Tigers to stew for two weeks: Hardwick
By Luke Holmesby
Sun 29 May, 2011

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has refused to blame a trip to the top end of Australia as the reason his side suffered a shock loss to Port Adelaide.

The Tigers went down by 15 points after upsetting Essendon just seven days earlier.

It was their first home game in the warm, humid conditions of Darwin but Hardwick said that had nothing to do with his team's poor performance.

"You can't use where we play as an excuse for a poor effort. At the end of the day we play at a footy ground that has got four sticks at either end and the ball is round so nothing much changes," Hardwick said.

"I thought we fumbled all night. I thought they (Port Adelaide) were a lot cleaner with their disposal, their efficiency by hand and foot seemed a lot better than ours and it was uncharacteristic of our guys.

"It was a real let down, we set ourselves up for the game, we thought we came here with good preparation and didn't play anywhere near well enough."

Hardwick said the Tigers struggled to cope with Port Adelaide's relentless defensive pressure and played right into their hands.

"We call it referring pressure. We were going around in circles at one stage. A lot of that was due to Port's pressure, they out tackled us by 27 or something like that," he said.

"Their pressure around the ball was a lot better than ours and forced us into handball chains which we didn't want. We tried to rectify that, mainly in the second quarter, I think we started to get on top of it but we just couldn't capitalise on some of our chances."

The Tigers will have time to regroup after the disappointing loss with the bye next week, but Hardwick said the week off came at a bad time.

"I wish we were playing next week to be perfectly honest. We've got to stew on this loss for two weeks. We'll give the guys a couple of days off then we'll hit the training track pretty hard," he said.

"It's probably the poorest we've played for quite some time. It is disappointing and the thing that really hurts us is we've got to wait two weeks to get back and have another crack at it."

Don't get too close to the players dimma, we have seen it all before. That effort was all too characteristic to me. 5 weeks means nothing - this group looks good but there is a long way to go - ask the Demons

instead we had players out late in Melbourne on a thursday night while Port trained till 10pm under lights
Port paid $$$ to go a day early and won the 4 points ( mind you Port have less money than us )
who is the basket case now ????

Maybe sitting on a bad lose for 2 weeks to stew isn't that bad. Might wake up alot of supports to where we really are. Until we can work out these prone loses to teams we should beat we won't rise up the ladder very far. I've never expected to make finals this year. I'd love it if we did dont get me wrong.

The problem with the argument here is about 35,000 less Richmond supporters for the opposition to deal with!

Who cares, the players need to learn to win without the backing of a large crowd

Youre dead right! So lets learn how to win first and then sell our games to Darwin!

Was a lot more Tiger support than Port Inf.  Trouble was, we never got going well enough to bring the crowd into it.

so we play a final at aami or scg or subiaco etc cant rely on the home crowd then either.

Not wrong there smokey - hardly any support for Port to be honest & makes the "effort" and I use that term very loosely indeed all the more disappointing and UNACCEPTABLE

did i say thius yr. all im saying is whats the difference as a club and a team we have to learn to play well anywhere. no time like the now i reckon. if we cant beat port at a neutral venue how the hell do you expect to beat all those interstate teams at home. one thing for sure we arent collingwood.

Chicken and the egg, in order to develop our kids properly so we will win more games we need to sell home games to make money to pay for development coaches and better facilities such as our own reserves team and resurfacing PRO

Dream becomes nightmare
Michael Gleeson, Darwin
May 30, 2011

RIDING the tide of the Dreamtime victory Richmond came north to Darwin and got lost in its own dreams, playing as poorly as it had in a year and leaving coach Damien Hardwick bitterly disappointed and stewing on the fact that with a bye this week it would be a fortnight before it could atone for the ugly lapse.

Richmond was a mess from start to finish in the match that - mercifully for fans - was played in the twilight zone of Saturday night, interstate and on pay TV only but also in the half-light of a ground of failing lights.

Played on a warm Darwin night in dry but humid, and so slippery, conditions, both sides fumbled terribly and executed skills poorly. Port Adelaide, however, was able to adapt to the conditions while Richmond overdid the handball. It was forced into indecision and panicked. It was ugly.

''It's probably the poorest we have played for quite some time, so it is disappointing and the thing that really hurts us is we have to wait two weeks before we get back and have another crack,'' Hardwick said.

''No doubt we over-handballed it,'' he admitted. ''We call it referring pressure, we were going around in circles there at one stage and a lot of that was due to Port's pressure.

''I think they out-tackled us by a differential of 27 so their pressure around the ball was a lot better than ours and forced us into those handball chains we didn't want. We tried to rectify that mainly in the second quarter when we started to get on top of it but we couldn't capitalise on some of our chances and I think we ended up with three goals seven for the quarter.''

In a stalemate contest early, neither side could score for large chunks of the game, and the Tigers' second quarter, in particular, was an exercise in frustration when in a period when, with 18 inside 50s to 13 they should have broken the game open, they squandered their chances. It meant that in the second half they began to just surge at goal and scrap for an opportunist chance rather than through deliberate, structured play.

''We didn't use the ball well at all and because our skills were relatively down I thought we just had to attack the goal face more and scrounge our goals,'' Hardwick said. ''I think our retained possession inside 50 over the last six weeks has had us number two in the AFL. As of last night I would say it would be well down.

''I don't know if emotion had anything to do with it [after the Dreamtime win], I just didn't think we hunted the ball anywhere near hard enough and Port's ability to handle the ball was outstanding and I thought ours was very, very poor. So it was a real let down.

''By the way our guys were handling the ball you would have thought it was slippery. ''I thought we fumbled the ball all night. I thought they were a lot cleaner with their disposal, their efficiency by hand and foot seemed a lot better than ours and it was uncharacteristic of our guys.

''I wish we were playing next week to be honest. We have to stew on this loss for two weeks so we will give the guys a couple of days off then hit the training track pretty hard.''

In losing to Port, bottom of the ladder with only one win before Saturday night, the Tigers wasted a great opportunity to claim a spot in the top eight.

I don't see the point on stewing over it. In fact the quicker it is forgotten the better.
Enjoy the break I say and look forward to the 2nd half of the season.
