Players to watch - Division 2
By Jason Phelan
Wed 23 May, 2012
STATE and territory talent managers take a look at the players to watch from Division Two in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, which begin this weekend.
Northern Territory
Jed Anderson, Darwin FC, 16 February 1994, 178cm, 75kg
Jed played with us last year as an under-age player and he also played in a senior NEAFL premiership side with the NT Thunder. He's already received two nominations for the best player in the NEAFL northern conference this year. He's been playing in the midfield and he was good against the Sydney Swans and GWS reserves sides. He's an NTIS scholarship holder.
Louis Egger, Federal FC, 5 June 1993, 184cm, 74kg
Louis played in a few of our games last year and got invited to the draft combine. He had a hand injury in the last three games of last year's nationals, but he's moved to Melbourne for university and has been playing with the Coburg Tigers. He's a super-competitive mid-sized utility and played in the NEAFL grand final last year and was one of the best players.
Damien Williams, Darwin FC, 21 November 1993, 180cm, 69kg
Damien has played with GWS for the last couple of years and wasn't taken as a priority pick, but he's really come on since he joined the Thunder. He's only 180cm, but we got stuck against the Brisbane Lions [reserves] and he rucked most of the day against [former Bulldogs ruckman] Ben Hudson and he performed pretty well.
- NT talent manager Wally Gallio
Tasmania
Jesse Lonergan, Launceston FC, 14 November 1994, 183cm, 86kg
Jesse is our only AIS-AFL Academy player this year and he played every game for us as an under-age player last year. He's an inside midfielder, who has played three seasons of senior footy now and was a premiership player at senior level with Launceston last year. He's the nephew of Essendon's Sam Lonergan and has a similar style of game. He possesses excellent speed and power for the inside game and has the physical presence to match.
Josh Grant, Glenorchy FC, 1 March 1994, 197cm, 89kg
Josh is from Glenorchy Football Club and is a key forward who is developing as a back man as well. He played games for us last year and, like a lot of tall players, he's still developing aspects of his game like competitiveness, but he has some excellent athletic attributes and is very agile. We'll really be looking for him to provide a target and plenty of competitive effort up forward.
Jackson Thurlow, Launceston FC, 28 March 1994, 189cm, 79kg
Jackson is a 189cm utility who can play forward, midfield and back. He can play anywhere on the ground and played almost every game with us at last year's champs. He was also part of Launceston's senior premiership team. He's a very good kick, is a good reader of the play and is excellent overhead.
- Tasmania talent manager Nick Probert
NSW/ACT Rams
Craig Moller, Sydney University, 22 August 1994, 203cm, 84kg
Craig is a 203cm ruckman who is capable of going forward, taking marks and kicking goals. He's very athletic, he tested as one of our quickest players over 20m, and is very agile as well. He's a Fremantle scholarship player. He's still very light and lean, but he has all the athletic attributes you'd want.
Liam Flaherty, Eastlake FC, 14 November 1993, 194cm, 87kg
Liam is from the ACT and he's one of our over-age kids. He was injured for a lot of last year so we'll give him an opportunity this year. He's a 194cm key forward with very good hands. He's a strong mark, but is also quite adept at ground level and has a nose for the goals. He's been playing senior footy for Eastlake in the NEAFL.
Tom Hargreave, Murray Bushrangers, 4 July 1994, 182cm, 77kg
Tom is a midfielder who can go forward. He has very good skills and is a ball winner. He has clean hands and is very good with that first possession. He's right-footed, but is skilful on both sides of his body. He'll potentially be one of leaders as well.
- NSW/ACT coach Jason Saddington
Queensland
Andrew Boston, Broadbeach FC, 23 March 1994, 180cm, 75kg
Andrew is a talented midfielder with very good disposal skills on both sides of his body. He's got good leadership skills, he was captain of the Gold Coast Suns academy, and has the ability to go forward and kick goals while either running through the midfield or as a small defensive forward. He's become a regular senior player for Broadbeach in the NEAFL competition and has a bag of six goals to his name. He has a NAB Rising Star nomination in NEAFL northern conference.
Tyler Jones, Redland FC, 3 February 1994, 182cm, 80kg
Tyler is a long-kicking, hard-running defender, originally from Mackay, who has forced his way into the senior side at Redland in the NEAFL. He played in last year's reserves premiership side. He has a very good temperament, great concentration and really loves a contest. He's also started to take on some midfield roles for the Scorpions.
James Ives, Aspley FC, 22 March 1994, 176cm, 77kg
James is a talented midfielder who reads the play well and is a very good clearance and stoppage player. He has outstanding leadership qualities, he was the captain of our under-16 team two years ago, and was also the captain of the Brisbane Lions under-18 academy side this year. He's very creative around the goals. He debuted at senior level with Aspley in the NEAFL competition late in 2011 after overcoming a broken collarbone he sustained in one of our trial games last year.

