Tigers' known weapon for Dees clash, duo set to return
Adem Yze knows the Dees well as his Tigers prepare for the Anzac Day Eve blockbuster
By AAP
22 April 2024
COACH Adem Yze is serving as injury-hit Richmond's not-so-secret weapon as it plots an upset of flag contender Melbourne, midfielder Jack Graham says.
Yze has an intimate knowledge of the Demons, having spent three seasons as an assistant to Simon Goodwin, including in the drought-breaking 2021 premiership campaign, before taking over as Damien Hardwick's full-time successor at Punt Road this season.
The 46-year-old's familiarity with Melbourne's playing list and game style has been crucial in Richmond's preparation for Wednesday night's match at the MCG as it seeks to improve on a 1-5 start to the season.
Graham says Yze has spoken to the Tigers about Melbourne's ball movement, "what they want to do at stoppages" and "how they'll flip with certain players".
"He's given us a good insight on how we're going to tackle that," Graham told reporters.
Richmond has a long list of key players on the sidelines, including Tim Taranto, Tom Lynch, Josh Gibcus, Noah Balta and Dion Prestia.
But it expects some relief when midfielder Jacob Hopper (knee) and veteran defender Dylan Grimes (wrist) return from injuries against Melbourne.
"They both trained today and looked good, so hopefully they pull up all right," Graham said.
"I'm pretty sure they'll put their hands up for selection."
The Tigers will start rank outsiders against a Melbourne outfit that had won four straight games before a last-start loss to Brisbane.
"I definitely back us in to be competitive. That's what we base our game on – pressure," Graham said.
"Yeah, we'd love some boys out there that aren't, but it gives opportunities for our younger boys to step up and own that."
After a tough start to the season, Richmond has enjoyed a 10-day break during its bye week to rest and reset following a horror round five loss away to West Coast.
"The extra couple of days gives your body a bit of a rest and hopefully we get a few boys back (soon)," Graham said.
"Injuries haven't been on our side but it's come at a good time to refresh and go again."
Graham had a delayed start to the season due to a quad injury but has built into the campaign, averaging 17.5 disposals and 7.5 tackles in his two games back.

No from me for Grimes coming in.
-
Big big mistake selecting Grimes... Seems the vision at punt road is very short sighted
-
Fear an absolute thrashing from the demons given the team selections
-
Fear an absolute thrashing from the demons given the team selections
If it's the only way to wake the football department the stuff up then I welcome it...... :shh
-
From Yze's presser today:
"We've worked on a lot of stoppage, we weren't happy with the way that we performed around stoppage and clearance (against West Coast) - we got smashed in that area.
"We've done a lot of work with our midfielders and so hopefully that comes out. But it is going to be a massive part of the game."

