Title: State of Origin [merged]
Post by: mightytiges on May 23, 2006, 02:22:18 AM
Bringing back State of Origin has been brought up again. Lyon wants a Vic vs the Rest game at the 'G - Link (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,19225469%255E20121,00.html).

Use to love seeing the Flea strut his stuff in the dark years of the late 80s but now I don't want to risk injury to any of our young guys.

Thoughts?

I was never a fan of State of Origin footy. Give me a Tiger premiership, finals appearance or even a win over a rival any day. ;D

I don't even like that International Rules thing they have every year - just don't see the point :-\

Have never really understood the passion they have for State of Origin in the NRL  :help

However having said that I am going the Rugby State of Origin at Telstra in July so maybe I will learn ;D

State of Origin (NRL) is huge.  Everyone is divided, everywhere you go.  Even at my ballroom dancing lesson the other week they were going on about who was going to win.  Everyone in my household is born in a different State - myself = Vic, Hubby = S.A., Mini-me = Qld and my son is NSW.    I'm only interested in the final score - the actual game is quite boring.

I agree with MT on the possibility of injury to key personell, You could have a minimum selection quota of say 4 to 6 players that must come from the SANFL, WAFL, NSW/ACT/QLD AFL and the VFL. This would give fringe players a chance to impress on the big stage in a bit to try and make it to the AFL.
As far as the format goes, it may work the way the Americans do it. Have an Eastern Zone (Vics v Allies) and a Western Zone (WA v SA). Both games played on say a wednesday night and the winners of each zone play each other in the Final a fortnight later on a day to be determined. (maybe the weekend of the mid season break)
That way you only need to set aside two days in the whole season.

Well thats my 2 cents worth anyway. (Not that it's worth that. ;D)

State of Origin is back in the spotlight with Jonathan Brown saying he wants it back. The AFL had sought input from all 16 club captains at the start of the season on the Origin concept and it got a positive response.

Richmond's Kane Johnson said he would be unlikely to play because of the risk of injury. Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd said he would only play during the mid-season break, while Johnson believes the pre-season is more suitable.

LOL CUB. I think that would go for every Tiger  :-\.

Last night's NRL SOO was great but the Storm have lost two players to injury. One out for the season. That's why I'm against it if Richmond players are involved. Why risk your best players.

Yea it's a different culture the roaches and the toads really hate each other, wheras in footy everyone just hates Victoria.

I liked origin and it was great to see all the best players in one team, but if it were to be of detriment to Richmond or our chances of a flag - Umm no way hosie

The thing with the NRL State of Origin, injuries aside, is that the players will then turn around a few days later and play for their respective clubs.  So some of them are playing 3 games in a matter of a week.  And the AFL guys whinge about a couple of hours flying to Perth!

The NRL guys playing 2 games in 3 days is an incredible effort but it's harder in Aussie rules' players to back up as the games go for 120 minutes compared to 80.

State games could pick up IR slack
By Ben Broad
 6:54 PM Wed 29 October, 2008

STATE of Origin football could be right back on the AFL’s radar after the League and the GAA announced the International Rules series will have a break at least once every three years in the future.

While AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou and GAA president Nickey Brennan were talking up next year’s return trip to Ireland, a break in 2010 and again in 2013 will open up some space on the AFL calendar.

And Demetriou admitted representative football could come back into calculations.

“I started to think about that sort of option when we agreed that it would be better to have a two-year cycle (in the International Rules Series),” Demetriou said.

“I mean we’re obviously concerned about player welfare issues and the drain on the number of games all our players are playing.

“The fact that they can look forward to going to Ireland next year, then have a break and then in 2011 resume in Australia, 2012 Ireland then have another break, we think has got some advantages.”

This year the AFL played a Hall of Fame Tribute Match to celebrate its 150th year.

State of Origin football has been in hiatus since 1999 but, Demetriou said given the AFL and the GAA had decided a break every three years might be best for the International Series, it might mean fans could see the return of state versus state footy.

