Hartley Moves On
portadelaidefc.com.au
Tue 15 December, 2009
THE recent Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts were the last with the Power for the club’s National Recruiting Manager Blair Hartley.
Hartley, 30, will step down from the position next month to take up a different role at Richmond. The Melbourne-based Hartley was with the Power for five years.
Hartley says it’s been a tough decision.
“This has been a tough call for me and one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” said Hartley.
“I’m very grateful for all the opportunities Port Adelaide has given me.
“I’ve learned so much and worked with so many great people, but it’s time for me to step back from the travel and take the next step in my career path.
“I’ve had a fantastic relationship with Mark Williams, Peter Rohde and all the coaching staff, as well as with my right-hand man Geoff Parker. They have been a joy to work with.”
Port Adelaide Football Operations Manager Peter Rohde says Hartley has been a valuable part of the Port Adelaide Football Club since arriving from Essendon.
“Blair has been a terrific asset in his time at Port Adelaide, he’s overseen three very successful drafts for us and above all is a quality person,” Rohde said.
“The travel demands on Blair have been very time-consuming, and it’s quite understandable that he’s looking to spend less time travelling and more time in Melbourne.
“Although we’re disappointed that Blair is moving on, we wish him all the best with Richmond.”

You would think that Hardwick had a bit of inside knowledge on this guy, especially to be bringing him on as a match analyst rather than in recruiting.
-
very interesting indeed. They kept this one schtum.

Maybe Jackstar has lost his "sauce" at the club, he has been very quiet.
:thumbsup ;)

blair is an absolute gun operator
along with lade, hardwick and lepa quite a talented football department is being assembled
Next year when we change the fitness staff, and the facilities are ready for use, we really will be well on our way

Blair in the Tigers’ lair
richmondfc.com.au
By Tony Greenberg | Wed 16 December, 2009
Richmond has appointed Blair Hartley as its Opposition and List Analyst.
Hartley, 30, spent five years with Port Adelaide, the last three as the Power’s National Recruiting Manager, while based in Melbourne. Previous to that, he worked with Essendon in opposition analysis.
He is highly regarded within the football industry and the Tigers are delighted to have secured his services.
“Blair is the final piece in the new structure of our football department,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron.
“He has worked in opposition analysis before, plus he’s been a national recruiting manager, so he has a sound feel for both sides and is well-equipped to handle this new role at the Club.
“Having someone of Blair’s calibre, as a full-time opposition and list analyst, will put us in a really good position to handle the changing landscape of talent acquisition from within other AFL clubs.
“He’ll be looking at talent acquisition from existing club lists, in conjunction with his role as opposition analyst.”

That seems a little strange to me. If a coaches contract is up after five years, i would think the fitness peoples contract shoud marry in with the coaches. It seems a logical way to work?? Or am i missing something??

Fitness staff are usually employed independently of the coaching group - that is, by the football dept (Football Manager responsibility) so they will come and go at different times to a coaching regime. That's not to say the coach can't identify someone he wants at the club and the club chase that person if they see fit, or have some input into these employment decisions, but it prevents 'dynasties' of power and control from working against the best interests of the club. Just like the recruiters etc are employed independently - they have a job to do for the club as a whole, taking into account the bigger or longer term picture - something we all know doesn't work with many coaches who have a very vested interest in the 'now'.
-
should have just sacked the lot of them and paid them out, our list is at a crucial stage where they need all the good advice they can get to physically mature a grow to the best of their ability. Our current staff have shown they have nfi and we will likely be treading water in terms of conditioning for another year :-[

Not disagreeing but you must consider who was the driver for the level and type of conditioning last season - was it driven by the conditioning staff or were they merely following orders? Maybe the coach(es) wanted a certain outcome that was not real clever in hindsight. Just a possibility.

Actually know Blair very well from his days at Windy Hill.
Will fir in well at punt road.
Likeable young bloke who aint there for his ego.
Would be very close to Hardwick ;)

Just on the fitness / conditioning staff, wouldn't they be under direction of the coach? so if the coach says beef em up, they work on the weights , if the coach says get their endurance up and so forth. They know how to do it, they are following directions from the coaching staff so its like having doctors, you tell em the probs and they fix it.. sacking em all is like sacking doctors, they all follow the same sets of practices for fixing the same problems

thats right
expect an improvement this year under Dimma, more weight gain, more power.
Unless they improve a heap in 2010 though, I reckon there will be a clean out at the end 2010

Excellent appointment, looks like CC has finally got the budget to shape the football department as per the blueprint.
Agree that a refreshed fitness department is in order for 2011 as this is the next key link between off-field & on-field to improve.