-
Young gonna get 5 kicked on him
-
Missed handball in the centre to start :facepalm gifts Melbourne an easy clearance and the first goal :P.
-
Clear free to Baker for too high not paid. And they wonder why we complain about the umps as Tiger supporters ::).
-
Young gonna get 5 kicked on him
Sharp so far.
If it happens it's probably not his fault.
Gonna get smashed all night in the midfield.
-
Maurice held without the ball= no free ::).
Bad miss by Dusty. No momentum in the kick.
-
Dumb predictable kicks in50 but our forwards have to at least make an effort to contest.
-
New tactic, don’t contest the mark inside 50.
-
Wtf was hrs doing there ?
-
New tactic, don’t contest the mark inside 50.
:lol :rollin
-
Wtf was hrs doing there ?
Left the dangerous player inside 50 to man up the not dangerous player outside 50.
-
Maurice should have kicked that as well once he was clear.
12 inside 50s for just two points :P.
-
Imagine a game where we hit our handball targets FMD
-
A team of dumb dumbs :help
-
Finally!
Lefau goal :gotigers
Rich 1.3-9
Melb 1.3-9
-
Getting better every week.
-
Grimes runs at opponent without looking at the ball and puts his arm on him… how dumb
-
Dumb handball by Nank to Hopper.
And we give away another soft late red time goal :banghead.
-
Pickett dumb, will miss atleast a week and he deserves it. Don’t want him back in the team
-
Pickett dumb, will miss atleast a week and he deserves it. Don’t want him back in the team
Don't mind it myself haha
-
Thought it was pretty soft to be honest, Oliver is a degenerate!
-
Lucky we didn't give away another. Siren saved us.
Quarter time
Richmond 1.3-9
Melbourne 2.3-15
Goal: Lefau
That was a quarter of wasting a heap of forward entries. Without Lynch we are clueless going inside 50. We keep kicking it in there as though Tiger Tom is out there.
-
Pickett scumbag, will miss atleast a week and he deserves it. Don’t want him back in the team
Wgaf about what he did. Oliver deserved it.. and then big wanna be tough Viney wanted a piece and Pickett owned him.
OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IS GRIMES. HE WILL COST US THE GAME . HE ALREADY ALONE HAS GIFTED 2 GOALS TO MELBOURNE. I BEVER WANNA SEE THIS HAS BEEN IN THE TEAM AGAIN. HE IS COOKED AND FINISHED
-
Boys are having a dip at least.
Happy with Hopper, Young, Brown, Dow even.
-
Thought it was pretty soft to be honest, Oliver is a degenerate!
Spot on it was open hand. Oliver is a cheat and all this love for him make me sick
-
17 inside 50s for one goal. Going at just 29% inside F50.
-
Hopper 42% efficiency
-
That was a gift to us. Lefau gifted possession in the middle by the Dees and he finds Dusty. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 2.3-15
Melb 2.3-15
-
Two handed push in the back and none of the 4 fluro muppets could see it ::).
-
Hopper 42% efficiency
He’s been great at the contest and had a massive dip
Would love to see what would happen if his body held up
-
Obviously can’t fault
Hopper for having a crack, first of all let’s see it for a full game and secondly the problem with him
And the whole team is that the disposal is useless
-
That was the same as Dusty's HTB but we don't get it ::).
-
Should have been htb twice MT
-
Both Miller and young have a really bad habit of losing the ball in the air because they’re watching their opponent
-
Really poor kick by Floss into forwardline
-
Maurice goal :gotigers
Rich 3.5-23
Melb 3.5-23
-
We are making Melbourne look average without actually doing anything spectacular.
-
Thomson Dow is managing to make HRS look like a cross between Francis Bourke and Jack Dyer
-
Grimes a captains point……………… :help
-
Grimesy the forward :snidegrin
Shot after the siren.
Kicked it like a defender :-\.
First time in front tonight.
Half-time
Richmond 1.3 3.6-24
Melbourne 2.3 3.5-23
Goals: Lefau, Martin, M.Rioli
-
Grimes a captains point……………… :help
No co-captains this year thankfully. Nank's the sole captain.
-
Hopper 42% efficiency
He is having a crack and our clearance work has improved heaps thanks to him. Most of his kicks have been under extreme pressure
-
Maurice Rioli is shutting many critics up. He's been our best player thus far.
-
So much negative bulltish in this thread. Fair dinkum. We've been sensational given we have the 18th best forward line in the comp, and prolly the 17th best midfield. Love it when the whipping boys are going well too, makes a lot on here uncomfortable. MJR WILL be a player and is starting to actually dominate opponents. Pickett good, HRS good, Banks good etc etc. We may get overrun in the 2nd half, but the green shoots are there if you want to see them. Plenty don't want to tho.
-
Individual disposals to HT:
Hopper 17
Broad 12
Nank 12
Brown 11
Dusty 11
Floss 11

Disposals 200 - 186 ..... ( contested: 58 - 63 )

