VFL ovals to bounce back with a free kick
By Mathew Murphy
The Age
September 15, 2005
TIME-WORN suburban football grounds that once hosted VFL games will be upgraded under a partnership between the State Government and the AFL.
The AFL has called on clubs to make submissions on ways to improve facilities that could also be used by local communities.
St Kilda is identified as one of the AFL clubs eligible for funding.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said St Kilda's training ground at Moorabbin, Richmond's Punt Road Oval, Carlton's Optus Oval and the Kangaroos' Arden Street premises would be top of the list to receive funding given their dilapidated states.
He said that in the interests of a fairer AFL competition, improved facilities at Victorian clubs would enable them to better compete with their interstate rivals, which have superior training facilities.
"There is no doubt that your facilities and how you train can give you that little bit of an edge," he said. "It is amazing that a club like the Kangaroos has been able to compete as it has on the field and work in probably the worst conditions you can imagine …"
Premier Steve Bracks would not say how much money the Government would allocate. Each case would be considered independently.
Proposals to improve training facilities, administration and office areas and grandstand decommissioning would be considered by the AFL's facilities development reserve.
Demetriou said the reserve had $10 million waiting to be spent. He said submissions on upgrading of grounds should focus on the benefits for the community, which would be eligible to use the improved facilities, in a similar way to the Skilled Stadium and Whitten Oval upgrades, towards which the state provided $13.5 million and $3 million respectively.

Maybe we will be able to play VFL games there next season afterall! :cheers
-
Just hope that we all get an equal share and that clubs that have sat on their butts dont get xtra funding.
Richmond have done a damn good job with punt rd over the last few years with the JDF and all.
From what I can gather all we realy need now is to upgrade the change rooms and enable spectator clear acces to the ground.
It wouldn't be fair if saints and roos got extra money cause they let their grounds fall into disrepair (as we did), but at least we have been proactive about it of late. :thumbsup
-
what we should do is try to get about 4.5 million atleast with the major aims being
1) fix up and expand change rooms- about $300,000
2) Indoor sports area incorporating indoor cricket and football including sports merchandise shop- $1.2 million- Our players will be able to use this facility for indoor training...and access made available to city dwellers wanting to do indoor sport.
3) build a new social club- anyone seen the bradman museum in bowral- i wanna see a building that looks like that where the current old social club is...only bigger- with outside courtyard overlooking punt road where people can go and have lunch and have a drink, with a restaurant and bistro area, with a small tab and small gaming area, and some increased office space and an a theatrerette which seats about 80 people- cost about $3.0 million- this area will be made available to everyone, the theatrette can be made available free of charge to city hospitals and the epworth when we dont need it for our player coaching and so forth.
Thats my shopping list...anyone else?
-
Likes your ideas RT. The social club and changerooms need to be expanded.
It's far-fetched but I wouldn't mind some sort of virtual gameday simulator for the players to improve and quicken their decision making skills.
If you've been to Moorabbin Oval (went to see Coburg play Springvale there about six months to a year ago) and apart from the Tabaret and the oval surface, the rest of the ground is about only good for bulldozing. The old stand looks like it hasn't been touched since the last AFL game there. Just goes to show how beneficial the JDF has been to Richmond and Punt Road Oval when you compare the state of the two grounds. Anyway some developer is in the process of redesigning the whole Linton Street area with adding housing and all. Similar to what happened out at Waverley.

Not on the JDF committee are you RT? ;D
Your wish list is pretty close to what the club wants for Punt Road - next stage of the JDF. ;)
-
nah im not, but im just invisaging like an old country english cricket ground type concept. bulldozing the current social club and putting up a new one that looks nice like the design for the bradman museum which i invisage which flow beautifully around from where the old one is at the moment to the right headed towards brunton avenue side of the ground. if these are the ideas of the jdf then they are on the right track. Of course if they are looking for people to assist them i would be more than happy to help. buzz me people. Remember all of the stuff we ask for we need to show it has public benefit, some of my ideas of public benefit may be seen as dodgy but if some greek guy can get money to paint trees blue then this greek boy may have some ideas of how we can get the best corner precinct in melbourne to look like the best sporting precinct in melbourne.

supposedly we are asking for $6.5 million. That would be more than $4.5 million I was hoping for.

i hope what i heard is correct

Thats fantastic!
What happens to the money in the JDF, i thought that the money in there went to renovations!

My understanding is that the cost on the proposed new renovations and improvements is $6.5 million.
From what I've heard what they are hoping to do will be sensational for not only the Club but the community as well :thumbsup
The RFC are seeking funding for the majority of the works from the the State Government and AFL as part of what the AFL & Government are offering as per the original article posted, plus funding from the City Council.
The RFC will have to raise the balance of the money themselves through the JDF.

Got the RFC annual report in today's mail and it says the following on page 4 in the Presidents report:
"The proposal cost of the redevelopment is $6.5m and funding of $5m is being sought from the AFL, Victorian Government and City of Melbourne"
Details of the development also on page 4 is:
"... encompasses the removal of the current social club building, restoration of the Jack Dyer Grandstand, construction of two new buildings and additional car-parking"

From BF:
Tomorrow will see the announcement of a $6.5m redevelopment of the Punt Road Oval, home of the Tiges.
Bracks will make the announcement from Punt Road with Steve Wright, TW etc. To be funded $2m by Vic Govt, $2m by the Council, $1.5m by the AFL and $1m by RFC.

Ramps, My Sister lives just across the road from the Bradman Museum. It's a great little facility with an excellent facade. It's a small building but when you walk in and look around, it appears to go on forever. Internally it's extremely well planned and outside it has a nice mix of old and new achitectural styles.
I think that style of building would fit in really well at Punt Road and the Balcony would be a great members viewing area for games.
-
Obviously/Hopefully they are doing up the change rooms properly, with player access to the field seperated from supporters so as we can get the footy (Coburg) back there for a few games
Punt road is Frawleyen grouse to watch footy, I didn't mind the Victorian Bushrangers 1 dayers they had there a few years back either.
That's one thing NO other Vic club will have on us, our spiritual HOME next to the G for before/after match amusement for all Tigers.
I LOVE PUNT ROAD. SUCK GEISCH POOWOOD ...... Stick lexus manufactured no history no atmosphere centre up ya clacker naccas :rollin

I just hope we can do it without a gaming facility - have a bit of class and do without the dreaded pokies.

Any mention of what time the announcement will be?
The main training session is on at 11am and usually runs till 1pm so I might be able to see both if I get time.

Bracks comes to clubs' aid

The Age

MULTI-MILLION dollar redevelopments of at least four Victorian AFL club headquarters were to be unveiled by Premier Steve Bracks at Richmond's Punt Road Oval today.
The premier was to deliver his Government's long-awaited promise of financial help to boost the facilities of Richmond, the Kangaroos, St Kilda and Carlton in a bid to improve the training resources of the traditional Victorian clubs to enable them to compete in comparative circumstances with their interstate competitors.
Mr Bracks' announcement, which has been timed for this state election year, will see a $6.5 million redevelopment of Tigerland — to be partly funded also by the club and local government money — start at the end of next year.
All funds for redevelopment will enable the clubs to operate community-based facilities.
In Richmond's case a new social club incorporating a major new medical facility will be built along the Punt Road side of the oval with the old social club pulled down and replaced by the third phase of Richmond's planned improvement upon its training resources. The original grandstand at the ground will be stripped back and remain a stand-alone heritage-listed structure.
The timing of the government's announced multi-million dollar cash injection — believed to exceed $20 million — has been kept a closely guarded secret with all clubs told to remain tight-lipped last night.
Details of the Richmond redevelopment, which will also see the club's museum also relocated, were leaked onto a legal website yesterday and club president Gary March confirmed that an announcement at Punt Road was taking place today that would see the club's training facilities finally completed in 2008.

$55m boost for venues
10:52:56 AM Wed 7 June, 2006
Ashley Browne
Exclusive to afl.com.au
Victorian-based AFL clubs will soon boast modern and up-to-date facilities to match those of non-Victorian clubs, and they will be made available to community groups and the general public, as part of a $55 million funding project announced by the AFL and the Victorian government on Wednesday.
The project will mean major overhauls of much-loved former AFL match venues that are now club training and administrative bases including MC Labour Park (formerly Princes Park), Punt Road Oval, Moorabbin, Windy Hill, Arden Street , Victoria Park and Waverley Park.
The AFL will commit $10.3 million over the next three years to the project, with the state government adding $14 million. The seven affected AFL clubs (Carlton, Richmond, St Kilda, Essendon, the Kangaroos, Collingwood and Hawthorn) will commit $15 million between them as will the various local councils.
Speaking at the project launch at Punt Road on Wednesday, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said it was a landmark day for the Victorian AFL clubs and the community at large.
"There’s no argument the club facilities needed attention. The Victorian AFL Club Facilities Funding Program initiatives announced today will go a long way to ensuring Victorian clubs keep pace with the advances made by clubs interstate," he said.
"It will mean that the improved facilities are more open to community organisations and that the daily connection between the clubs and their diverse local communities is strengthened.
"It is a win for AFL clubs and a win for the wider community who will use the facilities or benefit from those that do. This funding is an investment and one that will provide a significant return to the community," Demetriou said.
Several of the one-time AFL venues will undergo significant redevelopment as part of the project. Among the grandstands that will disappear include:
- the Pratt and Gardiner stands at MC Labour Park
- the Richmond Social Club stand at Punt Road
- both grandstands at Moorabbin
- the upper level of the Rush Stand at Victoria Park
Other grandstands such as the Cookson Stand at Windy Hill, the Heroes and Harris stands at MC Labour Park, the Jack Dyer Stand at Punt Road and the Ryder and Sherrin stands at Victoria Park will all undergo major refurbishment.
St Kilda will get an entirely new facility at Moorabbin with a new training complex to be built where the grandstands currently sit, while a new social club and merchandising outlet will be nearby facing the busy South Road.
Wednesday's announcement follows on from work either completed, in progress or in the wings for the three other Victorian-based AFL clubs. Geelong's redevelopment of Skilled Stadium is complete with talk of a further refurbishment already being suggested, the redevelopment of the Western Bulldogs' headquarters at the Whitten Oval now underway and a new sports facility to be built alongside Olympic Park near the MCG with Melbourne as a key tenant.
The redeveloped Skilled Stadium, at which several community groups share facilities with the Geelong Football Club, is regarded as the model for the other AFL training venues going forward.

Will the work start at the start of October 06?
Gary March said work will start in about 12 months time. The only negative to all this is the Club will be without a Social Club for a year while construction is occurring (presumably sometime between 2007-08). So we'll have to organise alternative arrangements for after games while construction is going on at Punt Road. I mentioned the Wantirna Club but Gary said supporters/members love the fact the Social Club is just a short walk from the 'G so presumably we'll try to find somewhere close to the 'G.
The new player and admin building will be where the current Social club is. The walk of honour will be left where it is though. In fact the plans allow room for more bricks to be laid. The new Social club and RFC museum will be in the Jack Dyer Stand and the car parking area will be greatly increased. IIRC March said they'll be 110 spaces.
March was a very happy boy and so he should be :thumbsup.

Overall its better than what weve got, but gotta say I hoped we would get something that looked abit better and sort of lived in the punt rd environment. from these innitial skethes the social club facade doesnt fit in and thats ashame and it looks way to black and white for mine. Its great we're getting work done...but 5/10 at this stage. They should have done better.

