He'd be a great addition but hardly the "big fish" we're all hoping to land.

Would rather a kid called Jake "Billy" Barrett WP. Townsend not really doing much in the NEAFL but "Billy" is tearing it up there.

Gee the way its looking GWS wont have a team next year if all the reports are true

Richmond has reportedly set it's sights on snaring young GWS mid-fielder Jacob Townsend in the trade period which begins on Monday.
The Tigers appear to have missed out on Adam Treloar and Harley Bennell but are still a big chance to land Carlton's Chris Yarran.
"The Tigers are having a very significant crack at a young GWS boy by the name of Jacob Townsend, another one of these giants that seems to be expendable," Andy Maher has told SEN.
The 22-year-old has played 28 games for the Giants since making his debut in 2012, but managed only one game this season which saw him collect 22 possessions in the club's final match against Melbourne.

He's a beaut - instant replacement for Maric right there . Nephew of Essendon and Hawthorn great Paul Samon .

What the hell is he? 22 years old, been at GWS for 3 years and played one game this year.. :facepalm
Cant get a game at GWS and yet we are apparently a top 4 side and we are looking at this kid... :facepalm :facepalm

Agree but is is hard to tell, so much talent up there you list don't know.
He's a good size and we may have a position other than an inside mid in mind.
As long as he's better than anyone currently in our botom 6 the I don't care

He's not a big fish but think of it like this:
We'd probably get him for absolute peanuts, our 4th or 5th pick. He's probably far more likely than anything we'd grab at that spot in the draft this year.
Hard as nails, had a very solid '14. Admittedly isn't much chop, but was rated higher than Miles (they came from the same NSW academy), so ya never know :shh

Agree, if he comes cheap say our 3rd round pick which for memory is in the late 40's but could end up early 50's then it's a punt worth taking
-
did play last game of year and get 22 touches probably put his currency up a bit... Tomilson the one from GWS id take as a backman .
Must remember how hard it is for blokes to get a game in GWS when they have about 40 kids trying for 15 spots miles struggled know look at him they all need the chance go and get him tigers

Exactly! I think the point with this kid is that he has plenty of potential, has proven he can play at the top level and we'd pick him up for absolute peanuts. Instead of being the 40th bloke in line for development he'd get Choco's ear whenever he needs. I would have absolutely no quams in snaring this guys, the risk v reward and its really a no brainer.

Would be a pretty shrewd pick up by the Tigers , built like a Sherman tank , is a ball magnet , avg 22p a game this year. He s a yes for me :shh, get him amongst some AA quality and watch him thrive :clapping

#31. Jacob Townsend

DOB: 20-06-1993
Height: 186 cm

Drafted: 2011 NSW-ACT zone selection (GWS GIANTS)

2015 1
Career 4
2015 stats:
GWS vs Melbourne R23 - 22 disposals; 10 kicks; 12 handballs; 3 marks; 6 tackles; 4 free against; 1 goal)
Career stats: http://finalsiren.com/PlayerStats.asp?PlayerID=2208&SeasonID=ALL#ind
Summary
Riverina recruit Jacob Townsend made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2012 and played 11 games for the GIANTS in his first AFL season. Originally from Leeton, Townsend joined the GIANTS under the club’s zoning concessions and has been part of the club since its inauguration in 2010. Townsend was awarded the Coaches Award at the 2012 Kevin Sheedy Medal for his fearless attack on the footy.
2012 Preview:
A hard-nosed utility, Townsend is another latecomer to Australian Football who has a background in rugby union. Hailing from Leeton in southern NSW, he was another player selected in the AIS-AFL Academy and has a bright future.
2013 Preview:
Townsend made a tidy start to his AFL career, featuring in eight games over the first 10 weeks of the season. One of the club's better tacklers, a broken jaw interrupted his promising year before a groin injury ended it. But it was still another step forward for the former rugby union junior, who showed ability at both ends of the ground.
2014 Preview:
The tough youngster appeared in 11 games last season, adding to the 11 from his rookie campaign, as he continued his AFL development. A latecomer to the sport after playing rugby union as a junior in NSW, a calf issue interrupted his year before it was brought to a close by hip surgery.
2015 Preview:
A tough, hard-working midfielder, Townsend made further strides in 2014. Usually given a tagging role, he is a ferocious tackler, and averaged 7.5 a game in his eight senior appearances. Is still learning how to win his own ball to have a greater impact on games, but remains on track to become the hard nut most teams crave.

Averaged 22 p a game...WTF. That was the one game he played, the only game, the last game against the Dees...

I would take him if he's cheap, purely because of his physique and tackling ability. Same with that Brandt fella from WCE. Good size.
We need blokes to replace Tuck/Jackson, which we haven't done at all. Only thing close we've had is Thomas, and IMO he would have been far more serviceable than Griffiths and Conca in the EF.
Happy to get good players or pick up potential role-players for cheap. Doing something is better than nothing and if the draft is shallow this year all the better...
-
Another I've never heard of FMD you dudes
-
If he can tackle and they stick, then he is worth looking at because we are the worst tackling side in the AFL

Miles......
Thought that when posting the message but not the same really. At 22 he would have shown something by now.
You realise Miles was close to 22 when we got him. He hadnt done a real lot outside of the odd good game of afl up until then.
The only reason we got Miles was because he could not dislodge one of the freakin hundreds of first round mids that GWS HAD. It is no different with Townsend.
I have mentioned this kid on several threads and he is worth going after, ffs it is worth at the least giviing him a go.
How many big hard at it ferocious tacklers do you see on our list, even if he fails he is a type we need to go after. What makes this even better is if he works out we get a decent player for przctically nothing and if he fails we have at the least tried do something towards correcting a hole in the list at little cost..
The last time i looked there were no big hard at it mids up for trade and certainly no big fish who want to come to us.
You know what maybe we should just do away with the draft and any sort of trades unless there is a big fish involved. eff ME DEAD.
Just one question have you even seen this kid play or how about even seen a highlkight reel, do you even know what role he plays.
edited to correct quote, hope I got it right
-
look...
that all makes heaps of sense, but....
he is not the big fish.
as such he does not satisfy the messiah complex.
nothing else matters
-
Hmmm... a big bodied inside mid who tackles a lot but doesn't get it much and has average disposal....well I hope we land him, as I'm looking forward to his two senior games a year in the forward pocket....

It certainly seems that way with some.
Im wrapt we are looking at this kid. He not only has talent but he fills a list need. I couldnt care less if he ultimately fails b i think that will happen he will offer a bit.

Richmond shows interest in GWS midfielder Jacob Townsend
MICHAEL WARNER
Herald Sun
October 09, 2015 8:00PM
“We have always liked Jacob and have been tracking him for a couple of years and we feel he is a big-bodied, tough mid that we think can help us. He certainly fills a need," Tigers football boss Dan Richardson said on Friday.
“He’s obviously not a big name but we are more about needs than names. We’ve had some positive discussions.”
Townsend is out of contract and likely to cost the Tigers a third-round pick at next month’s draft.

I know nothing about this kid but is he just another Nathan Gordon type?
To be totally honest from the little bit I have read about him, I think he is.
No real weapon by the sound of it. Tackling isn't even close to enough at this level.
"Big bodied mid" at 186cm he isn't big. Take a look at Cripps, Barlow, Mundy, Fyfe......
We need guys that are going to push players like Grigg, Houli, Chaplin, Hunt out of the side. Not players that might be simular to these types.
I'd rather take an unknown kid in the draft that potentially may become an upgrade of those "recycled" players I mention. They have all played a roll but it's time to upgrade everyone of them....and some.
-
he wont upgrade on all of them, but maybe 9 or 10 of them?

Townsend is a gun. Watched him play quite a few games in the NEAFL this year. Averaged over 20 disposals and in his only game for the Giants this year, racked up 22.
He is a tough midfielder and a very capable tagger. Doesn't take any crap and ALWAYS goes hard at the footy. Would be a great pickup. Like Miles, has been starved of opportunities due to the Giants having so many high quality mids.

Plodder!
Pies get Treloar and Aish we get this guy. FMFD we are hopeless

if we get him on the cheap then sure get him into the side. But why are we going for these 'tough big bodied' types? we have a few of these types in the team already. what we need is a classy speedster that kicks goals. I thought the lack of firepower we have when lids goes down would mean we would need another classy goalkicker
-

Absolutely agree. We have one of the biggest bodied players in the AFL in Thomas and we hardly played him. What's with the club? When Thomas played he actually played well and got the pill. I'm not a fan of his, but if the club really felt we were deficient in that area, surely they would have played him in the final ahead of Conca or Griffiths, or at least played him a lot more!
This reeks of pushing the panic button as a result of one game - the elimination final. We lost that game because Maric got mauled and none of our stars turned up to play. The only guy with any outside run at all that day was McIntosh. I doubt a guy who cannot get a game with the GWS would have made the difference, as good an inside player as he might be.
-

Townsend 186/89
Cripps 193/90
Barlow 189/91
Mundy 192/89
Fyfe 190/85
He's a touch shorter than that bunch, but a very similar weight. So he's probably the same size or bigger if there's any difference due to being shorter.
We need blokes who will tackle and take the inside pressure off Cotchin. Have never seen anybody on our list tackle a bloke like Townsend did on Ryan Griffin. So if he's cheap he's worth a crack. Could be a hidden gem like Miles...

Who are these 'few' in the team already? Arnot - never really played inside mid. Thomas never really played but should have been. That's it?

Thomas is listed at 186/87. Smaller than Townsend. And by your own admission we should have played him in the EF - a sentiment I have also echoed recently.
Just remember Miles didn't get many games at GWS at all and he was IMHO the only bloke who really stood up in the EF. McIntosh tried too. If Townsend comes cheap and has the potential to be the next Miles why shouldn't we have a crack? God knows we need big bodies in the midfield. Look at the North mids - they smashed us due to their size. Higgins, Ziebell, Swallow, Cunnington etc. Bigger/tougher men.
-
who cares what his height is, if he can assist us in being a contender then his a good recruit.

Well I'm a 14 year member, drove to Adelaide last year, and went in 2013. I was at the game this year too, were you?
Perhaps I should have been clearer - I am talking about the midfield specifically. Rance was solid as usual. Jack played very well and tried very hard. Grimes put his body on the line but didn't have a huge impact. Martin are you serious? Was prominent early but faded and was basically ineffectual by the end of the game. Had a mammoth 21 touches and 62 fantasy points - 40 of which he had by quarter time? So you tell me who has memory issues if you think he stood up you're crazy.
We got smashed in the middle of the ground by Goldstein and the North mids. Miles stood up - nobody else really did...

