India next in AFL expansion plans
Mark Hawthorne | August 19, 2008
THE AFL will push further into overseas markets by playing two exhibition matches in India in early March, in addition to the scheduled Collingwood-West Coast game in South Africa.
Feroz Shah Kotla cricket ground in New Delhi and Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai have been selected as the two preferred arena by the AFL. Both have a capacity of about 40,000. The AFL also has plans to play a further exhibition match in Miami.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has ruled out his club's involvement in an Indian match due to the existing South African commitment, but Richmond, Essendon and North Melbourne have been lobbying hard to be involved in the first games to be played in India.
Richmond invited Sujatha Singh, the Indian high commissioner to Australia, to a recent match against Essendon. Anita Nayar, India's Consul General in Melbourne, has also attended two Tigers' games this season.
"No decision has been made about the teams yet, but we are very keen to go and be one of the clubs involved in the first AFL match played over there," Richmond president Gary March said.
"It's a great opportunity. There are growing cultural and population ties between India and Australia. The Tigers, being a revered animal in that country, would be a perfect fit for the Indian market."
Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson confirmed that the club has been involved in negotiations for months to play in India.
"It's no secret we would love to go," Jackson said. "It's a tremendous opportunity, and would fit right in with our club's history of developing the game with different cultures and communities. We would even make a financial contribution to meet some of the costs if required."
AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said an announcement on next year's overseas schedule was "imminent", but it was too early to confirm whether the matches in India would go ahead. "We hope to have an announcement in four-to-six weeks," he said.
"But we are not in a position to say anything further at this stage as we are in a number of negotiations."
The AFL has enlisted the help of Federal Government agency Austrade and Melbourne-based Stride Sports Management, a company co-owned by Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting, to guide and promote its push into the Indian market.
Austrade's recently appointed New Delhi commissioner, Peter Linford, has been dealing with the AFL for several months to help with the logistics of playing two matches in India.
Linford was based in Melbourne until late last month, when he relocated to New Delhi.
The AFL wants to capitalise on the profile of Ponting to assist its push into India.
In May, Ponting was the special guest at an AFL function in Kolkata that promoted Australian football to Indian business leaders and the media.
Ponting is an ardent North Melbourne fan who has publicly stated his desire to join the board of the football club.
The involvement of Stride further strengthens North Melbourne's chances of playing in India — former Kangaroos players Glenn Archer, Anthony Stevens and Keith McKenzie are all part of the Stride management team.
Representatives of both Taj Hotels Group, an Indian-owned luxury hotel chain, and Austrade confirmed that provisional hotel bookings have been made by the AFL for New Delhi and Mumbai in early March. That means the matches could be part of the NAB Cup pre-season series.
"There are still some negotiations to be done over the dates," said a spokesman for Taj Hotels.
February is peak tourist season in India — New Delhi and Mumbai are the two main arrival points for overseas tourists.
Including players and officials, the AFL needs between 60 and 80 rooms in both cities.
If the later March dates are to go ahead, the AFL would limit the commitments of the clubs involved so they could fly in, play their games, and then return to Australia.
Last February, Collingwood spent almost two weeks in Dubai promoting the game. Jackson would prefer the matches were part of the NAB Cup series. "If you are going to showcase the sport overseas, then it's best to be serious about it and play games that mean something and make an impression," he said.

It's bad enough at times playing cricket in India with the high temperatures they can get over there. Imagine running around playing footy for 2 hours :P. A big risk knocking the body around with heat, humidity and travel 2-3 weeks before the start of real stuff.
The beginning of March sees night temperatures reach 15 °C. The days reach 30 to 33 °C. During the transition from the dry to humid weather in mid March, the temperature might hit 38 to 40 °C. This high however, is due to hot dry winds from Gujarat. By mid March the temperatures hit 37 °C, with the lows at 18 °C. Humidity is unbearable, and smog affects the city. New leaves sprout from decidous trees.

Yes MT,
And from my experience, you can't brush your teeth with the water, let alone think about drinking it, even if it has been boiled first. Boiling doesn't get rid of the heavy metals. Even worse, if you inhale the steam from the shower, you can expect to catch some nasty bugs.
You shouldn't eat anything that is not cooked, no fresh fruit or vegies, and anything that you can eat has to be laden with spices to make sure that the bugs are dead and your innards are properly cleaned out pretty soon after the meal.
Wouldn't have thought that it would be a great place to take a football team at any time, let alone just prior to the season.

