Richmond bid on St Kilda Next-Generation Academy prospect Bigoa Nyuon. A mistake by St Kilda not to match bids. A great selection by Richmond! Has a lot of Aliir Aliir with his athleticism and the way he reads it and takes intercept marks. #AFLDraft

Nyoun joins Tigers

Richmond has used its fifth selection (No. 54 overall) in the 2019 national draft to recruit Dandenong Stingrays versatile tall Bigoa Nyoun.

Here is a summary of what Richmond fans can expect to see from Nyoun on-field...

Club: Dandenong Stingrays
State: Victoria
Height: 195cm
Weight: 87kg

Bigoa played with the Dandenong Stingrays this year and played one game for Vic Country at National level. He played a mix of key position forward, back and in the ruck. He showed potential in all areas of the ground. We liked the fact Bigoa improved throughout the year and was starting to show his rare athleticism more as the year wore on.

His Round 18 game against the Murray Bushrangers where he had 14 disposals, seven marks and two goals as a ruck/forward was very impressive. Bigoa’s athleticism for a 195cm player shone through at the Victorian Draft Combine where he tested quickest for speed with a 2.85 second 20m run. His vertical leap and agility were also in the elite bracket.

Bigoa has the potential to develop into a strong and athletic key position player. We think he will grow in our program and make the most of his considerable talent.

A member of St Kilda’s Next Generation Academy, Nyuon is an athlete who has testing results to be believed. A hard worker with some great goal celebrations to boot, Nyuon recorded a 92cm running and 73cm standing vertical leap, as well as a 2.86-second 20m sprint and 8.24-second agility test. Keeping in mind he is a 195cm ruck. A raw talent, he has to improve his tank, but is an excitement machine. With his elite athleticism and ability to have big moments in games – such as kicking two goals in the final quarter of the knockout Wildcard Round against Murray Bushrangers, Nyuon has shown in glimpses what he is capable of. A long-term prospect who the Saints would have to be considering as a rookie, Nyuon is a hard worker who is hard to bring down and is likely to be a player that will need patience to fully develop, but very few can do what he can in terms of his size and athleticism.

STRENGTHS: Versatility, athleticism, upside, vertical leap
IMPROVEMENTS: Endurance, raw

Saints prospect 'Biggy' on the rise after strong showing

Chris Doerre
ESPN
24 July 2019

Stepping up as the No. 1 ruckman after Bailey Schmidt left the field early, Bigoa Nyuon more than filled the void. The younger brother of former Essendon rookie Gach, 'Biggy' is a St Kilda Next-Generation Academy prospect with the capability of filling a key position post or pushing through the ruck.

Biggy's brother Gach was a high leaping, athletic tap ruckman who appeared unstoppable at centre bounces but offered little else. While Biggy isn't as tall at 196cm, what makes him intriguing is the fact he can play through the ruck and outleap opponents to tap the ball to advantage, as he showed in Dandenong's loss to Gippsland. But he also has good agility, leads up at the ball, has the capability to push forward and hit the scoreboard or play in defence. The athletic tall managed 14 disposals, six marks and a game high 22 hitouts.

Having been asked to play all over the field and given little opportunity to gain continuity in one position, there is an untapped feel to Biggy who has a game most comparable to Swans defender Aliir Aliir.

Likely to be selected late draft or as a rookie by St Kilda, Biggy has looked most at home in defence where his combination of athleticism which will help him shut down opposition forwards, reading of the drop of the ball and intercept marking suggest he has significant scope to develop.

Under-18 Trial Matches

Game 1: Allies vs. Victoria Country

Making strong progress and growing into his role in defence, athletic key defender Bigoa Nyuon was strong in one-on-one contests, held his position and kept his feet. He took several intercept marks and his work at ground level impressed. The play of the athletic defender showed shades of Aliir Aliir. Nyuon posted 12 disposals, four marks and six rebound 50s.

Bigoa Nyuon (VIC - St Kilda next-generation academy)

Position: Key defence
Expected range: late-undrafted

Why he can make it:
Throughout the season, Nyuon has been asked to play all over the field and has been unable to gain the continuity needed to establish himself in one set position.