Power outage rolls on
By Craig Hutchison
Sun 20 Dec 2009, Page S24
PORT Adelaide has suffered another shock loss of personnel with recruiting chief Blair Hartley jumping ship.
Hartley has accepted a role at Richmond as head of opposition and list analysis.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has looked to the Power to secure talent on and off the field as he prepares for his first year in charge.
Hartley, 30, spent five seasons with Port Adelaide and called it quits after overseeing the club's pre-season and rookie drafting on Tuesday.
He joins player Mitch Farmer and assistant coach Brendon Lade as ex-Power men to join the Tigers.

Questions that were anwered. dont know why the names came up twice when copied and pasted, but cbf fixing it
[Comment From Raczimes Raczimes: ]
What was the reasoning being the Collins Trade?
A: I knew this question would be coming, we understood that we had uncontracted players targetted leading into the trade period, and also had a focus on keeping our picks in the draft. We completed a detailed analysis of our playing list and felt we needed to continue to build our midfield depth in particular, our size, capacity and flexibility
With the changes to the interchange rules, all these factors became paramount. At no stage did we place ANdy on the table, but when his name was raised by Carlton, after long consideration we felt this would be a fair and reasonable trade. It has ended with a win win, for both parties with Andrew ending up with an extended deal at Carlton after only having one year remaining on his contract at RFC. It also allowed us to go into the final days of trade week with a focus on the Bachar Houli trade
Comment From Shane Shane: ]
Hi Blair, personal question first up, how did you come to be at Richmond?
A:I was national recruiting manager at Port Adelaide, and was approached by Damian after he was appointed at Richmond
[Comment From Lisa Lisa: ]
Great job for your first trade week with the Tigers Blair! Is there anyone that you targetted that we missed out on? Whether through someone else getting them or them re-signing
A:Thanks Lisa! Trade Week requires a lot of planning, including meeting with player managers to discuss potential targets there were many options but we were always limited by players resigning at other clubs
[Comment From collo collo: ]
what position do you see shaun grigg playing next year?
A: We see Shaun playing as a bigger bodied inside midfielder with flexibility to be able to play on taller opposition on ballers, this also enables the likes of Cotchin, Martin, Foley to win more outside ball and provide us with greater flexibility
[Comment From Simon Simon: ]
Blair can you let us know the type of players that we are going to be looking for with our earlier picks in the draft
A: That is Francis Jackson's job, he is the national recruiting manager and his brief is to cover underaged talent for the National Draft
[Comment From RFC@Bigfooty RFC@Bigfooty: ]
Hey Blair, like what the club has done by bringing you in as an oppo analyst etc, and happy with the Grigg signature but don't understand the Houli attraction what do you see in him?
A:Bachar offers inside outside run and also a beautiful kick forward of centre, he has also shown the ability to play down back through the midfield and up forward.
[Comment From Chris Chris: ]
What does your role involve both on a week to week basis during the season and in a long term strategy sense?
A:I present to the players on our upcoming opponents strengths and weaknesses and areas of exposure. This also enables me to get a good handle on each clubs playing list throughout the course of the year. The long term strategy in relation to my role revolves around free agency and getting us extra prepared for this time.
[Comment From Max Max: ]
will we be targetting the best available player with our first pick in the national draft, or recruiting for a particular need?
A: I have always been a big believer in drafting for talent and trading for need so I would be saying we would be going for the best player
[Comment From Roar Metre Roar Metre: ]
Do you see David Astbury as our CHB in 2011?
A:David had a great first year and was a great pick by Francis and the recruiting team, he offers us great flexibility as he can play both forward and back. I know Damian is keen to give him a good run down back and see how he develops over time, at the moment it looks like he has a bright future
[Comment From Jayden Jayden: ]
Im still wondering, will the Tambling trade come back and bit us in the end? Like the Rodan trade we would welcome him back know doubt.
A:RIchard approaches us at the end of the regular season and mentioned that he might be looking for a change. After a long deliberation we agreed that we would like to facilitate a trade for RIchard. By gaining the end of 1st round selection compo pick, (Bock) from Adelaide it gives us great flexibility leading into the intro of GC/GWS, Giving us the potential to have two top20 selections in 2012+ and we can also trade this pick to any team over the next 4 seasons. We also obtained Adelaides 3rd round which would have offered us some protection, had Essendon had decided to take our 3rd round selection we had offered
[Comment From Dylan Dylan: ]
If RFC attain Brad Miller, do you see him playing many games next year? Or will it be purely as insurance if Reiwoldt or any other of our big guys go down?
A:We will only be looking at Brad in the rookie draft, as a mature aged rookie selection. Brad has expressed an interest in coaching and given the reliance we have on JRiewoldt it would offer us some back up if he goes down. We dont want to throw Ben Griffiths in too early given he is coming off two shoulder reconstructions. He is a fantastic character and our GM of Footy Craig Cameron has a strong relationship with Brad
