2009 Fixture wish list
Jon Pierik & Jon Ralph | August 08, 2008
RICHMOND: Determined to fight tooth and nail for the Easter Thursday game against Carlton. Says president Gary March: "I think Collingwood has enough blockbusters in its portfolio at the moment to sort out their needs. They don't need to be coming after our games."
CARLTON: Wants to preserve its Easter Thursday clash with Richmond. Prepared to play one home game on the Gold Coast next year in return for AFL cash. Would love to play more MCG games but is locked into Telstra Dome contract.
COLLINGWOOD: Interested in an Easter Thursday fixture against Geelong. Eight Friday night games still rate well. Believed to have requested no away game with North Melbourne because of the alternative jumper spat.
ESSENDON: Happy with this year's fixture, including contracted 7-4 home game split at Telstra Dome and MCG. Hopeful recent form surge will keep it in pecking order for Friday night and marquee games. Interstate travel this year (four games) at suitable level.
GEELONG: The club is happy with two or three Friday night games but not 10 or 11, chief executive Brian Cook says. Wants to maximise attendances, but also wants to maximise seven-day breaks.
HAWTHORN: Would not reveal fixturing submission but keen to lure several big drawcards down for Tasmanian games. President Jeff Kennett has spoken of playing an Aurora Stadium game against Collingwood.
MELBOURNE: An extraordinary 14 Sunday fixtures and one Monday fixture this year, an untenable situation. Would want a more even spread, but happy with MCG games.
NORTH MELBOURNE: Wants to increase two Friday night games to four. Keen on more free-to-air games after playing plenty on Foxtel this year.
ST KILDA: Will play one home game on the Gold Coast, but happy with this year's draw. Keen to continue trend of fewer six-day breaks and wants to avoid two Subiaco Oval clashes.
WESTERN BULLDOGS: Last year of contracts to play games in Canberra and Darwin next season. Unsure of those deals for 2010. Believe they deserve more MCG encounters. Want fewer Sunday games. Eleven this year meant too little down time for players.

Funny how the Telstra Dome tenants want more games at the MCG
-
Wouldn't mind just ONE home friday night game either. ::)
Pfft, if Carlton/Doggies wanted more MCg incounters they shouldn't have skipped off to the Telstra Dome. Protect the Home tenants, not the ring ins. :banghead The Dogs have next to no chance of selling out a home game at TD (Except maybe vs Collingwood) anyway let alone more than that amount at the MCG. Stay off our turf. >:(
-
Make the finals this year and the tv games will take care of themselves.
Couldn't March think of a positive response like twice getting 70k+ vs Carlton which will most likely rise again next year with two up and coming traditional rivals. Plus the Pies only got a home crowd of 58k against a flying Hawthorn. More convincing than just saying the Pies have enough blockbusters.
-
I would think it is a given we will get a Friday night game next year.....
More Saturdays is what I'd like and fewer SUndays
And a trip to Brissie in place of a Perth trip would be a great :thumbsup

not for me 2 games at Subi fantastic for us WA members and dont forget 2 wins this season and likelyhood of more of the same in season 09 now thats a :thumbsup :thumbsup
-
Agree with WP about fewer Sunday games. We have/had 11 this year.
11 home games at the 'G. We won't get it but the club tried to compromise with the AFL last year asking for 9 MCG home games and the AFL ignored us and in fact wanted us to play more home games at the Dome. So stuff 'em. Ask for 11 so we get 9 or 10. We were the only MCG tenant to play 3 home games at the Dome ::).
No 6-day break after playing in Perth ::).
Playing Geelong, Hawthorn and Adelaide once if we want an easier draw.
-
Add to the wish list no "home" game at the Dome against St Kilda.
-
Add to the wish list no "home" game at the Dome against St Kilda.
Agree and none against Melbourne at the Dome either :thumbsup
Collingwood Essendon Carlton twice
Geelong once
And a couple of Friday night games would be nice also. Love the vibe in the city on the Friday after work having a few bevvies in a pub with mates then getting on the train on the way to the footy when there is a big game on at the G and we are involved in it. :thumbsup
-
Add to the wish list no "home" game at the Dome against St Kilda.
Agree and none against Melbourne at the Dome either :thumbsup
How about just none at the Dome. Personally I hate the place.

From an unbiased point of view, I personally love the ground, especially in winter.
however, i hate the fact we have a pathetic record there so yeah pee it off.

