Not sure why you put Higgins in with those other two liabilities atleast he put his body on the line and won contests. I’d admit he was a little wayward by foot but he has a real crack.
Ellis was useless with His nothing possessesions that give nothing to the team. Useless.
-
Ellis and Conca were both standout bad. Ellis going in hard near the end of the last quarter was great but it sort of felt like "I have been poo. Better do something to keep my spot". Would be happy to see these two as the outs.

Im not a huge Kmac fan but I thought he was good yesterday. Best game i've seen him play in a while.
Bellis was stinky should be dropped.

Bellis was stinky should be dropped.
Kmac one of few with sticky fingers, fear of contact yesterday led to a fumbly effort from most of the side.
-
Are you serious? Was fumbly as stuff - especially below the knees.....like he always is.... :shh
-
Much as I don't like it, I think Dimma will want his 3 amigos back in the forward line, so I think Higgins makes way for Butler.
I am not confident Lambert will be fit, but if he is, then he will come in to the team. One of K.Mac, Conca or Ellis will have to make way, and I am betting it is Ellis.
I cannot see Broad getting dropped.
-
There is no way broad or Conca get dropped, none
Broad has touched the ball 4 times each game last 2 weeks
Will be 50/50
-
Lambert comes straight back in, for who? Higgins? George? Broad? Someone will be very unlucky.
Not sure Butler comes in as he has been out for sometime. He makes us better in the front half so hopefully he gets through Saturday night in the first instance.
Given The Hawks don't have an exceptionally tall forward line Broad could be the one who misses.
-
If Butler comes through half a game of vfl next week not sore he comes in, need to get that mosquito fleet together work as tandem.Missed him big time.
Lambert if fit comes in to runs hard two ways.If Lambert is not fit I wouldn't be against bring in Lloyd.
-
It's my belief that Broad is carrying an injury and has been nursing himself through games, he was fantastic through the finals last year and has shown through out the year that he is more than capable and because of that will be very reluctantly dropped.
Brandon Ellis was by far the worst player on the ground yesterday and has shown minimal form over the last half dozen weeks and is our weakest player. I would drop him for lambert.
Higgins has been excellent for us in his first year and in a perfect world probably plays but a fully fit Butler with the important role he plays and the experience finals football that he has gets the nod over the kid.
Kmac plays because of his size and strength, Conca plays because he tackles.
The only other person from the VFL I'd bring into the side if i had to would be Sam LLoyd.
-
Five day break goes against Butler should he play Saturday night.
-
2 players coming back from injury and 1 with a 5 day break from a vfl game.
will we risk it?
I think more likely butler to have another week or 2 off
-
Lambert is arguably our fittest player. We’ve all seen him run all game does it week in week out. He’s apparently been at full training so won’t be any trouble for him to play.
Butler hasn’t the same amount of stamina as Lambert but I’d like to see him play maybe plays half a game on Saturday. He’s also supposedly had 2 weeks of full training.
B Ellis needs to go. Too soft.
Conca isn’t a finals player. Needs to go.
I’d be happy to see how that team performed. No Ellis, No Conca, No excuses!
-
If you think Broad will get dropped through form, you have rocks in your head.
Same goes for McIntosh.
I’m preying Bellis and Conca make way for Lambert and Lloyd for the first final as both are much better footballers than the first two.
I would give Butler a full game of VFL footy before even considering him for any final.
Thursday night is BS too.
-
In: butler, lambert
Out: Ellis, Conca
Totally agree. Both Ellis and Conca were poor against the Dogs.
-
I have a sinking feeling that somehow Conca will get a game
-
Gez Lloyd is killing it in vfl and hasn't put a foot wrong in afl.I reckon he comes in gives us a bit more class and skill.I thought I will never say that.
-
Townsend done for the year with a fractured ankle, having surgery this afternoon.
8-10 week recovery, was probably unlikely to come in though I think.

