AFTER it looked like the season was over for Richmond in round 14 after four straight losses, the Tiger Army is up and about again following five consecutive wins. They are now two games off eighth position and remain a mathematical chance of playing finals, although there isn't much room for error with three other teams also vying to enter the eight. The Bombers have only lost once in the past month – to the Sydney Swans on Friday night – and are seventh on 10 wins, with percentage keeping them above Collingwood and Gold Coast.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Friday August 8, 7.50pm
LAST FIVE TIMES
R11, 2014, Essendon 15.14 (104) d Richmond 7.12 (54) at MCG
R23, 2013, Richmond 15.14 (104) d Essendon 9.11 (65) at MCG
R9, 2013, Essendon 13.13 (91) d Richmond 9.8 (62) at MCG
R22, 2012, Richmond 13.24 (102) d Essendon 8.9 (57) at MCG
R8, 2012, Essendon 19.14 (128) d Richmond 15.19 (109) at MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. The Essendon midfield proved the difference last time the sides met. While Jobe Watson won't be there this time, David Zaharakis, Brendon Goddard and Brent Stanton were all significant in round 11.
2. The Bombers' May win could see a strange pattern continue. They haven't recorded consecutive victories over Richmond since 2008.
3. Since round 15, the Tigers are one of two undefeated sides - Geelong being the other – and have risen from 16th to 12th.
4. The Tigers are on their longest winning streak in 14 years. The last time they won five in a row was in early 2000 and they haven't won six straight since the opening six weeks of 1995.
5. Alex Rance, fresh from beating Jonathon Patton, sits at a career-high 96th in the Official AFL Player Ratings, brought to you by Gatorade.
6. Essendon's Ben Howlett kicked a career-high haul of five goals last time the sides met.
Prediction: Essendon by 12 points.

I love the smell of burnt Tigeritis in the evening.....,
Yeah its like lavender in the morning only harsher and more pungent.
Another well promoted defeat coming up.
-
Don't give a stuff whether we can make finals or not.
What I do give a stuff about is sticking it up the team we
couldn't produce even a whimper against back in May.
5 wins in a row means nothing unless we rectify the vomit
we threw up at the dreamtime game.
Stick it up these arrogant flogs and you'll gain some respect back
from at least one tiger supporter.
-
We need to see some more biff from our players. It's actually been refreshing to see some angst and retaliation. Let's not get pushed around anymore!
If there's any other players wanting to let out some pented up frustration this week is a great week to do it.
I want to see some Scotty Turner action this Friday night.

The Tigers have rekindled their finals aspirations with a five-game winning run, and Mark Thompson outlined his perceived reasons behind their improvement.
“They’re playing a lot better than than they were at the start of the season that’s for sure. They’re moving the footy a lot quicker, playing better footy because they actually decided they were out of the finals but now they decided to get back in.”

Look at the teams, look at the form and look at what's on the line.
In all honesty we should absolutely wipe their arses on the MCG, we should win by 10 goals +....
Will we... :-\

We will win the midfield battle but lose the war at the bookends. Grimes will be horribly exposed by Danihers mobility and height and Griffiths will fail to fire and let the ball rebound far too easily out of defense like both did in the earlier game this year. These are our weak links imo unless they can change something drastically.
I would actually play Griffiths in the center bounces early against rider and have Maric play CHF then swap them as the game moves around the ground. I think Griffiths is a good match in terms of leap and athleticism for Ryder. Last game we were beaten early by Ryder out of the middle and the game was done in the first five minutes. Hampson played this game and was brought into the team for just such a match but failed miserably - surprize, surprize.
Watson killed us last time so his omission will help but Goddard, Zaharakis, Howlett and Stanton will all be playing and had fantastic games against us on the night. Fletcher was also, surprisingly, active that night but I think that spoke as much to the way we were bombing the ball in as to his form for the game.
We lost the contested battle last game but with Miles and Maric in the side we will be much more competitive around stoppages. Because we couldn't find space we just keep bombing the ball out which played right into their hands.
Expect a tight, rolling maul-type game early as Essendon try and shut down our time and space and force turn-overs. I think we have a good mix in tonight though to worry the Bombers.
Expect a much closer game but I think it may be a bit rich to say we should win by 10+ goals :shh :gotigers

Seriously with the team the druggies are fielding we should win this by 30-50 points. We are only missing Jackson, Reese and Conca from our best 22.
We will lose

Grimes shouldn't be playing on Daniher as it is. Carlisle and Daniher should be manned up by Rance and Chaplin
-
Dont necessarily t just ink we will win the midfield, Miles no longer goes under the radar so him and Cotch will be marked men. My worry is that beyond these two we will struggle to gain quality clearances. Really need the second tier midfielders to lift their game. Good opportunity for Titch and Vlaustin to get more of the ball, Thomas also should see a bit of it however Bombers hierarchy would consider his ball use as non damaging.
-
Hibberd's run will be sorely missed by them. Looking at matchups we really have a shot at doing a number on them - but question is will we be up for it mentally? ::)

