Need to win this one by 100 points.
-
done :snidegrin
-
The Tiges will go in to win but don't expect them to go all out hard.
-
Must win game.
-
It's all about giving ourselves the best opportunity to win a final now .
We could win this game by 100 - this really is a game vs witches hats .....but I would seriously consider resting some stars . Even if we sub Cotch off at half time.
-
Should be a training run for us. They look cooked for the year.
-
this may be true, but treating your opposition with contempt is a dangerous thing.
We are still not to the point where we consistently win the games we should and win by big when we should. It was only three weeks ago we were trounced by a side that people were saying were mentally shot etc.
If a player is really sore and struggling through games then yeah, rest him, but many players are carrying some sort of soreness/niggle/injury at this time of year.
wholesale changes just because you dont respect your opponent have a habit of coming back to bite you, particularly when you are a team still trying to find the consistency needed to be a top team.

Yep.

What would we rather do?
Take this game easy, then go hard vs North in readiness for finals - Risk losing and risk losing a home final, even missing finals with a win needed vs North?
Go out hard vs Essendon and thrash them - assure finals and home final. Take it easy vs North and rest players but risk going in finals without a decent hit out for a month?
Go hard at both teams, risk burnout?

You won't pull a root at the dance if you can't tango!
Go hard or go home I say👍

Match preview: Bombers v Tigers
afl.com.au
August 25, 2015
Summary
Richmond enters this contest in red-hot form after disposing of Collingwood by 91 points last week at the MCG. The Tigers should be eyeing another healthy victory this week against the struggling Bombers, who lost to the Gold Coast by two points last week in Matthew Egan's first game in charge as interim coach. The Bombers have lost their past six games since beating Melbourne in round 15, and don't have a whole lot left to play for in 2015 apart from disrupting the Tigers' finals plans. Damien Hardwick will be keen to ensure that doesn't happen, particularly with a big game to follow in round 23 against North Melbourne.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, August 15, 1.45pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R9, 2014, Richmond 10.12 (72) d Essendon 8.11 (59) at the MCG
R20, 2014, Richmond 14.11 (95) d Essendon 11.11 (77) at the MCG
R11, 2014, Essendon 15.14 (104) d Richmond 7.12 (54) at the MCG
R23, 2013, Richmond 15.14 (104) d Essendon 9.11 (65) at the MCG
R9, 2013, Essendon 13.13 (91) d Richmond 9.8 (62) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Since the teams last played in round nine, the Tigers have won nine of 12 matches with an average score of 89 points a game while the Bombers are 1-10 averaging just 66 points a game.
2. Richmond has now won three of the last four clashes between the sides and four of the last six; they will be looking for three straight wins over the Bombers for the first time since 2007-08.
3. The Bombers are the worst team kicking for goal in 2015 after 20 games, kicking 205.208 at 45.7 per cent.
4. Last week against Collingwood the Tigers kicked their highest score of the season: 23.9 (147). In the past two weeks they have a kicked a total of 45 goals to 15 and won by a combined 174 points.
5. Richmond spoiled the party for Dustin Fletcher's 400th game the last time the sides met. In his milestone match, the 40-year-old had 10 disposals before aggravating a long-term abdominal injury. He hasn't played since.
6. Richmond forward Ty Vickery was best-performed player of last round according to the Official AFL Player Ratings. Vickery booted a career-high bag of six goals.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Trent Cotchin.
The Tigers skipper was held to just 13 disposals last week, so will be keen to bounce back against the Bombers.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 40 points

Tigers set sights firmly on Dons

Essendon performed admirably under caretaker coach Matthew Egan, in his first game as a replacement for James Hird, going down by just two points to Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium last Saturday.
“They’re playing a different style of footy a little bit under Matthew,” Hardwick said.
“The one thing we like as a coach is predictability, and it’s very hard when you bring in a new coach because their style of play will change somewhat. So, it’s going to be a challenge for us.
“I think they’ve always had a high play-on rate, but it was noticeable they were attacking the corridor and probably a little bit more direct than they had been previously.
“They’ve got some key forwards . . . (Cale) Hooker going up forward’s been a real bonus for them. I think it’s made (Joe) Daniher a better player because of his presence down there . . .
“So they’ve swung a few things around, and they’ve got some very good players.
“Any side that’s got that talent is capable of beating anyone if they don’t come thoroughly prepared.”