[Comment From Atts Atts: ]
Hi Blair, Whats was the issue with not being able to get Houli & is there any truth in the rumours about Foley being on the market and the Tigers looking at Brad Miller?
A:I can assure you 100% that Nathan Foley was never on the market.
[Comment From Daz64 Daz64: ]
Hi Blair, can you tell me why Richmond didn't go harder at securing Sherman from Brisbane?
A: Initially we showed strong interest in Justin but both Sydney and the Bulldogs placed contract offers to him that we felt were overpriced and unwilling to match, given he was in and out of the Brisbane side late in 2010.
[Comment From matt matt: ]
other than brad miller, do you plan to target any other mature age recruits?
A:We had a strong focus on developing our list with youth, by adding Grigg and Houli to our mix we will now have Jack Riewoldt, Shane Edwards Daniel Connors all from the 2006 draft. When you look at the Geelong and Hawthorn premierships, they were built on strong draft periods and I feel that this will set us up well for the future
[Comment From Justin Justin: ]
DO you see us acquiring Houli through the nationall draft or the PSD?
A: We are exploring all of our options in relation to Bachar. It is great that Bachar has commited to us and we will look at both the National and PSD and decide over the coming days in what will be our best option in relation to securing his services
[Comment From Shane Shane: ]
Where does Will Thursfield stand moving forward, will he give 110% because by the sounds of it he isnt 100% happy at the club
A: We looked to facilitate a trade for Will but unfortunately there werent any interested parties. I spoke to WIll every day of the trade week and he understands that it is a business and he is now 100% committed to the Tigers and looking forward to 2011
[Comment From Chara Chara: ]
G'day blair. What about Posty? Lead up forward or key defender? Once he's settled and knows where he's playing, I think you'll see him really come on.
Posty is a late developer and really showed some solid form towards the end of 2010, as a mobile second ruck option. GIven his ability to mark the ball and read the play he might be used in different areas of the ground in 2011. With the change in the interchange rules playing two ruckman might be a thing of the past and this is where Jayden might find his spot. He has been in at the club everyday and looking forward to a strong 2011.
[Comment From Simon K Simon K: ]
Is a players attitude and off field behaviour becoming more prevelent in your selection? It appears we are recruiting better people than in the past i.e. less prone to mislead other members of the playing group. I hope this is the case.
A: Damian's philosophy is very culture driven and the recruiting team go to great lengths to ensure we are recruiting those that are 100% committed to the cause. That will always be a key focus area for us.
[Comment From Darren Darren: ]
Our rucks I feel are raw and under developed, is there any chance we would look at Rob Campbell to coach and shore up our ruck division until the others mature?
A:People forget Angus Graham is only 23 years old and we want to continue to invest time in to Ty Vickery. Andrew Browne also came on in leaps and bounds in 2010. It is easy to rule out a ruckman early in their career when you need to recognise that they take time. Mark Jamar was on the verge of being delisted last year and the next year he is All-Australian. I feel we need to continue to invest in our ruck stocks .
[Comment From steve steve: ]
Hi Blair, there are a few rumours floating around about us and a cloke! Are you able to enlighten us on whether we are looking?
A: We were all surprised by what came out about Cloke yesterday and I'm sure it will be settled with Collingwood in the coming weeks. We will continue to investigate all possible outcomes for the pre-season draft.
[Comment From Shane Shane: ]
Was Andrew Collins on the table before trade week or was that suggested by Carlton
A: No Andrew was not on the table, he was raised by Carlton and after long deliberation we decided it would be a fair and reasonable trade. It is never easy but we have to do everything in our power to improve our list. It has worked out well for Andrew as he has ended up with an extended contract, when he may have found it difficult to break into our team in 2011.
[Comment From Mark Mark: ]
Do you have much input with recruiting of juniors given your past experience at Port?
A: Francis and I work well together but his brief is to focus on the National Draft and if I can be of any assistance I will look to help out. But having seen him hard at work I can tell you all he has it 100% covered
-
Good to see the clubs being transparent about everything.
-
me thinks blair may have been doing a bit of ctrl c ctrl v from a pre-prepared
still, nice that he took the time to do it
-
Intersting the bit about Post being used as a possible 2nd ruckman with the new interchange rules. Thought he showed a little bit in that position towards the end of the season and would love to see him fulfill some of his potential.
-
I don't mind if there were a few dorothy dixes thrown in and answers prepared. It's better to read decent replies to questions in these chats than the usual one liners telling us stuff we already know. Good on the RFC and Blair for taking the time to do it.
By what Blair said about how Collins would struggle to break into the side next year, it is pretty clear the Club saw Collo as surplus so the decision to get him to be part of the Grigg trade mustn't have been that difficult one from the Club's p.o.v.
-

Agree MT. The club obviously think we have won out of the deal, even if some of us supporters think we could have got more.

