How Eddie McGuire and Amazon could shake up the AFL on TV

By Sam McClure
The Age
February 25, 2020

The AFL's television landscape is set for a shake-up after global streaming giant Amazon agreed to a $10 million deal with Collingwood president Eddie McGuire’s media company.

Football industry sources have confirmed to The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald that Amazon is purchasing the rights for a series of football club documentaries, to be produced by Jam TV – the television arm of McGuire Media – and shown on Amazon Prime in Australia.

Collingwood and Sydney are among the clubs approached to feature in the series, but the project hit an early snag when the football department of McGuire's own club, the Magpies, indicated they were not keen on taking part.

Swans superstar Lance Franklin is high on Amazon's wish list for a series that would include in-depth interviews across the course of a season with key players and officials at selected clubs.

The deal, which has been in the pipeline for months, initially angered subscription rights-holder Foxtel, who demanded a meeting with AFL executives. Fox Footy, which employs McGuire as a host and commentator and paid $1.3 billion over six years for a share of the broadcast rights, felt it had been sidelined by the deal.

The emergence of Amazon – ranked the second biggest company in the world by market capitalisation – comes after AFL boss Gillon McLachlan last year led a team of executives to meet tech giants in the US. The league's current broadcast deal with Channel Seven, Foxtel and Telstra, worth $2.508 billion, expires in 2022.

Amazon’s documentaries will see six people from each club interviewed over the course of a entire season.

The six club figures will be the senior coach, president, chief executive, a senior player, a player in the middle of his career and a junior player.

Sydney are one of several clubs who have shown interest, including Richmond, Carlton, West Coast, Gold Coast and GWS.

Amazon would like six clubs to partake in the project.

The AFL confirmed on Monday that a number of documentary-style mini-series are in the works.

“We’re still in discussion with Amazon,” an AFL spokesman said.

Amazon’s first foray into Australian rules can only be a positive for the AFL, with broadcast negotiations around the corner.

Amazon series on AFL stars to air in 2021

The Age
17 June 2020

Amazon's behind the scenes docu-series focusing on individuals from six AFL clubs will be shown exclusively on Prime Video in 2021, with the AFL confirming the agreement days after signing a revised broadcast deal with Seven, Foxtel and Telstra.

Carlton's Eddie Betts, West Coast's Nic Naitanui, the Giants' Stephen Coniglio and Adelaide's Rory Sloane are the four players who will feature in the series, as will Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew and Richmond's American-born president Peggy O'Neal.

The Amazon crews have been subjected to the same COVID-19 restrictions and testing as players and football department officials while continuing to gather material throughout the shutdown period between March 22 and June 11.

They have continued filming and will be hoping at least one of the six clubs involved make the grand final with the Giants, West Coast and Richmond all considered potential premiers.

AMAZON Prime Video has revealed the new AFL docu-series, Making Their Mark, will launch globally on March 12, 2021, and has unveiled the series teaser art in celebration of the upcoming release.

Making Their Mark follows players and executives from six teams - Nic Naitanui (West Coast ruckman), Stuart Dew (Gold Coast coach), Stephen Coniglio (Greater Western Sydney captain), Eddie Betts (Carlton forward), Rory Sloane, (Adelaide captain), and the senior leadership of the Richmond Football Club (Peggy O'Neal, Brendon Gale and Damien Hardwick) – as they pursue the ultimate goal of a Toyota AFL Grand Final victory, in a season like no other.

Across seven hour-long episodes, Making Their Mark charts each team's extraordinary journey through the 2020 AFL season, providing unparalleled insight into the daily challenges and struggles faced both on and off the field. These included the impact of the COVID-19 crisis which saw play suspended for 12 weeks resulting in a condensed season, the relocation of Victorian teams to other states, games played to empty stadiums, and the Grand Final being held at night and outside of Melbourne for the first time in AFL history.

Through the highs and lows, viewers can gain unrivalled and unparalleled access into the clubs' locker rooms, boardrooms, training sessions, medical assessments, players' homes and what it takes to survive the season to make their mark and in Richmond's case, to take home the coveted Toyota AFL Premiership Cup.