If the Tiges don't turn up for the last two games, they can go stuff themselves.
-
The prospect of playing North 2 weeks in a row is so interesting. If it pans out how I'd expect, we could almost effectively choose our opponent in the first week of the finals PRESUMING that we get it done on Saturday night.
I'd rather the dogs or the crows tbh.

A win and percentage booster

That's why we rested Cotchin...... :whistle
-
I can't recall the last time a Richmond side thrashed Essendon which suggests to me that Essendon always lift when playing us. Therefore need to turn up switched on and play the same way we did against the pies.
-
Even with Cotch out, the bookies still have us as overwhelming favourites tonight.
Richmond $1.10
Essendon $7.50

I think our highest ever winning margin against the Bummers is only ~70 points. Let's set a new mark, triple figures preferably.

Late in 2012, we smashed them in general play and had 37 scoring shots to their 17. However, we kicked inaccurately and so the final margin was only 45 pts: 13.24-102 to 8.9-57.

Lloyd is the sub.
NO LATE CHANGES
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Essendon: Nick O'Brien, Jayden Laverde, Ben Howlett
Substitute: Jackson Merrett
Richmond: Dylan Grimes, Anthony Miles, Ben Lennon
Substitute: Sam Lloyd

Indeed, look after you.

-
Just got to make sure tonight we aren't complacent and come out strong in the first quarter like last week. Touchwood no injuries either :pray.
-
Ordinary crowd. No show from Bomber fans.
Wet footy tonight, Tiges. Hard at the footy, keep it simple and kick long and direct.
-
Titch, you should have nailed that.
1 - 0
-
Where was the manning up? :banghead
-
Grimes win the ball in the middle, dodges a couple of Bombers and hits up Lennon 45m out. Point.
2 - 6
-
Being outworked so far.
-
Jack whacked in the head= no free ::)
-
Bachar finds Macca 45m out. Sprays it to the pocket and two Bombers spoil each other and it's out of bounds for a throw-in. Essendon clear.
-
What the hell..... :banghead
-
You don't tap it to the deep defensive corridor in the wet :facepalm.
2 - 12
Dumb and lazy footy so far.
-
looking like a wise decision to stay home tonight
-
looking like a wise decision to stay home tonight
Yep
-
Ball travels 25m and the ump call "not 15" :huh.
-
Trying the play dry weather footy in the wet. Over-handballing when they should kick.
-
You reckon we can actually hit a chest with any of those bloody handballs? :banghead
-
Thomas wobbly kick somehow gets to a out-stretched diving Lennon 40m out. Misses.
3 - 12
-
Floss in the back not paid ::).
-
KICK THE FREAKING BALL. DON'T HANDBALL! :banghead
Titch held = no free ::).
Lennon's snap goes OOTF.
-
LOL Chapman. Gifts Ivan 50m. Goal :gotigers.
Needed that one.
Rich 9
Ess 12
-
It's called being in the protective zone, Lingy. Ivan went to kick and Chapman was in the way.
-
So you can now dump a player to the ground without the ball ::).
-
Titch on the wing goes long. Free to Lids at HF. Goes long and Grigg soccers it for a poster.
10 - 12
-
Macca long into space inside F50. Hibberd pinged by Titch 35m out. Shot is wide and doesn't make the distance. Siren!
Quarter time
Richmond 1.4-10
Essendon 2.0-12
-
I give the Tigers 2 out of 10 for that quarter of footy.
If that was against either Bulldogs Adelaide or North we would've got our arses kicked.
Unacceptable footy for this time of year. :banghead
-
Shocking first 20 minutes (outworked and trying to play dry weather footy in the wet) but picked up in the last 5 mins to get some control of the ball. Need to take our chances though.
