Tigers' Morton may join Sydney
Michael Gleeson, Emma Quayle
October 17, 2011
RICHMOND forward Mitch Morton could be traded to Sydney today for a very late draft pick in last-minute dealing before the trade week deadline.
The Swans have expressed some interest in the uncontracted goalsneak who came to Richmond from West Coast.

Swans have picks 35, 43 and 61. A late pick could be either 43 or 61. The latter is pretty much handing Morton to the Swans for free.

Dead right, pick 43 or stuff them!!!

We got pick 44 for Rainesy in a stronger draft two years ago who was pretty much in the same boat as Morton is now. Morton cost us pick 35 when we took him off the Eagles.
-
Firesale! I'll take 61.
-
Make Sydney earn it. Shouldn't trade Morton for nothing
-
Cull the duds.
Morton, farmer, Jackson, Browne et al.
-
I'd keep Morton over a late pick. Eff pick 61. Eff the Ducks.

We might as well have delisted him :P. Pick 79 means Morton is a freebie for the Swans.

Exactly, give away

wow...
just wow
ridiculous pathetic trade - may as well delist and let Mitch and sydney sort it out themselves. FFS pick 79 in any draft is about 1 in 10 hit and miss, in this weak draft that everyone used to justify pick37 for maric ::) is like its pick 120.
stuff off
-
If we just delist him doesn't pick 79 become pick 100 and something?
:cheers
-
Reckon we will use that pick or 55 for McCaffer now.

easy now TM. what were you expecting?
Morts was finished at Punt Road.
I think other clubs are pretty aware of his off-field 'issues' and on-field limitations. He is a selfish player without a defensive bone in his body.
Put it this way, I wouldn't want my club drafting him, If i didn't go for Richmond.
This is what he is worth on the market. Its better (albeit marginally) than delisting him, which was inevitable.
-
We only had 3 picks left yeah? What's the chance we're trying to trade out an earlier pick? Oh well. At least we got more than delisting. Still kinda bummed :(
-
Odds are 15 odd picks will get passed on or not utilised or used on rookie upgrades before this pick. We probably won't even use it.
-
the retired ben hudson got traded for a better pick lmao
there better be a reason for this like say mccaffer in otherwise i am just stunned
-
the retired ben hudson got traded for a better pick lmao
Craig Cameron drives a hard bargain :lol

Pathetic

:rollin :rollin
:jump :cutetiger
:woohoo
seems about right to me ;D
-
It's just a glorified delisting dress up as a trade. Pick 79 woopee! ::)
The issue now is how we replace Morton's spot on our list. Presumably we are planning to promote a rookie because pick 79 is unlikely to score us a player better than even Morton to improve our list.
-
Disappointed. It appears we just gave him away without even attempting to bargain.
-
Trade No.9
Will Sierakowski from Hawthorn to North Melbourne for pick 58.
Trade 19
Mitch Morton from Richmond to Sydney for pick 79.
Says it all really, Will is traded for a pick 20 higher than Mitch.
Lowest pick traded is pick 79?
-
I don't see why we couldn't have got a pick upgrade rather than a pointless late pick. Sheesh swapping picks 73 for 61 would've been been better.
LOL SEN have no idea. They were sure if we had salary cap issues ::).

Agree with your "woopee" sentiment MT. For shytes and giggles here are some of the 'better' 79+ picks over the past 10 years (not including Rookie upgrades):
2010 - 90 Ryan Gamble St Kilda, 103 Dean Polo St Kilda
2009 - 91 Matt Maguire Brisbane
2007 - Picks only went to 75
2006 - 79 Jesse White Sydney, 82 Aaron Edwards Nth Melb, 86 David Rodan Port Adelaide
2005 - Picks only went to 76
2004 - Picks only went to 78
2001 - 81 David Johnson Geelong
There were quite a few others but not many new players, almost all were retreads. Couple of wins in that lot but the pickings were generally slim! :pray
-
Useless player for a useless pick

