Midseason Report Card
SportsNews
5 June 2018
RICHMOND. Grade: A.
Second with nine wins, two losses. What a premiership defence thus far. The Tigers continue to be a masterly benchmark of the pressure-packed style which delivered last year’s flag. They only travel interstate three more times and meet the Suns, Bombers and Bulldogs in a kind run into the finals. Top two beckons.

I think we were 10-1 back in 1995 . Only time I can remember a better win loss record.
Feels so good to be king .

Still don't reckon we've played anywhere near our best yet ..... :shh

I was a little worried about the Essendon game, we had been a little off, and they would have been chock full of confidence, nice to smack 'em and hand out a reality check

I think we limped through that last block of games after the Anzac day eve clash into the short game turnaround v the pies. Perhaps we were able to regroup a little after the saints game and set ourselves up for Dreamtime.
I think Saturday night was the best we've played all year. Just a little cleaner with our disposal, set ups looked rock-solid. We absorbed a meek throwdown from the Dons in the second term and crushed them from there.
Next two weeks very telling. Must get at least 1 win from here going in to the bye.

Stats wise this year, we have the most scope for improvement compared to the other top 8 sides.
The stats files: The three keys to winning games in 2018
Only one team out of 30 this year has lost when it won contested possessions, disposal efficiency and pressure factor in the same game.
The three categories also stand strong in isolation this season: contested possessions (65.6 per cent success rate), disposal efficiency (69 per cent) and pressure factor (62.2 per cent).
Sides win 90.9 per cent of matches when they win contested possessions and disposal efficiency; 81.8 per cent with contested possessions and pressure factor; and 73.5 per cent from disposal efficiency and pressure factor.
Interestingly, second-placed reigning premier Richmond comes in no higher than 12th in any of them.
CLUB CONTESTED DISPOSAL PRESSURE
POSSESSIONS EFFICIENCY FACTOR
(DIFFERENTIAL)
West Coast 4TH 5TH 15TH
Richmond 12TH 14TH 12TH
Melbourne 1ST 9TH 5TH
Sydney 6TH 8TH 13TH
Geelong 5TH 11TH 14TH
North Melb. 3RD 17TH 1ST
Collingwood 2ND 1ST 7TH
Port Adelaide 11TH 13TH 3RD
Three other statistics are more important to team success this year compared to last.
Hit-outs (the ruck revolution), shot-at-goal accuracy (amid 50-year lows in scoring) and handball metres gained (the Tiger effect) have all rocketed in statistical influence on victories.

direct football is the best football. some teams (and we were like that in 2016) feel you need to have a disposal chain of 200+ possessions per goal. I like our long kicking to genuine 50-50 contests and direct use of the ball which kicked off last year
-
Still don't reckon we've played anywhere near our best yet ..... :shh
agree with this - think we've just been going and getting the job done which is pretty much what u want at this time of the year.
Expecting us to click into top gear similarly to last season once Prestia and rioli are back and have a few games under the belt
-
How are we 12th for Pressure Factor? How is that useless stat measured?
-
Pressure factor 12th... :shh
Just keeping the powder dry for September.
This sounds silly, but maybe we were quite happy to lose to West Coast. The second quarter was us testing them out, and we got what we needed from that. We're not showing our hand yet. :shh
-
Half way through the season ?
We have 2 more weeks until that time. :lol

Teams play 22 games in a season, the majority of sides have played 11 - so isn't that half the season :-\

Would be interested to see what we were ranked in these stats last year.

Richmond
Halfway into the year, there have been no symptoms of second-season syndrome for the Tigers, who have carried on their merry way. Undefeated at the MCG since Round 13 last year, Richmond will be looking to capitalise on their dominance at the home of footy to spearhead a back-to-back premiership tilt.

What a lot of rubbish
Hold it at a bigger venue if required so the IS members get to go
The club is getting too big for its own good if this is how things are going to go

Currently the review is held in the GR room. It costs the club nothing to hold it there. Venue hire adds enormous costs so I don't think people would want a significant increase in their membership price just to go to this.

They always did ours separately
For memory Executive would have a meal then go downstairs
IS would get their pesentation before hand = before the dinner
IS now has 500 members there isnt enough room in the GR room
Will say again that one of the other reasons was the member feedback was people didn't value it / want it

Was excellent this year. It's incredible the level of detail that goes into the system of play clubs now use. The days of kick it long to Royce are like prehistoric ones now.

I always enjoyed it, valued it
One of the few in IS it would seem :lol

Jennifer Phelan and Matt Thompson on the AFL website's podcast gave us an "A". We miss out on a A+ because of our interstate losses.
VIDEO: http://www.afl.com.au/video/2018-06-19/tigers-veterans-must-show-theyre-required
Highlight of the season so faf? Geelong win.
Lowlight of the season so far? Port Adelaide loss. No Dusty & Astbury injured.
Looking forward to (aside from another flag)? Getting the premiership band back together: Rioli last week, Houli and Prestia post-bye.
Most improved Tiger? Jayden Short ahead of Caddy.
Those that need a big second half of the season? Over 30 year olds Grigg and Houli need a strong finish to the year to show they are required for 2019.

Mid-season report card
AFL.com.au reporter Jen Phelan evaluates Richmond’s first half of season 2018.
Highlight
“It was pretty hard to pick just one, but we’re going to go with the Round 13 win over Geelong. They won by 18 points, their pressure was back to an elite level after it fell off for a couple of weeks, and Daniel Rioli finally got back to playing. They beat a fellow heavyweight, they went to the top of the ladder for the first time since Round 8. There’s quite a few (highlights) that we could have gone with, but that’s the one I’ve picked out.”
Lowlight
“They’ve lost three games for the season, and this goes to show how much things can change in one week of football. We’ll go with Round 12’s loss to Port Adelaide, which was just one week before this big win over Geelong. It was their third loss on the road for the season. They only went down by 14 points and there was no Dusty (Dustin Martin), David Astbury hurt his ankle . . . there were a few things that went against them. Port got on this massive run in the second quarter and kicked seven goals. So, look, there wasn’t really a reason to panic, but it was probably their lowlight.”
Under the pump
“This is a bit of a different one. I’m going to go with Bachar Houli and Shaun Grigg. They’re not doing anything wrong, but they are both out of contract, they’re 30 years old, and they’re going to have to really show in the second half of the season why they’re required players for 2019 . . .”
Most impressive
“Just like the highlights, it’s pretty hard to pick just one. You can say Josh Caddy, he’s in All Australian contention. Jack Higgins has played nine games in his debut year. Shane Edwards is having a great year. But I’m going to go with Jayden Short. He’s become so important for them out of defence. He leads the Club for metres gained, he’s right up there with his effective disposals, his burst off half-back and through the middle makes him one of the competition’s most improved players, and he’s just become so important for them.”
Grade
“I’m going to give them an A. The plus falls off because they have lost three games and they’ve all been on the road . . . Their interstate record is still a little bit questionable, so we’ll go with an A. Top of the ladder, there’s not much you can dispute there.”