Marks 67 - 57
Clearances 12 - 16

Tackles 32 - 28

Spot on. If it weren't for Grimes we would be 2 goals up. But the score is irrelevant for me ATM. It's the green shoots. Waiting for the moment Maurice Rioli truly believes in himself and he belongs. He is showing great signs . His destiny is in his hands
-
Very impressive half by MRJ both with and without the ball.
-
Finally!
Lefau goal :gotigers
Rich 1.3-9
Melb 1.3-9
Graham burnt him something shocking right before this goal
-
I feel like they’ll open us a bit in the second half but I’ve liked our intensity so far.
-
Probably dows best game for the club so far
-
Lever dives and the fluro muppets fell for it ::).
-
Pathetic Tiges. Slow high ball to the goal-line and no one can jump and punch it through :facepalm.
-
Unacceptable- we’ve got 4 key defenders and not one of the pricks punch it through
-
Nankervis very very average there. pee poor effort and even worse positioning as the loose defender.
-
F me Nank is poo
-
Probably dows best game for the club so far
Yep
Has only shat himself twice and refused to help his teammates defensively multiple other times
Genuine improvement
-
Flood gates
-
Nank cost is 2 goals cause he can’t stuffen punch
-
Had every Tiger run past Baker when someone had to remain defensive side of the contest. Dees just ran it out the front for an easy goal.
-
Young is struggling to stop anyone especially the youngsters.
Poor man's Thursfield
-
lol Jack Graham
-
What's the too cute dinky little possies now? Just coughing up the ball.
-
Oliver is giving Hopper a bath. Who is now stuffed
-
Hopper injured :help
-
Again
-
All over the shop this qtr. We look out of juice and making mistakes galore.
-
And in the blink of an eye, they’ve doubled our score. :banghead
-
Just got home and started watching.
What I'm seeing is embarrassing
-
We get out the back and Maurice goals :gotigers
Rich 4.6-30
Melb 7.7-49
-
Pressure and defensive run is goooooone!
-
Pressure and defensive run is goooooone!
Can’t possibly be fit
We just run out of gas every week
-
Hopper injured again, looks peeed off so same injury I guess. Another great job by the medical team ! Seriously getting stuffing ridiculous. Hopper, whether it’s his fault or not, has been a catastrophic trade
-
Hopper injured again, looks peeed off so same injury I guess. Another great job by the medical team ! Seriously getting stuffing ridiculous. Hopper, whether it’s his fault or not, has been a catastrophic trade
Yep
Body has failed badly
The saddest thing is it’s obv he can genuinely play
-
Miller should have killed that guy on the flank, guy was a sitting duck!
Lacks mongrel.
-
Kmac subbed on for Hopper (hammy).
-
Bit depressing when your sub is a washed up wingmen
-
Nothing like using a defensive wingman as the sub in a tight game. Match committee nailed that one!
-
Miller should have killed that guy on the flank, guy was a sitting duck!
Lacks mongrel.
lol
😂
You serious?
Did you see what Greene and Baker got a week for?
Fart in the direction of an opponent and you cop weeks these days
-
This bloke cannot be our captain!!!!!!!!!!
-
Way to go Skipper.
-
Nothing like the stupidest kick in history to hand back momentum :banghead
-
Really poor from the captain in the last minute. First the careless free and then the slow kick across goal with 30 secs to play :help.
-
We aren’t a skilled enough team to play the way yze is trying to make us play imo. Lots of average ball users every where you look on this team
-
Captains game from the Nank :help
The most unqualified captain ever? :rollin
-
And there we saw exactly why NANK SHOULD NEVER BE CAPTAIN . HE IS SUCH A STUPID FOOTBALLER. FROM NOW ON WE MUST ONLY CONTRACT PLAYERS WHO PASS AN IQ TEST. FFS HE IS SO FCKING STUPID
-
You can’t win matches of football kicking 4 goals in 3 quarters …
-
Shocker from Nank. We did well too halt the momentum and then that happens. :rollin
Can't fault our effort and pressure, really lacking some polish up forward.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 1.3 3.6 4.8-32
Melbourne 2.3 3.5 8.7-55
Goals: M.Rioli 2, Lefau, Martin.
Fought back in general play in the latter half of the qtr but our lack of polish and class hurts us both ways.
-
Captains game from the Nank :help
The most unqualified captain ever? :rollin
A pile of dog poo would be more useful than Nank tonight. Worst game ever.
-
Reality is our team slid fast because firstly we chose 2 captains that ARE NOT LEADERS NOR CAPTAINS , and secondly they kept 1, and the MOST STUPID ONE ... FCKING HAD ENOUGH OF ALL THE HAS BEENS. NANK HAS TO BE DROPPED. TIME TO PLAY RYAN AND NAISMITH HIS BACK UP. GRIMES AND NANK HAVE COST US THIS GAME
-
And there we saw exactly why NANK SHOULD NEVER BE CAPTAIN . HE IS SUCH A STUPID FOOTBALLER. FROM NOW ON WE MUST ONLY CONTRACT PLAYERS WHO PASS AN IQ TEST. FFS HE IS SO FCKING STUPID
You accidentally hit the caps lock key.
-
:rollinNank gave away an undisciplined free kick only 20 seconds earlier- he’s actively working against us . Bloody awful.
-
Miller should have killed that guy on the flank, guy was a sitting duck!
Lacks mongrel.
lol
😂
You serious?
Yes, I am. My point is he could have driven into the tackle through the ribs. Instead he slowed up and tried to grab him. As a result, he missed the tackle.
Did you see what Greene and Baker got a week for?
Fart in the direction of an opponent and you cop weeks these days
-
Bolton goal :gotigers
Rich 5.9-39
Melb 8.7-55

That's BS. Lefau had already knocked the ball out and then May went over the top.

