Getting in early . All aboard the Dusty train . :bow :bow
4 or 5 votes already .
-
Dunno about him getting any last night
-
He's the kind of player umpires notice now and he saved his best for the end of the game, which would stick in their minds, so I wouldn't be surprised if he polled.
-
Cotchin and Treloar the 3 and 2.
Martin could sneak the 1
-
Martin could get 1. Got talked up all week so umps probably notice him more
-
Grundy was Collingwood's best player by a mile - I'd also argue Goldsack & Pendlebury were just as good if not better than Treloar as well. Treloar will get the most likely votes though. Brownlow is bollocks.
-
Treloar was BOG imo.
Then Cotch.
Then Grundy.
-
Pfft - Treloar played like Grigg on a good day....got a lot of it, bobbed up for a couple of snags but mostly just hacked it forward and did stuff all defensively....

Glad you finally agree....

People are severely underrating Rance's match too - even "below par" we still would've lost easily had he not been there... :shh
-
I reckon Treloar is an upgrade on Grigg but he doesn't use the ball well enough to be elite. He had less influence than Cotchin on the game.

No doubt about it and I know I have.
Assbury doesn't help with his incompetence as a defender making Rance work twice as hard but I also reckon Rance is definitely underdone fitness wise. In both games he looked spent by quarter time.
Let's hope he doesn't injure himself as then we are completely rooted.

Yeah I thought Rance was poor by his standards until I watched the replay and realized that he won a poo load of contests for us.

Add another 2 or 3 votes today.
Dusty disposal was off in the first half but he killed the Eagles after half-time. 40 touches, 33 kicks, 15 clearances, 5 centre clearances, 5 tackles, 8 In50s + 2 goals. He's a freak!

DUSTY’S IMPROVING
DUSTIN Martin won his first Richmond best and fairest last season and finished third in the Brownlow Medal.
This year he is better.
Martin has collected 329 disposals and kicked 16 goals in 2017 compared to 297 disposals and four goals after 11 matches last year.
The 25-year-old last night tallied more than 28 disposals and kicked multiple goals in the same game for the fourth time this year, a feat he achieved just twice in 2016.

Dustin Martin, Patrick Dangerfield and Rory Sloane battle in wide-open Brownlow Medal race
Jay Clark,
Herald Sun
June 5, 2017
IT is shaping up as the most wide-open Brownlow Medal races of the modern era.
Just like the premierships race, one of the most intriguing sub-plots of an incredibly even season is the race from the batch of superstar midfielders for the top individual honour in footy.
And right now, barely a whisker separates Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield from the career-best form of Richmond’s Dustin Martin and Adelaide ball-winner Rory Sloane.
In fact, Champion Data, which has perfected its Brownlow predictor in recent years, believes there’s a maximum two votes between the blistering trio at the half-way mark of the season.
It has Dangerfield (16.8 votes) ahead of Martin (16.5) and Sloane (15.2), and the chasing pack, headlined by Geelong superstar Joel Selwood (11.4) and sought-after Greater Western Sydney star Josh Kelly (9.9).
Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver (13.1) is the wildcard even though history says he probably can’t win it in his second season.
While Dangerfield remains a slender favourite to win back-to-back medals, Martin secured another guaranteed three votes with his superb 38-possession and two-goal demolition job on North Melbourne on Saturday night.
And it comes amid a challenging personal backdrop that makes his performances so far this season even more remarkable.
Martin on Sunday jetted out of Melbourne airport to New Zealand see his father, Shane, who was deported out of the country last season due to some character concerns, according to the Federal Police.
He is also out of contract and the subject of a bidding war from North Melbourne and St Kilda, even though Richmond sources are supremely confident he will stay on a deal in excess of $1 million a season.
Clearly, the distraction hasn’t worried him.
Former Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola has suggested Martin is completing extra sessions three times a week outside of his normal training to enhance his tank.
Former North Melbourne champion Wayne Carey and dual best and fairest winner Wayne Schwass on Sunday both tipped Martin to take out his first Brownlow.
However, Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling and Richmond goal kicking great Matthew Richardson both tipped Dangerfield.
Richardson said he’d tip Dangerfield ahead of Martin and Sloane.
“You’d put a trifecta on them for the top-three,” Richardson said on 3AW.
Schwass said Martin’s fitness improvements were key to his form this season.
“It’s not surprising when you learn about that that he is consistently producing that sort of performance every week,” Schwass said on Triple M.
“It’s testament to the work that he is doing away from the footy club.”
What could hurt Dangerfield is his inspirational teammate Selwood taking some votes.
Dangerfield has overcome a three-round slow patch in the early part of the season amid concerns he was dealing with a broken rib.
Selwood inspirationally led the Cats to their third-straight win at home on Friday night, beating premiership heavyweight Adelaide. Selwood reportedly received up to 10 stitches after an on-field collision with Crow Andy Otten yet bravely played on.

