Martin, Cotchin and co. all chances to line up in Wangaratta

Jeremy Wilson
Wangaratta Chronicle
Friday, February 16, 2018

LOCAL Richmond supporters could be in for a treat next Saturday with reigning Brownlow Medallist Dusty Martin a chance to line-up in the JLT match against Essendon at the Norm Minns Oval.

With the introduction of AFLX forcing the AFL to reduce the JLT pre-season competition to two games, clubs have limited preparations before round one.

That means Martin as well as skipper Trent Cotchin and star duo Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt could take their place against the Bombers.

Richmond general manager of football, Neil Balme, said teams for next week were yet to be selected but didn’t rule out the Tigers loading up with premiership stars.

“Because of the program we have – a bit of AFLX this week – we only have the two JLT matches before the start of the season,” he said.

“So everyone that is wanting to play round one will really want to get a decent run – so we’ll be taking it relatively seriously.

While small forward Daniel Rioli is also sidelined as he recovers from foot surgery [along with Prestia's hammy], the premiers will otherwise be at full strength on Saturday.

Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin will play, alongside captain Trent Cotchin, star forward Jack Riewoldt and All Australian defender Alex Rance, with playing time crucial 30 days out from the season opener.

"We've only got two games … so there'll be no resting blokes just for the fun of it," Balme said.

"It's not going to be easy to pick the team, because there's not many unavailable.

"A few blokes will be disappointed they don't get a game, because it'll be like genuine selection."

Shaun Hampson (back) will be unavailable, while half-back Oleg Markov has not done the necessary contact work to be selected after off-season shoulder surgery.

Prized draftee Jack Higgins is fit and available for selection in the JLT Community Series, but Balme said his selection would depend on whether he was in line to play in round one.

"He's certainly in the chop up to get a run in JLT one, but I reckon he's just on the cusp," Balme said.

Richmond will field a near-full-strength side against a similarly strong Essendon in their opening JLT Community Series match at Wangaratta on Saturday.

The Dons said they were likely to play all three of the recruits they signed during the trade period – Jake Stringer, Devon Smith and Adam Saad.

The dons will do us by about 4 goals - as our biggest strength being pressure and chase will be dialed down.

The Bummers fans will be singing about the result for 18-24 months.

We will finish much higher than them by the end of the year :thumbsup

Essendon sticking to a traditional 3 tall, 3 small forward line whereas we have stuck to our flag winning Jack + smalls one.

As long as we get through with no injuries [touchwood  :pray] that's the most important thing.

Last year we hit the JLT with a different intensity whicn created massive momentum going into the season.

Be interesting to see if we treat the pre season with the same conviction this year .

Very excited to have a look at how Jack Higgins goes.
The passion he has for footy is amazing and his credentials thus far is quite impressive.
The last time I was this excited about a new addition to the Tiger mob was Dusty (as I said a few years ago on here, Dusty will be better than Dangerfield, you all said I was a moron, seems I was right).
Anyway I will get in much earlier and say that if this kids stays at Tigerland he will become and 300+ game Icon.

Time will tell!

As for today, footy's back and I got the sports channel back on foxtel (I don't watch any other sport), got a few bourbon's and ready to watch a slow paced practice match.
:gotigers any win is great win  :gotigers

I know it’s jusr a practice game and the HUN is a Bomber rag but how they had them as a top 4 is a bit rich. Stringer is a perfect fit for a club that drinks their own bath water. I’ll be surprised if they make the 8 this year. None of their signings improve their soft underbelly inside game and with only two preseason games you can’t afford to go in half arsed and expect to turn your form on in round one like it’s a tap. I’m glad we tone our pressure down for the occasion, look ready to hit the ground running.

One area of concern for the Richmond coaching staff will be their offensive one-on-one's, as they have won just 14 per cent of these contests in today's match. Their 2017 average of 29 per cent win rate is where they'd rather be in this category.

Richmond were playing on at every opportunity when they had a mark in the third term. 42 per cent of their marks were played on from in the quarter, which is well above their 2017 season average of 29 per cent, the fifth-lowest play on rate last year.

Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin have both been kept on ice for the final term with the result of the game now beyond doubt. They were both terrific today and look set to continue their strong form from 2017 into this season.

Forward half kicking efficiency is continuing to be the deciding factor in this match. Essendon are going at just 30 per cent by foot, compared to the Tigers who are kicking at 86 per cent efficiency in the third quarter.

Pre-game pics:

Looks like there will be a full house in Wangaratta.
AFL reporting 11,000 which was the limit.
Was told it was a sellout.
Probably about 60-70% Richmond judging on merchandise and baracking.

People very interested in membership.
I spruiked the country membership to about half a dozen people and they all seemed interested.
Good deal. 5 home games. Take out the TV and away games and it fits perfectly.
Should be what the club concentrates on with reserved seating all sold.

Walked past the Richmond merch stand on the way out and they had brochures for membership as well as "Yallow and Black" book, videos, autograph books etc.
Grabbed a country one for a woman and her family there and of course she was more interested in that rather than the full membership.

Chol's only problem has always been staying in the game.
Maybe he's one of those guys that needs a Sheedy-type teammate to come in and give him a whack in the ear early in the game to get him fired up.

Chol belongs in the ruck, looks so much better there...still a long way to go though...main concern is that at  the start of his third year, his tank is atill as poor as when he first arrived, the number of times he slowed to a walk while everyone else was still running ther arses off stood out like dog's bollocks..though he'd often spring to life when we took possesion and ball started going forward....so maybe it's not all about his tank.... :whistle  :shh

Other main obserations....

Grimes seems to have gone up another level....

Butler & Castagna's ball handling and finishing still a worry....they're probably both lucky Lloyd is slow, selfish and defensively unnacountable and Short is now seen as a back (who also doesn't defend)

Anyone who thinks Higgins is ready to play round one is kidding themselves.....Bolton surely must play....

Garthwaite looks the goods...

Short looks dangerous with the ball but is still defensively poor.....IMO it's a toss up between him & Garthwaite covering for Broad....

Townsend didn't completely suck when he was in the midfield....would be a huge bonus if he could at least get to a seviceable level and provide that extra rotation....

Probably my imagination but Caddy appeared to be a yard quicker...more likely Essendon were just slow....

Martin still a class above everyone going at half pace....

Cotchin played like it's still the finals...looks possessed....if that's just a pre-season effort then look out..... :shh

Goddard is cooked....

I thought Garthwaite showed a fair bit and I'd like to see him come in for Broad. I am no great judge, but I have this gut feel about him that he will be a player who rises to AFL football standard given the chance. A bit like what Grimes has done.

Yep enjoyed his game.

Huge task once Nank went off but krpt competing and presenting. Something he didn't do wnough of last year in the VFL.

Also, impressed with Ellis C, solid game

Interesting it was reported as a sellout
A local told me that definitely wasn’t the case
Plenty of room around the ground
Especially at the North end

I was announced on TV on fri. that it was a sellout so I didn't go. I will be filthy if that was not the case.

I don't see it, maybe I've fallen into the trap of he is useless and need a real big effort to prove me otherwise?
He is obviously in the picture as he played, I just don't like it :huh

Definitely not a sell out

Been up there before

Yesterday's crowd the smallest I've seen. Penty of room. Biggest issue was the heat and humidty, shocking

Actually they were selling tickets at the gate

Gotta love our forward pressure :thumbsup.

Richmond were relentless registering 47 tackles, six of which were inside forward 50.

Tiger forwards Jack Graham (eight tackles), Corey Ellis (six), Josh Caddy (five) and Jason Castagna (three) led the team while all four players hit the scoreboard.

Yep, I agree with these in particular. Surely Bolton starts getting a game over the other two. All three rotating in and out with the person out being the one who isn't performing (at AFL or VFL level)... until Bolton develops a little bit more and gets a more permanent spot. Granted with no Rioli it wouldn't surprise me to see all three in at once.

And I noticed Caddy looked a little lighter on his feet :shh