I thought they fixed this rule?
-
Is Martin out there?
-
Love Bakes
But if we can get pick 6 for a hobbit, we really need to take it

That's BS. Lefau had already knocked the ball out and then May went over the top.

They haven’t fixed any rules , all the stuffers have done is stuffed our game up royally
-
The umps decisions really affecting this game now
-
That's BS. Lefau had already knocked the ball out and then May went over the top.
Modern football doesn’t reward the bloke who gets to the ball first
That rule is meant to stop sliding into the legs of an opponent who is going for the ball. Not reward someone flopping over the top after the event.
The fluros up to their usual pathetic standard :thumbsdown.
-
I've loved hearing the word "stand" 100 times this quarter.
-
Gotta feel for Ooze. Who knows, maybe if we didn’t have all these injuries we would have 3 or 4 wins. But we’d only be kidding ourselves coz we are no good anyway. Makes it hard to support this team when Sonsie and mcc aren’t getting a game over kmac, Pickett, Graham.
I think this next off season will bring a lot of change, but it takes years and years to build a team, so we are in for some pain for a long time lads.
-
That’s the softest goal we’ve allowed for the night
-
Time for mansell to have a spell in the vfl too with Campbell on high alert
-
Frees 12 - 23
5 - 15 since half-time.
-
This is the stuff that annoys me more than anything. The wheels fall off and the discipline goes out the window. Stupid stupid free kicks.
-
Im calling atleast 8 years until we could compete for a flag again and I couldn’t say for certain that any player on this list will still be here
-
Frees 12 - 23
5 - 15 since half-time.
Disgusting isn't it
-
Our goalkicking was woeful tonight. I can handle losing because we are outclassed, but we should at least should do the basics like take most of our set shots which are under no physical pressure. Our ressies kicked 15.5 today yet the seniors kick 5.12.
-
Im calling atleast 8 years until we could compete for a flag again
That’s the optimistic post you’ve made for a long time
-

Haha well I consider myself a realist. I was always optimistic from 2014-2021. The writing is just on the wall here as clear as day
-

Our score resembles the free kick count
-
Final score
Richmond 1.3 3.6 4.8 5.12-42
Melbourne 2.3 3.5 8.7 13.7-85
Goals: M.Rioli 2, Lefau, Martin, Bolton.
8.2 to 2.6 after half-time and 5.0 to 1.4 in the last qtr which blew out the score. The bad kicking is bad footy cliche on show.
Expect Yze to point to the 15 minute lapse after half-time which gave the Dees a 4 goal lead. The rest of the game we tried but we lacked polish and lacked talls up forward. it was 50 inside 50s each but you can't win games kicking just 1 goal for every 10 F50 entries :P.
-
Well we were in it for a while.
Some positives
-
Would have been worse if not for Pickett……….apparently
-
As much as Nank had a stinker, Naismith gives us a fat 0. The non-selection of Ryan as a key forward was a glaring error, especially against this mob.
-
Cue the “Richmond doesn’t deserve the Anzac eve match” calls from Cornes and co
-
Beaten by a side we should have been beaten by.
Nothing surprising other than how close it was in until the 3rd.
Gotta say I'm starting to like Lefau more and more each week. Has been standing some pretty decent Backmen and has done very well considering he's played single.digit games. We are getting reamed with injuries but it's opening up some Gametime for guys who need it, and we should not be playing guys who will not be part of the next competitive generation. It's past the time to think of the now and look to the future.
-
16 scoring shots from 50 forward entries is damning stat
-
Meh , about what I expected. They had a dip . I enjoyed the first half . The umpires killed us .
Dow was better , Lefau is great to watch and MRJ continues to improve.
The downside was our captain.
-
Dow kept handballing to people under pressure, he needs work on his choices. Maybe there weren't better options as I was watching the TV so you don't see the whole park.
-
Good signs from the kids it was brain fades and poor decisions from our senior core. Playing Graham, Macca ,Pickett and Grimes is getting us no we're rather get kids in get them experience. Ryan infor Naismith no brainer. Sonsie in the guts with McAuliffe and Smith and Coulthard to.
-
Hard to watch the skill errors tonight but they had a dip for at least 3 qtrs.
That being said, I've always loved Graham (yes I know he isn't a fan favourite here) but I think it's time to send him back to Adelaide. Taking a young players spot. Ie Sonsie.
Better luck next week.
-

RFC supporters have given up. MFC are fake anyway.
You can tell it was going to be a low number, when you can walk into the ground relatively quickly.