Chuck, pay a bloodytention... :banghead

Sorry mate but ive been a member for x years, I drove really far etc. adds nothing to your argument
Miles is a star but that doesn't mean every gws plodder nobody will be too
-
yeah chucky. surely you have reading this forum long enough to know that what people say isnt what they mean?
-
Martin got the ball ten times in the first quarter
Gained 500 meters, far more than any other Richmond player, almost equal Harvey
Richmond fans hve very high expectations of our stars. And allow the limp goats liberties
-
^ Then a further 11 disposals in the last 3 quarters.
Just making a point - yes I watch and go to the games. Martin didn't stand up.
And I'm talking about our midfield here, which is clear if people are following the discussion.

it really only became clear after you specified the midfield

Pull your head out. Clearly a midfield discussion...

see the difference?
i think, deep down, you can

Sorry my bad I didn't have my cap of clear intention understanding on
-
Just remember Miles didn't get many games at GWS at all and he was IMHO the only bloke who really stood up in the EF.
Did you watch the game or do you have memory issues or just a pessimist set of glasses. Miles and McIntosh only ? What about Riewoldt, Rance, Martin, Grimes.
Yes you should have been clearer, thank you for acknowledging that.
Now that your argument is concise I agree with what you said Miles was the only midfielder who consistently stood up.
PS congratulations on your 14 year membership, it adds considerable significant weight to your arguments
-
How long until young Jacob knocks us back for a better offer?
:facepalm
-
and he was IMHO the only bloke who really stood up in the EF
and he was IMHO the only midfielder who really stood up in the EF
see the difference?
i think, deep down, you can
Perhaps I should have been clearer
And yet it did not take much of a leap to clearly see he was talking about mids.
-
ok then
-
I know nothing about this kid but is he just another Nathan Gordon type?
We also need players who will compliment the likes of Cotchin and Miles. You wanty to keep going with Thomas and do absolutely nothing to upgrade on him great.
Not sure why you would want to compare (a big bodied hard at it INSIDE mid who really can tackle, you would know that if you had seen him,) with Grigg, Houli, Chaplin, and ffs Hunt.
Mate 186cm makes him a tallish medium sized player, at 89 kg combined with a height of 186cm that makes him bloody big bodied.
At pick 50 odd in what is being touted as one of the weakest drafts in recent memory he is more than worth us looking at him. You really aren't saying you would rather take a punt on a kid are you. Akid who will probably take 2 or 3 yrs just to bulk up ad another two years to iron out the weaknesses.

if we get him on the cheap then sure get him into the side. But why are we going for these 'tough big bodied' types? we have a few of these types in the team already. what we need is a classy speedster that kicks goals. I thought the lack of firepower we have when lids goes down would mean we would need another classy goalkicker
Who are these 'few' in the team already? Arnot - never really played inside mid. Thomas never really played but should have been. That's it?
sorry for late reply, weekend beekeeping. My point is that we have Thomas and Arnot in the sidelines. If a big bodied type is needed why not develop Arnot say 2 years ago? Or play Thomas more regularly? Or use Martin as a battering ram like the early part of his career. I don't think the tigers are too bad at the stoppages. but Geez sometimes I think our spread and run is beyond average.
I am not against picking this guy up on the cheap but I think the club really needs to look for fast/classy mids who can push forward to compliment Riewoldt, Lids, and Lennon.

Although I agree with you, it's a bit of a chicken and egg argument. Did the fact that we were being killed on the inside in the elimination final lead to lack of run on the outside? There's no doubt we did get beaten in both areas. This is common for us (and for others). That is to say we really drop off in the run and spread area when we get beaten on the inside.
-
Why not play as Arnot inside mid bit forward?

Yep....we delisted Arnot...and now we're chasing another Arnot.....

SEN just said that although Townsend is a delisted free agent, he'll be traded by GWS to Richmond for a late pick. Likely done today.

We delisted Arnot because he was total shyte. Geez the love for the dud is amazing. You probably haven't even seen Townsend play yet he is already tried judged and executed.
Having seen a little of both, Townsend is a far better prospect than Arnot ever has been or will be.
Seems you would rather hang onto known Hacks and not try anything new.

AFL.com.au understands the Tigers will send a later-round selection to the Giants, but that pick will be determined by a potential swap of picks between the Tigers and the Blues in the Yarran deal.

they got 700 first round draft picks
they are only allowed to play 21 per game

A deal to send Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Townsend to Punt Rd for a third or fourth-round pick is expected to be sealed tomorrow.
Townsend, 22, has played just 28 games in four seasons at the Giants but was targeted by the Tigers for his ferocious tackling and inside grunt.

Ready to welcome the kid. Hope he's another Miles!
So does the Club ...
Richmond, likewise, expects a deal for young Greater Western Sydney inside midfielder Jacob Townsend is not far away, with the Tigers preparing to hand over one of their later picks.
“I know people out there who would probably be asking who’s Jacob Townsend. I think he’s probably a player like Anthony Miles,” Richardson said.
“We’ve been watching GWS clearly quite closely over the last few years – not only their AFL team, but also their NEAFL team.
“Look, we’ve made no secrets that we think a big-bodied, strong, powerful midfielder, with a bit of aggression, is somebody that ticks a real need for us.
“Sometimes out there, supporters, for sure, would say we want a bigger name than Jacob Townsend. But we tend to recruit more on need than name.
“We think that Jacob will provide the sort of midfield grunt that we need a little bit more of – in particular, to support the likes of Cotchin and these guys around the footy.”

that Townsend will be a welcome addition to our inside midfield brigade.

As I said before, watched this kid play live a fair bit over the past 4 years. Has shown constant improvement. He is as tough as Miles but taller with more pace. Was swallowed up by high draft picks constantly coming into the club. When you have Ward, Treloar, Shiel, Greene, Griffin & Coniglio in front of you, its pretty hard to crack the 1's. Miles as we know was also a victim of this.
Had a foot injury which kept him out footy for the first half of 2015 but he got straight back into it in the NEAFL and became a tackling machine. I have no doubt he would be a regular starter for us in 2016 if we land him.

Especially if we can pick him up for doughnuts. 4th rounder for this kid and we're laughing all the way to the draft.

I'm warming to this guy now, must play round 1 though. Will also push Morris out of the team which makes me satisfied that this is a good deal.

Townsend a Tiger
richmondfc.com.au
16 October 2015 12:44 PM
Richmond has secured a trade for young Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Townsend, on a two-year contract.
The Tigers have swapped their fourth round selection (currently pick 70) in the 2015 National Draft, for Townsend and the Giants’ seventh round selection.
Townsend, a strongly-built (186cm, 89kg), tough, inside midfielder, played 28 games in four years with the GWS.

Townsend highlights: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-10-16/townsend-highlights
Townsend is a strongly-built (186cm, 89kg), tough, inside midfielder, played 28 games in four years with the GWS.
The Tigers and Giants met on Friday at AFL House to finalise the trade, which has gone through for the current pick No.70.
Richmond also receives the Giants' pick No.120 as part of the deal.
He joins the Tigers on a two-year contract.
“A big-bodied midfielder is something we consider is a real need for us,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football,” Dan Richardson.
“We think that Jacob will provide the sort of midfield grunt that we need some more of, and he will provide good support in the midfield.
“We’ve been watching GWS clearly quite closely over the last few years – not only their AFL team, but also their NEAFL team.
“We recruited Anthony Miles from the Giants a couple of years ago, and we are confident Jacob will make the same sort of impact Anthony has had over the last two seasons.”

Probably be used to promote Lambert to the senior list.

Not convinced on his skill level/decision making with the ball, but definitely tackles well based off that footage.

Get to know: New Tiger Jacob Townsend

Name: Jacob Townsend
Height: 186cm
Weight: 89kg
Age: 22
Games: 28
Goals: 4
Drafted: Greater Western Sydney, 2011, NSW/ACT zone selection
2015 trade: Involved in a swap with Richmond in which the Tigers gave up their fourth round selection (currently pick 70) in exchange for Townsend and the Giants' seventh round selection (currently 120).
What the 2015 AFL Season Guide said: "A tough, hard-working midfielder, Townsend made further strides in 2014. Usually given a tagging role, he is a ferocious tackler and averaged 7.5 per game in his eight senior appearances. Is still learning how to win his own ball to have a greater impact on games, but remains on track to become the hard nut most teams crave."
Where will he play? Townsend is an inside midfielder who could fit in well at Richmond and has the ability to pick up possessions while also shutting down a dangerous opponent.
State league form: A pre-season foot injury ruined the first half of Townsend's season and a bout of concussion late in the year limited him to 10 games in the NEAFL. He was consistently among the best players but found opportunities at senior level difficult.
Best AFL performance: Townsend picked up 22 possessions and kicked a goal in the Giants' round 23 loss to Melbourne this season, which was his only senior game for the year.
Why Greater Western Sydney traded him: The pick acquired for losing Townsend – who isn't in their best 22 – allows the Giants greater flexibility in this year's draft.
What is he good at? Townsend works hard and has a fearless attack on the footy. He can be a valuable run-with player, with his tackling a standout.

That's a nice little highlights video.
Tackling was quite impressive - looks like they hurt.
Excited to see how this kid goes.
-
Yes, if he can do that in the centre and turn the ball over regularly it will definitely help. Will also help the tag on Cotchin, probably why we got him.
-
... and they couldn't prevent Jack from being happy ... ;D
-
I really like the way this guy goes balls & all in on his tackles, probably have to wait his turn though as Morris will probably get a gig as a defensive pressure midfielder.
:highclap
-
Good luck to him, I notice a bit of Ranga in there, hope he's better than Steve O'Dwyer, PLUS hope the PB gets a go and doesn't sit in the Maggos for 3 years.
-
Welcome to the team kid! Fingers crossed you're the next Miles! And why shouldn't you be? Clearly going to be a few of these guys at GWS and maybe GC who can't get a game.
Now it's time to play Thomas too, and I mean that genuinely.
Miles, Thomas and Townsend all inside mids.
-
Great pickup for a 4th Rounder. Welcome to the RFC Jake! :clapping
This kid will not let us down.
-
Will be a good squad player and decent deal. He can certainly tackle, thanks to his rugby background. We love a steal from GWS.
My issue is that thats all we have done in the past decade just recruit squad players. Even with FA. Miles is an exception but we got pretty lucky there.
If we keep continuing to recruit players in our 15th - 30th picked player rank how long do we have to do this for top 4?
-
id guess 90 - 100 years
-
Phew, was thinking longer

Champion Data’s Jacob Wilson joined Fox Footy’s Market Watch podcast to provide all of the latest information on the players traded on Friday.
JACOB TOWNSEND
GWS youngster Jacob Townsend joined Richmond along with pick 120 in a deal that saw pick 70 head to the Giants.
The 22-year-old only managed one game in 2015, but Wilson provided some of his statistics from the NEAFL that would have undoubtedly attracted the Tigers.
“He’s an inside midfielder, so hopefully he can come in and fix the Tigers’ midfield,” Wilson said.
“In 2014, the Tigers were the third best stoppage team. Last season, they dropped down to 11th.
“They’re bringing in a guy who is a really strong tackler and a really strong clearance player.
“He averaged six clearances and six tackles (per game) in the NEAFL and in 2014 — from his eight games in the AFL — he averaged 7.5 tackles per game.
“Hopefully he can come in and be that big body they need to supplement their midfielders.”

