Title: OER Draft night tonight
Post by: Ramps on November 25, 2009, 09:25:11 PM
My preferred option will be to be in here when the draft is on rather than watch the telecast. I get the feeling the TV coverage will spend most of its time on the top 10 or 20 picks. I will have the radio on and post in here so we can discuss our new recruits.

At least you get a choice Ramps.  Sunny Queensland - beautiful one day, backward the next.

I am going to tape it off Foxtel and watch it in the evening with the family so I will be posting about this time tomorrow night. Really looking forward to it actually, more than the Deledio & Cotchin draft.

Yeah but I would prefer to watch it on TV.  It's all about credibility at home.  My missus thinks I'm balmy enough with the time I spend on all things football - if I'm watching it on TV then she will think of that as 'fairly' normal, even though it is out of season.  If she catches me listening to something on the radio for a couple of hours in November then she will be convinced her fears for my mental state are well founded.  Then again, she thinks that anyway given the agony she watches me go through for 22 weeks each year following Richmond.  Maybe the trick will be to don the headphones and sing a tune or 2 every now and then.  ;)

I'm watching from home with two of my mates coming over for dinner.
One a Hawk and the other a Bomber. Will be an interesting night. :lol

The TV coverage on Foxtel will only show the first round live. For the rest of the draft they will just have a scroll along the bottom of the screen while they interview the first rounders.

SEN will follow the whole draft call live apparently.

According to the local rag only the reading of names will be live, but the selections will already have been made.
Quote
By the time viewers tune into Fox Sports coverage of tonight's national draft, the top 17 picks will be set in stone.
Clubs will meet behind closed doors from 5.45 local time at the Melbourne Convention Center where recruiters will finally play their cards, nominating the teenagers they will select in the first round...
Fox Soprts will begin coverage from 5pm NT time before the draft is announced for the first time in reverse order from 10 to 1 about 10 minutes later.
After an ad break, the draft will resume in traditional order, with selections 11-17 revealed.
Melbourne's pick 18 could also be broadcast live in the event St Kilda discard Luke Ball will still be available...

Port have publicly said they will take Butcher at 8.

I don't think the AFL could afford for ball to not get through to Collingwood.

To be honest I dont like the draft system, we have never had any success with the draft system. I know all the arguments about the finances of it all but I think a club like Richmond could compete financially if we had to. If the draft was declared illegal tomorrow and Gary March came out and asked RFC supporters to put money into a fund to recruit players, I really believe we could raise several million dollars and in a hurry.

I will laugh if Brisbane picks Ball just in front of Collingwood RR. On the other hand if Ball does go to the Pies I hope they still just miss out on a flag and Malthouse screws Buckley by using all their picks on the present so there's hardly any kids on their list when Bucks takes over.

The draft system has always favoured clubs who maintain a healthy quality mid-age core to build around. When the draft system came in in 1986 we didn't have that core with all the retirements and stupid trades (plus no money). We had to rebuild from scratch starting with KB. We finally developed a core by 94-95 but then didn't build around them with youth so we went back to a situation where we didn't have a core and had to rebuild from scratch again. We're in the middle of that rebuild. We should be further along but like their predecessors Plough and Miller made numerous mistakes (eg: the Jordie trade the obvious worse one). Richmond has been its own worst enemy sadly when it came to recruiting. We've got to do everything right now beginning with tonight. At least 4 of these 7 kids we draft tonight need to go on to become AFL grade players capable of playing in a top 4 side.

Ball won't improve the Pies. Pies need someone to break the lines and get away with speed who can get it 30 or 40 times a game. Ball is just another in and under player at the Pies. For the premiership is a pipedream. :lol

Matthew Dea
DOB: 13/10/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: Ballarat Clarendon College /North Ballarat Rebels (VIC)

The former elite junior basketballer has rocketed up the order and now looks certain to be drafted. Dea has an exceptional vertical leap, explosive pace and the ability to play forward or back. His considerable scope for improvement is believed to be an attraction for the Lions. Adelaide and Collingwood are the other leading contenders, but he is now unlikely to last until the Pies' next pick (No.62). Dea captained the under-18 Country Victoria basketball team and was a member of the Victorian under-20 state team.

Massive topping up by the Saints. If they don't win a flag in the next year or two it's back to the drawing board and the old Aints.

Same applies to the Pies. By the time Bucks gets the top job the Pies may need another rebuild too. Ball won't enhance their list. Just another in and under with no pace.

Jeremy Webberley another Utility from Clarence in Tassie. Welcome Jeremy. :thumbsup

Leon Harris said that he knew nothing of Jeremy so a speculative pick but he also added that Hardwick kept up his promise of picking up players who knew how to use the footy so our picks up to Troy Taylor were seen as very good ball users according to Leon Harris.

Thats four now. Maybe they are picking the best available player as opposed to trying to fill a need.

Would rather we take a punt on a couple of talls like Dylan Grimes, Joel Houghton, Kyle Hartigan or Majak Daw
Could easily have guys like Webberley or Nayson train with us for a PSD or rookie spot, I know we can do that anyway with the guys left but with GC getting the first 5 rookie picks we'll only get a shot at 1 or 2 of them with our PSD and first rookie pick

That's it folks for us.

Just promoted rookies in Nahas (pick 89) and Browne (pick 94).

