Lyon: Richmond loss a ‘little warning bell’

By SEN

Garry Lyon suggests the alarm bells aren’t too far away for Richmond.

The reigning premiers were beaten by 36 points by Adelaide last night in the opening match of Round 2.

The Tigers won the 2017 flag on the back of playing fierce contested footy accompanied by manic pressure but according to Lyon, that was severely lacking at the Adelaide Oval.

The Melbourne champion says he has Richmond ‘on notice’ following their disappointing performance from a contested ball viewpoint.

“I can’t help but watch the Tigers, as I did the Dogs last year,” he said on AFL Nation’s pre-game show.

“And I’m watching to see whether there’s a little bit off, (but) the sample’s very small.

“40 contested possession differential. I’m not going to go with it just yet, but it’s on notice for me.

“Because that says they only need two players to be slightly off. Last year I would’ve put my head in the fire for that contested ball but I’m not today.

“It’s a little warning bell. I think we watch that with great interest.”

Gary’s point is valid.

The contested ball differential against the Crows was concerning.

Hawks will smash us if we don’t harden up in the guts.

Nah no bells necessary at all, simply a refresher that we can lose if we don't play well.
Lose the next four out of five, then there's somethin to start thinkin about.

I marked the Adelaide game ,when I first saw the draw ,as a likely loss, so a little surprised at that the warning bells are now  ringing
Adelaide lost to Essenden the week before and no problem, just warming up to play the Tigers

Think the warning bells are more to do with losing the contested ball by almost 50 and the fact we’ve given up an average of over 100 points in the first 2 games when we were under 80 last year. Hopefully the boys are just easing back into it.

Ring the bell if We lose the majority of 2018 games, remember a football season is not a sprint it's a marathon.

+1

Looking back to last year a lot of the top sides like ours were just getting points whatever way they could in the first half. It wasn't until the second half of the year did teams like us, Swans and Geelong turn it on. We can't afford to cough up too many games but I don't care how we get wins at this stage as long as we hit form again when it matters.
