Shocking defensive turnover by Willy. Their defender kicked it sideways straight to Bolton directly in front 35 out. Floats back nicely for a goal  :gotigers.

Down to two on the bench at the moment. Silvestro getting stitches to just above his right eye.

Good defensive mark by Garthwaite stops the Willy attack. We get a stoppage at HF. Ballard's mongrel torpedo is marked 30 out by Stengle. Goal  :gotigers

Top mark reaching above the contest by Naish. Goes wide to Arts on the wing. Inside 50 to CJ's lead to the boundary but it's spoiled for a throw-in. Forward pressure creating multiple stoppages. Willy's clearing kick marked by Coffield 70 out. Goes long. lloyd snaps but it trickls for a throw-in by the point post. Rushed through for a point.

19 - 2

Another to them. Pretty loose defending on transition by us. Started with a poor overcooked kick inside our F50 that split to Tiger forwards and found the Willy defender.

Another poor overcooked kick by Ballard. Willy clear but we get it back via Stengle. Goes long to the pocket but's spoiled in the pack for a throw-in 20 out.

Willy clear and we lose a 2-v-1 on the wing (CJ too easily pushed aside). Willy go forward and Bolton is pinged for HTB. Goal to them.

Blind handball in the corridor only 20 out from their goal by Bathie straight to a Willy forward but lucky they miss.

3 speedsters work together. Rioli keeps the ball in front of him and the chasing Willy defenders along the wing. Gets it to Bolton who hits up Stengle on the lead 25 out. Misses the set shot though.

That's the siren.

Quarter time

Richmond       3.2-20
Williamstown  3.4-22

Goals: Bolton, Stengle, Townsend.

No one yet putting their hand up for senior selection. Garthwaite would come in for Astbury if he's ankle is still

So far a repeat of the seniors with out mids getting beaten badly in the contested footy and clearances especially in the last 15 mins of that first qtr.

Disposals:   61 - 93
Contested:  31 - 43
Uncontested: 31 - 48
Clearances: 6 - 15
Inside 50s:  13 - 11

Dimma talking to Rioli at 1/4 time.

Lloyd with just 3 possies.

CJ is acquitting himself very well early. 11 hit-outs - 7 to advantage.

Mannagh's kick out of D50 went straight to an opponent. Then Coffield kicks it OOTF. Fortunately they miss.

Benny Hill stuff by both sides under pressure in the last few minutes.

From the throw-in. Bolton out of the ruck and almost kicks one of the goals of the year. Goal umpire says it was touched before the whole ball crossed the line. Not obvious it was touched before it crossed.

Too many are very panicky.

Those that look (from what I see) composed; Rioli, Townsend, Hayward, Garthwaite, C. Ellis. Stengle.

Yep. Rioli & Townsend should be ins for the senior side next week.

Willy's pressure and attack on the footy has been very good to be fair. Best VFL opposition we've faced this year. Durnell (sp?) is having a day out.

Agree too many of our VFL listed players have been ordinary today.

Rioli classy hands to Ellis but his kick spreads wide of Stengle and it's a throw-in. Willy clear but we get it back and Naish pumps it inside 50. Ball-up. Wily clearing kick is marked by Balta. Loads up inside 50 again. Willy clearing goes to a 2-v-1 but Ballard and Naish muck it up 45m out and the Willy one wins out and clear.

Willy get it inside their forward 50 but Bolton clears. We get it forward and Stengle gets the free for HTB. On the angle in the pocket. Misses.

Disappointing qtr.

Lost the plot

And with what seems to be the norm this week; too many players MIA

Willy have been smart though. They know to get Hayward one out in their F50 and they will get a very simple mark

Willy deserve the win.

Our blokes (except a few) look like they arent full time footy players more so than the willy players.

Defenders ldon’t want to punch for some reason and we don’t look like taking a mark inside f50.

Reckon this is the most VFL listed blokes we've had playing this season and shows.

Though, that doesn't excuse the efforts of the likes of Bolton, Lloyd to name 2

Dumb dumb dumb.

Aarts, you shepherd and allow Balta to gather and run with the ball. Would have been an easy inside 50 instead of a turnover.

Lloyd kick out of defence straight to a Willy player in the corridor. Turnover.