-
Ok well. any last thoughts?
We're all doomed....
:lol
-
Geez their players have some lavender haircuts.
-
Grigger looks pumped....
-
Daniher has even more zits. His whole head will burst on impact.
-
Nice one.
-
Miles with a friar tuck hair cut.
-
Who's the friar tuck? Oh wait
-
Now that was too easy.
-
Essendon are so well drilled at moving the ball forward and applying pressure.
-
Mark?
-
Not Dooks
-
Nothing bloody changed, quick kick rubbish........ Kills us every time. :banghead
-
Centre clearances an issue
-
Put Dusty forward, he is getting a tag so he won't get a kick in the mid field.
-
Bit one sided from the maggots
-
Essendon are playing us. So are the umps just quietly
Frees 5 to 1
-
About time
-
Carlisle got a hand to that. Should have been a mark.
-
Geez Geez >:(
-
Too easy from defence, take Jack out of the play put Dusty down there!
-
GoRdon is useless.
Deletion 3 possessions. Miles 11
-
They killing us on the r50
-
We need to win more contested possession.
Too soft at the minute.
Our forward 50 entries are woeful
-
Free kicks 7 to 1
-
Been a while since Carlisle has had a kick so I hope they give him one first thing 2nd quarter. Poor bloke is wearing shorts about 3 sizes too small.
-
Miles on target for 36 kicks, 20 handballs, 12 marks :clapping
-
Need to find a way to goal, let's see if Hardwick actually changes anything or just lets things roll.
Probably broke even in most areas that quarter, just inefficient.
-
We seem to be the only team that gets called for illegal holding/blocking in marking contests. Griff got a big towering mark taken off him for the softest"block" by maric, yet last week our players were continually held by gws players way before the ball entered the drop zone. very frustrating
need to lift, giving the bombers way too much space on the rebound. and we've got to take the game on and break the lines, atm playing too safe and making it easy for their defence
-
Been a while since Carlisle has had a kick so I hope they give him one first thing 2nd quarter. Poor bloke is wearing shorts about 3 sizes too small.
He got one hand within about 3 metres of a contest late in the first, surely needs a square up....
-
Um, I reckon I've seen Gordon put in two very sub standard efforts overhead.Josh Hunt like efforts.
-
I'm not sure Ellis is getting that tag as mentioned in the lead up to the game.
The Bombres playing a keg above what we've been used to in the past month.
While we are not out of it, we would need to lift significantly in the 2ns qtr to avoid being blown away (again)
-
Playing ok, but nothing happening for us up forward.
-
I missed it, Gordons looked ok to me
-
First goal massive.
-
Um, I reckon I've seen Gordon put in two very sub standard efforts overhead.Josh Hunt like efforts.
Exactly. If it doesn't improve should never play another game for us again
-

I can't believe that was missed by the umps. Deplorable and I expect a square up straight away.
-
Any chance petard can kick longer than high?
-
Ellis :cheers
-
8 point turn around thank to butcher Houli
-
Is big Benny wearing mascara?
-
Ben griffiths playing really well...
-
I'm convinced we play the game in Slow Motion.
The battery is flat in the remote, Dimma is fuct....
-
Batchelor been crunching a few blokes the last couple games.
-
Geez Cotchin just got raped.
-
Batchelor been crunching a few blokes the last couple games.
Yep
-
Geez these umps are raping us
-
Lmao feck off scum
-
We have some seriously dumb footballers......
-
Why Tigershark, exactly how was that a free kick?
-
Frees 12 to 4
-
I want to introduce a new rule, every umpire should be made to play at least one game of football, on national t.v. on afFriday night.
-
That ball was in Carlisle's vicinity. Should have been his kick.
-
Lmao wtf are you reviewing?! It went through the middle ones.
-
Goal check Jeezuz they don't want to give us anything
-
Nice one :clapping
-
Aaaand here comes the even-up
-
Just review everything you gimps
-
Who was that girl who ran onto the ground who smothered marics kick?
-
Gordon needs a rocket up his anus or early sub off
-
What a stuffing flog Jakey Carlisle is
-
Sucked in carlisle
-
What a stuffing flog Jakey Carlisle is
He thinks he is important
-
Hahahahaha
-
Rance a nice under cloaked biff :lol
-

-
Thomas is just so slow and t not just his foot speed....his reaction time....
-
Tears cheats. Tears.
-
Carlisle is a massive girl.
-
That free kick was there you stuffing cheating, injecting pieces of scum
-
God I hate this scum football side and there mutherfucking gimp supporters. Smash these idiots

