Richmond set to kick on next year
Jay Clark | Sunday Herald Sun December 06, 2009

NEW Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has delivered on a promise to recruit players with excellent kicking skills in his first draft in charge.

To avoid previous draft failures, the Tigers' beefed-up recruiting team this year developed a formula to deeply analyse the kicking abilities of the top-100 national draft prospects.

It is believed players who failed to meet a standard devised by key football staff were overlooked, regardless of other outstanding characteristics, in the annual lottery.

The recruiting mantra is a key weapon in Hardwick's plan to dramatically improve the Tigers' field kicking, after averaging 65 per cent efficiency last season, ranked 15th in the AFL (above West Coast).

Richmond recruiting chief Francis Jackson would not elaborate on the kicking policy but was nonetheless delighted with the foot skills of the seven players chosen.

In particular, forward Troy Taylor shone, gliding through traffic with silky evasiveness and precise skill in the club's first open training session on Friday.

Jackson told club connections there were four players picked in the first round of the national draft who didn't meet the club's new kicking standards.

Hard-nut Koby Stevens, one of the surprise draft sliders eventually taken by West Coast at pick 23, is believed to have ticked every box except the Tigers' kicking requirement and was therefore overlooked at pick 19.

Hardwick's taste for hard work has been passed on to the playing group which began training as early as 6am for dawn swims at Brighton Beach last week.

Hey Jack, looks like they might have made some changes to the template they used back in your day?

Looks like the FJ knockers were right - he has done nothing and changed nothing since he took over.  Funny how he delivers exactly what is asked of him by the football department and if they ask for the wrong type it's Jackson's fault.  Here he appears to have (again) delivered exactly what has been asked of him.  I suppose if he gets this group right it will be a result of Hardwick's great vision .......................... and Jackson's fault if not.   :-\

Smokey: Further to this at Club80 they mentioned something about the data on the potential draftees that's always been available from Champion Data. FJ and the other bloke mentioned that some those figures actually do not record kicking data correctly eg how kicks to position and or unmanned teammates are recorded. The Club used the tapes etc but used a different formula

Based on training we still have the usual suspects who miss lead-up targets by foot so it's obviously going to take another draft or two to weed out the dud kicks. So maybe the title of that story should have been instead Richmond set to kick on in 2012.

Hardwick is making them do 3 hour long training sessions. Makes a bit of sense too as actual games last 3 hours in total.

Not sure why we would release publicly the names of kids and why we overlooked them though even after the draft. Don't give any kid at another club motivation to prove you wrong.

interesting this article.

players have an 100% efficiency kicking it 10 metres away which is useless!

There is no direct quote from the Club in the article naming players it over looked. So I don't think you can blame the club on that one.

Was 1 player mentioned at Club80 last week? Yep and people have decided to post it on the net

I think you may find the media have (as they sometimes do) used the internet to get the name

No doubt the media get their info from the net because the net does the work for them but IMO the Club really shouldn't have mentioned any names of the kids they overlooked and why they were overlooked at a public club forum where these comments can easily get out. With our recruiting history I would shut our gob if I was the Club  :-\.

Who were the players supposedly named?
Only one apparently - Koby Stevens - who was picked up by the Eagles at 23.

yep the player l was told they were going to take & changed thier mind before the draft.
This will be one of their mistakes as Stevens is a great stopper & will be a player like Worsfold
funny enough Worsfold was shocked to get him & can now mold him into a top liner like he was as a backline player
Koby's kicking is not as bad as the media says

Agree Con. Struturally we needed to add a big power key forward. Mids are easier to find.