Ones to watch - Division 1
By Jason Phelan
Thu 24 May, 2012
STATE and territory talent managers take a look at the players to watch from Division One in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, which begin this weekend.
Vic Metro
James Stewart, Sandringham Dragons, 4 March 1994, 197cm, 82kg
James is a tall, athletic key-position prospect with good kicking skills, who goes to school at Scotch College (and is the son of Collingwood's Craig). He has good agility and mobility. He's resumed football this year after a period of time dealing with a back complaint and has actually grown quite an enormous amount in the past 14 months. He's an AIS-AFL Academy member.
Nick Vlastuin, Northern Knights, 19 April 1994, 187cm, 83kgs
Nick is a quality inside midfielder who has developed an outside game. He's a good kick off his right foot, but he's sound on both sides. He's very competitive, makes good decisions and tends to take charge out on the ground and make things happen. He's a quality young man who leads by example - a real coach's player. AIS-AFL Academy member.
Liam McBean, Calder Cannons, 25 August 1994, 202cm, 84kg
Liam is athletic for his size and has a lot of developing to come in terms of body strength, but he really moves around the ground very well. He's a bit similar to Joe Daniher in that they both have good mobility for a tall, have good skills and know the game pretty well. He's been with the AIS-AFL Academy for the past two years.
Jonathan O'Rourke, Calder Cannons, 21 April 1994, 183cm, 75kg
He's in his second year in the AIS-AFL Academy and he's developing into a very rounded midfielder in terms of his inside and outside game and he has a very good tank. He's a very good decision maker with excellent kicking skills and good hands in close. He's not a big lad, but he's actually quite a good tackler for his size. He tends to lead by example, but is developing those leadership qualities.
- Vic Metro talent manager Anton Grbac
Vic Country
Lachie Whitfield, Dandenong Stingrays, 18 July 1994, 184cm, 74kg
Lachie's been in the AIS-AFL Academy for the last two years and won the player of the national carnival award for us as an under-age player last year. He's an outstanding, skilful player who has been touted as a very early draft pick. He played well in the Academy-Box Hill game before they went on tour. He's been playing most of his footy with his school this year.
Jake Stringer, Bendigo Pioneers, 25 April 1994, 191cm, 91kg
Jake is an interesting player because he's coming off missing 12 months with a broken leg. He's done all the hard work and is starting to play some sound TAC Cup footy, so it will be interesting to see how he plays against higher quality opposition. He's a forward [who kicked nine goals a few weeks back] and he's got his spring back, which is good.
Ollie Wines, Bendigo Pioneers, 7 October 1994, 185cm, 83kg
Ollie is a right-footed, inside midfielder and his form since he came back from the Academy tour has been exceptional, which is really encouraging. He's grown a fair bit in the last year and his finishing skills are pretty good.
Tim Membrey, Gippsland Power, 26 May 1994, 188cm, 87kg
Tim was added late to the AIS-AFL squad. He played predominantly as a key forward last year and is a real goalkicker. We're working with him to play a bit higher up the ground.
- Vic Country talent manager Leon Harris
South Australia
Jimmy Toumpas, Woodville-West Torrens, 2 January 1994, 183cm, 77kg
Jimmy played in last year's champs and he's a genuine chance to be a high draft pick. While everyone talks about his excellent Grand Final [for the Eagles' premiership team], I think his whole finals series was outstanding. It indicates to me that he's almost capable of playing senior AFL footy right now.
Brodie Grundy, Sturt, 15 April 1994, 202cm, 100kg
Brodie is the standout tall man in the competition at this stage. He played for us last year, continued to develop and recently made his league debut with Sturt. He has a number of impressive traits with his athleticism and jump at the ball and what I like about him is his competitive nature. He gets after the contest with a bit of vigour and that's something that coaches always like. He's also developing his ability to go forward and take really good marks.
Troy Menzel, Central Districts, 22 September 1994, 186cm, 77kg
Troy is the brother of Geelong's Daniel and he's a very cluey midfielder-forward who can really find the footy and use it pretty well. He's very evasive around a contest and can really find his way in and out of traffic very quickly. He's up and about and travelling pretty well with a very strong football club in Central Districts.
Sam Mayes, North Adelaide, 20 May 1994, 187cm, 78kg
Sam is a forward-midfielder who is really an elite kicker of the football, which is paramount these days. He's got a number of strings to his bow - we played him down back a bit in last year's champs and he did that successfully - and he brings a real energy to the team.
- SA talent manager/coach Brenton Phillips
Western Australia
Dayle Garlett, Swan Districts, 9 January 1994, 180cm, 75kg
Dayle is a slick, skilful midfielder with an excellent work rate. He has the ability to really turn a game on its head. We're really happy with his progress in our academy after a few setbacks early on. He's come back with a point to prove. He's been a regular senior player for Swan Districts.
Jesse Hogan, Claremont, 12 February 1995, 193cm, 91kg
Jesse is a powerful key forward/defender in the mould of Jonathan Brown. He's good overhead and very explosive off the mark for his size. We almost considered playing him in our under-18s team as a 16-year-old. He'd be in the top two or three players in the WAFL colts competition. He falls into the GWS mini-draft pool.
Marco Paparone, East Fremantle, 3 September 1994, 193cm, 84kg
Marco has elite endurance and has the ability to wear down opponents. He's a midfielder-forward who is strong overhead and can get outside well. For a boy of his size, he has excellent athletic attributes.
Mason Shaw, South Fremantle, 15 January 1994, 197cm, 82kg
Mason suffered a broken jaw early in the season, but in his first game back for the colts he kicked 8.4 and didn't look like he'd been away from the game at all. He's a clever power forward who is strong on the lead and can also pinch-hit in the ruck.

