Beware the wounded Tiger? Four questions ahead of Kangaroos v Richmond
By Dan Woods
North Media
10 February 2022
Should the Kangaroos beware the wounded Tiger?
Richmond lost Hannah Burchell (knee) and Laura McClelland (ankle) in last week's loss to the Bulldogs, adding to a mounting injury list that already features key players Harriet Cordner (knee) and Courtney Wakefield (shoulder).
That would appear to leave the Tigers up against it on Saturday, but their performances so far this season against quality opposition suggest this could be a banana peel match for the Roos.
After demolishing St Kilda in Round 1, two of Richmond’s most convincing performances have come against Melbourne and Fremantle, both of whom currently hold spots in the top three. With scores of 38 against the Demons and 44 against the Dockers, they registered the two largest losing scores by any team so far this season.
While the Tigers may sit 1-4, they will be no easy beats for North.
Will the Roos revive their goalkicking radar?
While the Kangaroos looked comfortable for large parts of the game against Fremantle last week, their struggles in front of goal kept the Dockers in the game for far longer than they should have been.
Eight consecutive behinds followed the Kangaroos' opening goal in blustery conditions in Hobart, continuing to a run of inaccurate returns in front of the sticks. The Kangaroos have kicked 24 goals and 37 behinds this season at an average of 0.65 goals kicked per point, lower than the league average of 0.77.
The Roos might be able to take some inspiration from the Tigers, who are at the opposite end of the spectrum for goalkicking accuracy. Despite kicking just 1.7 in last week’s loss to the Western Bulldogs, they’ve kicked 29.19 for the season, at an average of 1.53 goals per behind.
Who do the Tigers tag?
Ash Riddell has been putting together an exceptional season in 2022. As of the mid-point of the season she currently sits tied for first place in the race to be named AFLCA Champion Player of the Year.
While Riddell has been the player to stand up most frequently for North’s midfield this season, Mia King is putting together the best season of her young career, and Jenna Bruton’s move back inside off the wing has brought the best out of her this campaign.
Those performances, coupled with Jas Garner’s return to her brilliant best against the Dockers provides Richmond with a match-up headache, and the question of how to contain all the Kangaroos’ midfield threats.
Can the Tigers rediscover their forward firepower?
Richmond have scored a whopping 193 points in their five matches - the fourth most of any team in AFLW this season, and 12 more points than the Kangaroos.
However, the Tigers haven’t won a game since their 10-goal haul against St Kilda in the opening round of the season, and they’ve scored fewer points in each of the last three weeks than the previous week. They scored just 13 points last week, kicking just one goal against the Western Bulldogs.
While their offensive output may have slid since the opening two weeks of the season, the evidence is there to show that Richmond is more than capable of blowing teams away in attack. It’s up to the Kangaroos’ defence to figure out how to keep the Tigers quiet.

The game is being shown on 7mate.
26 degrees with a slight breeze to the left of screen end.
It's about to start.
-
We're kicking into the breeze.
Conti out the middle and then Conti gathers across HF and nails a lace out pace to Brennan 30 out. Misses left. Didn't come back with the breeze.
1 - 0
-
Our lack of tall marking targets going forward just hurts us. Any long kick to an aerial contest is turned over.
Scores still level but we can't get it out of our defensive half. We're just holding on thanks to Miller at full-back.
1 - 1
-
Once again we cough up a soft goal in the last minute of a quarter :banghead.
1 - 8
-
Quarter time
Richmond 0.1-1
North Melb. 1.2-8
The positive is it could have been so much worse as North wasted the breeze with all the play in their forward half.

The breeze is across the ground but favouring the end we are now kicking to in the 2nd qtr.
-
Stupid by Sarah Hosking . Brennan had marked it on 50 and then was given 50. Hosking then pushes over a North player to give away a free. She in turn got pushed over so that was reversed but we lost the 50 so we lost a certain goal :banghead.
-
Good play by us via Lavey. Seymour marks in the pocket but misses the set shot to the right (she didn't account for the breeze).
2 - 8
-
Makur Chuot on the run from 40 but misses.
3 - 8
-
Good forward pressure creates the turnover. Yassir goals :gotigers.
Rich 1.3-9
North 1.2-8
-
Slack play from our mids. Left our HB line empty with free North players and North get a goal as a result.
9 - 14
-
Again slack! No pressure whatsoever. Gifted another easy goal to North into the breeze :banghead.
9 - 20
-
Half-time
Richmond 0.1 1.3-9
North Melb. 1.2 3.2-20
Goal: Yassir.
A quarter ruined by two minutes of being asleep defensively as a team. Once again the goals conceded come late in the quarter. What should have been a lead at half-time is a 11-point deficit through our own dumb slack play :scream.

