Kevin Bartlett on Richmond clash jumper in the grand final
EDITOR ON DUTY:
Herald-Sun
September 14, 2017
RICHMOND in “canary” yellow?
Tigers great Kevin Bartlett won’t have it — should his beloved Tigers reach the AFL grand final and meet Adelaide.
The veteran broadcaster’s lashing of any suggestion was among the big stories on Wednesday as Geelong, GWS and Sydney all addressed the media ahead of the weekend’s semi finals.
LET’S not jump the gun just yet, but Richmond great Kevin Bartlett believes a major jumper clash furore could loom if the Tigers are to meet Adelaide in the Grand Final.
If the Tigers and Crows win their respective preliminary final bouts next weekend, they could meet in the final game of the season with one side potentially asked to wear its clash strip.
Richmond has met Adelaide once this season — in Round 6 — and wore its alternate canary yellow strip.
Having finished atop the ladder, the Crows would have the choice of what jumper they wanted to wear should the issue blow up in Grand Final week.
But Bartlett is adamant that Richmond should stand firm.
“When a side gets to a Grand Final they should be (in) — and always should wear — their traditional jumper,” he declared on SEN.
“Always wear their traditional jumper.
“Hopefully the Tigers won’t fall for anything from the AFL.
“If the AFL says ‘you’ve got to wear the canary jumper’ — you tell them to get stuffed.”
“That is ridiculous, that will not happen. Richmond cannot play in a Grand Final looking like budgerigars or canaries.
“If they want to charge us $50,000, who gives a stuff?”
The league said it would not be considering the potential match-up until closer to the match.
It would not be the first time that Richmond has found itself amid a finals jumper storm, having worn its home strip against Port Adelaide in the 2014 elimination final.
The Power wore their black and white strip, while Fremantle wore an alternative strip when it played Hawthorn in the 2013 Grand Final.
St Kilda wore its clash guernsey in both 2010 Grand Finals against Collingwood, which Bartlett maintained never should have occurred.
“St Kilda let themselves down badly in those Grand Finals … (and) should never have agreed to play in those Grand Finals with their (clash) jumper,” he said.
“You’ve got to say no.
“How many people get confused with the away jumpers in the game? Half the time you don’t need an away jumper. It is absolute rubbish.”

I'm with KB, why should we have to wear high vis vests ffs
-
I wont ask my usual question because I bet the little stuffer hasnt
-
For mine, I agree however Adelaide is probably the only team in the comp in which a genuine jumper clash exists.
-
Our Opposition next week is GWS/West Coast, so wgaf for now its not relevant.
-
Yeah - I'm not totally blameless, but all this jumping straight to the GF is wearing on me.

Craig Bellamy laughs off Richmond clash strip talk
Roy Ward
Sydney Morning Herald
September 14 2017 - 4:50PM
Craig Bellamy respects history as much as anyone but when it comes to grand finals, he says he would play in any colour.
Fairfax Media reported on Wednesday that the AFL is poised to consider whether Richmond will have to wear their yellow clash jumper should they make the grand final and face the Adelaide Crows.
Bellamy has won grand finals in lime green Canberra jerseys as a player and the Storm's navy and purple as a coach but he said the jumper colour meant little compared with playing for a premiership.
"They can throw us in orange jumpers if they like, if we are playing a grand final who cares?" Bellamy said on Thursday.
"We are a club just 20 years old, the Tigers would be over 100 years old, I would imagine, so older guys would have come through the club, played for the club and they wouldn't have been in a grand final for a while so I can understand they want to play in their traditional colours, all clubs would.
"But if they said if you want to play in a grand final you have to play in these colours, if you don't play in them colours you ain't in a grand final then I think I know what choice they would make. But that is up to the AFL."
Bellamy said he had given next to no thought on what colour the Storm will wear when they play either Brisbane Broncos or Penrith Panthers in a preliminary final at AAMI Park on Friday week.