Pies have gone for Simon Buckley - another top up.

to be honest I think our recruiters lost the plot after 19. what can you say. :-\

does that leave us one pick in the PSD?
Who do they have in mind?

Fair enough strategy - sit back now and see what happens.  At this time last year Cousins would not have been on the radar.  Gives us a chance to have a further look at the best of those left.

North absolutely smashed this draft in the middle with players like Kennedy and McMillan. Good luck to them.

Richmond
National recruiting manager Francis Jackson

"There's always a few surprises - we sit here for six months looking at the draft, and you see things from your own perspective. Sometimes it's hard to understand the direction other people are coming from.

"I thought there were a few surprises particularly early, but the proof's always in the pudding, so we'll wait and see in a couple of years who was right and who was wrong. We're delighted."

doesn't sound like he actually chose anyone?

Hardwick and Cameron must of told him to "back off!"

because FJ didn't seem "happy" after a draft interview on SEN.

didn't seem to know much after Aston Martin and Ben.

hmmmmmmmm.

What the club says
richmondfc.com.au
By Mic Cullen 10:55 PM Thu 26 November, 2009

Selection No.3: Dustin Martin
DOB: 26/06/91, Height: 187cm, Weight: 86kg
Recruited from: Castlemaine/Bendigo Pioneers (VIC)

"Dustin was on our radar at the start of last year, and we're ecstatic to get him. We think he's a really quality player who's going to have an impact straight away. He's played some fabulous footy this year."

Selection No.19: Ben Griffiths
DOB: 17/09/91, Height: 199cm, Weight: 98kg
Recruited from: Blackburn/Eastern Ranges (VIC)

"Ben is a key forward and he's had an unfortunate run with injury, but we're rapt that he was there at pick 19. He's a terrific contested mark, has leg-speed and he's a very good kick, so he fitted our profile in that position."

Selection No.35: David Astbury
DOB: 26/02/91, Height: 195cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Tatyoon/North Ballarat Rebels (VIC)

"David's from North Ballarat after finishing school at Caulfield Grammar. He's 195cm, a versatile player who kicks the ball well, he's got good speed and can play either end of the ground. He was the one I thought really made our draft, still being available at 35. His psych profile was outstanding, and he's just a terrific kid from Ararat."

Selection No.44: Matt Dea
DOB: 13/10/91, Height: 186cm, Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: Ballarat Clarendon College /North Ballarat Rebels (VIC)

"Matt is a Mildura boy, who was captain of the Victorian U18 Country basketball side - he's a little bit inexperienced in football terms, but we've watched him play a significant number of times. He's a left-footer with terrific athleticism and speed. He played a few games for the Rebels towards the end of the year."

Selection No.51: Troy Taylor
DOB: 12/09/91, Height: 189cm, Weight: 77kg
Recruited from: South Alice Springs/NT Thunder (NT)

"Troy's an indigenous boy from the NT - 189cm and a very gifted player. He relocated to Alice Springs and played a few games with the senior Northern Territory Thunder side towards the end of the year. He had a fantastic carnival in the middle of the year."

Selection No.67: Jeromey Webberley
Age: 21, Height: 181cm, Weight: 74kg
Recruited from: Clarence (TAS)

"Jeromey Webberley is a little bit older - he played in a premiership with Clarence this year, in fact he kicked the winning goal from 53m on the run. He's a rebounding defender who kicks the ball very well so he fitted our kicking profile. "

Selection No.71: Ben Nason
DOB: 03/06/91, Height: 179cm, Weight: 73kg
Recruited from: Central Districts (SA)

"Again, we were looking for players who kicked the footy well, and we were really impressed with Ben over the course of the year. His foot skills are outstanding. He moved from Port Adelaide to Central Districts and played senior footy with the Bulldogs so we're excited about the skill level that Ben has, despite being pick seven for us."

I agree tony. I heard about half of his interview and he seemed really pleased to me.

I am glad he didn't individualise too much - these kids are gong to have enough pressure via expectation on them by supporters without having to live up to "sweeping statements of praise" by our recruiting manager

torch: your comment about Hardwick & cameron must have told him to "back off' - I think is a way off the mark. What the draft has proven is the recruiting team led by Jackson was given a "brief" to find players who have decent foot skills and based on that they seem to have done their job.

I think FJ was genuinely surprised that and rapted to have got Astbury at 35 & Taylor at 51.

I think why some got such impression is that shwass  (how do spell his effing name) tried to get him to individualise and he hesitated while trying to avoid  doing so. I fully agree that he shouldnt have individualised.

Just as idea of the sort of fool questions he asked. He said to Lyon along the lines. Lube Ball ended up at collingwood with pick 30, you must feel that justifies your stance on him?

thanks to Con65 - a very accurate summary  :thumbsup

Saves me typing  ;D

We had young Ben Griffiths on our table. Impressive young bloke

I must have missed the bit about Cotch

Although the week before at the Hafey Club function Hardwick, said that Cotch was on a modified program again. He asked Campbell which was it "his muscles are too big for his tendons or the other way around?" It just means they have to watch what he does as he's body is still developing (same thing they said about him last pre-season.

Dimma also said that they would not be rushing him. There are no more short cuts at Richmond and if that means Cotchin misses games so be it.... Dimma reckons Cotchin could be an elite of the competition