Rioli cousins wreak havoc in Thunder's U18 stunner
By Ben Guthrie

Willy Rioli
THE NORTHERN Territory has caused a major boilover, upsetting defending champions Vic Metro by 18 points in their NAB AFL Under-18 Championships clash at Darwin's TIO Stadium on Saturday night.
The Thunder led at every change, and withstood Metro's late charge to record a memorable 15.10 (100) to 11.16 (82) victory.
The players were ecstatic after the game, singing the team song on the ground in front of their faithful fans.
For the Thunder, Anthony Tipungwuti and Damien Barry's run and carry was influential in setting the tempo for their side and Jake Neade was excellent in the clinches.
Ben Rioli and Willy Rioli, cousins of Hawthorn's Cyril, wreaked havoc all night and 2011 under-18 All Australian Jed Anderson was another major instigator in the win.
Urged on by their home crowd, the Thunder's relentless pressure was evident early in the game and it seemed to trouble the Metro team.
The Thunder tackled ferociously, setting a match-defining standard in the first half, and caused Vic Metro to cough up the ball at inopportune times.
Metro's Luke McDonald, son of North Melbourne's Donald, fought valiantly for his side, alongside Ben Lennon and Nick Vlastuin, despite the Thunder's strong intent.
The Thunder's tackling onslaught continued in the second half, as they forced the Metro players to earn every possession.
Ashlin Brown, though, was a constant threat up forward for Vic Metro with four goals and Lennon (two) was also amongst the best.
Metro clawed back to within a couple of goals in the final term, although the night belonged to the Thunder in what AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan described as "one of the greatest wins in the team's history".
The Thunder will take a lot out of defeating the division-one powerhouse, despite Metro missing star players Joe Daniher (Essendon father-son in waiting), Liam McBean and Jonathan O'Rourke.
Territory coach Brendan Toy was delighted with the pressure his team applied and praised his players for their work rate.
Metro coach Rohan Welsh will look to address the disposal efficiency of his side and will demand quick improvement in the side's next match against South Australia on June 16.
The Thunder's next game is also against South Australia on June 10.

Crouch fires Vic Country to U18 win
By Ben Guthrie

VIC COUNTRY 2.2 4.6 7.7 8.12 (60)

Vic Country: Crouch 2, Scott, Tsitas, Martyn, Garner, Lockyer
NSW/ACT: Flaherty 2, Vearing 2, Hampton 2, Burgess
BEST
NSW/ACT: Williams, Robinson, Weir, Hampton, Keogh, Baker
Vic Country: Crouch, Graham, Hartung, Kearns, Close, Garner
A STANDOUT performance from Vic Country's Matt Crouch has spurred his side to a nine-point win over NSW/ACT in the second game of the NAB Under-18 AFL Championships at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday.
Country withstood a defiant NSW/ACT side to win 8.12 (60) to 7.9 (51).
Crouch thrived in the wet conditions up in Sydney, collecting 29 disposals (22 contested) and 10 clearances and kicking two goals in a best-on-ground display.
The 17-year-old left-footer, hailing from Beaufort near Ballarat, is the brother of Adelaide's Brad who was snapped up by the Crows in last year's GWS mini-draft.
Country's Nick Graham and Billy Hartung were other players to catch the eye.
It is the first time a division one side has emerged victorious this year, after the Northern Territory and Queensland got the better of Vic Metro and Western Australia in the earlier games.
But Country did not have everything go their own way, with the Rams - led by the star-studded coaching panel of Jason Saddington (Sydney Swans), Brad Ottens (Geelong) and Tadhg Kennelly (Swans) - forcing them to work for it all the way.
For the Rams, the exciting Lonnie Hampton booted two goals to go with his 24 possessions.
Daniel Robinson (27 touches) and Zac Williams (24) fought particularly hard in a losing cause.
Rams coach Saddington said after the game he was pleased with the endeavour his side showed, as the Rams closed the margin to six points in the last term.
A couple of behinds from Country cemented the result in the end, but the Rams showed plenty of spirit in a tight and tough contest.

QUEENSLAND has defeated Western Australia for the first time in its history with an upset two-point win in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships on Saturday.
In their opening round clash at Blacktown International Sportspark, the Scorpions fought back from 17 points down midway through the final term to record a 10.6 (66) to 8.16 (64) win.
It was the second upset win of the Championships after division two's Northern Territory shocked its highly-fancied division one opponents, Vic Metro, by 18 points in Darwin last week.
Queensland 17-year-old Cain Tickner kicked two pivotal goals within minutes in the last quarter, including the sealer.
The game winner, kicked from 45m on a tight angle with a wet ball, emphasised his class in a four-goal best on ground performance.
Teammate James Ives worked tirelessly in the engine room with 27 possessions.
For WA, Sean Lynch had 34 possessions and was instrumental on the wing.
Speedster Shannon Taylor, who was considered by Greater Western Sydney in last year's mini draft, was clean under pressure and used the ball effectively in his 25 touches.
The highly-rated Dayle Garlett was lively with 21 disposals and enhanced his reputation with another standout game.

Daniel Menzel's younger brother kicked 9 goals for SA against Tassie today....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JUST 24 hours after Geelong's Daniel Menzel tore his ACL in his return from a serious injury in the VFL, younger brother Troy shone with nine goals for South Australia at under-18 level.
South Australia recorded a gigantic 144-point win over Tasmania in their NAB AFL Under-18 clash at Blundstone Arena in Hobart on Sunday, winning 30.14 (194) to 7.8 (50).
Troy Menzel, who had LARS surgery as a 16-year-old almost two years ago on his own knee, is considered a possible top 20 draft pick this year.
Like his brother, Troy is an exciting prospect who is elusive in the forward line but also has the ability to push through the midfield at certain stages.
He has played a number of games at senior SANFL level for Central District this season and has held his own.
South Australia dominated the clash with Tassie from the outset, ticking over the 500-possession mark and going inside its forward 50 on a staggering 73 occasions.
Boasting nine AIS/AFL Academy players, South Australia's crisp ball movement, hard spread and overlap run, and overall polish emphasised the difference in class between the two states.
Highly rated draft prospects Ben Kennedy (37 touches and four goals), Jimmy Toumpas (34) and Brody Grundy (20 possessions, 26 hit-outs and three goals) were all outstanding.
Despite being undermanned, Calen Jeffery (28 disposals) and Jackson Thurlow (25) fought hard for Tasmania, while the 201cm Ben Webster showed some promising signs, including a big grab in the last quarter that caught recruiters' eyes.
Webster, a talented fast bowler in Tasmanian cricket, displayed some strong athletic traits in his 12 touches.
Ultimately, though, the Croweaters enhanced their credentials and showed exactly why they are considered favourites to take out the under-18 title.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SOUTH Australian forward Troy Menzel put on another scintillating display, kicking six goals in his state's hard fought 29-point victory over the Northern Territory at Norwood Oval on Sunday.
South Australia had to withstand a five-goal-to-one final term from the Thunder to win 16.13 (109) to 12.8 (80) in round two of the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
Click here for full Under-18s coverage
Following up his nine-goal haul against Tasmania last week, Menzel, the younger brother of Geelong's Daniel, was again a dangerous commodity up forward for the Croweaters.
Rebounding defender Sam Colquhoun, from SANFL club Central District, was also influential with 36 possessions—his second solid game in a row.
AIS/AFL academy graduate Ben Kennedy had 29 possessions, mixing time up forward and through the midfield, and ruckman Brodie Grundy had 36 hit-outs to further boost his draft stocks.
The Northern Territory were gallant in defeat, in particular Jake Neade (23 touches) and Jed Anderson (17 and six tackles).
Livewire Thunder forward Anthony Tipungwuti also proved a handful for the opposition with 17 touches and two goals, to go along with seven tackles.
However, despite the Thunder's strong endeavour, they gave the South Australians too much of a head start early in the game and failed to bridge the gap in the last quarter.
The South Australians spread the workload effectively and will go in to next week's game against Vic Metro with plenty of confidence.