Eat my dust: Martin's Brownlow bolt goes on

ANOTHER superb game from Richmond superstar Dustin Martin saw the Tiger stretch his lead in AFL.com.au's Brownlow Medal predictor after his fourth best-on-ground performance in five matches.
Only last year's Brownlow winner, Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield, is within touching distance of Martin.
Our predictor gave Martin three votes against Port Adelaide for his 36 disposals and important goal in Richmond's 13-point victory.
His tally of 23 votes is ahead of Dangerfield (19), Greater Western Sydney's Josh Kelly (16) and Adelaide's Rory Sloane and Geelong's Joel Selwood (both on 15).
Martin's hot patch saw him firm to $2.75 to take 'Charlie' home with CrownBet on Monday morning. Dangerfield remained favourite at $2.25.
Sloane was on the third line of betting at $13.
Dangerfield has been in his own hot patch, having picked up nine votes in his last four games.
His tremendous effort against Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night helped a Selwood-less Cats outfit draw with the Giants.
Dangerfield finished with 45 disposals, 25 contested possessions and a goal.

Think Danger might cop a week . AFL will look ridiculously inconsistent if he doesn't.
Dusty will then have it in the bag . Well done Dusty :clapping
-
No way he will get a week.
Afl are the biggest crooks in the business and he will get off. If it was jake Batchelor or jack crisp they would cop a week any day of the week.
Standby for no charges at all

Lets not sully Batchelors name. The man is of impeccable character on and off the field. And a great bloke
-
A scenario along the lines of Dangerfield getting a week and going to the tribunal to contest and then get off appealing may take place.
Means AFL are 'consistent' in their ruling, but Dangerfield gets to plead his case and the tribunal 'happens' to rule in his favour.
-
Don't care much for the Brownlow but wouldn't people prefer if he won it outright instead of by default, with an asterisk next to his name and on a night where all the air is sucked out of the room because another bloke received more votes?

Agree.
I feel like Cotchin was actually robbed of the feeling of winning a clean brownlow coz of the cheating scum, and as supporters we weren't able to share and enjoy the moment either.
-
The AFL website's Brownlow predictor has Dusty miles out in front irrespective of whether Dangerfield is rubbed out or not.
The AFL.com.au Brownlow predictor did not award Dangerfield a vote for his 23-disposal and two-goal game against the Blues.
Meanwhile, Martin was again prolific, notching up 34 disposals and a goal as the Tigers posted a 33-point victory against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.
Martin was considered best-on-ground for that performance – the seventh time that has happened in Richmond's past nine matches.
It left the powerful midfielder with a tally of 32 votes. Dangerfield sat second with 24 while Hawthorn ball-winner Tom Mitchell trailed far behind, on 19.
If Dangerfield is banned for the tackle that left Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer concussed on Saturday night, Dustin Martin is in line to win the Brownlow Medal by the biggest margin ever.
The greatest margin anyone has taken the Brownlow by was Richmond's Roy Wright, when he tallied 29 votes to finish 10 ahead Collingwood's Neil Mann.

Good point but no
I'm sure the afl will ensure dusty wins outright now
Ironic though it was our beloved jimmy hird who won it in 1995 after mckernan polled the most votes
Hard to see a Brownlow medalist prized out of a club now, but if it's going to happen it would happen to us
-
I reckon Geelong should be outraged by this amateur decision & appeal! What could possibly go wrong? :santa
-
Haha 2 weeks :rollin
-
Geelong have to appeal. If they don't Dangerfield is definitely out of the Brownlow. Need to roll the dice and appeal. Worse case it is two weeks without Dangerfield and that isn't going to kill their season.
-
Plus, if they appeal & fail some more seats will open up for us Tigers supporters at their stupid postage stamp sized stadium! Win/win! :birthday :santa
-
I don't get it n
As far as I can tell, Dusty hasn't been as good as he can be yet the accolades are flying.
-
The AFL will be pooping itself over the possibility of the Cats appealing Danger's suspension.
-

I am with you, in reality if the guy is ineligible
a) he shouldn't attend and
b) his votes should not be read out
-
No challenge. It's Dusty's to lose. I hope he keeps himself out of trouble! :gotigers

In most years yes though Dangerfield has to attend as the reignig medallist to present the medal ....also they still have to read out votes fom matches the ineligable player was involved in so f.e if Dangerfield got two votes but they only read out the blokes who got one & three votes , people would work out how many he votes he was getting and I'm sure the broadcasters & the media would be counting them anyway and showing them on their boards.
Personally I don't understand why umpires continue to award votes to ineligible players, they should be instructed not to. Seems the simplest and most obvious soultion to me...not foolproof though if a player with big lead only gets suspended late in the season....
-
I think the AFLCA votes (which Dusty is also leading) should be more of a spectacle. I like that it has a better spread of player types i.e. it isn't overly midfield centric. And for the most part I think the coaches have a better grasp on the game than the umpires.