Benny Gale was at the Comm Games in Delhi with the AFL's Tony Woods investigating playing an exhibition game in India next year.
AFL game for Indian assault
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
October 23, 2010
DELHI'S controversy-plagued Commonwealth Games have not deterred the AFL, which is investigating playing an exhibition game in India next year.
The league is buoyed by last week's Melbourne-Brisbane game in Shanghai, which resulted in a new Chinese TV deal to broadcast the code next year.
AFL international game development manager Tony Woods and Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale were in Delhi during the Games.
They met Austrade's Senior Trade Commissioner in New Delhi, Peter Linford, with the Australian government pushing the idea of a game in a big Indian city.
India appeals to the AFL because of the availability of cricket ovals for games, and massive population of sports-mad people. A game in India would not only push the AFL's brand, but promote trade.
The league also hopes to play a game in South Africa in coming years, and will spend the next few months reviewing its plans for future international games.
Less than $1 million of AFL funds a year is spent on international development, compared with $80 million in Australia.

never mind, there'll be some sort of option in our membership to reserve a seat at the game!
-
Uh.. it wouldn't be as a H&A match guys. It would be an exhibition match.
-
maybe this could lead to some large sponsorship deals as well.
-
yeah, well, convince some of the sponsors that plunder the IPL and you never know :shh
-
Plenty of Tigers in India, big ones
-
Dilmah Tea ::)
-
Bookmakers?
-
highely doubt we would play there ... probz be like sydney and dogs
-
What a shame RFC doesn't sink low enough to deliberately loose matches.
Get in bed with Gupta over there and we could pay of our debt in one foul swoop. :outtahere

LOL al.
The Comm Games' mascot was a tiger.

An exhibition game would be played in the cooler months between December to February.
DLF is the sponsor of the IPL. You'd chase Indian companies who would be keen to expand into the Australian marketplace.
Benny going for 1,000,075,000 members ;D
Dilmah Tea ::)
Dilmah is Sri Lankan not Indian :wallywink
-
Dilmah, same difference

Funny as it is MT, I'm loving the thinking behind it all. Some clubs are wanting to make inroads into China & South Africa. Why not India?
If the pies can have pre-season in America, why can't we have a pre-season on the sub-continent - you better believe they have altitude training there (not sure how many AFL grounds are half-way up the Himalayas but I'm sure we can do hill sprints ;D, plus give your rookies and 1st/2nd year players some match experience.
They love Tigers over there & they're addicted to sport so it's a perfect fit. 10-15 years time it might pay dividends - stroke of, well... good common sense really.
Oh, and by the way Jack it's "werry, werry good" ;)

Located at an altitude of 7,500 feet above sea-level, the Chail cricket ground in Himachal Pradesh is described to be the highest cricket ground in the world.

Lucky Travis Cloke isn't playing there or it'd be a bugger fetching the footy after it was kicked out on the full lol.
-
did Grenville Dietrich stand on the left hand side of the ground or something.
-
Looks like the ground has its own helipad for Full-forwards to land at just in time for the first bounce.
-
Perfect!
Looks like it'll build character too. The modern AFL player is just a smidge too soft for my liking.

Dilmah Tea ::)
ahahahahahaha that's Sri Lankan. :lol :rollin :lol

Tigers, Bombers plan India match
Bruce Matthews
From: Herald Sun
April 20, 2011
RICHMOND and Essendon are working together on a plan to play a pre-season game in India.
The match would be a joint promotion for the code and trade links between the two countries, it was reported today.
It's believed the Australian Trade Commission in New Dehli is preparing a detailed bid to stage the match early next year.
Tigers' chief executive Brendon Gale and AFL international game development manager Tony Woods met a senior trade commission official during last year's Commonwealth Games.
Mumbai would be the preferred location with two cricket stadiums capable of being reconfigured for a football match.
And it's understood several Australian and Indian companies have informally agreed to become involved as sponsors once the Tigers-Bombers match was officially sanctioned by the AFL.

Bombers, Tigers in Mumbai?
Jon Pierik
April 20, 2011
THE AFL could have a presence in one of the world's biggest markets if a pre-season match between Essendon and Richmond in India is given the go-ahead.
Austrade's Senior Trade Commissioner in New Delhi, Peter Linford, is finalising a detailed bid to stage a match early next year which will not only promote the AFL but also trade links between the countries.
It's understood Linford is keen for the match to be staged as part of the NAB Cup, but it could yet be an exhibition game.
AFL international game development manager Tony Woods and Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale were in Delhi during last year's Commonwealth Games and met Linford.
It has since emerged the Bombers are keen to partner the Tigers, with Mumbai understood to be the preferred city to host the match.
Richmond general manager of media and stakeholder relations, Simon Matthews, yesterday said discussions were continuing.
''Both clubs are still keen but that has been the case for a little while. We are exploring it and would like to see it happen, so that's what it boils down to,'' he said.
''The trick is how we make it work commercially and what sits around that game.''
Essendon did not wish to comment.
Ground availability would not be a problem in Mumbai with two major cricket grounds to choose from, including Wankhede Stadium, which hosted the final of cricket's World Cup.
Ground officials have expressed interest in staging the match, provided it does not affect local cricket or the national side.
It's understood several Indian and Australian companies have been contacted to help sponsor the match, with several informally agreeing to do so once the match is sanctioned.
There also remains interest in Melbourne and Brisbane Lions contesting another game in Shanghai, while a clash between Collingwood and West Coast in South Africa has not been ruled out.
The Magpies and Eagles had been due to play at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town in February 2009 but the match was cancelled because of the global financial crisis.