“It does leave open the option of the AFL competition … doing something of its own in 2010".

PLAYERS are leading a charge for the return of State of Origin football, possibly as soon as 2013.

Proposals were discussed last night at a meeting of the AFL Players' Association.

Title: Hardwick cold on pre-season rep footy (Ninemsn)

Dimma as RFC coach is definitely no fan of representative footy ...

AFL coaches cold on pre-season rep footy
Guy Hand and Sam Lienert

Club coaches Damien Hardwick and Nathan Buckley say players need to be careful what they've wished for as an AFL All-Stars game looms a fortnight before the start of next season.

A revamped pre-season schedule was part of several changes to the 2014 fixture ticked off by the AFL Commission this week.

It has been flagged that the NAB Cup grand final could be axed, with a representative match in a yet-to-be-determined format slated to replace it two weeks before round one.

Players overwhelmingly supported the concept of representative football in a recent AFL Players' Association survey, with 86 per cent calling for its return.

But Richmond coach Hardwick doesn't support the concept in pre-season and doubts the star players likely to be picked would be either.

"We've got $10 million worth of players and we're going to put them out (in a pre-season) game," Hardwick said, starting his response to the question of the showpiece match with a deep sigh and an 'Oh, dear'.

"I'll give you a tip. The 86 per cent of the players who want to play - you know who they are? They're the ones who aren't going to play.

"You know who the 14 per cent are that didn't vote for it? They're the team that are going to play.

"At the end of the day, it's before round one of the season. We've got expensive players that are there to play for the Richmond Football Club. For me, that's the No.1 thing."

Collingwood coach Buckley, who could end up risking players of the quality of Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan should the concept go ahead, wonders how much support players will give the idea ahead of a new home-and-away season.

"The players of the AFL at the moment are feeling that their voice is pretty strong and being heard and they've asked for this - the trick comes with how heavily they support it when it's three days away," Buckley said.

"I know personally State of Origin was always well supported by players, but when it came to the crunch they would quite often put their hand up and say not me, not this year."

Push from stars to bring back State of Origin footy thwarted in favour of International Rules

    Adam Baldwin
    Herald Sun
    April 24, 2014 8:30PM

THE AFL has blocked an attempt by the AFLPA to revive State of Origin football next year, despite overwhelming support from the competition’s biggest stars.

The AFLPA believed it presented a strong model and had unanimous support from the players, but the AFL executive instead committed to the revamped International Rules series.

Resistance by AFL clubs to a pre-season representative football concept and scheduling difficulties around the six-week 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup are the main roadblocks.

The AFLPA is left disappointed by the outcome, as it saw representative football as the ideal enter’ to the 2015 season, but remains committed to it’s proposal and is confident of its inclusion in the 2016 pre-season.

“It’s a decision of the current AFL executive, but that’s not to say this position won’t change the following year. We’ll continue to lobby for support from the AFL with a view to 2016,” acting AFLPA chief Prendergast said.

An AFL spokesman last night said the league are focused on the International Rules Series in November, but remain open to other concepts.

“We are open to discuss representative options for 2016 and no determination will be made on that until well into 2015.”

The AFLPA’s representative football proposal featured a traditional State of Origin carnival played over three years or a City vs. Country showcase game.

Under the proposal, Victoria and South Australia would play at Etihad Stadium or Adelaide Oval in the first year, Western Australia and The Allies at Patersons Stadium in the second year, with the winners to play off in a final in the third year.

Alternatively, the City vs. Country concept would be played every second or third year and while it doesn’t evoke the same emotion as State of Origin, players are enthused by the opportunity to reunite with junior teammates.

In a survey of 40 players likely to be selected, the AFLPA found 54 per cent prefer State of Origin, 38 per cent in favour of City v Country and the remainder supportive of either concept.

Sixty-eight per cent of players want representative football to be staged every year.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury is one of these players and while he acknowledges the issues at club level, he feels the concept is worth fighting for.

