2009 Rookie Draft - Robert Hicks (Pick 7)

DOB: 2/09/91
Height: 175.9cm
Weight: 67.1kg
Club: Calder Cannons, TAC Cup

Video: http://bigpondvideo.com/AFL/230214

What the recruiters say:
Robbie is an explosive small forward/midfielder who split his 2009 season between the Calder Cannons, his school Penleigh Essendon Grammar and representing Victorian Metro in the NAB U18 National Championships.

Robbie is a tremendous athlete, with great pace and lateral movement. His strengths lie in his ability to hit stoppages at speed and break from the contest. Robbie actually ran a 10.7 sec 100m time in 2009 to qualify for the Pacific Games however the games were contested as Robbie chose to fulfil Victorian metro commitments. At the Draft Camp in Canberra, he ran an impressive 2.96 sec for the 20m sprint while also running a 24.04 sec time for the repeat sprint which ranked him 2nd overall.

In the U18 National Championships, Robbie averaged 2 goals per game from his small forward position with 3.4 against NSW in game 2. With a little luck from a couple of errant bounces he may have finished with at least 5 goals. Significantly, Robbie continued his output with a 4 goal haul against eventual championship winners WA on their home ground of Subiaco. As Vic Metro struggled early, Robbie was thrust into action off the bench with a goal in his 1st minute on the ground.

Due to school football and U18 championships commitments, Robbie managed only 6 games for his TAC club, the Calder Cannons where he again averaged 2 goals per game. His best performance was a 16 possession, 5 straight goal haul against NSW-ACT in round 2.

Robbie will add pace and goal kicking ability to our list in the years to come. He is also very strong overhead for a player of his size and has the explosive speed to shake his defender and come to the ball in the air.

Robert Hicks in his own words:

What type of player are you?
I believe I am a very quick, skilful player, who can kick goals and hit targets.  I'm a player who has the ability to run someone down from behind.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
Alwyn Davey and Cyril Rioli because of their elite pace and their ability to win the ball and kick goals.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Pace, skills and marking overhead on the lead.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Body-work one on one, defensive pressure in the forward line and timing of my front and centres/converting.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Essendon.  My mum and family barrack for Essendon and I grew up next to Windy Hill, with James Hird being my favorite player.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My Dad, Ashley.  As a kid I used to watch him play for Port Melbourne in the VFL and then when my career started as a junior, was coached by him. I trust him still with feedback on how I am playing and look for advice from him before and after games.

We have way to many short and lightly weighted players. Having this many of this type was and is unnecessary.

Calder Cannons coach Martin Allison (Robbie's coach) in Inside Football:

"Robbie went to school at Essendon Grammar and plays nationals for Vic Metro. Had a good carnival but he probably didn't kick as straight as he would have liked. A very pacy half forward type who gets front and centre amd can also lead up and present. Has got some really good leg speed. Type of player that only needs eight possessions to kick you four goals."

Hicks was taken to give backup in the small forward spot.

Our biggest weakness in 2008 and 2009 was the lack of defensive pressure in the forward 50

In

Nelson
Roberts
Taylor

we have rectruited 3 super quick small forwards who love to tackle. Hopefully one of them make it to support Nahas and the rookie listed Alrroy Gilligan

He kicks well off his left as well as his right I noticed in the highlight reel.  Just as happy to dodge left as right.

Still very small and didn't look super quick.

Agreed. We actually haven't had that much depth at all in this position and Brown/Pettifer's demise has made strengthening the small forward roles a must.

I actually like the idea of using rookie slots most of all on small forwards and rucks.

Hopefully the kids kicks on. :thumbsup

Anyone who can run the 100m in 10.7 secs is quick, he may just not be using it all the time.

Just to put into perspective how fast that is, the first world record recorded for the 100m sprint was 10.6 sec and stood for 9 years. Only three women have ever run sub 10.7 sec 100m races

Lets take it as a given that we wont be playing a game of football on the last weekend in Sept 2010.

Looks like we have a good chance of winning the GF sprint again. Well its better than nothing on the day.

