Title: 2024 Fixture
Post by: one-eyed on June 19, 2023, 03:50:27 PM
The second edition of Gather Round will be held in round four next season, after the AFL confirmed the dates for the annual event.

After the success of the inaugural Gather Round this year, the concept will return to South Australia in 2024, with all nine games of the round to be held in SA between Thursday, April 4 and Sunday, April 7.

"My message to footy fans across Australia is book your flights, book your accommodation and start planning your trip to South Australia because Gather Round 2024 promises to be even bigger than this year."

Book what exactly Andrew Dillon?

If you intend to go for the entire 4 days yeah you can book

If you only want to go to watch your own team you cannot book anything :help :banghead

Yes I could do that Frankie but then I'm up for the cost of changing flights

And as we all know with it being school holidays airlines (all of them) will price gouge

Report that the first 15 rounds will be locked in then the remainder later in the season will be a floating fixture. Thursday night games will continue to be a go as well.

The league is expected to again lock in the first 15 or so rounds of the schedule for clarity then have a floating component to maximise blockbusters in the back-end of the season.

My guess at the fixture so far from what we know:

R1 vs Gold Coast   Fri Mar 8         Heritage Bank Stadium   Away
R2 vs Carlton        Thurs Mar 14   MCG                              Away
R3                        Mar 21-24                                           Home (should be after two away games)
R4                        Mar 28-31                                                                .....(Easter - so not Haw/Geel)
R5                        Apr 4-7           Adelaide Oval                'Neutral/Away' .... (Gather Round)
R6                        Apr 11-14
R7                        Apr 18-21
R8 vs Melbourne    Apr 24            MCG                              Home ..... (Anzac Eve)
R9                        May 2-5
R10                      May 9-12
R11                      May 16-19
R12 vs Essendon   May 25            MCG                              Home  ..... (Dreamtime is usually in late May)

R13-15 .... A bye somewhere here.

R16-24 .... floating fixture.

-----

Fixture Brackets:

Top 6: Coll, Bris, Carl, GWS, Melb, Port.

Middle 6: StK, Syd, WB, Adel, Ess, Geel.

Bottom 6: Rich, Freo, GC, Haw, Norf, WCE.

From memory, us finishing bottom 6 means we only play one of the top 6 twice and no more than two of the middle 6 twice (?).

We didn't play the Suns nor Swans away this year, so I'm guessing we'll get both interstate in 2024. We know we've already got the Suns away first up.

Richmond to play St Kilda in 2024 Gather Round
By Richmond Media - 5 hrs ago

Richmond will play St Kilda at Norwood Oval in Round 4 of the 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The AFL announced the fixture for the 2024 version of Gather Round this morning, with the Tigers to face the Saints on Sunday, April 7 from 2.50pm local time.

Richmond and AFL members once again have free access to our match, a new family ticket will be introduced where kids go free, and a discounted multi-day pass will also be available. Full ticketing information for Gather Round will be released in the coming weeks.

Norwood Oval is a suburban oval in the western end of Norwood, Adelaide and is home to the Norwood Football Club - "The Redlegs" - who compete in the South Australian National Football League.

The Oval hosted GWS and Hawthorn as part of this year's Gather Round, with 9,057 people seeing the Giants win by two points.

Current Richmond senior club advisor Neil Balme coach Norwood to senior SANFL premierships in 1982 and 1984.

As a Thursday night footy flag flyer I am just a tad flat to hear Andrew Dillon say there will only be “around 2 or 3 extra ones” in the 2024 fixture. The ‘23 season had 11 and the attendances and ratings were largely excellent. Players & AFLPA were onboard. What am I missing?

We're going to have a bye within the first 8 rounds.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Four club and industry sources, who could not speak publicly because fixture plans were confidential, said the AFL intends to schedule a bye for each of the eight teams playing opening round in New South Wales and Queensland – the Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Collingwood, the Giants, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Richmond and Sydney – within the first eight rounds.

This would mean every team would have played the same number of games at that point of the season, with all clubs to also have their traditional mid-season bye.

Richmond head to Gold Coast for Opening Round

The AFL has revealed that Richmond will take on Gold Coast to open season 202

Richmond will head to the Gold Coast in the Opening Round of the 2024 season, as confirmed by the AFL this morning.

The Tigers are one of four Victorian teams to hit the road for the AFL's new Opening Round matches across Queensland and New South Wales, taking on the Suns at twilight on Saturday, March 9.

Richmond will then face Carlton in the traditional Round 1 fixture at the MCG on Thursday, March 14.

The eight teams that play in the Opening Round will then have a bye between Rounds 2 and 6, with all 18 teams in the competition having played the same number of games by the beginning of Round 7.

AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon said the AFL was presented with a unique opportunity to feature four matches ahead of the traditional start to the season.

“We were fortunate to be in a position where we were able to have access to our major venues in Queensland and New South Wales a weekend earlier than usual which gave us a unique opportunity to play these four games in key markets where footy continues to grow in popularity,” said Mr Dillon.