'Biggy' has looked most at home in defence, with his reading of the drop of the ball and intercept marking standout features. He's a freakish athlete, running the 20m sprint in 2.855 at the state combine (a time that would have taken out first place at the national combine, had he been invited), is a fluid mover with excellent agility and is a high leaper. With these athletic gifts, Biggy has the closing speed to make life difficult for leading forwards and the aerial prowess to compete in the air.

When asked to play through the ruck this year, Biggy -- despite standing at just 195cm - has consistently outleaped his opponents and tapped the ball to advantage. While as a key forward Nyuon leads up at the ball effectively and has the capacity to hit the scoreboard.

A high-impact-per-possession player, Nyuon averaged just 11 disposals, four marks in NAB League and four marks during the Under-18 Championships. His endurance will be the other area needing addressing.

There is an untapped feel to Biggy, who if given the opportunity to settle as a key defender, has the scope to develop into something like Sydney's Aliir Aliir.

Few clubs have expressed strong draft interest, but aside from projected first-round choice Fischer McAsey, Biggy may be that next most promising key defender.

'I'm lost for words': Mum's journey inspires Sudanese refugee towards AFL dream

Sean Sowerby
7News
21 November 2019

Big by name, big by nature.

Meet Bigoa Nyuon – but you can call him Biggie.

"I've actually had the nickname for a while now," Nyuon laughs.

"I think I got it in kindergarten and now it's stuck. It's like that’s my real name now."

The St Kilda Next Generation Academy footballer is a 196cm tall, super-quick utility.

Setting aside his football prospects, Biggie's life story is even more interesting than his name.

He was born in Nairobi, Kenya into a South Sudanese family displaced and divided by the war.

Fleeing the civil war, their family was split between refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya.

"You look back every now and then and just think 'how did mum do this?'" Nyuon tells 7NEWS.

"I'm in shock just thinking about what she had to do to get all eight of us here to Australia – I'm lost for words."

A proud Australian, Biggie can't remember life as a three-year-old living in a refugee camp but his older sister Nyadol, 18 years old as the family reached Australia, will never forget their journey.

Like many Sudanese families rocked by the war, tragedy struck when their father was killed in the conflict.

"Our fathers were based in South Sudan fighting the war and it was mum who took us out (of the country)," Nyadol said.

Arriving in Melbourne with no money and very few belongings Biggie's mother Mary had to work three jobs, leaving her older children to raise the younger ones – including Biggie.

Having grown up without a dad, he is quick to recognise Nyadol's significant contribution to his adolescence.

As far as role models go, you won't find a better influence than Biggie's sister, who has studied hard to become a top lawyer and human rights advocate.

"Nyadol almost played that father figure which I didn’t have growing up," Biggie says.

"She's been a massive part of my development as a footballer and as a young man."

To assimilate into Australian culture, Biggie joined an Auskick program.

The first time he touched a football was on the MCG playing in a half-time Auskick game during a Collingwood v North Melbourne match.

Ever since, while making his way from the Rowville footy club to the Dandenong Stingrays and St Kilda's academy, he's dreamed of becoming an AFL footballer.

"Just want to make my family proud and play AFL and be on TV," Biggie explains.

"I don't know if words can describe how anybody would feel after being drafted."

He looks up to Sudanese footballers Majak Daw and Aliir Aliir, whose paths to Australia and the AFL are familiar to Biggie, and he's determined to follow in their footsteps and become a Sudanese-Australian role model.

Biggie's older brother Gach Nyuon spent a year on Essendon's playing list, but they're two very different footballers.

"I'm bigger, stronger and faster," the younger sibling laughs.

Managed by the brother of Melbourne Demons star Christian Petracca, Julian of Hemisphere Management, Biggie is in good hands and expects to be drafted in the second round.

Biggie is almost two metres tall but he smashed the 20m sprint at the Victorian state draft combine, clocking the fastest time of all of this year's potential draftees.

