With the 13 delistings there's plenty of low number guernseys now available - 1 (Newy), 4, 6, 7, 11, 19, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28. Farmer has been given #15.
Do you think any of our young cubs will change to an lower number locker?
-
Number 1 - isn't available. Don't they put that aside until the captain isn't the captain anymore and then they get their old number back
Polly will keep 6
I reckon our first rounder will get either 4 or 7
-
should they give Foley No.11?
:)

i personally do not like our Captain's in the No.17, just my opinion.
however, i believe the Captain's "old number" should be given to a player of his choice.
eg: Newman gives No.1 to Andrew Collins untill he returns.
Andrew Collins's No.42 gets taken.
now when Newman return's to No.1
Collins can choose any other available Number.
this will cause a lot of switching numbers around etc.
some people will say that players like to have only one number throughout their careers.
i agree totally, but wouldn't Newman rather Captain Richmond in his No.1 then No.17?
would Deledio want to leave his No.3 playing 100 matches in it, for No.17?
i don't like our Captain in No.17.
God Bless "the great" Jack Dyer, but couldn't they think of another way?
maybe on the back neck of the Captain have a little No.17 specially made for the Captain.
similar to what Western have "F.F.C" and Brisbane "B.B.F.F.C" and Sydney "S.M.F.C" ???
just "17" on the Captain.
and if Newman can not play, and Foley has to Captain, make a special jumper for him.
make the Captain feel special, Yes, they have been given the No.17 to wear as Captain, but Round 22, 2009 was Deledio in the No.17 as Captain???
doesn't have to be on the back neck, could make it on the chest next to either under the AFL Logo or major sponsor???
:)
just my opinion!

Dustin Martin will be 7.
Polak will keep 6.
Mitch Farmer will take 15.
Foley will remain on 41.
Andrew Collins will take 4.
Robbie Nahas will move up to 26
Tambling will take 11 b/c if we pick up Josh Free he will take his old mans number of 30 in much the same way we did it with Raines and Roach and with 19,22,24,25,26,28 also available it will keep the young draftees close together in the locker room also. :thumbsup
-
give Nahas No.22 or No.24
:)
maybe Browne, Graham need to get a lower No.
:)

Considering how well Roach and Raines worked out, perhaps they should not go down that path. Ohh, now I'm just being superstitious.

If we pick up Free it will only be as a rookie so I don't think he gets any favours with the number on his back, he can earn a higher number like everyone
-
Andy Collins - #7
Aston Martin - #4
8)
-
Robbie Nahas will move up to 26
We should give Nahas his height in inches as his number (68). :)
-
Andy Collins - #7
Aston Martin - #4
8)
I dont like nicknames as a rule but that one is a ripper. Smooth, Classy, Powerful and Quick! lets just hope he is not as tempremental as an Aston though. ahaha
-
Postie taking #4 has a nice ring to it but maybe he can inherit the #12 in a year's time.
should they give Foley No.11?
:)
Foley is a Scotty Turner fan. He had the chance to change to a lower number a couple of years back but he wanted to keep the legendary #41 :thumbsup.
-
Does anyone think we'll see Richo now pass on his #12 to Postie to wear from now on?

not sure they would wish to put that kinda burden on the kid just yet...Give him Royce Harts ol number instead 8)

Spot on WP.
Besides, no one has earned the right to wear it next year anyway.

I would say #4 is being kept for Martin.

SEN this morning said that Damien Hardwick is going to be giving all new recruits and players high numbers. They said he believed that the players need to earn a jumper with a low number and not just be handed it..
The only number change I can confirm is lil Nahas has changed to no. 26.

Here are the number changes:
Daniel Connors from No. 39 to No. 19
Andrew Collins from No. 42 to No. 24
Angus Graham from No. 44 to No. 25
Robin Nahas from No. 38 to No. 26
Jake King from No. 46 to No. 28
Andrew Browne from No. 43 to No. 34
The Tigers will not use No. 4, No. 7, No. 11 or No. 12, while No. 1 also remains vacant, with the immediate former recipient, Chris Newman, continuing to wear the “Captain’s No. 17”.

Just further to the above
Richmond’s No. 1 pick in next week’s AFL National Draft will receive a high number, as will all the other Tiger draftees.
New senior coach Damien Hardwick wants newcomers to earn their stripes with the Tigers before being considered worthy of wearing any of the numbers steeped in tradition at the Club.
The Tigers want to assess how their upcoming crop of draftees perform in 2010, as well as those who have been in the system for a year or two, before “reactivating” what are regarded as A-grade numbers at the Club - No. 4, No. 7, No. 11 and No. 12.
Those players with more than 50 games and four years’ experience were permitted to keep their number, which is what Nathan Foley (No. 41), Kelvin Moore (No. 40) and Matthew White (No. 35) did.