should have made them take Jackson as well!
my first thoughts were strange trade :huh
but if you think about it's probably about his worth.
What is it that stops mitch from being a very good footballer? Between his ears?
...and in the middle of the year he was granted leave of absence to sort his poo out and decide whether he wanted to play league football.
good luck to sydney with him.
-
Before everyone gets too excited, we were going to use our last pick to upgrade a rookie regardless so it would not have mattered if that was pick 40 or pick 120. I think we did particularly well in this trade period.
-
Pick 79 could always be used for shock value - ie. Fevola :whistle.
ps. just putting it out there for a reaction ;D
-
i was thinking about that stripes, but which rookie?
Has contin done enough to get a list spot?
Miller? :rollin Warning warning Meltdown is imminant.

Well lets just say that Miller's name is no longer on the rookie list on the website :whistle

....and it is on the senior list!
...whats that rumbling sound i hear in the distance?
-
Blair Hartley has ruled out Fev - "We have not considered Brendan as a part of our plans. We have not even contemplated it. "
Why did we let Morton go for so little?
Each club is required to make 3 changes to its list, and coming into the final day Mitch was going to be delisted if not traded. Sydney were the only club who showed interest in trading for Mitch and through the dealing with his management Paul Connors we came to an arrangement to trade for pick 79. While we would have liked more, we were happy to accommodate Mitch continuing his career after exploring all opportunities elsewhere.

I understand the reason behind it but I'm still disappointed in the trade.
I think it shows a lack of self respect.
-

Huh? It was that or be delisted! If anything we helped him out in finding another clud where he can get settled into immediately rather than wait a month and wonder where the hell he might end up.

No, I mean lack of self respect from the club.
Why do a trade where one of your players is basically given away, and help your opposition just to be able to put on the Gary Goodbloke hat?
Morton could be the difference between Sydney winning games or not that have a direct impact on our ladder position next year. It could also have an impact on the draft and pre season drafts. Why make things easier for Sydney?
If it was a long serving player a la King from Geelong to St Kilda then you might give them a break but let's face it Morton's legacy to Richmond is squat.
-
T Roo, if Sydney let him play his natural game he may well go nuts, but if they need him to play the team game then I doubt he'll get to far, his defensive side stinks and considering he has had two years to work on it I can't see it happening. Good luck to him either way ;)
-
Happy with that - will free up a PSD spot for any left overs or young talent that earns a spot in the training sessions.
Has to cut Mitch loose and this is fair & equitable to trade him to Pick-a-Parts the best recycling business in town.
-
RFCO's post on BF:
"The Morton trade was a win for both parties. If there are footy gods, we did them right by getting him to his club of choice/the only one that was interested and not putting him through the uncertainty of PSD/ND."

Well he was upgraded during the season. To my knowledge he's just been offered a rookie contract again for next season.
-
Going by what Morton said this morning on SEN he will play as a small/midsized forward at the Swans. Interesting as he wanted and asked to be a midfielder at Punt Rd after playing as a forward.
-
Morton claimed on SEN that he hadn't had a proper full preseason since 2008-9 so he wasn't as fit as he was in his first couple of years at Richmond.

Also sounded pretty up himself on sen.
-
When we are talking baggage it doesn't matter how you get rid of it as long as it goes
-
thats why west coast wanted him gone cos he was so up himself
-
The guy is a dead set effwit. He wouldn't know poo from shoe polish.
-
If pick 79 is a dead pick take a risk.

Morton's career at Tigerland was over as soon as Dimma arrived it seems ....
Tigers cast-off keen to make mark among Blood brothers
Michael Cowley
February 23, 2012.
In 2009, Morton was the Tigers' leading goalkicker with 41 for the season, but in the two years since, it has been a struggle. It coincided with new coach Damien Hardwick joining the club, and Morton says the new coaching staff ''probably had a little bit of a vision for the forward line that didn't really have me in it''.
''That's just footy; that's just life. You've got to roll with the punches and here we are and I've got a great opportunity to be part of a very successful team.