An incredible athlete, he's proved very good at reading the play and projects as a dangerous, tall and fast intercepting defender who can pinch-hit in the ruck – not unlike his AFL inspiration Aliir.

Biggie and the Nyuon clan all have their fingers crossed his football dream will come true at the AFL draft on Wednesday night or Thursday.

His sister says the family of eight won't be able to control themselves if an AFL club recruiter reads out Biggie's name.

"We'll be dancing and screaming and shouting so it's going to be massive but whatever happens we'll always be here for him," Nyadol said.

Richmond recruiting manager Matthew Clarke said Nyuon, nicknamed 'Biggy', could play a variety of positions.

"Biggy's a great athlete. He's a pretty good footballer, but he's a great athlete. He's got really good speed, great vertical (jump), fantastic agility and he's got really good endurance.

"He's a multiple-package, so he's got real potential."

Richmond’s National Recruiting Manager Matthew Clarke on Nyuon:

Our fifth and final selection of the national draft was Dandenong Stingrays versatile tall Bigoa Nyoun. A very athletic talent, another academy player and another solid addition to the Club.

"'Biggy' is a really good athlete. Really quick, good endurance, great vertical, he's got some great skill and mark of the footy. He’s played in all positions at Dandenong and a bit at Vic Country, forward, back and in the ruck. He’s got great scope, really excited to see Biggy come in."

Next Biggie thing: Saints could regret draft call

Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun
3 Dec 2019

The Sudanese refugee Richmond drafted from St Kilda’s Next Generation Academy has been hailed a brilliant athlete who has “just scratched the surface” of his football potential.

The Tigers secured 196cm defender Bigoa ‘Biggie’ Nyuon when the Saints declined to match their bid of pick No. 54 at Thursday night’s draft.

Rowville Secondary said the Saints “did a really good job” developing Nyuon, although come draft night they chose to take Gippsland Power midfielder Leo Connolly at No. 64 instead of Nyuon.

Nyuon – who has was four sisters and three brothers – was nicknamed ‘Biggie’ by his kindergarten teacher because he loved rapper Biggie Smalls.

The family fled to Australia when Nyuon was a toddler and all eight children were raised by single mother Mary in Cranbourne.

Bigoa Nyuon was drafted from St Kilda’s Next Generation Academy by Richmond. Picture: Tony Gough.

Nyuon excelled at athletics early when Mary decreed football too rough before she eventually let her son play for Hallam.

Older brother Gach spent 2016 on Essendon’s rookie list. Nyuon will join fellow Sudanese talent Mabior Chol at Punt Rd as they hope to join Aliir Aliir (Sydney) and Majak Daw (North Melbourne) as success stories.

“The Tigers have got a bloke who’s 201cm (listed at 196cm) and athletically through the roof,” Rowville football academy boss Darren Bewick said.

“He tested the fastest over the state and national combine for speed (20m in 2.85 sec), he’s got a great leap, he kicks the ball really well and I think we’ve just scratched the surface.

“He’s got all the attributes to be a really good player.”

The popular teenager returned to Rowville to address the Year 7-8 students on Friday.

“He’s a very likeable young man, a king down here, and he spoke about what it meant and how he got to speak to Dusty Martin that night,” Bewick said.

“The Tigers have got a ripper kid and I hope they’re able to furnish his ability. If they can they’re going to have a really, really good player.

“For him to be able to firstly come to this country as a (three-year-old) with eight brothers and sisters and his mum taking care of them all … and he’s never forgotten that, he’s really appreciative of people that help him along the journey.

“He’s a ripping kid. He’s taken on everything that’s been presented to him, and sometimes he’s needed a little bit of a push, like all boys, but he loves the game and loves the team aspect of it and it’s only going to hold him in good stead.

“His journey has just begun and I think it can really turn into a really special one.”

Saints NGA manager Jack Henty spoke to Rowville regularly and helped get Nyuon to school for early study sessions every Thursday.

“The Saints were fantastic,” Rowville sports academy director Craig Jamieson said.