Player manager Winston Rous has already helped seal a move for another Giant this Trade Period, with tough inside midfielder Jacob Townsend and pick 120 going to Richmond in exchange for pick 70.
"It's a very good opportunity for Jacob … they identified him a fair way out," Rous said.
"Probably their best season of late was maybe 2013 when Dan Jackson won their best and fairest. Probably since that time they've maybe lacked a bit of grunt on the inside, that real enforcer-type role.
"Jacob through his 20 games of AFL football is something he's really shown, he's really aggressive, a strong tackler and he'll give Cotchin and the likes a chop out."

Who won the Townsend trade?
Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Author: Ben Hocking
The big question
One of the least visible trades done so far this exchange period involves the move of Jacob Townsend from GWS to Richmond in exchange for the Tigers' fourth-round draft pick (currently pick No.70). The Tigers are no strangers to spotting unwanted GWS talent, having picked up Giants discard Anthony Miles in the 2013 draft. They obviously haven't paid a high price for Townsend, but have they got another success story or have they bought a list-clogger?
Giants win
This is a difficult one to spin. Townsend only played one game for the Giants this year and the club was genuinely trying to find him a new club so that he could continue his career, rather than being cut and disappear into obscurity. It is the sort of list management that holds you in good stead with players and player managers, who can see you care about their welfare, rather than picking players up, using them and throwing them on the scrap heap when they are no longer required. It is hard to see the Giants even using pick No.70 in this year's draft.
Tigers win
The Tigers are the kings of recycling unwanted talent. Miles, Bachar Houli, Ivan Maric, Shaun Grigg, Troy Chaplin and Taylor Hunt can all attest to that. In Townsend they have picked up a player they clearly think will add something to their list for next to nothing, and avoided another club potentially poaching him in the draft (assuming the Giants were planning on cutting him loose). The Tigers managed to finish inside the eight with a game-plan that didn't require a great deal of tackling last season, but having a player prepared to put his head over the ball and make his opponents accountable is something the Tigers lack, and Townsend will at least add something different in that regard.
Our verdict
Townsend is the real winner here, getting to continue his career with a club looking to play in its fourth straight finals series, rather than having to wait anxiously to see if any of the other clubs would take a punt on him in the draft. Richmond have done well to pick up for practically nothing a player that targets an area they are deficient in, but these trades that involve finding players new clubs so they can continue their careers elsewhere ensure that virtually everyone is a winner.

Dan Richardson on Thursday said of Townsend: “I’m sure fans out there may think that we’d like a bigger name than Jacob Townsend ... but he’s a tough inside midfielder and apart from being a good player himself, I’m sure he’ll help out other midfielders like Trent Cotchin.
“He’s a clearance player and kicks goals from clearances.”

Ermm......see this is what poos me is spin statements like above which paint an incorrect picture .
in his career Townsend has only kicked 4 goals from 28 games. They might have happened mostly from clearances but it hardly can be relied on as a key attribute of the player if he's only done it a few times and averages 1 goal per 7 games

Townsend's first interview on the RFC website ...
VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-10-27/townsend-the-tiger
* I think there’s a better opportunity for me to play more senior football here. As everyone knows, there’s a fair bit of top-end talent up there at the GWS. And, talking to Anthony Miles, he’s enjoyed his time here. He was playing some pretty good footy up there (at GWS) but at each club some players just don’t get the opportunity that they would like or they probably deserve. He thought his career was up but he went off and got really fit and then the Tigers gave him a chance. And, he took that with both hands and finished top four in the B & F in his second year. It’s probably also credit to the Tigers themselves. It shows that if you get put into a club, with the correct training environment and standards, then anyone can come out and play how he’s played the last two years. So, I’m really happy to be here at the Tigers.
* Playing style is nothing too fancy. I’m not that quick or can’t jump that high, so I just like to go out there and try my best. I like to put a tackle on here and there. That’s basically what you can expect coming from me. I’ve spoken to a few of the Richmond coaches and they’ve said bring what you bring every week. Go out there and play your role for the team, whether that’s tagging someone or playing normal footy. Helping out Trent Cotchin as well because he obviously gets tagged a fair bit, being the superstar that he is. That’s basically what they told me my job was for the team.
* I can’t wait to get started and stuck into training. It’ll be good. Get out there on the training track and get taught a fair few things off some of the boys here.

Leeton's Jacob Townsend targets AFL season-opener for Richmond debut
By Peter Doherty
Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga)
Dec. 1, 2015
There’s 3000km and three months between Richmond’s pre-season training camp in Palm Cove, Queensland, and the start of the AFL season at the MCG in March.
But they’re two key points in Jacob Townsend’s mission to make the most of an opportunity at the Tigers.
An ankle injury has limited the former Leeton footballer’s training since he was traded by GWS, but he’ll be ready to throw himself into it in a couple of weeks.
“It’s been a bit frustrating coming to a new club and you want to make a pretty good impression the way you attack the pre-season, but it’s been pushed back a bit,” Townsend said.
Townsend has renewed an association with former Giants assistant, Mark Williams, who’s on the Tigers’ coaching staff and was on the phone as soon as the trade was confirmed.
“I’ve sat down with him and we put together some pre-season targets to hit,” Townsend said.
“Hopefully I can achieve those and be there for the first pre-season game (against Fremantle in Mandurah, WA, on February 18).
“Hopefully I can play some good footy in the pre-season and the goal is to play the first round against Carlton.”
See your ad here
Townsend played 28 AFL games in four seasons with the Giants but was becoming starved of opportunity.
The switch has been good for his confidence.
“When a club says there’s a contract for you, they’re obviously keen,” he said.
“And they’ve shown in the past, the Tigers, that they recruit players that fit their team well and they think can play in their side in certain positions.”
Richmond made it clear they were after an inside midfielder and Townsend’s role will be to win contested ball, lay tackles and help out players like Trent Cotchin.
“I just want to work on my hand-balling in tight and my clearance work… and in the AFL games I’ve played, I’ve been a bit inconsistent so I’ll try to improve there.”
The 22-year old has sound advice for the latest crop of Riverina rookies.
“Be patient, bide your time and when it comes, make the most of it – there’s always someone the following year getting drafted,” he said.

Astbury's view of Jacob Townsend:
We had an intra-club match last Friday and he really showcased why we brought him to the football club. He was extraordinary. He went forward and he hit the scoreboard. He’s an absolute brute and he really bullied some of our young midfielders. He really showed us why we’re looking forward to him playing in 2016.

Good to have a little prick on board
-
If he simply just does the job we bought him in to do, he could turn out be our most important recruit in years.... :shh
-
Yep, looks like he tries to hurt blokes when he tackles them which I likey very much.
Hopefully he becomes an enforcer for us - the type of player who makes those around him play better.
-
Well there is no better team to test him against then a full strength Freo.
Any of the players that stand out in this game should go on with it..
-
Of all our newbies - I'm probably most excited about this bloke. Can't wait to see how he goes in the NAB challenge.
-
He's certainly rather agricultural and i have modest expectations but he does seem to kick goals which i like as a mid.

It he can make griggster play Vfl

Bleeding from the ear. So how do we think he went?
By all accounts he is a bleeder
-
Only had 11 possies (6 contested, D.E. 72% ) but had an equal high 7 tackles for us.
I'd like to see how Townsend goes when we have our full midfield contingent playing and we can judge him properly. He's been brought in an extra hardnut around the ball to protect and help out Cotch and Miles.
-
Certainly doesn't take a backward step and no doubt will help Cotch and Co. but the coaching staff need to provide some guidance re his stand-over style as giving away stupid free kicks via brain explosions can be momentum killers, Jacko was a master and there was nothing more frustrating to watch.

He might be a type of player we need, but is anyone convinced he's actually any good?

Thought he just went , will get more chances to prove himself, would need to lift a cog or two to break into the team, interested to see how Moore goes by comparison .....Markov and costagna caught my eye more

Protecting Cotchin from tags is new Tiger Townsend's aim
AFL.com.au
February 27, 2016
HARD-bodied Richmond recruit Jacob Townsend says he is committed to helping Trent Cotchin break tags this season and giving his new captain more freedom to win the ball.
Cotchin's average disposals have dropped the past three seasons from a career-high 27.5 in 2012, when he finished equal runner-up in the Brownlow Medal behind Jobe Watson.
The skipper was shattered after being held to just nine possessions in last year's elimination final against North Melbourne, with Ben Jacobs tagging him out of the match.
Townsend, who played 28 games in four seasons with Greater Western Sydney, was targeted by Richmond in last year's trade period to fill an inside midfield role and take some pressure off Cotchin.
"That's going to be my focus coming in to this year, being there to help him break the tag a bit and allow him to play his natural game," Townsend told AFL.com.au.
"I'm really keen on building that friendship and on-field relationship to help improve his game and my game as well.
"I'll try and take a bit of that inside job off him but, 'Cotch' being 'Cotch', he tries to take more responsibility on himself because of the competitiveness in him.
"He needs to ask for help because your teammates are there to help in a game."
While Townsend has the size and physical game style to help break tags for his teammates, the Tigers have also recognised his pure ball-winning ability after a standout performance in round 23 last year.
The 22-year-old won 22 possessions (11 contested) against Melbourne in a performance that put him firmly on the radar of opposition clubs and had GWS lifting its efforts to re-sign the New South Welshman.
"GWS was making a play for me as well but I came down here to seek more opportunities," he said.
"If a club comes and seeks out your service, obviously they're pretty keen on you and that made me feel pretty good.
"The Tigers said they were after an inside midfielder and I think I fit that bill."
Richmond has not been renowned for tagging in the past few years and Townsend will bring an ability to play that role when needed.
He has also spoken to his coaches about a secondary role at half-forward, given the interchange cap will be reduced to 90 this season.
The onballer did not start full pre-season training with his new team until after Christmas because of a foot injury, but he has barely missed a session since and said his skinfolds and body composition were at career-best levels.
"The program down here has put me in pretty good stead before the season," he said.
"I've just got to crack in now and go out there and play my way and hopefully that gets me a game."

Tackling machine with another 9 tackles today. 3 goal assists as well.
-
He and Moore provided good grunt
-
Was better yesterday. Still can't help but think he's a less athletic Dan Jackson. Nice seeing him crunch some blokes though.
-
Pfft...Townsend at least looks a genuine midfield enforcer, not a plastic one like Hackson was......
-
Looks like he could be an asset to Tigerland. Time will tell though.
-
Must be in the first 14-16. Push the hacks out

Laid a couple of crushing tackles within a minute in the third quarter. I haven't seen tackling like that from a tiger since Tim Fleming.
-
Looks like he has a bit of filling out + maturing to do despite being a solid build already. Will be interesting to see how he turns out.
Maybe Tuck MKII?