"Making Their Mark is a true celebratory snapshot of the 2020 AFL season. We were not only able to showcase the best of the best players at the top of their game, also the teams' resilience on their road to victory. We could never have predicted when filming began the severe impact that COVID-19 would have on Australia, the AFL or our production," said Gil Marsden, director of Making Their Mark.

"A crisis like this year tested the strength and determination of every team in the League, whilst the teams continue to be delivering the best AFL for fans across the year. It is an incredible honour to be trusted by our clubs to witness firsthand their sacrifices and challenges this season, which culminates on screen with Richmond's epic Grand Final win."

Hopefully the doco shows how many times we were written off by the likes of Cornes and the other haters before proving them wrong :putz.

'They're human beings': Why Tigers never doubted Amazon Prime doco call

Brendon Gale opens up on the club's decision to grant full access to documentary crews in the Making Their Mark doco

By Oliver Caffrey
AAP
10 March 2021

RICHMOND chief Brendon Gale never doubted the club's decision to grant documentary crews full access to the Tigers, even as the reigning premiers experienced a turbulent off-field period.

The Tigers, with a particular focus on president Peggy O'Neal, coach Damien Hardwick and Gale, are among six clubs featured in Amazon Prime Video series, Making Their Mark.

The seven-part documentary ends with Richmond winning their third premiership in four years, but it was far from smooth sailing for the Tigers in 2020.

Viewers of the series, which will be released worldwide on Amazon this Friday, will get a behind-the-scenes look at how the Tigers dealt with several off-field scandals which threatened to derail their flag defence.

In episode six, O'Neal and Gale are shown trying to comprehend how Tigers young guns Sydney Stack and Callum Coleman-Jones broke the AFL's COVID-19 protocols during a night out at a Gold Coast strip club (WATCH IN THE PLAYER BELOW).

The club's board also have to address locker room groping incidents, which came to light after Hardwick fielded questions from renowned political journalist Hugh Riminton during a press conference.

Despite all the challenges the Tigers faced last year, Gale never felt it was the wrong call to allow such unprecedented access.

"When people get a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes it contextualises some of the things that are going on," Gale said at Amazon Prime's documentary launch.

"There were some things that happened during the year that was being presented externally was like 'they're out of control and egomaniacs'.

"But they're human beings and they're young men and they're flawed, like we all are. You've just got to deal with it."

Some clubs were hesitant to be part of the ambitious project, fearing what could become public and how it would be portrayed with cameras constantly following their players and staff around.

But Gale believes the AFL industry should be more open to future documentaries, not less.

"As administrators we want to give our members and fans a sense of involvement," he said.

"We can't have 100,000 members marching into the offices of the Richmond Football Club and seeing how things work.

"But this gives them a really strong sense of involvement and what goes on. People want to see more of this.

"I love Sunderland Til I Die and I love The Test so this takes our game to an international audience."

Too often, the fly on the wall turns out to be a cloth-eared dodo. Amazon’s fly is far better tuned and trained. The lens that pulled such sharp focus on the Australian cricket team in The Test is back and in even better form in the AFL documentary Making Their Mark.

Making Their Mark consists of seven episodes distilled from 2500 hours of film shot at six clubs over seven months. COVID-19, which might have sabotaged the project, became its strength. With the teams congregated in hubs, the next unguarded moment was only ever round the corner.

You might find it at Carrara after crisis-struck Richmond have eked out a win over Fremantle. The Tigers are belting out their team song, but in an ante-room, coach Damien Hardwick is muttering: “What a poo game of footy.”

It was all or nothing. “We didn’t have a choice,” said Richmond CEO Brendon Gale. The Amazon fly pesters the reigning premier, as well it might, and Gale said not a drop of Mortein was allowed.

It cocks an ear to Richmond zoom board meetings after two incidents of erratic player behaviour, captures the tension at all levels of the club and fears about the fatal disruption that might ensue, but also the way the Tigers gathered themselves up again. Gale is annoyed by an emerging portrait of the club as arrogant and hubristic. “It’s not real,” he tells the board. “It’s rubbish.”