No.1 draft prospect Whitfield stars for Vic Country

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
POSSIBLE No. 1 NAB AFL Draft pick Lachie Whitfield put on a football clinic to lead Vic Country to a 94-point thrashing of Queensland at Visy Park on Sunday.
Whitfield collected 27 disposals, took 10 marks and kicked three goals in a best on ground display for Country as it won 15.15 (105) to 1.5 (11) in their NAB AFL Under-18 Championships clash.
His aerobic capacity, one of the best ever tested at the draft combine, was on full show as he covered the ground with ease and ran his opponents into the ground.
Click here for full Under-18s coverage
Teammate Oliver Wines demonstrated his wide array of talent with 31 possessions, five clearances and seven inside 50s.
Wines distributed the ball effectively all day and his cleanness in first gathering and then retaining the football stood out all game.
Talented 17-year-old Victorians Lewis Taylor (26 touches) and James Tsitas (24) were also prominent in the victory.
Queensland struggled to work the ball past its own forward 50 and Country had almost 100 more disposals than its opponents.
Isaac Conway (14 disposals and six tackles) and Jermaine Wardle (13 and six tackles) both worked hard for Queensland.
But Country thoroughly outclassed the Scorpions and had too much firepower for its opponents.

Vic Metro pair bag a half-dozen as Tassie tamed

---------------------------------------------------------------------
SIX-GOAL hauls from forwards Kristian Jaksch and Jackson Macrae have powered Vic Metro to a 96-point pummelling of Tasmania at Visy Park on Sunday.
Welcoming an injection of talent into the line-up that lost to division two side Northern Territory two weeks ago, Vic Metro was far too strong, winning 21.11 (137) to 6.5 (41).
Jaksch and Macrae, both from the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup, were instrumental.
Jaksch can play at both ends of the ground as a key-position player and is a superb mark in contested and uncontested situations.
The 17-year-old has already been compared to Essendon's Michael Hurley and his powerful kicking boot was on full display against Tasmania.
Macrae, who usually plays on the wing or at half-back, also showed his versatility by pushing forward and using the ball effectively with polished skills.
Nathan Hrovat (32 touches), Jacob Ballard (28), Nick Vlastuin (28) and Nick Haynes (26) were other players to push their names in front of recruiters with strong games.
For Tasmania, defender Jackson Thurlow amassed 45 disposals and 11 rebound 50s to be his side's best.
Teammate Calen Jeffery followed up his strong outing against South Australia last weekend with another 30 touches.
Metro kept the Mariners to just one inside 50 in the third quarter and the constant flurry of entries from Metro proved too difficult to handle.

Former Croweater dazzles for WA
By Ben Guthrie
Sat 09 Jun, 2012
WESTERN AUSTRALIA 3.3 7.7 12.11 14.17 (101)
NSW/ACT 1.2 3.3 4.4 5.5 (35)

NSW/ACT: Williams, Robinson, Hargreave, Harper, McGillivray
----------------------------------------------------------------
WEST Australian Josh Simpson completed his comeback after a badly broken collarbone to play a starring role with 20 disposals and three goals in his state's 66-point thumping of NSW/ACT.
Western Australia posted its first win of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Joondalup Arena on Saturday, after losing to Queensland by four points last weekend.
They won 14.17 (101) to 5.5 (35).
Simpson spent almost two months on the sidelines following a heavy collision playing with East Fremantle in the WAFL in April.
But he was fit and firing against the Rams, displaying some key overlap run and efficient ball use for his home state.
After a stint at Adelaide's prestigious Rostrevor College, the 18-year-old recently moved back to Western Australia to be closer to his family, who hail from Geraldton.
The South Australian under-18 program managers were bitterly disappointed to lose Simpson, who gave a glimpse of his talent for the state in last year's championships.
Western Australia made the Rams pay for a number of misguided turnovers, slicing them open with a strong work ethic and sharing the ball effectively.
Sean Lynch (24 disposals), Dayle Garlett (20) and Jack Martin (20) were all instrumental in the Sandgropers' win.
For NSW/ACT, Tom Hargreave (26) and Zac Williams (20) did their utmost to lift their side.
But the Rams' poor disposal led to frequent turnovers, which would have frustrated coach Jason Saddington.