“The four match-ups are big, with four of our biggest supported Victorian clubs travelling north, and we look forward to starting our season with real momentum before we head into a blockbuster round of matches in Round 1.

“We continue to find opportunities to build marquee games and events across the season, with recent examples being King’s Birthday Eve, ANZAC Day Eve and Gather Round and our four matches in the Opening Round build on this approach.

“Given this weekend also falls on the Labour Day long weekend in Victoria it presents a terrific opportunity for fans to travel north to support their club and enjoy an extended interstate break.

“We are driven to have footy in every home around the country, whether that be playing, coaching, umpiring, supporting or volunteering and starting the season across Queensland and NSW will only amplify this desire.

“There’s a lot of people behind the scenes who helped bring this concept to life and I would like to thank our venues and the clubs for sharing in our Opening Round vision.”

The full 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership Season fixture will be released on Thursday 16 November.

Update guess of the fixture so far from what we know:

R1 vs Gold Coast   Sat Mar 9        Heritage Bank Stadium   Away
R2 vs Carlton        Thurs Mar 14   MCG                              Away ..... (5-day break after playing in the heat & humidity :thumbsdown )
R3                        Mar 21-24                                           Home ..... (should be after two away games)
R4                        Mar 28-31                                                                ..... (Easter - so not Haw/Geel)
R5 vs St Kilda        Apr    7           Norwood Oval                'Neutral/Away' .... (Gather Round)
R6                        Apr 11-14
R7 ..... Bye? .... would make sense given Anzac Eve is on a Wed & Melb need an early bye as well (although the AFL lack commonsense so it will probably be another 5-day break instead ::) )
R8 vs Melbourne    Apr 24            MCG                              Home ..... (Anzac Eve)
R9                        May 2-5
R10 vs Essendon    May 11           MCG                              Home  ..... (Dreamtime)

R11-15 .... A second bye somewhere here.

R16-24 .... floating fixture.

We're unlikely to finish high up the ladder anyway but not sure how you can finish in the bottom 6 of the ladder and then get three of the top 6 twice plus five finalists alongside two interstate trips in our first seven games  :help.

Of course, add the usual Marvel "home" game forced upon us that favours our opponents greatly ::).

Then add the trip down to little Sleepy Hollow when the other three Big 4 clubs play the Cats at the MCG.

No Friday night games either.

The AFL have done us no favours.

It’s also slightly strange to see bottom-six sides Fremantle and Richmond needing to play two top-six sides twice, as they fall victim to the AFL’s relaxation of the rules around how many members of each bracket each team plays. (When teams had five double-ups each, bottom six teams would play a maximum of one top six team, and vice versa.)

"Richmond have had a really strong fixture and strong performance run over a long period of time now. Ultimately, they've got what they've got. [If] they're performing well in the early part of the season, that will be reflected when we release the back part of the fixture."

The AFL have done us no favours.

I think we need to be honest here

We did ourselves no favours with our performances this year. Example: We had primetime against Brisbane at the Gabba and we put up one of the poorest performances of the year.

So our draw reflects that. I'm not surprised we have no Friday nights. Top 8 teams always get the marque timeslots. And our performances on Friday nights outside of the Geelong game were average

The new numpty at HQ in charge of fixturing is right first 15 rounds we play well and we will get decent slots in the run home

Be around the bottom 4 and we have no chance

“Ultimately they’ve got what they’ve got” has to be up there with the worst attempts at an explanation ever lol. Anyway not fussed, their ‘formula’ has always been stupid. Sometimes your on the right side of it and sometimes your on the wrong side of it.

I would have no issue with that reasoning WP, except the AFL doesn't apply that excuse to other clubs who have bored the public to death in primetime with their inept efforts for years and yet they still got rewarded with more Thursday/Friday nighters than us (i.e. hello 'done nothing for 20 years' Essendon).

I also think what that AFL numpty said "Ultimately, they’ve got what they’ve got" is a smartalec response. This is the second time in the past three years that the AFL has taken away our 'traditional' season opener despite it attracting massive crowds and TV audiences. Seems the AFL has forgotten last year's match ended in a draw in front of 88k. The AFL now expects us to prove ourselves worthy in primetime when our first primetime game next year will be off the back of a short 5-day break after playing in the middle of the day in the Qld heat & humidity. That's the first of five games in six weeks against last year's top 8 sides. So, unless Yze can suddenly and miraculously turn us back into a top side from the get go, then no doubt the AFL numpty will have a smug look on his face if our season is effectively over by Round 8.

Geelong is Geelong is a disgrace.

“Home” match v St Kilda at Marvel is a disgrace, should’ve been an interstate team.

15 matches to go to out of 23 and the price went up, disgrace. You can’t not say the Geelong match we can go to with their minimal tickets available.

4pm Sunday? twice?

