Corey Ellis and Anthony Miles will depart Richmond after a deal was reached with the Gold Coast Suns on the opening day of the AFL Trade Period.
Gold Coast will receive Ellis, Miles and Richmond's 2019 third round draft selection, in exchange for their 2019 third round pick.
Richmond’s General Manager – Football, Neil Balme, thanked the pair for their time at the Club.
“Anthony and Corey played well above VFL level this year and we understand their desire to seek new opportunities.
“Milesy is the ultimate professional and has given our football club wonderful service over the past five years.
“At just 21 years old, Corey is a talented footballer and has a bright future ahead of him.
"We wish them the best of luck at the Gold Coast and thank them for their time at Richmond."

thats not a trade, thats a giveaway.
-
Geez that seems like very little return for 2 players even given they only played like 10 games combined over the past 2 years. We've essentially traded them to move up 14 places in the third round of the draft.

And there is the steak knives

We also get Lynch which swings it’s heavily in our favour.

There's a strong likelihood of the Suns finishing wooden spooners next year. So the 2019 3rd round pick will be in the late 30s depending on compos next year.
-
This is disgraceful list management and trading. I'm sorry but Ellis in particular has upside and worth at least a 3rd rounder in his own right.
Very disappointed with the club via this trade.

It was reward for not matching us. No coincidence it came immediately out with the Lynch decision....
Keeps our relationship good with our northern junior development squad called the Suns... :shh

Correct. Don’t forget the Suns could have matched whatever anyone put on the table if they wanted. They declined to match in order to achieve the best possible compensation, which now stands at pick 3 + Miles + Ellis + Next years 3rd rounder for Lynch and a third rounder.
Excellent management :clapping
Don’t forget Lynch is on a very meagre wage while the premiership window is wide open 😉

Yeah nah 2 players for a future 3rd round pick swap it's an incredibly shyte trade whichever way you spin it.....stuff me it's not as if they're getting nothing for Lynch....
...and what if we have a bad injury run and things go pear shaped and GC sudedenly get a new lease of life and come good next year and finish ahead of us,...stranger things have happened... :shh
-
yeah not whingeing bout this outcome, we paid sweet FA for Lynch, the tab is picked up by the whole comp. For those complaining should remember that we also paid for Abblett junior to go to the Suns by dropping down the ladder order as did they all, and for whomever else got a good run out of the system.
-
I guess paying overs for Prestia two years ago wasn't enough "goodwill" for Crazy Cochrane after all... :shh

Any way you spin it we have been bent over here. They did get pick 3 for Lynch, it's not like they didn't get a return.
-
move them on both players have had there time at the club cant get a regular game why hang onto them sure we only got a 3rd rounder next year but still frees up the list for another players
-
A pick inside 40 is still a live pick IMHO. Paul Chapman went at pick 31. Plenty of good players go in the 30 to 40 range.

Both were going to ge the the chop anyway. 3rd pick a pick in the 40 keep it for points father and sons to.

Then why not trade for just their pick then, we shouldnt have sent one back the other way

It's funny
We harp on about players not being up to it (Ellis C), not being worth much at all; say take what you can get we say
So we do and yet we still complain
Does the deal give us a better position in the draft; yep so it's a win
With regard to Miles; club told him they get him to his club of choice, they did and quite frankly after his lack of opportunities the last 2 seasons reckon we have done the absolute right thing by him which he deserved. Wish him nothing but the best

You been here long enough mate to know that it is very hard to please a few on here!!
Great management, cap space is obviously an issue as well. But... doing the right thing by GC will only benefit us in the long run, if they had matched what would have RFC done? Nothing, and we wouldn't have got Lynch and it would have been egg on our face.
Look at how Carlton dealt with B.Gibbs, why do you think no one wants to deal with Carlton now? McGovern?
This isn't just about this trade, I get it, this trade on it's own GC get a bit from us for nothing in a way. But in future it holds us in good stead! Clubs will want to deal with us and players will want to come to us!

If Towner ends up there I will officially change my number two team.