Draft hopefuls get another day in the sun
Emma Quayle
The Age
June 15, 2012
Under-18s get to strut their stuff this weekend.
ESSENDON father-son draftee Joe Daniher will play his first game for Vic Metro in the under-18 championships this weekend, as another AFL relative stands in the way of Metro's back-to-back title hopes.
Troy Menzel, the younger brother of Geelong's Daniel, has kicked 15 goals in South Australia's opening two matches of the five-round series, including nine against Tasmania two weeks ago, the day after Daniel sustained his major knee injury.
Menzel, one of the most intriguing players in this year's draft pool given he had LARS surgery almost two years ago on his knee, had four goals on the board early in the second quarter of last Sunday's game against the Northern Territory before finishing with six.
He has played as a half-forward in this series, but was playing on a wing when he injured his non-preferred right leg playing for the SA under-16 team in July 2010.
''He's playing really well and he's doing everything right,'' said South Australian coach Brenton Phillips. ''He's been taking contested marks, he's marking on the lead and getting the ball off the ground. That's what's made him so damaging.
''He puts himself in the right positions and the right times, and it's hard to coach that type of thing.''
Daniher will join a Metro side sitting in third spot on the championships table, toppled in round one by the Northern Territory but beating Tasmania comprehensively last Sunday.
A loss to SA would make a title win very difficult for Metro, which didn't drop a match in last year's championships, the team featuring nine first-round draftees, including top five picks Jon Patton, Dom Tyson and Will Hoskin-Elliott.
After two rounds, Vic Country leads the championships by percentage from South Australia, with both sides having comfortably won both clashes with second division sides.
Western Australia, Vic Metro, Northern Territory and Queensland are on one win, while neither Tasmania nor NSW/ACT are yet to record a win.
With all division one sides having played two games against division two teams, the competition now moves into its final three rounds, with Metro playing South Australia in Adelaide on Saturday and Western Australia hosting Vic Country on Sunday.
Luke McDonald, North Melbourne's 2013 father-son pick in waiting, is expected to return to the Metro midfield after missing game two, while South Australia will be without captain Jimmy Toumpas. A likely high pick and already a premiership player for Woodville-West Torrens, Toumpas injured a hip against the Northern Territory and may miss the final two rounds in Melbourne in two weeks.
SA is expected to produce a bunch of top-end draftees this year, with ruckman Brodie Grundy, Sam Mayes and Ben Kennedy also considered likely first-rounders.
No. 1 pick-in-waiting Lachie Whitfield will play his second game for Vic Country against WA, after starring on Sunday with a 27-possession, three-goal game.
Teammate Ollie Wines racked up 31 possessions to push his claims for a top-three spot at this year's draft, with the first round likely to be dominated by midfielders.

STERLING performances from Victorian duo Jack Billings and Nathan Hrovat helped carry Vic Metro to an 18-point win over U18 rival South Australia at Alberton Oval on Saturday.
Hrovat turned in a dynamic display in the midfield with 34 disposals and 17-year-old Billings booted five goals in round three of the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
Metro kicked six goals to two in the first quarter to set up the result, holding on to win 16.7 (103) to 12.13 (85).
Exceptional toughness at the contest and an ability to work overtime in the middle were features of Hrovat's game.
Among the standouts for Vic Metro were teammates Josh Kelly (21 touches) and potential North Melbourne father/son pick Luke McDonald.
Billings is a classy left-footer in the mould of St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo and his five-goal haul suggested he will be high on recruiter's lists come draft day next year.
South Australia's Matthew Scharenberg was another 17-year-old to impress recruiters. He showed poise in a stellar game across half-back, where he picked up 25 disposals.
Teammate Matthew McDonough was a focal point up forward early, keeping his team in the contest by booting five first-half goals.
McDonough stands just 180cm tall but is accurate in front of the sticks and finished with six goals to be one of the Croweaters' strongest performers.
At the other end of the spectrum, ruckman Brodie Grundy (three goals) stepped up to kick two pivotal goals before three-quarter time to ensure his side remained within striking distance.
Two late withdrawals hurt SA's chances: in-form forward Troy Menzel (younger brother of Geelong's Daniel) and midfield jet Jimmy Toumpas.

Mini-draft prospects shine

POSSIBLE Greater Western Sydney mini-draft prospects Jack Martin and Jesse Hogan played starring roles in Western Australia's upset win over Vic Country at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.
WA held off a fast-finishing Country outfit to record an 18-point win, 13.14 (92) to 11.8 (74), throwing wide open the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
The classy Martin displayed his quality with 23 disposals, two goals and nine tackles, while Hogan finished with three majors.
Both players qualify for the GWS mini-draft; a trade incentive for other AFL clubs to swap draft picks or experienced players with the Giants in exchange for a gun youngster.
Players who qualify must be ineligible to be drafted in 2012 and born between January 1 and April 30, 1995.
Gold Coast has already secured boom youngster Jaeger O'Meara in a trade with the Giants, while Adelaide pounced on Victorian product Brad Crouch last year.
Martin is regarded as a rare talent and a left foot snap from the boundary on Sunday, tucked up against the boundary line, emphasised why he will be so highly sought after.
Hogan's strong contested marking came to the fore in the first half as he was almost unstoppable in the air.
Country defender Darcy Gardiner was moved on to Hogan to try to quell his influence, and did well to shut out the dangerous key forward in the second half.
Likely no.1 draft pick Lachie Whitfield (27 touches and three goals) was forced to do it all as Country struggled to find avenues to goal.
Taylor Garner (20 disposals and three goals) was another standout for the visitors.

Anderson's class inspires NT

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SMOOTH-moving Northern Territory midfielder Jed Anderson emphasised his class with a standout performance in his state’s 83-point thumping of NSW/ACT at Blacktown on Saturday.
Northern Territory's 20.10 (130) to 6.11 (47) victory stemmed from its supremacy at the clearances in round three of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
A member of last year’s under-18 All Australian team as a bottom aged player, Anderson has added the key ingredient of work rate to his game this year.
The 18-year-old displayed an ability to work both ways with some strong gut running and his work ethic, blended with clean hands and smart finishing, makes him an exciting prospect.
Anderson finished with 23 disposals, three goals and eight tackles, while Jack McEwin (20 touches) and Jake Neade (18) were pivotal in the engine room.
Apart from a three-goal burst from the Rams at the start of the second quarter, the game was under the Thunder’s control from start to finish.
The Thunder’s stoppage work and their ability to pressure the opposition yielded numerous turnovers.
Their accuracy in front of goal was another highlight, underlined by 8.3 in the final term to close out the contest.
Rams forward Liam Flaherty kicked three goals and showed a good set of hands and Jedd Clothier (15 touches) worked hard all day, but the team could not stop the Thunder onslaught.