Great idea, been saying it for the last 5 years.
1- why are RFC commenting and EFC not?
2- don't think a side called the "bombers" should be considered for a game in India... :whistle
-
2- don't think a side called the "bombers" should be considered for a game in India... :whistle
After the Commonwealth Games fiasco, I'd be reluctant to conduct any sporting event in India. Mind you in India crowd attendance won't be problem as you'd get thousands to the opening of a lunch box.
-
I tell you what, I wouldnt be happy if it was as late as two weeks before the season real started, imagine half the team comming back with stomach problems and jet lagg. It would have to be either before the NAB cup or the first round.
-

;D
-
what a total waste of time
the club would be purely focussed in winning a flag and playing finals footy
-
So long as there's some sort of financial benefit for the club in playing a match over in India, I guess it could be a good thing.
-

well hate to tell you, it is, what would the benefits be ???? You tell me,
-
it would be a waste of time to tell you ;)
-
can just see it now, the Indian overseas call centre being a major sponsor.
All we will have is continual harrassment from the Indians with after hours phone calls, please.
Totally disruption to a pre season
-
it would be a waste of time to tell you ;)
have the Indians following the tiges.
They take call centres and factory manufacturing to Indian due to cheap labor rates, we aint going to get any sponsorship out of it what so ever.
media write articles and people beleive the rubbish
also the IPL players took 10 months to get paid. ::)
-
If I was a elite sportsman, I wouldn't want to get hurt in Mumbai, nor would I want to eat or drink anything, nor would I want to inhale any steam in the shower. I've had the pleasure of a number of business trips to Mumbai in the past, now I just choose not to go. It's not worth the two week recovery period.
-
The tanking advocates could get in touch with Gupta and we would fill the coffers of the FTF. :santa
How welcome would Hurley be in India? :police:

Yeah but that is for a sport that they already play and cherish. All I can say is if it does go ahead, Keep McGuane away from the goal posts! Timmmmmberrrrrrrrrrr!!!
-
what a total waste of time
the club would be purely focussed in winning a flag and playing finals footy
would you still be saying that if it meant 2mn in sponsorship $$$$ with Indian companies attempting to penetrate australian market place ::)...I would have thought an astute idea
-
can just see it now, the Indian overseas call centre being a major sponsor.
So you reckon Telstra will be the match day sponsor then ;) ;D

Bombers in talks with Tigers over India game
Jon Pierik
June 12, 2011
ESSENDON chief executive Ian Robson says the Bombers are interested in playing an exhibition match in India but only if it is held as a post-season event.
The Bombers and Richmond are in discussions about staging a game in one of the world's biggest markets but differ on when the game should be held. Robson says the Tigers are in favour of a pre-season game. The Bombers, however, want it as a post-season friendly, in much the same manner Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions clashed in Shanghai last October.
Austrade's senior trade commissioner in New Delhi, Peter Linford, has been working on a detailed bid to stage a match next year, possibly in Mumbai, which will not only promote the AFL but also trade links between the countries.
''There are some conversations that are on-going. Part of that discussion is to whether or not any game out there could be played as a post-season, rather than a pre-season, game,'' Robson said.
''We are leaning towards a post-season scenario, in October, similar to the game Melbourne and Brisbane played up in China last year. There is a question mark to whether or not grounds could be available in October because of cricket commitments.
''That's what we are continuing to have an open conversation with both Richmond and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade about. I know Richmond and some other clubs might have a more open-minded view about a February game and that might be the game that gets up.''

Yep in October-November it's apparently dry and not so humid in Mumbai. Still hot though (30+ degrees) so the game would have to be held at night. February is too close to the start of the season for mine in terms of travel, different environment and then recovery. You'd probably also send your bottom 22 so our star players aren't risked.

It looks like the RFC are building stronger ties with India....