Tigers get green light for Punt Road redevelopment
1:03:10 PM Wed 7 June, 2006
richmondfc.com.au
The Richmond Football Club has received the go-ahead for a $6.5 million redevelopment of Punt Road Oval.
State Premier Steve Bracks and AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou today announced the upgrade as part of the $55 million Victorian AFL Club Facilities Funding Program at a packed media conference in the Punt Road Social Club.
Richmond’s CEO Steven Wright said the funding was a huge boost and would provide improved facilities for the Club’s training, football administration and social activities.
"This is fantastic news. We would like to acknowledge the great support we have received from the Bracks Government, the City of Melbourne and the AFL,” Wright said.
“Punt Road has been the home of the Richmond Football Club for more than 120 years, and it's a very special place to Tiger fans.
“The new training facilities for our players will enable us to compete on an even keel with the interstate clubs.
“Our members, supporters and the local community will also be able to utilise and enjoy the new Social Club and community rooms at Punt Road."
The State Government is contributing $2 million towards the Punt Road redevelopment, with the City of Melbourne also providing $2 million (subject to budget process) and the AFL $1.5 million. Richmond will fund the extra $1 million needed to complete the project.
The upgrade of Punt Road Oval includes:
• Demolishing the existing Social Club building and developing a new, integrated football administration and training facility, with a gymnasium and supporting player facilities; lecture theatre; improved toilet and change-room facilities to support the current indoor swimming pool.
• Reinstating the Jack Dyer Stand to its former historical form.
• Developing a new RFC Museum and Hall of Fame on ground level.
• Developing new change-rooms for the Richmond Cricket Club and community football played at the ground.
• Developing new offices for community groups.
• Developing a new building on the eastern side of the Jack Dyer Stand with a community function room; RFC Social Club facility; sports medicine suites, ground level car-park.
Mr Bracks said the State Government was delighted to contribute $14 million to the approximately $55 million program to upgrade grounds and facilities for seven Melbourne-based AFL clubs.
“This program will transform existing facilities into multi-purpose sport and recreation venues suitable for a range of community activities,” Mr Bracks said.
“It will improve the performance of our AFL clubs and offer more opportunities for the clubs to connect with the community.
“The program will be used to upgrade training facilities and administration offices, and provide new meeting spaces, function rooms and recreational facilities for local community groups.
Mr Demetriou said the AFL’s $10.3 million contribution towards the program over three years would ensure Victorian AFL clubs had facilities to match the professionalism and strength of Australia’s number one sport and enable all Melbourne-based clubs to compete with facilities of the non-Victorian clubs.
“This will improve the on-field performance, but, importantly, it will also improve the connection between the Richmond Football Club and the local community and continue to build Richmond as a major participant in the economic and social fabric of Victoria,” Mr Demetriou said.
The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Justin Madden, said the Victorian AFL Club Facilities Funding Program was a great example of a successful partnership between governments, sports bodies and communities working to increase sport and recreation opportunities for all Victorians.
“This program was developed in partnership with clubs and local councils to ensure it meets community needs,” Mr Madden said.

That's the first thing I said when I saw the player facilities facade - "it's even got a double lock-up garage" ;D.
It's looks as though they've tried to fit the design of the new buildings in with the exisiting David Mandie pool building. A bit uninspiring but I guess the main thing is the inside is state of the art and practical.
Hopefully with the new facilities Coburg will be able to play some of their home back at Punt Rd as a "curtainraiser" when Richmond is playing at the 'G.
Is there anywhere you can find a copy of the internal plans? March said the plans would be placed on the club website but he may have meant just those couple of pics above.
-
The Garage Door needs to be replaced all together with some extra brick work and some glass panels. That should fix it. As for the social club- its my opinion, but over the next 12 months the club should consider scrapping this plan and coming up with another. Im sticking to my opinion that a bowral museum style building but much bigger in size would be perfect for punt rd. You cant expect people to frequent a place when its not an enticing place to go...sadly this facade (of whats shown on the rfc website) isnt enticing at all. Disapppointing I reckon, but sadly theyll build it coz theyre excited down there at Punt Rd, theyll eventually work out the social club design was a mistake when no one goes there during the week and its costing them heaps in lost revenue.
-
Pardon me for being stupid but will they have a merchandise area so I can buy Richmond crap once a year? Like the Tiger Den ?
Or dont you Victorian Pricks buy your club stuff there? LMAO
;D
-
I "WAS" excited, but those pics are very unispiring.
The thing is I like to be outside and enjoy the pre match barbies and aftermatch functions where I can stand outside have a beer and a snag, watch the kids have a kick of the footy and soak up the Punt Rd atmosphere. Sorry but what I see here doesn't really do it for me. :sleep
-
before we all completely just trash what weve seen, i think we should be fair, the player facility is fine except for the garage door lol...its just the new social club building which seems set to be a disaster. The club needs to scrap this plan and put forward a more enticing place so supporters can go and have lunch and have a drink and play some billiards and have a bet and pass some time, and watch some training. Its a shame, it looks like we will lose a massive chance to give the supporters a better social club.
-

In with the Museum and Social club area.

They've only shown the outside of the Social club in those pics so maybe (hopefully) the ground side is more "open" and welcoming and inclusive as far as pre-match barbies and aftermatch functions.
Btw the Walk of Honour is missing out the front of the player facility in the pic?!
-
Bloody Hell!! Looks like something from the Thunderbirds. :banghead
Like Ramps, I was hoping for a more classic design to fit in with the Jack Dyer Stand. Post modernist crap!
Did someone dig up Frank Lloyd Wright for this project??
Sure there is a time and place for this type of architecture but not 2006 and not at Punt Road!! :help
-
our supporters are having a fair dinkum crack about the designs on Big Footy. The troops arent happy gentlemen. The troops aint happy- but gotta say, you cant blame them either :(
-
Btw the Walk of Honour is missing out the front of the player facility in the pic?!
They say they are going to leave it there ? What for - Who will be hanging out in front of that joint, better to move it towards where the social club will be, so it's on display. And I like standing on my brick having a brew or two. :rollin
-
And I like standing on my brick having a brew or two. :rollin
LOL.
I can see someone bringing a shovel and carrying his brick over to the new social club when it's finished lol.
-
I wouldn't worry about it at this stage.
Firstly, what it looks like in mocked up mode doesn't necessarily mean that's what the final product looks like ;D
Second, the Council has to approve it and issue permits so.............. :whistle :whistle ;D
Third, all I want is for a Club to have great facilities - this funiding means we will have that and to me at least that's the most important thing
:gotigers
-
As a Richmond supporter who has put up with mediocrity over 25 years I refuse to accept CRAP. Hopefully there will be some decent changes to the building facades and designs to make them look atleast half reasonable lol

... But uncertainty remained over Melbourne City Council's contribution to the project, with councillors accusing Premier Steve Bracks of trying to "bully and railroad" the council into spending $4 million.
Despite the release of artists' impressions and details of the proposed facilities at Punt Road and Princes Park, Melbourne councillors Peter Clarke and Fraser Brindley said the $2 million expected from the council for each venue had not even been put out for community consultation.
"The State Government is certainly trying to force the Melbourne City Council to commit to $2 million at Princes Park, $2 million at Punt Road and additional money in other facilities. But there is no budget commitment at this point," Cr Clarke said.
"Our priorities are in child care and other areas."
The State Government rejected suggestions that it had acted prematurely, pointing to a council resolution to support a redevelopment of the venues.
Council minutes show no financial commitment to Punt Road or Princes Park.
Cr Clarke said Lord Mayor John So had deliberately snubbed yesterday's launch, but Cr So later said he had a prior engagement at a circus.

At Punt Road, the social club will be rebuilt and the cricket practice wickets moved next to the scoreboard on Brunton Avenue, where they will be cut into the hill. The club will also explore trying to raise the more than $1 million required to reconfigure the oval as one pocket is too narrow.
"We have one pocket much smaller than the others so we will explore whether we can raise additional money to look at getting the oval back to a normal shape. That would also require the co-operation of the council," Tigers president Gary March said. "This work will at least put us in the upper echelon of clubs again."

PUNT ROAD DREAM TO BECOME A REALITY
Gary March
The Fighting Tiger Bulletin
June 2006
Although Richmond played its last official match at Punt Road Oval more than 40 years ago, there's no doubt the ground remains a very special place in the hearts and minds of Tiger fans.
I dare say that even those members of the Yellow and Black faith who have never set foot inside Punt Road Oval, still revere the Club's home base of more than 120 years.
Punt Road is a veritable shrine of Tiger memories and there's a very strong connection between Richmond fans and the famous ground.
That's why the recent announcement by the State Government and AFL that funding was being provided to several Victorian clubs, including Richmond, to improve facilities, was such good news for all of us.
As Richmond members would be aware, in 1996, under the leadership of Leon Daphne and with the great support and vision of many of the Tiger faithful, the Club embarked on the first phase of the redevelopment of Punt Road.
The Jack Dyer Foundation was established to raise funds to complete those works and it has remained the fund-raising vehicle for the Club with Phase 2 and now Phase 3.
To date, the Jack Dyer Foundation (JDF) has raised $2.5 million to assist in the redevelopment of Punt Road and I would like to thank our Board member, Don Lord, for his continued outstanding contribution to the Club with the JDF.
In 2002, with the assistance of the City of Melbourne and the use of AFL distribution proceeds from the sale of Waverley Park, the Club was able to embark on phase 2, which saw the building of a new administration building, a pool, and an upgrade of the players' gymnasium.
Phase 3 is perhaps the most important. It will be the culmination of the original vision and will provide our football department with facilities to match the elite teams in the competition, as well as providing our members with a long overdue adequate Social Club facility.
The current project budget estimate for Phase 3 of the Punt Road redevelopment is $6.5 million.
The proposed funding contributions are as follows:
- Victorian Government $2.0 million
- The City of Melbourne $2.0 million (subject to budget process)
- The Australian Football League $1.5 million
- Richmond Football Club $1.0 million
What does the re-development include?
The final scope for the development is still to be finalised, however the current scope of works proposed include the following elements:
- Demolition of the current Social Club, creating an integrated football administration and player training precinct;
- An elite level health and fitness area, including a fully equipped gymnasium and improved community access to the existing swimming pool;
- Purpose-built community meeting space and supporting amenities and change facilities to accommodate multiple sporting and charitable organisations;
- Development of a sports medicine precinct;
- Relocating the Club's museum to the ground floor to improve access;
- Upgraded membership and store facilities.
- Upgrade and improve interface between the Punt Road Oval and the Yarra Park open space precinct.
The initial scope of works developed is preliminary. Further planning will be undertaken during the project development phases to determine the capacity to achieve identified program elements and funding partner requirements within the available budget.
What will happen to the old Grandstand?
- The facade of the Jack Dyer grandstand will be maintained, however, the proposal includes an upgrade of sporting infrastructure and community space beneath the grandstand.
What are the timelines for this project?
- The final timelines for the project will be established once the project development phase is completed.
- The Club has indicated its desire to commence works on-site in 2008, providing it with enough time to raise the necessary finances to honor its commitment to the project.
The redevelopment of Punt Road is integral to the long-term prosperity of our great club and I am pleased that we will be able to conclude the final phase over the next few years.
This also will be a strong catalyst for our continued push with the AFL to have all of our home matches returned to the MCG.
Finally, thanks to everyone for your coontinued support of the mighty Tigers and I look forward (as you do) with great anticipation to the remainder of season 2006.
Considering the tough draw we encountered in the first part of the season, it is a more than admirable performance for us to be positioned where we are at the halfway point of '06.
It's full credit to Terry Wallace, his coaching staff and the players, and I'm sure there's a lot more excitement to come in the second half of this year and the next few seasons for the Tigers.

Council money for three clubs
04 October 2006 Herald-Sun
Damian Barrett
In more good news for Victorian clubs, which have watched interstate outfits win the past six premierships, the council also voted to contribute $2 million to both Richmond and Carlton.
The Tigers grant will be used in a $6.5 million development of their Punt Rd base; the Blues funding will be part of a $12.7 million upgrade of Princes Park.
At last night's meeting at Melbourne Town Hall, the three clubs had submissions made respectively by their chief executive officers.
In their respective projects, the Roos need to contribute $1.5 million, the Blues $2 million and the Tigers $1 million.
Richmond's Steven Wright said: "There has been a lot of work put in behind the scenes on this and this is not just a positive result for us, it is a positive for all involved with football in this state."
Lord Mayor John So, who did not attend last night's meeting, said the three club projects remained conditional on "significant community benefit at each facility".
"Community benefit required by council would include the return of some parkland, the improvement of the presentation of buildings and surrounding parks, and greater community access," So said.

Council backs Punt Road plans
1:30:37 PM Wed 4 October, 2006
richmondfc.com.au
The final piece in the Punt Road Oval redevelopment jigsaw has been put into place with Richmond receiving confirmation of up to a $2 million pledge from the Melbourne City Council.
Earlier this year, the Tigers were granted $2 million by the Bracks State Government and $1.5 million by the AFL towards the $7 million redevelopment of their famous Punt Road base.
Following lengthy negotiations conducted by Richmond CEO Steven Wright, the Melbourne City Council last night also voted in favor of making a significant financial contribution.
“This is a great outcome for the Club. We are delighted that the Council has agreed to contribute up to $2 million to the redevelopment of Punt Road,” said Richmond’s president Gary March.
“This means we now have the green light to proceed with our extensive plans for Punt Road, which includes a major upgrade of our football facilities and a new community centre.”