JORDON Bourke staked his claim as Geelong's next father/son recruit as Queensland narrowly failed to overhaul Tasmania in Saturday’s NAB AFL Under-18 Championships clash.
Bourke, the son of former Cat Damien, led his team to the brink of victory with a fantastic second half up forward for Queensland.
The Tasmanians, though, prevailed by eight points, winning 9.7 (61) to 6.17 (53) at Yeronga in Brisbane
Mitchell Van den Berg, 19, was Tasmania's dominant forward, kicking two goals to go along with 10 marks (five contested).
Van den Berg made the recruiters sit up and take notice, showing a clean pair of hands and athleticism to leap at the football.
Bourke has been on the Cats' radar for a while and his second-half performance almost hauled his side over the line.
The 17-year-old, who is eligible to be drafted this year, kicked 3.3 and took seven strong marks. But for inaccuracy he would have led his team to victory.
The Queenslanders dominated possessions (317-288) and inside 50s (52-35), but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard.
Andrew Boston (28 touches) featured prominently on the wing for Queensland, while Isaac Conway hauled in 27 disposals in the middle.
Jesse Lonergan, the nephew of Essendon's Sam, also showed positive signs in his return from a knee injury for Tasmania.

VIC METRO has held off rival Vic Country by 15-points in a spirited round three encounter in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Simonds Stadium on Friday.
The teams were all square on 6.14 (50) at three-quarter time before Metro's Jonathan O'Rourke snapped truly to break the deadlock early in the final term.
Country battled manfully to work the ball forward for the rest of the quarter, but a 50m penalty and resultant goal from Metro's Lachlan Hunter with just minutes remaining snuffed out that challenge.
Metro ball-magnet Nathan Hrovat displayed vision and poise in congested situations, as he collected 21 disposals to be amongst the best.
Tom Temay's positioning at half-back for Metro was also noteworthy, finishing with a game-high 24 touches and acting as a conduit between attack and defence.
Both teams struggled to adjust to the windy conditions in Geelong, which led to inaccuracy in front of goal and some wasteful use of the ball.
Metro key forward Thomas Boyd provided a strong presence up forward with three goals.
Possible GWS mini draft prospect and Metro forward Josh Kelly gathered 19 disposals, as his decision-making under pressure set him apart.
Country's Matt Crouch, brother of Adelaide's Brad, laid seven tackles for the game to go along with 18 touches to be one of his side's best.
That mantle, though, belonged to teammate Oliver Wines, who continued an impressive carnival with an unrelenting attack on the ball to finish with 18 touches, six tackles and a goal.
Country defender Mason Wood (13 disposals) also showed an ability to chop off attacking moves from Metro.
Although it was not enough, as O'Rourke, whose spread from the contest was important, stepped up at the right time to help deliver his side a hard fought victory.

Was impressed with Lynch from WA. Read the play well and pretty good skilss
-
I thought Colquhoun, Mayes, Scharenberg and Montgomery looked like players for SA. I was a bit disappointed in Kennedy. Grundy should go to GWS or GCS in the first two picks of the draft, Toumpas was very good also and will also go very high in the draft. I think Aish is next year - he looks to have great ability. SA have produced a really good crop of youngsters IMHO. WA also had a couple of boys that seemed to have good ability like Hogan, Garlett and Simpson.

Here's the official match report from the AFL website...
Croweaters savage WA
By Jason Phelan
Fri 29 Jun, 2012
(http://mm.afl.com.au/Portals/0/1_U18WASA12DT%20282.jpg)
Matt Scharenberg was among the best for SA in the big win over WA on Friday
UNFLAPPABLE South Australian defender Sam Colquhoun carved Western Australia to shreds with a game-high 32 disposals, to lead his state to a decisive 50-point victory at Simonds Stadium on Friday.
South Australia's precise ball movement and overlap run proved too difficult to handle in round four of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, as it won 12.12 (84) to 4.10 (34).
Colquhoun has been one of the most outstanding performers of the carnival and he dazzled recruiters with a best on ground display on Friday.
The 17-year-old has a unique ability to think through all sorts of scenarios and consider 'what-if' situations by continually moving to contests.
Colquhoun owned the defensive half of the ground, with his 31 touches including 24 uncontested possessions and a staggering 17 handball receives.
South Australia managed to set up a steady flow of players to stream through the corridor, as they ran with purpose to create and support for teammates.
Using such an aggressive style of play allowed the Croweaters to dictate terms from the outset, with forward Matthew McDonough capitalising on some crisp inside 50 entries to boot six goals.
The team had a strong support cast with James Aish (25 disposals, seven inside 50s), Matthew Scharenberg (24) and Trent Dumont (21) all impressing.
For Western Australia, Dayle Garlett (six inside 50s) was exciting for periods of the game - highlighted by a goal tucked from deep in the left forward pocket - and Sean Lynch (22) toiled away, while Nicholas Rodda (17) was valiant in defence.
But Western Australia had few players who won their positions, as South Australians made a strong statement with a convincing win.