Lennon has great hands going for his marks in the wet.
McIntosh 9 disposals
Edwards 7
Houli 7
-
That three bad misses Titch :scream. That was a gift from Hurley.
-
Beautiful by Lids. Finds Lennon 45m out. Lennon great pass to Jack 25m out. Misses as well :banghead
Rich 1.6-12
Ess 2.0-12
-
BT is right. Unnecessary handball on a night like tonight is stuffing us up and putting teammates under pressure.
-
Once again the extra handball stuffs us up :banghead.
-
We will win by plenty.
Umpires been just as bad both ways
-
Thank you TV :gotigers. Finally we kick one straight.
Rich 18
Ess 12
-
Macca chips to TV 30m out (lucky - doubtful that was 15). Goal :gotigers
Rich 24
Ess 12
-
Doubtful lol
It didn't go 10.
But we take it
-
Ivan great tap to Dusty. Long and it's a ball-up. Lennon blind snap is OOTF.
-
Shocking kick on wing allows the Bombers to go inside 50 and they pull a goal out of nowhere ::).
24 - 18
-
Classy play by Lennon on the boundary. Lids couldn't make up his mind and goes for a snap that bounces through for a point.
Grigg to Lids and his bouncing shot misses again.
26 - 18
-
We've missed plenty :banghead and they can't miss ::).
26 - 24.
Back to dumb dumb dumb footy.
-
That was dumb Grimes. Ran back into traffic where all the Bombers were.
-
This is an embarrassment.
:facepalm
-
Stiffen bloody useless hacks
-
Get stuffed, ump! Paying a long kick deliberate in the wet :facepalm.
-
TV gets out in space and then spots up Lids 35m out. Goal :gotigers.
Back in front thankfully.
Rich 32
Ess 30
-
Ivan, why tap it back Essendon's direction when all your teammates were running forward? :huh3
-
Dusty crumbs but his bouncing snap is touched through.
Dusty gets it back and fires but the goalumpire calls it behind. Looked through from the TV camera angle.
Half-time
Richmond 1.4 4.10-34
Essendon 2.0 5.0-30
Goals: Vickery 2, Deledio, Maric
-

Just so many times that I've said to myself, "How can a team with a chance at a top four spot dish up this rubbish?" There's gotta be something wrong with a group that cannot motivate themselves.
-
With 15 more inside 50s and 9 more scoring shots, we should be 5 goals up by now. Bad kicking is bad footy and we've kept Essendon in it as a result :banghead.
-
I'd take Stevie J over that flog Jack any day. Playing like a fool.
-
Kicking for goal in the wet should simply not be this bad, even with a wet ball you should be able to kick a ball straight for Gods sake. You can almost sense that this is one of those games that no matter what we do we are destined to lose. The longer the Bombers are in the game the harder its going to be to win tonight, we need to put scoreboard pressure on so that they drop off. Our poor conversion in front of goal is just inviting them back in the game. Am sure all agree that the game so far has been one of the more frustrating games this season to watch.
-
Possies:
Grigg 14
Lids 13
Houli 12
Titch 12
Lennon 12
Dusty 11
Ellis 11
Macca 11
Thomas 10
Rance 10
Floss 9
Lambert 8
Miles 8
Hunt 7
Newy 7
Ivan 7
Chaplin 6
Grimes 5
Batch 5
Jack 5
Vickery 3
Lloyd 0 .... sub (not used yet)
Total: 186 - 176 ..... ( contest. 90 - 94 )
Clearances: 22 - 19 ....... ( centre: 6 - 5 )
Inside 50s: 37 - 22 ....... ( F50 marks: 7 - 2 )
Tackles: 41 - 40
Hitouts: 18 - 18
The Tigers had five more marks inside 50, 15 more inside 50s and 11 more shots on goal in the first half of this match. But Richmond's kicking efficiency inside their forward 50 was just 24 per cent, while Essendon kicked at 46 per cent up forward.