Can be spun quite easily in our favour.
We traded out 2 depth players and a third rounder for the best projected KP forward in the comp for the next 5 years + AND a Third round pick (when we'll need extra picks for MRJr).
That's a disgustingly fantastic deal for a team that is firmly in the premiership window.
How can you not see that pmac??
:help
-
See ya gents - wish you the very best for the future. Time to move on :thumbsup
-
For the people who think this is a bad deal, I think you need to have a good think about what we could have got for Miles and Ellis.
12 months ago, no one was that interested in Miles, so he stayed with us. Move on 12 months and he didn't get an opportunity from us, and no one appeared to be knocking our door down for him. Suggests he wasn't worth that much to anyone.
I didn't exactly see a queue at our door to secure Corey Ellis either. The talk that Essendon might have been interested did not materialise. If a club had offered us a third round pick for Ellis, I am sure we would have gone in the direction.
So we took the opportunityto give one loyal player his wish (Miles) and move on another who just couldn't realise his potential (Ellis). In the case of Miles, that goodwill will be worth something some day, I am sure of it. Look after players, and others will hear about it.
Ellis is the classic Richmond hope of the last 30 odd years. In the past we would have hung on to him for 6-7 years, paid him a lot of money for no return, and eventually cut him for nothing except the missed opportunity of having someone else on our list who might have become a player for us.
Materially we did not get much out of this deal. But sometimes the intangibles can be worth making the deal.

Came here to reaffirm my view that we were short changed in the deal, but hmm, a great post by Slipper, an opinion changing post!
We probably could've held out and got an outright 3rd rounder for Ellis, but it would've been a worse pick than the one we are going to get anyway, if it was Essendon probably 7-8 spots worse.

Anyone else noticed we are screwing up a 1st round pick here?
The fact B Ellis was al ost out the door is a worry too.
How many first rounders can you stuff up and still be competitive in the future?

I don’t know, count how many you think we’ve stuffed up and then refer back to our premiership.

Yep, same here.
First thought it was a poor deal.
Then factored in the Lynch deal.
Then realized that we got what we could while helping a couple of players.
Bottom line is they could have just been picked up by Suns after we delisted them.
Everybody wins - players, Suns and Richmond plus we get some goodwill for our next raid on them.

Just did a bit of a review we seem to have only a little better than 50 50 hit rate with 1st rounders over the last 6 or 7 years. Gee I hope this new recruiting head is better than FJ.
Misses
C Ellis
B Lennon
Middling
S Bolton though arguably its Dion Prestia a hit but he was a known quantity.
Hits
D Rioli
J Higgins

Probably better to do an analysis like this.
Reiwoldt - Hit
Cotchin - Hit
Rance (EoFR) - Hit
Vickery - Miss
Martin - Hit
Conca - Miss
Bellis - honestly 50/50. Was a huge contributor during our premiership run. Played the footy we needed when it counted. Also from a compromised draft. Taken at 15. Elliot Yeo taken at 30 probably the only genuine miss
Vlastuin - Hit
Lennon - Miss
CEllis - Miss
Rioli - Hit
(no first rounder 2016)
Higgins - At this stage Hit. Not 100% convinced he's a lock but can't complain thus far.
You could include Jared O-N if you wanted. I think Jackson started in 2005?
-
Fine Eyes was still a full time teacher back then!
What a disgraceful organisation we were back in those days. No wonder we were so poo. Lucky we got Nathan Brown, who for 10 games was as good as any player I have ever seen. Then the broken leg. :banghead :banghead :banghead

Both my folks are teachers, its not a punch in at 9, out at 5 type job.
It is honestly unfathomable that someone was a full time teacher and head of recruiting at the same time in a fully professional era.
Nothing short of disgraceful!
-
So of the first 7 we get 4.5 hits with 2 of them top 3 picks and thats enough to win a premiership. Wow. Maybe its a sign of the evenness of the comp. As a recruiter you'd hope you get better than %50. Also its a sign we traded well. Prestia Nank Caddy Houli etc.
I have a memory of one stage where we had almost the same number of games from our rookie list as our 2nd rounders and down. I dont think anyone would call our FJ period a great time at the draft.
-
Wasn't Lennon and C Ellis taken in compromised drafts? So more like mid second round picks
-

No. Conca and Bellis.
-
We got FA for Miles and Cellis.
IMO Miles was worth a pick in the 40 to 50 range
Cellis is worth a pick in the 30 to 40 range IMO.
I know we got Lynch but what has one got to do with the other.
Lynch was a free agent who chose us as his preferred destination.
I understand they could have matched the offer but realistically we couldn’t have given them anywhere near that pick in a great draft. And surely they wouldn’t want a player that clearly doesn’t want to be there.
We finally get some depth at the club and now they are just willing to give it away for next to nothing.
We had better get a decent pick for Lloyd and even Stengle
Lloyd is worth a pick the 30 to 40 range. He could easily play 100 games for a club.
Stengle is worth about the same imo regardless of how many games he has played. He has had 2 years in a success system and could easily become a good AFL footballer.
-
You’ve overrated our players a fair bit there BT.
CEllis has played 27 games in 4 years and really didn’t show anything more than a couple of small glimpses.
Miles is proven at afl level and I sort of agree with your evaluation but you can’t expect to get much for a guy that’s played around 5 games in 2 years.
Lloyd will be 29 by the time next season starts so I think your call of playing 100 games for his next club is a bit of a stretch.
Stengle is a rookie listed player with 2 afl games to his name.
While I would love to get 3rd rounders for all those players fact of the matter is they are all depth players starved of opportunity at afl level. Combination of goodwill towards the players and the fact that they are out of contract and are pretty much garaunteed to get to the clubs by way of the drafts means that we unfortunately take what we can get.