If I'm reading from the 2005 financials correctly, the club had $148,314 in the JDF as of October 31 last year. Hopefully that number is up after this year. In any case you're right WP. We still need to raise most of $1 million required from us.

Speaking of donating to the JDF:
Walkway of Honour
The RFC are offering all members and supporters a final opportunity to make a donation to the Jack Dyer Foundation (JDF), and be recognised by having a family name and/or message inscribed on your very own brick paver in the Walkway of Honour.
Donations:
* $100 donations are recognised with a single paver
* $200 donations are recognised with a double paver package
* $1000 donations receive an eight paver package
Due to the pending re-development of the Social Club, scheduled for November 2007, this will be the last opportunity for some time to leave your paw print at Tigerland with a paver in the Walkway of Honour.
Registration forms and gift certificates for Christmas are available by contacting Carly on (03) 9429 5333. However, you must be quick as all registration forms must be sent to the Club by Tuesday, October 31.

Bye Bye Punt road - Well the way I have known it my whole life.
Should be a big day - hopefully the tigers can get up and hopefully the new one will have an outside area.
From the Tiger bulletin
Farewell the Social Club
This Saturday (September 1) is your chance to farewell one of Tigerland’s icons – the Social Club at Punt Road . . .
The Richmond Social Club will be pulled down at the end of the year as part of the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval, so Saturday’s final home-and-away round match against St Kilda, across the road at the MCG, provides the opportunity to soak up all the atmosphere for the last time.
There will be a range of pre-game and post-game activities centered around the Social Club, with a barbecue, music, the giant Tiger Slide and face painting for the kids, plus a massive RFC merchandise end-of-season sale.
Given the expected interest among members of the Yellow and Black faith to attend this final Social Club function, patrons are advised that the venue will have an increased capacity for the day.
The pre-game activities will kick off at 11.30am on Saturday and then re-commence immediately after the match finishes at the MCG.
:'( :cheers :'( :cheers :gotigers

Funds for Punt Rd Oval
19 October 2007 Herald Sun
Daryl Timms
THE Federal Government will contribute $2 million to the redevelopment of Richmond's Punt Rd Oval.
An announcement will be made today by the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis.
Despite being home to Richmond for more than 120 years, Punt Rd Oval has fallen away into a venue with limited community benefit, according to Brandis.
"The Richmond Football Club's proposal will see the Oval become a centre for community life for the club's members, supporters and residents of the inner region of Melbourne," Senator Brandis said yesterday.
With a membership of about 30,000, Brandis said more than 35,000 local residents used Punt Rd Oval each year.
The Government funding will help the Tigers upgrade facilities for use by local community groups and residents and create community participation and involvement to complement the club.
Brandis said facilities planned for Punt Rd Oval included an indoor sports centre to house community sports, community swimming change rooms and new football change rooms.
"The new venue will also provide a new home for the Tigers in the Community Foundation Program which focuses on leadership, education and training, anti-obesity and healthy lifestyle programs," Brandis said.
The Australian Government will provide the funding in 2007-08.
Brandis said the Government's contribution was subject to the AFL, the Victorian Government and Richmond meeting their respective commitments to the project.
"The Australian Government will also consider the provision of a further contribution of up to $5 million towards the establishment of the proposed Indigenous Sports Institute, subject to the proposal being developed further in coming months," Brandis said.
This year the Australian Government will provide more than $350 million in funding for sport, an increase of more than 300 per cent since 1996.

Indigenous showpiece proposed for redevelopen Punt Road Oval
2:46 PM Fri 19 October, 2007
for richmondfc.com.au
The Richmond Football Club today announced the planned creation of the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute, a centre to provide inspiration and employment pathways for young Indigenous people in our local community and beyond.
This is a key element of the next phase in the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval, which has been Richmond’s home since 1885.
The Club also further outlined plans to build much-needed new football facilities at Punt Road, along with a broad range of community benefits, including community sports facilities, meeting rooms, change rooms and offices for the Tigers in Community Foundation.
“Our vision is that in 2008, the centenary of the Club’s involvement in the AFL, Punt Road Oval will not only be upgraded to an elite sporting venue, but once again will become a centre for community life for the residents of the inner region of Melbourne.
“We are thrilled with and welcome the Australian Government’s $2m contribution to this major redevelopment of Punt Road Oval. It will certainly help us deliver significant community benefits from the redevelopment”, said Richmond’s CEO Steven Wright.
“Beyond our initial plans for the redevelopment, we are very excited to also announce today our proposal of transforming Punt Road Oval into an Indigenous showpiece, housing the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute.
“The Club is heartened by the fact that the Coalition is considering a further contribution of up to $5 million towards the establishment of the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute.
“The issues experienced within Australia’s Indigenous communities are well known to the Richmond Football Club and we have first-hand knowledge of the life-changing impact sport, and in particular, Australian Football, can have on young Indigenous people.
“The AFL plays a powerful role in inspiring healthy lifestyles among young Indigenous men, and provides a real career opportunity for them. Our commitment to the Indigenous community is also highlighted by our alignment with the Alice Springs and Tennant Creek communities as part of the AFL Club Fostership programme.
“Today’s announcement of the proposed Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute enables Richmond to further engage the AFL, Government and Victorian Indigenous Communities on how the Institute will identify and develop the talents of young Indigenous people from Victoria and beyond – both in football and more general life and leadership skills.
Richmond’s coaching staff and playing group are fully supportive of this initiative and will be actively involved with the program.

The club timed this well :thumbsup. Received State Government funding before the State election and now Federal Government funding before the Federal election.
Including the council's money and the JDF it must be over $10 million all up towards the redevelopment. How good is that! Well done to all at the RFC :clapping.

Tigers to build Indigenous institute
3:57 PM Fri 19 October, 2007
By Ben Broad
for richmondfc.com.au
RICHMOND will redevelop its Punt Road training base and establish an Indigenous training institute after the club received $2 million from the Federal Government.
While locals will prosper from the planned establishment of a community sports building, the Tigers are set to pull down their existing change rooms and upgrade facilities that will see them on par with the best-equipped clubs in the competition.
“When complete and all funding has been finalised, we will proudly boast the most advanced football and community facilities in the AFL,” Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said.
Current Tigers Joel Bowden, Matthew Richardson, Chris Newman, Andrew Raines, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Carl Peterson were on hand for the announcement, along with coach Terry Wallace and several senior club officials.
Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said the Tigers’ board started redevelopment talks in 2005 after realising the club’s Punt Road headquarters had “fallen into disrepair”.
“Punt Road Oval will once again become a centre for community life for the inner-city residents of Melbourne and an elite sporting venue,” Wright said.
Plans were also released for the new Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute.
Wright said the Tigers hoped the new initiative would “transform Punt Road Oval into an Indigenous showpiece”.
A joint initiative of the Richmond Football Club and the Tigers in Community Foundation, the new institute would be designed to provide inspiration and employment opportunities to young Indigenous Australians.
Wright said the club was aware of the life-changing impact that sport and, in particular, Australian football, could have on young Indigenous Australians.
“One of our young stars, Richard Tambling … has spoken several times about the importance of AFL football in his life as he grew up,” Wright said.
Wright said it was anticipated the first intake of young people to the Institute would be in 2009, after the completion of redevelopment works at the Tigers’ home base.
“As part of the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute, training camps will be held throughout the year at Punt Road, to not only teach football skills, but also life skills to many groups of young Indigenous people
Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis, was on hand to announce the Government’s financial pledge and said the Tigers could also qualify for an extra $5 million in funding – towards the new Indigenous institute – further down the track.
Demolition is expected to begin before Christmas, with work to be finished sometime in 2008 – the year in which the Tigers will celebrate 100 years’ involvement in the VFL/AFL competition.

Hopefully we can use this institute to spot some talented footballers like these Cape York kids who will turn 16 in 2009 as well as slowly build up a Tigers' supporter base in Northern Australia as Sheeds did at Essendon.

Steven Wright says the total budget for the Punt Rd Oval redevelopment is now $18 million :o. A large amount of the funds are already locked in so the Club hopes they won't need to take out a loan. The blueprint for the Punt Rd Oval redevelopment sees us having the most elite training facilities in the AFL.
-
I was told this last week at training but haven't seen any mention of it anywhere else. Apparently, as part of the redevelopment, Punt Rd Oval itself will be extended slightly so it'll have the same dimensions as Telstra Dome. So we'll end up having two training grounds which are exactly the same size as the grounds we mainly play on - MCG (Craigieburn) and the Dome (Punt Rd).

Punting on the kids at Tigerland
Jackie Epstein | March 09, 2008
RICHMOND will lobby the Federal Government for funding after unveiling plans for a ground-breaking indigenous community centre at Punt Road Oval.
The club, along with its indigenous role model Richard Tambling, heads to Canberra on Tuesday in a bid to raise the extra $5 million needed to build the centre.
The project will provide leadership training, health, sport and lifestyle education programs for adolescents.
Tigers chief executive Steven Wright said the aim was to reinstate Punt Road as a hub of community activity.
"It's important to have the best football facilities absolutely, and we are concerned about the ill state of our ground. But a football club should be more than just a football facility," Wright said.
"We felt we should give back to the community like they've given to us over 100 years.
"We want to create basically a leadership and development training program for indigenous youth at Punt Road.
"What that would mean is 13 and 15-year-old kids -- boys and girls -- would come to Punt Road for a three-day camp. And based on advice from the Government and Richard's experience, we know what are big issues for indigenous people."
Richmond has already been given grants totalling $5.5 million by the State and Federal governments, City of Melbourne and the AFL.
With the first soil due to be turned by May, the matter has become a priority. Talks will be held with ministers including Jenny Macklin, Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs; Kate Ellis, Minister for Sport; and Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson.
The club has tailored its proposal to reflect comments made by the government after its historic apology for the stolen generation.
"This program outline is not only about personal development that a lot of indigenous kids need, but it also gives them the leeway to go to school if they know they're getting a good reward at the end with three days at an AFL club," Tambling said.
"When they get to the club they'll be learning about lifestyle and coming out of their shell.
"Most kids I know, including myself, wouldn't have said boo when they first came to Melbourne. The support and help I received around the football club has helped me stand up in front of people and given me some direction.
"Hopefully they can take that back to their communities.
"They don't see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. They do what their parents have done. Whereas if you give them a chance like this, with life skills, it gives them something to look forward to."
The proposal includes a community gym, lecture theatre, catering facilities and oval re-alignment.

Good to hear the redevelopment is soon about to start. Sounds like what I was told about making the oval the same dimensions as the Dome maybe true is we are re-aligning it.
Where's the temporary "social club" meant to be now again?

Victorian AFL clubs to get government handouts
Jake Niall | March 17, 2008 | The Age
THE majority of Victorian AFL clubs are set to receive millions in additional funding from the State Government, with an announcement expected today.
Sources last night confirmed that the State Government was to announce that the bulk of Victorian clubs would receive grants for various projects, with an emphasis on community involvement and partnerships.
Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, James Merlino, is expected to make the announcement at Punt Road Oval today, alongside AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, with Richmond and Hawthorn also among the clubs to receive substantial additional funding.
Richmond, too, has a redevelopment plan that involves money from government and local government sources; it has been pledged $2 million from the State Government, another $2 million from the local council and confirmed a $2-million Federal Government grant three weeks ago.
Government funding, especially at state level, has become increasingly crucial to Victorian clubs with nearly all of them reliant on it for training and ground facilities.

Melbourne's AFL clubs to receive funding
March 17, 2008 - 2:43PM
Melbourne-based AFL clubs will receive $10.5 million of state government funding to help upgrade their facilities.
Premier John Brumby and AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou jointly announced the funding on Monday afternoon at Richmond's Punt Road headquarters.
The Tigers will receive the biggest slice of the pie, a $2.5 million grant to help upgrade Punt Road Oval.
The Kangaroos will receive $2 million towards the long-awaited development of a new football department headquarters at Arden Street.