Probably it's only saving grace but given it's a winter sport and we all rug up anyway - give me the ground where footy feels like footy.
It is funny though - it seems to be a ground that polarizes opinions - you tend to either love it or hate it - but very few people seem to hate the 'G'.
-
I see a Friday night at the MCG against the Pies in 2009 ;)
One of my biggest wishes is for us not have to travel to that pathetic excuse of a venue Skilled Stadium .... :pray

Ditto. Love it when we play in big games on Friday night :cheers

Interesting to see how this affects next year's draw.
North Melbourne will host eight games at Telstra Dome and three at the MCG.

not many interstate matches
all home matches at the MCG
play - Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne - twice
more Friday Night matches and Saturday Afternoon matches
thank you
:)

North had 6 home games at the Dome and 2 at the 'G this year. They played St Kilda, West Coast and Brisbane at Carrara. Hopefully the Roos wanting at least two more home games at the Dome allows us to play more home games at the 'G :pray with North helping to maintain the minimum number of games at the Dome.
-
Geelong are asking for 2 home games at the MCG against Collingwood and Hawthorn (plus an away game against both clubs). The rest of their home games they want at Kardinia Park which means if we are drawn to play them away next year we'll be stuck having to head down the highway to that sardine can of a ground :banghead.

Tigers v Blues to kick off 2009
Caroline Wilson | October 8, 2008
TRADITIONAL rivals Richmond and Carlton look certain to again open the AFL season with the league expected to list the first 2009 game for Thursday night, March 26, at the MCG before the formula one Australian Grand Prix weekend.
A grand-final rematch between Hawthorn and Geelong has been scheduled to follow on the Friday night.
Richmond and Carlton, who drew a crowd of more than 72,000 to the 2008 season-opener held on the Thursday before Easter, appear to have won their battle to contest the debut match of 2009 with the Tigers having been tentatively promised home games at the MCG against the Blues, Collingwood and Essendon.
Collingwood and Geelong, who lobbied for the Easter Thursday fixture, seem almost certain to play each other at the MCG with the Easter break falling in round three.
The first round will go over four days due to Channel Ten's grand prix coverage.
The Magpies, along with Carlton and St Kilda, will feature on Friday nights at least six times each in the AFL's draft fixture, which possibly will be finalised next week.
Richmond, which has reached a deal with the AFL to join Carlton and St Kilda as the three home teams headed for the Gold Coast fixtures next season, is believed to have also been granted its wish for just two Telstra Dome home games, both against non-Victorian clubs.
Although the AFL coaches on Monday formalised their preference for a home-and-away season in which each club plays each other by round 15, the AFL is expected to follow the 2008 model, in which there were some bizarre examples of scheduling including eventual grand finalists Hawthorn and Geelong not playing each other until round 17.
The AFL is expected to point to the fact that 2008 attendances were a record and that the season can never be fair given the reality of 16 teams and 22 rounds.

Home games against Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton.
Only 2 TD home games and both against non-Vic clubs.
Carlton on the first Thursday.
All we would need is a few Friday night games and we cant complain much all. :thumbsup
-
Good stuff we get to start 2009 with a home game against the Blues but it's disappointing that we don't get more any home games at the 'G. Why did the club still ask for any home games at the Dome? :scream ??? It won't help us get a better stadia deal at the 'G. Playing home games against the other Big 4 clubs is no different to this year btw. We should want away fixtures against all 3 as well. So basically we got nothing in return as far as the draw and playing more home games at 'G by shifting a home game to the Gold Coast :P.
How the hell does St Kilda keep so many Friday night games btw?! :sleep
-
Lol and suddenly I feel like I'm easily pleased. ;D
-
when are the 09 fixtures due out ??? anybody know
-
when are the 09 fixtures due out ??? anybody know
I believe it is due by the end of Oct 632 RFC. Clubs & the TV networks have the draft now ;)
Happy to have round 1 against the Blue at the MCG but.....
We have sold a home game interstate and we get 1 less game at the Dome but still only 8 home games at the MCG... we should have demanded 10 home hames at the MCG as a trade of selling a home game interstate. :banghead :banghead
If it is good enough for the Dawks and their Tassie deal (all their home games in Melb must be at the 'G) then it good enough for us as the 2nd longest serving tennant at the MCG
PS: we have to have a home game this year against Essendon at the MCG - it's our turn to host the Dreamtime at the 'G for crying out loud
-
since were only gonna have 10 home games in melbourne next year, does that make the membership prices any cheaper?
-