“I’ve been a big supporter of this. While I understand it’s not without its challenges, and that we need to work through these issues, I don’t think this should stop it from going ahead. I’m confident we’ll get there eventually and I’m it’ll be exciting for everyone involved once we do,” Pendlebury said.

In a bid to alleviate the burden on the clubs, the number of players from each would be capped at four, but players not released by their clubs may be ineligible for the following weekend’s games.

The proposal also includes plans to broadcast the team selection process and provide fans with the opportunity to select interchange players by voting online.

SEN has picked 4 Tigers in their sides: Dusty, Houli and Lynch for Victoria and Jack for the "Dream Team".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the AFL reportedly considering a State of Origin game in late February to help raise money for bushfire relief, the question turns to what the teams would look like

The Herald Sun are suggesting it will only be one match and set at Marvel Stadium, which likely means it will be Victoria versus the Dream Team, rather than the traditional matchups.

Would love to see it personally. Really enjoyed the 2008 game when Foley tore it up.

This is something the NRL does much better than the AFL (and trades too).

Me too. Foley did us proud that night.

I tend to disagree with the NRL do it better crap. They have little to no club-fan connection, so the state of origin fills in as the pinnacle for that sport. Plus there's only 2 states in the whole country that really give a crap. AFL actually stands as the premier winter code in 4 States, and is widely played and followed in all the other states and territories.

In any case, I think its a great idea. Will definitely tune in, but I'm just worried about Dusty.
Title: AFL confirm State of Origin match - Feb 28 @ Marvel Stadium (afl site)
Post by: one-eyed on January 09, 2020, 02:16:03 PM
Well it's official.

Dimma will be Victoria's coach.

Maximum 3 players per club can be picked to play.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Victoria will play an All Stars line-up on Friday February 28, with money raised to boost a Community Relief Fund set-up by the AFL to help rebuild football facilities ripped apart by the national crisis.

Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick will lead the Victorians and Sydney counterpart John Longmire will coach the All Stars in the match to be staged at Marvel Stadium.

The AFL ($1.35m) – in association with the clubs ($900,000) and AFL Players Association ($250,000) – have committed a $2.5million donation.

A total of $1m will provide immediate emergency assistance through the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fund. An additional $1.5m will kickstart the Community Relief Fund for grassroots facilities.

The match – to be played during the second weekend of the pre-season Marsh Community Series – will see players selected in a process still to be determined.

There will be a maximum of three players per AFL club eligible to take part in the match to ensure minimal disruption to club's pre-season plans just 20 days before round one.

Dustin Martin (Victoria)
Tom Lynch (Victoria)
Jack Riewoldt (All Stars)

Dustin Martin an absolute lock for Victoria's midfield and as a resting forward. Tom Lynch would most likely start at full-forward for the Big V. Dylan Grimes narrowly missed out with Jack Riewoldt’s excitement factor necessary inside forward 50 for the All Stars.

Mate v mate: How the Vic v All Stars teams will be picked

By Mitch Cleary

16 Jan 2020

CLUBS will hold the selection power for next month's State of Origin bushfire relief match after each receiving a shortlist of names from the AFL on Wednesday.

Eight players – four for Victoria and four the All Stars – were put forward by the AFL that clubs will be required to confirm as fit to play for the Victoria v All Stars match at Marvel Stadium on Friday, February 28.

Victorian coach Damien Hardwick and All Stars counterpart John Longmire will then select their squads of 27 on Tuesday, February 18.

A maximum of three players per AFL club will be eligible to feature across the two playing lists.

The final teams will be announced on AFL.com.au on Wednesday, February 26.

Each team will have a starting 18, six interchange players and three emergencies.

A player's best and fairest finish and the 2019 Virgin Australia AFL All-Australian squad were heavily favoured in the process of selecting eight names from each club on Wednesday.

Could we get more State of Origin matches in the future?

