Title: Tiges v Brisbane
Post by: Moi on August 08, 2006, 07:44:26 PM
Voss is hinting this might be his last year, and with concern over his knee, I'm gathering every game he plays from now on will be like his last and the rest of his team to act accordingly.
Big game for the Tiges this week.

Talk up here is that he might not play Sat night.

Another player i wish had played for the Tiges - shame not to see him play another
If this is his last year and doesn't play on Saturday, of course.

Greatest midfielder of the modern era IMO. Voss has done it all and he probably doesn't care but he should have had a Norm Smith medal to go with his Brownlow and 3 flags too.

The Lions still have some good youngsters coming through like Sherman,Selwood, Moody, Roe and Hooper and they've been competitive all year so even with their massive injury list it's still a 50/50 game. Razor will need to keep Bradshaw quiet.
Title: We're overwhelming favourites this week

Round 19 previews
10 August 2006   Herald-Sun
John Salvado (AAP)

RICHMOND V BRISBANE LIONS at Telstra Dome 7.10pm

Head to head: Richmond 15, Brisbane 15

Last time: Richmond 14.12 (96) bt Brisbane 11.16 (82) R4 2006 Gabba

TABSportsbet: Richmond $1.60, Brisbane Lions $2.25
Centrebet: Richmond $1.58, Brisbane Lions $2.40

Richmond has slipped out of the finals race with four straight losses to teams who are set to figure in the September action. But - woefully inaccurate goalkicking aside - there were some promising signs in last week's loss to the Western Bulldogs, including the form of youngsters Richard Tambling and Cam Howat. Brisbane's Melbourne-based fans may well miss a last chance to say goodbye to skipper Michael Voss, who is ruled out with a knee injury he says was exacerbated by playing at Telstra Dome.

Key: Richmond ruck-forward Troy Simmonds has rarely lowered his colours in a stellar season that could well be rewarded with All Australian selection. He will be raring to go after serving a one-match suspension.

Tip: Richmond by 25 points.

Probably 10 or more years since a weaker Brisbane team took the field..

I know we aren't exactly world beaters and have injury problems of our own but we really should win this game..

Would be as nearly as disappointing as the Hawthorn game if we lost this..

If we play like last week even with the mistakes we'll win. If we're flat like the three before we'll get done.

As long as we don't get anymore injuries  :help.

David King on 3aw

* New lawn at the Dome in the middle. Turf on the outside.

* No changes.

* First time in a month going into the game against a similar opponent so a big chance for a win.

* Try to expose the shorter Brisbane defence. We're a taller side tonight. Go tall at stages but they have to mark the ball otherwise that's useless.

* Richo getting back to his usual self after the wrist injury. Wrist not giving him much trouble as a couple of weeks ago. We'll see Richo do that big arcs back into 50 as we saw 4-5 years ago.

* Hall (not first choice FB by any means) and Joel will be our key defenders. Joel will need to sacrifice his game a bit for the team but he can still get the ball a bit. Try to also contain Luke Power.

80 points up at half-time. How good is this! PERCENTAGE!  :gotigers. The Big fella has 5  :bow. They all have their confidence up so we're kicking straight.

Howat has no right foot but he's been very clean on his preferred left. White hasn't done badly either.

After looking small in the body againast the top sides we look so much bigger and stronger tonight. Simmo is a freaking giant.

The Dome turf is a disgrace btw.

There goes my early draft pick...straight down the dunny ;D Doesnt matter it was a sensational first half performance, average second half. Mr Tambling is just about ready to say "I have arrived gentlemen" ;D

Brett Deledio great run, doesnt have confidence to take his shots on the run, shoot kid, if you miss bad luck but take a shot- hes almost on the verge of becoming a 2 to 3 goal a game midfielder- he could have should have done it tonight.

Andrew Raines, Dean Polo all the boys were terrific.

But we do need players and we still need atleast 1 very early draft pick. Now we'll have to trade to get it which may be impossible.

Awesome first half with our hard running through the lines and direct footy. Didn't go on with it in the second which was the only disappointing thing from tonight. Terry tried the guys in different possies in the last half but it would have good if we had gone on to win by over 100 points top get one back.