Havent watched the NAB cups fully so may be making the same half assed assumption as Dad usually does but I reckon I have seem Townsend kick almost a handful of absolutely shocking kicks

Tis true but I think he's one of those players that, if he does mostly good, you're going to have to take some bad moments. Had some real clean looking clearances, seemed to work well with the ruckman
-
Reminds me of jacko, will get better with experience , goes hard , must improve on his head first tackling , will only come to harm doing that
-
I actually thought he was good last night before getting KOd.
Agreed
If fit for round 1 shpuld play
Prefer hom over Moore, who hasn't impressed me at all but early days
Moore's played like that since 2010...hardly "early days".....
I was referring to early days at the RFC ::)

After 6 seasons of evidence, you still need another few months to judge because he's wearing a different jumper? Surprising after you apparently only required two practice matches to judge Chol as having already surpassed McBean.

Nice twist of things but whatever.
Moore is player I don't rate, TBH dont understand why we picked him up but will give him sometime to settle in and hope he shows somethin. So far he's shoen zilch, which is disappointing
And stand by what i said about Chol, facts are he played all NAB games, McBean (the great hope of so many) played zero, zilch, nada....question remains why?

Why you ask? Its because he doesn't put enough pressure on when the ball is in his area. If he Fails to add this to his game and add it fast, its see you later. McBean needs to wake up or his career will be over before it even started.

Yep there must be certain 'non-negotionables' that Dimma thinks McBean doesn't do and Chol does. That's why he is playing. There's no way it's because he's surpassed him as a footballer.
Personally I think it's Dimma not seeing the forrest for the trees. Sure McBean's pressure might be poor but he's so far ahead of Chol in many ways and has attributes that can help us at AFL level. Needed to play some games in the pre-season.

The AFL industry is obsessed with defensive pressure but don't forget you need to kick goals to win a game. If we had small fast forwards who put pressure on, that would be a start. Chol still has a long way to go but he does provide defensive pressure.
-
I know the reasons. Was well aware of them last season when everyone was calling for him to be played and he wasn't. Biggest issue is his lack of defence pressure and 2nd efforts
Have just been trying to get people to discuss the possible reasons without simply saying "the coach doesn't like him". Which IMHO is a cop out.
On Thursday night Chol had little impact posession wise but his efforts in chasing and defensively are there to see, pity it didn't showup on the TV coverage

The obsession with pressure is largely due to full team pressing
Where the last defender is located near the middle Of the ground , to try lock the ball in forward
I the ball gets over the last line you are generally screwed. UNLess rance does something miraculous
Hence chols speed, defensive abilities are valuable

Yes Vickery's and Griffs pressure acts are exemplary

Thats why they will not play both in the same team unless they (Griff ) lifts in this area. Time is running out for him too :whistle
-
Yes Vickery's and Griffs pressure acts are exemplary
Exactly. Vickery has at least one or two efforts every game that are embarrassing for a bloke in his 8th year now. Seems to certain standards some blokes must meet and not others.
I appreciate that pressure is important but you're more likely to be chasing, harassing etc if you're losing every aerial contest/ not getting the pill.

McBean not getting picked because of his lack of defensive pressure only proves Hardwick has one rule for some and another for others....there's a few one-way running , no second effort bludgers who've been walk up starts right throughout his tenure.....Vickery, & Grigg for starters. Houli was allergic to physical contact for his first two years. B.Ellis runs but does stuff all else, in fact those last three were/are bywords for downhill skiing. Newman made a career of unaccountable football yet was a lock at the selection table. Add regulars like Griffiths & Lloyd.....hell Aaron Edwards got a start in a final despite not having a defensive bone in his body..meanwhile, Lennon gets dropped from a final for it. But hey yeah Supercoach 7 of 9 doesn't play favourites... :whistle
On Thursday night Chol had little impact posession wise but his efforts in chasing and defensively are there to see, pity it didn't showup on the TV coverage
Did you also see the at least three times when he gave up completely because doesn't have anything even close to a VFL - level tank, let alone an AFL one yet?
Oh & btw - contrary to your assertion, at this stage, McBean is far superior below the knees...picks the ball up cleanly for start, rather than fumbling, tripping over himself and stumbling about like a newborn giraffe as his big clown feet get in the way and inadvertently kick the ball from his grasp...
-
well not much more left to say is there
Could never understand why,to this point, he has never really been given a shot at it at a consistent level.

Yep. Had a moment in the ruck where he completely gave up on a contest. Got noticed by the commentators and seemed to get a massive spray from Cotch.
I'm certainly not having a go at Chol. He's an 18 year old rookie with no tank. However, if Dimma is playing him ahead of McBean based on these "pressure" and 2nd efforts then that's a serious indictment on his judgement imo.

Meanwhile, tough Tiger mature-age midfield recruit Jacob Townsend, who was concussed last Thursday night, will be available for Round 1 selection.
“He just had a bit of whiplash with his neck, but he’s resumed training this week, so no dramas there,” Burge said.

Needs to tackle without leading with his head.
-
Townsend, Griffiths and Vickery all need Phil Narkle headwear.
-
:-\
-
If he's our tagger who did he tag?
Wasn't effective.
-
He wasn't really given a tagging/run with role as far I could tell.
Ironically I thought he looked better in his perceived weaker areas tonight - kicking and outside play - than he did in his strengths - contested possession , tackling & shepherding. He certainly wasn't "protecting" Cotchin from Curnow in the first half. If he can can get both areas going at the same time he'll be more than useful.
-
Want to see more from the kid but would certainly keep playing him. Definitely has a crack!
-
He's slow and an ordinary kick. Well on his way to selection impunity simply because he "has a crack" and apparently Cotch needs more protection.
-
One trick pony
-
Thought he could have at least tested Murphys shoulder out. He was more fired up in NAB 3 than round 1.

Yeah
Or chopped out titch, gettin roughed up
-
Was just okay in fact I hardly noticed he was on the ground (yet to watch the replay). I think we need to give this guy a nickname including the word "blood". Has he played a game yet where he hasn't come off the ground under the blood rule?
-
This guy forward of centre with the ball in the space is the most frightening prospect for tigers fans. He's foot skills are shocking and his turnovers are killers. I'll give the kid some credit he's got balls and this comes through in his overhead marking but having blokes like him in the side isn't taking us forward.
-
So where's this midfield "enforcer", "protector" and "physical presence" we've been told about? I think I saw glimpses of him the hit & giggle matches, but sadly, he remains unsighted in the real stuff thus far....

kicking from both teams was absolutely shocking. At half time l was thinking of just getting up & leaving. Dusty is the only reason l stay to watch you never know what's going to happen he is explosive :snidegrin. if you were watching Townsend was injured in the 2nd quarter. He takes some big knocks. The team down a player don't help any. Too much overuse of the football we cause our own grief.

dont think he is smart enough to do the former without the later

Another former Giant shows his wares
Picked for his first game of the year and just his fifth as a Tiger, Jacob Townsend could hardly have chosen a better time to put in a career-best performance. The ex-Giant was recruited to Richmond at the end of 2015 with the brief of adding grunt to a midfield then lacking a hard edge. As such, it was surprising to see him thrown forward with such good effect. Having booted just four goals in 32 games prior to Sunday, Townsend had three majors to half-time and was consistently found himself in dangerous positions. But beyond his scoreboard impact, the 24-year-old was clever with his leading patterns, clean below his knees, showed strong hands and tackled with intent. He finished as the game’s leading goalkicker with six majors and has made it hard for the selectors to drop him before September.

Townsend has changed the way he plays this year. He is still hard at it but he controls his aggression and when to use it. He is not rushing his kicks now which has helped his overall game and confidence. I see him and Caddy playing the role as targets in the forward line to assist with Jack. Well done :clapping

Better kick for goal than Caddy .
Have we seen a Liam Jones style reinvention of a spud footballer lol

Good on the kid, deserved his chance after a consistently strong season in the twos and took his chance with both hands. Now to back it up this week and cement his spot for the finals and probably save his career

He needs to have a bad game against St Kilda to remind us not to play him in the finals.

Tough Tiger hoping to time his finals run
afl.com.au
27 August 2017
THE PLAUDITS came thick and fast after Jacob Townsend's six-goal haul for Richmond against Fremantle last Sunday, but one of the game's greats took the praise of the Tiger to the next level.
While Richmond coach Damien Hardwick labelled Townsend's performance as "impressive", Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton emphatically declared the hard-nosed 24-year-old as "the toughest player in the AFL".
Townsend told AFL.com.au the Hawks hardman took a shine to him during their time together at Greater Western Sydney.
"Derm has always had a few nice things to say about me, even back at my time at the Giants," Townsend said.
"He was a specialist coach working with the key forwards, but we'd always stop for a chat.
"I actually got told by my mum what he said, so it's always nice to be spoken about in that manner.
"I don't think that's true, though, there's a lot of tough players out there, but it's always nice to hear that from a great of the game like Derm."
Townsend knows he can't live on compliments if he wants to survive in the highly-competitive world of AFL football, but his day out against the Dockers not only tripled his career goal tally, it gave the Tigers' match committee a reminder of what he can achieve if he's given the chance.
Last Sunday was Townsend's first senior game of the season, and opportunities have been few and far between at AFL level for the Leeton product. He's played just five games in two seasons at Punt Road after only 28 games across four years at the Giants.
A hamstring injury to teammate Josh Caddy opened up a spot for Townsend in the finals-bound Richmond side, but it's his physical approach – not kicking goals – that is likely to give the tenacious Tiger the best chance of retaining his spot.
"I certainly wasn't expecting to go out there and kick six when I got picked in the side, I was trying to shut down Michael Johnson and I found myself on the end of the play," he said.
"That's the most I've kicked in a game at any level, so it wasn't a bad day.
"I only started playing footy when I was 12, because before that I played rugby. I've always been a fan of tackling blokes hard – I guess it's my calling.
"Hopefully I can keep my place in the side with a good performance against the Saints on Sunday, and make it pretty hard for the coaches to drop me."
For a player who likes it rough and tough, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a career as a tradesman awaits Townsend when his time at the highest level concludes.
Out of contract at season's end, he hopes his days "on the tools" are still a while off yet.
"I'm doing a carpentry course, which I'm pretty passionate about, so when the times comes to hang up the boots I look forward to that," he said.
"But I feel I have plenty more to give with my footy, so every week I'm going to go out there and play my best I can, and hopefully that gets me more games."

so far an upgrade on Caddy purely because he is a great set shot kick!
-
Has had a great year and deserves to be playing in the senior team. Well done son :cheers
-

Caddy kicks a better goal from 1m out though
-
:lol
-
so far an upgrade on Caddy purely because he is a great set shot kick!
Purely because he kicks more than one goal a game.
Still think another good quick strong marking tall fwd is badly needed and would significantly improve us.
Caddy, Butler, Castagna, Rioli and Edwards who has spent a lot of time fwd have given us just 4 - 5 goals a game as a collective and far too often we have struggled to kick a score which has left us vulnerable and caused us some close losses as well.
Is anyone disappointed about Townsends defense pressure? id say not yet he aint super quick its important that we get both parts of the equation good defense and goal kicking from all of our fwds.
If we only get one or the other from players then surely that means there is room for improvement and possible change.

