West Coast may have to pick every available player on its list just to name a squad of 26 for Saturday's clash against Richmond, putting it in an extremely delicate position in the build-up to round eight.

The Eagles are unable to train in a normal capacity as they manage a staggering unavailability list that includes 17 injured players as well as suspended forward Samo Petrevski-Seton, who has accepted a one-match ban for rough conduct.

100 point win to get the season back on track?

Or play to our opponents level, 15 point win coming up!

Tigers’ burning question: Where do the goals come from?

Richmond has hit triple figures just once this season in worrying signs for coach Damien Hardwick. Without Tom Lynch, goals have been hard to come by for the Tigers. Interestingly, they’ve only scored four or more goals in a quarter seven times this year – that’s seven from 28 attempts. Veteran Jack Riewoldt remains the only player in double figures for goals this season, averaging just over two a game. But outside of his efforts, there isn’t another regular contributor. Garry Lyon told Fox Footy’s On the Couch: “The Tigers are in a really interesting situation.” Only West Coast and Hawthorn sit below them in worrying signs.

Richmond v West Coast Preview

Nic Negrepontis
SEN
4 May 2023

It would seem playing West Coast might just be this year’s free confidence booster and no team in the AFL needs that more than Richmond at the present time.

A few years ago, the idea of seeing the Tigers and the Eagles face off on the MCG would have been one of the more anticipated fixtures. Now, they sit in the bottom three alongside Hawthorn. Equalisation, hey?

Richmond has won four of their last five encounters with the Eagles, including a comfortable victory on the MCG last year.

They sit 2.5 games out of the top eight and while percentage isn’t a factor for them, momentum certainly is as they need to get cracking if they want to keep their season alive.

The Eagles were hapless in their 100-point loss to Carlton last Saturday night and while a couple of veteran bodies may be on their way back this weekend, it’s hard to see anything changing against Richmond.

Expect the Tigers to get back on track this weekend and breathe some life into their season.

Tip: Richmond by 60 points

Dwayne Russell’s pressure meter:

1 – Richmond

vs West Coast – MCG – Saturday afternoon

“I think Richmond's number one, I think they obviously just need to win at home,” Russell told SEN Afternoons. “The West Coast Eagles are 18th on the ladder.

“It is the official end of their 2023 finals campaign if they lose.

“Some have written them off completely now anyway, because they’re 1-1-5.

“I think Richmond's got the kind of list that can play their way back into form, but it needs a game like this to do it.

“Richmond are number one.”

It would be the worst loss of the year by far if we were to lose today and that's saying something  :-\. We would have to play as badly and with such lack of intensity as last week. Today, we're back home at the 'G, against the bottom side decimated by injury even more than us and the match is an early start for Eagles players (11:45am Perth time). There's no excuses.

I just want to see today AFL-standard intensity and teamwork, less needless handball, and for us to finish off our work inside 50 and especially in front of the sticks. Not another week of us kicking 1.5 to start the game and everyone dropping their heads due to us missing sitters ::).

Our work rate is rubbish.

We are getting our worked and out run by the bottom team.

Our skills are terrible even without pressure.

No pressure from us on the ball carrier and we are letting them slice and dice easily

They have taken 32 marks which means we are not pressuring nor are we tackling the ball carrier nor are we even creating a contest in the air. Our forwards aren’t even creating a spoil and are just watching the defenders take the easy mark.

We are a very very ordinary team.

A bunch of lazy players either not willing or not physically able to work to a desired level or standard.

Sadly, the cubs are having a mare. I know we want to give them games especially with our injuries but they are a liability. You can't have half a dozen players not contributing at all offensively or defensively and allowing their opponents to do whatever they want. Mind you some shouldn't be in the team this week such as Hugo, Clarke and Miller.

Forward line still dysfunctional but we got around a dozen goals from our mids today to kick a winning score. Still need to lift our intensity across the board. Not going get such a low-pressure game as we did today (Eagles 140 & us 155 pressure rating) that's for sure against any other team.

Take the win and hope it at least begins the process of rebuilding some confidence for the rest of the season. Reality check is more than likely coming next week :help but Essendon and GWS after that are the games we need to target to make something of this season.

For the 2nd half of the 3rd qtr as well as the final qtr it looked like a Richmond game

We played the way we should.  Yes there was still errors but the attack on the contests, the pressure was there. Those things have been few and far between this season. A couple of small things leading to the 3 Prestia goals and we were away

I get people are frustrated with the constant referencing to "a Richmond game, our brand" etc but for those 45 minutes yesterday that's what we got.

And for me at least it was good to see it

Finally, I am not sure the last time we won a game without Jack R kicking no goals and without Lynch. That was a huge positive for me

Surprised we lost the clearances. Thought Ryan and our midfield were very good.

Perhaps they really gained ascendancy in the second half.

I maintain the Cats are no good. They have beat bottom 4 sides and haven't won a game away from GMHBA.

I think next week will be a lot closer than you think. No Danger either. Stop Cameron and we beat the Cats. Simple as that.

Any other team and the game would have been well and truly gone at half time.
The skills of players on both sides was diabolical.