NON-VICTORIAN clubs will soon be the ones lagging behind if their Melbourne rivals continue to reap the benefits of AFL and government handouts, according to Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg.
Yesterday's distribution of $10.5 million in funding to Melbourne clubs by the Victorian government was met with some incredulity by Trigg, who said the league's equalisation policies were already providing a great deal of propping up in the game's heartland without added government help.
"There's a very strong equalisation policy in the competition in terms of the special distribution fund," Trigg said. "Now with this sort of state government intervention, we are moving towards a situation where the non-Victorian clubs will be under pressure to catch up."
Traditional strugglers Richmond, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs were high on the list of clubs receiving financial support, but so, too, were the likes of Collingwood and Essendon, neither of whom appear to be anywhere near financial hard times.
"In one sense you say good luck to them (the Melbourne clubs), I'm not sitting here with jealousy," Trigg said. "But the non-Victorian clubs have also got some big challenges ahead in terms of our facilities for the next 10-20 years."
Trigg's words were supported last week by the release of AFL figures regarding football department spending by each club.
In 2007 the Crows ranked seventh out of 16 in terms of football expenses.

Stop lumping us with those cretins! Financial support? I would have thought coming up with a plan and executing it by raising money anywhere we can was good business. We raise brand awareness and give something to the community. Didn't realise we were asking for something for nothing. Journalists! :-\
Perhaps Adelaide need to get off their behind and do some work for their money.

$2.5 million funding for Richmond FC
richmondfc.com.au
9:36 AM Tue 18 March, 2008
“This injection of much needed funding will enable the ground to be restored to its former glory. Most importantly, this money will be used to repair the damaged oval so that the Richmond Football Club will once again have a permanent training base,” Mr Wright said.
Mr Wright said it is envisaged that these environmental initiatives will reduce RFC use of mains potable water by up to 50% - a massive 6 mega litres. Mr Wright added that in the future RFC will become a showcase for environmental sustainability.
These initiatives include:
- Relaying and reshaping the playing surface at PRO to include drought resistant
grasses, new drainage to minimise leakage and to capture water seepage for recycling.
- Harvesting water from the roof of the Jack Dyer Grandstand and other buildings at PRO.
- Utilising bore water.
- Introducing solar hot water systems.
- Using grey water on the surrounding gardens.
Work on the project is due to start within the next six months and this funding will significantly close the gap on total construction costs. The club is now in a position to prepare plans for council, Mr Wright said.

Not sure what Wright means by permanent given there'll still be cricket during the summer and we'll be training a lot of the time at the new Craigieburn facility anyway once it's built ??

Until we start winning games and pay off our debt we'll be lumped in with the rest. Lazy journalism as we are righting the ship by our own means while those other poorer clubs receive handouts just to survive. As you say RROFO applying for a grant isn't asking a handout. You do have to satisfy strict criteria to get them and the Government wants something in return in terms of community benefit. I have a mate who is vice-president of his tennis club and he's been going through this process with his local council for the past year to upgrade the courts and make them water efficient. Applying to grant schemes is common business practice.

Richmond launches redevelopment
richmondfc.com.au
2:13 PM Tue 17 June, 2008
Richmond Football Club CEO, Steven Wright, was today joined by Minister for Sport, The Hon James Merlino MP, and local member and Minister for Indigenous Affairs, The Hon Dick Wynne MP at the launch of the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval.
Matthew Richardson and rising star nominee Trent Cotchin were also present to observe the bulldozer as it came crashing into the concrete terraces at the northern end of the ground.
The Victorian Government has committed a total of $4.5 million to the Richmond Football Club.
Mr Wright said that the funding would go towards the development of a new indoor facility, ground improvements and drought proofing of Punt Road Oval.
The development will be accessible to the local community and will include the following:
- Community gym
- Indoor sports centre
- Meeting rooms
- Reinstatement of the Jack Dyer Grand Stand
- A new museum
Punt Road Oval is an iconic landmark in Melbourne. For the better part of the last century it served as the hub for the Richmond Community.
This injection of much needed funding will enable the ground to be restored to its former glory and state of the art building works will be at the forefront of the development.
“Most importantly, this money will be used to repair the damaged oval so that the Richmond Football Club will once again have a permanent training base,” Mr Wright said.
A key outcome of this funding will be the introduction of a significant environmentally sustainable management system for maintaining the oval surface and community facilities at Punt Road Oval.
“Our vision is that in 2008, the centenary of RFC’s involvement in the AFL and the AFL 150th Birthday, Punt Road Oval will once again become a centre of community life for the residents of inner Melbourne,” Mr Wright said.

Rich Pickings
Michael Gleeson | August 13, 2008
THE surrounds were stiflingly formal but Richard Tambling was unperturbed. He had a story to tell and he would tell it in his way.
It was his own story of a boy who grew up in the shade of a gum tree outside Darwin in a small community of tumbledown houses amid violence and alcohol.
Across from him in Canberra's Parliament House sat some of the most important figures in Australian politics. They listened in respectful silence.
By the time Tambling and his Richmond colleagues departed Canberra, they had received a commitment for $8.75 million in federal money for an indigenous learning centre to be built at Punt Road. The money will also in large part underwrite the $20 million total reconstruction of the club's headquarters, which will elevate Richmond to the elite of AFL club facilities.
"The idea for the centre was (Richmond chief executive) Steven Wright's, but it is fair to say Richard was extremely important in the whole process and securing the federal money," president Gary March said.
When the notion of constructing something for the indigenous community was first conceived, Wright approached Tambling and met an enthusiastic response.
"We wanted to involve the community in the centre as well as the indigenous people. It has worked pretty well with the Federal Government and Kevin Rudd saying sorry … It came out that indigenous people needed a bit of help and they were willing to do that," Tambling said.
"We went to Canberra and it was pretty daunting. A young kid coming from the bush walking into Parliament House, it wasn't anything I thought I would ever do.
"People in suits walking around — luckily, I took a pair of slacks and a T-shirt with me and didn't walk in there in a pair of jeans and a hoodie, which was good for me.
"It was difficult sitting there at the start but to have a background like mine, not many people would guess about anything I have grown up with, so it was easy to talk about because it was really just my life experience … Not many of these people in suits would realise something like this had happened until they saw and heard about it themselves."
Tambling became the club's champion for the cause because he essentially was their cause. Or at least kids such as him.
"We were conscious Richard had lived the experience first-hand and, after speaking to him, he was very eager to be involved," Wright said.
Tambling was brought up in an isolated community called the 15 Mile Camp, about 70 kilometres from Darwin.
"At the time, there were only 12 houses in the community where I grew up. It was all sort of iron and pretty much chicken wire for a house. There was a lot of alcohol and violence, so I grew up in a fairly colourful background," he said.
"I shared some of my experiences with the politicians — the sports minister and Simon Crean and people from Julia Gillard's office and some senators. I just told them the way I grew up and what it meant to me when I had a footballer come to my school when I was 11 years old.
"Even today, I remember it clearly the day the Wakelin boys came up and what that did for us as young kids. They came to my school and (former Fremantle player) Gary Dhurrkay came to my school. Gary … came from a remote community as well, so it gives you that little bit of hope and belief that you can make something of yourself because someone else has done it.
"Coming from an indigenous community, you don't get a look-in the same as a kid from, say, country Victoria in footy terms. The scouts aren't looking at the kids out in the Northern Territory region … because it is so isolated."
Tambling's story resonated with those in Canberra and the money was committed to pay for the learning centre that will be built on the third floor of the new grandstand at Punt Road, which will replace the derelict social club stand.
The football department, squeezed into decaying quarters under the old Jack Dyer Stand, will move into the new facility with expanded gyms, medical rooms, theatrettes and other essentials of a modern football club. The football department's space will increase from 300 square metres to 1000 and a museum will be constructed in the Jack Dyer Stand.
The oval will be widened to the dimensions of Telstra Dome and the new $8.5 million summer training base being built at Craigieburn will have an oval the size of the MCG. Both of these facilities will be constructed at a cost to Richmond of only $2.5 million, while the Federal Government is to contribute $8.75 million, the State Government $6.5 million, the AFL $2 million, local councils $5 million and the Craigieburn property developer $3 million.
"We could build a football facility and get away with spending about $10-12 million and you would have all the footy club needs, but the footy club is more than just the team," Wright said. "We exist to play football and win premierships but we exist because of the community, so it is important we remain connected to the community and give something back to the community. What we are building will help bring something to the community, in particular through the indigenous learning centre."
The centre will seek to run leadership and pre-employment programs for indigenous youth who would be brought to Melbourne as part reward for achievements such as school attendance. The types of programs available and the mechanics of how it would operate are still being worked out in collaboration with the AFL's indigenous programs co-ordinator, Jason Mifsud.
Operation of the program is likely to be out-sourced and sponsored but Richmond would provide the venue and facilities.
"If these kids do come down, it is not about bringing their talents out to make it to the elite level in football," Tambling said. "It could be in anything, not even in sport, it could be girls and boys but if these kids do make it to the elite level in whatever area they want to make it in, it is about personal development as much as bringing their talents to the table.
"It is about getting these kids to have self-belief and to learn a bit and if they don't make it at an elite level, they can go back to their community and become leaders back in their community and be role models in their community.
"Hopefully, I can relate to a few of them and tell them a bit about my background and what I had to go through. It wasn't laid out on the table, you had to take it and most of these kids don't believe they can. Coming from a community, they are shy, they don't have much self-belief and confidence."
Many Tiger faithful remain unsettled at the mention of Tambling's name, aching in the knowledge that there but for the grace of a recruiting choice went Lance "Buddy" Franklin. But while Franklin might be the foundation stone of an era of success at Hawthorn, he may never be as influential to his club as Tambling has already been for Richmond.

Great paragraph.
If my calaculations are correct we are recieving over 25.25 million dollars! That is fantastic! :gotigers
We will have some of the best facilities in the land and time to scope out the best young aboriginal players for skills, temporament and potential years before the rest of the competition.
With two grounds to use which mimic the two sizes of our home grounds we will be well prepared with team structures and rehersed plays in the future to suit the different sized grounds. Very exciting!

I've said it before and I will say it again and again
Richie Tambling is a quality young man and will be a very good player for the RFC. And more than that the RFC are very lucky to have him
That last sentence says it all IMO

I don't give a rats about that rubbish.
I want to know where and how the social club will be setup.
The setup at Windy Hill was pretty good.
Even Noble Park has got a good setup.
Indoor and outdoor access for socialising and wtf is happening with the JDF walk outside the current setup. That what I want to know Richmond ......
-
The new Social Club will be at the Northern end of the ground CUB. To the right of the Jack Dyer Stand in the first image. From memory it will have indoor and outdoor access. Not sure what's happening with the JDF walk. Presumably it's either incorporated with the plans of the Fed square look-a-like building or will be moved elsewhere.
I was told 2 weeks ago that they will now start digging up the turf to make the ground size the same as the Dome which will take 2 months to do.

Hopefully when finished this all attracts supporters all year round to Punt Rd and the club can gain extra revenue. Essendon's Hall of Fame is meant to be impressive. Hopefully ours will be too.
-
I've been told the reason the Punt Rd oval surface looks ordinary at the moment is they are about to start the oval realignment which will take around two months to do so there's no point trying to bring the surface back up to scratch. Training will be held at Vic Park for the meantime.

Tigers make key appointment
richmondfc.com.au
By Tony Greenberg Mon 02 March, 2009
Richmond has appointed Luke Murray as Indigenous Community Engagement Co-ordinator of its planned Australian Institute of Indigenous Learning and Development.
Murray, the older brother of Essendon’s Nathan Lovett-Murray, will officially start duties at the Club in mid-March.
He will be responsible for managing community involvement in the planning, development and implementation of the Institute.
His key areas of work are:
- To provide links to, engage and consult with the Indigenous community and organisations from the education, employment and training sectors.
- To provide advice on the content of the courses and programs to be run by the Institute.
- To liaise with the Federal and State Governments in respect to course programs.
- To oversee implementation of the RFC fostership program in the Northern Territory.
Given Murray’s skills set and connections within the Indigenous community, it follows that the Tigers also would be keen for him to take on a mentoring role with their current group of Aboriginal players.
“Steven (Wright) has mentioned to me about working with the young Aboriginal boys at the Club and that’s something I’d be very happy to do. I’d like to mentor them about what they’re doing outside of footy as well because that’s really important. Nathan’s done that in the last six months – he’s set up a record label and is starting to think about life after footy. That’s what I’d like to talk with Alroy, ‘Jonny’ and Richard about. Being professional footballers can open up so many doors for them and they can set themselves right up for the future.”
Finally, there’s another very good reason why Luke Murray is so delighted and excited about his appointment at Tigerland . . .
“My family is over the moon that I have been employed by the Tigers. My mother’s father, Maxwell Hood, played for Richmond back in the 40s. He was the back-up ruckman to Jack Dyer and I’m told was a handy player. Of course, Jack didn’t get injured too much, so my Pop didn’t get to play many games. Pop's fused ankle is a legacy of his time at the Tigers.
“He is Richmond through and through and I look forward to attending some games and Club functions with him,” he said.