Dont think any player that wasnt named in the round 22 game where it felt like they were resting players with the slightest of niggles and giving players who may be considered in case of injury/poor form to our best 22 were likely to come in for finals. Still sucks for our vfl finals campaign though that towners will miss.

I was wondering whether it would come down to Townsend vs Higgins for one of the places but Townsend's injury has put an end to that. Butler and Lambert must come in. Ellis and Conca are the two most at risk of being dropped.

Ch 9 news said Lambert was in doubt as he only did handball drills at Thursday training (they showed him in the rehab group).
Mark Stevens on Ch 7 also said Lambert didn't do much at training but said the Tigers are still hopefully he'll play against the Hawks.

Flag Tiger misses training ahead of final

KANE Lambert watched on as his teammates went through their paces on Thursday at Punt Road, a week out from Richmond's qualifying final against Hawthorn at the MCG.
The premiership Tiger, who was named in the 40-man Virgin Australia AFL All Australian squad this week, was expected to take part in the session as part of his build-up to next week's game.
But wearing runners and a hoodie, Lambert was restricted to handball drills with injured teammates Nathan Drummond, Mabior Chol and Shai Bolton during the main group's warm-up.
He then went inside and didn't return while the rest of last week's team, plus Sam Lloyd and Ryan Garthwaite, ran through a light session.
Lambert and fellow premiership player Dan Butler are attempting to prove their fitness this week after suffering similar ankle injuries in the past two months.
Both had surgery to strengthen their joints; Lambert in the days after he sprained his ankle against Gold Coast in round 21, and Butler a few days earlier.
Butler's injury, while similar, was sustained in round 16 against Adelaide and didn't respond to non-surgical rehabilitation as was hoped.
However, he appears to have turned a corner and took part in Thursday's session with the Tigers planning to give him limited minutes in Saturday night's VFL qualifying final against Williamstown at Punt Road.
Coach Damien Hardwick said on Wednesday the six-day turnaround from that game to Thursday night wouldn't necessarily affect Butler's chances of playing in both.
Captain Trent Cotchin trained on Thursday despite nursing a few sore spots over the last few weeks, as did David Astbury, who was icing his right Achilles – the injury that saw him miss round 22 - on Saturday night after the win over the Bulldogs.
Cotchin moved freely in the light session and is expected to be fine to face the Hawks.
Dion Prestia, who has endured an interrupted season and also didn't play in round 22, trained without issue and appears to have pulled up well from Saturday's game.
All Australian quartet Alex Rance, Dustin Martin, Shane Edwards and Jack Riewoldt backed up from Wednesday night's function and were also part of the enthusiastic hit-out.
The players returned to the club on Wednesday after a few days off but it was their first session on the track since their mini-break.
Earlier this week, premiership forward Jacob Townsend was ruled out for the season with a fractured fibula that required surgery.

Clarko would be oh so nervous about Kane Lambert...:shh
-
The AFL website is tipping Lambert to come in for Broad.
RICHMOND's best 22:
B: Dylan Grimes, Alex Rance, Nick Vlastuin
HB: Jayden Short, David Astbury, Bachar Houli
C: Shaun Grigg, Trent Cotchin, Kamdyn McIntosh
HF: Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy, Shane Edwards
F: Daniel Rioli, Jack Riewoldt, Jason Castagna
Foll: Toby Nankervis, Dustin Martin, Kane Lambert
I/C: Reece Conca, Jack Graham, Jack Higgins, Brandon Ellis
In: Kane Lambert
Out: Nathan Broad
UNAVAILABLE: Jacob Townsend, Dan Butler
It's a line-ball call on Brandon Ellis or Nathan Broad as to who makes way for an expected fit Kane Lambert, with Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Higgins and Reece Conca also in the discussion. A quiet couple of weeks and a few potential sore spots for Broad mean he might be the unlucky omission. The run of McIntosh and Ellis against the Hawks will be important, while Higgins probably holds his spot this week. Broad has dropped off in key statistical categories including intercept marks, tackles and general disposals in the last three weeks, which could be a red flag. Dan Butler's potential return in the second final – he's expected to play VFL this week and miss the Hawks' game – will make Higgins and possibly Jason Castagna nervous. But for now, unless the bye doesn't cure a litany of bruises and superficial injuries, changes should be minimal. - Jennifer Phelan