Indian star Rahul Dravid backs Tiger push for Indian support

Indian batsman Rahul Dravid with Richmond vice-captain Trent Cotchin at Punt Rd. Herald Sun
WITH batting maestro Rahul Dravid on board, Richmond is hoping to tap into India's large supporter base as part of its broader plans to take AFL to the subcontinent in the coming years.
Dravid is a patron for the new Richmond supporter group, the Indian Tigers, which the club believes is an important first step in getting the Indian community involved in the AFL.
"Sport brings people together, I have seen that all over the world. It's great that Richmond is connecting with the Indian community," Dravid said.
"I like the idea of the Indian Tigers supporter group - it will give Indians another team and another sport to follow.
"I have watched some games on television - it is fast and very physical. It would be great to see a game played in India."
The Indian supporter group will receive free ticket offers and clinics for young fans, while the club also plans to have a dedicated match day next season.
Richmond has already taken some steps to forging a relationship with the Indian community.
Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale hoped the supporter group would forge a link. "It is fantastic to have someone of Rahul Dravid's standing support what we are trying to do with the Indian community," Gale said.
"We started to engage more significantly this year - hosting the Indian team during the International Cup and having a presence at the Diwali Festival."
The Tigers hope to play an exhibition game in India and have started investigating facilities.

whoa, way to go i say, if we can get say 1% of their population as members, two words, LOOK OUT...and do it Hawthorn style as in 1 game membership tickets. Buy a seat to a lockout in mumbai and you guessed it, a restricted member, NO voting rights...sounds crazy but it just might work :shh

It will either be a huge success or fail massively!
-
The way the league is at the moment if you are not trying to innovate and widen the scope for membership then you will get left behind. I reckon its a great idea by the club. It is no guarantee to work but it is certainly worth pursuing in my opinion.

Ch 7 and 9 newses just showed the story about Richmond in India :thumbsup. Ted Baillieu had to say to the kids "who is the best team? Go Cats" ::)

Tigers, Giants agree to pre-season match in India
by: Neil Cordy
From: Herald Sun
February 27, 2012
RICHMOND'S ambition to play an AFL match in India looks set to be realised, with Greater Western Sydney agreeing to play a pre-season game there against the Tigers next year.
The Tigers and Giants have agreed to play the match in Mumbai next February, most likely at the DY Patil Stadium, a state-of-the-art 60,000 seater that hosts Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale has been floating the idea for some time, but had struggled to find an AFL club willing to participate, with Essendon angling for a post-season clash.
But the Giants, coached by the lateral-thinking Kevin Sheedy, are open to the pre-season date, and see it as an opportunity to snare new fans and even players.
"If teams are a chance of winning a premiership I can understand their reluctance to travel such a distance to play a match because it can interfere with their preparation but we just need to play games," Sheedy said.
"We've already expanded nationally with our game now it's time to grow it internationally." Giants boss David Matthews said: "We've got two kids in our academy from Indian heritage and you only had to be in the crowd at ANZ Stadium for the Twenty20 international to see what sort of an atmosphere an Indian crowd creates."
Tendulkar's Test teammate, Rahul Dravid, is a patron of the new Richmond supporter group, the Indian Tigers, which the club believes is an important first step in getting the Indian community involved in the AFL.
"It will give Indians another team and another sport to follow," Dravid said.
"I have watched some games on television - it is fast and very physical. It would be great to see a game played in India."
The match is seen as a way to repair Melbourne's troubled relationship with India after last year's rash of assaults on students.
Premier Ted Baillieu was in Mumbai over the weekend promoting Victoria as a tourist destination, and is believed to have discussed the AFL match.

I did a quick google search and couldn't find the actual dimensions of the ground. The playing surface is 20,000 sq m so if you take the playing arena as a circle then that's roughly 160m in diameter which I think is roughly similar in size and dimensions to the SCG.

Tigers, Giants get set for Mumbai
Clay Lucas, Mumbai
February 27, 2012
RICHMOND and Greater Western Sydney are poised to play a demonstration match in Mumbai, India, next February, with GWS also pushing to play a match there for premiership points.
A match in India was first flagged last April, with speculation the Tigers would play Essendon in 2012 to help both teams grab a presence in one of the world's biggest markets. That game, touted as a potential round of the NAB Cup, did not eventuate.
But Austrade commissioner Peter Linford, in Mumbai on Saturday for the Baillieu government's week-long trade mission to India, said any match would now feature Richmond and the Giants.
''[They] have both indicated they would like to play next February,'' he said.
The Bombers had wanted to stage a post-season game, Mr Linford said.
''That doesn't work for us in terms of the ground access and logistics.''
A match in Mumbai would be staged at the D. Y. Patil Stadium, he said.
''[Richmond chief executive] Brendon Gale was out here last year, and he went and saw the ground,'' Linford said.
Other Richmond club officials again inspected it last week.
''It's probably the best ground from a cricket level in India, and [staff there would] water it down so it's a bit softer than the normal cricket surfaces here,'' he said.
Around 25 Australian companies helped stage a similar exhibition match in Dubai in 2007.
The Tigers are pushing hard to grab the support of Melbourne's rapidly growing Indian community, last year getting Indian batsman Rahul Dravid to sign on as patron of the Indian Tigers supporter group.
Richmond's Simon Matthews, in India on the government's trade delegation, was reluctant to confirm whether GWS would play in Mumbai.
But the Giants' spokesman, Nick Johnston, yesterday confirmed the club was interested in the match.
''And if there was a possibility of playing for premiership points we'd be interested in that, too,'' he said.
The Giants are also looking to increase their links with the Indian community in western Sydney.
Premier Ted Baillieu, who had a kick on Saturday with Mumbai youngsters kitted out in Richmond jumpers, said the Tigers should be commended for trying to connect with the Indian community in Victoria.
''Hats off to Richmond who have been prepared to make this commitment,'' Baillieu said.