The thing that can stop a Dusty Brownlow romp
afl.com.au
1 August 2017
THE 2017 BROWNLOW Medal appears to be Dustin Martin's to lose, but the Richmond superstar will need to walk the Tribunal tightrope between now and the end of the season to collect his award.
CrownBet, which will be paying out all bets on ineligible Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield if he polls the most votes, has wound in Martin to a $1.20 favourite to win his first Brownlow Medal.
However, Martin has been fined twice for low-level offences and a third minor charge would see him suspended for one match himself and ruled out of contention for this year's Brownlow Medal.
Martin, who has otherwise avoided suspension through his 171-game career, finds himself in this perilous position because of two incidents in the round 17 win against the Brisbane Lions.
He was charged with rough conduct for an off-the-ball bump on Lewis Taylor and fined $1000, and then made unnecessary contact to the face of Nick Robertson, drawing a $1500 fine.
Martin's track record, drawing only one other Tribunal charge for a low-level offence (for forceful front-on contact in his third game), suggests he will keep his cool for the remainder of Richmond's season.
If Martin does commit a third low-level offence, the Tigers would have much more motivation to challenge than the Cats did with Dangerfield, given they would only be risking $2500 – not an extra week on the sidelines.
The AFL.com.au Brownlow predictor suggests Martin would win in a landslide if he remains eligible, potentially by a record margin following Dangerfield's suspension.
He has been judged best afield in seven of the Tigers' past nine games and already has a tally of 32 votes – a lead of 13 votes over the next eligible player, Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell.
Despite the excellent form of teammate Trent Cotchin, the AFL Coaches votes suggest it is unlikely Martin will have too many votes taken from him.
Martin leads the AFLCA Player of the Year award with 101 votes, ahead of Dangerfield (94 votes) and more than double Cotchin (50 votes).
He has been adjudged best on ground by the coaches seven times with perfect 10 scores, and shared best-afield honours twice with scores of nine.

Don't mind that. As you pointed out, there is a potential issue but is easily the best thing I've heard put forward
-
He was charged with making unnecessary contact to the face of Nick Robertson, drawing a $1500 fine.
Still unsure how any charge deemed "insufficient force" isn't then deemed as "unnecessary contact".

Dustin Martin on track to break Patrick Dangerfield’s Brownlow Medal vote record
JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
August 2, 2017
DUSTIN Martin might be on the greatest Brownlow Medal polling tear in AFL history.
Fresh from what shapes as a trio of three-vote performances, his chief rival was yesterday wiped from Brownlow contention.
But from a deeper analysis at Martin’s weekly performances he won’t just beat Dangerfield, he might wipe his Brownlow record.
Martin is on track to surge past Dangerfield’s 2016 record of 35 Brownlow votes and potentially crash through the 40-vote barrier.
Brownlow voting is historically fluky given the umpires that vote on the award and the track record of short-priced favourites getting beaten.
Yet two key indicators weigh overwhelmingly in Martin’s favour.
Last year’s 25-vote performance saw Martin poll votes in every single one of Richmond’s eight victories.
Of the 24 available votes he could have polled in those wins, he racked up 20 despite a year in which he kicked nine goals to this year’s 24 so far.
Polling in 11 games (with six best-ons) despite what is commonly accepted to be Richmond’s annus horribilis, he polled three votes in a close loss to Geelong and two in a defeat against the Dogs.
Those that know him believe he finally clicked two months into the season amid speculation about his dad’s deportation and the fallout from the off-season chopsticks drama.
Injected into more of a pure midfield role, he polled 24 of those 25 votes in the last 15 rounds of the year.
This year Martin could have polled in 14 of 18 games already, with the Tigers notching 12 wins so far.
Martin doesn’t just play well in those wins, he plays with such authority it is hard to see him not receiving three Brownlow votes.
He seems certain to poll maximum votes against Carlton (33 touches, four goals), West Coast (40 and 2), Essendon (30 and 1), North Melbourne (38 and 2), Brisbane (40 and 2) and GWS in Round 18 (31, 11 clearances).
Then there are a clutch of games where he could easily poll three — last week’s 34 touches and a goal against Brisbane, the Giants in Round 9 (36 touches, 10 inside-50s).
Finally there are games where his polling record suggests he could get lucky — the win over Melbourne where Jack Riewoldt kicked six, the loss to the Dogs where he could poll behind Marcus Bontempelli.
Trent Cotchin might steal some votes (Round 2 v the Pies, Round 17 v the Lions) and Alex Rance might take Richmond’s only votes in the Round 13 loss to Sydney.
But last year behind Martin’s tally of 25 votes Cotchin polled just nine votes in a solid year and Rance only seven in an All-Australian year.
Ben Griffiths (four), Brandon Ellis (three) and Jack Riewoldt (two) were the only other Richmond pollers as he took 25 of the 52 Richmond votes.
This year he has been more explosive, kicked more goals, won more matches, been recognised even more for his brilliance.
The challenges come in the form of two low-level fines already accrued and two taggers about to dull his star power.
Hawthorn’s Daniel Howe was well beaten by Joel Selwood but had the better of Josh Kennedy, Dylan Shiel and Nat Fyfe and seems a likely Dusty target.
Then the following week Scott Selwood could go to him or Cotchin, having put the clamps on Bryce Gibbs and Rory Sloane already this year.
Dangerfield might still come with the clouds with 30-plus votes given his best games are extraordinary and he has 35 goals so far compared to 24 last year.
Still, even in a century where Dane Swan and Gary Ablett have been rolled as odds-on favourites, it seems only Martin can beat himself now.
RECORD PACE
With four rounds left, Dustin Martin could already have 36 Brownlow Medal votes in his keep
Analysis by Jon Ralph
¦ R1 v Carlton W43