They miss but then get it back and goal. Not good signs!

It was pretty garbage all round, I think the female ump was just more noticeable so she gets singled out but it was evenly poo. I think we got ripped off with holding the ball a lot. So many tackles we laid would have at least been rewarded in AFL.

We were as bad as the umps.

You don't deserve win when you get smashed in contested footy and clearances (esp. centre clearances). Really missed Soldo big time today.

Most of our VFL listed players had shockers while disappointingly many of our AFL-listed didn't fire a shot despite knowing senior spots were on the line after our loss to Port.

Rioli and Towner would be the only ones deserving of a senior spot.

Rings a bell, and being up there with scoring from clearances too. Wasn't it we kicked it to the pocket so if it went out we were a good chance of scoring from the stoppage? Foley and Tuck were pretty rough around the edges but they were good at winning that ball. Without Prestia too much falls on to Cotch and Dusty. This is probably where Graham needs to lift. He can be great at applying pressure but playing at the coal face he's going to have to start winning some ball.

Let’s not pot an female umpire because she’s a girl?
Everyone watching where I was were laughing at her decisions as she was terrible, blind Freddie could see it and even my blues mate was shaking his head. Can’t deny it because We could hear her voice through the tv speakers.

I’m guessing it’s because she’s used to umpiring the chicks games and she’s instructed to pay marks that aren’t marks or pay agreesive tackles as sling tackles.  :rollin

What I will say in her defence was that she was clearly the best centre bouncer on the field. Unfortunately she couldn’t make correct decisions on most occasions.

It's not about gender, don't know why you and everyone else have made it about gender

Overall I thought ump 22 was thw worst of the 3. Number 14 was hopeless, ditto number 8. Gender has nothing to do with it. The 3 of them were insipid but IMV number 22 was the worst

Funnily enough where I was sitting all the Willy supoorters were potting her even they got what 3-4 in row in the 3rd. For one decision they went off their collective noodles because she didn't give them 50. For one of them they didnt realise number14 was a woman until half way through the last quarter  :lol

Whether it’s seniors or magoos we can’t buy a clearance. 8 points down we needed to win that one in the centre, instead space opens up and the opposition clear it.

i could be wrong but wasnt it a few years ago when we were right up with clearances?

Rings a bell, and being up there with scoring from clearances too. Wasn't it we kicked it to the pocket so if it went out we were a good chance of scoring from the stoppage? Foley and Tuck were pretty rough around the edges but they were good at winning that ball. Without Prestia too much falls on to Cotch and Dusty. This is probably where Graham needs to lift. He can be great at applying pressure but playing at the coal face he's going to have to start winning some ball.

we miss prestia big time. its as obvious as the eye can see and our wins against cella dwellers have hidden that big crack.

Big game this week. Our biggest for the year IMO given the ladder.

CCJ has a great leap

With experience he will start clunking those grabs and then look out

Interesting your comments about Naish; The Machine, I was disappointed. Thought he appeared way of the pace at times. A very nice kick but worried about other parts of his game, especially the reading of the play. Probably expecting too much too soon? As i posted earlier can't see him palying AFL this year, long term prospect which is good thing

Again, interesting re Bolton, didnt like his game today. I get agitated when blokes wont chase. A number of times today he wouldn't chase. Did some nice things but overall I was disappointed

Funny that on the TV, it looked like Bolton had several chases and tackles and was one of our bests. Go figure. I'd like to see the stats.

The sling tackle was plainly the worst decision. It was just so wrong it's not even funny.

How can you even be allowed to umpire when you do not even know the rules?

Correct
Watched on TV
The girl umpire was embarrassing
Guess work used on many occasions
The sling tackle was a joke
As for marks that were paid and weren’t there
Laughable
Cameron Brown gave her a decent whack on Channel
7
Don’t think the players took her serious either
Shocking display !!!
And I don’t bag Umpires but today was laughable

Bests for me were

Townsend
Stengle
Rioli
Bolton
CEllis

Can see Towno and Rioli coming back in next week - hopefully wombat gets the nod too, deserves a shot.  Garthwaite ready to step up if required to replace Astbury

The sheila was as useless as t@s on a field umpire of men's footy.... :shh

With Astbury injured Garthwaite sure picked a fine time to have his first real shocker....