By Mitch Cleary
afl.com.au
17 January 2020

NEXT month's State of Origin Bushfire Relief Match could be the catalyst for permanent representative football, according to Richmond coach Damien Hardwick.

Speaking for the first time after being announced as the Victorian coach for the clash at Marvel Stadium on February 28, Hardwick conceded he had changed his opinion on State of Origin.

"If you had have asked me this time last year, I'd probably say no. (But) sometimes things can have a really deep impact, and this might be the start of something," Hardwick said.

"The amount of players we've seen put up their hand for a significant cause is really important.

"It might not be every year, it might be every four years, I'm not exactly sure. It's the players' hands, they're the ones who've got to get out there and play."

Hardwick will coach against an All Stars line-up led by Sydney coach John Longmire, with the pair restricted to a maximum of three players per AFL club across the two playing lists.

The 2019 premiership coach said he had one player first on his list at the selection table.

"Oh, Dustin (Martin)," Hardwick said.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting the other players, you do see them around, but you don't have the day-to-day connection with those guys.

"I know Paddy Dangerfield, but it'd be good to know him a little bit better, Scotty Pendlebury and those types."

Hardwick said dual premiership forward Jack Riewoldt had put his hand up to play for the All Stars – but may have a fight on his hands to become one of three Tigers eligible.

He's got to make the side, Jack. He's already declared himself the captain of the opposition side.

    - Damien Hardwick

"It'll be interesting, some of the players who will be available, Jack, Shane Edwards, to name a few, are going to be important for them as well."

Tickets for the State of Origin match will go on sale from Tuesday January 21 at 12pm AEDT with entry also including the NAB AFL Women's curtain raiser between Collingwood and Melbourne.

Junior prices start from $10 and adults from $20 and will be available from Ticketmaster.

Match-day experiences are also available for auction via here including watching from the coaches' boxes, sitting on the interchange bench and becoming the team's drink steward.

All funds raised will go directly to the Community Relief Fund set-up by the AFL to assist with local football clubs repairing facilities torn about by the national bushfire crisis.

Four All Stars, four Vics: Your club's State of Origin contenders

Eight players – four for Victoria and four for the All Stars – were put forward by the AFL, with clubs now in the process of selecting their lists for the Victoria v All Stars match at Marvel Stadium on Friday, February 28.

A maximum of three players per AFL club will be eligible to feature across the two playing lists.

AFL.com.au has confirmed that the player's birthplace will determine which team they are eligible to play for, not the state they were drafted from.

The final teams will be announced on AFL.com.au on Wednesday, February 26.

Here, our writers name their eight players from each club who are eligible for both squads.

RICHMOND

Victoria: Dylan Grimes, Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia
All Stars: Shane Edwards, Marlion Pickett, Jack Riewoldt, Sydney Stack

Skipper Trent Cotchin may just miss out on Victorian selection under coach Damien Hardwick, as Jack Dyer medallist Dion Prestia is coming off stronger form. The Tigers could have bookends in the Big V, with Tom Lynch and newly minted Virgin Australia AFL All Australian Dylan Grimes looking set for a gig (Bachar Houli's soft tissue concerns over summer rules him out), and Dustin Martin is born for the big stage. Just try to stop proud Tasmanian Jack Riewoldt from having a run, while clever South Australian Shane Edwards adds some experience. Rounding out the possible Tiger All Stars are dynamic West Australian pair Sydney Stack and Marlion Pickett, edging out Dan Rioli and Shai Bolton (Toby Nankervis is still recovering from groin surgery). What better way to follow up a Grand Final debut than with a State of Origin match?

Which premiership Tigers will feature in Origin?

Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
February 1, 2020

Richmond is determined to back the Bushfire Relief game by declaring its stars available with as many as six Tigers potentially suiting up against each other.

As the Tigers train on the Gold Coast, Tom Lynch has enjoyed a flawless pre-season that will be a mouthwatering entree to his second season at the Tigers.