Positives - last four matches in Melbourne

No NSW trip

Marvel matches back to back

3 Saturday Night Home matches

Playing Geelong at their piece of steaming dump of a ground simply cannot be justified.
2021 - 54800
2022 - 59300
2023 - 58100

vs Bombers
2021 - 15,500 (at steaming dumpster)
2023 -  23,200 (same venue)

They had a 54,500 crowd at G

So, this piece of crap oval is costing afl 30,000 fans each time they play there.
Don’t tell it’s because the stand is getting build - who the hell wants to go to the cattery?

Geelong are going to be rubbish next year so their fans won’t go either.

Does that mean the AFL will move their games to Punt Rd as a penalty for not being any good?

Why do they keep saying we got two of the top 6?
Does it include finals as opposed to ladder positions?

Eg St Kilda

Regardless , we were stiff in who we drew for twice in the other bottom 5

West Coast, nup, plus the game against them is away
North, nup

Gave us the other 3.

Then we should have got two in middle bracket.
Nup, give us one and it’s the team that actually finished top bracket before finals.

One in the top bracket.
Nup, gave us two.

What a joke

Club-by-club AFL fixture report card: Who cashed in, who got dudded in 2024 draw

Max Laughton and Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
November 17th, 2023

RICHMOND

Games played against...

Top eight: 11

Top four: 5

Bottom 10: 12

Bottom four: 6

Who they play twice: Carlton, Fremantle, Gold Coast Suns, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, St Kilda

Bye weeks: Round 6, Round 15

Average percentage of double-up opponents: 100.4% (sixth-easiest)

Analysis:

Not as much primetime love for the Tigers to start the season. The only other primetime slot besides the traditional Round 1 Thursday clash against Carlton is a trip to Adelaide to face the Crows. However that doesn’t include the traditional Anzac Eve clash against Melbourne, which next year lands on a Wednesday night. The Tigers also have two five-day breaks early in the year: Between Opening Round and Round 1 then between Rounds 12 and 13. They’ll also host a match at Marvel Stadium – against Marvel Stadium tenants St Kilda – in Round 22, while they’ll travel to GMHBA Stadium to face Geelong for premiership points for the first time since 2017. Then there’s three trips to Adelaide (including Gather Round), two to Perth and two to Queensland. On the bright side, they have two hat-tricks of MCG clashes (Round 1-3 and 7-9) early in the year before five straight games in Melbourne to end the season – and three of those games are against bottom-four teams from 2023.

Yeah, they do. So, while the Saints finished sixth at the end of the H/A season, because they lost to GWS in the Elim Final, they dropped down to 7th overall.

Long bow to draw there Mr OE  :lol

What I found interesting was the software is used by the EPL, MLB, NHL, NFL to name a few and it seems to work without the apparent bias that we get in the AFL.

That to me points to the HQ putting in the scenarios they want and getting the rest of the draw spat out by the software around it; while adhering to the CBA player requirements

It's comical

EPL - everyone plays each other twice (home & away) and each club has its own home ground. What the old VFL was like before ground rationalisation and nationalisation of the competition itself. No finals/play-offs either by the way in European soccer leagues.

American comps - teams are placed in conferences and divisions. So, the rival match-ups in each division are already set in place rather than having to fudge the fixture as the AFL does. IIRC, in the NFL, divisional rivals play each other twice (home & away) while the remaining 11 regular season games are played against teams outside your division once. So, you don't play against every franchise each year, and divisional rivals are competing directly against each other for top divisional spot which qualifies you for the play-offs rather than having one big ladder of 32 NFL teams.

I know many footy fans would hate adopting another Americanism, but if you wanted a fairer fixture, then with a Tassie team plus eventually a 20th side coming into the comp, you could split the league into four 5-club divisions where you play each divisional rival twice and the rest once (23 games).

Vic MCG: Rich, Carl, Coll, Ess, Melb .... Season opener, Anzac Eve/Day, Dreamtime, King's Birthday, Old school Big 4 rivalries.
Vic Docklands: Geel, Haw, WB, StK, Norf
North-East Aus: Bris, GC, Syd, GWS, Tassie.
South-West Aus: Adel, Port, WCE, Freo, 3rd WA side.

I say this every season the starting point and fairest way to set up the AFL draw when teams don't play one and another twice is to make sure in the first 17 rounds all teams play each other once, then you worry who plays who a 2nd time.

It is a joke that we don't play say the Pies until what is it round 20?

Same thing happened this year not playing certain sides until the final month of the season

I get it will always be compromised but at a minimum have each side play each once straight up

Agree WP but the AFL will say it gives them more flexibility regarding scheduling.

It is a joke that we don't play say the Pies until what is it round 20?
Depending on how we go next year, that may end up a blessing in disguise given where both clubs are in their cycles - reigning premiers vs rebuilding mode  :-\. It sure was painful in 2010-11 sitting through Pies games :P.

Five clashes at the MCG, two at Marvel Stadium, and trips to Perth and Adelaide await the Tigers in the final stretch of the season, made up of Saturday and Sunday timeslots.