Balmey post-VFL final:
* Butler pulled up well.
* Lloyd and Garthwaite are next in line so that's why they didn't play VFL tonight.
* Lambert has only missed a couple of games so didn't need to play VFL tonight. Expects him to be back Thursday night.
* Wished the AFL & VFL would speak to each other. [Clearly we're not happy about the 5-day break between VFL & AFL Qualifying Finals].
-
Would be surprised if Butler plays Thursday night. Needs a full game next week at VFL.
-
I would take the risk put Butler in we need him adds class to our forward line pace and pressure and reunite the mosquito fleet.

B: Dylan Grimes, Alex Rance, Nick Vlastuin

Out: Brandon Ellis. Reece Conca.
I’d also put Markov ahead of Brandon Ellis and Lloyd ahead of Conca in the pecking order for selection.
-
Williamstown got 3 goals last night due to Markov direct opponent leading him to the ball
Seen enough to say he will get delisted

While I get his angst
Facts are the VFL is an independent competition.
It isn't the AFL reserves
The VFL have always played their finals on Saturdays and Sundays. I would argue the VFL have accomodated Richmond as best they can under the circumstances = we aren't playing today
And yes I know the AFL funds the VFL comp through AFL Victoria but when the AFL abolished the reserves part of the charter was for the VFL comp to retain a certain level of independence.
It is and remaons a semi professional competition
If people want it changed then the AFL re-introduces a Resevre comp that ALL clubs must compete in.

Chris Cavanagh looks at the biggest questions each club must answer heading into finals
Chris Cavanagh,
Herald Sun
September 2, 2018
RICHMOND
WILL THE TIGERS’ FAMED PRESSURE RETURN?
RICHMOND’S method and successful finals campaign last year was all built around pressure, but that pressure has dropped off late in the season. Since Round 17 the Tigers ranked 14th for pressure and lost the pressure count against Western Bulldogs and Essendon in their past two matches — both were victories. Coach Damien Hardwick acknowledged last Wednesday it was a bit of a concern but added his side had “been winning the ball back anyway”. Richmond would want to lift in that area in September, though, if it is to again reach the pinnacle.
WHO ARE THE UNLUCKY OMISSIONS?
IT happens at this time every year but there looks set to be some serious heartbreak on the horizon for a couple of Tigers. With premiership players Kane Lambert and Dan Butler, who are both on the way back from ankle complaints, pushing to return against the Hawks, there are likely to be one or two unlucky players left out. Reece Conca has not done a lot wrong but he could make way for Lambert, while Jack Higgins has been super in playing 18 games on debut this year but may have to make way for Butler. Remarkably, those changes would leave Richmond with 21 premiership players in its side, with Jacob Townsend (ankle) the only one missing and Jayden Short in his place.