“I spoke to Jack once every couple of weeks and we met with Biggy every three or four weeks checking on how he was going with his subjects.”

Nyuon will join fellow Rowville alumni Jon Patton (Hawthorn), Hayden Crozier (Western Bulldogs), Tom North (Fremantle), Taylor Garner (North Melbourne), Taylin Duman (Fremantle), Jack Maibaum (Sydney) and Sam Hayes (Port Adelaide) on an AFL list in 2020.

Nyuon played a mix of key positions for the Dandenong Stingrays this year.

His rare athleticism shone at the Victorian Draft Combine where he tested quickest in the 20m sprint, recording 2.85 seconds. His vertical leap and agility were also in the elite bracket.

At 195cm, the versatile tall is more than happy to play anywhere on the football field. He is, however, looking forward to refining his craft as a defender.

“I’d like to further develop my football as a backman and play a lockdown defender role,” he said.

“While also having the ability to run off and use my pace and speed to create movement from the back and open up the game a bit.”

Hope he comes on quick and tales over from Grimes as the third tall.
Put Stack back to the other pocket and Grimes to HB and it's all perfect.

Strong, athletic backline with incredible speed in rebounding. Just what we need to revitalise.

How is Chol a success story hes done virtually nothing at AFL level.

Daw has been at NM  for a whopping 10 yrs drafted 2010 i believe for a paltry 50 games.
Aliir was drafted back in 2013 and played 50 games.

Chol was as skinny as and is till undersized what 5 yrs on.
The other three were all around 86 87 kg when drafted. Nyuon will take a few yrs to bulk and be ready to compete but he does have a good footy grounding.
Bit of a worry though that the saints didnt see enough in him to warrant such a late pick.

Having said that i like the pick nothing to lose here and an awful lot to gain if it works out.
If hes a kpd and things do work out we will have two very athletic quick kpds in him and Balta. Heres hoping for both of them.
And lets be honest with Rance gone and Astbury pushing toward 30 we will need em to push on.

Would have been impressed if Chol had done the headbutting, he doesn't show nearly enough aggression from the games he has played at the top level so far.

Will be moved to the rookie list along with Cumberland. Biggie has the scope to be a long term player however needs further education on the key back position. I think Cumberland is lucky to get a rookie position.

From what the handful of his matches I've seen, Cumberland definitely showed some AFL traits but also some glaring deficiencies...jury still out for me but will need to take some big steps forward next year... :shh

He was in good form ( kicked a few goals) at the end of the year and the club said he was unlucky not to get a senior game . I thought he should have got a game over George and Arntts just to give us a look and give him some experience

I am no longer on a Primary or Rookie list of an AFL Club but want to continue playing AFL football. What do I do?

You will have to re-nominate for the NAB AFL Draft.

This is what the AFL draft nomination booklet says:

Q: If I did not nominate for the NAB AFL Draft, can I then nominate for the NAB AFL Pre-Season and/or Rookie Draft?

A: No, because part of the eligibility criteria for the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft and/or Rookie Draft is that a player must have been eligible for, but not selected at, the NAB AFL Draft. The only exception is a player who has been delisted from the Primary List by an AFL club, who can stipulate if their nomination form is to be held over for the Pre-Season Draft.

Page 4: https://nabafldraftnom.com.au/images/form/booklet_mens.pdf

Unlike Biggie, Cumberland didn't nominate for the national draft. So I presume he stipulated that his nomination be held over to the PSD/rookie drafts.

Big moment from Biggy

When Josh Gibcus was ruled out on Thursday after entering health and safety protocols, the general consensus was off-season signing Robbie Tarrant would return to Richmond's back six. Instead of the veteran, Damien Hardwick turned to a rookie who had never played a game. Bigoa Nyuon didn’t let him down. The 20-year-old, who was born in Kenya into a South Sudanese family displaced by war, wasn't overawed by the level. Gibcus is expected to return next weekend, but with Noah Balta hurting his hamstring, Nyuon should hold his place in the back six.