The reason why teenagers in the VFL days had high numbers was because kids promoted from the U19s were given a guernsey in the 50s by default so you knew they were from the U19s. I know this is meant to be a symbolic gesture about earning your way but performance matters more than what number is on the back of your guernsey :-\. Franklin was given Dermie's #23, Murphy and Gibbs didn't have a problem being given Fitzpatrick and Kernahan's numbers respectively, and Dangerfield at the Crows looks a young gun wearing Ricciuto's #32.

Yes MT but conversely it won't hurt our kids to be confronted with a perception that you have to earn your keep. It might be symbolic and it might be irrelevant by comparison but we have to start somewhere and this is as good a place as any. Performance will always be the only measuring stick but when you are a new coach trying to change a poor culture that has been ingrained for years then any subtle chance you get you take. All imho.

That's true smokey. It's no big deal but I guess I'm a bit of a traditionalist as far as sticking with one number once you settle on one. The reason those high profile numbers are high profile is because we associate each number with a past club champion and seeing all the young Tiger supporters wearing their hero's number on their back rather than players chopping and changing numbers throughout their career.

The playing list guernsey numbers have been updated on the RFC site

well, i hope they give the "low numbers" away!
:)
i don't like the idea.
give Tambling No.11!
maybe give Luke McGuane or Dean Polo a lower number?
i would like to see Dustin Martin in No.4!
like seriously, should of given No.7 to Collins.
-
No.22
No.36
No.38
No.39
No.42
No.43
No.44
available, Post did not change? maybe No.12 awaits him?
what about No.6? are they going to give Polak his number back?
Dustin Martin No.22!
:)
-
Yep presumably Polly will keep #6.
I hope Martin is a better prospect than the last few players to wear #22 if he is given it. Barry Rowlings would've been the last quality footballer to have worn it off the top of my head and that was over 25 years ago :-\.
maybe give Luke McGuane or Dean Polo a lower number?
They did a year ago. McGuane changed from 38 to 16. Polo with 14 has a low number.
-
The will be the nail in the coffin for Graham, wearing Jay Schulzs old number should just about finish him off. :lol
-
Franklin was given Dermie's #23, Murphy and Gibbs didn't have a problem being given Fitzpatrick and Kernahan's numbers respectively, and Dangerfield at the Crows looks a young gun wearing Ricciuto's #32.
Yeah but Buddy was given 23 in his 2ND year. I am pretty sure he started in No. 38 or something just like Roughead started in a high 30's number before being given number 2 in his 2nd year.
In Clarkson's first year as coach all the draftees were given high numbers in their first year :thumbsup
-
I like the idea of having to earn a lower number. Seems that Hardwick is a real thinker and is trying to get into the heads of his players every moment of the day to change their psyche rather than having them just going through the motions. To give a player a number first up that has been worn previously by a club legend with distinction may imply to that player that he will become the type of player his predecessor was. Respect is earnt not a given. That's been our problem for too long we have demanded respect like favourable draws, blockbusters, Friday night games, fair and objectionable media coverage. You gotta earn it boys through success. Dimma's got the right attitude. It's the little things we have been lacking in that add up.

That's true WP in the Hawks' case. Hawthorn at the time had most of their early numbers taken. In 2004 every senior listed player had a number inside 40.
Now that I've checked it's interesting when Clarkson took over he didn't pass onto the new draftees any number guernsey inside 30. So obviously Hardwick is bringing this idea to Richmond from his time at Hawthorn. In fact the free guernsey numbers above 30 were handed out to the new draftees in numerical order corresponding to their draft order.
Hawthorn guernsey changes 2004 to 2005
4. Rayden Tallis
7. Luke McCabe -------> Michael Osbourne (had #40 in 2004)
13. Lance Picioane
23. Nathan Thompson
33. Kris Barlow --------> Josh Thurgood (promoted rookie - had #42 in 2004)
34. Mark Graham --------> Bo Nixon (trade from Collingwood)
35. Adrian Cox -------------> Jarryd Roughead (ND pick 2)
38. Ben Clifton# ----------> Lance Franklin (ND pick 5)
40. Michael Osbourne -----> Jordan Lewis (ND pick 7)
41. Michael Rix# ----------> Thomas Murphy (ND pick 21)
42. Josh Thurgood# -------> Matt Little (ND pick 26)
43. Shaun Bergin# --------> Simon Taylor (ND pick 53)
44. Paul Shelton# ---------> Roury Kirkby# (rookie pick 2)
45. --------------------------> Clinton Young# (rookie pick 18 )
46. --------------------------> Thomas Willday# (rookie pick 34)
47. --------------------------> Kristan Height# (rookie pick 48 )
I still think this is all mumbo jumbo but hey if it worked for Hawthorn on their way to a flag then I can't complain if Hardwick tries it with us.
-
Just taking this further we should be able to predict our new draftees' guernsey numbers.....
Our free guernseys
1. Kept free for Newy while he is captain and wearing 17.
4.
6. Polly will keep this?
7.
11.
12.
22.
36. ND pick 3 - Dustin Martin
38. ND pick 19
39. ND pick 35
42. ND pick 44
43. ND pick 51
44. ND pick 67
46. ND pick 71
47. PSD? ....... could be given #22 instead if it's an experienced recycled player?
then rookies depending on how many rookies we pick up (maximum of six more including Jamie O'Reilly)
The club has said guernseys 4, 7, 11 and 12 won't be used in 2010.
-
it looks like some of our Rookies are going to be wearing 50's, according to that theory.

