Title: The former ridiculously early but now official finals thread
Post by: mat073 on July 29, 2018, 10:59:08 PM
I'm calling it now . We are going to be the minor premiers of 2018 .Will probably finish 2 games clear  :clapping :clapping

Think we will definitely be playing an interstate team in the first week of finals - most likely Port but could easily be GWS .

West Coast and Collingwood to battle for 2nd and 3rd . Will probably come down to percentages.

Reckon we will play Port first week
Other option is GWS
Either way rather play interstate team first week

Melbourne are our biggest threat IMO.

My final eight.
1. Richmond. Wins all four remaing games.
2. Port.     Wins all four
3. Melb.    Wins all four
4. Filth.  Loses to Port.
5. West Coke. Losses to Port and Dees.
6. GWS. Loses to Dees.
7. Dawks. Lose to Cats. May miss on % to Norf.
8. Cats. Lose to us. May miss on % to Norf.
9. Nomads. Win all games. Misses by % or makes it if they can boost %.
10. Swans. Lose to Coll, Dees, GWS, Dawks.
11. Essendrug. Who cares?

THE AFL has confirmed it will freeze the price of entry-level tickets for this year's finals series, including the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final, for the second season running.

It means that the cheapest tickets for weeks one and two of the finals series will stay at $35, while entry-level tickets for the preliminary final will remain at $65. The cheapest ticket for a seat at the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final will cost $180.

While entry-level prices will remain the same, the price of other seating categories will rise by 1.5 per cent.

It means the most expensive tickets to week one and two of the finals series will be $93, and $187 for the preliminary finals. The most expensive 2018 Toyota Grand Final ticket is set to cost $410.

The AFL has also confirmed that competing club members will again be handed 34,000 tickets to this year's 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final, to be shared between the two sets of supporter bases.

For the first time, all finals matches in Victoria will now fall under new scalping regulations that make it an offence to on-sell tickets for more than 10 per cent above face value.

Is the 34,000 allocated 50/50 between the clubs? Say the GF is RFC v GWS.  GWS have 20K members or thereabouts. Let's say only 12,000 of them could be bothered to go (since they would prefer to go to the NRL GF the next day).  Do RFC get access to the remaining GWS tickets?

Happy with either, although the thought of beating the pies first up has the most appeal

This is spot on. An even softer draw than Melbourne. They’ll get pantsed well by west coast the first week. They’ve copied everything we have done, their review, attitude, game plan, forward line, and now even trade targets.

The Herald-Sun's first week of finals prediction:

1) RICHMOND 17-4 win-loss, 68 points, 138.3 per cent

The Tigers secured their first minor premiership since 1982 with their win over Essendon and have nothing left to play for. But this is one of the most ferocious sides the game has seen, don’t expect them to take a backward step.

To come: Western Bulldogs (MCG) — Saturday 2:10pm.

Will finish: First and will host Qualifying Final 1.

Week 1 of 2018 AFL Finals

Qualifying Final 1: Richmond vs Sydney @ the M.C.G.

Elimination Final 1: Melbourne vs Geelong @ the M.C.G.

Elimination Final 2: Hawthorn vs GWS Giants @ the M.C.G.

Qualifying Final 2: West Coast Eagles vs Collingwood @ Optus Stadium

I reckon we’ve got some big tweaks to the game plan that will be unleashed in the finals. It just seems like we’ve been cruising a bit lately and everyone from coaches to nuffies reckon they know the key to cracking us. I think our coaches are smarter than that. More astute watchers might be able to see if we’ve test run a few things at an occasional stoppage or situation the last few weeks.

AFL open to four MCG finals in week one

Daniel Cherny
afl.com.au
20 Aug 2018

The AFL is considering a return to playing a Sunday final in the event four MCG tenant clubs earn the right to host week one finals.

While seven clubs have booked finals positions, and Geelong need only to beat Gold Coast or have Port Adelaide lose to Essendon this week to secure the other September berth, finishing positions from second to eighth remain up in the air. Only Richmond (first) have locked up a particular spot in the eight.

Results could occur which would mean the Hawks, Tigers, Collingwood and Melbourne all finish in spots which would give them home finals in week one. For that to transpire, Sydney would need to beat Hawthorn at the SCG on Saturday night, the Magpies would have to defeat Fremantle in Perth on Saturday, depleted West Coast would need to lose at the Gabba to the Brisbane Lions on Sunday, and the Demons would have to beat Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

In that event, the qualifying finals would be Richmond v Sydney and Collingwood v West Coast, while the elimination finals would be Melbourne v Geelong and Hawthorn v GWS.