Tigers seem settled
Greg Denham
Senior Sports Writer
September 3, 2018
The mystery surrounding the make-up of seven of the eight finalists could continue until game day of the four matches in an intriguing first week of the finals series.
The 2018 series starts on Thursday night at the MCG when Richmond meet Hawthorn, with personnel for the qualifying final far from established, with the exception of the minor premiers, who may make just one change. Teams for the Tigers-Hawks contest have to be named on Wednesday night, with final 22-man teams named the following night for the weekend’s three other games.
Premiership favourites Richmond, who are the most settled of all the remaining clubs, say they are highly unlikely to make a late change once they name their team 24 hours before the first centre bounce of the series. Officials of other clubs still involved have flagged late changes are possible because of fitness concerns.
Richmond general manager of football operations Neil Balme yesterday told The Australian it was against the Tigers’ policy to change advertised teams for the sake of it.
“I don’t think we’ve made a late change all year,” Balme said. “And I doubt whether there will be a late change this week. We’ve had two weeks to pick a team and we’ll be sitting down (with the) match committee on Tuesday.”
The Tigers appear certain to recall All Australian squad member Kane Lambert, who has missed the past two rounds, while Dan Butler, who has not played at the elite level since round 16, may struggle due to the five-day break. Both had minor ankle operations.
Lambert completed yesterday morning’s 55-minute training session at Punt Road, while Butler played the first half of a VFL final at Punt Road the previous night.
Sam Lloyd and Ryan Garthwaite did not play in the VFL but trained yesterday and are on standby should there be an unforeseen injury this week. Balme said Richmond would have their final lead-up training session on Wednesday.
Coach Damien Hardwick last week forecast some of his players not selected would have reason to be disappointed after the returns of Trent Cotchin, Dion Prestia and David Astbury.
“There’s going to be some players that are stiff, there’s no doubt about it, but that’s the nature of the game,” Hardwick said.
“We’ve got some players who are playing some really good footy at the lower level and guys that are hanging in there at the moment at AFL level. We’re really blessed to have a great deal of talent that could quite easily come in and play AFL footy at any given stage.”

The Barometer - First week of finals
Herald-Sun
Sept. 3, 2018
RICHMOND
ON THE BLOCK: There were no fresh injuries — a familiar phrase this year — from the Tigers’ lucky Round 23 win against the Bulldogs. A few players were a fair way off their best but any changes will come down to finding room for potentially two returning premiership players. Reece Conca and Jack Higgins seem the obvious candidates but Brandon Ellis and Kamdyn McIntosh have both been dropped this year. It might come down to Higgins v Ellis.
ON THE CUSP: Those two players mentioned above are of course Kane Lambert and Dan Butler. Both have had minor ankle surgery in recent weeks and have taken different paths back. Lambert hasn’t played but the Tigers say he’s on track for a date with the Hawks on Thursday night. Butler played a half in the VFL on Saturday night, for just three touches and goal. Is that enough? Sam Lloyd and Ryan Garthwaite sat out of that game and are next in line if a last-minute crisis hits.
AL PATON’S FORECAST: It all comes down to this: can the Tigers switch their finals-level pressure back on this Thursday. It has slipped dramatically in the past month, but the counterpoint is Richmond hasn’t really had anything to play for in that time and used the final home-and-away rounds to manage some of its stars (remember Toby Nankervis missing a week with a sore quad?), a luxury no other finals side has enjoyed. But it’s been decades since the Tigers were in this position and no one will know for sure how they will respond until Thursday night. In their final five matches last year the Tigers averaged a pressure factor of 198, clearly No.1 in the comp. If they can reproduce that this week, they should be preparing for a home preliminary final.

D-Day for sore Tigers: Mid, forward put to the test

PREMIERSHIP Tiger David Astbury has backed midfielder Kane Lambert to prove his fitness on Tuesday and line up against Hawthorn on Thursday night at the MCG.
Astbury said before the Tigers' main training session that he was confident Lambert would be fit to return from an ankle injury suffered in round 21.
"Today is our main session so he'll get a good opportunity to test it," Astbury said.
"He's put together a huge body of work this season and he's a very important player to us.
"I'm not across the full situation with the medical staff but Kane's as diligent as ever, he's given himself every opportunity and from what I'm hearing he'll be every chance to play on Thursday night, which we're excited about.
"He's an unbelievable warrior and I'm sure he'll be fine."
Lambert looked to move freely in the session, engaging in a number of one-on-one duels with captain Trent Cotchin, who also trained freely despite managing soreness late in the season.
Dan Butler also pressed for selection at the Punt Rd session after playing a half of VFL on Saturday night following his round 16 ankle injury.
The premiership forward has been deemed fit for selection, but a decision on his availability will be based on his level of match fitness and the turnaround between his VFL hit-out and Thursday night.