Punt Road Redevelopment Update
richmondfc.com.au
By Richmond CEO Steven Wright Mon 15 June, 2009
The long-awaited redevelopment of Punt Road has taken a major step towards commencement, with the closing of construction tenders.
The Club, and its project manager, currently are meeting with the tenderers to finalise a price. It’s anticipated that within the next two weeks a contract will be awarded to a builder to get construction underway.
Typically, work begins two or three weeks after finalisation of the contract, so we would anticipate the redevelopment beginning in early July, if not sooner.
The redevelopment will provide the solution to the facilities’ problems that Tigerland has endured for the past 50 years. Once completed, not only will the Club boast state-of-the-art gymnasiums and football facilities, but also leading medical and rehabilitation amenities – one of the great needs in AFL football these days.
Additionally, at this stage it’s proposed that the Punt Road playing surface will be dug up at the end of the 2009 season and reconfigured to a size comparable with the Docklands Stadium. With the recent completion of the oval at Craigieburn, which is the same dimension as the MCG, our players will have two perfect-sized, top-quality grounds to train on in the future.
One of the key features of the redevelopment, aside from the football perspective, is our community and corporate social responsibility program, with the centre-piece being the Indigenous Institute. The Club is currently working closely with the Victorian, Northern Territory and Federal governments on finalisation of these programs. I can confirm that everything is going well to create what we hope will be one of the leading Indigenous Institute education and employment centres in the country.
Also, the Institute facilities will be co-shared with by the Club for our social activities. This will be fantastic for the Club and our members, as it will enable us to bring a number of our functions back to Punt Road. We’ll be able to host up to 300 people at a sit-down function, or 500 in a conference arrangement.

Does anyone know exactly what is happening with the redevelopment? It seems to be being delayed longer than anticipated (early July). I've also heard they want the Northern end of Punt Rd left open. Not sure then where the new Social club is meant to go if that's the case ???. The membership department are apparently going to be stuck in a caravan outside the ground while the construction is going on.

My understanding is the tender process for the preferred builder is almost done, works will start within a month of that being announced. I woulld think sometime in August

Work begins on Punt Road Oval
richmondfc.com.au
By Adrian Ceddia | Tue 25 August, 2009
Richmond Football Club has officially launched the construction of the $20 million redevelopment of Punt Road Oval.
Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Julia Gillard, had a tour of the Club’s current facilities at a special function last Saturday and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for the project.
“This is a very special partnership to redevelop Punt Road Oval, and it’s something the Australian Government has been proud to contribute $6.75 million towards,” she said.
“One of the reasons we’ve done that is we know these new facilities are going to make a contribution to closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.”
A feature of the new facility is the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development, to be named Korin Gamadji, which means ‘grow and emerge’.
The Institute will help close the gap for indigenous youth and young people by offering education and employment opportunities.
Outgoing Richmond CEO Steven Wright described the redevelopment as a “great football and community facility”.
“We started off with the board back in 2005 and we said we had to get these facilities back on track,” he said.
“With the support of Gary (March) and the board we’ve been able to talk to the Federal Government and get their fantastic support. The State Government has chipped in two amounts and the City of Melbourne and the AFL have also helped out.”
Senior Elder of the Wurundjeri Tribe, Aunty Joy Murphy, was also present at last Saturday’s launch to perform a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony.
“We hope that our indigenous people, our community, our players and the broader community, will grow and emerge much stronger than when they’ve started off in their lives,” she said.
“That’s what we see as the positives here at the new institute.”
The new facility at Punt Road Oval is due for completion toward the end of 2010.
Built over three levels, the facility will feature a community gym, indoor sports centre, meeting rooms, lecture theatre and a new museum, plus a state-of-the-art football department.

I think they've got a few of the locals mad, cutting down some trees. Good to see something finally happening.
-
Apparently they're knocking down the mound at the Northern end of the ground first so they can move the membership department there temporarily while the redevelopment is occurring. They'll then start knocking down the old Social club. I was told demolition will begin in 2 weeks.
-
The redevelopment has finally begun apparently.
The Tiger Den will operate from a temporary facility, just 20m away from the old shop site, in Yarra Park. The facility will be open weekdays from 10am-5pm.

Richmond Social Club Demolished
2009 RFC Annual Report
Richmond's iconic Social Club was demolished in late October to make way for the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval.
The prominent building will be replaced by a $20million facility, which will provide the solution to the facilities' problems Tigerland has endured for the past 50 years.
The redevelopment of Punt Road Oval will bring the football department up to an elite standard in the
AFL, as well as provide services and employment opportunities for members of the community.
Once completed, not only will the Club boast stateof-the-art gymnasiums and football facilities, but also
leading medical and rehabilitation amenities, and the capacity to host large functions and conferences.
The redevelopment will also feature a community and corporate social responsibility program, with
the centre-piece being the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development.
Richmond's new facility is expected to be completed in late 2010.

Just an update on the redevelopment at Punt Rd. They are well on their way into putting in the concrete foundations. There's now also a concrete wall along the boundary where the new building will be. In front of the Jack Dyer stand there's a massive long trench which I guessing is for the new drainage.

Some new pics of the plans from the Fighting Tiger magazine for those that haven't seen then.....
It is anticipated that the facility will be completed by November this year.
Standing three storeys tall, the Punt Road redevelopment includes state-of-the-art player amenities, community gym, indoor sports centre, meeting rooms, lecture theatre and museum, as well as housing the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development.
Punt Road Oval Redevelopment Fund
With construction well underway on the new Punt Road Oval facility, the Club is seeking the assistance of its supporters to donate money to the fit-out of the new facilities.
The Punt Road Redevelopment Fund provides all Tiger supporters with the opportunity to contribute to the redevelopment.
Supporters will be given the option to donate an amount equal to the cost of a piece of equipment required to fit out the new facility.
Donors will have the option to donate annually over a period of 5 years, and all donations will be tax deductible via the Australian Sports Foundation. All donors' names will go on a special logo honour board, to be placed in the new gymnasium and published in the Club's 2010 Annual Report.
A letter and pledge form will be mailed to members in the coming weeks.

-
You are kidding aren't you? :-\
-
Please Explain?
-
ummm, without the millions of dollars that came our way via government grants to fund the new facilities under the auspicies of the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development we would never have evolved from the Punt Rd ruins that have only recently made way, be grateful, VERY grateful :shh

are we getting a naming sponsor? whoever gets that sponsorshipd deal will get enormous exposure on Punt Road and Id assume we'd get a very decent 6 figure annual deal.

This is gonna help the Richmond football club HOW?
By creating an environment around the club that has a clear focus on DEVELOPMENT. Hopefully this facility will draw in to Punt Road some of the best PROFESSIONALS in training and skills development.
One of the biggest problems with our football list is the lack of development and asking what benefit there is to establishing a centre for training and skills development within the club simply baffles me.
BTW When world class sporting events have been scheduled at the MCG in the past one of my dreams was to establish a training base at Punt Road to learn from the best in other codes. When the cricket world cup and possibly the soccer world cup are played at the MCG I hope the club leverages it's prime location to host another elite sporting team. Just think for a second, would our coaches and off-field staff (medical, finess, physio, stats) learn anything from hanging around and watching the German soccer team team or the South African cricket team training? I continue to read stories about officials and coaches from AFL clubs going overseas to visit sporting teams to learn how to do things better and here we have the prime location to bring the best in the world in to our backyard.

Yes they are Stripes. They still at Punt Rd most days using the current facilities in the Jack Dyer stand and David Mandie pool building. We train at Punt Rd most days as well. Only the main closed session is at another venue such as Vic Park.

How does the development at Punt Rd compare with other clubs in Victoria? Is it better and bigger than the Bulldogs and Kangas atleast? Is it as big as Collingwoods?
....... What I want to know is who has the biggest? And does size matter?

It's not the size, it's how you use it. Read the article on the AFL website about Paul Chapman's hammies. The Geelong boys were doing their 'ice baths' by jumping into a bin full of ice. This was during their premiership years.
-
They have started construction on the outer exterior frame at the Southern end of the redevelopment...

Btw out of interest the pic from the RFC facebook page was taken on the day of the Tigers cub clinic last Thursday I believe. Not sure how accurate it is but I was told 780 kids turned up :o. So well done RFC :clapping.

Looks on schedule to be finished by November :thumbsup

I have some wonderful fond memories at Punt rd. My uncle, Keith Cleaver was a running trainner and Physio for the Tigers for many years in the 70's - 80's. He purchased a terrace on Punt rd (directly opposite Tigerland).
My great grandparents immigrated from the UK and began thier new life in Richmond (Lennox st), they were the last to leave before the highrise went up.
Because of my uncles affiliation with the club we were able to use Punt road for our family reunion in the late 80's. I felt proud and priveledged to enter those rooms and play on the oval.
The day that Jack Dyer was buried I took my son to Punt rd in his Richmond jumper, we stood on Punt rd and wept a tear as the great man was driven by for one last time. My son was fortunate enough to have had his image on the news and in the newpapers chasing the foooty around on top of Jack's number in the centre of the Punt Rd oval.
I know my son will have many more fond memories of the Tiger's and Punt rd to come in the future.

Great personal story aetherunknown. Welcome aboard OER :).

Put the first yellow stripe on the front facade last night, will try and get some pics tomozz and post them sat night.

theres been an extraordinary amount of rain over the last couple of months, maybe the project has fallen behind a little bit as a result of the weather.

It is anticipated that the facility will be completed by November this year.
If completion is late November then they still have 2.5 months to go. From the pics they seem to have the outside frame all done. It's now just adding the black with yellow stripes with the big left stripe already in place.
-
Noticed they've installed a section of the black backing behind the first yellow stripe. The contrast looks really good. Going to be an impressive looking building when it's finished.

Punt road is completely Yellow and Black. Makes the 'G' look like it's owned by the RFC if you look at it from Richmond station. There's so much colour it's almost over the top. Looks stuffing fantastic. :thumbsup

So true smokey. The jet black with the deep yellow stripes is very striking. Just proves again we have the best colours of any club :thumbsup.

Thanks richie
-
Have to say i'm not a fan of the design and i'd prefer the club spent $20m on a facility that actually came with a fully equipped gym instead of one that requires us members to chip in for new weights. But I hear the toilets are real noice...

I was at the Club today and have a photo taken from the other side of the new building ;D
Certainly isn't as "finished" as the view you get from Punt Road
I will load it onto the site tomorrow night when I have more time :thumbsup

Looking great.

Can I add (and I aint no builder) but I'd be very surprised if it is finished by late Nov early Dec - it is basically a shell inside ;D

That's all they could afford after being fleeced on trendy yellow and black colourbond panels :lol

As long as it's ready come March :thumbsup - Do tradies ever get their work done on time :nope
-
we need to buil bigger stands so we can have home games at punt... we could gain partnership with Virgan or big company that would suppot/ fund most of teh building with free sponsership aslong as it helps out with the stadium.. simliare to what the English soccer league cause we get teh same average croweds as they do so why not? :thumbsup
It can be done and is possible :whistle

There's not enough exposure for AFL worldwide to attract sponsorship like that compared to the Premier League which is broadcast around the world.
Carlton tried to upgrade Princes Park on their own as their home ground and it almost sent them broke

If the completion date for the new redevelopment is behind schedule and has been pushed back as has been suggested then it won't matter as you'd think we'll train more at Craigieburn or at least away from Punt Rd Oval until it's finished.
-

Melb Council has the final say on whether cricket stays or goes
The other thing of course is cricket needs another venue and perhaps it isn't ready either

From RFC twitter:
Q. how long until they finish the redevelopments?
A. should be over two stages, January and then March

fair dinkum if they kick the cricket off that is the end for me

Disappointing to read that.... actually if I wanted to be really harsh I'd use the term pathetic.
Overall you could argue that this "project" will be about 2 years late by the time it is finished
Every other bloody club that have had these types of redevelopments have got them done on time
As I said disappointing :-\
-
You forgot to mention the bit about the club spending $20m on new facilities yet for some reason they are asking the members for donations to fit out the new gym. Seriously, what the stuff is with that crap? Where did the $20m go? Which clown signed off on a $20m project that didn't include a fully equipped state of the art gym within the budget?
stuffing amateur hour at Dunce Road. They should rename the new facilities The Oakley-Nicholls Near Enough Centre of Sh!tulence.
But look at the outside!!!!!! :thumbsup :thumbsup :clapping :clapping 8) 8) :bow :bow :cheers
::)
-
The wet weather would have delayed construction in recent months but not by two years. The planning and tenure process took bloody ages whereas other clubs just got on with planning and building theirs. By January the players are starting to play intra-club matches in readiness for the NAB Cup. So whereas the plan was to have a full preseason at Punt Rd this summer, the players are going to spend the best part of another preseason training here, there and everywhere at mostly inferior facilities compared to other AFL clubs. Not good enough! March is when the admin staff move in.

c'mon WP, it aint exactly a lean to on the back of the scout hall we're talking. was a small matter of gathering funding and then permits being granted. not sure what world you know pal but that aint like shopping through 8 items or less. oh, and the wettest winter we've had in 10 years doesn't help construction deadlines either.