Bolton - seems to be working harder and always loks dangerous but still too much style and not enough substance for mine...seems almost incapable of simple percentage play...these are not exhibition matches son...:shh

My boy Baker very disappointing......

Townsend arguably our best....

CEllis probably next best but still doesn't fill me confidence....

Miller....see Baker......(no pun intended)...

Naish....kid shows he can play but still a long way away....

Lloyd...meh....who cares....

Stengle is the no frills vesrion of the player Bolton should be.... :shh

CCJ still miles from rucking in the VFL let alone the AFL as expected at his age...looked promising around the ground but would 've been nice if could've actually kicked it to his own players every now & then...

Balta out of his depth for theee quarters , BOG for one...you'll get that with prodigous talents from time to time...

No Rioli next week at eiher level ...don't stuff around & tempt fae with foot injuries...save him for adfter the bye...need him in August & September not June & July...  :shh

23rd man Thompson showed some nice glimpses.... :shh

Aarts & Ballard best of the VFL blokes....

In sum: Forward entries & clearences replicated the seniors so no surprise the result did too...both frustratingly stupid losses to clearly inferior sides that, even taking the incompetant officiating and falling asleep for a quarter into account, we still should've beaten comfortably and going away.. .... :shh

Daniel Rioli limped off during the fourth quarter with an ankle problem, but returned to finish out the game.

Rioli is likely to come under strong consideration for Richmond’s round 13 clash with Geelong after another strong showing in the VFL.

Playing his fourth game back, Rioli finished with two goals and 15 possessions in the 12-point loss.

Sam Lloyd was unusually quiet, kept to just 15 possessions, and was reported.

Shai Bolton  had 14 possessions, kicked two goals and took a screamer in the final term.

Jacob Townsend also booted two majors (and had 14 touches).

VFL Tigers fall to Williamstown

Brenton Mann
AFL media
June 10, 2018 5:39 PM

“Individual commitment to a group effort: that is what makes a team work.”

Words of NFL icon, Vince Lomardi when discussing what it takes to be defensively imperious.

Williamstown and Richmond laid claim to being the top-two defensive outfits in the VFL this year going into round 10, both giving up just nine-goals a game on average in 2018.

An arm-wrestle was nigh guaranteed on Sunday at Williamstown Football Ground, when the Tigers attempted to topple the Seagulls for the first time, in a long time.

The Tigers and Seagulls fought out an absolute classic, with Williamstown prevailing, 12.11 (83) to 10.11 (71).

The Tigers hadn’t beaten the Seagulls since re-entering the competition, and went about rectifying that on a rare, windless day at the sun-drenched Point Gellibrand.

The Tigers burst out of the blocks with the opening three majors to Shai Bolton, Tyson Stengle and Jacob Townsend, before the Seagulls hit back with venom.

Any thoughts of Richmond pulling away from their less fancied hosts were quashed when Williamstown slammed on three majors of its own to finish the first term.

Dominant Tiger ruckman, Ivan Soldo was a late exclusion, which left the majority of the rucking duties on the shoulders of youngster, Callum Coleman-Jones.

Coleman-Jones relished the early responsibility, showing poise beyond his years, to lead his midfield with purpose and flair. The budding ruckman finished the day with 17 disposals, 32 hit-outs and four clearances, in what was a pleasing display.

The Tigers bench was cut in half for large chunks of the opening term, when Oleg Markov (knee) and Tom Silvestro (cut eye) left the ground in the hands of the trainers. Markov injured his knee in the opening minute of the game and didn’t return, while Silvestro re-emerged after some running repairs.

Young bull, Charlie Thompson (jaw) and goal-sneak, Tyson Stengle (ribs) also left the field to be assessed by the trainers in what was a willing opening half.

At times, Richmond’s bench resembled the emergency ward of a local hospital, with the medical staff kept busy for most of the day.

Richmond wrestled back the lead early in the second term via some brilliant work by Stengle, Daniel Rioli and Jacob Townsend, before Williamstown hit back.

The pressure gauge neared boiling point, as both sides harassed, scrapped, stalked and mauled their opposition.

The Tigers’ class rose to the top in the back-end of the second term.