Tassie's title tilt

--------------------------------------------------------------------
TASMANIA has put itself in the box seat to close out the division two NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with a comfortable 41-point victory against NSW/ACT at Visy Park on Saturday.
The Tasmanians were too slick and too polished for the NSW/ACT side who, to their credit, battled hard to the end.
But inaccuracy in front of goal cost the Rams, and the start they gave to the Tasmanians proved too much to overhaul as they won 14.7 (91) to 6.14 (50).
Tasmania kicked eight goals in the first half to all but ensure victory, as the Rams managed a measly 2.8.
Forward Brennon Kendall booted five goals for Tasmania, while Jarrod Hibberd (18 touches) and Calen Jeffery (17) were tough in and under.
Bryce Walsh had a game-high 22 disposals and two goals to continue his impressive carnival, Jackson Thurlow (17) acted as the distributor from half back and Sam O'Byrne bobbed up with two goals as well.
Jesse Lonergan, nephew of Essendon's Sam, was handy with two goals and 15 possessions in his second game back from a knee injury and Toby Nankervis dominated in the ruck with 34 hit-outs.
Despite Tasmania's early dominance, the Rams managed to peg the margin back to within 14 points midway through the third term with a stretch that saw them slam on three unanswered goals.
Rams forward Caleb Vearing was pivotal in the mini comeback and Samuel Clyne (19 disposals) was consistent throughout the game.
Sydney Swans scholarship holder Daniel Robinson gathered 15 disposals to be amongst the best for the Rams.
The result sets up a fascinating finish to division two with the title race still up in the air.
If Tasmania wins against Northern Territory next Thursday they clinch the title, but if the Thunder wins it comes down to percentage.
Likewise, if Queensland defeats the Rams (and the Thunder beats Tasmania) next Thursday, the winner of the title is determined by percentage again.

QUEENSLAND has kept its division two title hopes in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships alive, after holding off the Northern Territory by seven points at Visy Park on Saturday.
The scores were tied at 48 apiece at three quarter-time before Queensland found the upper hand in the final term to kick four goals to three to sew up the victory.
The Scorpions won 11.8 (74) to the Thunder's 10.7 (67).
Queensland's key forwards Jordon Bourke and Cain Tickner outsized the Thunder defence to provide definitive targets and were the impetus for the win.
Tickner's workrate to continually present to the ball carrier was impressive, as he finished with 14 touches and a goal.
While Bourke, who can be taken by Geelong as a father/son pick (as son of Damian) this year, showed an ability to extend his arms and take a couple of clean grabs, finishing with five marks and three goals.
With Bourke and Tickner laying the foundations up forward, Brian Coleman-Broom booted three goals and showed clean hands when gathering the ball at pace.
At the other end of the ground, the Thunder could not quite compete in the size department but they managed to find other avenues to goal.
Thunder forward Jarrod Stokes was a bundle of energy up forward with three goals, Sam Autio did some creative things (two goals) and Jack Williams also ended up with two.
The Thunder's Jed Anderson delivered a couple of bone-rattling tackles to go along with his 15 touches.
While for Queensland James Smith gathered 22 disposals and midfielder Andrew Boston's spread from the contest and expert ball use stood out amongst his 17 disposals.
It was goal for goal for much of the final term with momentum swaying backwards and forwards.
Until Coleman-Broom stamped himself on the game with a blazing goal hurtling through the forward 50 and then Jermaine Wardle closed proceedings as the Scorpions held on in a tense final few minutes.

VIC METRO has claimed back-to-back division one titles after holding off a fast finishing Western Australia by 24 points in the final round of the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
After South Australia defeated Vic Country by 13 points in the earlier game, Metro needed to defeat WA to ensure it clinched the title.
The task looked like it would be a relatively simple one after Metro slammed home nine first half goals, but it had to scrap and fight as the Sandgropers came roaring back in to the contest in the second half.
Metro, though, steadied to eventually win 14.12 (96) to 10.12 (72).
Essendon father/son prospect Joe Daniher, son of Anthony, booted four goals and hauled in 11 marks in an unstoppable aerial display for Metro, showing a strong ability to take the ball at its highest point.
The Bombers have already committed to drafting Daniher this year and he gave an exciting glimpse of his talent, despite being inaccurate in front of the big sticks to finish with 4.6.
The father/son talent was not just limited to the Bombers, as potential Melbourne father/son pick Jack Viney (18 disposals) worked hard in the engine room for Metro.
Metro’s Jackson Macrae (21), Jonathan O’Rourke (18) and Nick Vlastuin (16) all boosted their credentials.
For Western Australia, exciting GWS mini draft prospect Jack Martin (19 touches, three goals and six inside 50s) was pivotal in his state’s stunning comeback, as they cut the half-time margin of 41 points to just 16 points early in the fourth quarter.
Laine Wilkins (four goals) and burly forward Jesse Hogan (seven marks), who is also eligible for the GWS mini draft, helped complement Martin’s key overlap run.
But Metro’s fast start was the difference, as they had enough in the tank to fend off WA’s demanding challenge.

SOUTH Australia fell agonisingly short of clinching the division one title in the final round of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, despite hanging on to a 13-point victory over Vic Country at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
The South Australians did everything in their power to heap pressure on Vic Metro, who needed to beat Western Australia in the final game to lock up the title.
But Metro took care of business to triumph as overall winners in division one.
South Australia held a slim four-point half-time lead in an enthralling battle against Vic Country, before its classy players did just enough to carry their side to a 13.4 (82) to 10.9 (69) victory.
South Australian midfielder Ben Kennedy was a bundle of energy through the midfield and up forward, collecting an impressive 26 disposals, eight inside 50s and two goals.
Possible top five draft pick Jimmy Toumpas won the ball inside and outside the contest to finish with 26 touches and 15 handball receives.
Ruckman Brodie Grundy was a dominant force in the middle, chalking up 20 hit-outs and then showed an ability to push forward to kick three goals.
Matthew McDonough was also dangerous with his three goals for the Croweaters.
Vic Country kept pace with South Australia in the first half as it tried to limit the prolific outside run of its opponents.
Likely No.1 draft pick Lachie Whitfield gathered 26 disposals, two goals and 10 inside 50s.
Key forward Tim Membrey booted four goals for Country and showed he could hold his strength in marking contests, as Lewis Taylor (21 touches) became the benefactor on loose scraps in the forward line.
The Croweaters’ running players negated Country’s close down tactics in the second half, as defender Sam Colquhoun (24 touches and 13 handball receives) ran riot.
This enabled them to set up their favoured open style, as they set up their chain of runners through the middle which became a strong element in their eventual win.