When you go through a planning process you do know dates when meetings with councils will be held and decisions finalised. I can understand construction being held up by the weather but we were a whole year behind schedule before the construction had even started. The club kept pushing the date back everytime you asked someone about it.

Exactly right - they got the first lot of funding from the State govt, AFL & Council during our 2007-2008 and then got the balance from the Federal govt early 2009 IIRC.... Actually go back further they were orginally talking about this being ready for our centenary year....
I appreciate the scope of the project but the fact that the thing has had more delays than a Metro train is extremely disappointing IMHO

Excellent pics OE. I bet the tradies got a bit coy thinking you were a building inspector with all the detailed pics you took. :lol

In the last pic was that one of the players doing laps? Connors or O'Reilly??
That was Connors doing a stack of 200m sprints on his own.

Apparently Admin is expected to be finished by Xmas and the rest by March 1st..

The $20 million Punt Road redevelopment is due for completion early into the new year.
The redevelopment will house the brand new Social Club being constructed on the third level of the new facility, with views overlooking the Punt Road Oval.
In previous years the Club has invited all members and supporters to head over to the Social Club after every home game at the MCG. Now, due to new licensing restrictions, only 2011 Social Club members will have access to this brand new facility.

:banghead :banghead so what does that mean to Coterie members who've renwed already and have been told they are supposedly guaranteed access to the Social Club after MCG home games.... will they or wont they be allowed in ??? :banghead :banghead
But apart from that - I have to say that is a staggering and disappointing decision, actually it is unacceptable - members deserve better
-
WP, 3121 membership says "Social Club membership with the ability to head back to the brand new facility at Punt Road after every home game". Giving it's a "entry level into coterie membership" then presumably the coteries will have access to the Social Club included.
Spewing myself. Not that I go to the Social club after games (been just a couple of times) but I was looking forward to see inside the new redevelopment when the new Social club opened.

I heard it was the other way around (players facilities ready by January; admin by March) but your source may be more reliable Magic.

Don't get me started on the 3121 Membership (which btw was Locker room in 2010) and what they'v done to Coteries for 2011 in particular what was Player Club :banghead :banghead
Don't worry MT - you'll get to see the new venue - I'll get you in :thumbsup

A couple of interior pics from The Fighting Tiger magazine....
The football facilities, located on two levels in the new facility, are expected to be ready for use in January 2011. The third level, which will house the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning & Skills Development (Korin Gamaji Institute), is also expected to be completed early next year.

A friend of mine and RR's scored a tour of the inside of the redevelopment the lucky so-and-so lol.
She said the end of the building at the Brunton Avenue end (below) is the new and much larger Tiger Den shop. So everyone who walks to the 'G and back will pass right by its front entrance.
She also said the main kicking/training room is massive and the Social club looks fantastic.

It's not new, but here is an aerial view from November 20.

MT,
Looking at that aerial view, how is the club planning to enlarge the oval to Etihad size?
At the practice wicket end, I can see how they might expand there, but at Punt Road, are they planning to remove the seats in front of the old stand? Realign the goals? Will it still have funny shaped wings/pockets?

I think Muscles it will look something like this using wayne's pic and the ratio of Docklands' dimensions (hard to tell what is exactly 159.5m x 128.5m on the pic).

Thanks for that MT! I can see it now. I never thought an Etihad sized oval would fit as easily as that. I'm also suprised that the current oval is as long as it is. I always thought it was shortish. Must be the funny shapes of the pockets after the widening of Punt Road.

I always thought it was short length wise as well Muscles but you're right it must just look deceptively short. Here's the architectual plans btw showing how the reshaped oval is meant to fit.

Due to key electrical works being undertaken at ME Bank Centre, Punt Road Oval, this Thursday (February 10), in the final stages of the ground’s major redevelopment, Richmond’s reception area, administration building, membership department, and the Tiger Den merchandise shop, will be closed all day.

Sounds like they are onto the final stretch and on schedule for a March 1 finish.

I walk past it every day and it doesn't look close to finished to me. :-\

Aesthetically it doesnt look all that flash IMHO. It looks a bit cheap to be honest, I suppose what counts is what happens inside the building nevertheless I dont think the building fits in the environment. I also think its going to date real quick.
-
I like it Ramps. Reckon it's imposing and will become quite iconic in it's location over time. And I enjoyed the time-lapse video - put the size of the construction task into perspective. I also didn't realise how much bigger the new facility is compared to the old one.
-
I think it would have looked better with a nicer quality facade. That corrugated iron look makes it look cheap.

It's bold, modern and all Richmond.
Would you rather them have gone with a north melbourne style upgrade?

I think I know what FLAGS and Infamy are saying.
To the club's credit the building's grown on me a lot actually - it's unique, eye catching and distinctly richmond. It's much, much better looking than I anticipated from the mock up. :thumbsup
But yeah, a part of me still thinks it looks a bit garrish/cheap and wouldn't mind a more "traditional" looking building to go with the ground, the trees and the MCG. Traditional doesn't mean you can't be stylish - and it certainly wouldn't date as quickly.

Exactly CUB. You have to see it in the flesh to get a proper picture of what it looks like. The pics on the web don't do it justice and how large the interior is. One thing the building does do is attract the attention of those travelling past along Punt Rd or Brunton Avenue. Better than having a dull square box design like North or Carlton that a dime a dozen. Remember the black with a number of yellow stripes is meant to represent the players linking arms as they sing the theme song so it's uniquely ours.
Ramps always wanted the original garage door design ;D.

Brad Miller: "Just finished our first weights session in the new facility on punt rd! You can visibly see a change in the players."
Daniel Jackson: "have u seen Nahas walking around with that stick in hand? Apparently it's so he can press the button for the 3rd floor!"
-
So the boys have a new weights facility in there.
I would expect to see a vast improvement in the size of the more scrawny players then. :gotigers

it's not that they're new weights but that I'd imagine more weights so all players can freely use them anytime and not have to wait in line for the use of just one miserly dumbell.
If this scenario hasn't been true then why have we been the skinniest club for such a long time? Why do some of our players seem to have such small arms compared to other teams?
It's no wonder our boys get pushed off the ball so easily.

Brian Taylor just on 3aw now said the $20m new facility is great but then bagged the fact that you have to fight over a "porthole" in the social club on the 3rd floor to look out onto the ground. Whoever designed it should have put a ceiling to floor window for people to look out of and admire the view. Caro thought it strange as well especially if a eventual Richmond reserves side plays games at Punt Rd.

Definitely agree with this, for $20mil we should have been able to make it with a glass facade, even by still keeping it yellow & black glass

Plenty of time to make some modifications so the upper class supporters can have a good view.

No news, but there isn't much construction going on inside. Looks pretty much ready to go, perhaps a few admin offices that need finishing but that's it. Someone at my table mentioned that Brendan Gale said to him not to touch any black walls, so shows how recent some of it has been.
The big foyer/match prep room (where everyone gathered for drinks at the start of the night), player's gym & social club all look finished to me.
-
It's not all finished wont be for another few weeks
The other end of the building to where we were tonight is still being worked on
One stair case & walls that i saw still needed painting ;D
In other words the half of the building we saw last night is 99% finished the other half is still a WIP

We've been showing off the new facility to the media today so it must now be entirely completed :thumbsup.

The bricks & pavers will be re-laid once all the building works are complete.
The area outside the building running down to the boundary fence is still just gravel. It has to be sealed etc once that is done the bricks & pavers will be re-laid. That's what i got told at the FTF dinner
The actual building maybe finished now (or 95% done) but there is still a fair bit of "clean up" to do :thumbsup

Indigenous Institute opens
richmondfc.com.au
By Tony Greenberg
Fri 01 Apr, 2011
History was made at the ME Bank Centre today (April 1) when the Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI) opened its doors for the first time, hosting 33 Indigenous participants in a Level 1 coaching course.
The KGI will focus on Indigenous leadership development, training and employment, and some key appointments, set to be made in the coming weeks, will give the Institute further momentum.
Following a traditional “Welcome to Country” ceremony from respected Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Joy Murphy, a day-long, Level 1 Indigenous coaching course kicked off in the Institute centre.
The course was run by the Indigenous Program Manager at AFL Victoria, Leon Egan, who admitted to being “blown away by the facilities” on offer at the ME Bank Centre’s Korin Gamadji Institute.
“Very honestly, there was a lot of skepticism from the Aboriginal community on what it was going to look like, how user-friendly it would be, and so forth. But the significant thing for me is that today is the first day we’ve been able to access it, and we’re first cab off the rank,” Egan said.
“I’m excited about the fact that we’ve been given this opportunity to host a Level 1 coaching course - Indigenous specific - for our community . . . that’s fantastic.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to go and visit a lot of clubs and have a look at their facilities and, from a Melbourne-based club’s perspective, this is the best that I’ve seen.”
The Institute’s level one coaching course attracted guest speakers such as triple Hawthorn premiership player, former Hawks’ coach, and now the AFL’s Director of Coaching, Peter Schwab; three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player, and now coach of suburban club, Avondale Heights, Chris Johnston; AFL Community Engagement Manager, Jason Mifsud; Richmond’s Head of Development, Tim Livingstone; and Tiger assistant coach Danny Daly.

I found this article from an architectural website discussing the Punt Rd redevelopment with some pics of the facility included ....
See full article and pics here: http://architprojects.blogspot.com/2011/09/punt-road-oval-redevelopment.html
"This facility is the next instalment in the club’s rich identity. It is a positive image, literally building a winner’s circle, with the elevations drawing inspiration from post-game traditions. We pictured the team standing in a circle with arms intertwined as a TV cameraman spins in the centre, capturing them as they sing: “Oh, we’re from Tigerland, a fighting fury, we’re from Tigerland!”
The design development was made more interesting by the contributions of Richmond’s passionate fan base. The importance of legibility of the club identity was spelt out loud and clear, when a preliminary design was published in the Herald Sun, prompting an online furore from the Tiger faithful – the playing strip motif was going the wrong way on one side of the building! The people had spoken, and were acknowledged through the refinement of the design."

Although I love the inside, the outside is just ok... Could have been a lot better looking.
Looks a bit like a black shed and the red makes it look like Essendon is also training at the facility.
-
I pass it every day and it looks great. It's very noticeable.
Agree about the Essendon comment though, hate the red. I just remind myself that it's also the indigenous institute and reds on the indigenous flag. Makes it bearable ... just.

Time to change the aboriginal flag.

that is the only reason the Red is there - to represent the indigenous flag at a building that houses the Indigenous Training Institute

And red is our 'third' colour due to the Tiger's tongue on our logo ;).