We have the first couple of inside 50s. Brennan interfered with in contest and earns the free from 25 out. Goal! :gotigers

Geez we have dumb players :facepalm.
Soft goal to North. Again late in a quarter (less than 3 mins to go).
15 - 28
-
North free 20 out. Another goal to them.
15 - 34
Repeat of the 2nd qtr. We do really well to keep them goal-less for most of the quarter and then gift them two quick goals late :banghead.
-
Clueless

3/4 time
Richmond 0.1 1.3 2.3-15
North Melb. 1.2 3.2 5.5-35
Goal: Yassir, Brennan.
Our better players (Brennan, Conti, McKenzie, Miller) are actually having good games but we just don't have the depth. No Wakefield and AWOL small forwards (aside from first yearer Yassir) means we can't keep the ball in our forward half and score.
-
Stats to 3/4 time:
We've had just 12 inside 50s.
Miller 16
Conti 15
Seymour 14
D'Arcy 13

Half our girls arent footy smart. Handballing amongst themselves in our defensive zone, 20 metres out from goal, taking wrong options all the time. Theyre clueless.
-
Hosking locked in the pocket snaps and misses.
16 - 34

Rushed point off hands.
17 - 35

Sadly true.
-
Conti should have nailed that on the run.
18 - 35
-
And that is why the stand rule is idiotic. Ump blew the whistle for play on but because Yassir was quicker to react than slow ump to call play on she got punished with a 50 :facepalm.
-
Lost by 19.
Failed to kick a goal with the breeze that qtr despite a heap of inside 50s :facepalm.

Final Score
Richmond 0.1 1.3 2.3 2.6-18
North Melb. 1.2 3.2 5.5 5.7-37
Goal: Yassir, Brennan.
Don't see us winning another game for the season. I feel sorry for our top 6 players trying to carry our bottom players who are U10s standard :P.
-
Theyve really dropped away after winning that game a few weeks back. I felt theyd improved but they havent. Conti, Brennan and 3 or 4 others are good enough the rest should go home and learn how to make tzatziki.

Said it before will say it again
We cannot afford to not have our best players on the park week after, week. Our depth or in this case lack of depth shines like a beacon.
Having our 2 key bookends out (Cordner / Wakefield) has cost us big time. Birchell is a big out as she is in our best 22.
So disappointing

NORTH Melbourne has entrenched itself inside the top-six on Saturday afternoon, putting away a dogged – but depleted – Richmond outfit by 19 points at the Swinburne Centre.
Despite missing a handful of key players due to injury, the Tigers stayed with the Kangaroos for most of the first three quarters, before Darren Crocker's team put the foot down in the closing stages of the third quarter and kept it down in the final term to seal the 5.7 (37) to 2.6 (18) victory.
The Kangaroos have now peeled off four consecutive wins to put them two games inside the top-six, with four rounds to play in the home and away season and can almost start planning for finals.
Richmond stayed with North Melbourne for much of the encounter, before conceding two crucial goals in the closing minutes of the third quarter after Sophie Abbatangelo danced around some Tigers to put the Roos two goals in front.
Minutes later Daria Bannister stretched the margin even further after punishing Richmond for a sloppy holding free kick in front of goal.
The final 15 minutes was an arm wrestle between two sides in different states of evolution. North Melbourne looks capable of beating the very best in the competition, while Richmond was kept in the contest by dual All-Australian Monique Conti who never stopped finding the ball in transition, dancing around opponents and putting the ball inside 50.
Richmond has struggled to find a great distribution of contribution this season, with Conti stacking up dazzling displays. This wasn’t the case on Saturday. Katie Brennan took plenty of marks. Rebecca Miller and Ellie McKenzie was busy. And Emelia Yassir was always lurking in dangerous places.
Star midfielder Ash Riddell continued her brilliant season to date, amassing massive numbers again to finish with 29 disposals and 20 kicks, while Jasmine Garner acquired 26 touches and 12 contested possessions and Emma Kearney found the ball on 21 occasions.
While Ryan Ferguson's side haven't been able to transform decent quarters into four points in 2022, the Tigers have been dealt a nightmare injury run, losing Harriet Cordner and Hannah Burchell to ACL tears, along with Laura McLelland to a season-ending syndesmosis injury, plus Courtney Wakefield who could miss the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder.
The medical department inside Punt Road has been working overtime in the past month, but may not be required beyond another month if Richmond can't reignite a season that has only produced one win.
GOAL STREAK CONTINUES FOR STAR TIGER
It wasn't pretty, but it doesn’t matter as long it goes through the big sticks. Katie Brennan wobbled a set shot through for a major at the start of the second half to keep her record streak alive. The star spearhead has now kicked at least one goal in each of her past 12 games.
SHADES OF BIG BROTHER
Her brother has won two premierships in the famous yellow and black guernsey and is one of the best key forwards in the AFL at his peak, but Beth Lynch showed that marking ability runs in the genes. Facing her old side, Lynch took a couple of marks that would have her All-Australian brother, Tom Lynch, beaming with pride.
BALL-MAGNET ROO ON FIRE
Ash Riddell started the season by equalling the disposal record with 35 touches in round one and hasn’t looked back since. The 25-year-old has been on a tear, adding another big day on Saturday to take her season average to 28 disposals, 18 kicks and 10 handballs across the first six rounds.
SAY WHAT
Roos coach Darren Crocker:
"I don't mind our football being a little bit understated with the way we're going about it. That's OK if we're sneaking under the radar of some people externally. We know what we need to keep doing internally. Let's just keep letting our footy do the talking for us to a certain extent."
Tigers coach Ryan Ferguson:
"Couldn't be prouder. Sitting up there watching them fight for every ball, their intensity, their ability to take it up to a really good team, there was so much to like about it. Obviously there were some aspects and some growth areas in our game that we need to get better at. There were some frustrating moments but I thought the effort was unbelievable."
WHAT'S NEXT?
Richmond heads across to Western Australia next weekend to face West Coast, while North Melbourne travels south to host Collingwood in Hobart.