AFL budget cuts means no preseason game in India for at least a further 12 months ...

Some very narrow small minded people making some stupid if not racist comments about India when they probably have not even been there! And if you have yes it is different but that happens around the world? However would point our that this is a serious initiative that could poor $millions into the club if successful. There is a also a huge Indian population in Melbourne ready to be tapped into as well.
Before you make stupid derogatory comments - look at the rewards or benefits it could bring the club.
If you are offended then good.
-
OMFG......really, we can't even win in QLD....I don't believe it, fools!

And they are untainted by 30 years of masochism ::) If anyone deserves some humorous introspection it's us Tiger's members/supporters....don't you think. Think of it this way, we are just readying the Indians for more of the same. - it's a community service :thumbsup
-
I can accept some more of the humorous banters however pretty disappointed that people cannot be more positive above some initiatives or changes. They spend and waste a lot of energy being negative instead of making some positive contributions as to how it may work?
People are entitled to their opinions - realise that however if only they could use their brains / thoughts for goodness rather than evil..

Rahul Dravid for coach please that should get the FTF over 10 million
It's all about stuffing money into their own coffers
Nothing about success. We've had enough members money to run a successful footy team for the last ten years but the same results are displayed
The salary cap is fixed for all teams so what's the excuse more money more success
We have got more money than you can poke sticks at
so they have to spend it and it can't exceed the salary cap
Simple maths they are having a ball with the surplus money giving the admin team huge pay rises
FFS or FTF
-
my issue is that alot of indians think that they are above everyone else and that most of them are cheap skates who never wanna pay for anything - they expect everything for free.
100 % correct flags. And their proud of it too.
Evidence from my favourite comedian and of Indian heritage, the very funny Russell Peters.

Indian cricket great Rahul Dravid is delighted to be the patron of the Indian Tigers Support Group.
“Sport brings people together. I have seen that all over the world. It’s great that Richmond is connecting with the Indian community,” said the champion batsman, who visited the ME Bank Centre at Punt Road Oval on the eve of the 2011 Boxing Day Test.
“I like the idea of the Indian Tigers supporter group – it will give Indians another team and another sport to follow. I have watched some games on television – it is fast and very physical. It would be great to see a game played in India one day.”
Indeed, Richmond does have aspirations to play an exhibition game in Mumbai in the near future. As part of this planned activity Richmond officials recently joined a Victorian State Government Trade Mission in India this month.

Indian push
By Ben Collins
Sun 25 Nov, 2012
THE TENTACLES of Australian Football are ever-expanding, even in parts of the globe that once appeared impenetrable. And here's another example of the game's extraordinary reach and impact.
On December 1 and 2, cricket-mad India will host its first Australian Football tournament. Adding to the surreal nature of the event, Australian cricket great Steve Waugh is the tournament ambassador.
The AFL push into India is not a recent development. AFL India has existed in different guises for several years, and organised games have been played there since 2007.
'Captain Kirk's Odyssey' - a 2011 tour by Sydney premiership player Brett Kirk, then the AFL's international ambassador - gave the sport a decent kick-along, and not just in India, but also South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Richmond has also been active in trying to make inroads into what it sees as a vast, untapped market. The Tigers have plans to play an exhibition game in India, and have been pulling out all stops to garner local support.
They hosted Bollywood superstar actress Vidya Balan at their round seven clash with Sydney at the MCG, and have enlisted Indian cricket star Rahul Dravid as patron of their Indian Tigers supporter group.
Dravid is one of Waugh's greatest admirers. They are firm friends who catch up for dinner whenever their paths cross - a possibility during the Indian footy tournament.
Such non-cricket ambassadorial roles are not foreign to Waugh, who mentored the Socceroos during the 2007 Asian Cup and the Australian Olympic team in Beijing in 2008.
And AFL isn’t entirely foreign to the former Australian captain. In February, he spoke to the newly installed leadership group at Greater Western Sydney.
Raised in Sydney's south-western suburbs, Waugh sees great merit in the AFL's push into rugby territory.
His involvement in the Indian footy initiative is a considerable departure from the norm for him, largely because of the setting. But in many ways the 47-year-old is the ideal candidate for the role.
Waugh is fascinated by India, which holds for him both good and bad memories: the disappointment of never winning a Test series there is soothed somewhat by his love of the culture and the people.
But strangely, after touring the sub-continent on numerous occasions as a cricketer, this time Waugh's journey will involve a much bigger red leather ball.
And the sport he will promote is perhaps accessible to more people than his chosen sport. (There is less financial outlay for equipment, for a start.) Indeed, competition organisers trumpet in a press release that teams will comprise "players from the slums of Mumbai, middleclass Indian teenagers and affluent uni students".
Organised by AFL India, in conjunction with Global Community Sports and Reclink Australia, the competition will feature teams from the cities of Madurai, Mumbai and host Kozhikode. They will don the colours of Richmond (of course), Essendon, Geelong, North Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney.
About 10 games will be played in a round-robin format over the two days, culminating in a grand final. The winning team will earn bragging rights as national champions.
There are also some individual rewards on offer. Players will have the chance to push for selection in the national side (the India Tigers) for the next AFL International Cup, and one lucky player will be chosen to travel to Australia as part of a football exchange program.
The event is the result of a three-year campaign by AFL India to promote the sport. It will be sponsored by the Perth-based Oil and Gas Mining Institute and Australia Unlimited.
Sudip Chakraborty - the AFL India president who doubles as captain of his national team - describes the competition as "a dream come true".
He harbours a much bigger dream: that of creating enough attention in the Australian game to attract widespread interest and participation, school programs, and the biggie - establishing an "all-India league". All within five years.
Considering the atmosphere Indian fans create at big cricket matches, that would be something to behold.

