good result.

would have preferred SOS but Leppa is next best IMO.

has all the attributes and is an experienced Assistant coach with success by his side.

It seems Hardwick is gathering a group of hard at it ex footballers not the soft type of Rawlings/Wallace/McCrae that we had previously.

Awesome result!
I love all the changes so far.
The next thing i want to here is us calling out Trengove's name on draft day!

Leppitsch becomes a Tiger

Richmond Football Club has secured the services of triple Brisbane Lion premiership player Justin Leppitsch as a defensive coach.

Leppitsch played 227 games for Brisbane from 1993-06, was equal winner of the club’s Best and Fairest award in 1999, won the Lions’ leading goalkicker award twice, and earned All-Australian selection on two occasions.

The 33-year-old immediately took up an assistant coaching position with the Lions in 2007 after a chronic back injury forced him into retirement.

As a player, Leppitsch excelled at both ends of the ground, but he built a reputation as an outstanding defender in a Brisbane team considered one of the best of all time.

“I’m excited about the challenge, to join a group that is on the right path, and I’m really keen to work with a new group of coaches and players,” Leppitsch said.

“I’ve never been involved in one of the bigger AFL clubs before, and I’m looking forward to learning about the history and tradition Richmond is famous for,” he said.

Leppitsch’s appointment comes hot on the heels of the announcement of recently-retired Port Adelaide ruckman Brendon Lade joining the restructured Richmond coaching panel.

Richmond senior coach Damien Hardwick said: “We’re thrilled Justin has made the decision to join the Richmond Football Club.”

“He has an outstanding pedigree as a player and assistant coach in such a successful Brisbane team.”

Justin Leppitsch profile

Age: 33 (turns 34 on October 1)
AFL debut: 1993 with the then Brisbane Bears as a 17-year-old
Total AFL games (1993-2006): 227
Goals: 194

Playing honours
Triple Brisbane premiership player (2001-03); Lions’ equal Best and Fairest winner in 1999; two-time winner of Brisbane’s Leading Goalkicker award (1997 with 50 goals and 1998 with 26 goals); dual All-Australian representative

Coaching career
Joined Brisbane’s coaching staff in 2007. Worked primarily with the Lions’ defenders. Acted as the team’s senior coach during the 2008 NAB Cup campaign

If you take our suggested off-field team of Hardwick, Lade, Leppa, Simpson as well as Cuz, we have representation in 8 of the last 10 premiership teams or coaches boxes and in all of the last 10 grand finals.

1999 - Simpson
2000 - Hardwick
2001 - Leppa, (Hardwick)
2002 - Leppa
2003 - Leppa
2004 - Lade, Hardwick, (Leppa)
2005 - (Cuz)
2006 - Cuz
2007 - (Lade)
2008 - Hardwick (a/coach)

Possibly Scott Lucas as well, we're still missing a forward coach in that lot

Great to see a strong, young enthusiastic coaching team coming together who will bring both their passion and new ideas to the list. They can all develop together - coaches and players.

Very excited about the potential of this opportunity  :cheers

You are correct.

And if Kane Johnson stays in a development role then we go to having someone in 11 of the last 13 premierships and the last 13 GFs.

fresh start means means he must go

Title: 'Torn' Leppa splits for Tigers territory (Herald-Sun)

I couldn't find this on the net yet so I scanned it in....

'Torn' Leppa splits for Tigers territory
By Greg Davis
Sunday Herald-Sun 20 Sept 2009, page S08

AFTER spending half his life in Brisbane, Justin Leppitsch is leaving the Gabba with a heavy heart.

But the triple premiership player also holds great hope of what might come from his new role as an assistant coach with Richmond.

Leppitsch, 34, played 227 games for Brisbane from 1993 to 2006 then spent another three campaigns in the Lions' coaching box.

One of the best centre half-backs of the modern era, he harbours ambitions to be a senior coach and knew he had to spread his wings to broaden his football knowledge.

Leppitsch said it was a tough call to leave the Gabba, but was excited about the challenge at Punt Rd under new Tigers boss Damien Hardwick.

"Seventeen years is a long time. I spent my first 17 years in Melbourne and the next 17 here, so it wasn't an easy decision,'' Leppitsch said.

"Two of my best mates still work at the club Michael Voss and Craig Lambert and guys like Brownie (Jonathan Brown), Blacky (Simon Black) and Luke Power are still playing, so I was a little bit torn.

"It's been a wonderful time but it was also perfect timing to head back to Melbourne.

"I wanted to be closer to my family and it was also time to experience something different and learn more in a football sense.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge at Richmond. I won't be sitting in my office twiddling my thumbs. I want to help the Tigers improve and help create a winning culture.

"They are no different to Brisbane when I first came here. They are a bunch of motivated guys who want to head in the right direction and are prepared to do the right things to get there.''

Leppitsch predicts a bright future for Brisbane.

"It made my decision easier knowing the club is back on track, that the rebuilding period is almost over and it is coming into what could be a successful period,'' he said.

"I don't know if that will equate to a premiership but the lean times are over and the club is in a strong position.''

the RFC website clearly states that leppa came to be our defensive coach.  doubt he'd be coaching coburg.  age should get their facts right.
