Title: Expectations for next year
Post by: Chuck17 on October 14, 2017, 07:54:18 PM
Surely expectations are high for next year and barring injuries to our top 4 the sky is the limit

I wanted to make it a poll for everyone

I'm expected us to make the top 4 next year again. I think we will actually improve now that the players and coaches have full confidence in the game plan. I also think our depth players will continue to develop and create competition for spots. As with every team, injures will play there part  but unlike the Dogs we are a far more mature side with far more stars so I can't see the drop off like did. Endevour, motivation, buy-in and unity are all intangibles that only the playing group can really bring but I'm very confident that we will only get better in 2018.

Top 8 and see what happens. Tougher draw and other sides will have done their homework.

It's still hard to say it but we are clearly a Top 4 side if we can maintain and build on the following:-
* Health of the list, very few post season surgeries which is a massive plus
* The younger core continues to pressure starting 18 - Markov, Short, Ellis, Lennon, Bolton, Stengle and Menadue who can pressure Houli, Grigg, Broad, Bellis, Castagna, Butler & Townsend
* A bonus draft pick or two in 2nd and 3rd round from trading Lloyd/Miles
* A hunger to maintain/build intensity of effort and pressure which the game plan demands of all 22 players
* Our connection is our point of difference and has to go to a new level to stay that way. Like it or not, this is what other clubs will copy and we need to keep this ahead of the pack

Lots of ifs here but we were clearly a top 4 side in the H&A season and the clearly best side through the finals.

Top 4

I think our skill level will also develop significantly as a lot of our players that are 0-50 games start moving into the 50-100 game bracket

back to back baby

I have no expectations for next year.

This team has fulfilled its potential in the best possible way.

I am going to spend next season revelling in it, even if we plummet down the ladder.

But I'd love to pump North by 20 goals and have Dusty kick 8 of them.

Id say we make the 8, which is a pretty gutless way of saying we can finish anywhere from a standout top position through to just sneaking in.

But I'd say we can win it from anywhere in the 8.

Top 8.

We had a blessed year with injuries which thankfully masked our list deficiencies - Nank and Jack missed minimal games. Rance missed none I'm sure? If we don't organise a 2nd tall forward, genuine ruck backup, or somebody who can do both reasonably well then we are in just as much of a precarious situation as we were all year. Could Schache solve this issue?

We will have the most studied game plan in the league.

Tougher draw.

Target on our back.

And still a lot of good teams out there.

I see what you've done there. You've created a platform

Hard to say

Like it or not but "medal gate photo" could impact our start

We lose multiple players than it's going to be a great test of our depth

Even without "medal gate" think our start is going to be so important

Top 8 and see what happens. Tougher draw and other sides will have done their homework.

Reckon this is so true, draw is goingto be so interesting

We also had a great run with minimal injuries this season

Want top 4, but reckon top 8

We still have the best key backman in the league, a FF who kicks 50 odd goals a year without being a primary target, a very underrated captain and some tattooed guy for the team to rally behind. I don't think Houli will play as well as he did in the GF ever again (which I don't mind because he was amazing when it mattered the most) meaning 2018 is the year someone like Short or Markov can make a statement to try and force him out of the side.

Caracella isn't stupid and he probably knows all and well a lot of teams will try and counter the fast "undersized" pressure cooker gameplan but I back him, Leppa and Dimma to develop the younger brigade and produce another strategy to send us in the top 4 again.

Everything clicked from the second quarter against Freo. They realised they were a great side and could go all the way.

It reminded me of the time the Cats thumped us by 150+ and hardly lost a game from that moment on.

Top 8 I still reckon were a middling list with holes but we have our stars and some good depth. But it could still fall apart if jack or Rance got injured.

If we are a middling list, what does that say about the rest of the competition- especially the top 4 whom we beat by an average of 8 goals through the finals

In order of importance to the team how would you place out top 4, I would have

Rance
Martin
Cotchin
Jack

I'd swap Jack and Cotchin around. But that's about it.

Need at least three talls in the forward line or it won't work

Vickery might be gettable if we play our cards right.

Says we just gelled well and the rules atm favour a short running team. If you has the choice of Geelongs back line in its great era or Hawthorns or ours which would you pick? You might say Rance is the best player in all 3 but our other 5 backs wouldn't be in the top 6 I'd bet. Yet we didn't leak. As a collective we gelled.

That's a tough one. I would agree with your order. I see where dougey is coming from but the Port Game where Cotchin brought Rance back into the game with a pep talk, and his attack on the ball in the finals especially vs GWS I think has him edged above Jack Riewoldt. But only barely.

I don't think it'll be sustainable but we proved our game style can also work without Reiwoldt there. By no means do I want to find out how it'd work against a team like Adelaide (when they turn up) or Sydney though :lol

If we have a tougher draw next year and only win 14 instead of 15 we finish 6th with a % of118 not 3rd. We get a home final vs 7th and win. Play an away final against 3rd or 4th and lose. Have we got worse or just had a tougher draw?
Title: Re: Expectations for next year

Why do we lose to 3rd or 4th? If that did happen, we're worse. We wiped everyone else in the top 4 this year in finals so the draw didn't have anything to do with that..

Because it's an away game. We played 3 home finals effectively.

I think you are undervaluing the effectiveness of the game plan in finals champ
