Saints dump Maguire
Martin Boulton and Caroline Wilson | October 30, 2009
ST KILDA'S Matt Maguire has been delisted by the club, leaving him stranded on 99 games and without a football home.
Despite believing he was going to be offered another contract by the Saints, Maguire is looking for a new club in a bid to extend his AFL career.
His manager, Paul Connors, said from Perth last night that the 25-year-old was ''feeling fantastic'' and ''raring to go'' after a season spent trying to break into the Saints' senior squad. ''We believe Matt has a lot of good football ahead of him,'' Connors said.
The club and Maguire's camp have denied reports he was offered a contract, but the former second-round draft pick remains confident of being picked up by another club
Maguire's delisting comes less than a month after coach Ross Lyon suggested he was a required player.
The coach has since met with Maguire and told him he is not in the club's best 22.
Maguire is expected to nominate for November's national draft or the pre-season draft in December.
Maguire played just 14 senior games since badly breaking his leg in 2006 and did not push into the senior side in '09.
Foot fractures related to his leg injury interrupted his 2007 and '08 seasons and he had corrective surgery after round seven last year.
A recognised key defender, Maguire played the majority of VFL games this season either forward or back.
The Saints are expected to speak soon with Luke Ball as the prospect of him staying on with the club next season has grown more likely. Ball has been strongly linked to Melbourne since indicating he wanted to swap clubs.
Meanwhile, defender Zac Dawson (dumped by Hawthorn 12 months ago) and Luke Miles have been elevated off the Saints' rookie list for next year.

I honestly don't think he's an upgrade on what we've got. I'd rather see thursfield, mcguane, rance and moore put on some beef this summer and stick with them (*not to mention Post if hardwick sees him as a KD rather than a KF).

Welcome to the forum mate, I would love to see Thursty put on weight as well.. :pray, but it aint gunna happen, 25 years old, rearing to go, Saints best years ago and a proven player barring injuries.... worth a look IMO.

Thanks mate, ..don't get me wrong, on past form he'd be our best defender by a mile, just don't think he's up to AFL footy anymore, bit like cogs, game may have passed him by he's missed that much footy.
You are probably right about Thursty, I'm giving it one more preseason (lol) bc I've heard in the past that our previous coaching department wanted our KD's lithe/agile with an ability to play tall/medium/small. So like every preseason I'm hoping something will give this time round and thursty/mcguane/moore come back 6-7kgs heavier :o ;D
-
26 year old slow-turning injury-riddled defender - no thanks! As with Browny, a badly broken leg has finished Maguire's AFL career.
But you already knew I was going to say that WAT ;). Happy birthday for yesterday btw :cheers.

Yep agree to some degree but he is only 25, Cogs is 28-29, I reallly reckon this guy would be handy, got to go now it will be interesting to read the thoughts later .... 8)

Bowden phase 2 FHO

No thanks, in many ways his broken leg was worse than Browny's as it was closer to the ankle
Too slow which makes him pretty much useless as a defender

Those who have seen them at training this season say that McGuane has put some size on up top.

Gee sorry but the point was he is older!!!!! That means we would get two more years out of McGuire then!!!

Yep from first impressions seeing Luke on Wednesday he looks bigger across the chest.

McGuane will never put weight on where he needs it most....above the shoulders :gobdrop

I think you under rate McGuane. Even the best defenders get beaten, given we had such a rabble of a side this year its not surprising the defense looked bad. I reckon he has the potential to be the next Scotty Turner, he just has to get some run going. And Turner took a few years to get going too.

Has his disposal also been augmented ?

People are still riding McGuane over his disposal from 2008 when he had OP. It was much improved in 2009 and should be improved further by the fact he'll have people working harder up the ground creating options once Hardwick reads them the riot act preseason.
-
l say McGuane had a good go in 2009. showed some desperation to win the ball just wish others like Newman would go harder

I think you're confusing McGuane with Thursfield. A lot more similarities between him and Turner than McGuane.

If either turn into the next Turner and get the same run out of defence I'd be happy

Dont think Thursfield has the same mongrel/hardness that Turner had.
-
This is just my opinion ,but i never rated scott turner highly to be honest.yes he was hard and tough ,but hardly an outstanding fullback..It seems with the passage of time he has obtained legendary status amongst richmond supporters, this i fail to understand

I think running through O'donnell, which was a turning point of the 2'nd semi against Essendon plays a large part in that. He did have a bit of a cult following though and of course, because he was not the most skilled player, his detractors as well. There used to one bloke behind the goals in the southern stand (standing up the back) who just bagged him relentlessly. Became a bit tiresome at times.
-
in fairness to us richmond supporters we havent had much to hang our hat on this past 20 odd years,so i guuess running through o'donnell would constitute a rallying point for us .
Damn Dima get us back to the top

Kept Dunstall goaless didnt rate with you ???
Dont know about the legendary status, but he was certainly one of our best defenders in the past 20 years. Or havent you sat through games watching Frangalas, Leys, Czerkaski, Howat and Laffy fall over everytime the ball crossed the centre square.

Well it doesn't matter now because it looks like the good old Blues have managed to do it again...
Maguire in mix to join Carlton's pre-season
By Jason Phelan
4:37 PM Mon 02 November, 2009
CARLTON is poised to throw discarded St Kilda defender Matt Maguire a lifeline with newly-appointed assistant coach Robert Harvey revealing his former teammate is under strong consideration for the club's pre-season program.
A small group of Blues players kicked off the club's 2010 campaign at Visy Park on Monday and while Maguire is a chance to join them further down the track, no other experienced uncontracted players - including former Demon Russell Robertson - are on the club's radar.
"We'll consider maybe asking Matty Maguire to train with us, but [as for] the rest I think we're pretty happy with the list we've got," Harvey said of the club's intentions for December's NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.
"We cover most bases with young guys, we think, and the holes that we have got we think we're capable of covering them.
"I think we'll probably have some talks [with him] this week. He may well be invited down, we're not sure yet, but it is something that has got to be discussed."
Harvey, who recently made the jump from development coach to full-time assistant, is excited rather than daunted by Carlton's on-field prospects despite the loss of Brendan Fevola and Nick Stevens in recent weeks.
"The list is so young so there is going to be a bigger responsibility on the young guys to step up and take more of that on board," he said.
"There'll be some experience lost so we are expecting those guys to step up a bit quicker than we would have.
"We all see that as a positive thing. The leadership from some of the younger guys we've got now, we're really excited about it, and it's a great opportunity for them."
The loss of the Coleman Medallist from its forward line was always going to require a major attacking rethink by Carlton's coaches, but Harvey maintained it wasn't a question of simply replacing one player with another.
"It won't be one guy," he said. "Obviously you can't just replace a guy that kicks the amount of guys that he does. It will be more of a restructure of the whole set-up and that's another thing that we're excited about.
"You don't replace that guy. You can't replace 100 goals a year, but three or four guys possibly can and that's what we'll be looking at. It might make us more unpredictable and we hope that's a good thing.
"We'll need some height down there so there will be some restructuring, but who or what that is we don't know yet."

I wouldn't be suprised if they are after his a a forward line option, they will be screwed this year without Fevola!
-
Top up and very desperate by the Bluebaggers if they go down this path. Maguire like Browny is finished due to also suffering a broken leg and the complications that resulted from it. With Fev gone Carlton don't seem to know anymore if they're coming or going :yep.
