Match preview: Greater Western Sydney v Richmond

Where and when: Giants Stadium, Saturday April 6, 4.35pm AEDT

Last time they met: Giants Stadium, round 17, 2018: Giants 11.13 (79) defeated Richmond 10.17 (77)

The home side grabbed a crucial win after holding off the inaccurate Tigers in the final term. Richmond got within a kick with a minute to play but GWS won the centre clearance and controlled the footy until the siren went. Lachie Whitfield starred with 35 possessions at half-back for the Giants, but co-captain Callan Ward took the three Brownlow medal votes for his 32 touches and 10 clearances.

What it means for GWS: After their opening-round rout of Essendon, the Giants let themselves down last week against West Coast,  and must stand up against quality opposition to show where they're really at.

What it means for Richmond: The Tigers must rebound from last week's poor showing against the Pies with Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt missing, and it's a massive chance for the them to silence any doubters of the flag credentials.

How GWS wins: Jeremy Cameron and Harry Himmelberg will enjoy a Rance-free weekend, and the tall targets will be a handful for the Tigers if the Giants can get them enough quality ball.

How Richmond wins:
Star Tigers Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Dion Prestia and Kane Lambert had a quiet night against Collingwood and rarely play two bad games in a row. Expect a response.

The stat:
In last year's clash at Giants Stadium, Richmond small forward Jason Castagna couldn't buy a goal, and finished with 0.5 for the match in the two-point defeat.

The match-up: Phil Davis v Tom Lynch

The GWS co-captain, ranked 120th in the Official AFL Player Ratings, has always performed well on the former Sun (190th) and with Riewoldt gone and Lynch the main target, Davis will be primed to cut him out of the game. If he gets enough help up the ground, Davis could make it a tough clash for the big Tiger.

It’s a big week for:
Toby Nankervis

The Richmond ruckman is likely to run head on into a fired up and fresh Shane Mumford, who returns from suspension, and the rampaging Giant is coming off the long run. The battle between the two big men for midfield supremacy will be intriguing.

Big call:
With the Tigers backline depleted and missing leadership, GWS will take the chance to put 20 goals on the visitors, with Cameron and Himmelberg contributing half of them.

Prediction: GWS by 36 points

GWS not taking hurt Tigers lightly in AFL

Adrian Warren
ESPN
5 April 2019

The ins and outs surely favour them but GWS aren't convinced Richmond will be theirs for the taking at home on Saturday.

The Giants welcome back classy midfielder Josh Kelly from injury and ruckman Shane Mumford from retirement and suspension, and will hand ex-Docker Tommy Sheridan his club debut.

Although former Tiger Brett Deledio is the only addition to their AFL injury list, Richmond will meanwhile be without a number of key players at Giants Stadium.

It's an unfamiliar position for a club who have had a charmed run the past couple of years while GWS have suffered crippling injury tolls.

For the first time since 2009 bookends Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance will both be missing, Bachar Houli and Shaun Grigg are injured and Dylan Grimes is suspended.

Wingman Sheridan, who played 81 games for Fremantle before being delisted, stressed the Giants weren't being lulled into complacency by the Tigers' woes.

"Not really because it's a team sport. Who brings the heat on Saturday will get the chocolates," he said.

"There are some big name outs but we don't really waver with our preparation, we're going to go out there and give it a good old crack."

Richmond promoted young talls Ryan Garthwaite and Noah Balta and have handed a senior debut to exciting forward Sydney Stack.

The Tigers have focused on improving their defence after a poor showing in last week's loss to Collingwood.

"I maintain that if we still come out and play to our strengths, our defensive part of our game, we will be OK," assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said.

'We've done that for a couple of years now and been OK, so we just have to bring that intent."

No Rance, no Riewoldt - can the Giants take advantage?

Vince Rugari
The Age
5 April 2019

For the first time in Damien Hardwick's reign as coach, Richmond will line up at Giants Stadium without their two most important players, Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt. The league will be watching to see how Greater Western Sydney take advantage.

The Tigers are 1-1 after two rounds but are about to step into uncharted territory. Rance is out for the rest of the year, having injured his ACL in their season-opening win over Carlton. And on the evidence of last weekend's 44-point defeat to Collingwood, he is irreplaceable.

In that same game, Jack Riewoldt hurt his wrist, sidelining the team's star forward for at least the next four weeks. Losing those two players will put significant strain on a side that appears to be in danger of losing its fearsome aura.