Richo's No.12 in mothballs
Caroline Wilson
November 26, 2009
RICHMOND will ask Matthew Richardson to select a successor to wear his famous No. 12 guernsey, but not until the jumper has been retired for at least a season.
The board's decision to remove No. 12 from the club's playing list is in line with the view new coach Damien Hardwick has brought to Tigerland. He said on the club's web site recently that younger players had to earn lower numbers.
Richardson, forced to retire two weeks ago due to injury, yesterday signed an agreement with the Seven Network to work as a commentator next season. His legacy at Richmond will be honoured with a public farewell at the Tigers' 2010 season-opener against Carlton.
Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale was unavailable for comment last night but said earlier this week the decision regarding Richardson's number and general legacy had to be ratified by the club's honours committee.
The widely held view among senior Tigers was that no player should wear No. 12 for at least one season and probably longer.
Joel Bowden's number will also be rested in 2010, along with the No. 7 worn by Nathan Brown.
The raft of youngsters to be taken by the club in tonight's national draft will all wear higher numbers in 2010, with the Richmond board determined to give Richardson, the club's symbolic hero of 1½ decades, the final say on No. 12.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/richos-no12-in-mothballs-20091125-jrqz.html
-
Retiring Bowden's number 11 is a bit rich. If they don't want to see it in senior ranks in 2010 then maybe they should upgrade Jordy from 13 to 11.
Should be given to the player who gets to the contest then only proceeds to slowly back out of the contest or not go hard at it at all and gets cheap stats that do not take the side anywhere. Jordy clearly upholds these characteristics.
I can understand the Richo one as most would. :thumbsup
-
I know Joel wasn't every Tiger fan's favourite player (especially here lol) but he was dual club B&F winner and AA. Yeah sure he got a lot of uncontested possies that were cheap but it wasn't always his fault either that he had to play the role he was given. If Geisch and Spud had recruited young key defenders to take over from Gas and Chubba and we didn't recruit some many HBFers who couldn't kick then Joel wouldn't have played in defence for as long as he did. He was more a midsized forward/HFF. The game against Brisbane last year showed that when he offered a second marking option to Richo up forward in the last quarter and we kicked 8 goals to pinch the game.

Player numbers finalised for 2010
richmondfc.com.au
By Tony Greenberg | Tue 15 December, 2009
Richmond’s pick in the 2009 pre-season draft, Dylan Grimes, will wear the No. 48 guernsey in his debut year of AFL football.
This is in accordance with the Club’s policy of making newcomers earn their stripes from the outset of their league careers, before being considered ready to wear a number steeped in Tigerland tradition.
The No. 22 guernsey, which had initially been earmarked for a player with previous AFL experience, will now be worn by second-year rookie Alroy Gilligan in 2010.
Gilligan was keen to take the number and, when the Tigers’ pre-season draft plans changed, it was decided that, as he had spent a year at the Club and shown such improvement in that time, he would be granted his wish. This was in preference to leaving the No. 22 vacant, given that several significant lower numbers will not be utilised at Punt Road next year.
Richmond’s No. 1 pick in the 2009 rookie draft, speedy Calder Cannons small forward, Robbie Hicks, will replace Gilligan in the No. 45 jumper.
The full list of guernsey numbers at Tigerland for the 2010 season is:
1. Vacant

So he does. :whistle
Alroy to 22 - now it makes sense. Biddiscombe, Meyer and JO-N to try to outdo.
I hope those Vacant boys kick on. We've recruited a few of them to the list. Must be a big family.

Interesting the article says "The No. 22 guernsey, which had initially been earmarked for a player with previous AFL experience". Hooper much have been very much in our plans until he stuffed up his chance failing to turn up to training.