Should be a major success. Whilst we all pay and have for years these bludgers will be getting in for free. The funny part is the club knows these people are bludgers and dont pay for anything so they just caved in lol. Whats a stuffen joke.
-
have to say I don't agree with this initiative by the club. understand the logic but just doesn't sit right
Free Memberships for people based on their nationality? Hmmmm
-
Yep exactly, not here to offend anyone but oops. They take offence to anything and are quick to poin the finger.
If ur not gonna contribute $$$$ sod off, would rather give free membershipps to the homeless and feed them as well.
-
Racist club
-
Typical response from some of you lot. The what about us mentality.
The club sees it as a opportunity to lure more supporters and whilst they get free memberships I'm sure they also sell merchandise which goes straight to the club.
Get over it people it's a great initiative.

They wont be buying merchandise, they will want it for free. I want free memberships for all Wogs. The wogs who came here in the 50s and the 60s and their children, the ones who came in droves, who lived in Richmond, who didnt have a lot of money but nevertheless they adopted this club so they put money in, sometimes they put money in they didnt have, how come no free memberships for these people?

Agree with you and WP. This doesn't sit right with me either. I actually remember a mate of mine (who had fallen on tough times), ringing the club during Wallet's tenure and asked them if they had a discounted membership for those with a Health Care Card.....they said no.... this bloke had been a member for a decade earlier in his life.....so to all Indians or anyone else.........pay or no play....imo.

Sorry daniel it not about the "what about us mentality"
Because it's not about me or what do I get or why don't I get freebies it's about the fact they are offering something for free to people based on the nationality.
Last time I checked in this political correct world in which now live there's a good chance it would be deemed racist. But for some reason in this case it isn't. Why?
But more importantly as Runaidh & Ramps mention what about other people who can't afford memberships because of genuine hardship? Why aren't/haven't they been shown the same generosity from our Club
As I said I understand the clubs reasoning but it just doesn't sit right with me
-
i agree with the general push to expand the supporter base and to target India in particular. However i must admit offering free memberships just doesnt sit well, considering so many supporters out there do it hard and yet were still able to contribute to the fighting tiger fund..To me membership has a responsibility too not something to be tossed around with gay abandon.

I actually have quite a few Indian clients and let me tell you they aren't half as tight as some of us english or greeks. I know greeks and italians who make Indians look like the biggest spenders you are ever likely to meet.
all nationalities are the same. Some as tight as each other.
regardless why care about what they are doing worry about what your doing. Similar problem throughout society if you ask me
If some buy merchandise and become members then its a success IMO.
at the end of the day WGAF, seriously
-
greeks and Italian are tight right now because they are just following their country men whose economies are down the toilet at the moment..maybe its a sympathy vote :)
-
As I said I understand the clubs reasoning but it just doesn't sit right with me
I think I also get the club's reasoning and see it as a 'hook' to use sales speak. If the membership is gratis for the first year and that causes a significant percentage to re-sign next year at normal rates then it's a fantastic campaign. If not, then nothing ventured nothing gained but with the rider that they don't continue to offer the freebie. Just my take.
-
So let me get this straight, what's the criteria to qualify for free membership? Is it you have to be of Indian descent, born in India or hold an Indian passport?
What about existing members who meet the new criteria? Do they get 3 games free?