AFL grand final jumper clash between Richmond, Adelaide could be sorted by a coin toss
The Age
20 September 2017
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan believes a coin toss "is plausible" to decide on a potential AFL grand final jumper clash between Richmond and Adelaide.
Both this year and in 2015, Richmond wore their predominantly yellow clash jumper featuring a black sash – the inverse of their famous home jumper in away games against the Crows, whose home jumper contains navy, red and yellow horizontal stripes.
In 2016, Adelaide wore their mainly white clash jumper in a match against the Tigers at Etihad Stadium. Not since 2014 have the clubs played a game in which both sides have worn their first-choice jumpers.
"The grand final, you can't have a jumper clash. If the players are in their traditional strips, six million watching [on TV] at the peak, 100,000 there [at the ground], [broadcast] around the world, you can't have people confused about who they are," McLachlan said on Fox Footy.
"Who plays in what jumper and if it happens, we're working on it.
"I don't think there's a home team [for the grand final]. The highest-ranking team gets the advantage of a longer break because you've got to make a decision on that, but in the end it's not a home final.
"I think it needs to be fair, now whether that's a toss of the coin or and arm-wrestle or something, I think that's our view that if it gets to that situation to make a decision you do it in a way it's not use telling one or the other. Everyone understands that there has to be a decision make and we'll work out a fair way to do it."
First though, the Tigers must overcome the Giants in an MCG preliminary final on Saturday, while the Crows need to beat Geelong on Friday night at the Adelaide Oval.
Club great Kevin Bartlett insisted on SEN last week that the Tigers must wear their traditional jumper if they make it to their first decider in 35 years.
"When a side gets to a grand final they should be, and always should wear their traditional jumper, always wear their traditional jumper," Bartlett said.
"Hopefully the Tigers won't fall for anything from the AFL. If the AFL says you've got to wear the canary jumper – you tell them to get stuffed.
"That is ridiculous, that will not happen. Richmond cannot play in a grand final looking like budgerigars, or canaries. If they want to charge us $50,000 who gives a stuff?"
McLachlan did not think that leaving the decision to the toss of a coin trivialised it.
"I don't think it's trivialising because a coin toss decides a lot of things," he said. "Maybe KB tosses with Mark Ricciuto and they decide, and if Richmond plays in the gold jumpers it's KB's fault. But I think a coin toss is plausible."
Richmond were in 2014 embroiled in a jumper controversy involving Port Adelaide when the Power ended up wearing their "prison bars" Port Adelaide Magpies jumper top avoid a clash in a home elimination final at Adelaide Oval.
The Tigers subsequently unveiled their mainly yellow clash jumper ahead of the 2015 season, and were praised by the Power for doing so.
St Kilda (2010) and Fremantle (2013) both wore predominantly white second-choice jumpers as the lower-ranked side in grand finals against Collingwood and Hawthorn respectively.

“It’s ridiculous”: KB responds to Robbo’s clash jumper attack
By Justin Talent
SEN
22 September 2017
Kevin Bartlett has dismissed Mark Robinson’s belief that Richmond would be upset at the Tiger great’s push to have his former side wear their traditional jumper in lieu of a jumper clash against Adelaide in a potential Grand Final.
Robinson yesterday told SEN’s The Run Home that he believed Richmond officials would be furious at Bartlett for his latest campaign, and says that the issue is not yet important for a side that is still to book their place in the Grand Final, calling it a tell-tale sign of getting ahead of yourself.
Bartlett today responded to the Herald Sun chief football writer on SEN’s Hungry For Sport, defending the importance of the Tigers avoiding wearing their clash strip and holding firm that he is not getting ahead of himself.
“It is important because when Richmond beats the Giants on Saturday, they’ll be into the Grand Final,” he said.
“Does it become important then Robbo? What happens then? Is Mark Robinson going to take up the cause and attack the AFL for stupidity in having clash jumpers?
“Someone has got to bring it to attention cause if you don’t, the AFL will just ride straight over the top of you with furphies.
“(AFL CEO) Gill McLachlan said that we don’t want to upset millions of people watching the game and we have got to be able to differentiate between the two sides and they won’t be able to. That’s rubbish.
“Some marketing goose three or four years ago who probably no longer works at the AFL probably came up with the idea that there might be a bit of a clash there.
“On TV the replay of the 1977 Grand Final between Collingwood and North Melbourne, not one person mentioned actually mentioned there was a clash between the jumpers. Blue and white vertical stripes playing black and white vertical stripes with black shorts and white shorts.
“There is no clash. It is a made up furphy. That’s not getting ahead of ourselves, I’m just stating a point. It’s ridiculous.”
Bartlett says his campaign is for the greater good of all Victorian sides for when they play their next Grand Final.
“It’s not just Richmond. I’m bringing up a topic that is important for Melbourne when they win a premiership. It’s important for St Kilda if they get through their next Grand Final and win a premiership. It’s important for Carlton, it’s important for Essendon,” said the five-time premiership champion.
“How would Essendon fans on Grand Final Day like to be running out with a red jumper and a black sash? That wouldn’t suit Essendon fans. If Carlton fans had to come out with a white jumper with CFC written on the front of it, that’s not the Carlton jumper.
“What I’m suggesting to the AFL is stop giving us all this rubbish about clash jumpers because sooner or later Essendon and all those great traditional clubs are going to be playing in Grand Finals and they want to play in their traditional jumpers.
“Don’t tell us that Essendon can’t play in their famous jumper or Carlton can’t play in their famous jumper or Melbourne because it is going to clash with someone.”