True
But being the building that houses the Indigenous Institute - it was very important that red was included in the colour scheme... ;) ;D

Casting a shadow at tree of life
Martin Flanagan
The Age
April 21, 2012
THIRTEEN young Koori women sit with Belinda Duarte at the scarred tree on top of the hill overlooking the MCG.
Duarte is the inaugural director of the Korin Gamadji Institute which is based in Richmond's newly expanded facilities at Punt Road. The MCG is on Wurundjeri land and ''Korin Gamadji'' are Wurundjeri words meaning grow and emerge. The 13 young women are among 100 youths attending two programs being run that day.
At the same time as Duarte is gently leading the young women in a discussion to do with wellbeing, Richmond indigenous player Shane Edwards and teammate Ben Griffiths are taking another group for a nutrition course.
In the Richmond gym, assisted by volunteers from Athletics Australia, Richmond boxing coach John Vickery - father of Tyrone and a man with a crushing handshake of the Ted Whitten variety - is putting another group through a boxing session.
Belinda Duarte's father was a Pole who emigrated to Australia in his youth and fought with the Australian army in Vietnam. Her mother was a Wotjobaluk woman from north-west Victoria.
A quiet, modest woman, she says she was brought up to be ''very aware'' of her cultural heritage. A great uncle, Robert Kinnear, won the Stawell Gift in 1883 and Duarte started Little Athletics when she was seven. She tells the young women sitting around the tree that sport was her anchor, her ''safe place'', growing up. ''It kept the highs and lows of the external world at bay.''
She pursued athletics for the next 20 years, trialling as a heptathlete for the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. During this time, in addition to going on ''a journey around my own cultural identity'', she acquired an education degree from Ballarat University. An employment history including both AFL Sportsready and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission led her to join the KGI last year. The question, she says, is, ''How do we best utilise this space for the next generation?''
Richmond media manager Simon Matthews says: ''We obviously aren't experts in this area, but we want to use the Richmond/AFL brand, our people and these facilities to create a unique and innovative offering for the young people that come through the KGI.'' To this end, Richmond sponsors KGI through operational support and Belinda Duarte sits as a member of the Tigers' executive. The KGI's main room is named after Maurice Rioli, the Tigers' indigenous champion and Norm Smith medallist from the 1980s.
''There is no other facility like this in Victoria,'' says Duarte. And it's not just anywhere, the KGI is at an AFL club which neighbours the MCG. ''It engages people just by being here,'' says Duarte.

Richmond opts to rip up Punt Rd Oval turf mid-season
Michael Warner
From: Herald Sun
May 30, 2012
RESURGENT Richmond will drive its push for the finals from Craigieburn and Victoria Park.
The Tigers will embark on a $1.9 million redevelopment of their Punt Rd Oval, leaving players seeking a new training venue from early next month.
Club chiefs last night defended the disruption to a season shaping as Richmond's best since the club last played finals in 2001.
"The timing is never ideal but now is the right time to move," Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale told the Herald Sun.
"There will be some short-term inconvenience, but it is simply something that needed to be done for the long-term benefit of the club."
The Tigers are reconfiguring the Punt Rd ground into an Etihad Stadium-sized oval without the impediment of cricket wickets.
The shabby surface slopes almost 2m down to the Brunton Ave end and is prone to flooding.
"Work will commence on the oval next month and we expect that will mean our players can be back training on the ground by November to give them full access for the 2013 pre-season," Gale said.
"It is imperative the surface is available for pre-season which is when it is used most by players - that is why it makes sense to push ahead with these works now."
The Tigers had shared the Punt Rd ground with the Richmond Cricket Club for more than a century, but recently convinced the cricketers to shift.
Richmond's pre-season campaigns have been constantly unsettled by the unavailability of the Punt Rd ground and the hardness of the centre square.
Former coach Terry Wallace blamed a spate of injuries during his time at the Tigers on having to train on substandard surfaces, while AFL boss Andrew Demetriou once described the Punt Rd ground as "crap".
Gale said last night: "The first phase of the Fighting Tiger Fund provided us with the financial support to reduce our debt by $1 million and - combined with AFL support - provide the necessary funding for us to reconfigure and resurface Punt Road Oval," he said.
The club has raised $3.2 million since the Fighting Tiger Fund was launched and will hold another major function on Saturday night in its bid to reach $6 million.
Richmond has an existing partnership with the Hume City Council to train several times a year at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn, 25km from Punt Rd.
Victoria Park in nearby Abbotsford is the former home of Collingwood.

Benny Gale was on SEN this morning talking about the Punt Rd Oval resurfacing...
Tigers hit the road
By Paul Daffey
Wed 30 May, 2012
RICHMOND chief executive Brendon Gale says it's necessary to move the club's training venue mid-season if the ground development at Punt Road is to be ready by pre-season training.
Richmond will train at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn and Victoria Park from early June because of the $1.9 million redevelopment at Punt Road.
Gale said the club owes its players the opportunity to provide the best oval on which to train.
The redevelopment is due to be completed in early November, just after the players have returned for pre-season training.
"It might surprise people in footy but the guys don't spend a hell of a lot of time on the track at this time of year," Gale told SEN's Morning Glory program.
"They get smashed during the matches. It's then about recovery - a bit of spit and polish.
"We believe the oval redevelopment is such an important part of our future.
"It's the players' most important piece of equipment.
"We owe it to them to get the best possible oval to prepare on."
At the moment the ground slopes 1.6 metres towards the Brunton Avenue goals and it has an eight-metre cricket wicket area.
The Richmond Cricket Club has now moved to new facilities in Waverley.
Gale said the poor soil profile at Punt Road means it fails to drain at an acceptable level.
"Punt Road in its present state has run its race," he said.
The redevelopment oval will be the same dimensions as Etihad Stadium. "To the centimetre," Gale said.
The club would like the ground to be the same dimension as the MCG, the Tigers' home ground, but the lack of space at Punt Road prevents such a move.
"We're limited with the land. By doing it this way we're getting every millimetre out of the space available," Gale said.
"By having it the same size as Etihad, it will be so superior to what we have now."
Gale told the Herald Sun the redevelopment had been made possible by funds raised by the Fighting Tiger Fund.
"The first phase of the Fighting Tiger Fund provided us with the financial support to reduce our debt by $1 million and - combined with AFL support - provide the necessary funding for us to reconfigure and resurface Punt Road Oval."
The club has raised $3.2 million since the Fighting Tiger Fund was launched and will hold another major function on Saturday night in its bid to reach $6 million.
Richmond has an agreement with the Hume City Council to train several times a year at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn, which is 25km from Punt Road.
Victoria Park in nearby Abbotsford is the former home of Collingwood.

so when do you suggest the work is done?
-

"We're limited with the land. By doing it this way we're getting every millimetre out of the space available," Gale said.
C'mon Benny, get on the phone to the Vic Roads. Get them to run Punt Rd underground and we build on top. We might even be able to chuck in a couple of hundred grand towards it. Or that footpath on the west side of Punt Rd from Brunton Ave to up Yarra Park, does it really need to be there? Hold some ceremony for piggy doyle to dig the first bit of the resurfacing. Inflate his ego. Make a little statue of him or something. He'll hand over the footpath.

Punt Rd Resurface
Richmond’s famous Punt Road Oval is about to undergo a major facelift, with resurfacing and reconfiguration works bringing it to Etihad Stadium proportions in size. The support generated by the Club’s Fighting Tiger Fund has made this key project possible.
The redevelopment of Punt Road Oval will begin this week (week commencing June 18). Importantly, the new state-of-the-art surface will be completed in time for the start of the 2013 pre-season - the most critical time of the year for training. Once completed, the redevelopment will provide a major boost for the players’ training.
Tiger fans’ co-operation and understanding during this period will be greatly appreciated.

The crucial redevelopment of the Punt Road Oval surface has started, with the ground going “under the knife”.
Over the next few months, the oval will be resurfaced and reconfigured, to bring it in line with Etihad Stadium dimensions.

Richmond trained at Fawkner Park on Tuesday and the club is getting used to a somewhat nomadic lifestyle.
The team has been forced to train at different venues in recent weeks due to the redevelopment and reconfiguration of the Punt Road Oval.
But Grigg said the players were enjoying training at different venues.
"The boys have a bit of fun with it, training around the places.
"Obviously, the redevelopment is going to be a short-time inconvenience for a long-term gain.
"We’re really excited to have Punt Road the same size as Etihad (Stadium)."

Coburg Oval is barely passable as a VFL venue certainly wouldn't be using it as a training ground
Our 2nd traning venue is supposed to be Craigieburn, the gfacility that was built for us for free.

Richmond want out of Cragieburn, I think this is going to be used as an excuse to pull out altogether when Punt Rd is ready.

If you are talking about the state of the ground that might be true, but we would only have ourselves to blame. Although we contributed no money, we were involved in the planning stages of this project.
$10 million spent on it, most of it taxpayers and ratepayers money. I'm not so sure that Richmond have been living up to their end of the bargain when it comes to Craigieburn.

PM opens Richmond indigenous centre
Chris Hingston
The Age
August 12, 2012
Richmond Football Club has transformed a small part of Tigerland into an institute aiming to kick-start the lives of young indigenous Australians.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard today officially opened the Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI), inside Punt Road Oval's Maurice Rioli Room.
The room will be the heart of the new institute - inside the wooden floor is shaped to represent the banks of the Yarra, the walls are decorated by Koori Heritage Trust-donated art, and a picture of Tiger champion and indigenous hero Rioli hangs prominently.
Korin Gamadji means "grow and emerge" in the Woi Wurrung language and the institute hosts leadership camps and provides training and education opportunities to young indigenous people.
KGI director Belinda Duarte said the institute had already helped more than 1,500 young indigenous people from Victoria and Central Australia in the last 12 months.
She said KGI was about providing possibilities.
"There have been some excellent outcomes already but we are convinced there is so much more this facility can do," she said.
"It's just the beginning in so many ways," she said.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard launched the institute, accompanied by partner Tom Mathieson – proudly sporting his Tigers scarf.
Ms Gillard, who supports the Western Bulldogs, joked she hadn't worn her red, white and blue scarf inside the Tiger's home "out of respect for Richmond".
She said the institute was a place of hope and possibility.
"From this special place, young indigenous people will indeed grow and emerge," she said.
Reconciliation was not just about big gestures, such as the national apology, she said.
"Equally important is the Aboriginal or Islander kid who learns to read and write. Who gets that training certificate or university degree … these are the little victories that make the truly big victories possible."

Don't know for sure, but I would think there is also Canberra money going into the Institute for running costs as well.
Think we get a benefit even if it is in an indirect manner as small as learning how to handle young players.

Not sure how these things usually work, but I see Punt Road oval every week as I catch the train from Richmond Station. For the past few weeks it looks like there has been 0 progress, just dirt(?) piles all over the ground
-
The piles move. There were practically no piles last night when I went past. The drainage pipes seem to have disappeared so I presume they are in the ground now. Looking really good to me. :thumbsup

Depending on the stage and scope of the works, sometimes there needs to be periods of compaction where the ground will either be left to settle or subject to heavy machine just running over and over it. In either case it can appear that little or no work is being done but in fact is. Not saying this is the case but it could be expected at some point.

The new Punt Road Oval playing surface is taking shape.
Concrete guttering around the oval perimeter has been laid, and the fence has been constructed. Irrigation is almost complete, with the new turf to be rolled out next month.
As part of the ground’s reconfiguration, more than 3000 cubic metres of soil has now been removed from the site.
The Club expects the surface to be available from late December.

Hope this is true off BF:
3AW Rumour File this morning had a bloke ring in saying the Bumbers new facility at Tulla has been declared structurally unsound and has to be dismantled and re-built. He finished off by saying "Thats what happens when you accept the cheapest quote" He sounded legit.
Would be a peeer if it is true:thumbsu:

Given there's no training over the Christmas-New Year period (late December), it'll now mean we won't be training on Punt Rd Oval until the new year. So presumably back to Vic Park and school and university ovals when preseason training starts in November.

Have to say it's pretty poor that it wont be ready until late Dec,

By the look of the ground and the condition of the jumpers I would suggest that is very very very early on in that game!!

Could not have been any later than the first clearance, for a moment I thought it was a third man up in the first rucking contest but it seems they are attempting to mark. Either that or it's a touched up B&W shot.
Anyway great to see the Tigers controlling the 2 best roving positions on their home turf.

I went down to Punt Rd yesterday and took a couple of photos of the re-surfacing.
At the moment they are dumping huge amount of sand for the base. It looks more like a beach than a footy ground at the minute.
One thing I didn't realise is one of the flanks comes right up to the footpath along Punt Rd itself with no boundary fence (as can be seen in the first photo). We might end up with a few footies blocking and hitting traffic lol.

Isn't there going to be goals and a net behind where you mentioned the footpath being close?

Tony, Went to the US Masters with an organised golf tour quite a few years ago. Playing it would be my ultimate dream but you've gotta know somebody's Grandaddy to even come close to a round of 18. I still have my programme from the event. "Golden Bell" (12th) is the most beautiful and lethal golf hole I have ever seen.

Believe me I tried to hook up but failed miserably. A trip to Augusta even for a guided tour should be on every mad golfers bucket list. St Andrews is good though as you can play there anytime. All you have to do is book a round.