Paddy brought his own footy and did great doing Joel's role while Joel sacrificed himself on Bradshaw.
Richo was on song and too big and strong. Always the way when he kicks an early goal.
Simmo has to be AA.
Lids was freed up across half-back and starred. Most of our kids were good - Rainesy, Howat, Polo, Foley, Patto in the ruck and White. Tambo had impact.
Sugar blanketed Black. Terry just said Johnno had the flu midweek too.

Looks like we'll finish 10th which means our first draft pick with by 7th.

Talk about 2 extremes tonight.

Everyone was lining up for touch and running in numbers. A lot of positives from the first half

I must say i was also extremely disapointed in our second half. Sure it was great to win, but we should have won by a min of 120 pts tonight. Brisbane had nothing and were a rabble and we SHOULD have burried them. Most of the team got lazy in the second half and no one wanted to work hard.

To me this wasnt good enough.

Maybe i am being too hard, but good teams dont stop.

Just back from the game. My first game all year, what a night to go!!

I was also disappointed in the second half, I wanted a 150 point win with only 1 Brisbane goal.

Petts went quiet after halftime, he was everywhere in the first half, same with Krak.

Good to hand out a hiding anyway, we owe a few teams some.

we would have won by 100plus if terry did not experiment in teh last quarter and kept sugar on black. black created alot of drive 4 the lions after sugar win teh last quarter

but im not upset, its not easy to keep all the momentum going through 4 quarters

what really bugged me was everyone saying the lions were very young and undermanned!!!!

WHAT A CROCK OF POO!  THEY STILL HAD 8 PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS TO OUR 1!!!!

what we say was tiger cubs  thumped 8 premiership players with some lion cubs.

geez we are just as young and injured as they are

just happy to get a win but still maintain as i have all year that finishing the season off strongly MUST be our main priority. MUST!!! MUST!!! MUST!!! be our main priority.

If we come out on top over the next 3 weeks it'll be a fantastic result, finals or not.

I played a game on AFL 2006 last night against Brissy...admittedly it was on easy level, but I won by 183 points, 195-12...Browny kicked 15 :scream. The game actually mirrored ours up until half time...scores were 100 to 9. I just went on with it in the second half...although still disappointed to miss the 200 point mark. :rollin

It's been like that all year. If you lose to Richmond then there must have been some excuse for it rather than giving credit to the Tiges for being the better side ::). We won't get respect till we play finals regularly.

The Lions have been devastated by injury more than any other side but that doesn't excuse Michael being totally disinterested, Voss pulling out despite being fit to play and most of the rest not getting anywhere near our intensity. Injuries are only an excuse if you try your best.

The boys on "On the Couch" breifing talked about the Tiges at the end of the show.

Wallsy mentioned that we are travelling well and are well positioned in our 5 year plan.

Talked about Patty Bowden and how he is probably recruit of the year. They think he looks more comfortable in defence.

Dundee slices up AFL
15 August 2006   Herald-Sun
Damien Barrett

MICK Dundee or Matthew Richardson?

Melbourne TV viewers made a resoundingly clear choice on Saturday night when Paul Hogan's 20-year-old flick Crocodile Dundee outrated the Richmond-Brisbane Lions clash at Telstra Dome.

Even Mary Poppins, a timeless family feel-good movie, gave the AFL a run for its money.

The AFL ratings for the first half of the season were similar to records set last year. But Saturday night's clash underlined the need for in-form teams to be scheduled in prime-time slots.

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said ratings for the Tigers-Lions game were understandable.

"Saturday night's game, particularly with where the teams were positioned on the ladder at this time of year, probably did not carry as great an interest as it would have earlier in the year," Demetriou said.

Richmond belted the Lions by 82 points in a match that had no bearing on the final eight.

Crocodile Dundee, on Channel 9, was at least the 12th free-to-air broadcast of the movie, made famous by Dundee saying to a New York mugger: "That's not a knife, mate. Now, that's a knife."

It sure put the knife into the AFL, averaging 320,000 viewers against footy's 287,000.

Even the sequel, Crocodile Dundee 2, topped the AFL between 9.30-10.30.

Mary Poppins, on Channel 7, rated solidly throughout the evening (234,000 average) while The Bill, on ABC TV, topped the footy in the 8.30-9.30 slot.

It was worse for the AFL in Brisbane where an average of 70,000 sets tuned in, just 10,000 more than SBS.

Yes the papers up here focused more on Brisbane than Richmond.