If you have to give it away, it has no value. I too disagree with this move and I'm usually pretty positive about the clubs marketing ventures.

this is correct Ive seen it plenty of times ;D. It pays to not be a cheapskate ;D. You get what you pay for and some greeks and italians are other wogs are tight arses :lol of that I have no doubt but that doesnt excuse the club giving the indians free memberships. On another matter do these indians on the freebies are they entitled to vote for board members and other club resolutions?

Richmond, GWS Giants planning to play in India for premiership points next year
MICHAEL WARNER,
Herald Sun
24 June 2017
RICHMOND and Greater Western Sydney are pushing to play a game for premiership points in India next season.
The historic match would likely be played at the 30,000-seat DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai during the mid-season bye rounds.
AFL chiefs have been briefed on the proposal that would gazump a plan by Essendon and Adelaide — revealed in Friday’s Herald Sun — to stage a pre-season or exhibition game on the subcontinent.
The Tigers-Giants clash on Indian soil will be fixtured as a GWS home game to ensure Richmond’s army of supporters are not robbed of a match in Melbourne.
“Both clubs have the ambition to play for premiership points in Mumbai as early as next year,” Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale confirmed.
“Clearly, there is a lot of work to be done to make this a reality, but we are absolutely committed to working with the Giants.
Indian great Rahul Dravid with Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.
“India is a massive market and the commercial implications in the mid-to-long term could be very significant, so as a business we need to genuinely explore the opportunity.
“A game in India for four points would be a serious statement of intent and a foundation for us to build on.”
A Giants spokesman said: “We are aware there is a significant amount of work to do before the ambition of playing an AFL game for points in India can be realised, but we look forward to continuing talks with the AFL and the Tigers.
“Indian-born migrants are the third largest population group in Sydney, with many settling in Western Sydney.”
Richmond has already established a significant ambassadorial network in India, including Bollywood stars, key political figures and Indian cricketers Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli.
Discussions with the AFL will continue ahead of the preparation for next year’s AFL fixture.
Richmond sees the Tiger — a secular symbol in India — as a selling point.
Representation of AFL clubs from Sydney and Melbourne is also seen as an advantage.
“At the invitation of Austrade, club representatives have travelled to India a number of times and that included identifying a potential venue in Mumbai that could host a game,” Gale said.
“We were also part of a State Government trade mission so we have built significant links both locally and in India.
“We seriously explored the potential of playing a game in India five years ago so the idea is nothing new. We do however welcome the renewed interest from the AFL and are keen to work with the Giants to make this happen.”
Port Adelaide is also in talks with the league to continue its commitment to play an annual game in China.
Gold Coast agreed to surrender a home match to play the Power in Shanghai in Round 8 this year.
Greater Western Sydney’s willingness to do the same will be a key to the proposed 2018 Mumbai match against Richmond.
“This is clearly a significant opportunity for Australian football and given Western Sydney’s demographic make-up and the Giants’ connection with the Indian community, the Giants are a logical consideration for a game in India,” the Giants spokesman said.
“New South Wales’ economic base is an undeniable consideration when looking to further build links with India and the Indian community in Australia via an AFL premiership game.”

we don't lose a home game as it would be a GWS home game (also ensure that they won't have home ground advantage given it's played in india)

FOUR clubs are visiting India this week as the AFL edges closer to staging a game in the world's second most populous country.
AFL general manager of China and India David Stevenson will fly to India later this week on a fact-finding mission, and will be accompanied by officials from four clubs.
League CEO Gillon McLachlan preferred not to disclose the identity of those clubs at a pre-season briefing with reporters on Wednesday.
But Richmond and Greater Western Sydney have been pushing since last year to play a premiership game in Mumbai, while Essendon and Adelaide have also been investigating playing a pre-season or exhibition game on the subcontinent.

The Rivalry of the Raj is getting close
The Rover
SportingNews.com
8 May 2018
Port Adelaide and Gold Coast are off to Shanghai next week for the second annual China game, and we’re being told it’s a huge success and the expanded arena has been sold out already (‘expanded’ to a capacity of 11,500 – not really something to brag about in a city of 24 million).
This ‘success’ is seeing the League ramp up its efforts to get a game in India and you can be sure there will be AFL action on the sub-continent just two years away in 2020.
Richmond and GWS will hit the Hindu highlife, but there’s uncertainty as to whether it will be for premiership points or just a pre-season game.
Surprisingly it’s the AFL that’s trying to keep it on the slow burner, while the Tigers and Giants are pushing for a home-and-away match.
Both teams are keen to invest evenly in the takings and the potential audience, creating an ‘Indian rivalry’ that will hold its own interest for the locals at the expense of the other 16 clubs.
With 1.3 billion Indians to share there’s no need for either club to be greedy, something ‘Kochy’ could learn from.