KB is 100% correct and as an ex champion player with an epic number of games under his belt would know more than blobs
-
I agree with KB.
Never should have a clash strip and that goes for any game. Collingwood don't. We shouldn't!
And also I hate the yellow we are using on the jumper.
As long as I've been supporting it's been this colour which is the same as what's around the borders of this site.

AFL has said we must wear our clash strio in the GF
THE AFL has announced that Richmond will wear its predominantly yellow clash guernsey in next week's Grand Final against Adelaide.
AFL football operations boss Andrew Dillon said the Crows would wear their home guernsey in the match as the highest-ranked team participating in the Grand Final.
"The AFL legislates that the home team has the right during the home and away season, and it was the view here that with a clash, the AFL had previously made the decision for the higher-ranked team to have its choice," Dillon said.
Tigers legend Kevin Bartlett was quick to register his opposition, tweeting: "Richmond should and must tell the AFL to get stuffed and it will not wear its clash jumper against Adelaide. The club must not roll over."
Asked whether the AFL's decision was disappointing, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick made it clear he had bigger Crows to stone.
"We'd play in a hessian bag to be perfectly honest. I stole that from (Richmond property steward) Guiseppe Mamone, so make sure you put his name in there," Hardwick joked.

Is this the same afl who votes yes on SSM but can't create an environment in which its gay players feel safe and comfortable enough to come out in?
-
stuff em
-
Richmond's jumper was in existence when Adelaide entered the AFL, so why were they allowed their jumper design in the first place if it was going to clash with existing patterns - 'Talk about Dumb' :thumbsdown
-
So will the umpires wear blue? Or that fluro green thing that's an even greater clash with our clash jumper than our regular one is with Adelaide's?
-
I'll be honest and say it doesn't really worry me.
I'm just pumped we are into a GF.
-
of course Chuck, with a very short black sash

RICHMOND will accept the AFL's decision that will see the Tigers wear their predominantly yellow clash guernsey in next week's Grand Final against Adelaide.
Speaking to ABC Radio on Saturday before she was made aware of the official decision, Richmond president Peggy O'Neal said her club wouldn't put up a fight over the issue.
"We'd all like to be in our traditional jumpers but the AFL decides those things. It's not us, and we'll play our best game in whatever colour we happen to be in," O'Neal said.
"I'm sure they'll make a decision on that pretty soon. I know what we'd all prefer but if that doesn't go our way, we'll do what we have to do."
Gun defender Nick Vlastuin wasn't concerned when he spoke to Channel Seven on Sunday.
"I don't mind either way. So long as we get to play," Vlastuin said.

Reckon its a show of good faith and curry some good favour to get Cotch off - not that it helps with the MRP being a separate body (sort of).
Adelaide finished top so they get the preference. Its a small concession considering we're playing it on the 'G.
I'm not really fussed anyway.
-
Just wear the clash sash.
And if we win, switch to traditional ones for dais etc...

Richmond supporters will get to see their beloved Tigers in their traditional guernsey on Saturday - but only on the cover of the AFL Record.
The Record has skipper Trent Cotchin, Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin and Alex Rance emblazoned in the predominantly black guernsey with the yellow sash.
Three Crows – skipper Taylor Walker, Rory Sloane and Eddie Betts – share the cover, each in the Crows' traditional guernsey of red, navy and yellow horizontal stripes, which they will wear on Saturday.
The image on the cover suggests that the clash would not have been too great.