Firstly, Coleman-Jones fended-off a Seagulls’ defender in the goal-square, before deftly palming the ball down to Charlie Thompson, as the young-gun snapped through his debut goal.

Corey Ellis then cruised out of congestion, accepted a handball, hit 35 and speared through his first for the day, handing the Tigers’ a slight four-point lead at halftime.

Six lead changes in the first half, and it was like finals footy in June.

The game went up another notch in the second half, with both sides throwing their weight around.

Sam Lloyd was reported after a bump on Williamstown’s, Lachlan Spark, which seemed to jolt the Seagulls into action.

Daniel Rioli coolly slotted the first goal of the second half, but Williamstown arrested back the ascendency on the back of three unanswered goals.

The Tigers struggled for the majority of the day to find a winner in the air forward of centre, as the Seagulls controlled the air in their defensive half.

Williamstown defender, Leigh Masters patrolled his back-50 with superiority and chopped off countless Tiger forays forward.

With the Seagulls clutching to an eight-point lead at the final change, the ball was in the Tigers’ court to strip Williamstown of its momentum and make a charge of its own.

The Seagulls started the better in the final term, with ill-discipline starting to creep into the Tigers’ game.

However, a Daniel Rioli goal against the tide sparked Richmond into action.

The young Tigers fought and scrounged right to the death, but every time they mounted a challenge, the Seagulls answered straight back, and eventually wore them down.

Jacob Townsend was a colossus, continually applying bone-jarring physical pressure, either up forward or through the midfield.
Townsend finished the day with two goals, 16 disposals and 11 tackles, while Corey Ellis tolied manfully to finish with 28 disposals, six clearances, seven tacklesa and a classy goal.

Late goals to Shai Bolton and Ryan Bathie cut the margin to 12 points, but it was ultimately, a bridge too far.

Williamstown laid down the challenge, and It was only a lack of polish and poise at critical times, which eventually cost the Tigers snagging victory.

VFL and development coach, Craig McRae's summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Sunday’s Round 10 match against Williamstown.

Corey Ellis

26 disposals, seven clearances, one goal and six tackles

“Corey was our most consistent player over four quarters, 26 disposals, seven clearances and a really classy goal. He is one player that can have his head held high for his performance. He had 13 contested possessions as well.”

Patrick Naish

18 disposals, four tackles, three inside-50s and five rebound-50s

“Played down back and is really learning how to defend consistently, sometimes he gets caught in-between. He’s improving, 18 disposals and I’d like to think we’re evolving him in different roles throughout his development, but it was an okay performance from Patrick.’

Daniel Rioli

16 disposals, two goals, two clearances and two tackles

“Played his first full game for the season, kicked two goals—one in particular was a nice snap around his body, 16 disposals and a four-quarter performance. We’d like his tackle numbers to be a little higher, but he looked more ready for AFL football this week.”

Sam Lloyd

16 disposals, 12 contested possessions, seven tackles and four clearances

“Was heavily tagged, had to fight for everything he got. He was reported on the day and it will be interesting to see what happens there. He had 12 contested possessions out of 16 (disposals) so he had to earn everything he got, seven tackles was a feature.”

Callum Coleman-Jones

15 disposals, 35 hit-outs, four clearances and seven tackles

“Played in the ruck, with (Ivan) Soldo a late withdrawal. It was a good opportunity for him, he had 35 hit-outs, which is pleasing. He competed well around the ground, and had 15 disposals and shows that the future’s bright for him in that role.”

Jacob Townsend

14 disposals, 14 tackles, two goals and four marks

“14 tackles, two goals and looked really strong in the aerial part of the game as well. He played above the level in terms of his competitiveness.”

Shai Bolton

14 disposals, two goals, five tackles and four clearances

“Playing good football at VFL level. Only 14 disposals but had a little bit of a pinch-hit in the midfield and up forward. Eight contested possessions, five tackles and two goals is a good output. Also, a VFL mark of the year contender from a pretty spectacular catch.”

Tyson Stengle

11 disposals, six tackles, one goal and four inside-50s

“Really looked sharp and dangerous early. We’ve been challenging him in recent weeks with the defensive side of his game and he had six tackles, kicked a goal and as always, used the ball really well.”