He barely trained with the main group before a 63-goal season that included five goals in the preliminary final.

He would be one of the first picked by the Victorian side, with the league handing clubs an eight-player wish list to determine availability for both sides, coaches by Damien Hardwick and John Longmire.

The Victorian and All Star teams can have three players from each team take the field, but clubs will hope the league spread the load.

The Victorian team could have Dustin Martin, Tom Lynch or 2019 All Australians Dylan Grimes and Bachar Houli suiting up, while Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards would lead the queue of non-Victorians.

The Tigers haven’t yet made Martin officially available but it is expected he would play unless he was injured in the next month.

Football boss Neil Balme said yesterday clubs were aware of the need to make the concept work despite any reservations about injuries.

“It’s just a matter of availability and how well they are going. We are very supportive of the concept of it, given we are letting our coach be one of the coaches,” he said.

“At first you might not be sure because your first response is, “What if someone gets injured?”.

“But you can do that climbing over the back fence and we also think the bigger picture of giving State of Origin a shot is a good thing.”

Jack Riewoldt keen for AFL bushfire game

Jack Riewoldt is keen to take part in the AFL's bushfire charity match, which should thrill Richmond fans because it means the veteran spearhead is fit and firing after a tough year on the injury front.

The dual premiership star missed 12 games last year with wrist and knee injuries, but the 30-year-old didn't need post-season surgery and is delighted with how his preparation for the 2020 season has progressed.

Riewoldt told reporters on Friday that superstar teammate Dustin Martin has also put his hand up to play for the Victorian side, coached by Damien Hardwick.

Why Prestia has been nagging Hardwick

Chris Cavanagh
Herald Sun
15 Feb 2020

Every time Dion Prestia has bumped into Damien Hardwick during the past month, he’s asked the same question.

“C’mon, am I going to get picked?”

He’s not talking Round 1, rather the AFL’s State of Origin for Bushfire Relief match on February 28.

As the premier’s reigning best-and-fairest, the Richmond midfielder reckons he should be a shoo-in to be one of the three Tigers required for the Victorian team.

But Hardwick, the Victorian coach, has refused to give him any guarantees.

“I thought I was in with a chance with Dimma being coach and all,” Prestia said.

“Every time I walk past him I always say, ‘C’mon, am I going to get picked?’ You can only have three players from each team and he’s got a few good ones to pick from (at Richmond) that might get picked ahead of me.

“I think I should get first dibs, really. Dustin (Martin) will probably get picked before me. Maybe Jack (Riewoldt) can have the week off and play in Wangaratta (for a pre-season match), though.

“But if I get asked to I will absolutely want to jump at that opportunity.”

High five: AFL eyes star Giants for bushfire relief game

Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
February 17, 2020

Grand Finalists Richmond and GWS have thrown open their full complement of stars for the Bushfire relief game as the league ponders whether it can return the concept to an annual event.

Clubs will be told on Tuesday which players will be chosen but like Richmond, the Giants are happy for more than three players to take part.

Initially clubs were told only three per club would be selected with squads of 27 per side for the Victoria v All Stars clash on February 28.

But the league has accepted the overtures from star-studded sides happy to provide more players if needed given clubs will already be playing Marsh Community Series games at the same time.

At least one player from each team will play in the concept but some clubs will have up to five.

GWS football boss Jason McCartney said the Giants were fully behind the Bushfire relief game given its timing on the football calendar.

“There were loose guidelines around three players being available but with Damien Hardwick coaching he is happy to have more players playing at Richmond. We are really comfortable with our guys playing even if it ends up at four or five,” he said yesterday.

“You want the guys ideally prepared to play for the season and they need a couple of hit-outs. If they don’t play in that game it’s our first Marsh Community Series game against Sydney on Saturday.

“To be honest the guys are all super keen to play because of the bushfire relief charity but also because it’s State-of-Origin.”