Carlisle's boot is injured :'(
-
Houli makes too many panic mistakes
-
We have been lucky they haven't kicked straight......
-
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my
-
muthafucker!
-
Well win, lose or draw - tonight we cannot say that we are playing a "bottom 4 team"
-
I feel sick.
-
I'd also like to acknowledge the game of Brandon Ellis.
I hope he finishes strongly in the last qtr because he's been good in a big game which is a credit to the young man
-
Every time we've taken advantage, we've stuffed it right up.
-
They have given it everything, but games not over - all the way tiges!
-
Feels like we have room for improvement while Essendon are at full. Hope we go up a gear.
-
Gooooooordoooooooooo!
-
I'm getting wet. Please don't blue ball me again Richmond.
-
stuff you're poo Morris
-
Morris just cost us the game
-
Sometimes you gotta just throw blue balls to the wind
-
Surely we'll find a way to lose this ?
-
Great game. But I'm having trouble watching.
-
Bombers playing high risk up the guts. Hope it doesn't kill us.
-
Hey, free kicks 21 to to 7 in our favour since 1/4 time
-
Amazing balls !!!!!!
-
Yaaaaaawwwwwwwwww!
-
Great work there. Reply in 10 seconds. :banghead
-
Feeling sick :banghead feels like we're losing this one.

no doubt. I was all over him early this season I'll admit but have said it for weeks now, since the geelong game he's turned it around and been consistently solid. Tonight he turned it on when we needed someone to step up

I've never been a huge fan of him myself but just accept he's the kind of player will look a million bucks in a top 4 side. Will never be able to rely on him to win a game but once the grunt work is done he has the kind of skills to shred an opposition.
-
In a game where we had a lot of contributors, I think Thomas, Foley, Newman and to a lesser degree Morris, struggled tonight.
Thought Ellis and Miles were incredible.
Lids is having a lot of impact off HF with less disposals - it just works leave him there.
Cotch looks a lot better with Miles helping out.
Martin is a star but would hope to get a bit more than we did from him.
Edwards and Maric were matchwinners in the final qtr.
Pettard was very solid(pitching wedge passes aside)
Houli's run was really important tonight
Jack lifted bigtime in the final qtr
Griff took some big grabs and gave us a chop out at crucial times, but was out on his feet towards the end, hope we hold onto him, solid.
Rance :clapping
-
Brownlow.
-
Newman was average but Thomas did well early before he was subbed off to give us more run. i agree with you tony about Miles and Ellis - awesome! Edwards and Jack are our X-Factor. They didn't get a huge amount of the ball but when they did they make something happen. Lids was great early and Maric wore Ryder down. Batch and Gordan looked all at sea at times. Newman's almost cooked.
If we could add a fit Jackson to the mix next week and Conca the week after our midfield starts to really strengthen up. :thumbsup

WOOOOOOOOH! Roid RAge over that one EssenJunksters. Next year they might just opt for the fake silicon muscle implants, I hear they are legal. Nothing like an edge of the seat final quarter heartbreaker.

Respect where it's due - we stuck it up the bummers good and proper
Loved Benny griff tonight. His massive kick is such an asset. I'm
not sure if hardwick knows it and uses it sparingly as a tactic, or whether
he just doesn't see value in a the long bomb.
Ellis turned it up a notch - thought his kick outs were great.
Expected him to fade away after a big first half but he persisted well
Maric back to his beast-like form.
As I said - don't care about finals, just love giving my 20 odd bomber supporter mates a good old fashioned rev after the tripe we served up last time.
-
Wow. Excellent win. :cheers
What a great effort from the boys.
I think after quarter time the boys showed they wanted to win this.
First to the footy, contested possession went up and the tackling pressure was unrelenting
Shane Edwards has stood up in a crunch game against some quality opposition.
Big Benny Griffiths was imposing himself and taking them on.
It was a high speed game and i thought all the boys contributed really well with some tough footy. :thumbsup
:gotigers

Great win Tonite........happiest I have been all year.......we must continue to have faith in griff Gordon, and the other young blokes coming thru like McDonnough , MBean, Arnott......play these blokes ease please please please.........seriously Griff is 2x the player Vickery is if he gets the opportunities that Vickery has been gifted.....

Stuff yes Tiges.

Excellent win last night. Just finished seeing the replay on Fox. Essendon play nice footy but our players were better in the clutch moments. It will all come down to the last round IMHO.
-
Easily the best win this season. Footy was fun again tonight.