Lachie Whitfield wins Larke Medal, firms as No.1
By Jason Phelan
7:32 PM Wed 04 Jul, 2012
(http://mm.afl.com.au/Portals/0/whitb.jpg)
VIC COUNTRY star Lachie Whitfield has taken out the 2012 Larke Medal on the same night rivals Vic Metro made it back-to-back division one titles at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
Metro started its campaign with a shock loss to the Northern Territory in Darwin back in May and needed to defeat Western Australia to claim its sixth division one title since 2004 after nearest rivals South Australia edged out Vic Country in the first game at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
The Sandgropers made the Victorians work hard, but Metro rallied to a 24-point win that secured national honours.
After defeating NSW/ACT and Queensland in the inter-divisional rounds that kicked off the championships, Country failed to notch a win in three matches against division one opponents.
While he was proud to receive the Larke Medal, awarded to the best player in division one, Whitfield had hoped for greater team success.
"With Stephen Coniglio winning it last year and seeing him get his career off to a great start, it is nice to win it, but I'm still disappointed we didn't win a division one game with the boys," Whitfield said.
"But as we saw, Vic Metro played really well and deserved the win in the end.
"There are a lot of great names [who have won the Larke Medal] who have forged really good careers, so it's good to be amongst them."
Whitfield was also named Country's most valuable player of the championships, the same award he picked up last year as a bottom-age player.
Prolific ball winner Sam Colquhoun took out the award for SA and inside midfielder Nathan Hrovat did the same for Vic Metro.
Bottom-aged prospect Jack Martin was WA's MVP, which will only serve to enhance his credentials as a target for AFL clubs in the GWS mini-draft.
Whitfield's performances across the national carnival helped cement his position as the likely No.1 draft pick this year, but he was just delighted to have gained valuable experience from his second and final championships.
"It's just awesome," he said.
"It's really good to make new friendships and learn from the coaches. Mark Ellis, our senior coach, is a very knowledgeable man, so it's a really good experience.
"It's a solid few weeks, but it does give you an insight into how the AFL might be. We get treated as professionals by all the staff and everyone involved."
The division two title will be decided on Thursday when NT takes on Tasmania and Queensland goes up against NSW/ACT at Simonds Stadium in Geelong.

NORTHERN Territory has taken out the division two title at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships after a come-from-behind 24-point win against Tasmania at Simonds Stadium on Thursday.
Queensland could have spoiled the Thunder's party with a triple-digit win against NSW/ACT in the final game of the carnival, but the Scorpions could only manage a 28-point victory, which saw NT claim its first national crown since 2004.
The Tasmanians got off to a flyer and led at the first two breaks, but NT edged in front late in the third quarter then powered away to a 9.9 (63) to 5.9 (39) win in slippery conditions in Geelong.

Ben Rioli led the way for NT with 19 disposals across half-back with Jake Neade (18) and Dom Barry (17) also important.
Jesse Lonergan was impressive for Tasmania with 15 possessions and two goals, while Jarrod Hibberd gathered 18 possessions.
Tasmania kicked four goals in the first quarter to open up an early lead, but managed just one more for the entire match.
Willy Rioli kicked a superb goal from theboundary line after the quarter-time siren to keep the Thunder within striking distance, but Tasmania still held an 11-point lead at half-time.
Jed Anderson put NT in front with his goal two minutes before three-quarter time and teammate Dom Barry stretched the advantage to nine points with a long goal after the siren.
The title was still in reach for Tasmania in the final term, but Roy Assan and Jarrod Stokes scored the only majors for the quarter, which ended in jubilation for the Thunder boys.

QUEENSLAND has defeated the NSW/ACT Rams by 28 points in the final game of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Simonds Stadium on Thursday.
The Scorpions finished the carnival with the same number of division two wins as the Northern Territory and Tasmania and could have snatched the title from the Thunder's grasp with a 100 points-plus win, but had to settle for the 10.7 (67) to 6.3 (39) result.
Queensland captain Andrew Boston was the architect of the win with 23 possessions and a goal, with Blake Grewar and James Ives also important with 15 touches each.
Michael Gibbons led the way for the Rams with 25 disposals, while Daniel Robinson and Zac Williams managed 17 possessions apiece.
The huge win necessary to claim the national crown looked a tall task from the outset as the plucky Rams established a three-point lead at the first break.
Clay Cameron finally gave Queensland the lead with his goal late in the second quarter, but Caleb Vearing put NSW/ACT back in front at half-time with a goal in the last minute.
That would be the Rams' last goal of the match, however, with Daniel VanDeWerken, who finished with three goals, and Geelong father-son prospect Jordon Bourke combining well in attack to seal the win for the Scorpions.

NT doubles up
By Jason Phelan
Thu 05 Jul, 2012
THE NORTHERN Territory has pulled off a rare double in claiming the division two title at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with Thunder onballer Jake Neade also taking out the HC Harrison Medal.
NT started off its campaign with a shock first-ever win against Vic Metro in Darwin back in May and won its first national title since 2004 by virtue of its superior percentage compared with Queensland and Tasmania, with all three teams finishing on two wins and one loss in division two.
Jed Anderson was named NT's most valuable player, while Jackson Thurlow (Tasmania), Zac Williams (NSW/ACT) and Andrew Boston (Queensland) all took out their respective state's award.