The introduction of a bye weekend between round 23 and the finals in 2016 has allowed the AFL to begin the finals on a Thursday night over the last two years, with the other week one finals occurring on a Friday night, Saturday late afternoon, and Saturday night, eliminating the need for a Sunday final and a subsequent six-day break for the winners ahead of the semi-finals.

If the AFL opted to retain the structure of the last two years, one final would need to be held away from the MCG. Hawthorn have twice before played elimination finals at Docklands (against Sydney in 2001 and Adelaide in 2007). The Hawks are aware they would be the likely candidate to again host a final at Docklands if the AFL opted to head down that path.

Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett tweeted his concerns about a possible final at Etihad, which will be known as Marvel Stadium from September 1.

“Wait until next week’s games are played. Everything will be clearer then. Trouble with Etihad is it only holds approx 50,000 fans. I think all games will attract more than that and I hope the AFL will give as many people as possible the opportunity to attend each game,” Kennett said on Sunday night.

However it’s understood the AFL are contemplating playing one final on each of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday if the four MCG tenant clubs finish 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th. This would allow the MCG to host all four week one finals. The AFL won’t confirm its week one finals fixture until after the top eight finishing order is confirmed, although it’s believed about 20 options are on the table.

The Hawks could still finish as high as second, and can avoid a home final against the low-drawing Giants by beating the Swans and ensuring they finish in the top four.

If the Eagles, Sydney, Melbourne and Collingwood all win this week, the Eagles would host the Pies in week one, with the other three finals in Melbourne.

Both Thursday night finals have been held outside of Victoria, and the AFL would be keen to play an Eagles qualifying final at Optus Stadium on a Thursday night, should West Coast finish second.

Six elimination finals have been held at Docklands since the venue opened in 2000, the most recent of which came when Sydney beat St Kilda in 2011. That match was played on a Saturday night, with the other three finals that weekend all held at the MCG.

Geelong have wanted to host more finals at GMHBA Stadium but it won’t happen this year given they cannot finish higher than seventh.

Interesting final week.

Looks like it comes down to Sydney vs Hawks match, whoever wins that plays us first week.

If WestCoke lose to Brisbane game they could finish fourth and play us but only if the hawks beat Sydney.

But if Collingwood happen to lose to Freo we could end up playing whoever wins in the Melbourne v GWS game.

Bring it on.   :gotigers

I agree about Collingwood, in fact if they did lose and fall to fourth and end up playing us in Melbourne in the first week then It could almost be intimated that they tanked to avoid travelling and play from their home ground. (insert suspicious emoticon that hasn't been overused by forum troll)

Yes, If we play limp wristed pansy footy we won’t win a final. Simple.

We need to bring pressure or we will struggle to beat anyone.
Attack the ball carrier with fierce pressure and force the turnover, it’s what has made us a great team.

Do this and it’s back to back baby!

Geelong have been playing against witches hats the past two weeks ...who knows if that's a blessing or a curse  ??

Relax, it's like knowing you have a new job but have to keep turning up for another 4 weeks. You want to try your best but CBF'ed because a better job (finals) awaits.  :shh

The Dees are flogging the Giants so the AFL will get its dream first week of finals.

Rich vs Haw ..... full house at the MCG
WC vs Coll ...... full house in Perth
Melb vs Geel .... all the Demon fans will cancel their Mt Buller passes, turn their range rovers around, rock up
with their thermoses and blankets for their first final in 12 years causing a sellout of cheese platters
in the MCC members. Geelong fans will sook about playing another final at the G.
Sydney derby @ the SCG.

If we win the QF, we play the SF winner of (WC/Coll loser) vs (Syd/GWS winner) in a PF.

If we lose the QF, we play the EF winner of Melb vs Geel in a SF.

Love the thread name change, unsure how we will go in finals.
Felt supremely confident all year, but our opponents do not seem to be interested in laying down.

Will be heart poundingly edge of the seat, shaking all over, exciting, nail biting, eye closing final series.

Can't wait!!!

We should win easily. I’m predicting 7 goals minimum.

I liked it better when we were smashing teams in the last. Hopefully we do this to the Dawks and bring them back to reality.

Denis Pagan will present the Jock McHale Medal to this year's premiership-winning coach.

The AFL has also confirmed former Brisbane rover Shaun Hart, who won the Norm Smith Medal in 2001, will present this year's medal for best-afield.

Former Hawthorn star and three-time premiership defender Josh Gibson will be this year's premiership cup ambassador.