The absence of Rance, it seems, will be felt not just the longest but the hardest. Dual North Melbourne premiership player David King believes the 29-year-old is not just the key to Richmond's defensive system - rather, he is the system.

Giants forward Jeremy Cameron could be forgiven for breathing a huge sigh of relief at the prospect of lining up against the Tigers without the threat of Rance and his superhuman ability to get to almost every contest.

"I guess the way he approaches the footy, he's changed the way backmen think in a lot of ways," Cameron said.

"He reads the ball very quick - just as quick as the forwards. He'll leave his man and try and help others up the ground and turn it over."

Co-captain Phil Davis, a fellow tall defender, agrees. "Of the modern generation, there hasn't been many - if any - better defenders," he said.

"He's half-revolutionised how the backs play now. His ability to play on lots of different players and shut them down, intercept and do all that ... he's phenomenal."

So how do you replace Rance? According to Davis, you can't - but he also disagrees with King's view that things fall apart without him. "Their system remains intact," he said.

"In isolation, any team that loses a player of Alex Rance's capability is going to be worse off, but the one thing I do know about Richmond is they've got a method with how they play. People have always known what Richmond do, but they're just so good at it. The hardest thing is trying to stop it."

With Dylan Grimes suspended and Bachar Houli injured, the Tigers' back six will be further depleted against the Giants, meaning Davis' hypothesis will be put to the ultimate test.

At the other end of the ground, Riewoldt - arguably Richmond's spiritual leader - will also leave a big hole. "It's going to be a bit of a different look," Cameron said.

The bad news for GWS is that hole will be filled by Tom Lynch, another of the AFL's premier spearheads. "Tom probably relies on the contested mark a little bit more than what Jack does ... but when you get to this pointy end of the best forwards in the game, they're pretty good at everything," Davis said. "Last year they played one key forward ... that's the look they had in their premiership year."

The Giants, who welcome back Josh Kelly for his first game of the season and ruckman Shane Mumford for his first since retirement, go into the match as favourites and with a point of their own to prove after a disappointing defeat to premiers West Coast last weekend.

Higgins to Balta to Cotch goes long. Kmac to Graham but the kick is cut off 20 out. Giants clear.

And here's the prob. They go forward far too easily once we lose possession.

We get it back. Graham to Ellis in the middle but it's messy and it's a loose ball. Turnover. This time they goal.

Stack nice composure to Nank. Chip to Lambert. Back to Astbury. Stack to broad to Kmac across the ground. Keeping possession across half-back. We had an overlap but Markov steps over the mark and holds us up. Kick them results in a throw-in.

Not sure what weird arse system of defence we are playing but it doesn't work. Zoning and coralling players aka 2016 and its exposing us every time. When we actually through sheer luck we take 5 passes to go zero metres across the ground.

No movement, transition way too slow and our forward line becomes congested. Even when players have been in the clear going forward there is an obvious reluctance to go through the corridor.

All this exaggerated due to some of the worst skill errors I have seen from us in a number of years.....and BEllis needs to be dropped....forever. Stack showed more courage in his first half of AFL than BEllis has in his whole career.

There are some things you just cannot defend.

Refusing to make a marking contest after kicking iut on the full is one of those.

The difference between the two sides has been their efficiency.

The Giants kicking efficiency was 67 per cent and they converted 50 per cent of shot on goal.

Whilst, Richmond's kicking efficiency was 63 per cent and they converted just 36 per cent of shots.

Graham has been putrid! Worst game I have seen him play.
Bellis has been Bellis- hard to believe anyone can stick up for him.
McIntosh 💩
Astbury a shadow of his past- lost without Rance’s help
Garthwaite a poor mans Astbury.
Cotchin returned to his 2016 form of dinky rushed kicking.
Prestia horribly out of form
Dusty worse than Prestia.

We will lose today.

Stack been great.

Stack good tackle on Daniels. Out to nank at HB. To Higgins on the wing. Further on to markov who chips to Lambert. Goes long to 2-v-2. Quick kick to the goalsquare is gathered by the Giants but Stack cuts it off on 50 and finds Kmac. Hits the post. Another miss   :banghead.

Sheds to prestia. Lands with Cotch. But the Giants gain possession.

We get it back. Butler to Lambert in the centre. To Kmac to Higgins. Around the body kick forward. Lynch and Rioli can't get it. Floss forces a ball-up 20 out. Giants clear.

Free to George for too high. Scramble inside 50. Throw-in. GWS kick is paid deliberate. Garth towards Lynch and it's another F50 throw-in. Cotch to Lynch but his kick is smothered. Point.