Players should never give up on winning a spot
Jacob Townsend's extraordinary ascension to Richmond's senior side in the past fortnight is a win for fringe footballers. The 24-year-old kicked six goals in his season debut against Fremantle a week ago, then five more on Sunday against St Kilda in the Tigers' most important win in a long time. Townsend's career is a tale of persistence, after he previously played 28 games in four years at Greater Western Sydney before adding four for Richmond last season. He has been outstanding at VFL level, showing no outward signs of frustration at his plight. Townsend's reward will almost certainly be a spot in the Tigers' final in two weeks' time. - Marc McGowan

How Richmond scored Jacob Townsend for nothing
Sam McClure
The Age
29 August 2017
lmost exactly two years ago – in round 23, 2015 – Jacob Townsend kicked a goal midway through the second quarter to give the Giants a five-point lead over Melbourne.
Two of the 8974 in the crowd at Etihad Stadium were Richmond's head of footy, Dan Richardson, and list manager Blair Hartley. They were there specifically to watch Townsend, who they believed could be the answer to their needs for another inside midfielder.
Hartley wasn't happy. He was worried the career-high 22 disposals Townsend amassed that day would cost them more in a trade.
In the end, they gave up a fourth-round pick that GWS didn't use. They got him for free.
"It's a credit to our recruiting team," Richardson said. "Our scouting suggested he did have the capacity to go forward and find the goals; that game showed us he could play at the level."
It was the fourth goal of his career and he didn't kick another one at AFL level for nearly two years. He's now kicked 11 in two weeks after defensive forward roles on Michael Johnson and Jake Carlisle.
Townsend is now in the box seat to walk out onto the MCG in front of a potential crowd of 90,000 in a qualifying final against Geelong.
He originally came into the team because of Josh Caddy's injury, but it would seem unthinkable to drop Townsend now.
The man who helped find him at Greater Western Sydney, Kevin Sheedy, says he's one of the toughest players he's seen.
Sheedy said he couldn't be happier that Townsend has managed to silence the doubters.
"Everybody has doubts early," Sheedy said. "Unless you have super talent ... they're always ready to doubt you.
"He never had the speed to do it early, but I'll tell you what, there won't be any kid tougher at Richmond. He's the toughest kid I coached at the Giants.
"He was a very good, tough young rugby kid who crossed over to the AFL. I have no doubt Mark Williams would have convinced Richmond to get him."
For all of his Giants career, he was essentially used as a second-string inside ball winner, filling in for the likes of Callan Ward when required.
Townsend grew up in Leeton, a town in NSW's Riverina region, a little more than 500 kilometres west of Sydney.
He would travel huge distances for games, before the Giants eventually relocated him to Blacktown in his final year of high school.
He played in the Giants' TAC Cup team before being selected on their inaugural list for the 2012 season, where he played in the club's first five games.
"He's a beautiful young kid," Sheedy said. "He's honest, dedicated and he's a listener; he takes it all in."
At 187 centimetres and 89 kilograms, Townsend wasn't the player Richmond expected to line up next to Jack Riewoldt as a second marking option.
Richardson admits even they have been a little surprised by the past two weeks, but also said his form in the VFL had been consistently excellent.
"He's actually deceptively tall and deceptively strong," Richardson said.

Your club's X-factor in the finals
Herald-Sun

RICHMOND — JACOB TOWNSEND
Perhaps not even Jacob Townsend could have imagined a month ago that he’d be in this position. Having not played a single game all season, Townsend replaced the injured Josh Caddy in a mid-forward role in a Round 22 victory over Fremantle, kicking six goals from 16 disposals. A one-hit wonder, surely? Not quite. He backed it up with five goals from 12 disposals against St Kilda a week later. Now, he’s set to feature in September. Can he prove an unlikely spark for the Tigers throughout this year’s finals series? Richmond fans will be hoping so.

Jacob Townsend has been battling away under the radar and that's the way he likes it
MARK ROBINSON,
Herald Sun
8 September 2017
JACOB Townsend is a bolt of lightning.
Three weeks ago he was looking to find work as a carpenter next year but, after two stunning games for Richmond, he’s now football’s version of Roy Hobbs, the kid with talent who virtually disappeared and who has returned to be the wildcard match-winner.
“I’ve heard of Roy Hobbs,” Townsend said. “I don’t know who he is because I don’t watch a lot of movies.”
Hobbs was a baseball fantasy story which became a movie. Townsend’s story is inspiring and real and upon us at the MCG.
Unbelievably, it is Townsend’s third game of the season.
The promising junior from Leeton in NSW was preselected by the GWS Giants in 2011. He played eight games in 2012, then eight, eight, one, four and now three games in each season since.
So, who are you and where have you been?
“Just been battling away,” he said.
His story is untold because Townsend has wanted it to be untold. Until now.
Townsend has a stutter. He can’t remember when he didn’t stutter. Regardless of his football talents, he never wanted to be superstar footballer because he knew he’d have to do TV interviews and, well, that wouldn’t be happening.
He kicked six goals in Round 22 against Fremantle and he wasn’t approached by the TV boundary rider on the field after the siren.
He kicked five goals in Round 23 against St Kilda and again wasn’t sought after on the ground for an interview.
If he kicks another bag against Geelong on Friday night, there probably won’t be a post-match interview, either. He says he will wave them away.
“That’s my plan anyway,’’ he said. “I’m not sure if that works or not.”
Townsend likes to talk. He’s sharp, he’s interesting and he’s interested. But always there’s the stutter. It stops him, he says, from joining conversations because he knows he’s going to stutter before he speaks. So, he shuts up.
The internal torment rages. “I know what to say and how to say it, but can’t say it,” he said.
The condition affected his confidence as child.
“Definitely. I didn’t talk much, didn’t want to talk much. Even now, talking to mates, I know when I’m going to stutter before I even do it, so I won’t say what I’m going to say.
“If we’re having a conversation about something and I know some facts to add to the conversation, and if I know I’m going to stutter, I won’t say it and I won’t try to say it. There’s the frustration.
“I could talk to you now and I could do it once or twice, but if I see you tomorrow it might be 10 times worse.
“Sometimes when I’m comfortable and calm, it doesn’t really come as much, but when I’m anxious or put on the spot a bit more, it does.
“I’m good right now, but if you put a camera there (pointing across the table), even if it’s not live, but I know the camera’s there, I’d go to poo.’’
Townsend was a normal kid from Leeton, near Wagga Wagga. He had mates galore, two older sisters in Emily and Sarah, and played as much sport as he could. But there was the speech problem.
He says he was never bullied at school or on the football field as a junior or as an AFL player; “I don’t really talk that much on the ground’’.
“I wish I didn’t have one, but you have to face it,’’ he said. “I know people don’t judge me, well, I don’t think they do — I haven’t been bullied or teased growing up.
“Going through school everyone says what they want to do. I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I knew I couldn’t do anything where I’d have to talk in, you know, I can’t do anything where I have to talk a fair bit because I wouldn’t be able to do it.
“I am self conscious about it ... internally, I wish I don’t do it.’’
Mum Denise and dad Peter took him to speech pathologist in Leeton when was a young boy. “I remember half going to him, but I can’t remember what I did there,” he said.
In Year 7, he started online therapy with a specialist, which lasted until Year 10.
His parents, who separated when Townsend was in Year 2, he said, were constant support, even sitting in on the online therapy sessions. He’d also have one-on-one sessions.
“For some reason I was worse with Dad talking,” he said. “He was never harsh with me, but for some reason it was worse. I always remember him telling me to be calm and to settle down.”
The therapy stopped when he was about 16.
“You can’t beat it, you can’t completely cure it. I know there’s things I could do but I just don’t choose to do them,” he said.
“I don’t know why, it’s weird. If ... I ... talk ... real ... slow ... like ... this ... and I think about what I’m going to say, I could talk like this for hours, but I feel like I’m talking slow and it sounds weird.’’
Townsend was challenged when he made rep teams as an under-15, then at the nationals in the under-16s, for the GWS TAC Cup team in 2010 and then at the AIS Academy when 17. That season he moved to Sydney as a zone selection by the Giants.
Being out of his comfort zone in the Riverina meant meeting new teammates and officials.
“I was sort of scared, not scared, but embarrassed by it at the start of rep footy,” he said.
In his AIS year, in 2011, he thrived as a rugged inside midfielder and when he got to the Giants, coach Kevin Sheedy loved him.
“He’s the toughest kid I coached at the Giants,” Sheedy said.
In the AIS program, which included a trip to Italy, Turkey and London, Townsend had to introduce himself to his peers.
“I remember that speech,” he said. “I remember I had to get up and talk about myself at the start. It was daunting like it always is. The first 10 seconds is not easy, but I get calmer, I don’t know how it works, but I work myself up pretty badly if I know I have to stand up in front of a group.’’
He played 11 games under Sheedy in his first season and just two reserves game because every time he recovered from injury, Sheedy picked him.
His issues though spread wide. He wasn’t an elite runner in speed or endurance, nor did he rack up huge numbers as a midfielder and he was injury prone. His lack of professionalism didn’t aid him, either.
So much so, at the start of his third season, he was given an alcohol ban by football manager Gubby Allan.
From Round 1 to the bye round he was off the beer. A week before the bye was Josh Bruce’s birthday and, after he texted Gubby, he was allowed to break the curfew by a week.
“That’s when I started to take it more professional and knew I wasn’t just going to get games.’’
He didn’t. He played eight games in 2014, one game in 2015, and was at Richmond in 2016.
His career continued to stagnate at the Tigers.
In 2016 he played four games, his last in Round 14 against Brisbane.
Playing as a midfielder in the VFL, the 187cm Townsend was asked to play ruck/key forward when Ben Griffiths was a late out. “I didn’t get anywhere near the ball,” he said.
His 2017 season had him playing mid-forward in the VFL until Josh Caddy ripped a hamstring against Geelong in Round 21.
Then arrived the lightning bolt.
Coach Damian Hardwick called him on the Thursday before the Dockers game while he was shopping at Highpoint and told him he was playing.
His role was to be accountable for Michael Johnson, compete in the air, hit it hard on the ground and anything else would be a bonus.
Mostly always the last man picked and first player booted, he was unsure if he’d get a second game. He did.
The next week it was St Kilda’s Jake Carlisle and the instruction was the same — the 11 goals was the bonus.
Unbelievably, three weeks ago, the 24-year-old was a world away from the MCG and 95,000 fans.
He’d wondered if he was good enough, or if he would get another contract and, in fact, had started planning where he’d clock up the hours next year - he needs 800 - to become a qualified carpenter.
“It was frustrating throughout the year,’’ he said. “But I focused on playing my best footy and being the first cab off the rank if someone goes down. I had to be the first one picked.’’
He was, although he wasn’t anticipating being the second key-forward target alongside Jack Riewoldt.
It’s not known if he’ll be employed to do another pest role, because after kicking 11.1 in those two games, he might be the hunted and not the hunter. Riewoldt will likely get Tom Lonergan, Harry Taylor likely will go forward to Alex Rance, leaving Lachie Henderson for Townsend.
“Two weeks ago, I didn’t think I would be doing this,” he said.
“It is a lightning bolt, but I don’t feel any different. I don’t like or want too much attention. No one knew who I was and I was pretty pleased with that.”
They know him now and another haul of five goals will have all the footy world talking about him. All except one.
The man himself knows actions are more powerful than words.