Biggie's stats today:

6 disposals (2k, 4h, 3c, 3u, 100% eff.)
0 marks
2 tackles
3 intercepts
68 metres gained
2 score involvements
1 free for
94% time on ground

Biggie initially was on Gunston then played on Lewis in the last qtr after Balta was subbed off.

Hardwick said the Tigers will give Nyuon another opportunity to stake his claim for a spot in the 22 when Richmond hosts Essendon at the MCG next Saturday night.

"I'd say he'll play with Noah going out next week, so he'll continue to grow and learn. We love the strengths that he brings; he is infectious when he is playing well. We look forward to him continuing that," he said.

"He started to cramp at the end but he is only going to get better. We threw him in the deep end, but you can play 50 games at VFL level; you play one game of AFL and you're going to learn a hell of a lot more. He'll grow, he'll learn from it."

From refugee camp to AFL debut: Biggie's meteoric rise

Bigoa Nyuon has enjoyed a remarkable rise, making his AFL debut for the Tigers on the weekend

By Josh Gabelich
afl.com.au
17 May 2022

BIGOA Nyuon had to forge his mum's signature before he could play his first game of footy in primary school. She thought the sport was too rough and wouldn't let him play. Little did she know her son had convinced his uncle to pay the enrolment fees and he was playing with his mates anyway.

It only took a few weeks before the secret emerged one Sunday morning when there was a knock on the front door and a coach was standing there ready to drive Nyuon to a game. But by then, Nyuon was hooked on footy.

Fast forward a decade and Nyuon was signing his own name for Richmond supporters inside the MCG on Saturday after making his debut against Hawthorn in front of 40,663 people, completing a remarkable journey to the AFL.

Nyuon was born in Nairobi and spent the first few years of his life living in a refugee camp, fleeing the civil war in South Sudan, where his father was killed in battle. The family of eight children was split between refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya before they were finally accepted as migrants to Australia and settled in south-east Melbourne in 2005.

The 20-year-old was too young to remember life in a refugee camp, but his older siblings have told enough stories for him to know how horrible it was. Most of them were in the rooms before the opening bounce on Saturday when club great Bachar Houli presented him with his jumper, including his sister Nyadol Nyuon, who is a commercial litigator and human rights advocate that left Fox Footy viewers on the brink of tears during a powerful pre-game interview.

Nyuon's mum is currently back in South Sudan for a few months and couldn't be at the ground on the weekend, but if he continues to build his game, there will be other opportunities to watch him running around in the famous yellow and black when she gets back next month.

"It still doesn't feel real to me; it's taking some time to sink in. Even going out there in the first quarter I was like, 'Wow, this is a whole different view from when you're sitting in the stands,'" Nyuon told AFL.com.au in the rooms on Saturday night.

"It is crazy to me that I've just been able to complete one AFL football game. I hope there's many more to come. This is something that I will definitely cherish for the rest of my life."

When Josh Gibcus entered the AFL's health and safety protocols last Thursday morning, most expected Richmond to turn to veteran key defender Robbie Tarrant to replace last year's pick No.9 in defence.

But Richmond coach Damien Hardwick and the match committee inside the Swinburne Centre had another idea. They had seen enough to go with the young man affectionately known as 'Biggie' over the 33-year-old the club had lured from North Melbourne.

"I found out on Thursday just after training. I was chilling, waiting around for a massage and Will Thursfield came downstairs and told me to put some shoes on, that we had a meeting," Nyuon said.

"I was a bit concerned at the time. He ended up telling me to walk to Dimma's office. I turned around and he'd just left me to walk in there myself. I went in and Dimma told me to sit down and then told me that my childhood dream would be coming true this weekend. It was definitely something I'll never forget."

Nyuon thought his AFL dream might have been over late last year when Richmond delisted him after two years on the senior list. But Richmond GM of football talent Blair Hartley quickly put him at ease, providing Nyuon with a lifeline via the NAB AFL Rookie Draft and a message for the summer ahead.

"For a little bit I did think it was over. But the reassurance I got from Blair Hartley and from Dimma at the end of the year was amazing," he said.