All the game told me was the worst team got beat by the second worst team in the comp.In fact i went out at half time and watched the second half later i just could not put up with just how bad we were.
I agree also i thought too many of the kids had a mare no excuse for them but it deflects from how poor the skills of others really was. Same old culprits as well.

do they even want to win eagles or hawks with that dusty petracca pick 1 coming to the spooner.

The first half was an extension to last weeks game. Rubbish.

Samson IMV was a 4 quarter player out of the young kids. There were also some very soft efforts from some others that i saw being at the ground.

Richmond d West Coast

The Tigers have their second win of the season, but just what it means will only be known after they face Geelong in an MCG blockbuster on Friday night. Should the Tigers win, or the result be close, this victory over the Eagles will indicate they have regained momentum. But should the Cats win heavily, this victory will be seen in the same light as the Blues’ 108-point thumping of the bottom-placed Eagles in round seven. What will give the Tigers confidence is, as Damien Hardwick noted on Saturday evening, that midfielders Dion Prestia, Tim Taranto, Shai Bolton, Jacob Hopper and Jayden Short, along with Dustin Martin, the latter more of a high half-forward, are reunited. Prestia, returning to the side, was brilliant against the Eagles. His three goals late in the third term all but ended the contest. Bolton was dynamic all afternoon, while Taranto and Hopper have surely ended ridiculous assertions that the Tigers should not have pursued the former GWS pair. The big if for the Tigers is whether they can truly compete while Tom Lynch is sidelined. For the Eagles, it was another tale of woe. Their injury list now numbers 19 players, typifying a season gone wrong. Oscar Allen, however, reinforced why he was missed last season. He booted four of the Eagles’ eight goals, and has been one of the few beacons of light in a season where coach Adam Simpson finds his future a major discussion point. - Jon Pierik

Richmond (104) - (58) West Coast

Cornes: “Did we learn anything about either of these two teams? Did it say anything about anyone?

“I was impressed by West Coast hanging in there. They were right in it with five minutes to go in the third quarter.

“I guess it says more about Richmond and there are some good Richmond players waking up on Monday morning feeling a little bit better about themselves on the back of that result.

“I speak of Jacob Hopper, who was really good, Dion Prestia kicked three and had a lot of the footy, and Shai Bolton was the big one, returning to form with his performance.

“There’s some good Richmond players that got themselves back into some form and they needed to to do that.”

AFL Report Card: Round 8

RICHMOND

It may have taken until the third quarter, but the Tigers eventually broke the Eagles with a dominant five-goal surge – including three-straight goals to Dion Prestia – in the period to march on to their first win since Round 2. It was proper party time in the fourth quarter as Damien Hardwick’s side looked like the Tigers of old, albeit against a severely undermanned Eagles outfit. With it, Richmond crucially remained in touch with the top eight ahead of a key test against Geelong next Friday night at the MCG.

In the votes

Shai Bolton was at his dominant best, booting three goals from 31 disposals in his best performance of 2023. Prestia was the hat-trick hero in the third term to really separate the hame, while off-season recruits Tim Taranto (30 touches, two goals) and Jacob Hopper (32 disposals, one goal) were also instrumental through the midfield.

Room for improvement

Although it mattered not in the end, inaccurate kicking in front of goal was the only real downside on the day for the Tigers, particularly in the first half where Hardwick’s side converted just 5.8. Richmond in the first quarter also allowed too many contested marks and for West Coast to play at its own pace before tightening the screws thereafter.

OVERREACTIONS, POSITIVES, NEGATIVES & UNDROPPABLES FOR ROUND 8

The Key Takeaway: Much-needed, hard-working win

It took some time, but Richmond eventually out-worked a plucky West Coast outfit at the MCG on Saturday.

Damien Hardwick’s side was made to work hard for a first win since Round 2. It wasn’t easy, but that’s exactly what they needed as opposed to a dominant thrashing.

In the end they opened the shoulders in the second half, kicking 10.6 to 4.5, and finished with +22 inside 50s and +11 scoring shots in a comfortable 46-point win.

It was a much-needed result and now gives them a chance to reset and reload.

The Positive: Bolton, Prestia and Dusty finding form

Shai Bolton has been below his best in 2023, but found form against the Eagles on Saturday.

The 2022 All-Australian lit up the ‘G with 31 disposals, 18 contested possessions, 13 score involvements, eight marks, seven clearances, two goal assists and three goals.

It’s a great sign ahead of this Friday night’s clash with Geelong.

Similarly, Dion Prestia was dangerous in a slightly altered role which saw him spend a little bit more time forward.

He kicked an equal career-high three goals - all in a row in a third-quarter meatball avalanche - had 13 score involvements (a game-high alongside Bolton) and two goal assists

Dustin Martin also tuned up for the Cats with 27 touches and indeed looked sharp.

What they need to tweak for next week: Bring full effort and intent

The Tigers took a while to start purring against the Eagles and cannot afford a similar tardy beginning against Geelong on Friday night.

The Cats have returned to winning form with five in a row, but opposition sides have shown that you can at times stymy them with pressure, effort and intent.

If Richmond bring anything less than that in Round 9, then it won’t end well.