Yes your probably right he must not have been using it all the time in the video I saw.  10.7s is electric, but often its the first 20m that matters, was he quick on that score too?  Pat Cash was notably quick over 20m a lot of successful athletes are.

Hicks joins
By Samuel Zito
Whittlesea, Wallan, Kilmore Star
22nd December 2009

CALDER Cannons small forward Robbie Hicks will head to Richmond next year after the Tigers snared the speedster with pick seven in the AFL rookie draft.

Originally from Doutta Stars, Hicks impressed recruiters while representing Vic Metro during the under 18 championships this year, kicking nine goals.

The Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School student also attracted the attention of recruiters at the AFL draft camp in Canberra during October, recording the second-best time in the repeated sprints test and the equal-tenth best time in the 20-metre sprint.

Standing at 176cm and weighing 68 kilograms, the Tigers were undeterred by the 18-year-old’s slight frame.

If he can build up the Warrick Farms a bit then i think he can make it. That goal where he got front and square was a ripper! It shows how easy it is when you get front and square, unlike Nahas who seems to crumb on the angle forcing him to kick around corners!

Give him a break!! He can run the 100 in 10.7 and He's a small forward in his first game. Far out some people here are quick to write players off. It gives me the Jimmy Britts.  :banghead
You could tell he was nervous which explained some of his fumbles but his crumbing goal was very good. Until someone can prove to me that there are no small player's who have gone on to become champions in their own right, I give players like Robbie time to DEVELOP!!!!!

I thought he was good.  Unlocked a nice piece of play on our fifty under a lot of pressure, was clean with the ball.  Nice opportunistic goal, just the type we are looking for from that class of player.  He pounces like a lynx on the loose ball with his speed so I reckon a few senior games will do him a world of good and get him really crackin.  He looks hungry for it, give him a run just like the other debutants.

I like that each new player this season has been given a couple of weeks to get a feel and show what they can do.  I don't see any reason or need to change that thinking now, especially at this late end of the season.  If you all remember back to the Brisbane game, I mentioned that Danny Daly spoke then of the very high regard he was held in by the football department so I would be very surprised if he doesn't get at least 1 and more likely 2 more games this season.  If anything, Ben Nason might struggle to hold his spot - he is showing all the signs to me of a kid running out of legs in his first season.
Title: Re: Rookie pick 7: Robbie Hicks
Post by: Ramps on August 02, 2010, 01:39:25 PM
i dont want to agree with smoke but I agree that Nason is just about running on empty now. as for smallish midget sized players - we have way to many atm and we need to cut a couple at the end of the season.

I was super impressed with Hicks when he used his pace in the 3rd and bolted towards goal on a fast break to give us a forward option. He was about 20m in the clear but uncharacteristically Webber's stuffed up the delivery. If we can crack some more fast transition turnovers, he will be more than valuable as a small forward when using his pace.

This kids a good footballer, not just pace, has smarts about him. We need to keep trying out these guys so we can get them right. Way too early to be making calls on him and who really caresabout size? There are plenty of his size playing afl, its a question of whther they can play so give him time.

Hicks' tricks on AFL stage
Laura Jolly
Leader
August 08, 2010 4:09PM

ROBBIE Hicks was pulling on his socks to play for Coburg in the VFL last weekend when he took an urgent call from Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan. Everything had changed.

Hicks, 18, had been named to play for Richmond's VFL affiliate, Coburg. But the Moonee Ponds resident instead ended up making his AFL debut in Richmond's gritty 20-point win over Adelaide the following day.

Better still, he kicked his first goal in the game-changing third term which saw the Tigers out-score the Crows six goals to two.

"It was very, very exiting," the former Calder Cannon told Leader.

Playing an AFL match on the hallowed turf of the MCG was the fulfilment of a childhood dream for Hicks, and he admitted feeling nervous before the match.

"I don't sleep well before games ... so I didn't sleep very well Friday," he said.

"Then on Saturday night I reckon I woke up at 3am and I didn't go back to sleep after that.