"They told me to make sure I had the best pre-season possible. I thought I put myself in a great position this year to make an impact at AFL level. It was just about cracking in in the pre-season, putting the work in and we're here now."

Nyuon backed up a strong pre-season by taking his game to the next level under VFL coach Steve Morris across the first two months of the season, putting the Dandenong Stingrays product in a position where the coaching department felt comfortable introducing him to the big time on Jack Gunston – before the triple premiership Hawk was substituted out of the game with an ankle injury.

"I was able to string some good games together in the VFL. I knew if I stayed consistent in my role, my opportunity would come along one day. I didn't know it was going to be this early in the season, but I'm super thrilled with it," he said.

"The key message for me was to be consistent with my aerial power and my ability to spoil and impact as many aerial contests as I can. I was able to do that in the VFL."

Before Nyuon arrived at Punt Road via pick No.54 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, he was a member of St Kilda's Next Generation Academy, where he had the opportunity to train with the Saints from time to time at RSEA Park.

The Saints chose not to match Richmond's bid for him, but Nyuon is still appreciative of the chance to spend time inside an elite environment which ultimately led to him being drafted.

"I was super grateful for the opportunity they gave," he said. "The ability to train with elite players at the very top when I was 15 and 16, not many people get that opportunity. It put me in a very good spot to get picked up, even if it wasn't by them. I'll be grateful for the opportunity they gave me."

If Nyuon can continue along this trajectory, he will need to perfect his signature. There will be more jumpers and more contracts to sign in future. He has come a long way from that forged signature.

Looks to me he still lacks plenty of size to be playing KPD.

Not sure about him but hey there is time still only 21.

Athletic tall Bigoa Nyuon will return to Richmond for a fourth season after putting pen to paper on a new one-year extension.

The 21-year-old had a breakthrough season in 2022, earning his AFL debut in Round 9, where he played as a key defender against Hawthorn at the MCG.

Nyuon was used across various roles in 17 games at VFL level, averaging 12.8 disposals and 5.6 marks per game.

Most comfortable in defence, Nyuon stood out with his ability to intercept mark and launch an attack. The 197cm youngster can also play on various sized opponents due to his leap and speed.

Nyuon was initially drafted to the Tigers with the Club’s third selection at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft (No. 54 overall) before he was re-selected at last year’s Rookie Draft.

The former Dandenong Stingray and St Kilda Academy player will remain on Richmond’s rookie list in 2023.

Richmond General Manager- Football Talent Blair Hartley said that 'Biggie' took another step forward in 2022.

“After an interrupted first two seasons at the Club, it was great to see Biggie get the opportunity to play consistently this year,” he said.

“Biggie worked hard to earn his AFL debut, and we hope that small taste of senior football can serve as motivation for him this upcoming pre-season and for 2023.

“He has some really exciting traits and we look forward to him continuing to grow as a player in the next 12 months.”

Got a way to go before he becomes a senior player but keen to see if someone like Rutten can take him to the next level over pre-season.

Has great attributes but so do many others

Jeez how's the leap? Haha

I know the Bullants aren't a good side but those were some great defensive marks. Shame there wasn't more footage of his ruck work.

Surprised he wasn't in the conversation to play back.

with broad out surely they might roll the dice on him? can take a contested mark in defensive 50 which to me is a savagely underrated stat.

Tigers tall being monitored

Bigoa “Biggy” Nyuon’s move into the ruck this season for Richmond’s reserves has caught the eye of rival clubs looking for versatile talls.

Nyuon has largely played as a key defender while on the Tigers’ AFL list, including in his sole senior game last year, but did spend time as a ruckman in his junior days and stands 197 centimetres tall.

The 21-year-old recorded 22 hit-outs in limited game time on Sunday against Gold Coast’s Ned Moyle – the VFL’s best ruckman – in his return from an ankle setback. He also recorded a combined nine intercept marks and had 30 hit-outs in each of the opening two rounds.

Nyuon is out of contract at season’s end.

Yeah tbh as a supporter I'm losing interest in seeing the old heroes get battered. They're not dim sims (even if they're playing like it).