In the Mix - Qualifying Final

RICHMOND
Get them in: Kane Lambert is expected to return from the ankle injury he sustained in round 21. Dan Butler is the other big discussion point this week with the premiership forward picking up three touches and kicking a goal in his limited VFL minutes on Saturday night. Ryan Garthwaite and Sam Lloyd were held over from the same game given the short turnaround to Thursday night.
Under the pump: Tough question. Nathan Broad has been down in a number of key areas lately but is a major part of their backline while Brandon Ellis and Reece Conca could be discussed as options as well.
Medical room: Jacob Townsend is out for the season with an ankle injury but Lambert and Butler should both be physically fit to be selected. Trent Cotchin is sore but will play, while Liam Baker'schances of a finals recall have taken a hit with the small forward offered a one-match VFL suspension for rough conduct against Williamstown.
Verdict: If Lambert returns, someone has to make way. The run of Ellis and Kamdyn McIntosh will be important against the Hawks while Conca's work in the middle could enable Jack Graham to be released to focus on Tom Mitchell. It'll be little consolation to the unlucky omission – especially if Butler plays and Jack Higgins is squeezed out – but the brutal fact remains, only 22 get to play.

Richmond star Lambert expected to return for Hawks blockbuster
By SEN
4 Sept. 2018 4:00pm
Richmond footy boss Neil Balme is confident star midfielder Kane Lambert will be fit for Thursday night’s Qualifying Final showdown against Hawthorn.
Lambert hasn’t played since Round 21 after having surgery on his ankle to repair a partial syndesmosis sprain.
Balme says he would be surprised if Lambert doesn’t come up after getting through training today.
“He’s good, he trained quite well today so I would be very surprised if anything happens to him that stops him from playing,” Balme told SEN’s KB and The Doc.
“We’ve been fairly confident, he missed two games but he’s played every other game and he’s in pretty good shape.
“I’d be surprised if he’s not fine.
“He’s been pretty comfortable over the last week and a half or so.”
The 26-year-old’s return will be a huge boost for the reigning premiers as they look to advance to their second consecutive Preliminary Final at the expense of the Hawks.
Over 95,000 fans are expected to pack out the MCG for the blockbuster clash.

I wonder if he pulled up well after vfl if he he didn't train all session .
He was out there , went in early and didn’t partake in set plays

Tom Browne on Ch 7 news tonight said Lambert is a "certainty" to play Thursday night.

Dimma confirmed Butler out, wont play vfl either.
Lambert will play, you would think one of Bellis/Conca comes out.

PREMIERSHIP forward Dan Butler has run out of time to press his case for Thursday night's clash with Hawthorn, with Richmond deciding he won't play at any level this weekend.
However, coach Damien Hardwick confirmed the Tigers would be bolstered by the return of midfielder Kane Lambert for the qualifying final at the MCG.
Butler hasn't played an AFL match since round 16 because of an ankle injury, but did play a half of a VFL qualifying final on Saturday night.
Hardwick said Butler would train this weekend instead of playing in the Tigers' VFL semi-final against Essendon on Saturday, in a bid to boost his fitness.
The Tigers completed a short captain's run at Punt Road on Wednesday morning, with Ryan Garthwaite, Sam Lloyd and Connor Menadue part of the extended squad.
Lambert trained and will be named on Wednesday night after last playing in round 21.

Strange Butler won't play vfl.
-
Either Butler's ankle is still not right or perhaps we don't want him playing at North Port Oval which can be a bog?
You'd presume now there will be only one change. Lambert in for one of Ellis, Higgins or Broad (don't see the latter being dropped though).

Interesting omission at selection tonight

More than a few people suspected Ellis might be in the gun so it's not really an "intersting" omission though is it? :shh