-
Lmao at the umpiring.
Lmao at how ugly Daniher is.
Lmao at 4-10
They'd wanna get their poo together for the second half and deliver at least a 40 point smacking.
-
Let's hope that the boys wake up to themselves in the second half and start playing some tough, wet weather footy. The Bombers have absolutely nothing to play for and they are making us look timid.
-

Our over-possessing by hand in the wet has been just as frustrating and infuriating as our pathetic goalkicking :banghead.
The only enjoyable thing from the game so far has been Lennon's marking.
-
Ivan out of the guts from the first bounce and Vickery marks 55m out. He then finds Newy 30m out. Misses as well :scream.
35 - 30
-
Brilliant Macca. Clever soccers in the wet and finds Dusty = goal :gotigers.
Rich 41
Ess 30
-
5 minutes of crap is going to cost us a goal :banghead.
Lucky Carlisle can't kick.
41 - 32
-
Good F50 tackle Lids and advantage is paid to Thomas who goals :gotigers.
Rich 47
Ess 32
-
Where was the protection goal side of the stoppage? :banghead
Geez, we've done some dumb things tonight as far as footy basics.
-
Great mark Floss.
-
Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
-
:facepalm
-
Miles taken high right in front of the ump = no free ::).
-
Newy subbed off; LLoyd on.
Lids 5 bounces and then kicks it out of bounds.
-
Make hard work of it and somehow Grigg soccers it through for a goal :gotigers.
Rich 53
Ess 38
-
Great mark Jack but you need to kick these. 40m out.
Slices it.
54 - 38
-
3/4 time
Richmond 1.4 4.10 7.12-54
Essendon 2.0 5.0 6.2-38
Goals: Vickery 2, Deledio, Martin, Maric, Thomas, Grigg.
-
.... does someone else already have a trademark on "Just terrific, terrific ..."?
-
That's WP trademark, Muscles ;D.
Frustrating slog. Our forward play has been the complete opposite of last week's. Talk about dumb and inefficient :faceplam. My favourite moment that quarter was a long ball and 3 Tiger crumbers all run past the pack contest leaving the forward and square position open for Essendon to clear.
-
Yes thank you. Lids gets the first of the last :gotigers.
Rich 60
Ess 38
-
Ellis on the wing over to Houli who finds Jack on the lead in the pocket. Centres it to Miles 30m out. Goal :gotigers
Rich 66
Ess 38
-
Don't switch off Tiges :scream.
-
One of yous lead up FFS! Lots of hesitation tonight as we've been out of sync!
Lloyd snaps a point.
67 - 45
-
How many times have we tried to do too much with the ball tonight :banghead
-
That's pathetic forward play Tiges :banghead.
We gets it back and Titch flicks back to Dusty but he hits the post.
68 - 46
-
Break a player's neck doing crap like that, Dempsey >:(
-
Grimes out of the contest to Thomas who chips to Titch 35m out. Goal :gotigers.
Finally put a sealer on this.
Rich 74
Ess 47
A minute to go.
-
Break a player's neck doing crap like that, Dempsey >:(
Yes, that was as dangerous a tackle as have seen.
-
He just got booed.
Is that racist?
Just sayin
-
is there a bigger flog commentating football than darcy.
His is a shocker. Im tipping for the next hour we will have to hear how good a career chappy's was.
-
Well that's 2 1/2 hrs I'll never get back.
-
Final Score
Richmond 1.4 4.10 7.12 10.14-74
Essendon 2.0 5.0 6.2 7.5-47
Goals: Vickery 2, Deledio 2, Maric, Martin, Grigg, Thomas, Miles, Edwards.
-
Thomas was excellent, gutzy win Tiges, can anyone give me one positive item for playing newman?
-
Thomas was pretty good. Hope Lids is ok, that was messed up.
-
how long will Dempsey get? How long should he get?
-
Break a player's neck doing crap like that, Dempsey >:(
A tackle like that should be worth six weeks at MRP Lotto. Will the AFL wait until someone is crippled? Even the NRL has banned that sort of stuff. I cannot imagine how Lids could forgive him for that.
-
What was that from Ch 7 going into the ad break?
"What a great upset win by the Bombers. What will this disasterous loss mean for the Tigers?"
Ch 7 obviously were cheering for an Essendon win :stupid :wallywink :lol
-
how long will Dempsey get? How long should he get?
As Muscles said, at least 6 weeks. We don't want dangerous crap like that from hacks in the game like Dempsey. He could have broken Lids' neck.
Intentional, high, forceful should mean straight to the tribunal and a minimum 6 weeks.
-