Yep good on you Mitch.....seem to remember you saying something along the the same lines when you left the WCE....
"I want to play more in the centre and Richmond are going to give me that chance, I have been told with Kerr, Judd and Cousins or whoever I wont get achance"
Well Mich you were given plenty of chances at the club in a few roles mate and you couldn't deliver.....
-
Saw him the other day
He's fat

LMAO don't think he ever said anything like that when he came here. They played him as a wingman and he's a forward, so that's where we played him. He was good for two years and pretty poo for two years.
I don't hold anything against him.
-
Neither do I tbh and actually its a win winhe gets a fresh start in a new team and state and we give the opportunity to somone who will fill the role we need
-
Morton says the new coaching staff ''probably had a little bit of a vision for the forward line that didn't really have me in it''.
He wanted unselfish players who stuck to team rules and were two way players.
Yep that's life.
-
Hardwick buggered morton around.
When morton went back to coburg to play in the midfield we heard that the role he was playing in the forward line was redundant and he sent mortan back to learn a midfield role
But we were also told that morton asked to go back to coburg to learn a midfield role?
After finishing 2010 showing lots of promise up the ground, what did dimma do with him at the start of 2011?
played him in that redundant forward role again. From there it was just downhill for mitch.

LYAO all you want, I was in WA when he was going on about why he wanted to leave the Eagles and what he was offered. Centre was included in that offer....whether he played there or not.
I couldnt care less anyway, he wasn't really any good, a few "good" games, thats it really.
-
He played midfield for WC. He played more than 'a few good games'. I know some people refuse to admit it about a player who chooses to leave but he was very handy in 08/09 + his finish to 2010 was good. Seriously, the bloke is meant to be a lazy dud yet he won our goal kicking in 2009 and averaged over two goals in a game in his first two seasons.
Can you produce some quotes please? I remember him saying he just wanted a crack at playing regular footy in the ones. West Coast were a very good side when he was there and he struggled to hold a spot. The bloke is a forward not a centreman. Stevie Wonder can see that poo
-
I always rated his ability, dimma not being able to extract the best from him during his tenure thus far has been a dissapointment for mine, wouldnt surprise at all to see him kick 40+ up there
-

Look I had a lot of time for the guy, thought he could of or should of played better than he did more often, I know he is not a certreman, I didnt say that did I, no sorry don't have the quotes, just what I read and heard in the WA press when I was there and he was being interviewd....
-
Expect him to again "show people what he can do" for a while then get lazy and be back on his arse again in no time looking for yet another home.
-
Expect him to finish top ten in the NEAFL goalkicking
Just

He was really poor last year. I'll be surprised if the 3 club journeyman has much impact.
-
Puddings Morton is the Albino Relton of the footy world.
-
Mind you, if there's one club that can turn gimps into pimps it's the Swans. Good luck to Mitch.
-
It most likely won't be his first year up there that will be a problem (he did fairly well last night) but whether Mitch delivers for the Swannies over 2-3 seasons. Mitch did have one good year for us kicking 40 goals but he turned out to be a one-trick pony. You need versatile players in modern footy.
-
if Morton is a one trick pony then so are plenty of forwards
-
Forwards.....Mark the Ball......Kick the Goal, sounds pretty simple to me :lol :lol
-

about as much sense as youve ever made coach...creative forwards make an impact coz they're , wait for it "creative". Run a line through the steve johnsons of this world and they sure as heck wouldnt be getting a game for their tackling/defensive input. However their ability to make something from nothing is second to none and that alone warrants a spot in the starting line up. I am forever bewildered when rating forwards people by default say, Not much defensively..like that matters...Like saying Black cavier aint much good at trotting..WGAF ::)

Bojangleburg, did you play any footy? just wondering. ;D

would agree, has a limited 'engine" which doesnt give him the chance to play on ball.
hardly a gut running playing.

A guy who now will be remembered as a footy journeyman whose unfulfilled potential was his greatest flaw. If any club can change that perception of a player its The Swannies.
-
Watched a replay of the Swans games today and saw some of the same old bad habits from Mitch. Can't see things changing significantly for him unfortunately.