"(But) running through the banner and walking out on to the MCG before the game was an amazing feeling."

As well as his goal, Hicks collected seven disposals but commented he "would have liked a few more touches".

"But the game was a lot more quick than I'm used to," he said.

"The coach was happy and I did all the things I was supposed to, so hopefully I'll get another game in the next couple of weeks."

Hicks was promoted from Richmond's rookie list late last month alongside Irishman Jamie O'Reilly, the pair replacing the injured Nathan Foley and Adam Thomson. His elevation was apt reward for a strong showing in the VFL this season.

After playing the first seven games of the season in Coburg's reserves, Hicks was promoted to the seniors in Round 8. He then booted 12 goals from seven VFL senior matches before his AFL call-up.

The former Doutta Stars junior, who was a member of Calder's 2009 TAC Cup premiership side, said things had moved extremely quickly. "Two months ago I was playing in the reserves. Then I jumped to the ones, then last weekend I made my (AFL) debut."

It is a long way from the uncertain position he was in last November. After missing selection in the 2009 National Draft, Hicks put everything into pre-season training with Richmond.

He was hoping to be picked up as a rookie. To his relief his name was read out by the Tigers with their seventh pick in the rookie draft.

Hicks said he was relishing life at an AFL club.

"Everyone (at Richmond) is very positive and there's a strong focus on development and learning this year. Because there's such a strong focus on learning, the same structure and game plan is played throughout the levels, so it's the same at Richmond as it as at Coburg and in the Coburg reserves," he said.

Living near home was also a bonus, he said. "I'm still at home with mum and dad. I get stuck in traffic going into training, but mum does a lot for me and so does dad."

Hicks offered some advice to his former Calder Cannons teammates, who are aiming for this year's draft. "Try as much as you can not to stress out," he said.

"My head went at a million-miles-an-hour this time last year, thinking, 'Will someone take me?'.

"They should try and take their mind off the draft and focus on finishing their schooling, or if they're not at school, just focus on doing everything right and having a good finish to the season."

Hicks living his dream
richmondfc.com.au
By Mic Cullen 6:44 PM Wed 11 August, 2010

DREAMS are important.

At the start of the year, Richmond rookie Robert Hicks had a dream - to play an AFL game.

It seemed a way off, though - for the first two months of the year, the 176cm, 67kg Hicks was playing VFL reserves at Coburg, seemingly a million miles away from the MCG that he could see every day when he turned up at Punt Rd to train.

But after seven reserves game he moved to Coburg firsts, then 12 goals from seven VFL senior games meant that when the Tigers put Nathan Foley and Adam Thomson on the long-term injury list, the 18-year-old was ready for the promotion.

Hicks, who lives with his parents in Moonee Ponds, said it was hard work - something he wasn’t particularly known for when he arrived at the club - that got him the opportunity to play that cherished first game.

"I did heaps and heaps of extra sessions whether it be extra goalkicking sessions or extra tackling sessions, just trying to get myself up to the level,” Hicks told richmondfc.com.au.

“There were a few things I knew I lacked, and I put a lot of effort in to get them to a higher standard.

“There are still a few things I need to work on, which is probably an understatement, but it feels really good to get these games in so I can build towards next season.”

Almost all players say after their first game that they can’t believe the speed everything moves at, and Hicks is no different, although the games have shown him more things he needs to work on before next year.

“It is a big bonus, getting that experience - I know what the pace is like, I know what I have to do, I know how much bigger the bodies are at AFL level and how much weight I have to put on," Hicks said. “It was a very big eye-opener getting those couple of games.

“The first half of the first game just flew - the half-time siren went and we went into the rooms and I was sitting on the floor, thinking ‘this is already half over - where’s it gone?’

“I enjoyed it more than anything in the whole world, but everything moves so fast, I don’t think you take it all in.

“I got a goal and I was pretty happy with it, although my celebration was probably a little bit over the top, but what can you do? I was ecstatic - everyone in the team got over to me and it was a really great feeling.”