Noah Balta

11 disposals, four tackles, 13 hit-outs and three inside-50s

“Started forward, went into the ruck and then ended up back, so he’s got great flexibility. His athletic ability stands out for all to see, at times running down, bouncing the ball and taking players on, which we like. His aerial stuff is something we want to keep challenging him on, and keep getting better at. He only had one contested mark and had plenty of opportunities to have more.”

Liam Baker

10 disposals, two clearances, two tackles and two inside-50s

“It was a quiet day. He started forward and then went into the midfield a little bit. Ten possessions is probably the lowest he’s had for the season, so it wasn’t one of his best performances.”

Nathan Drummond

10 disposals, four marks and three rebound-50s

“Played half-back, again learning opportunities for him when his player goes up the ground. What involvement is needed from him in his role. He’s a really hard runner for us though, and gets back and supports the backline really well.”

Ben Miller

Nine disposals, two tackles and five contested possessions

“A strong contributor, hard to play on. I love it when he spoils strong and then follows up his work. He’s developing nicely for us.”

Ryan Garthwaite

Six disposals, two marks and two rebound-50s

“As always, someone we really rely on in defence. Anyone that plays on Ryan knows that they’re going to be in for a hard day. He continues to show his good form.”

Oleg Markov

“Unfortunately hurt himself in the very first contest of the day, which left us short down back and he was sorely missed.”

VFL-listed players

Jake Aarts

15 disposals, seven tackles and two clearances

“Continues to be one of our best VFL players. He’s such a strong competitor, seven tackles, nine contested possessions. He didn’t impact the scoreboard this week but was a real solid contributor for us.”

Jacob Ballard

14 disposals, 10 tackles, 10 handball receives and six inside-50s

“Plays a bit of wing, was our captain on the day, ten tackles, six inside-50s, which was the most of anyone on the ground. He’s a really strong competitor and led from the front.”

Charlie Thompson

14 disposals, four tackles, one goal and four inside-50s

“Our 23rd player, had 14 disposals and had limited minutes at times playing as an inside mid. Eight contested possessions and four tackles was something that we were pleased with.”

Tom Silvestro

13 disposals, three tackles, four clearances and four rebound-50s

“Played mainly wing, but we put him forward in the last quarter. He’s such a solid runner for us, gets up and back and is really integral to our team defence.”

Shaun Mannagh

13 disposals, five tackles, four clearances and five inside-50s

“Played his first game for a couple of weeks, came in and played his role well. He had opportunities to possess the ball more, he was around the contest more. Some good learnings for him. Nine of his 13 possessions were contested, so that’s a nice part of his game. We like to get the ball on the outside to him, so that’s symbolic of how the game was played.”

Joel Ernest

11 disposals, four rebound-50s and two tackles

“One of our VFL players, playing his third game off half-back. He can run-and-carry the ball and we want the ball in his hands more and look to change the angles and come into his own. I thought he defended solidly.”

Ryan Bathie

Nine disposals, five hit-outs, one goal and three inside-50s

“Was a forward/ruck for us. He didn’t impact the aerial contest, like others on the day. We needed a strong contest from him, only one mark wasn’t enough from him. Kicked a nice goal, late.”

Reuben Hayward

Eight disposals, one tackle and one rebound-50

“Came in and hasn’t played since early in the season. He was a 23rd eligible (player) but played as one of the normal 22 players. Played across half-back and a little bit through the wing. Lost a couple of aerial contests, which is an opportunity for him to improve.”

Daniel Coffield

Three disposals, three marks and two tackles

“Returned from injury, had been out for the whole pre-season and it was his first game back. He looked a bit rusty early, but I was pleased with how he progressed as the game wore on.”

The one in the last quarter where our player grabbed the jumper and swung the Williamstown player. How can you sling someone by the jumper? Especially if it usually requires 2 separate movements to be dangerous.....

Biggest problem with the umpires at all levels is their positioning.

They are so poorly positioned they are either too far away or unable to see what's actaully happening they are guessing

It shines like a beacon at VFL level because the pace of the game is slower than AFL.

The number of times you could tell the bloke, the other bloke and the girl clearly guessed on Sunday because they were out of position was staggering

Umpiring is 90% guess work at the best of times. I mean, literally its indoctrinated. They have to determine "intent" half the time = guesswork.
