BY THE TAIL: Bernie boosted to bring Tigers back from brink of extinction
By VEXNEWS ⋅ September 29, 2009
Prominent Liberal upper house Victorian MP Bernie Finn is set to be drafted to the board of the Richmond Football Club by members fed up with the poor on-field performance of the once powerful club.
Finn’s move has grown from the grassroots of the club, with supporters urging Finn to step forward to save the club he loves:
Bernie, can you get rid of the faceles rich on the board ASAP please? We were alays a working mans/womans club. We were never the toffs. We need passionate RICHMOND people. keep Freezer but the rst can follow the sun tan kid off into the glare of his setting solarium!
Bustling Bernie has declined to speculate on his board plans other than acknowledge the groundswell of popular support.
The potential board member and master strategist has indicated to the left-wing press this morning that he regards the appointment of former Essendon champ and hard-man Damien Hardwick as a step in the right direction.
Those wishing to urge Bernie Finn to become Richmond’s new driving force should sign up to the “Bernie for the Board” stuff group - http://www.stuff.com/group.php?gid=89801650641

I knew him when he was a radio tech at 3aw. Always a mad keen tiger supporter but also very opinionated and outspoken.
Definitely loose canon material.

Quite true 65, quite true! :lol I guess there are a plethora of adjectives we can associate with the phrase "mad keen tiger supporter"

Bernie is a nice bloke. Has right-wing views, but that's his prerogative
Mad Tiger supporter, opinionated, loose cannon more than likely, but if he wants to stand, good on him.
Keeping the bastards honest would be what he's thinking.
I don't think he will stand but you never know.
Whether he would be any good, I have my doubts just like everyone else
But I've also heard a lot of bagging from people on here about how this club is run, and as soon as someone puts their hand up they're shot straight down
Bernie may or may not run, may or may not get voted in anyway, but like many of you, he is fed up with what's happening at the club
If you don't like him, don't vote for him.

I would think as a current sitting politician (even one for the non-govenring party of the day) he could not stand as he would have a major conflict of interest

Exactly. Someone made a fun stuff page on him just as a joke and someone seems to have run with it and made it legit, which I doubt it is.

Hope you're right.
We have enough loose cannons.
-
Some of his hansard stuff is comedy gold.
I particularly like him bringing the dangers of rap music to the attention of the premier. Its blokes like this one that make you wonder why we bother having state governments.
-
Some of his hansard stuff is comedy gold.
Yes, I would imagine so.
I particularly liked his recent comments on Tim Holding when he went missing in the snow, and Bernie was scathing on him for not having a GPS device. When Tim was told this, he smiled and said, "Bernie can have a tracking device, but people have got to want to find you" lol.

I think the law states that politicians cannot be directors of companies
Richmond is a registered company limited by guarantee so based on that he cannot be a director

Lets hope we get some more of those good, fast, hard and tight TAC CUP Premiership winning Cannons at the club.

Did anyone say loose cannon :whistle

Well it seems Bernie's going to sue
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victorian-upper-house-mp-bernie-stuff-obama-because-he-is-black/story-e6frf7jo-1225787152120
Victorian Upper House MP Bernie Finn to sue Crikey over report he doesn't like Barack Obama because he is "black"
Bernie Finn plans to sue website Crickey over an article he says defames him and insinuates he has racist views towards US President Barack Obama.
A VICTORIAN MP said he plans to sue over a report he doesn't like Barack Obama because he is "black and a Muslim".
Upper House MP Bernie Finn said he was "appalled and disgusted" by a story that appeared on online news site Crikey under the heading "Hey Hey it's blackface" and shows Mr Finn participating in a stuff poll "Why do you dislike Obama?"
He claimed the article insinuated he had racist views about the US President.
The article shows four different reasons why voters don't like the US President, including answers based on skin colour and religion.
Mr Finn said he didn't agree with Mr Obama's policies - and voted as such - but his political views were "never ever" about race or religion.
"These idiots have defamed me. They are saying because I don't like Obama because of his colour and that is a monstrous lie," he said.
"I have contacted my solicitors and it is unfortunate that Crikey being a news site - if you can still call it that these days - has done this."
Mr Finn said no Crikey journalist contacted him before running the story.
He defended his decision to vote in a poll that included possible racial and religious answers.
"I do think it is appropriate, because it is very important for that we can say that we don't like him because of the policies, not religion or colour," he said.
"There is a lot of people, like Jimmy Carter, who believe people don't like Obama because he is black."
Crikey editor Jonathan Green has not returned calls.