Doubt it. There will just be an away game that is called a "home game" for Richmond members.
-
When does the 2009 Draw come out?
-
On evidence of past seasons usually comes out by the end of October Beren :thumbsup
-
Draw leaks so far:
- Richmond V Carlton Thursday Night Season Opener
- Hawthorn V Geelong Friday Night Round 1
- Collingwood V Geelong Easter Thursday (Round 3)
- Richmond (V possibly North?), Carlton (V Adelaide) and St Kilda (V Brisbane) home games on the Gold Coast
- 6 Interstate trips for North and a trip to Geelong
- Draw is 2 weeks away from being released
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12788438&postcount=1
-
- 6 Interstate trips for North and a trip to Geelong
This was reported in today's HUN
Said North giving up homes games on the Gold Coast was going to cost them $1.2 million in guaranteed gate takings (HUN also said that the $1.2 mil was out a total of $1.9mil :o) Refer page 3 of the Sports liftout
-
YAY we play Norf - The locals, all 2 of them will be going for us - YAY :thumbsup :gotigers
-
North have found out what happens when you upset the AFL. So you want out of the Gold Coast - well here's 6 interstate trips including one to the Gold Coast plus a trip down to Geelong for that favour :yep.
We can wave the cheque for $400k in poor old North's face while we are both up on the GC lol.

you think that's fair do you MT?
because they try to fight to save their club, they cop it from that idiot Demetriou and his sidekicks.
its rubbish is what it is.
Those afl puppets make me sick..

No but it's not untypical behaviour from League chiefs even back in the VFL days. They don't mind delivering payback on clubs who stick their nose up at the League. Wait until the club slips up and then whammo. North embarrassed the AFL with their about face on the Gold Coast. This is the AFL's response.
-
when is it released ???
-

About two weeks away.

We are playing our home game on the Gold Coast against Adelaide according to today's Advertiser.
We also look like playing both SA clubs only once next year.
BF saying we are playing Essendon, Collingwood and Carlton twice.
Round 1:
Richmond V. Carlton, MCG, Thursday night
Hawthorn V. Geelong, MCG, Friday night
Collingwood V. Adelaide, MCG, Saturday
Port Adelaide V. Essendon, AAMI, Sunday
Round 3 (Easter):
Collingwood V. Geelong, MCG, Thursday night
Port Adelaide V. Melbourne, AAMI, Sunday (early start)
And to shut up the smug bluebaggers, they rumouredly are playing interstate 6 times like North is lol. 2 in Adelaide, 1 in Perth, 1 in Gold Coast and 1 in Brisbane.
-

I count 5. ;)
Hopefully they travel to Sydney too.

I'll bet Cwood aren't playing interstate 6 times!

I think they are it is just that they are allowed to classify docklands and Geelong as interstate, just a little something that the AFL and Eddie worked out......

That probably means we play Port away again ::).

6 wins coming up just there ;D.

Oops ... yep 1 to Sydney as well.
Essendon vs. Carlton in round 3 so if that is "rivalry round" with Collingwood playing Geelong then the AFL must be making up some phoney rivalry for us like they did with the bulldogs a few years ago.
-
I'll bet Cwood aren't playing interstate 6 times!
Maybe based on the ineptitude of W Coast Port and Freo this season add the Sydney trip in the mid year break and there is your 5 interstate trips. In 2001 When W Coast Freo were on the bottom Pies played each in Perth added with 2 trips to Adelaide. Followed up in 02 by 2 Perth trips and 2 Adelaide trips. Its only when the WA and SA tams get their act on field together that the Pies suddenly want to play North's the Dogs and the weaker Melb teams as away games as a game against the Roos is much more appealling than a trip against a full strength WCE or Port.
-
Melbourne wants to play Richmond on a Saturday night with a "youth theme".
The Herald-Sun also keeps saying it's Carlton vs Richmond to open the season. Surely it should be our home game this year ???.
Dogs also have 6 interstate trips including 2 to Perth in the first 4 rounds.
Possible round 1:
Thursday
Carlton V Richmond MCG
Friday
Geelong V Hawthorn MCG
Saturday
Collingwood V Adelade MCG
St Kilda V Sydney TD
Brisbane V Melbourne GABBA???
Sunday
Port Adelaide V Essendon AAMI
North Melbourne V West Coast TD???
Fremantle V W Bulldogs SUBIACO

It should definitely be ours next year, it better be. :banghead
-
Seems we'll only be playing Hawthorn once next year - away at the MCG.
http://www.mightyhawk.net/forum/view...php?f=1&t=6971
Hawthorn's leaked draw
7 MCG home games (Inc. Geelong (rd 1), Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton)
3 MCG away games (Inc. Geelong, Carlton, Collingwood)
3 TD away games
4 Tas home games (Inc. West Coast (rd 4), St Kilda (rd 7) and Port Adelaide)
5 Interstate games (Inc. Sydney at ANZ Stadium (rd 2), Port Adelaide at AAMI, Adelaide at AAMI, West Coast at Subiaco and Fremantle at Subiaco)
16 FTA games, 6 Pay TV games
4 Friday Night games, 6 Saturday Night games and 12 Afternoon/Twilight games
My guess is that the 3 MCG home games will be against Essendon, Richmond and North Melbourne, TD away games against North Melbourne, St Kilda and W Bulldogs and Tasmania against Melbourne.
-
I will be glad when this draw is released
Would really like to see a few Friday night games.
If what they are saying about the Hawks having only 4 Firday night games is true, then surely we would have to be show for 2 or 3....
Facts are in TV land we rate bloody well :thumbsup
-
Playing Hawthorn and Adelaide (a bogey side) only once is promising. If we also end up only playing Geelong once then we can't really complain with the draw. Terry will be relieved as well lol. I'm also hoping we get a few more home games early on next season to help bump up our membership if we get on an early roll.
If the Carlton round 1 game isn't our home game I'll do this -> :banghead. That'll be 3 years in a row it'll be Carlton's home game >:(.