Beat me to it, I picked a copy with my tickets today and first thing I did was laugh. There is no clash.
It is all for TV and how their "product" looks and the research they have put into how to get the maximum from their product.
Everything about our season says a big stuff you to the corporation and the haters, it makes me want to win even more just so they can jam it all up their arses.
-
I have a mate who reckons that the clash could easily be resolved by replacing our yellow sash with a red one.
No prizes for guessing which team he follows :lol
-
stuffing horrified :banghead
There is no clash really, but come the end of the day, I don't think too many people including me are going to give a poo about the jumper colour if we win.
After it's said and done, why bitch about, ya can't change it, so embrace what we need to, and that's the win if we get there :gotigers

Yellow is far from golden for 2017 Tigers
afl.com.au
28 September 2017
GIVEN that Richmond's famous theme song speaks – indeed, shouts – about 'yellow and black', why all the angst about the Tigers being directed to play in their predominately yellow 'clash' strip in the Grand Final?
Well, perhaps superstitious Tiger fans, praying for the end of 37 years of premiership torment, have had a wary eye towards the team's defensive performances in the alternative guernsey in 2017.
While the Tigers have won two of four games in the jumper, they have conceded an average of nearly five more goals against them compared to their matches in the club's other guernseys, including the Dreamtime at the 'G special edition.
After Richmond's stirring preliminary final victory on Saturday, the AFL announced that the side would be made to wear its predominantly yellow clash guernsey.
The decision was met with outrage from many fans, including 403-game club great Kevin Bartlett, who expressed his anger on Twitter.
"Richmond should and must tell the AFL to get stuffed and it will not wear its clash jumper against Adelaide. The club must not roll over," he tweeted.
Most of the outrage was directed at the AFL's reluctance to embrace tradition in the side's first Grand Final since 1982, but the team's performances in the alternative jumper have not been particularly convincing either.
The team's two biggest losses this year occurred in the yellow jumper they will sport in Saturday's Grand Final, one of them the round six thrashing at the hands of Saturday’s rival Adelaide.
The Crows thumped Richmond by 76 points on that occasion, while the Tigers' next biggest loss was to St Kilda by 67 points in round 16.
This year Richmond has averaged nearly identical points for, but conceded 27 more points against, when forced to play in the yellow with black sash.
And it must be noted that the team was able to perform well in the strip on two occasions, first in its win over Port Adelaide in round 15 before destroying Fremantle by 104 points in round 22.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick is not concerned about the jumper change, highlighting after his side's win last week that his players would not be deterred by the alteration.
"We would play in a hessian bag to be perfectly honest," Hardwick said.

R15: Port Adelaide v Richmond at the Adelaide Oval, Richmond 11.10 (76) d Port Adelaide 8.15 (63)
R16: St Kilda v Richmond at Etihad Stadium, St Kilda 21.12 (138) d Richmond 10.11 (71)

Why are we bagging the AFL re our clash jumper?
Our Hierarchy chose this jumper and submitted it to the AFL.
We could have submitted a far more Richmond design but we are stuck with this poor excuse for a clash jumper.

True, but the clash jumper also had to meet certain requirements (i.e. not be predominantly black) so that severely limited our choices. Personally I don't even mind it as a clash jumper
-
My problem is that I can't see an actual clash!

After winning the flag in it, our supporter base is definitely now in love with our clash jumper.

Club has missed out on $200K because of a jumper stuff up.
Players were meant to change jumpers at half time but only 2 did - Jack and Jacob. The one jumper was supposed to be auctioned and the other kept by the player. Without the change the players keep their jumper and the club cannot auction off the other.
What a waste....

Probably had their mind on other things, like winning flags.

i'll take winning the premiership over 200K any day of the week, no waste in my eyes

At half time they would have realized that they had a big winning chance. They would have been prowling the change room itching to get back out there.
Last thing they would be thinking of would have been fund raising.

Not blaming the players. There should have been someone given the duty to hand the players a fresh jumper at half time.
Two hundred thousand is still a lot of money.

You've misunderstood
The Name a Game season Subscription is all games in full
So it is very cheap; $500 = 25 games at around $20 bucks a game
It isn't sold by the club it is sold by "Name a Game" through Sport Delivered. YOu can go on there and buy any game from the last 40-50 years. Individual games are sold for about $35 each
Has nothing to do with the RFC = not sold through the club
I have no idea if there will some sort season highlight DVD

Im assuming we’ll get our own 2017 version of these, but I will prefer holding out for a bluray version rather than that ghetto standard definition stuff

There is also this. I haven’t bought it yet but it looks to have the alternative calls and it’s also bluray

still a lot to some of us WP. I perhaps went too hard early on club merchandise.
might wait around for a JB or a blu ray version as dwaino said.
is that name a game in high def by any chance?

yep the majority of the name a game DVDs are in HD
Out of this season's games I've only come across one that is in standard definition
All the others when the go in the DVD player are playing as HD
