Correct, only need to make two picks in the national draft this year and the next few years with GC17 & GWS raiding the drafts
-
Just a minor correction ...... our picks are now 3, 19, 35, 44, 50, 61, 63 and 66.
Some clubs will pass on their last selection to keep one spot on their list open in the PSD. For example if Melbourne doesn't delist anymore players then they'll have to pass at pick 34 so they can get Luke Ball with first pick in the PSD. Likewise Sydney will have to pass at pick 53 so they can grab Bradshaw in the PSD. All up this means there'll probably be only 60 kids selected in total in the National draft this year.
-
We'll pass on pick 66 to save a spot for the PSD but it looks like we'll have our first 7 picks inside the top 60 with some clubs pass on their last pick. If some of the top clubs also top up with recycled players in the ND then all the better for us.

What happened to pick 44?

My bad! It's still there. I've edited my post.
So it's picks 3, 19, 35, 44, 50, 61, 63 and 66 although we'll most likely pass at our last pick 66 and keep one spot open for the PSD in which we have pick 2.

Goodoh mate, you had me worried there, I was trying to think whether we'd traded it.
Going by that some of our picks will drop down a bit then. Be interesting to see how many other clubs stop early.

Rookie elevations this year are actually going to associated with actual draft picks in the National draft. This will stretch out the draft to 95 picks all up with the last 17 picks used for selecting promoted rookies. It's being done to keep in step with the old rule requiring all clubs to have a minimum 3 National draft picks.
Upgraded rookies in 2010:
Adelaide: Brodie Martin
Brisbane Lions: Pearce Hanley
Carlton: Sam Jacobs, Aaron Joseph
Collingwood: Nil
Essendon: Nil
Fremantle: Greg Broughton
Geelong: Jeremy Laidler
Hawthorn: Matthew Suckling
Melbourne: Nil
North Melbourne: Cruize Garlett
Port Adelaide: Daniel Stewart, Wade Thompson
Richmond: Andrew Browne, Robin Nahas
St Kilda: Zac Dawson, Luke Miles
Sydney Swans: Kristin Thornton
West Coast: Nil
Western Bulldogs: James Mulligan, Liam Picken
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/87140/default.aspx
So we'll now have 10 picks all up in the National Draft but our last two picks will be used on Nahas and Browne.
Picks: 3, 19, 35, 44, 51, 67, 71, 78, 89* (Browne), 94* (Nahas)
We'll most likely 'Pass' on another pick to keep a spot free for the PSD.

That looks the way we are going.
Interesting there were that many further delistings for the 2nd list lodgement giving clubs more picks. Richo was the only forced one out due to injury and retirement :(. Normally there are hardly any delistings after the end of October. Maybe a number of clubs think there is more value in this draft than first realised.
The idea of reading out promoted rookies late in the National draft seems a waste of time btw. They are already on clubs' senior lists.

What's the Pre season draft order? According to a story about McPhee in today's Age Freo have pick 2, I thought we had pick 2.

That's a mistake in the paper. We have pick 2 and Freo have pick 3. The PSD order is just the reverse order of the ladder for all clubs that have a senior list spot still free on their list. If a club has its full quota (38 players) on its senior list then it can't participate in the PSD.

Thnaks MT! :cheers

why are the rookie elevations using draft picks?
i thought when you elevate a rookie, that is it, you just elevate them without using a draft pick?
:)

As far as I know it's to remain consistent with the old rule of all clubs using a minimum of 3 National draft picks.
The new rule just brought in this year is you can count one or more of your promoted rookies as one of those 3 minimum picks. Given it's a compromised and therefore a shallower draft pool for the next 3 years with the new teams coming in, existing AFL clubs may not see the need or want to use as many as 3 National draft picks especially if you're a top side and your 3rd pick is late in the draft where the kids have a low chance of making it. It'll happen more and more when GC17 and GWS hog the first rounds of the draft between 2010-12. An existing club may find it more beneficial for the quality of their playing list to only use their 1st and 2nd picks say and then promote a rookie from within their own playing stocks and have that counted as their "3rd pick".

will this rule that has been introduced this year continue after 2012?

Not sure torch. With 18 teams accessing the draft pool instead of 16 there'll be an argument to keep it.

Added the official draft selections in the first post of this thread for easy reference.