I was down at Punt Rd today and took a couple of snaps. The oval is virtually all covered in grass now apart from a small section about 25m out from the northern end goals. They've just now got to keep watering it. The Club expects to be training on it after the Christmas break.

It's due to the nitrogen in the dog pee. Male dogs tend to pee in many different places to mark territory, where as female dogs prefer to pee in the same area, thus concentrating dog pee (nitrogen) in all the one place. It's the same effect as over-fertilisation.
I knew reading all those useless fact columns and New Scientist mags would come in handy one day. :thumbsup

Shouldn't have let the dogs on
-
The weirdest part of the ground is where the concrete guttering comes right up to the Punt Rd footpath (you can see it in one of the photos). Firstly the oval level is about a foot lower than the footpath level so hello potential lawsuit if there's no fencing. If the wire fencing is to remain then spectators won't be able to walk around outside of the oval where this concrete guttering is.
-
These seem to be very serious concerns and if true then its becoming in the finest sense a fiasco. For the money spent things need to have been better organised and planned. If these things are true then heads should roll. You cant spend in excess of a million bucks of members funds and have this type of stuff.
-
The yellow grass is the area that has been ripped up. It must have not taken and died and so needs to be relaid.
The concrete guttering that is right up against the Punt Rd footpath can be seen to the right in this pic:
http://oneeyed-richmond.com/images/redevelopment/031212picn1.jpg
Realistically the ground even when finished will be unsuitable for VFL games in its present state. There's no separate away changerooms and showers for a visiting team and umpires (the RFC museum will be under the old grandstand where the old rooms were) while the concrete guttering part alongside Punt Rd gives the impression the new realigned oval was designed to be purely a training ground rather than one that hosts lower grade matches.
Maybe these are questions for the Board at the upcoming AGM?
-
Was at Punt Road last night for a Tommy Hafey Club Function and in the car park there was quite of number of rolls of new turf ready to be put down. There were a number of blokes pulling up some of the turf at 6.30pm ;D
As for it being suitable for VFL matches I wouldn't worry about that as they have over 12 months to sort through all those logistics. I would think the biggest issue is there are no public tiolets ;D

Checked it out on Tuesday night
The area down the Brunton Avenue is looking good as it looks "knitted"
The area near the Car park end which was relaid still looks a bit scratchie as it clearly hasn't knitted yet but certainly was looking nice & green, plenty of watering from this new re-cycled water set up they have + plus some good old fashioned rain and it should be good to go mid January

The area near the Car park end which was relaid still looks a bit scratchie as it clearly hasn't knitted yet but certainly was looking nice & green, plenty of watering from this new re-cycled water set up they have + plus some good old fashioned rain and it should be good to go mid January
Looks like we're getting a bit of rain in the coming days, too.

The type that will hopefully prevent the ball from Jackson,s precise footskills to hit another car on Punt road again.

:lol
Also the type of fence that will also prevent dopey passes by accidentally walking off the edge of the footpath and falling down the one foot drop to the concrete gutter and oval grass surface thereby preventing a lawsuit against the RFC for negligence.

Seriously, hope they don't use it for a few more weeks, important too let sew properly and more importantly strongly
It may look like it's ready but a fortnight go it looked patchy in places and in light of there not having been much rain got to wonder how deep the roots are now

will be interesting to see how it holds up to traffic. it looks a bit patchy and dry, so you would have to question whether the roots have established adequately

Yep, Punt Rd = Sacred Ground and nothing else comes close. Mud, weeds, or lush grass, it will always be Sacred Ground.

To make sure there arent any issues with the turf only the duds should be allowed to train on it for the first 2 or 3 weeks.

Having seen the latest pics you may be right WP. I don't know for sure but I'm also hearing around the traps we may not start training on it until the end of Jan. Maybe a question for RFCO when he returns from his Christmas/New Year's break.

Just pulled the first ripe tomato off my tree today. Feel free to chuck any horticulture questions this way :cheers
-
Dwaino...any ideas how i can cultivate more of my venus fly traps?
-
Grow them next to your cannabis sativa to overlap your hydroponic set up and to keep the bugs away from your harvest. Seasol Powerfeed may also be beneficial. Remember just a cap full in your 10lt watering can :shh

Pretty sure I heard at the AGM they were talking about mid to late Jan because the turf laying part of the "project" was a few weeks behind schedule because of the rains we had Oct/Nov

Will be 2015
Why is that :huh
Said at the AGM that the facilities are not up to standard to host games and that they will need to spend approx $1mil to bring it up to standard.
Currently, there are no opposition change rooms, no public tiolets, no decent food facilities - this means the "facilities" are not up to standard and that until these things are corrected VFL games can't be played there
The said at the AGM that they will being doing the works but is a case of determining when and they said it was more likely to happen in late 2014 so the grounds ready for 2015.
-
$1m? What a con job

thats what I was thinking , what are they planning to build there, the taj mahal :lol

How can they they use Vic park? Would need to spend about $10 to match their facilities! ;D

Think about it they will need to build change rooms somewhere, they can't use the old ones inthe Dyer stand because that's the new museum. So ....
Public tiolets - outside oft he structure they will need the appropriate plumbing if you'll pardon the pun
About a $1 mil sounds about right

Its actually more along the lines of, fix up Jack Dyer Stand, add turnstiles/gates, add more fencing, create more standing room available, make more seating available, put in bench for teams, upgrade change rooms, upgrade canteen facilities + public toilets.

I wouldn't, we've down that road, it is one of the reasons(not the main one) we've carried the debt we had. They borrowed to fund the pool and and offices just on 10 years ago
They've worked to hard to get of the debt, need to look at others ways to fund it. Also don't want investment in the footy side of things being compromised by borrowing

Respectfully disagree
Back then we did not have 50k + members, sponsorship was negligible, AFL dividend was not as great etc etc
We need VFL games @ Punt Road ASAP
Whether we fund via debt or other means it needs to happen
Our debt is what ? 2-3 million ? , i personally am in for nearly that !!

You make a valid point but I would argue that all those things you've mentioned that are on the rise eg sponsorship, more members are the things that are helping provide the extra spend in the footy dept. not forgetting the FTF is not going to be the massive money raiser it has been.
Agree they have to get the VFL games at Punt Road as soon as practical but I don't want our ability to properly fund and field our own VFL side or the number of development coaches we have for players to be compromised because we've gone into debt again.
Also, it's not like we are talking indefinitely we are talking 12 months max a small inconvenience to get it absolutely right
-

Agree footy dept spend comes first, but TFTF is continuing, raised more then we had hoped for, yes 6m was the target but I dont think that was the realistic target !
Maybe its just me !
I am moving to Melb in Jan 14 for the first time after being a member for 23 consecutive years & want to see first class footy @ PRO NOW !!!

Did they paint a Tiger logo on?
Nope, but it's got a painting of a mythical beast. They say it's as big as four cats. And it's got a retractable leg so it can leap up at you better. And it lights up at night, and it's got four ears - two of them are for listening and the other two are just kind of backup ears. And its claws are as big as cups, and for some reason it's got a tremendous fear of stamps. It's got magnets on its tail, so if you're made out of metal it can attach it to you. And instead of a mouth it's got four arses.

And its claws are as big as cups, and for some reason it's got a tremendous fear of stamps. It's got magnets on its tail, so if you're made out of metal it can attach it to you. And instead of a mouth it's got four arses.
;D dwaino, you're a thinker aren't you.

The players must be loving the surface. :)
Great achievement by club and it's supporters.

Probably not as yet... It would be a tad hard at this stage

Is that Benny on the Boundary with a Coffee in his hands?
The ground markings look fantastic and although as Mrakov said it looks a little dry, It looks very even and free of Caddy Shack style Gopher holes.

Yep think they need to be very careful not to "over use" it and thereby chopping it up too much. Very dry January we've had in Melb so far
-
the surface will be ok if they have a decent watering system in place. itll be interesting to hear what the players think about the surface, afterall they are the ones who will be training on it.

OK Don Burke :thumbsup

It has an excellent watering system it uses the same re-cycled water system that they use over at the MCG but still need to be careful if the root system hasn't knitted as deeply as it needs to would chop up very easily with lots of heavy traffic

Who needs to go to Swinburne when we have this thread. WP, you should add this forum to Open Universities and make some coin for the forum. ;D
I'm thinking of applying for a Gig at Royal Melbourne thanks to OER's Punt Road Oval redevelopment & Indigenous institute [merged] thread. In fact it is already in my resume under professional Development. :lol

We should've stayed off it till May IMO

Thanks for sharing these pics one eyed. From what i understand it was a closed session today, and really wanted to get there and see the ground get used for the first time.Unfortunately work wasnt so encouraging of this idea ,plus it being a closed session didnt help..so thanks for sharing
-
OK Don Burke :thumbsup
Your Welcome Mr Pipe
-
Rance said the surface was still loose under foot during training
They wanted Etihad they've got it
:pray no injuries from getting on it too early
-
if its loose underfoot they shouldn't train on it. every time the turf moves you disturb the root system and this just means it takes longer to establish properly
-
who is jams mowing?
new kid on the mowing block?
Well seeing that the last mower moved onto "greener" pastures[West Coast rookie],Someone had to step up.

Don't think it has been mentioned on here yet, but in the Saturday HUN it said that we've just received $977k funding for the Indigenous Institute.
Richmond’s Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI) has received over $970,000 in funding from the Federal Government to continue its successful Richmond Emerging Aboriginal Leaders (REAL) program.

The funding is for the Indigenous Institute, the colours of the Indigenous Flag are Black, Yellow and Red, hence why the builing has red on it. It has nothing to do with Essendon. It is there to recognise what the Institute is about and what it stands for

Does this mean will be eventually be leaders in recruiting & developing very talented indigenous footballers?

I want to see a neon light thing over the Redevelopment with a prowling tiger on the move. A similar sign to the old Skipping Girl Vinegar Sign type concept. Imagine driving past Punt Road at 10pm at night and watching a Tiger prowling along the top of the development about to maul something.
-
Yeah but what is it planning to maul?
The supporters' hopes and expectations?

Tigers to present to the UN on indigenous issues

RICHMOND is set to send a four-person contingent to New York to present as the first sporting club at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
The Tigers will share the journey of the Punt Road-based Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI) at the forum, which they will attend in partnership with the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples.
They'll also present on the establishment of the Dreamtime at the 'G game, which has been celebrated in an annual fixture between Richmond and Essendon for 13 years.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to share our work on the world stage," Richmond general manager of communications and marketing Simon Matthews said.
"We are incredibly proud of what the club, and particularly the staff of the Korin Gamadji Institute, deliver every day to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities.
"It's important that we also acknowledge the formal and informal partners across community, corporate and government who help shape, support and guide the work we do as a collective."
The KGI has delivered "highly-unique and innovative leadership and well-being programming for young Indigenous boys and girls" over the past 10 years.
It sets out to deliver programs to help educate and engage, encourage the next generation of leaders, and connect participants to their culture and community.
It also provides opportunities that will empower them to help close the unacceptable economic and health gaps that exist between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
"What we do is unique, innovative and is creating genuine outcomes and we look forward to sharing our journey when we get to New York," Matthews said.
"Equally, it will provide an invaluable opportunity for us to learn from other organisations and that can only improve what we already deliver."
Richmond is already the first sporting club signatory to a National Congress of Australia's First Peoples Accord, which was confirmed last December.
And, the Tigers are the only sporting club in Australia to have its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) recognised as being in 'elevate' status for its demonstrated leadership.

Probably not. The indigenous owners sold manhattan to the settlers IIRC from American History.

The Tigers on Tuesday farewelled the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School’s (MITS) Class of 2019.
Since 2016, a class of Indigenous boys and girls from communities around Australia have come to live in Richmond and attend school each day inside Tigerland.
Richmond’s players presented each of the graduating students with a Tigers jersey while also sharing a barbecue with them.

It has been 10 years since the establishment of the Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI) and to mark the occasion, the KGI has launched a new Indigenous-designed logo.
The vibrant new logo design is built around the Aboriginal symbol for ‘person,’ which is central to KGI programming that is designed to build connection and empower young people.
The symbol also illustrates inclusion and represents all genders and cultures that have been a part of the KGI story over the past 10 years.
Two dotted lines around the design perimeter represent Korin (Grow) and Gamadji (Emerge). These comprise the KGI’s Woiwurrung name, which was gifted to Richmond Football Club by Wurundjeri peoples in 2011.
The new logo will appear in a range of colours to represent Land and Sea Country, paying respect to all of the cultural groups involved in the program.