AFL clubs set their sights on a multibillion dollar market
Michael Bleby
Australian Financial Review
Jul 29, 2022
Molina Asthana remembers her first-ever Aussie rules game. It was 2003 and she was visiting her then-boyfriend in Melbourne.
“You can’t escape AFL when you come to Australia, particularly Victoria,” says Asthana, a commercial lawyer.
Football is a family affair for Richmond Tigers-supporting Molina Asthana, and everyone in her household has a different team. Elke Meitzel
“North Melbourne was his team – they were losing, so I think he did the walkout. I understood the passion people in Australia have for footy.”
After marrying and moving to Australia in 2004, Asthana found Monday morning football conversations an “initiation” into the workplace. Subsequently, when she was doing community work on family violence, diversity and inclusion, the AFL asked her to become an ambassador for the game.
Offered her choice of clubs to represent, she went for Richmond. The Tigers theme may draw some people of Indian descent, but Asthana, national president of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association, says she was attracted to the club’s existing community engagement efforts.
Now it’s a family thing, even if they back different teams. Asthana and her Kangaroos-supporting husband Ajay have a teenage daughter Diya, who went through Carlton’s Adam Saad Academy development program and now plays for the Kew Comets junior football club in the eastern suburbs.
“Everyone has their own; what they like,” she says. “It’s still a family thing, though.”
Untapped potential
Commercial sports such as AFL have long considered migrant communities as a source of potential fans and talent. Census 2021 figures show they’d be mad not to. More than a quarter of the population was born overseas and India, with 673,352 people, has now overtaken China and New Zealand to become the third-largest country of birth after Australia and England.
In Victoria, the trend is even stronger than any other state or territory. India-born Victorians make up 4 per cent of the state’s population, the second-biggest cohort after Australia-born Victorians.
Richmond steps out on to the MCG on Sunday in a game against Brisbane Lions that the Melbourne team is branding its “many cultures” game. On the same day it will launch a plan to deepen its engagement among Melbourne’s diverse and growing ethnic communities.
“The face of the Australian population has changed significantly and will continue to do so,” Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale says.
“We are a better club for the diversity we have inside our four walls – we need to ensure that is reflected externally.”
It makes sense economically and socially, Asthana says.
“You have more bums on seat at stadiums, you sell more merchandise,” she says.
“It also makes sense from the more social issues piece – they want to connect to the communities. Multicultural communities represent a huge part of the population. We need to include them.”
The proposition is attractive. But it’s a long-term project and various clubs have made efforts, with varying levels of success, to tap the diaspora over years.
Asthana is now an adviser on AFL Victoria’s South East Commission, overseeing community development of the game and is also a member of Sport Australia’s Sport Volunteer Coalition, working to increase participation in sport. She says building up community support among new migrant communities is a long game.
You have more bums on seat at stadiums, you sell more merchandise. It also makes sense from the more social issues piece.
— Richmond ambassador Molina Asthana on diversity
“It has to be family oriented,” she says. “For Indians, it’s not about an individual. It’s the whole family that gets involved. This is not a game they grew up with. Many of them grew up with cricket or soccer, so it’s an easy sell. AFL is not.”
Avi Singh knows that experience. As a child, he wasn’t allowed to play football because his parents felt it was too rough.
Last week Singh, now a multicultural development officer with Melbourne Football Club, held the first session at Casey Fields – a community sporting complex 50 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD – of the South East Multicultural Auskick Centre, a six-week introductory program for children who’ve never held a Sherrin and their parents.
The course teaches how to kick, mark and handball and aims to be fun. There were 51 children with Chinese, Indian and Afghan backgrounds last week. Parents came and watched the session that lasted an hour.
“We’re doing something to make sure kids like myself – with parents born overseas – have that pathway as well,” Singh says. “We want to make sure the parents stay involved in this as much as possible. Without the parents, we can’t get the kids.”
International dreams
Dreams of taking the sport international have prompted AFL clubs to hold exhibition matches in China, but not yet in India. The opportunity is great, however.
India came third in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games medal tally. But with a delegation of 205 athletes to the Birmingham Games that opened on Thursday, compared with 325 at Gold Coast, the country is unlikely to perform as strongly.
The combined market for sports media rights, apparel, supplements and equipment in the world’s largest democracy could rise nearly fourfold to $US100 billion ($142 billion) by 2027 from $US27 billion in 2020, according to a recent report.
Clubs, including Richmond, are thinking about it, having already toured the country and inspected potential stadiums for a game. But the pandemic, along with security and cost considerations, have put any plans on ice.
“As we come out of this, we’d start to explore the opportunity again,” Richmond chief marketing officer Simon Matthews says.
Asthana says any offshore strategy will need the strategic backing of the AFL itself, but that a strong foothold among Australia’s own Indian population will also be crucial to any success in the subcontinent.
“There are definitely benefits that accrue from working with the diaspora, locally and internationally,” she says. “If they want to take the game internationally, the growing diaspora is the best way to do it.”