16 disposals, looked sore. No chance.
¦ R5 v Melbourne W13

27 disposals, one goal. No Herald Sun votes, no coaches votes. No chance.
¦ R9 v GWS L3
35 disposals, 10 inside 50s. Alex Rance best with coaches, Dusty best with Herald Sun. Two or three votes?

36 disposals, one goal, best in coaches award over Kane Lambert. Three votes.
¦ R16 v St Kilda L67
19 disposals, one goal. Tigers annihilated. No chance.

40 possessions, two goals. three votes in Herald Sun, nine coaches votes. Two or three votes.
¦ R18 v GWS W19
31 disposals, 10 inside 50s, 11 clearances. The triple-double. Three votes for sure.
¦ R19 v Gold Coast W33
34 possessions, one goal, seven inside 50s. Not as dominant but still likely three votes.

So taking the lowest position from those comments would see Martin on 30 votes right now.

AFL Brownlow Medal 2017: Dustin Martin’s father Shane Martin should be allowed into Australia says Mark Robinson
MARK ROBINSON
Herald Sun
5 August 2017
UNQUESTIONABLY, there will be an awkwardness if Patrick Dangerfield polls the most votes and, as the previous winner, has to present Dustin Martin with the 2017 Brownlow Medal.
But it will pass quickly enough on the night.
So will the popular belief it will be awkward for Martin if he has to answer questions from Bruce McAvaney during his acceptance speech.
Martin is said to be not media savvy, but that’s not entirely true. Simply, Martin doesn’t like the media and how sections of it have portrayed him over the years, not least through the chopsticks controversy. So he avoids it.
The fact is Martin is no longer the shy boy from Castlemaine and, at 26, is much more confident in himself and in front of others. Martin’s speech, if he wins, could be one for the ages.
It won’t as eloquent and effervescent as Dangerfield’s last year. Nor as professional as Chris Judd or Gary Ablett. And it won’t even be as knockabout as the speech made by his great mate Dane Swan.
It will be raw and down to earth. The rawness of Martin is the beauty of Martin. He was a kid from central Victoria who left school, played footy and who became “Dusty’’, the most famous Dusty since Springfield and Slim.
On Brownlow Medal night, McAvaney will be charged with eliciting from Martin a story of a hardy family, a bikie dad, tribal tattoos, incredible personal development and a subliminal gift to play Australian rules.
There’s three aspects of Martin’s life we’ve come to know.
He loves his dad. He loves children and vice-versa. And Trent Cotchin loves Martin.
It’s astonishing Martin has yet to re-sign with Richmond.
Maybe it’s an attitude borne from his dad, but people close to Martin talk of his unyielding loyalty.
When Shane Martin — Martin’s father — was deported to New Zealand and Martin made a television plea to the Australian Government to allow him to return, he spoke of brotherhoods. “Just because he was in a club doesn’t mean he has done anything wrong,’’ Martin said. “I am in a footy club, he is in a bikie club, they join, get together and go for rides.’’
If Martin wins the medal, his dad, at this stage, won’t be there to celebrate it.
The question is: Should Shane Martin be allowed back into Australia for one night only to see his son be honoured with the most cherished individual award in football?
The AFL told the Herald Sun it would not have an issue if Martin’s father was to attend.
The Tigers would be willing to help Martin go through the necessary processes to try to make it happen because they believe in the saying: If you don’t ask, you never know.
Of course, Shane Martin was deported for a reason.
He was flown to New Zealand by the Government in April, 2016, after Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said he failed to meet the minimum character requirements to remain in Australia.
Shane Martin is a former top-ranking official with the Rebels motorcycle gang. “We are at war with outlaw motorcycle gangs because they are distributing drugs across society and they’re involved in serious crime,’’ Dutton said.
“Outlaw motorcycle gangs should hear the message clearly that we’re going to continue this operation until we can wipe out outlaw motorcycle gangs.
“They are causing misery to mums and dads who have teenage children who are buying drugs from outlaw motorcycle gang members.’’
Shane Martin said in December 2016: “I’m not a threat to Australia. I’ve never been in trouble in my life ... except for trivial things and that was a long time ago. I’m finished with the Rebels and I have been way before they came and arrested me. Never been to jail … I’ve got history, you know, but it’s not indictable.”
The Tigers star made his public plea in February this year.
“I wake up every day hoping to get a phone call from Dad saying, ‘Guess what, I’m coming back’,” Martin told Channel 9.
“He hasn’t done anything wrong. If he was a criminal I’d cop it, but they’ve just taken him away for association.”
The greatest influence on Martin’s life has been his father and it’s why the Tigers have allowed him to fly to New Zealand at least three times this season.
Could the Turnbull Government cut the Martins some slack?
Clearly, it’s worth pursuing from Martin’s side, despite the prospects of success being grim.
As for it being awkward on Brownlow night, Martin has to avoid incurring another fine on the field in the remaining four rounds or he, too, will be suspended and ruled ineligible for the award.
Popular belief has Martin ahead of Dangerfield, who can’t win it, and the two of them at least 10 or 12 votes ahead of the next player.
If Martin was to become ineligible, the player with the third-most votes would be crowned the best player.
That would be awkward and it’s why rules of eligibility for winning the medal will surely be looked at by the AFL at the end of the season.