GRADING EVERY PLAYER AS DEES TAKE CARE OF TIGERS IN ANZAC EVE CLASH
By Lachlan Geleit
SEN
25 April 2024
Our player ratings:
Richmond
Maurice Rioli Jr: B+
Was very good, particularly in the first three quarters as a deep forward. Kicked a couple of goals.
Thomson Dow: B+
Perhaps his best game at AFL level? Showed some real signs of class and composure and finished with 22 disposals and eight tackles.
Nick Vlastuin: B+
Continued his quality season and finished with a typical seven-mark, 20-disposal stat-line.
Liam Baker: B+
Jacob Hopper: B+
Was subbed out late in the third term with a hamstring injury but was probably the best on-baller on the ground before that. Finished with 23 disposals.
Shai Bolton: B
Kicked a goal and had 18 touches but really could have done a lot more. This grade might be harsh, but he is capable of much more.
Toby Nankervis: B
Battled well and can hold his head up high against Max Gawn.
Ben Miller: B
Completely shut down Petty and was strong aerially all game.
Hugo Ralphsmith: B
A quality game from the young outside runner. Finished with 21 disposals and did well to go head-to-head with Ed Langdon all night.
Tylar Young: B
Did well in key defence playing primarily on Jacob Van Rooyen.
Nathan Broad: B-
Daniel Rioli: B-
Finished with 23 disposals.
Marlion Pickett: B-
Didn’t do a lot offensively but played an important role in limiting Christian Petracca’s influence whenever the ball went away from the contest.
Dustin Martin: B-
Kicked an early goal and had 18 disposals but didn’t have a big impact.
Tom Brown: C+
Mykelti Lefau: C+
Was beaten too often but still showed some nice signs as an emerging forward.
Sam Naismith: C
Dylan Grimes: C
Sam Banks: C
Jack Graham: C-
Rhyan Mansell: C-
Seth Campbell: D
Kamdyn McIntosh: N/A
Started as the sub for just the fourth time in his career and came on for Jacob Hopper in the fourth term.

C for Grimes generous as was the C+ for Brown who's kicking deserted him and was Fritsch's bitch ...B's for Miller & Young but only a a C+ for Lefau clearly a pisstake....and I see they're also running with the "Pickett shutdown Fatracca" malarkey.... :shh

Richmond just needs a little polish
The Tigers are doing it tough when it comes to player availability, lacking both Tom Lynch and Noah Balta in attack, as well as experienced trio Tim Taranto, Dion Prestia and Jayden Short higher up the ground. Despite this, they were able to shut down the Demons for a half of football on Wednesday night off the back of pure effort and intensity. Where the game was ultimately lost, however, was an inability to make the most of their forays forward, with the Tigers kicking just five goals from 17 scoring shots and finishing square for inside 50s. Finding some polish ahead of the footy, whether that be through the return of star players or the growth of youngsters thrown into the deep end covering others' absences, will turn Richmond from a battling team into a genuine threat each week.

RICHMOND
It started promisingly for Richmond fans — albeit in ugly fashion — but ultimately Melbourne pulled away to run away with a 43-point win. The Tigers’ run and gun game had the Demons rattled across the first two quarters, helping them to a one-point lead at the major break. But the Demons showed their class and professionalism in the second half to kick 10 of the last 12 goals of the game, with the Tigers bereft on answers. The loss came at a cost for the already injury-depleted Tigers, with star midfielder Jacob Hopper — who was laying for the first time since Round 2 — subbed out of the game with a hamstring injury.
In the votes
Liam Baker was excellent for Richmond, finishing with 22 disposals and six score involvements. Maurice Rioli Jnr’s pressure was electric, while Hugo Ralphsmith played arguably the best match of his career with a personal-best 21 disposals on a wing against premiership star Ed Langdon.
Room for improvement
The Tigers controlled the territory in the first quarter, winning the inside 50 count 17-11. But they didn’t break through for their first goal until late in the quarter. Their pressure game — which rattled Sydney several weeks ago — was also on display early, but they simply couldn’t maintain it for four quarters. Individually, Jack Graham was a little quiet, while Dylan Grimes looked a touch shaky in his return game. Also Mykelti Lefau’s impressive efforts in the ruck might make it tough for Sam Naismith to hold his spot.
