Title: '04 Olympics thread
Post by: JohnF on August 12, 2004, 04:27:14 PM
Anyone vibed for the Olympics?

What events will you all be keeping a close eye on?

LMFAOOOOOOOOOO@Australia being proficient in schit sports like trap shooting, equestrian and synchronised swimming.

I can't wait for the athletics, weightlifting, boxing and gymnastics.

Will be pretty hard to avoid the swimming aswell, which should also be good.

Swimming, waterpolo (don't laugh, i used to play it lol) - actually i don't like watching it, like watching grass grow - better to play.
I'll watch anything really - hate gymnastics and any arty-farty stuff like that and synchronised swimming.
Used to luv to watch the 100m - but they're all "allegedly" lol doped up to the hilt now it's not as appealing to watch.
I'll watch it all if i'm awake lol.

I really dont care much for the Olympics except for one sport....Basket as we like to call it in Greece. Im really looking forward to this as we get a chance to kick the Aussies ass in Game 1.

Should be an interesting tournament....

Keep an eye on Kenteris for back-to-back in the 200m as well!

Swimming - who was the idiot who did a Peter Schwab and said we have the best team? ::)
Soccer - Aussies choked again this morning  :P
Basketball  - interesting to see how our young side goes. You'll probably be shown to be right about greece beating the aussies om21 but I woudn't be surprised if there was an upset. We've got some good kids and a top coach.

Miss Daryl Eastlake doing the weightlifting commentary. "WOHOA....THAT'S HUGE!"  :lol

The funniest thing about the Olympics is how you end up becoming an expert in judged sports you've never taken any interest in beforehand after watching it for about 5 minutes - "Hmmm... yeah that's about a  5.7"  ;D

I have to admit I just don't have any enthusiasim for the Olympics - probably because the sports I'm usually interested in have been "tainted" this time round.

Usually I follow:

Cycling - not interested now
Basketball - where's Andrew Gaze but will still have Lauren Jackson
Weightlifting - who was that girl who ran from the drug inspectors - catch me if you can :-\
Soccer - loved Cameroon :thumbsup
Athletics - where's Cathy and I am sorry but I am so over Jana :-X
Boxing - I still remember Jeff Fenech sooking when he lost all those years ago
Swimming - I have a problem with those swim suits - and did anyone see DeBruins photo in the Hun the other day - she looks like she turned Chinese :o

The ones I can't stand:
Beach volleyball - yeah right
Tennis - sorry it aint no olympic sport ditto
Baseball, softball

Next thing you know we will have Frisbee throwing as an olympic sport

Froars did you watch the waterpolo final at the Sydney games? Awesome finish! LMFAOOOOOOO@you playing waterpolo.

Is Andrew Gaze in the basketball team? LMFAOOOOOO@the best basketballer we have being 45 years old.

LMFAOOOOOOOO@Jana Pitman updates every night on the news. LMFAOOOOOO@tonight's episode focusing on her meditation techniques which allow her to sense her injury healing. I can't wait till she gets creamed.

LMFAOOOOOOOO@becoming expert judges in events where you don't even know the criteria for scoring.

lmfaooooo@Australians giving a schit about trapshooting and equestrian for one day every 4 years.

lmfaooooooooooo@the Bulgarian weightlifting team using steroids from the 80's which they imported from the United states and getting disqualified for not being up to date with the latest designer drugs.

I actually thought DeBruin looked ok.  It's true what they say about television adding pounds to you though.  I remember seeing Dyana Calub on the tv and she looked pretty big and then one day she was at my gym and she looked half the size.  The male swimmers are pretty impressive.  We see Grant Hackett a lot as my kids swim at the same pool.  I remember when Michael Klim was training there and he used to wear the skimpiest togs - but his body :gobdrop  More mums were watching him than their own kids.