The latter was as important as the former. Should play next final especially if it's against GWS. Point to prove!

Heard a stat last night that he has kicked 12 goals in his last 21 (might have been 23) kicks in the AFL.

Townsend lets stellar season speak for itself
afl.com.au
17 September 2017
SOMETHING remarkable happened to Jacob Townsend on Monday night.
The shy kid from rugby-obsessed Leeton in New South Wales' Riverina region had only days earlier bravely discussed, in a News Corp article, his ever-present stutter.
It wasn't new for anyone who knows him, because it isn't something he can hide despite no lack of trying. He sometimes chooses listening over engaging in conversations to avoid speaking in front of others.
Then came the VFL's night of nights at the Crown Palladium this week. The J.J. Liston Trophy count was reaching a crescendo, and player-manager and MC Nigel Carmody announced, with a round to go, Townsend could not be beaten.
The 24-year-old Tiger knew what that meant: he would have to get up on stage and speak in front of hundreds of people.
"I was actually pretty calm and collected as soon as I found out I was going to win it, when I couldn't get overtaken," Townsend said.
"I wasn't sure how I spoke or anything, because I wasn't really paying attention to myself, but I was actually calm and maybe me talking about (my speech impediment) … might have helped me a bit when I had to go up there."
Townsend's life is unrecognisable from a month ago, when he was coming to terms with the possibility he might, for the first time in his six-year AFL career, fail to play a senior game. It could have ended there.
But Josh Caddy's hamstring injury in round 21 proved the stroke of fortune Townsend needed, finally giving him the chance he craved so badly.
His response is now part of the Richmond fairytale, with 13 goals in three matches, including two in the 51-point qualifying final thumping of Geelong in front of a 95,000-strong MCG crowd.
"It's obviously been good and (an experience) I'm going to cherish for a lifetime, coming from a small town and now playing in front of 95,000," Townsend said.
"We came out first and that was loud, then when the Cats came out, you couldn't hear their team song, because of all the boos. The Tiger Army, as they call it, is obviously big and a very passionate bunch of fans."

The writing was on the wall for Townsend late last year, with established midfielders Dion Prestia and Caddy arriving at Punt Rd from the Gold Coast and Geelong respectively.
Townsend, purely an inside midfielder then, had already struggled to earn just four AFL games in his first season with Richmond after crossing from Greater Western Sydney. An honest discussion with the Tigers' coaching staff hammered the point home.
"If I was going to be playing a game in the ones, it would be more forward than coming into the middle," he said.
Townsend, never one to duck a challenge, set about thriving in his new role as a de facto key forward at just 187cm, while still spending time in the midfield.
Richmond's VFL and forwards coach Craig McRae and development coach Xavier Clarke, as well as Townsend's "crew" – teammates Anthony Miles, Sam Lloyd and Taylor Hunt – became his greatest assets.
McRae is rapt for Townsend and raves about his marking ability, which was on show late in last week's final when he outmarked the similarly sized Jed Bews on the goal line.
Less hailed but just as valuable as his scoreboard impact was his nullifying jobs on relative giants Michael Johnson, Jake Carlisle and Lachie Henderson.
McRae's sole complaint, with tongue firmly in cheek, was he wouldn't have Townsend at his disposal as the VFL Tigers also strive to win the premiership.
"He's pretty shy; the spotlight doesn't shine on him like others that like it," McRae said.
"He goes about his business really well and he's a hard trainer and uncompromising in his attack on the ball.
"I was going to ask 'Dimma' (Damien Hardwick) if he can play (in the VFL preliminary final) – he wants to play – but I think he's well entrenched in the AFL at the moment, so that's a high priority for him and the team."
Townsend is suddenly a man in demand, and the spotlight is suiting him just fine.

The first foundation GWS Giant to reach the AFL grand final
Andrew Wu
The Age
29 September
Like every player, Jacob Townsend dreams of winning a premiership. Having done the hard yards with Greater Western Sydney, he could not have been at a better club to achieve that goal, or so you'd think. By the end of 2015, he had read the writing on the wall. He had to leave. Few could have imagined that by leaving the Giants for Richmond he would beat his former teammates to the biggest day of all.
Townsend looks at it differently. He did not leave because he felt the Tigers were better placed for success but because he believed he would be better placed to be part of their success.
"Where I saw myself playing my best footy I had to leave," Townsend told Fairfax Media this week. "I didn't leave on bad terms, I knew the team would be going OK but I didn't see myself in that team because of all the first-round draft picks, there were so many good players."
As an inside midfielder, he was competing for a spot against captain Callan Ward, high-end draft picks Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly. With young bulls Matt Kennedy and Jacob Hopper to come from the academy, opportunities would be scarce. Kevin Sheedy's departure hurt him as well. He had been one of the master coach's favourites.
It was not easy for Townsend to knock back the two-year contract on offer, but he knew leaving was the right thing to do. A foundation Giant, he had been part of a young team that knew their time would come. He remains close to several former teammates. He catches up with Jeremy Cameron, Devon Smith, Ward, Aidan Corr, Sam Reid and Tim Mohr whenever they are in Melbourne. He's also received well wishes from the Giants' coaching staff.
Townsend's ambition to play in a flag was not a consideration in moving. His career was on the line. It still is. He does not have a contract for next year. The grand final could be his last game.
"I was focused on trying to show them my best footy and play as many games as I possibly could," Townsend said. "I knew the Tigers were a big football club, they'd been in three finals series and been done. I knew they had a pretty good list but it didn't come too much into calculations when I was changing club."
Upon arriving at Punt Road, he was confronted with a familiar problem. He could not crack a regular start in Richmond's midfield. After four games last year, he did not get another look in until round 22 despite excelling in the VFL where he won the competition's best and fairest award.
Townsend had asked coach Damien Hardwick for the change in role to give him the best chance to break into the side. With their tall forward stocks down, Townsend, at 187 centimetres, wanted to play as the down the line target whose job was to bring the ball to ground.
"He said that's a short-term fix because I'm not a key forward," Townsend recalled. "Fortunately for me, [Josh] Caddy went down with a hamstring in round 21. I came in round 22 and played that forward role."
He excelled with bags of six and five to seal his place for the finals.
"I'm not one to get a big head, I didn't think it was normal, it's not going to happen every week," Townsend said. "The following week I just kicked two, which I was still pretty happy with. I had a focus to do my best job in the side which was to stop their key backs taking their marks. I was on the end of a few goals which has been good."
Townsend has made a mark on Hardwick as one of the players who has become "the sum of the parts for our side".
"One thing about Jacob Townsend, he will give you a contest every day of the week – he's incredible," Hardwick said. "I've got to take him out of our training drills half the time because I'm worried he'll smash half of our players. It's a great story of perseverance. It probably sums up our side a little bit: the resilient nature of a lot of our players and the stories that come through. He's a great one."

Leeton helps Tiger Townsend soak up AFL success
Peter Doherty
Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga)
3 November 2017
A trip home to Leeton is helping Jacob Townsend get to grips with his place in history as part of Richmond’s premiership-winning team.
Townsend said the magnitude of the achievement – for him personally, and for a club hungry for success – is only just beginning to hit home, more than a month after their grand final victory against Adelaide Crows.
“To come back home and see the family and everyone, they're keen to have a chat about it so it’s probably only started to sink in now that I’m a premiership player and, yeah, it’s a good feeling,” Townsend said.
”I walk up the street and there’s always someone that wants to have a chat about the game, and say congratulations. I think the whole town was behind me and the support has been good… so it’s good coming back here.”
Among the celebrations, Townsend has fond memories of the playing group gathering in the middle of an empty MCG to sing the song late on the Saturday night.
He hasn’t got around to watching the game back yet and said the excitement of the occasion has rendered the match itself a bit of a blur.
But his two goals and that tackle will go down in history.
“I can’t remember too much of the game which is weird for me because I normally can remember games,” he said.
“I suppose everyone brings up the tackle on the boundary there on Matt Crouch. And it’s obviously always good kicking goals. I can’t even remember when I kicked them!”
Townsend said the message at quarter-time was to back their game plan, and their trademark pressure. He also overcame the disappointment of kicking into the man on the mark with a shot after the siren.
“I didn’t even know I had the free kick at first,” he said. “And then I wasn’t sure whether to drop punt or barrel. I was a bit far out and it didn’t come off.”
It was the way he responded to that minor setback that mattered, as Richmond upped the pressure, took control and didn’t let up.
It summarised his season too – the Townsend tale of being called up late in the home-and-away season, making the ‘pressure forward’ role his own, and ensuring he couldn’t be dropped.
As well as an AFL premiership, it’s also earned him at least another season at Punt Road.
“I’ll be there for another season, at least,” he said. “I haven’t signed as of yet – we’re talking through it now – but I’ll definitely be there next year.”
Townsend isn’t required back at Richmond until early December. But he said there’s a commitment among the players to make sure 2017 was no flash-in-the-pan.
“You don’t win a premiership too often so I’ve enjoyed myself the last three or four weeks… but we spoke about it within the playing group to enjoy the win but make sure when we come back for the pre-season, we’re in pretty good nick,” he said.
“We don’t want to fall behind and take four or six weeks to find our feet in the season. If you don’t start well, it’s tough to come back from there.”
Townsend said they want to learn from, not repeat, some of the history lessons of others.
“I read an article the other day about (former Hawthorn captain) Luke Hodge and the 2008 premiership – they were pretty young like us and, they didn’t take it for granted but they partied hard and they found out the next year that you can't just turn up and expect to play well or to be there again the following year.”
Townsend has also caught up with some Leeton-Whitton players, where he could trade tales of drought-breaking premierships, after his junior club claimed its first Riverina League flag with victory against Collingullie-Glenfield Park.
“I had a bit of a chat to them and obviously it was a good year for the Crows as well,” Townsend said.

Such a good set shot and competes well in the air.
Love Towner.
-
He got Higgins and Ziebell too, and he flies in at the centre bounce looking to kill someone almost every time! :lol
-
I love the way Towner looks like he is absolutely stuffed, head bowed slightly, hands on hips sucking in the deep breaths, then as soon as his opponent is in range, he gives them a sharp bump, whack with a forearm or a hard shove.
You can see it really gets under the opposition's skin. Great to watch. Like in the Grand Final when he does it to Lever in the last qtr and Hartigan gets upset and gives Towner an elbow to the back. Towner pays him the perfect insult, he doesn't even slightly react. Hartigan looks basically like a twit, and is clearly not focussed on the job.