Always great to beat that arrogant mob of Veruca Salts and send them home with their tails between their legs :thumbsup.
We were fortunate to be only two goals down at quarter time. Not because they were any good but we just continually stuffed ourselves up committing bad turnovers (the umps did their best to help out the Bombers as well ::)). Credit though to the boys for fighting and hanging in there and turning the game around in the second. Cotch was lucky to get that free but it made up for the BS ones Essendon had got. We then had our weekly post-half-time siesta :banghead for the first 10-15 mins of the 3rd qtr but thankfully a kind bounce on their goal-line kept us only a goal down at the most. Gordon's courage and goal proved to be a turning point and we regained our intensity and composure and regained the lead (stiff not to be further ahead if only the siren sounded 5 seconds later). Good to then see us stand up in the last and fend off the couple of late charges the Bombers made.
We still make too many goal-costing dumb turnovers just at the point where another goal to us would either have given us a handy break or have sealed the game earlier (hello Morris but he wasn't the only one).
We also still have significant periods during games where we lose a string of centre clearances in a row. The game's momentum really swung back and forth on which side was winning the clearances.
As for Heppell - Did Dimma apply a tag as I didn't see one.
-
That chain of handball off our half back line late in the last quarter which led to a goal by Shed was pulsating. It won us the game.
8 weeks ago and that would've resulted in a turn over goal to them and killed our momentum.
Last night doesn't make us what we ain't - a top 4 side - but a desire to win and competitiveness are the hallmarks of a great side and I've been really pleased in our good wins over the past 6 weeks at our intensity at the pill and our hard edge in close.
Can we fit Big Ben, Big Ty and Big Ivvy in the one side?
-
This was a very good win, I thought we were shot and out of puff in the last with about 10 to go...
Boys need to keep going now.

Allowed myself to enjoy it for a bit. It meant something but the frustration of this season has kicked in again ;D

I don't think we can tbh - too top heavy. I think playing Reiwoldt with one of them(I prefer Griff personally) and Deledio perma 3rd tall with cameos from Dusty and Petterd makes us more potent.
I think Griff is the better CHF and all round prospect bc he gets on his bike and offers a chop out up the ground when we're coming out of defence and need a get out of jail bomb it long target. He had Hurley on him last night and if he wasn't marking it, he never allowed Hurley to take a cheap uncontested grab. That's his prototype game, he develops into one of those CHF's and we are on the right track.

Well said TM.

So stoked, absolutely love beating essendrug.

Big Ben was friggen awesome. I noticed he keeps his feet where others go to ground ie. TV. His kicking is just magic.

Don't agree with that MT - in play it seemed a bit suss but when they showed the replay it was a certain free imho.

Back to what he showed in the first few games this season. His ruck work has improved (as has Vickery's) and I reckon that makes a big difference to us, not losing ground when big Eeevarn has a spell.
-
Absolutely, not knocking TV either, I think he has improved a lot too. Just love BG with the ball, feel confident he is gonna tonk it deep to our advantage or through the tooth picks. He took some nice marks too.

Richo on 3aw :- "It was a sign of maturity and in the last few years Richmond might have lost that game. I think Richmond are going as well as last year."

Robbo talking about Richmond in his 'The Tackle' column today ....
It’s always the question when a team — and Richmond is the same — produces football many expected to be its trademark and not its exclamation mark.
People with masters degrees in football mentality might be able tell us if it is pressure of expectation. But right now, Eagles and Tigers fans are not overly caring.
They are seeing ultra-competitive and ultra-attacking teams, and finals positions are not beyond them.
Both teams can’t make it, probably neither team will make it, but they get to decide that. This week, the Eagles have the Dons (eighth) and the Tigers play the Crows (seventh), and they are four points behind both teams.
And what of the Tigers?
That’s six in a row and all the qualities we were looking for at the start of the year are materialising. Resilience and toughness comes to mind and it’s why coach Damien Hardwick played the happy fan after the game.
They stood up when challenged and then ran away with the game.
It gave the players and coach confidence in the direction and substance of the team. And there was a nod of appreciation from Jack Riewoldt for his skipper Trent Cotchin in the wash-up.
“We’ve developed a bit of steely resolve and I suppose all of the credit, or most of the credit has got to go to the captain,” Riewoldt said.
“He’s the one who has stood up and grabbed the group by the scruff of the neck, along with Ivan (Maric) and the rest of the leadership group, and said, ‘Boys we are not copping this and this is where we need to get better’.”

lol at richo, it really goes to show that those who have played the game are just as much over the shop as supporters.
not long ago richo rightly came out and said theres plenty hard decisions need to be made and we need to cut plenty of players.
all of a sudden a few wins against lower/ middling sides and out of form sides p/a and richo thinks all is well.
its this all over the shop attiyude that has stuffed us. he was right we need make some hard decisions and if hes an example of what is going on those decisions wont be made.