Let me see the clubs about to post a $1.5-$2.0 million profit, Benny Gale is back at the Club and has publicly stated he has asked March to continue past 2010, Harwick has spoke glowing about the set up at the club, we actually seem to have a long team strategy and someone or some group wants to start stirring up trouble
The faceless cowards are at it again are they :banghead :banghead
Cannot see Geoff Raines getting involved at the RFC at the moment - whether you want to admit it or not Jack, Geoff hasn't been very happy with the RFC in season 2009 :thumbsup

I recall reading in an interview that he wanted to get involved in the tigers but felt it would not be appropriate whilst his son was playing. He also came across as a very balanced and fair minded bloke.

No faceless Cowards, only tell you want was said, like it or not.
Has nothing to do with me

Any person should have the right to rum for any elected position at a football club. In fact it is better if there are challenges to the incumbents as they cannot take their position for granted.
The problem is, it seems the Richmond Football club is incapable of this happening without it representing the factional infighting of the ALP caucus. Looking at it from the outside, it appears that the whole period of Richmond being just crap on the field, is littered with ugly, messy stoushes for board positions.
-
Al the points you raise are interesting.....Does a challenge to the board or positions keep the existing people on their toes and thus as Don chip said"keep the bastards honest' or does it cause those people to' drop the ball' and take their eyes of the job ahead?

Sorry Jack I think you missed my point
I am not disputing what you have been told but at this time of the year there appears that there is always someone approaching somoeone else about running for the board or challenging the current board.
The faceless cowards as I like to refer to them as are the ones who always approach someone else to do it but never have the guts to do it themselves. Why?

Al, I agree any person has the right to challenge - I actually have no problem with that as long as they can bring something meaningful to the board whether that be a specific skill set that the board may lack or extra sponsors. People challenging for the sake of it .... well it doesn't do much apart for destablising things.
My frustration and point is as I menitoned above I have a problem with someone approaching someone else to do it - why don't they have the courage to do it themselves

Thats the sort i thing i tried to allure to WP. It never seems to be clean. It always seems to be someone running about behind the scenes trying to garnish support and white ant others. It's underhand, messy, and unhelpful. When ever someone approaches another to run for the board it should be for the reasons you mention. More often than not it seems it is just a political thing. Someone trying to load up with 'their people' - Someone that will back their point of view in the board room or something, I don't know. As I said It seems to me, from the outside, to be just the same sort of factional poo that happens in the ALP caucus. Self serving interests rather than just getting down to business in a mature and professional fashion. It just about makes you wonder if there are Carlton or Collingwood scum planted just to create this sort of disharmony.

Funny you mention that Jack. I spoke to him a few years back (at the tail end of the Casey era) and he said he offered to run but was knocked back by those in power. Seems they thought he might not be able to be objective enough given his son had just been drafted and that on top of that he wouldn't be able to do a board position justice because he was living on the Gold Coast. Not saying he should have run but the excuses he was given were p-weak and he certainly would have brought some successful capabilities to the table.

I find him real likeable, some people mighten like him.
I am a business associate of his,.
Nothing wrong with him, what you see is what you get.

Gigantor, somehow I missed your question.
I think people who are in an elected position should fully expect to have a challenge to that position each and every time it's up for re election. In saying that the point you raise is a very real drawback of any democratic process, in that people start working to keep their position rather than working to do their job. As of yet I don't know anyone that has come up with a clear cut better system yet.