Hardwick’s agitation is plain, but he stills himself to address the team. “You feel like you’re this monster of a person in a monster of an organisation,” he says. “We’re not.” He points to a screen with an image of the Tigers with the premiership cup, and under it the legend: “Hungry and Humble”. “This is who we are,” he says.

It’s earthy. Of course it is. Even when on a winning run, a football club is forever on edge about the next match and the stress is always apparent. “F---ing dumb,” exclaims Hardwick early in a match the Tigers eventually win. “We’re playing a s--t brand of footy.” And that’s the repeat premiers.

Warning spoilers.
What I learnt from the doco is that most of the blokes that play are just great blokes and able to show their vulnerabilities.

Eddie Betts is a really nice guy and a great family man. Awesome bloke really and a star of the game As is Nic Nat, is also quite a funny guy looks like he’s fun to be around.
Stewart Dew is a crack up enjoyed watching him as well. Rory Sloane is a natural leader also I liked how he encouraged the youngsters to learn basic fundamentals of the game. From the doco it looked like Sloane and more influence on the playing group than Nicks.

The saddest is Coniglio, he just looks like he is hating playing footy. Doesn’t look like he deals with losing very well nor does he know what he is doing as captain. Unlike Richmond there’s not a lot of genuine connection between players at GWS. I’m not convinced by Leon Cameron’s connection with his leaders. I actually saw more connection developing with Stewie Dew and the young stars coming through at Gold Coast.
Coniglio really needs to come to start enjoying playing footy all over again maybe he should come to Richmond  :rollin

What is really noticeable is Hardwicks obsession with the system and how high our standards are set at Richmond. I also got another glimpse at his connection to his players and how much they respond to
him and the process. Gale is just a likeable guy and so down to earth.

Overall I liked the doco except the commentating overdubs. Don’t believe any club when they say they don’t listen to “external noise” they all do in some way.
It was great seeing us win again from a slightly different visual perspective.

Got around to finishing the whole thing. The final episode especially the last 30-40 mins is Tiger heaven  :thumbsup.

LOL Broady forgetting it was a night GF and surprised it was getting dark outside  :rollin.

As for Hugh 'look at me' Riminton and his ambush at our presser after the poking incident. It looks even more pathetic now ::). Benny sure saw through the media's agenda to use the sins of a few to rubbish the whole club's culture.

Agree Tigeritis. When we were playing like crap (eg: the Freo game), Dimma would rightly lose his nut but he wouldn't individualise. It was "we" had to play better. He put it on the whole team to get its act together and play "Richmond footy".

You didn't see Dimma individually walking around the rooms singling out, finger pointing and abusing player after player at a break in front of the whole group like Cameron did here.

Cameron came across as a coach using old coaching methods from a past era that no longer work nor inspire. GWS did have salary cap issues as well but it could be part of the reason why a number of GWS players have walked out and moved to other clubs.

It also seemed to me that Cameron doesn't know his captain's personality. Coniglio didn't come across as a guy who responds to old school criticism. He seems to get down on himself and struggle even more rather than getting fired up and trying to prove his critics wrong. As for Coniglio being captain, there were those rumours that he only got the gig because the Giants were afraid of him leaving. But unless we were on the inside then we don't know if those rumours were true. It was odd though that they would make a leadership change from Davis and Ward after their best season (2019) in their history.

That scene absolutely cracked me up. It’s like he only intended to say it to the one player then kept seeing another player that peeed him off and he couldn’t help himself.

As for our side of things. If you didn’t already know then you certainly see just how elite of a motivational speaker Dimma is. Can see why the players would just about run through a brick wall for him  :clapping

Benny’s intelligence, people focus and unrelenting focus on the club’s best interests are remarkable.
No wonder we’ve won 3 flags with this bloke in charge.

Loved episode 7. Watched the second half of it over and over,

I felt Coniglio was out of his depth as captain. Liked Sloane, Eddie Betts and Nic Nat

I thought Stewy Dew came across extremely well.

Coniglio came across poorly and Cameron worse.

Sloane is a good guy and a good leader