Reminds me of Hampson but without the action after the "absolutely stuffed, head bowed slightly, hands on hips sucking in the deep breaths" bit

What is his contract status?
I thought I read his contract expires at the end of this season.
-
Yeah might be wrong but think he got one year
Would give him three and put Grigg, Houli and Eliss x 2 all on one year each

He's going to need to step it up over the next week or 2. There's huge pressure in our f50 on our small and medium forwards

Reckon Moore will take his spot eventually... :shh

Would like to see Moore in team but I hope we can fit both Townsend and Moore in the team.
-
Townsend bring a lot of physicality to the game which I reckon helps or small forwards a lot. And if he does get a shot on goal, his composure is awesome.
Reckon this is what someone wanting to take his spot will need to bring to the team.

Like Moore a lot, he would give us the type of versatility in our forward line that we currently get from playing Broad down back

The flag Tiger whose future hinges on Lynch
Matt Thompson
afl.com.au
Jul 11, 2018
RICHMOND's September revelation Jacob Townsend is one of many players across the AFL whose future hinges on Gold Coast co-captain Tom Lynch.
With the Tigers' interest in free agent Lynch well known, fringe players like Townsend will have to wait to learn just how much is left in the pot.
"For a lot of those players, and I would imagine Jacob included, yeah it is more a conversation at the end of the year," Townsend's manager Scott Lucas told Macquarie Sports Radio on Wednesday morning.
"Let's not be silly, the phrase at the moment for a lot of clubs, (is) we don't know if we've got a million dollars or no dollars.
"And Richmond I would say it's fair to suggest would have a strong interest in Tom Lynch, so what they do, and how they manage their books is attached to the decision that Tom will make - as it is for Gold Coast and other clubs that are interested."
Townsend garnered a quick cult-following his standout performance in Richmond's finals campaign last year.
The former Giant played his first game of the 2017 season in round 22 and kept his spot in the side all the way through to the Grand Final where he kicked two of his total 16 goals.
Despite having played for the senior side in eight of the first nine games this year, the 25-year-old finds himself stranded in the VFL with spots in the ladder-leading Tigers' 22 hard to come by.
"He is out of contract, he's spent some time in the VFL this year, working on his form," Lucas said.
"I think when he's back in form he'll be back in the team, and they want him in the team, it's just a matter finding his very best form again."
Lucas remains optimistic a deal for Lynch won't push Townsend out of Punt Road altogether and expects there will be a new contract on the table for his client at the end of the year.

'I'm not sure what's going on': Flag Tiger in limbo
Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
Sep 29, 2018
OUT-OF-CONTRACT Richmond forward Jacob Townsend accepts he'll likely have to wait until the end of the Trade Period to know if his future is at Punt Road.
But the 2017 premiership player is optimistic he'll stay a Tiger and has no desire to leave the club despite an up and down season.
"We're talking about it now and I'm not too sure what's going on," Townsend told AFL.com.au.
"There could be a fair few changes with players that come and go, like any other team [has], and I think I'll just have to wait and see who comes before anything is done.
"Being the type of player I am and with my experience, I think it will be at the back end of trade period so I'll have to wait and see."
Townsend, 25, was dropped to the VFL three times this season before he broke his lower left leg in the final VFL game of the year.
The former Giant only played 10 AFL games in 2018 after his remarkable run last season where he broke into the side in round 22 and held his spot to win a premiership medal.
But, while he remains realistic about the business side of the competition and is open to his manager talking to rival clubs about new opportunities, his preference is to remain a Tiger if he can.
"I love Richmond so if there was a deal here I'd probably take it, I love all the boys and it's been pretty well documented how tight we are as a bunch," he said.
"At the end of the day, you have to look after yourself but players are on AFL lists to play AFL footy and boys I'm pretty close mates with might have to change clubs for more opportunities.
"That's just the industry."
Townsend had surgery two days after breaking his lower leg in the first minute of the Tigers' win over Frankston on August 25 when he was tackled by former teammate Jake Batchelor.
"As soon as I did it, I knew it wasn't great," he said.
"My foot got stuck and my leg went the other way, and when I came off my leg was a bit bowed and the doctors weren't sure what was going on but they knew it wasn't good.
"It was the last game, which was a bit of a shame because I didn't know if I was going to come back into the AFL side or not."
He had a plate put over his fibula and his syndesmosis joint wired together, which means he may require another operation down the track if that causes irritation.
In the latest step in his rehabilitation, he shed his moon boot last week and will now focus on strengthening his calf muscle again.
Despite its dramatic nature, Townsend remains confident his injury wasn't as bad as the one that robbed Dan Rioli of half of his season this year.
He also believes he'll be available for round one 2019 - wherever he may be playing - with plans to spend most of his off-season working on the leg.
"The surgeon said I shouldn't miss footy at all, that's the plan anyway," he said.
"From start to finish, it should be about four months and it's been four weeks now, so still a bit to go.
"I'll be in the club a fair bit over the off-season to try and get it right.
"I'll probably miss a few weeks [at the start] of pre-season although we come back on December 5 so I probably won't train before the [Christmas] break again.
"Then I'll be back in full training post that."

Jacobs pressure is next to none, has opposition looking over their shoulders....Something definately missing in the Prelim
Gotta give him another year at least IMO

With Lynch joining, we need to keep our options open to see how the dynamic of the forward line will work.
I'd retain him for next season for sure.
-
Even with a broken leg he would have been better that some against Collingwood.. :lol
Seriously though, I think he would have been a reasonable match up for De Goey?? even giving up 4cm? maybe not big enough though
Would hate to see him leave as his hardness is something I think we lacked at the end of the season

Townsend set to depart Tigers with two teams in the mix
AFL Nation
Mon, 1st Oct 2018
NAB AFL Trade Radio journalist Damian Barrett believes premiership Richmond forward Jacob Townsend will be on the move to St Kilda.
Townsend, who’s out of contract at the Tigers, will apparently seek a move elsewhere, looking for greater opportunity.
“Jacob Townsend will be seeking a new footy home, as we’ve known for some time,” Barrett told NAB AFL Trade Radio.
And I’m told it’s St Kilda who is showing the major interest in him.
“There’s a meeting teed up for that to be thrashed out, but there are other clubs interested in him.”
Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd knows of another club keen on Townsend’s services.
“My understanding is the Gold Coast Suns will look to bolster their mid-range players and will look to meet with Townsend, if they haven’t met already.”

With a broken leg??????
Being satirical. Towner on one leg is tougher than what some of those blokes dished up vs Pies!
Honestly I'm surprised anyone would pay anything for Conca after that performance...mind you he wasn't that bad throughout the year, just clearly shouldn't have been playing, same as Lambert, Dusty etc.
-
Still think Towno could be utilised in a tagging role and be used inside 50 when required. That would release Graham so that he can accumulate more disposals and impact more offensively.
-
With TL coming in, the question is can we have a medium forward like Towner or Moore in there with Jack and the smalls (ideally Rioli, Castagna, Butler, Bolton rotating through - Higgins I think should go into the midfield).
-
Why are people saying graham needs to be released from tagging duties? From memory hes had a tagging role very minimally, i can remember him slaughtering sloane in the grand final and being beaten by cripps in round 1. He may have done it a couple of more times than that but realistically at this stage of this career he is an elite defensive tackling/pressure player and is still developing his midfield game.

Why we would even consider letting this guy go is beyond me.
Just not one of Dimma’s favourites most likely.

Yeah played a big part last year, but in 2018 his goals and marking dryed up big time. Can't have him in the team just for tackling and pressure only the other major component went missing this year goals.1 year deal if anything.

Unless he unexpectedly gets delisted which I can't see happening then Towner has survived. Every side needs an enforcer who can crunch the opposition so I don't mind him being kept. The issue for Towner is will there be that 2017 defensive forward role on the opposition's key intercepting/rebounding defender in our 2019 two KPP forward line? If not or if someone else plays that role then where does he fit?
-
Could be setting himself up for another Liston ;)
He changed tacks from inside mid to forward 2 years ago. Why not change back, especially seeing as we are probably down one or two now ;)

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-26/premiership-tiger-could-still-seek-new-club
THE FUTURE of out-of-contract Richmond premiership hero Jacob Townsend remains uncertain but both club and player are comfortable with how the situation is placed.
AFL.com.au understands the Tigers will keep Townsend if he wants to stay but have encouraged him to explore his options, especially if he can secure a longer term and the likelihood of more game time elsewhere.
If Townsend opts to remain at Richmond, he could potentially be re-drafted as a rookie.
The Tigers would facilitate the 25-year-old moving to the club of his choice if he wanted to leave by cutting him from the list, thus giving him the power to go anywhere as a delisted free agent.
WHO'S LEAVING YOUR CLUB? All the latest retirements and delistings
That would make Townsend a three-club player after he started his career at Greater Western Sydney, before being traded to Richmond at the end of 2015.
Townsend was a key player when the Tigers won the 2017 flag, brought into the side in round 22 that year and booting 11 goals in the final fortnight of the home and away season.
His scoreboard impact and fierce tackling pressure were important. However, Townsend lost his spot in the senior side after round nine this year and eventually returned for two games before requiring surgery for a fractured left fibula in August.
INDICATIVE DRAFT ORDER Your club's picks
The hard nut is recovering from that injury and is ahead of schedule but will likely be out of full training until after the Christmas break.
Tom Lynch's addition as a restricted free agent means there will be more competition in attack.
Townsend has played 47 matches across his seven-season career.
-
Considering going to Saints or Swans you will find through draft.
Early reports were “ fake news “
Tiger offer has always been there
But you can’t blame him exploring all options
Especially if after 2 year contract

Given what we've given away for free (basically), I'd be highly inclined to keep JT around. But if I were him I'd take a 2 year deal from a good club who clearly see a place for him in their side.
Hugely important for depth I reckon. But he's gotta do what's best for him. Good luck and no hard feelings whatever decision he makes. Always be a vital part of that premiership we'll all cherish

The Swans are yet to find a direct replacement for Gary Rohan after the speedy midfield/forward joined Geelong this trade window.
But Menzel may have competition for the seemingly up-for-grabs role. Swans list manager Kinnear Beatson confirmed Sydney has already met with axed Richmond premiership forward Jacob Townsend as well as delisted Fremantle defender Cam Sutcliffe.
The Tigers hope to retain Townsend as a rookie for next season but gave their blessing for him to search for a new home.
The delisted free agency period opened yesterday.
The delisted free agency window closes on November 16.

Tiger Townsend could become a Giant ... again
By Anthony Colangelo
The Age
2 November 2018
Jacob Townsend's former club the Greater Western Sydney Giants are considering re-recruiting the 2017 Richmond premiership player.
The Age understands Townsend underwent a medical at the Giants on Wednesday, with the forward also being courted by Greater Western Sydney's cross-town rivals the Sydney Swans.
While the Swans move is still a possibility, there has been a push from within the Giants playing group for the club to bring the medium-sized forward back to the expansion club.
Townsend was delisted by the Tigers but they have committed to giving him a spot on the rookie list should he fail to find a new home.
The 25-year-old can be signed by any club as a delisted free agent. The Swans are also considering signing unwanted Geelong forward Daniel Menzel.
While he may not be a midfielder, the Giants lost a lot of experience in the trade period (Ryan Griffen, Rory Lobb, Tom Scully and Dylan Shiel) and Townsend's return would add to their mature-aged and mature-bodied playing stocks.
Townsend is from Leeton-Whitton in New South Wales and was traded to the Tigers after the 2015 AFL season. He was taken as a zone draft selection by the Giants in 2010 and is still on very good terms with the club and players.
He was initially viewed as a midfielder but his worth as a mid-sized forward became apparent late in the 2017 season when he became an integral part of Richmond's premiership.
Kicking 16 goals in five games in that season he played his first game in the side in round 22. A six-goal performance against Fremantle in round 22 was followed by five against St Kilda in round 23.
His two-goal grand final effort capped off a remarkable cameo for the season.
He played 10 games in 2018, kicking 12 goals, but did not play a final after being dropped for round 20. In the VFL he fractured his ankle late in the season.