Summary:
* Today was interesting. Couldn't be prouder. Sitting up there watching them fight for every ball, their intensity, their ability to take it up to a really good team, there was so much to like about it. Obviously there were some aspects and some growth areas in our game that we need to get better (inability to keep it inside our F50). There were some frustrating moments where we lacked polish or finish to give us reward effort and but I thought the effort was unbelievable. Generated some opportunities but just didn't finish.
* Each week we aim to get better on the track. Aim to be more advanced in our game knowledge and understanding of our method and each other. Past two weeks gone to another level in that regard. It's showing on the park. Haven't yet got the Ws but we've just got to keep fighting to get that win.
* We wouldn't have been able to handle this many injuries last year and still remain competitive. Girls handling it really well and staying upbeat. You would've seen that today.
* Miller and D'Arcy held up really well in defence. We were able to limit the effectiveness of North going into our D50.
* Brennan - Not enough words to describe how good she is for our group. How she leads off the park at training and especially on-field.
* Conti - got the workrate and run in the legs from the work done in preseason. Knows she can outrun opponents over the course of a game.
* Yassir - some of her efforts today were wonderful. Outnumbered and fighting against taller opponents for the team. Her determination and investment in the team is worth noting.
* We travel well as a team. Great to get away next week (vs Eagles) and build on our experience.

Stahl needs to join Reid and Molan wherever they have gone to
Chout has absolutely no football smarts and shouldn’t be in the top side

Agree - our top up players are better performed than these players. Add Dargan to that list also
-
They are trying to hard to act and play like the mens team. I’d encourage them to step away from their shadow and establish their own identity

I think some of our forwards just aren’t good enough and don’t pressure enough
I agree with completely with Stahl and Jacques could be added to that list also the way they’ve been non contributors week in week out.
And the more I see of Kelly Im not sure she’s in for any other reason it gives Seymour time to help the defence it’s probably a toss up on who’s more clueless Kelly or Makur Chuot.
-
On a positive side I liked D’arcy’s game in defence. She held up pretty well and took some great grabs even though she did drop one sitter but she was solid. Miller did really well considering the ball was coming in there every minute at one stage.
Seymour was excellent all game as was Conti but that goes without saying.
Hosking twins were pretty good all game. I like their aggression.
McKenzie is just starting to warm up. I’m expecting a breakout game very soon.
It’s unfortunate we are losing but it’s hard to win without our key players injured and we are still 2 genuine mids short compared to the better teams.
Unfortunately Reid may not have been the pick we thought she was going to be.

I think Reid will make it, she has good size and has the skills but has found the transition up from juniors hard especially in terms of physical aggression.

Physical aggression is the one thing you can't teach. You either have it or you don't. If you don't have it u need elite pace. She doesn't have either