You forgot lachie Neale taken in the third round. But honestly as much as people lay into him, I don’t see how you can call a 150+ game premiership player and life member of the club a miss.
People also have unrealistic expectations, if we got the best player available (in hindsight) with all our first round picks how exactly we would fit them all into the salary cap considering we’re close to making out as is?

And that there is what people can't quite understand.
If we weren't willing to make the exact trade we did Miles and Ellis and the exchange of picks then GC would match the bid for Lynch and we are forced to trade.
Which makes them inextricably linked, despite being separate deals.
So yes, we could have played hard ball and maybe made GC sweat. But would we honestly, really, want to risk bringing in the perfect target that we have been working on for 2+ years for a measly extra second rounder?
C'mon guys, get a grip.

the other thing is both of these players like Lloyd; are out of contract 31 Oct. So if we don't trade we get nothing for them as they would become delisted free agents.
And I still think in the case of Miles; we repaid the guy for some loyalty who could left last year but stuck around. Promised we'd get him to his club of his choice and we did. CEllis (IMHO) was worth a 4th rounder at best - been a huge disappointment especially this year

agreed well said.
I rated Miles and Lloyd but you cant expect much more given the circumstances of age, games played etc. CEllis is a spud, wont play more than 5-10 games for GC

150 games of pooting his pants.
FHO while he has some fooled. (Dimma just coming around now)
I would take a 3rd rounder and run.
-
Good luck to Miles and C Ellis. As was said previously - there go the steak knives. I wish them well. I honestly think Miles will chalk up another 100 games. C Ellis will probably flop again.
B Ellis should be traded out for anything remotely useful. Any pick or depth player we can get. Should look at a backup ruckman to upgrade on Soldo etc.

Miles if he had of been playing for most other clubs in the last 2 years would have played every game IMO. So to rate him purely on his games played isn’t quite right.
And Cellis for me has never really been given a proper opportunity in his correct position at AFL level.
Both players will play a lot of footy at the GC and just on that they are both worth a pick around 40.
Just my opinion but both worth more than we got for them... regardless of the Lynch deal.
-
Prestia Caddy even Higgins and Graham changed the dynamic for Miles. 2015 Miles finished 4th in our Band F and 6th in 2016
2017 no opporunity. Tough squeeze.
C. Ellis, if you are not played regularly or in the wrong position then it would be hard to cement your spot in the team.
Good luck to them both

“It was a tough one because I played 60 games straight and then to play six in two years was difficult. I was obviously rapt that the side was going so well, but it was certainly frustrating that I couldn’t break in as well. So it was a bit of a catch 22,” Miles told foxsports.com.au this week before flying to New Zealand for Gold Coast’s pre-season camp.
“When the team wins the premiership and then finishes on top of the ladder, it is hard to change a winning side. That was generally what I found. And even when I came in, I was last one in, first one out. So the prospect of more senior opportunity was the catalyst for the move up here.
“The hunger for me to improve and to get better and to play good senior footy has never been higher than what it is now because of the last two years. I feel like I’m coming into the prime of my career and have plenty to offer at this level.”

Both gone from the Suns. Anthony Miles has retired while Corey Ellis has been delisted.
We effectively* got Ralphsmith from the trade.
* Technically, we traded the Suns' 3rd rounder to Collingwood (Bianco) and move a spot back in last year's draft (Ralphsmith) for a swap of 2nd round picks with St Kilda in this year's upcoming draft.

Are you sure that's right? I thought we got one of the Qld boys Martin or Cumberland with the GC 3rd rounder.

Yep, it's correct.
21. Dow - our first rounder.
43. Cumberland - our 2nd rounder.
44. Martyn - Ellis compo (2nd rounder) …….. should have been a late first round compo but that's another story.
46. Ralphsmith - effectively the Suns' 3rd rounder we traded for in 2018.
56. Biggie - the pick we got for Butler.