I’m in: Dusty to don Big V for bushfire relief match

Jay Clark
Herald Sun
February 17, 2020

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin will take centre stage in next Friday night’s State of Origin clash after confirming he will play in the bushfire fundraiser.

The Herald Sun can reveal the Brownlow Medalist and dual premiership hero was the first player picked to lead Victoria into battle against the All-Stars in a near sold-out clash at Marvel Stadium on February 28.

He also unveiled the traditional navy blue and white ‘Big V’ jumper to be worn in the match.

Martin’s inclusion is a huge boost for the first State of Origin-style game in 12 years, with the biggest names in football including Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury and Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield (Victoria) and Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe and Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps (All-Stars) tipped to lock horns under the roof.

Martin, arguably the game’s No. 1 player after winning a second Norm Smith medal win in last year’s Grand Final, said he would be honoured to pull on the ‘Big V’ to help raise vital funds for rural communities.

“I can’t imagine how hard it must be for the families and communities that have lost everything in the bushfires,” Martin told the Herald Sun.

“I’m really grateful to be able to play a small part along with the rest of the guys in helping rebuild these people’s lives and communities.”

Victoria coach Damien Hardwick and All-Stars boss John Longmire will release their squads at noon on Tuesday.

The duo face major headaches finalising their star-studded teams but the Herald Sun can confirm there has been a late selection criteria change to ensure the two sides are as strong as possible.

The two coaches will now be able to pick as many players as they like from each club after the AFL decided to scrap the previous three-player-per club limit.

It means there could be as many as five players from some of the top sides such as Richmond, Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney.

Martin is certain to be one of the headline acts on the night, with Tigers’ teammate Jack Riewoldt tipping the 28-year-old powerhouse to kick a big bag of goals in a forward role under lights.

All money raised will help communities devastated by the bushfire crisis last month.

The league and its 18 clubs have already pledged $2.5 million.

Martin called on footy fans to pack out Marvel Stadium next Friday night.

More than 40,000 tickets have already been sold.

“I hope we can get as many people along as possible and raise a lot of much-needed funds,” Martin said.

AFL football operations manager Steve Hocking said the selection criteria change would allow the “best of the best” to play next Friday night.

“We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the playing group and the support from all the clubs,” Hocking said.

“Once we sat down with the coaches to discuss the teams it was clear we had a responsibility to have the best players in the competition play and make the State of Origin match the competitive showcase for the fans.

“It is such an important event, our industry coming together, to raise valuable funds for those who have been affected by the bushfires, and recognise the sacrifice of the firefighters, emergency services and thousands of volunteers around the country.”

“The Friday night double header at Marvel will be a great representation of both our women’s and men’s competitions.”

Collingwood and Melbourne’s AFLW teams will clash first from 5.40pm.

The two State of Origin squads will train together for the first time next Thursday.

Only a small handful of stars have been declared unavailable for State of Origin selection due to injury.

They include Sydney swans’ champion Lance Franklin (knee), Geelong tough-nut Joel Selwood (hamstring), Max Gawn (knee) and Hawthorn’s Jaeger O’Meara (managed).

Meanwhile, Hardwick will be able to call Hawthorn premiership mastermind Alastair Clarkson as his right-hand man in Victoria’s coaching box next Friday night.

Clarkson has signed up as one of four assistant coaches to support Hardwick for the State of Origin stoush at Marvel Stadium.

The pair have remained close friends since Clarkson helped mentor Hardwick during their time at Hawthorn together from 2005 — 2009.

Robert Harvey (Collingwood), Adam Kingsley (Richmond) and Dean Solomon (Gold Coast) are Victoria’s other assistant coaches.

All-Stars’ coach John Longmire has enlisted Stuart Dew (Gold Coast), Michael Voss (Port Adelaide), Mark McVeigh (GWS), Joel Corey (Western Bulldogs) and Dean Cox (Sydney) as his lieutenants.

The game will be broadcast live on FoxFooty. Adult tickets from $20 at Ticketmaster.