What I don't like is the uniform for the athletes - surely they could sew in a jockstrap or something for the males - you practically see everything swinging in the breeze.  Don't ask me why that gets me and speedoes don't :-\

Yes julz but on the whole swimmers are lanky streaks of pee... if I could wind the clock back I would have kept going with the gymnastics i did as a youngster.... (felt like a bit of a sissy wearing leotards)... look at the functional strength of those guys... can support themselves on one limb almost all the time.. amazing some of the stuff those guys can do...

ROFLMFAOOOO@our shooting pedigree. Don't forget Julian Knight.

Wasn't there a kafuffle in court with Michael Diamond's gun being taken off him after his domestic with his girl friend?

ROFLMFAOOOOOOOO@the_acrobatic_boy_jake.

Gymnasts, although unecessarily "pooncy", have tremendous strength. I used to be into breakdancing quite a bit, and got into gymnastics through that after seeing some of the floor routines and the pommel horse which employ moves similar to many breakdancing moves.

LMFAOOO@waiting for the day a gymnast does a headspin.

When did you go to Greece froars? Must have been in the last 20 years to head off during the footy season  :-\  ;). I had a friend who went to Europe this time last year when they had that record heat wave. She couldn't spend hardly anytime outside during the daytime. Luckily when I was in Italy in August/September 2001 (great timing MT! :P) and it was a comfortable dry low 30s every day.

Although they used and expanded on alot of what was done in Sydney with the water, fire and fireworks, I thought the opening ceremony was great. The job they did with the scrolling real life copies and costumes of ancient Greece and Greek artwork was IMHO awesome. Very clever. As was the mask that broke up into different aspects of their history. Looks like the next few olympic opening cermonies will be based  and judged on who has the best mechanical engineers.

Once the countries came out and it was in Greek alphabet order I waited for the Aussies then went to bed  ;D. Saw the lighting of the cauldron thingy on the news.

Thought the opening ceremony was good, but way too brief. If Australia could cobble two hours together with stuff like Victor lawn mowers and corregated iron sheds, I would have thought a country boasting the foundations of western civilisation could have done more than a 45 minute show. Though without doubt, they went for a quality as opposed to quantity approach, and what they put together worked really well.

It would have been good if we had a commentator there that could commentate on the actual cultural dimensions of what we were seeing, rather than someone jizzing in their jocks over the technological wizadry of the event. stuff the technology aspect to it!

The costumes they designed, which were frighteningly life-like, trumped the actual suspended sculpturing piece, the water flooded arena and the lighting of the olympic torch in my opinion. Which just goes to show that you don't need the latest technology to produce something breathtaking.

LMFAOOOOOOOO@Australia's uniform looking schithouse yet again.

ROLMFLMFAOOOOOO@the next trip I take being to Denmark. Their chicks were awesome.

ROLLIN' @ the Tunisia v Serbia soccer match where the Tunisian bloke had to take a penalty 10 times (no I'm not exaggerating) before it was accepted.

The first few times when the guy got it in the net, the ref said his Tunisian teammates had entered the box before the kick so he made him take it again. The next try it was saved by the goalie but the ref said the goalie had come off his line. The next go the ref said it was all good but the little linesman from the Cook Islands of all places decided to get his 15 minutes of fame and disallowed the next 4 attempts. Eventually after wasting all this time everyone was finally happy only for the successful penalty to mean bugger all as both sides failed to qualify for the next round.

Umpires - don't you just luv them   :rollin

She certainly has been a good sport and that's great. She seemed so happy for Libby in 50 metre final

She could teach Leisel Jones a thing or two about not being a sook.

Leisel worries me - she just doesn't seem to get it. She won a gold medal and didn't seem happy, it is like it took all her effort to smile at the medal presentation. I know she is only a kid but ....

Yeah so did I. Especially after one of her "teamamates" got their head on the TV and waffled on about it "wasn't the boat or the oars. There was 8 people on that boat and 7 of us were trying and it wasn't my fault".

For anyone that is interested in seeing what biased judging is all about, turn it on chanel seven now and watch the boxing. Australia's heavyweight Adam Forsyth is boxing the schit out of this Egyptian guy but is down 12 points to 4. Incredible. The head of the judging is surprise, surprise, Egyptian.

