Passionate Hardwick 'couldn't care less' about external pressures

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has declared he "couldn't care less what people outside our club think" and he won't be driven by proving outsiders wrong in 2016.

Following the Tigers' third straight elimination final defeat, Hardwick conceded the club would come under pressure to notch a breakthrough finals win next season.

In a passionate best and fairest speech on Tuesday night, he said the Tigers should be inspired by retiring former captain Chris Newman in their pursuit of success, telling his players they must grab their opportunity, because "one day it won’t be there".

"We won’t be driven by proving outsiders wrong … to be totally honest I couldn’t care less what people outside our club think," Hardwick said at the Jack Dyer Medal count.

"The rest of the football world wants to point the finger at us and tell us we aren’t up to it.

"I ask you, would Chris Newman curl up in a corner and feel sorry for himself and say it’s all too hard? Not on your life. And there is no way this club will.

"As our song says, we will fight and fight and win. I’m up for the fight, the players are up for the fight … as is the whole club."

Hardwick said he drew inspiration from Australian golfer Jason Day, who "finished top 10 in a major championship nine times before he won a major".

"These are lessons in persistence and putting yourself in a position to contend," he said.

"We must continue to do exactly that as a club. That in itself takes an enormous amount of work."

"Hard work and commitment are the only answers."

Hardwick, who came under pressure following the Tigers' 2-4 start to the season, thanked president Peggy O’Neal, the club's board and CEO Brendon Gale for their support in 2015.

Out of contract at the end of next season, he told the players "the past matters zero" and they needed to take every opportunity to make themselves better players.

"You must grab the opportunity because as Chris Newman will tell you, one day it won’t be there," he said.

It is not just outsiders who he needs to prove wrong. There are plenty of our own who aren't delusional or easily won over by rhetoric.
Anyway wasn't the club under pressure to win a final this year, that elephant has been swept under the carpet, though everyone can see the bulge.

Hardwick holding up Newman and mentioning success in the same breath sort of sums the stupidity up.

The rest of the footy world is pointing the finger, sorry dimma but you wont find yes men or deluded fools among them when it comes to the rfc is that the problem. Truth hurts sometimes.

Chris Newman didnt curl up in a corner i agree, but he stupidly hung on and on IMO he  knew deep down he should have walked well before he did.

Lol The RFC  and Jason Day compared. Jason Day was a genuine contender  and still is, It is this sort of delusion that drives me spare, we have never been a contender at any time under Hardwick and it is of great concern  he actually thinks  we are.

Yep there are lessons in persistence, there is also persistence that is detrmental. You can persevere for too long you can back in what you do until the cows come home and never succeed. If you cant work out what works and what doesnt then persistence becomes your enemy. What is that old saying, doing the same thing over and over again is the epitomy of madness.

Hard work and commitment are important but they wont win you finals if you dont have the players or dont play the right brand of footy. Hard work and commitment are non negotiables for all Afl players not just ours.

So the players have to become better. Which players is this aimed at?  because  with many of the players there is little room for improvement.

I hate reading spin and nonsense, One lesson clearly has not been learn't and that is to say nothing even when they speak.

If the bloke had any balls he would categorically say if we dont win a final next year he will resign as clearly he would have taken the list as far as he can. That has probably already happened.

Hardwick uses Newman as a shining example

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has urged the Club’s playing group to follow the lead of esteemed stalwart Chris Newman, as they strive to help the Tigers take that important next step in their football journey.

Newman bowed out of league football following a distinguished 268-game playing career, when the Tigers lost to North Melbourne by 17 points in the 2015 elimination final.

Hardwick paid a glowing tribute to him at tonight’s Jack Dyer Medal function, highlighting the key attributes that were the cornerstone of Newman’s time at Tigerland, which he hopes will help drive the playing group in 2016.

“As captain, he led this club through some of its darkest days.  And, he did so with pride and courage,” Hardwick said.

“This is a man who genuinely loves his club and the jumper . . .

“When I look back on his career, a couple of things stand out.

“Firstly, he always put the Club first, and every decision he made was about what he could do to make it better.

“Secondly, he never ever gave up the fight to play in September, no matter how distant that dream might have seemed at different times.

“They are two lessons I think we should all take away from the career of Chris Newman.

“It is the second one that is particularly relevant when we reflect on season 2015.

“We lost an elimination final a few weeks back.  It was the third we have lost in-a-row.

“The rest of the football world wants to point the finger at us and tell us we aren’t up to it.

“I ask you, would Chris Newman curl up in a corner and feel sorry for himself and say it’s all too hard?

“Not on your life!

“And, there is no way this Club will.

“As our song says, we’ll fight and fight and win.

“I’m up for the fight, the players are up for the fight, as is the whole club.

“Our magnificent fans expect nothing less.

“So, we will roll the sleeves up and get stuck into the hard work in a few weeks’ time . . .

“It’s about making our fans proud of their football club and honouring the legacy of players like Chris Newman, who have given their heart and soul to this club.”

Hardwick acknowledged that the Tigers had shown significant improvement over the past three years, and their playing list was still developing.  But he finished his speech with a blunt message as to what was required from the players in order for the team to achieve sustained success.

“Hard work and commitment are the only answers,” he said.

“The past matters zero. What matters is what lies ahead, and taking every opportunity to make yourself better players.

“You must grab the opportunity because, as Chris Newman will tell you, one day it won’t be there.”

If these are the two examples of key points Dimma wanted to be on the public record at such an important event, he has got nothing left in the tank as far as motivation and perspective goes.

Hmmm. Chrissy Newman.

Spoken about in glowing terms by the coach in his end of year speech.

Personally mentioned and thanked by duel All Australian and JD medalist Alex Rance.

Credited with creating a new tradition of pride in the jumper that players call their armour.

One of the few that actually stood up in the final.

Wins the award for biggest whipping boy on OER in season 2015

Go figure.

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has declared he "couldn't care less what people outside our club think" and he won't be driven by proving outsiders wrong in 2016.

HAHAHAHA

Following the Tigers' third straight elimination final defeat, Hardwick conceded the club would come under pressure to notch a breakthrough finals win next season.

Conceeded? HAHAHAHAHAHA

In a passionate best and fairest speech on Tuesday night, he said the Tigers should be inspired by retiring former captain Chris Newman in their pursuit of success, telling his players they must grab their opportunity, because "one day it won’t be there".

Wow.He's like Vince Lombardi.

Can someone please get me a bucket so I can spew up all that narcissism

Hardwick said he drew inspiration from Australian golfer Jason Day, who "finished top 10 in a major championship nine times before he won a major".
"These are lessons in persistence and putting yourself in a position to contend," he said.
"We must continue to do exactly that as a club. That in itself takes an enormous amount of work."
"Hard work and commitment are the only answers."

Well, I feel confident now.

Out of contract at the end of next season, he told the players "the past matters zero" and they needed to take every opportunity to make themselves better players.
"You must grab the opportunity because as Chris Newman will tell you, one day it won’t be there," he said.

LMATFO @ Newman the Martyr.
Hardwick is a loser.

In reality it just shows how poor we have been in the past. Our young players have no real hero's within the team to admire and strive to be like. One thing Newy did do was play for the jumper, which he deserves credit for, and I think that was what Dimma was trying to promote.

Seriously, playing for the jumper accounts to a fat zero when you're less than average at a professional level.
