footy. Not to mention he is a beautiful kick.
He will be a goood player for this club for a long time imo.

With potentially Grigg and Houli finishing up in the next year or so, he just needs to keep working hard and there will be a regular spot for him.

Thing is, whilst Grigg isn’t nearly as good a user as Ellis, he can gut run and is quick enough for AFL, Ellis struggles to make the grade.

Promising showing last night, but he’s had plenty of those so far. Needs to establish himself, throw his body around a bit. Sometimes all it takes is laying a strong tackle or barging through a contest to help a player realise they can play the game.

Reckon he will hold his spot but needs to get himself more involved

IMO will only hold his spot through other injuries. I don't understand this guy. Great skills, performs well at VFL but seems to completely go into his shell at AFL. Maybe that's just his role off half back, I don't know. One of the most vanilla players I have seen in a long time.

With Foss and Houli coming back maybe play in the guts next week.

Solid - won key contests throughout the game. Play him full time in the guts  :banghead

Still far from convinced but considering he was basically playing Broad's role -which he couldn't be less suited to- while Broad was playing Vlastuin's role, I thought he did pretty well....still needs to be played in the guts to have fighting chance of making it at AFL level though... :shh

Hopefully with Graham coming out of the side due to injury frees up Ellis for a string of anywhere between 3 to 5 games and we then know if he is ready for September action or not.
I love the kid, love the way he dominates in VFL but I think it's time we try and persist with him or make a call.
Like most, I'm not sure he's up to it or not.

Me too. I had high hopes but he’s clearly too soft. And what happened to his foot skills? Did he leave them in Melbourne? Maybe he’s just soooo timid he can’t even complete a basic skill.

I think it’s obvious now...........

........never recruit any player with the surname Ellis.

Hopefully don’t see him in the senior side again. Never understood why so many hold hope for him to make it. He’s slow af and timid. Not the type you want next to you when the whips are cracking as yesterday clearly showed. Did the same thing down at Geelong last year

Achieved his goals when he got drafted. not good enough. When he cried on the day he got drafted it was a really bad sign. Anyway he had a chance and it hasn't worked out. Good luck to him in the future his future in footy is going to be as VFL listed player.