Yer, let’s pay Bellis $400k and delist Townsend!!

When is that little cheats contract up??
You constantly have a go at Bellis what i dont get is why you dont lump both Houli and Short in the same boat. There is not a lot of difference between any of them.
Townsend exactly what do we have. Not a MID he has failed abysmally in that role.So its a MEDIUM FWD. The bloke fails abysmally in most areas of the game but hey hes as tough as nails and unlike blokes like Bellis and Short he has a dip, Its not enough to keep him and hardly disgraceful that we decided he was expendable. But yes im in your camp id rather keep a battler like Towner than keep nuff nuffs like those mentioned.
What id really like to see happen is actually try to address the gaping holes we have in both areas, even if its only with a few rookies.
-
The Swans have picked up Menzel and they've said they are now going after youth in the draft. So we can now count them out.

As expected.
-
Does anything stop another club from jumping in and taking him sooner? Or is it an unwritten rule to leave them alone if another club signals their intent to re-draft them?
-
Done and dusted - he's staying.... :shh
-
With his rehab tracking well, Townsend, now in his fourth year as a Tiger, will be back to full training after the Christmas break.
The 25-year-old is thrilled to keep Tigerland as home.
“If something popped up I would have had a think about it, but I’ve made some lifelong friends here and I didn’t want to leave, so I’m pleased I’m still here,” he said.
“We’re a tight-knit bunch as a group,” he said.
“We’ve lost a few good men over the trade period but that’s the business we’re in.”
“I’ll be seeing myself as a midfielder who can play forward, instead of a forward who can play midfield,” Townsend said.
“In 2017, I focused on playing good footy in the twos, so that when my chance came I’d be right to go. I was fortunate enough that the chance came and I took that, so I’ll have the same sort of mindset coming into this year,” he said.
“It’s another year for me to try and break into the side and play as many games as I can. I’ll be back into full training soon, try and get fit, and hopefully play some good footy.”

If he can improve his running, I’d like him as a run with midfielder. The backend of the year so opposition mids really get away from us.
Cats, Pies (twice), Doggies and GWS had really dominant ball winning mids. I love to see a 100% fit Towner giving Steele Sidebottom hell in round 2 next year
-
Steele Sidebottom is an absolute running machine and there aren't many players who'd be able to keep up with him. That being said, just to put pressure on him when he takes his kicks as opposed to letting him do whatever he wants will go a long way.

Is there a player who played in our premiership who has had less chances/opportunities than Jacob Townsend?
Is it simply a form or an injury thing or is it a personal thing with Dimma?
IMO he just doesn’t seemed to have had the same opportunity as players like Bellis, George, Butler, Broad or even Houli when their form drops off.
For me he is everything I would think Dimma wants in a player- super, super tough, great tackler, unselfish, versatile, sure hands, and an excellent kick.
He seems so far away from getting a game again IMO.
Is there something I’m missing?
Thoughts??

Agree whole heartedly with the big man.

Agree BT
I'm a huge Townsend fan.
I think last year the want to play Higgins kept him out of the side, then he busted his leg.
Interestingly, last year there were many on here who didn't want in the side after one bad game
He said at a pre match the other week that he had a seriously interrupted preseason because of said busted leg that was worse than we knew.
Originally I was genuinely surprised he d didn't play the first few weeks when Caddy was out. But after hearing about his preseason, not surprised now.
Will be interesting to see me gets a gig this week. He should, he's earned it
-
He was close a few weeks ago.
I think it's a simple case of him being able to fit into our structure. I love the guy but he is a seriously ordinary midfielder at the top level. He was in and out of the GWS team because of it. Same as with us until he moved forward and played great footy.
Played a good game or 2 early last year and then his form dropped. Unfortunately broke his leg later but was glad to see him retained.
I don't mind BT's idea of having him as a tagger at times but for a prolonged career he needs to play forward IMO. But where does he fit into our structure when all our bigs are fit? Right now I'd gladly have him up forward with Jack out, Lynch & Caddy out of sorts etc
-
He hurts people and others rush their disposal when he’s hovering. We have opposition defences waltzing through our forwards like they’re turnstiles.
It’s really not that hard.
-

Towner has announced his retirement.
-----------------------
Jacob Townsend talks to Cal Twomey about his incredible career and why he's finally calling it a day
AFTER spending the 2017 season starring at VFL level but unable to break into Richmond's senior line-up, Jacob Townsend finally cracked into the AFL team in round 22 of that year. The advice from coach Damien Hardwick was simple.
"It's a funny story. Just before the game he said, 'Righto 'Towna', all you need to do is go out there and kick six and you'll stay in'," Townsend said. "And that's exactly what happened."
Townsend booted six goals that day, then five the next week, and kept his spot in the Tigers' glorious ascent to their drought-breaking premiership, with Townsend kicking two goals in the Grand Final win over Adelaide.
His five-game, 16-goal run is the stuff of folklore at Richmond and the crowning point of a 10-year, 62-game and four-club AFL career that has reached its end after Townsend recently decided to retire.
The 28-year-old had been delisted by Gold Coast at the end of the season but invited to train with the Suns over summer as part of the pre-season supplemental selection period in a bid to win his place back on the list.
But Townsend made the decision to decline that offer, instead ready to move into the next phase of his life.
"I thought about it and knew I was going to be fighting for my spot with someone else and I thought the time was right for me to call time," Townsend told AFL.com.au.
"I've got the next phase already planned out and I'm really keen for that so that was why I chose not to take up that offer. I was still keen to play AFL footy if they picked me up in the rookie draft but unfortunately they didn’t and I thought the time was right.
"It was a tough call because everyone's always saying, 'You're a long time retired', which I completely get, but I've been fighting for my spot the last four years and I wanted a bit of certainty."
Townsend's late run to the Richmond premiership will be the defining point of his career, and saw him become a life member of the club, with his crunching tackle on Crows midfielder Matt Crouch remaining a memorable moment for Tigers fans as they've pored over the replay of the first of their three flag wins under Hardwick.
"I tried to be the best player in the reserves just in case something did happen and pop up, and Josh Caddy was injured in round 21 and I came in and played my role and kicked some goals," Townsend said.
"After the round 23 game I actually thought I was still a chance to be dropped after that and I went and saw Dimma and he said, 'Don't worry about your spot, you're in'. It was probably the first time I felt like I wasn't on the outer after any game and I think it was the most calm I've ever been.
"Everyone who comes up to me always brings up that tackle. It was just one of those moments that was there and I was fortunate enough that it was me, but that's probably the most recognised thing I've done in my AFL career."

Congratulations Towna. :clapping
May have only been 62 games but in 2017 they were 5 of the absolute best
You are premiership player, that can never be taken away
Should hire him as our tackling coach.
-
"That tackle"
No need to say any more
Thanks Towner enjoy the next stage of your life
-
That tackle was similar to the Cotchin one on Mumford. You could just tell in really fired up the team and put the oppos on edge a bit.
Stuff of legend. Well done mate.
-
Congratulations to him. His attitude and effort throughout his career and the way he conducted himself was first class. His first goal in the grand final in 2017 was significant and came at a pivotal point.

HOW HARDWICK'S PRE-GAME SPEECH INSPIRED TOWNSEND'S GOLDEN RICHMOND RUN
By Andrew Slevison
SEN
9 December 2021
While he’ll continue to have a kick with the Southport Sharks in 2022, the 28-year-old has opted to walk away from the elite level after his time with Gold Coast ended in October.
The 2017 Tigers premiership hero explained the reasons why he has drawn the curtain on his impactful, yet frustrating playing days at the top.
“It’s a bit of everything really,” he said on SEN Breakfast.
“The last four years I’ve been fighting for that spot on the list and I thought it was time for me to move on.
“To try and have a bit more certainty in my life, that’s what it came down to.”
Townsend gave some insight into the mental battles he has faced with constantly worrying about his spot in the senior side.
“Every Thursday was probably a call from the coach saying I was playing twos for the majority of the 10 years, but that’s fine,” he added.
“Up until this one (Suns delisting), I was ok with it, knowing it is what it is and I couldn’t do much about it.
“But as I got a bit older and after 10 years, I wanted a bit more certainty. Those early years, everyone asked me how I coped with it and deal with it. I couldn’t do anything about it, so I just had to wait and see what unfolded. I was fortunate enough to hang on there for the last four years.”
He holds a place in the hearts of many Richmond fans for his heroics late in the 2017 season.
Townsend went on a five-game run from Round 22 to the Grand Final where he played a key role as a defensive forward, chiming in with 16 goals through bags against Fremantle (six) and St Kilda (five).
The Leeton product proceeded to contribute in three winning finals, including the drought-breaking Grand Final triumph over Adelaide, and recalled what coach Damien Hardwick said to him in the lead up to that successful period.
“I wasn’t expecting to come into that team at all,” he said.
“But when I did, that’s when I was the most calm and relaxed I’ve ever felt.
“In the pre-game speech, that was my first game of the year, he (Hardwick) said, ‘Go out there and have six and you’ll be sweet’. Fortunately enough I did kick six.
“I think he might have said something the next week too when I played against St Kilda and kicked five. He didn’t say five, but he said something along those lines as well.”
The crunching tackle on Matt Crouch during the Grand Final win over the Crows is one moment that will live forever.
It is something referenced often when people think of his career.
“That’s probably the most recognised thing I’ve done in my AFL career and especially for Richmond fans,” he added.
“They always say that’s the best thing from that Grand Final.
“It’s just in the last 24 to 48 hours, the amount of support and text messages and messages on social media from Richmond fans, or anywhere, has been overwhelming.
“I didn’t really think it was going to be like that.”
After his time in the AFL, Townsend will now stay on the Gold Coast, play VFL footy with the Sharks and press on with a career in carpentry.
He finished with 28 matches for the Giants, 20 games and 28 goals for the Tigers, 12 appearances for the Bombers in 2020 (his most in a single season) and two games for the Suns.

Queensland VFL club Southport have announced the signing of Jacob Townsend ahead of the 2022 season.
Townsend announced his retirement from the AFL this week after 62 games across spells with the Giants, Tigers, Bombers and Suns, winning a premiership with Richmond in 2017.
The 28-year-old is set to remain in the Sunshine State for next year, with the Sharks revealing their newest recruit on Tuesday night.