4. Dusty in vote-winning range again
Only Patrick Dangerfield has rivalled Dustin Martin for consistent excellence this season and the Brownlow Medal favourite might add to his vote tally with his effort against the Hawks. Martin racked up more than 30 disposals for the 12th time in 2017 and laced them with at least two goals for the fifth occasion in those performances. It was far from the tattooed Tiger's most dominant display of the year, but the numbers don't lie and he will be in the umpires' thinking, along with four-goal star Josh Caddy, big ball-winner Dion Prestia and the ever-improving Kane Lambert.

Anyone give Tom Mitchell a chance? Was even racking up 800 possessions in losses. Umpires love accumulators.
-
Yep, can never be sure with umps
I also think Kelly will be right in it
-
Players with filthy stats have always presented as candidates come brownlow night. They never do any good. Even umps can tell the diff between 40 boring stats and 15 crucial ones.
-
Anyone give Tom Mitchell a chance? Was even racking up 800 possessions in losses. Umpires love accumulators.
yep for sure, we were discussing this a few weeks back. Think he will be right up there
I also think Kelly from GWS will poll well.
Media is trolling and pumping us up that Dusty's brownlow and the Premiership are a strong chance for us now.
Reckon the real chance is GWS and Kelly for flag and brownlow, they are the equivalent to Bulldogs this year not us.

Yep. Besides Danger last year it isn't usually so clear going into it. I remember Swan being unbackable favourite one year then fell short, Priddis being a surprise etc. Reckon Mitchell is going to poll just about every game, win or lose where as Dusty might be 3 points or doughnuts each game.
-
Cotchins had a good year and i expect he would get a few votes. Reckon caddy will take some low votes here and there.
Lambert has also been good too.
-
Imagine he doesnt win it and goes to norf for 1.5 mill.
I think we'd feel better about the world
-
this has the classic hallmarks of a Richmondy fail. Why the stuff would umpires, who have consistantly raped us this year, give a brownlow to a Richmond player, is a very good question lol. I remember laughing at Eddie's beetroot red rage filled head when his boy missed out on a certain thing so I am not counting our chickens.
-
Another 3 today?
Looked a class above anyone else out there today.