The Richmond star Hardwick has avoided since Bushfire squad announcement

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
18 Feb 2020

Richmond has six players taking part in the Bushfire Relief game, but Victorian coach Damien Hardwick felt bad about leaving a few more out.

One in particular – midfielder Dion Prestia – is someone the Tigers coach has attempted to avoid since the naming of the team on Tuesday.

Prestia has been bugging Hardwick since he was named as coach, telling the Herald Sun last week that he asked him about selection at every possible opportunity.

“I avoided Dion like you wouldn’t believe this week,” Hardwick told Sportsday.

“I gave him the old you’re in my side, but not the other blokes'.

“It’s so hard. It was amazing when you sit there and try to piece together a side, the quality of players we’ve got in this league is staggering.

“The players that were left out I felt incredibly embarrassed about, but trying to pick one player to replace another, it was quite easy to do, but I think the players we picked really deserved it.”

Hardwick will get the opportunity to coach the likes of Scott Pendlebury, Patrick Dangerfield, Robbie Gray, Marcus Bontempelli, Jeremy Cameron and other superstars.

He is excited to see how these players ply their trade behind closed doors and is hoping to learn from their expertise.

“I don’t get to see these players behind closed doors either so it is going to be really exciting for us in the coaching staff to see how players do prepare and what they bring to the table and what they’re like from a voice factor also,” he said.

Star Tiger calls for more State-of-Origin games

Glenn McFarlane
Herald Sun
19 Feb 2020

Dual Richmond premiership defender Bachar Houli will live out a childhood dream by representing Victoria in Friday week’s Bushfire Relief fundraiser and wants to ensure AFL stars of the future get the same chance in the years to come.

Houli said he dearly wanted to see a State-of-Origin clash become a semi-regular event, saying the AFL should take note of how the best players in the competition have rallied behind such a worthy cause.

He was one of six Tigers named in the two 27-men squads, with Houli, Dustin Martin, Tom Lynch and Trent Cotchin to don the big V while Shane Edwards and Jack Riewoldt will play for the All-Stars.

“Honestly, in my whole career, I never thought I would get this opportunity,” Houli said. “I am extremely humbled by it. At the age of 31, to be able to represent the ‘Big V’ is something that is very special and something I will honour for the rest of my life.”

“It (state games) is something that was missing for a few years and there are obviously reasons for that.

“But having this (game) is the beginning of something new.

“It’s a pity it is towards the end of my career … (but) hopefully from this, it is going to create something special moving forward.”

Edwards said he had no doubt that although there is only pride on the line, the competitive juices would ensure a high standard given the array of stars as well as a tough and tight contest.

He cited the recent NBA All-Stars game where it got very serious late in the contest when the game was in the balance.

“You can’t go in half-hearted, you pretty much have to go in as hard as you can,” Edwards said.

“As the game goes on, and quarters tick over, you would rather be on the winning side than the losing one.”

A recent trip to the Lakes Entrance region in Gippsland to speak with those affected by the bushfires deeply affected Houli.

“It was mind blowing,” Houli said.

“When we first turned up, the locals were a bit hesitant but once they felt comfortable, they opened up and shared a few personal stories.

“One that springs to mind was the young kids locked in the community hall and hearing that roaring fire.

“You can see the impact it had on the community. All we can do is to keep supporting them and showing them there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Shane Edwards has put his hand up to be the “run-with” player on teammate Bachar Houli in the bushfire relief game, but has no interest in shadowing Dustin Martin.

Edwards joked when asked if he could play on Martin: “Run with Dusty … I could probably run with him but when the ball gets there I might be useless.”

“I might be in the team just to tag Bachar.

“We might start the game on each other and we might end the game on each other.”

The versatile Tiger said he would be “running around with stars in my eyes” playing for the All-Stars against Victoria.