Now I understand how Roy Jones only won a silver when he faced that Korean hack in Seoul.

That was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen in boxing. And I have seen plenty, Lewis v Holyfield I, Whitaker v Chavez, Whitaker v Ramirez, Ali v Norton I and III, Fenech v Nelson I, the list goes on. These fights have nothing on this decision. The Australian probably outpunched the Egyptian 3 punches to 1, and they were hard punches as well.

The poms who were commentating were furious, saying the decision was rediculous, and saying that calling the judges appaling is being too kind to them.

For goodness sake, WHY THE stuff do they let this happen!!!!!!!!  :banghead  :banghead  :banghead  :banghead

Yeah I don't know.  I read in today's paper that it's not the first time in an important final that she's done this.  No wonder her team mates are dirty.  And if it is something she suffers from, how come she's in the team in the first place.

The only sport worth watching at the Olympics is destroyed by cheating peasants!!!

As for the rest of the sports,I go by the adage

I can't wait to see news footage of her getting over her nail injury and throwing her nail filer away since its not needed anymore, all the while doing so with a big cheesy grin on her dopey head.

Gave me the poos when Raelene "Boy"le brings up theories that anyone who has had better times than Jana - ie the Greek girl - must be on drugs.

FFS, she was beaten by a better athlete.

Raylene Boyle did point out that the Greek had improved her time by 4 secs which you could understand easily if it was only 1 sec but 4 - could be fishy :-\

Poor Loretto Harrop getting run down in the last 200m of the triathlon - Sydney repeated :'(

Good on the Aussie Boys getting silver in baseball and go the Aussie cyclists :bow

OSO NYXTONEI H POUTSA MEGALWNEI......

Awesome effort by Fanoula Xalkia....take a bow....you deserve it.

Its sad that Jana had the injury because well I would have prefered the Aus press to eat their words totally without worming out with an excuse. And thats no crack at Jana, but in this country you would be forgiven that there were other competitors in the race in the pre-race hype.

From what I gather it is easier to do that in water than on land.  Hubby used to do long distance running and he said that he could understand 1 sec but not 4, especially in short distances.

SOAP OPERA DRAMA

To the tune of Copacabana ( Barry Manilow )

Her name was Jana, she was a hurdler
With yellow and green gear and fancy Nike shoes down there
She would whinge and do a wha-wha
And while she tried to be a star, the aussie media said ta
Across a running track, she worked from eight til four
She was young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?

What a joker, soap opera drama
The hottest news north of jacana
What a joker, soap opera drama
Bruises and karma, it has to be Jana
What a joker .... you're on the front page again, love.

His name was Rico, he was her trainer
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Jana runnin' there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Jana went A over T, and the poor girl bunged her knee
And then the teardrops flew and she might need an op or two
There was blood and her olympics were shot
But would there be a comeback too?

What a joker, soap opera drama
The hottest news north of jacana
What a joker, soap opera drama
Bruises and karma, it has to be Jana
What a joker ....  you're on the front page again, love.

Oh what drama, for our Jana
The race is about to go, will she still be in for a show
Now it's the eighth hurdle, a stumble for Jana
Still in the lycra that she wears, a fading chance is all that's there
A sook at her time, as the Greek girl crosses the line
She lost the race and she missed a medal
The other racers must be on drugs half-blind?

What a joker, soap opera drama
The biggest sook since Polly Farmer
What a joker, soap opera drama
Bruises and karma, it has to be Jana
What a joker ....  you're on the front page again, love.
you're on the front page again, love.

That was incredible Julz. So much for tight security!  ???

The same lunatic had previously ran out on a track during a F1 grand prix  ::). Imagine doing all that training for 4 years for some nutcase to tackle you near the end of the race when you're in front. I thought the Brazilian runner was very calm about it (I'd guess running 40km would do that). The nutter was apparently proclaiming the end of the world is nigh. If it was someone else he did that to his world probably would have ended.