As for the game itself. Absolute slop from the Tigers tonight :facepalm but we'll take the 4 points and at least a home elimination final.

In the rumble in the jungle video this week, it looked like Dusty could barely walk. Any chance he might be carrying a groin injury, MT?
-
Some imbecile at Seven ran with the pre recorded Essendon won promo
I thought I was going mad.
-
how long will Dempsey get? How long should he get?
The afl needs to make an example of him. it was a disgraceful thing to do. 6 WEEKS MINIMUM. That was just terrible.
-
It was a shocking night for footy. Few highlights overall. I thought Lennon was excellent, Thomas did his role better than expected, the McIntosh kicking the ball of the ground to Dusty for a goal was great. Overall a poor night but 4 points in the bank lets hope St Kilda does the upset tomorrow.

Yep, and the best thing about it is that in previous years we would have lost that game. Credit where credit’s due - we have matured significantly as a team.
-
Was freezing at the G.
Got given a warning from security for 'banging on seats' celebrating the McIntosh dribble and 30 yard soccer off ground assist. What a joke.
Dempsey career over anyway. Who cares whether its 3 or 6 weeks. Won't play next week and if he's retained on the list at Essendon well whatever. Crap club. Crap player.

how long will Dempsey get? How long should he get?
The afl needs to make an example of him. it was a disgraceful thing to do. 6 WEEKS MINIMUM. That was just terrible.
I was shocked, watching the angles and the way his bracing arm was held, it was amazing he didn't break his neck.
The AFL has defintely got this wrong, it is only a matter of time until someone gets their neck broken so some rule change needs to occur.
Rugby in NZ had a huge problem with broken necks, they changed the rules.
I was so relieved Lids got up and seemed ok.

Tony Abbotts Border Force now infiltrating the AFL.

Terrible game to watch
But we won, take the 4 points and move onto next week
That is all
So true

It was a shocking night for footy. Few highlights overall. I thought Lennon was excellent, Thomas did his role better than expected, the McIntosh kicking the ball of the ground to Dusty for a goal was great. Overall a poor night but 4 points in the bank lets hope St Kilda does the upset tomorrow.
Agree.

The bummers supporters were easily upset, that was good.
But yeah that was just a scrap, always in control though!

Managed to find a bar here in Hanoi showing it and got the 2nd half. Totally agree with the sentiments, poo night for footy, everything in the dons favour to make it a scrap, but felt we were never in trouble really. Reminded me of those games years ago (a la v Geelong in 08) where we'd push hard and walk away feeling positive even though they'd get the pointa. Shoe on the other foot is better. :thumbsup

looking like a wise decision to stay home tonight
Yep
Weak from the both of you
-
I'd take Stevie J over that flog Jack any day. Playing like a fool.
He'd be taking Lennons spot, not Jacks ::)

Another good win by the lads last night. Good form going into the finals.
was a very wet cold night for footy.
:gotigers