Asked which All-Stars teammate he was most looking forward to playing with, he said: “Where do you start? (Nat) Fyfe, (Patrick) Cripps, Elliot Yeo and seeing what Michael Walters does up close will be great. I’ve seen it from the other side, and it can be pretty devastating.”

“Then, there’s Brodie Grundy. I don’t know, I will be running around with stars in my eyes.”

He said the All-Stars might have to adopt the “Big A’ moniker to compete with the “Big V” as the two sides prepare to do battle on Friday week.

I love Cotch and despite being a great captain he's clearly not in the best 50 AFL players for me anymore on talent alone.

Glad he got the captain's gig though. Pendlebury will just have to take a back seat :)

Cotch had 10 disposals in the first qtr. Got the Vics back in the game.

Dusty with 2 goals already.

Lynch and the other big key forwards all quiet. It's a half-back counterattack running game without the usual modern defensive structures. It's too fast for the big blokes.

Sheds as silky skilled as ever  :clapping.

Just not Big Tommy's night. At least he can blow the cobwebs away in this game before the real stuff.

Jack is all footy smarts :bow.

I haven't noticed Cotch on the ground that much since 1/4 time. Perhaps Dimma is being careful with Cotch's minutes given his hammy probs last year.

Dimma and Cotch hold up the cup.

Same old same old ;D.

Seriously though Cotch showed why he's the best captain in the AFL in that last quarter. It stopped being an all-out offensive exhibition game for him and he turned up the chasing and tackling pressure and the rest of the Vic side followed. Vics kicked 9.5 to 0.2 in the last to win 24.10-154 to 15.18-108.

THE BIG V reigns supreme once more.

On the canvas midway through the third quarter, Victoria produced a spirited comeback to overturn a 30-point deficit and storm home against a talented All-Stars outfit in the State of Origin for Bushfire Relief match in front of a packed crowd at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

The Victorian side, led by Josh Kelly and Dustin Martin's class in the forward line and Scott Pendlebury and Trent Cotchin's leadership in midfield, kicked 11 unanswered goals in a barnstorming finish that inspired an impressive and determined 46-point victory.

Martin – already a Brownlow Medal winner, a two-time premiership player and a dual Norm Smith medallist – added a State of Origin best on ground medal to his list of accomplishments following a stellar game that yielded 23 disposals and two goals.

He was aided by Tom Papley (11 disposals, five goals), Tom Greene (23 disposals, four goals) and Kelly (22 disposals, four goals) – who were a constant menace forward of centre.

For the All-Stars, Stephen Coniglio (24 disposals, two goals) was busy across the ground, while livewire forward Charlie Cameron (17 disposals, three goals) was also impressive.

Cotchin's tackling was supreme. In fact I was quite surprised at how well he played for his first hitout this year. Was expecting a slower start.

Jack solid.

Dusty awesome and was literally giving goals away, could have had 4-5 no trouble.

Houli, Edwards and Lynch quiet but wgaf

I can't find a pic with both Dimma and Cotch together holding the cup. They didn't raise it sky high like the premiership cup.

I wouldn't say clear but he deserved it. Dusty had the equal most disposals (23), kicked 2 goals himself in the first half and as Andyy said Dusty gave off about 4-5 goals.

The crowd loved Dusty. You could hear the crowd noise rise every time the ball went near him. He is the AFL's No.1 player and face of the game. No one else comes near him. One time Lynch even got booed when he went for the same mark as Dusty lol.

The AFL released to the public how the medal was awarded on the back of a five-member judging panel where each voting member handed out voted on a 3, 2, 1 basis.

Martin tallied 10 votes from the judging panel, finishing ahead of Josh Kelly (six votes) and Scott Pendlebury (five votes). Stephen Coniglio (three votes) was the only other player to receive votes from more than one judge.

Martin received two votes from Nick Riewoldt, one vote from Luke Hodge, three votes from Ray Gallagher (president of the Omeo District Football Netball League), one vote from Stephen Griffin (CEO SES), and three votes from the official fan’s poll.