1. Dusty has the answers
Richmond was being asked some difficult questions through the third quarter and the match was far from settled early in the fourth with the margin cut to 24 points. The Tigers needed a hero, and Dustin Martin was the man. First, he gathered the ball in tight, exploded away and kicked a 40m banana goal. One minute later he was fending off opponents to set up Jacob Townsend for the goal that built an unassailable six-goal break. He ran off to the biggest roar of the day, which could only be interpreted as a declaration of love from the Tiger Army. Martin often ran off the back of the square on Sunday, and his clearances numbers (three) were down as a result, but his impact was immense. He finished with 36 possessions, seven inside 50s and two goals.

it is ridiculous how much power he gets from a banana kick. Go DUSTY! He deserves the brownlow!

Dustin Martin Brownlow date revealed
Scott Gullan,
Herald Sun
12 September 2017
DUSTIN Martin is sticking to what he knows best for his Brownlow Medal date.
Teammate Sam Lloyd has again won the honour of being Martin’s plus one at the AFL’s night of nights.
Given the cameras are going to be trained on Martin for the entire night, his selection of a partner was always going to be a hotly contested affair.
Lloyd was alongside him last year when he finished third behind Patrick Dangerfield.
Martin had been hoping to have his father, Shane, by his side but the Federal Government has blocked his return from New Zealand where he was extradicted because of outlaw motorbike links.
Lloyd is currently out of the side, having been dropped in Round 16.
Given Dangerfield is out of the race because of suspension this season, Martin will go into the count as the shortest priced favourite in Brownlow Medal history at $1.10.
He’s expected to even challenge Dangerfield’s record tally of 35 votes from last year.
Another Richmond star getting a late call-up to the Brownlow is full-forward Jack Riewoldt who was strangely left off the invite list but is getting a gig with Alex Rance whose wife isn’t attending.

Gotta love freedom of speech.
Yes, you can say what ever you like, (and by law) as long as you don't offend, intimidate, make a racist comment, make a sexist comment, be belligerent towards another person verbally, incite a riot and blah blah blah blah blah, the list goes on for a bloody long time.
So much for freedom of speech.

Brownlow from guide
afl.com.au
20 September 2017
BROWNLOW Medal 2017 looks like it could be a Dustin Martin coronation ceremony.
The Tiger superstar is an unbackable favourite to take home 'Charlie' for the first time, particularly with last year's winner, Patrick Dangerfield, ineligible.
But who could give Dusty a fright? Will it be another year of midfield domination? Could the ladder-leading Crows spring a shock?
The AFL.com.au Brownlow Predictor tallies our reporters' vote projections for every game - below is each club's best hope, the player likely to be quickest out of the blocks, and those one-vote wonders that every Brownlow count delivers.
RICHMOND
The Tigers should add another Brownlow medallist to their ranks, with Dustin Martin set to join 2012 winner Trent Cotchin. With 15 wins in the regular season, there will be plenty of three-vote games on offer and Martin will scoop up most. Our Brownlow Predictor has the Tigers polling 88 votes as a team.
Best chance: Dustin Martin
The superstar midfielder is expected to poll a record 38 votes to win in emphatic style after a career-best season. He is tipped to poll three votes in 10 games, with his increased scoreboard impact (32 goals in the home-and-away season) making him a match-winner. He is the shortest priced favourite in history after Patrick Dangerfield was ruled ineligible.
Fast starter: Trent Cotchin
The skipper started the season in brilliant form and set the example for his team by pairing his committed attack on the ball with a strong defensive side to his game. His first month should see him poll seven votes, including three for a best-on-ground effort against Collingwood in round two.
One-vote wonder: Reece Conca
The defender played the opening six games before a foot injury ended his season, but that included a 25-possession effort against West Coast. He pushed forward well but missed his chances in front of goal. He was still in the top three players on the ground, according to our predictor.
Ineligible: Bachar Houli, Toby Nankervis

