2017- we played a cooked Collingwood in the GF in ‘80 but beat the best team ladder wise this year in the GF.
-
They are harder to win in 2017.

Head says 2017
But heart goes with the team that slammed the Pies in the grandfinal, even if they were ''cooked'.

The numbers say that goals were easier to score in 1980, so that would make the 2017 win against the top side a better team performance. But I will always cherish flogging the filth by a record margin while KB ran rings around them! 2017 needs some perspective & some time for things to resolve, in time it may become our greatest ever premiership victory! :gotigers

You would think it was our most unexpected premiership. If that is possible.

First premiership in the AFL era. Has to be more significant.
NB Wasn't alive for 1980.

I won't mention 1967 then.
A side boasting the best ever centre line of Francis Bourke, Billy Barrott and Dick Clay. Not to mention a very young KB kicking 3 goals.

Be interesting to hear from someone who was around for both to compare the unexpectedness of this year with 1967

I wasn't around way back then ;D but I do remember being told once that we weren't far away from being a top side the previous year (1966). We spent all but round 1 in the top 4 and we were sitting on top of the ladder with only 4 rounds to go. However, we lost to the Pies and Cats in successive weeks (both top 4 sides that year) which saw us tumble to 5th. We won our last two matches but, with only a final 4 in those days, we needed St Kilda, Geelong or Essendon to drop a game. They all didn't and we missed the finals by half a game.
So by 1967, with the addition of Royce and St Francis, we became the top side. We won the minor premiership and our percentage of 145 was 20 higher than the next best.
