Post by: one-eyed on November 12, 2012, 03:50:00 PM
Former Richmond defender Joel Bowden has been inducted into the AFL Northern Territory Hall of Fame as a Legend.

Bowden’s decorated AFL career with the Tigers included back-to-back Jack Dyer Medals in 2004 and 2005, All Australian selection in 2005 and 2006, three finals matches and Australian representation twice in the International Rules series in Ireland in 2001 and 2004.

Bowden was inducted as a Legend along with fellow Territorians, Nathan Buckley and Peter Burgoyne. The three inductees join current Legends, Bill Dempsey, David Kantilla, Michael Long, Michael McLean, Maurice Rioli and Darryl White, who were inducted in 2010.

Welcome Joel to the Hall of Fame club. I was inducted as a legend into Stanley Street Werrisham's hall of fame for having the best cut lawn four years running.

(No need to google map the address, Its a suburb of Area 51  ;D)

Ditto.

He would fill a need in the current side if he was starting out now as a talented midsized HFF who had a very good defensive side to his game as well.

There are 4 Bowdos that I remember
1. Incredibly talentd youngster who looked to have the world at his feet before completely losing confidence due to injury - collarbone
2. Lost
3. Re-invented himself as a AA playing CHB/quarterback - to his absolute credit
4. Being the only guy not involved in the All in brawl vs Collingwood in his last game

On balance, well deserved

Bowdo was among the few with genuine class at Richmond among a plethora of spuds. Fine footballer.

Yep Magic, imagine Joel now playing alongside Cotch, Lids, Dusty and co. The coaches and the overall attitude of the Club we have now would have also eliminated that period in the early 00s under Spud when Joel would have those laconic brain fades trying to be too cute at times. In hindsight he was probably too creative and a step ahead of his spud teammates  :-\. The people who bag him remember him for those years just after he returned from the broken collarbones and not the older more mature Bowden who became a dual AA in our defence.

Not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if he's helping out the club in someway with its activities in Alice Springs.

He's currently on the AFL laws committee.

Would love him in an official role down at the club. Smart man just like Gale.

Top post. He was a very good player in a very bad team. He bled yellow and black.
I can't understand the angst about him when he played he did all he could do with so many duds around him. Richo in the same boat.
The arguements I used to have in Ton up club with the same guys that used to scream, curse and swear at both Richo and Bowden were the same idiots that were crazy with excitement at the prospects of Plapp and Silvester. :banghead

So true. Richo, Campbell and Bowden in particular copped a lot from frustrated feral supporters but the target was generally aimed in the wrong direction. These guys were among a few who could actually play. A whole heap couldn't.