Brownlow Medal 2017: Dustin Martin defeats Patrick Dangerfield in epic count
Sam Landsberger,
Herald Sun
26 September 2017
ROWNLOW Medallist Dustin Martin says it was a relief to outpoll the ineligible Patrick Dangerfield as the brilliant Richmond midfielder’s season was recognised by the umpires with a record 36 votes.
The explosive midfielder has now been judged the best by the AFL’s coaches, players and umpires and he enters Saturday’s Grand Final against Adelaide as the game’s hottest superstar.
Martin joined Rory Sloane in the lead at Round 10 and was never headed from Round 11, registering a record 11 best-on-grounds to finish clear of Dangerfield (33 votes) and Hawthorn ball magnet Tom Mitchell (25).
“It would’ve been a bit awkward if (Dangerfield) beat me. It’s a bit of a relief, there’s no awkwardness,” Martin, 26, said.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said Martin had improved every season of his blistering career and the tattooed megastar reflected on a pivotal meeting held two years ago when he was told to curb some destructive behaviour.
Martin’s deported father Shane Martin and manager Ralph Carr told Martin he would soon run out of chances at the Tigers.
“I was just a young bloke who liked to play up every now and then,” Martin said.
“The club was fed up with it and so they sat me down and told me to pull my head in.”
Martin’s brother will fly into Melbourne from Barcelona to join his entourage for Saturday’s Grand Final against Adelaide.
Martin admitted how stressful his protracted contract negotiations became before he recommitted until 2024 for $8.75 million this month.
“It was certainly stressful. By the end of it I was sick of everyone talking about it, sick of my ugly face in the paper every day,” he said.
“But Ralph was great for me. I pretty much lived at his house towards the end because I was that stressed out, and I’m glad it got done.
“I was about 14 (when I left school). I just wasn’t a fan of school – probably should’ve stayed, because I worked a heap of crappy jobs after that.
“But here I am today.”
Martin sipped on a bottle of water as he delivered his acceptance speech. He will become Richmond’s first player to line up in a Grand Final in his Brownlow Medal season on Saturday.
Dangerfield opened a four-vote lead on Martin in Round 17 and again edged ahead after Round 21, following his one-game suspension for a dangerous tackle on Carlton’s Matthew Kreuzer.
But in the final round Martin eclipsed Dangerfield’s record of 35 votes set last year and the Geelong superstar then draped the medal around Martin’s neck as Richmond’s sixth Brownlow winner.
The Tigers will on Saturday become the first Grand Final team to field two Brownlow Medallists – Martin and captain Trent Cotchin – since Geelong’s Gary Ablett and Jimmy Bartel in 2009.
Martin this month edged Dangerfield for the AFL Coach’s Champion Player of the Year, won the AFL Players’ Association MVP in a landslide count and appears certain to secure back-to-back Richmond best-and-fairests next week.
A premiership medal on Saturday would complete the perfect season and immortalise Martin as a Richmond legend forever.
The kid from Castlemaine has produced one of game’s best individual seasons in history following a testing two years.
Martin was briefly investigated by Victoria Police for allegedly threatening a woman with chopsticks in December 2015, after drinking at a music festival.
His father Shane Martin has since been deported to New Zealand and this season Martin navigated a media circus focussing on his protracted contract negotiations.
But Martin inked a seven-year deal worth $8.75 million – the richest in Punt Rd history – this month, before powering the Tigers into their first Grand Final since 1982.
Private meditation sessions and extra boxing sessions helped Martin stay cool and focussed on his footy this year.
Martin played every game this year, kicking a career-best 32 goals and averaging 30.3 disposals in the home-and-away season.
He won more than 30 disposals and kicked multiple goals in seven games – all victories.
Martin and date Sam Lloyd, a Tiger teammate, were among the latest arrivals at Crown Palladium last night.

Martin could make history as the first AFL Brownlow winner to also take out the Norm Smith Medal in the same season. But Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says his star midfielder could not care less about being judged best afield in the grand final against Adelaide.
"There's only one medal he's interested in and that's a premiership medallion," Hardwick said. "He loves winning, this kid, just loves it."
It is that determination that has turned Martin into one of the AFL's top midfielders.
"He improved, again – it's been a privilege to coach him for, I think, eight seasons now and every season, he's improved a facet of his game," Hardwick said of Martin's year.
Hardwick said Martin has turned himself into a complete player, who can win the ball inside and outside, as well as go forward and kick goals.
"For a coach, he's an oustanding chess piece, like a queen - you can put in the midfield, put him up forward, just wherever you need the game to be won," he said.
"That's the mark of a good player.
"What he's really brought to his game this year, his unselfishness has risen to a new level - his ability to make his teammates better."