I'd be much more interested if we played the kids and had something interesting and promising to watch the games for.

NORTH ASSESSES TALLS MARKET

NORTH Melbourne has met with Richmond youngster Bigoa Nyuon as the Kangaroos assess the talls market.

Nyuon, who has played one AFL game when he made his debut in 2022, is out of contract at the Tigers and has spoken to the Roos.

The Kangaroos have been exploring the options available in the talls department, with Nyuon one of the possible versatile talls available.

The 22-year-old was originally a member of St Kilda's Next Generation Academy but was drafted by the Tigers in 2019.

Nyuon, having been previously delisted by the Tigers, could move as an unrestricted free agent.

No. FA compo is based on salary. If a player's deal is in the bottom 30% of contracts (as Biggie would be) then there's no compo.

-------

If a free agent’s deal is in the top five per cent of contracts for that year, the former club will receive a first-round pick directly after its own.

If a deal is in the next 10 per cent of contracts, the compensation would come at the end of the first round. The next 15 per cent result in second-round compensation while those in the bottom 30 per cent result in no compensation.

geez we should be delisting him and here we have people splitting hairs because NM may pick him up.

We have regressed in a big way and gone back into bad old days of practice. We have got absolutely nothing out of this guy in how many seasons.
Time to move on and if a club is prepared to take him on and he improves who cares? thats the system.

Bigoa Nyuon was set to join @NMFCOfficial as an unrestricted free agent by 5pm but it would have diluted the club’s compensation for Ben McKay.

He’s still likely to get to Arden Street, though it will need to be via a trade or the pre-season draft now.

The Kangaroos are also set to ramp up discussions with free agent key defender Bigoa Nyuon from Richmond in the coming days, but have not yet offered the 22-year-old a formal contract.

Bigoa Nyuon

The Richmond youngster looks likely to join North Melbourne, but the Roos didn't want to sign him as a free agent so not to risk any diluting of the compensation pick (No.3 overall) they received for Ben McKay's exit to Essendon. They can either trade in the versatile tall or wait and grab him in the pre-season draft but he looks headed to Arden Street.

We gave him up for a set of steak knives. I thought he had potential but I was only going to give him this year. He needed to body contact more IMHO, impose himself on contests. He was athletic enough. The thing is do we have something in the wings? We've had quite a few tall prospects come and go now.

According to the experts only about 45-50 picks will actually be used, so if we use it, it will effectively be pick 45-50-odd.

Nyuon has played just one AFL game, making his debut for the Tigers against Hawthorn in round nine, 2022.

"Biggie is an athletic key defender who stood out to us with his ability to take intercept marks and his versatility to play as ruck," North head of football talent Brady Rawlings said.

"The Tigers have a few tall options down back and in the ruck, so he's searching for an opportunity to play senior football.

Smart move by Nyuon. As mentioned North don't have a lot of tall options and will be in real strife if injuries hit their big men.
He really should be able to at least get an opportunity there to show what he has.

Ex-Tiger Will Thursfield (North's recruiting manager) got Biggie across to them.

---------

Nyuon says after that initial interest was floated, things began to ramp up after the season when former Tiger and current Kangaroos recruiting manager Will Thursfield sent him a text.

“Mid-year I sort of got an idea that North might have had an interest, through my manager Julian Petracca,” Nyoun said on AFL Trade Radio.

“We sort of just kept that in the back of our mind and the goal was just to sort of finish of the year off, finish really strong and try to put my best foot forward.

“Then eventually after the season finished, I ended up getting in touch with one of the great men in footy, Will Thursfield, who was also at Richmond and when I first got drafted.

“He chucked me a text and we just got the ball rolling. I came in, did an interview, just as any normal process would be and it kicked off from there.”

Thursfield joined North Melbourne from Richmond last off-season and there’s no surprise that Nyuon’s move followed him one year later.

Nyuon says his relationship with the former Tiger played a big part in his move as the now North Melbourne national recruiting manager has always been a big believer in his abilities.