Yup we certainly shouldnt hold any major fears about Hawthorn as it appears the players have found the way to beat them.
Adelaide, Sydney, Geelong and perhaps Norf to an extent are our major hassles at the moment.

According to Caro in today's Age...
The Kangaroos have been handed 10 Sunday games but have received a fillip in the form of an Anzac Day clash with Richmond to take place at Telstra Dome following the Collingwood-Essendon game.
Because Anzac Day falls on a Saturday next year four games in total — the other two contested outside Victoria — will take place on the public holiday.
Caro also says Richmond are likely to play Melbourne up on the Gold Coast which contradicts what Ricci said in the Advertiser (he said we play the Crows) and that our game will be the third one up there after Carlton vs Freo and Saints vs Adelaide have there go.
Carlton will get 6 Friday night game next year as well as the Thursday nighter against us.

It's a pretty relevant point WP.
You lose a home game to the Gold Coast and also a potential away game to make for it at a ground that is only going to hold 24000 next year due to the redevelopments! THat's about the size of Aurora Stadium! :banghead

Geelong only care about the money they make from their own "boutique" stadium which is far more $$$ than at the Dome or 'G.

Oh Geez thanks alot AFL.
Remember going to Kardinia Park in round 2 1992 and we lost by over 20 goals. OK this aint 1992 but I don't relish that challenge so early in the season especially to a team that kicked 11.23 in a gf and probably should have won.
If that is accurate Carlton is a must must must win for Wallace otherwise he might be staring down the barrel very very very early in the year with the media just increasing the pressure on our board to act on Wallace. Sink or swim as simple as that.

The article doesn't say exactly when except it'll be in the first round of the NAB Cup.
The draft roster for 2009 is believed to have Alastair Clarkson's men playing the Kangaroos, St Kilda, Brisbane and West Coast after a pre-season match against Richmond.

Caro was wrong. We are playing Adelaide up on the Gold Coast.
McLachlan confirmed Carlton will be playing Fremantle, St Kilda will tackle the Melbourne Demons and Richmond are booked to play Adelaide.
"Carlton, St Kilda and Richmond are three of our biggest six clubs and Adelaide have a strong supporter base -- and their fans travel."

The 2008 fixture will be released on Friday, October 21 at 11.30am AEDT.
“We’ve made sure that this year every club has to play each other by round 21, so you won’t see any round 22 clashes where clubs haven’t played each other.
“The restrictions we’ve put around it are you can’t play a club twice in the first 10 rounds, which I think happened a couple of times last year.
“You will find some second match-ups after round 10, but at all times there’ll be a minimum of seven weeks between them.”

lmao @ playing for the first time in rd 22 being a no-no but its ok if rd 21 is the first encounter :rollin
shouldn't you have played every club once before you play a club for the second time?? ...Vlad, AA, Gillon and co. just come out and admit you're milking the draw for maximum earning and revenue capacity and be done with it instead of trying to give us this 'fair and equitable' claptrap

Tell us what you really think of them HT74 :rollin
Here's an old joke for you... ;)
A Richmond fan and a Carlton fan collide in a huge accident on the
motorway. Both cars are a wreck, but both men are unhurt.
"This must be a sign from God that we are meant to be friends" says the
Richmond fan "I agree" replies the Carlton fan
The Richmond fan then returns to the wreckage of his car, and finds a
bottle of whiskey he had been saving.
"Look" he says to the Carlton fan, "this must be another sign from God,
we should drink this whiskey to celebrate our friendship and survival"
He hands the bottle over to the Carlton fan who takes a large gulp from
the bottle before passing it back to the Richmond fan, who then puts the
top back on & returns the bottle to his car.
"Aren't you having any?" asks the Carlton fan. "No" replied the Richmond
fan, "I think I'll wait until the Police get here."

Just remind them HT that a bluebagger's son is now starring for the Tigers and winning B+Fs at the age of 21 ;).