Dusty can bend it like Beckham, says manager
afl.com.au
26 September 2017
DUSTIN Martin's manager won't try to change the Brownlow medallist's introverted nature, believing his client's unique personality makes him a marketing commodity similar to a young David Beckham.
Ralph Carr, the manager responsible for recently pulling off the Richmond midfielder's multi-million dollar seven-year contract extension, says the 26-year-old presents as a "backable" brand.
There's fascination about Martin, given his reluctance to reveal too much of his personality and his blatant dislike of media attention.
It's this trait that Carr believes draws people and potential commercial agreements to the Tigers superstar, and something that will become stronger as his football career goes on.
"He's different," Carr said on Tuesday.
"Beckham was different when he first came into the scene and I think he'll be a backable brand now, and that is really warming to me.
"I think he's going to play better footy [now]. He's such a competitive athlete and he's competitive about his own performance and wanting to get better. I think we're going to see a lot of great football from Dusty.
"I think outside football, people will be surprised about what he's going to do."
Much of Martin's hesitancy and shyness about the media, Carr says, stems from previous incorrect reporting on things like the 2015 "chopstick" incident and suggestions earlier this year that he "stormed out" of a press conference after fielding questions about his future.
Carr said he would continue to let Martin "grow naturally" and evolve as a media performer, but praised the talented Tiger for how far he'd come in eight years in the AFL environment.
"Sometimes we expect too much from them when they're 18, 19 or 20," he said.
"He was a kid, and most of these players are kids.
"I think he just grew up. I think there were pivotal moments there where we spoke to him about having to grow up, and he reacted to all the advice.
"To his credit, he's the superstar and he's done everything required."
Martin's on-field toughness is well known, but it's his resilience away from the game that Carr believes will see him through Grand Final week without distraction.
He says it's the same mental strength that ensured Martin's career-best season while he dealt with his father Shane's deportation to New Zealand during his contract talks.
"As a manager, we've been doing this a long time, and there's an art in negotiation," Carr said.
"The big part of the art is the client having the mental toughness to go through it all, and he has, he's unique in that area."
Carr's relationship with Martin started six and a half years ago when the midfielder walked into RCM Management in Richmond and asked for a meeting.
Martin was interested in the company's services because they differed from regular player agent representation, given Carr's commercial background and experience with entertainment clients.
"We were set up as a sports agency then and managing a few players, but he came in and requested to meet with me, not the other boys, and when he met with me he said, 'I'll come over and sign with you, Ralph, but you have to manage me'," Carr said.
"I thought that was pretty clever at the time looking back, because he has my attention and I am personally representing him."
Carr said his company had declined "maybe 100 things" over the last three weeks – both financial and media opportunities – at Martin's request to allow his focus to remain on the Tigers' finals campaign.
He said his client was totally selfless when it came to this week's Grand Final. Martin went home as soon as his post-Brownlow commitments were done on Monday night, and was back at the club bright and early the following morning for training.
"It's all been about the Grand Final for him, we've been focused on that for a long time," he said.
"We're just trying to keep his routine the same so he can focus on his footy and win the ultimate prize. That's why we're here."

Dusty back on track as 'noise' refuses to quieten
afl.com.au
26 September 2017
THE LEAGUE'S newest Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin has taken to the training track with his Richmond teammates, whom he credited for his explosive, award-winning season.
Less than 12 hours after Martin's historic Brownlow win, it was business as usual at Punt Road, with the Tigers going through their paces ahead of Saturday's Grand Final against Adelaide.
Martin said it was the collective performance of the team this season that was the catalyst for his remarkable personal year, which has been dubbed by legend Leigh Matthews as the most dominant in history.
"I think the improvement of all my teammates and the whole team has certainly helped me get better," he said.
"I just put it down to the rest of the guys chipping in, it makes it easier.
"They gave me a little bit of a clap in here earlier. I really do love these boys, and I'm just grateful to be at this footy club with such great people.
"It feels a little bit surreal, it's something I'm proud of, but I'm just concentrating on this week now and looking forward to that."
The introverted Martin was again reluctant to offer expansive answers at his pre-training press call, with interest in his unique personality growing stronger.
He said he felt the attention surrounding his drawn-out contract negotiations this season, which were resolved earlier this month, made him confident he would cope with the increased focus this week.
"I think I've dealt with it pretty well all year," he said.
"There's been a fair bit of noise all year and this week is going to be no different.
"I'll just get in here and do the job.
"Obviously I don't love it, but you've got to do these things.
"I've just got to cop it on the chin."
There were no extended celebrations for Martin on Monday night after his win, with the midfielder even declining a drink on stage to toast his victory.
The medal itself was left on his bedside table on Tuesday morning, although he admitted he would "probably" give it to his mum, Kathy.
Martin has spoken to his father Shane, who has been deported from Australia to his native New Zealand, and fielded calls from a range of friends and family since his win.
"I had a few missed calls from 'Swanny' (Dane Swan) about 5am," he said.
"I've had a lot of messages and support, which has been good.
"I gave Dad a ring straight away, he's super proud, he's over there with his wife and step-daughters, so I'll give them a call at some stage today."
With the Grand Final looming, the Tigers have no injury concerns, although Bachar Houli trained with his right calf strapped.
Martin said he "hadn't really thought about" the game, but expected nerves to creep in as the week progressed.
He described the Crows as having had "a super season", but said the Tigers wouldn't be intimidated by their national anthem 'Power Rangers' stance they have used to stare down their opponents in their previous two finals.
"Once the ball is bounced, we'll worry about winning the footy," he said.
"That's the plan, so it won't bother us.
"When we made the top four, it was like, 'Why can't it be us?'
"We've worked extremely hard together and given ourselves the best opportunity."