We get it back. Butler to Prestia who misses a sitter  :banghead.

Richmond has launched an inside 50 from 3 of their 9 kick-ins, resulting in (2.0.12) from this source.

https://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2019/3/gws-v-rich#basic-stats

3/4 time

Richmond   3.6   5.10   9.14-68
GWS          2.4    8.7   13.10-88

Lynch 4, Rioli 3, Stack, Lambert.

If you can't kick straight then you don't deserve to win. Bad kicking is bad footy.

Our field disposal has been slop again too. Every score of ours isn't pretty and hard won while GWS are getting their goals easily.

We've been able to even up inside 50 numbers (had 5 more that qtr) but our entries are slop compared to theirs.

Possies:
Prestia 24
Lambert 24
Cotch   19
Sheds   17
Kmac   16
Markov 16
Nank    15
Stack    15

Dusty with only 12 disposals.

3 active Tigers didn't touch the ball that qtr. Passengers!

The Tigers had 12 of the last 15 inside 50's, but were only able to gain a 2 goal to 1 advantage in this time. This is largely due to their goal kicking accuracy, which has been 41 per cent through the match.

From snap shots in play, the Giants have converted 7 of 11 opportunities. Whilst, the Tigers have converted 2 of 7 shots on goal.

The Giants have now outscored the Tigers (10.3.63) to (5.6.36) since half-time. This has been due to a combination of their tackling pressure (58 tackles to 45) and their kicking efficiency of 73 per cent.

Kane Lambert has had a team high 17 disposals, 5 score involvements and 3 inside 50's since half time.

The Giants have won 3 of 4 center bounce clearances and lead the inside 50's (10 to 6) for the quarter.

Lachie Whitfield now has 40 possessions (a career high), 8 inside 50's and 9 score involvements.

GWS          2.4    8.7   13.10   19.11-125

Goals: Lynch 4, Rioli 3, Stack, Lambert, Higgins.

The Giants continue to be more efficient in this quarter, launching a goal 36 per cent of inside 50 entries, compared to the Tigers scoring a goal from just 9 per cent of their inside F50.

It was Jeremy Cameron's day today with a career high 16 score involvements, 30 disposals and 7 goals.

Butler
Containa
Graham
Ellis
McIntosh
Markov

And even Martin.

Anybody that says Short is soft has to take a good look at his effort even after getting injured.

We need to grind it out to be 3/3 but changes of players is required.

Stack -  :clapping
Lynch -  :clapping

Markov wasn't bad i thought and should retain his position.

Baker for George and Houli for Ellis...a few others required but need the dust to settle.

And we certainly are and the results aren't good

We have far too many of our good players so badly out of form that they are currently "ordinary" players which makes our ordinary players poor players

And finally we have players that have always been poor aroundthe comtest who are now simply putrid.

Cotchin is kicking at 50% and dusty has lost his mojo.

Our second tier isn’t that good. Our game plan has been worked out.

Players aren’t prepared to work as hard as they’ve been working the last two years.

Maybe easing them into the season went too far the wrong way.

........ but we won a premiership.  :gotigers

Stack goes alright.  Umps are stuffing clowns.  Probably need some good draft picks now they have moved the goal posts on us and changed the rules so much.  I am actually so sick of the changes that I have lost interest, it is just not football anymore, they need to keep their ball scratchers off of the friggen game for five minutes.

I disagree

The fight was there yesterday unlike last week, can’t question effort.

It was our under 10s skill errors and execution that let us down.

Hate to break it you but 5-10 mins in to the final quarter there was no fight

And for a 10 minute period in the 3rd there wasnt much either

I was there at the game and it stood out  :'(

I don’t disagree but I think that was because they knew the game was lost (not that that’s an excuse)

But for most of the game, the pressure and intensity was a huge improvement on last week.

How bad was the commentary yesterday?  Was worse than our performance.  They were very obviously barracking for gws.

Huddos “cop that Astbury” was the most unprofessional mal bit of commentary I’ve heard.

It wasn't commentary as much as it was flat-out barracking for GWS.... :shh

With Finlayson's performance kicking 5 goals (4 career goals before this game) did anyone hark back to the good old days when this used to happen to us all the time.  For example a player horribly out of form turns it on against us ala Ben Graham kicking 5 goals against us after never playing forward in his life!!

I also add in the good old days players out injured used to always come back against us think Mumford & Kelly this week.  Ollie Wines next week for sure likely to kick the sealer against us.

With Cameron being injured, did anyone bother to test it out?
