Title: Rank our midfielders!
Post by: Stripes on December 16, 2008, 05:14:55 PM
What order what you put our midfielders in now that we have Cousins to add to the mix?

If you have 3 across the middle, 2 following and 4 moving up from half forward/back (part time mids) and 2 on the bench that makes 11 at a stretch midfielder types in any team.

For mine -

1. Foley
2. Lids
3. Cousins
4. Tuck
5. White
6. Cotchin
7. Thomson
8. Tambling
9. Hislop
10. Johnson
11. Connors
12. Cogs
-----------
13. Jackson
14. Polo
16. Raines
17. King
18. Collins

I could see Hislop, Raines, King or Tambling playing as the running half backs and possibly Connors, White and Cotchin up the other end as crumbers/small forwards.

I have not put Richo, McMahon, Newman, Morton, Brown or Bowden into the midfield mix either but they frequently move up the ground (particularly Richo who plays on the wing) to rotate through this part of the ground.

So all in all, if you include Richo and co. we have 24 potential midfield/winger types competing for a maximum of 11 places and the difference between the players in minimial at best!

What would your order be?

Some perspective please people, Cotchin is not in our Top 3 midfielders yet

1. Deledio
2. Tuck
3. Foley
4. Cousins (should be #1-2 but he's too much of an unknown at this stage)
5. Johnson
6. Cotchin
7. Jackson
8. White
9. Coughlan
10. Raffle it between half a dozen who haven't established themselved in an AFL starting 22 yet

Agree Foley needs to recapture 2007 form to lose the soft label.
Once he played for the Vics in May his form was at best spasmodic and he showed an inability to shake a tag and struggled a little bit with the extra attention. We will see how Axel and the rest of the Lads cope with all this scrutiny and Ben and who'll get the best tagger. I think based on what we have seen it will be Lids or Axel as Ben Cousins is a bit of unknown now and opposition clubs won't want to give him too much respect but won't want to underestimate him either.

Interesting question, we certainly have a lot of midfield talent on the way.

Deledio number 1 for mine, he will be close to/as good as Cuz/Judd in a couple of years IMO.  Like the way he is looking this year to just quietly.

1. Deledio
2. Tuck
3. Cousins
4. Foley
5. Jackson
6. Cotchin
7. Tambling
8. White
9. Polo
10. Hislop/Thomson/Cogs/Johnson

a bit ambitious with thomo ahead of tambling just yet...I expect richie to continue to improve, Im impressed that he has put on more muscle...in fairness Thomo has it all before him...heres hoping....I expect that connors will be HB or HF rather than midfield, Jordy mc would be more of an option that connors ...we've got some options though and thats exciting :clapping

Top 6 in no particular order:

Deledio. Obviously no argument.
Foley. No argument.
Tuck. Underrated adn a very efficient player.
Cousins. If he is half the player he was he'll be good.
Cotchin. Potential to be a star.
Coughlan. If everythig falls for him.

I think at his fittest, Foley is our best and most damaging on baller. He sets us up.
Lids and Tuck represent the next level.
Cuz, Johnston, Tambling, Cotchin and White are next.

The rest need to prove themselves.

Maybe just at this stage, I fully expect Lids to go past Foley this year as our best midfielder and Cotch to pass Foley the year after.

The type of player Tuck is to complement the class of Lids and Cotch cant be underestimated either.

I remarked before the beginning of last season that the Kel Moore doughters would eat their words, I repeat the same for this season regarding Daniel Jackson

I would like to see Jackson rested at coburg and tuck be given a shot in his role.

I know tuck is old and it goes
against hardwick youth policy but tuck is could play till 40 yoa and is a exception.

Before we point fingers at Cotch how about Edwards Farmer Grigg Jackson Hislop as midfield types.
Jackson is way way overated. Awful display from a "leader" of the footy club.
Martin as a midfielder was most disappointing today. Not enough hard running when he does not have the ball. He is where our hopes and our future lies. Other aforementioned players were collectively very disappointing.

There is nothing to be lost by playing Tuck till the end of the season. Play him. Agree with comments we have a long way to go

what is going on with white, I thought he started to come good and something I have noticed this year is we are getting SLOOOOW compared to last year.  We had some serious toe when we started winning games now we are starting to turn into slugs.

Statistically our top mids are pulling huge disposal numbers each and every week. Lids is #1.

                    Avg. disp.
Brett Deledio   28.5
Shaun Grigg    27.2
Trent Cotchin   26.2
Shane Tuck      25.1
Nathan Foley    23.3
Dustin Martin   23.2

Big Ivan is averaging 16.6 disposals and 29 hitouts.

The other two averaging above 20 disposals are defenders.
Bachar Houli     21.4
Alex Rance       20.6

There are 17 Tigers averaging roughly 15 disposals or more this year.