Unsung hero helping rebuild Richmond from the bottom
Mark Stevens
From: Herald Sun
July 03, 2011 8:54PM
YOU probably haven't heard of Blair Hartley, for Richmond hardly shouts his name from the roof the Jack Dyer Stand.
But Hartley, the silent "poacher", is a key player in the Tigers' revival.
When the club was on the bottom last year and being compared to Fitzroy at its worst, Hartley started work with a brief to scour opposition lists in search of "opportunities".
Hartley had Bachar Houli and Shaun Grigg on his hit-list last year and nabbed them both.
It is not difficult to predict the targets on Hartley's whiteboard this year.
You might find the first 10 are 197cm or above. The Tigers need a gorilla down back, but most of all they need a ruckman. The ruck run-down might feature the following names: Hamish McIntosh (North Melbourne), Mitch Clark (Brisbane), Shaun Hampson (Carlton), Jackson Trengove (Port Adelaide), Max Gawn (Melbourne), Dawson Simpson (Geelong) ... and maybe, at a pinch, Mark Blake (Geelong).
More names may have been added in the past 24 hours given the smashing the Tigers suffered against Carlton on Saturday.
The Tigers, hobbled by the early loss of Ben Griffiths to injury, crumbled at the centre clearances.
They won it for the first time out of the centre 22 minutes into the second term and finished down 22-9 in the key stat. In clearances around the ground, it was 53-31.
Carlton scored 15.8 (98) from stoppages - the second biggest tally of the season - and Richmond just 5.5 (35) from the same source.
Overall this season, Richmond ranks 16th for hitout differential against its direct opponent, 16th for hitouts to advantage differential and 17th for scores from clearances differential.
The Tigers are so clean with their ball use on the burst, but are having their pants pulled down in close at key ruck contests. They have won the hitout count just twice this season. Tyrone Vickery was recruited as a ruckman, but doesn't possess the engine to play the role. Now, he is settled as a forward. Andrew Browne is a workhorse via the rookie draft. Angus Graham, another rookie elevation, has stalled.
The best way to judge a ruckman's influence at centre bounces is using the "clearance difference" stat and it is a sad story for the Tigers this year. Vickery has the best record (-2) in terms of clearances won and lost when he takes the centre bounce. Trouble is, he has been there only 69 times. Browne has attacked 139 centre bounces for a -18 record. Graham is -32 from 230 centre bounces. They are last on the list of regular ruckmen for the stat. To put that into context, Carlton's Robbie Warnock is +37, North Melbourne's Todd Goldstein - the beanpole who has surged ahead of McIntosh - is +28.
McIntosh is in contract at Arden St until the end of 2013 and was shocked when the Roos put him up for trade at the end of 2008. But at 25, he is the perfect fit for Tigerland. It is a luxury to get McIntosh, an All-Australian squad nominee in 2007 and 2009, as insurance.
Would the Tigers be prepared to give up a first-round draft pick for him? Would North consider it?
That man Hartley must at least be tempted.

Browne is the worst i have seen at afl level, actually at any senior level.
-
Ben Marsh wasn't much chop and Gus is obviously rated highly if he's playing magoos. I miss the big Staff running around.
-
Ben Marsh :lol
stuffing shoot me now
The best out of contract ruck in the world at the moment is Luey
why isn't he on the list?
-
McIntosh is only 25?
Need to get that deal done then.
-
He'll be 26 in about a week
-
Browne is the worst i have seen at afl level, actually at any senior level.
I would have to agree. I actually thought Gus was but there is no way in this world that anyone with 2 eyes can say Browne is of AFL standard.
It is bordering on comical watching him walk around with his hands on hips after he runs a whopping 5 metres.
For me he is the same if not worse than Adam Pattision. At least Patto used to kick the occasional goal
-
We should have done a deal for a ruckman in the last couple of years.
Come trade time this October, teams are going to try and rape us when it comes to any deal involving a ruckman.
If McIntosh is fit then he's the one i'd go for, but the Kangas are going to want our first round pick.
Geelong will probably be expecting the compo pick we have banked for Mark Blake!!
-

I doubt they could demand that, they haven't played him all year, at most you would get him is the PSD.
(Not that I want him near our club!)
-
Blake would be an improvement on what we have now, is equally useless around the ground but better at ruckwork.

lol....A pineapple on a stick would be an improvement on what we have now :lol
-
if the only ruckman our club can come up with at the end of this year is Mark Blake then they should all resign, turn off the lights and close up shop. And Im being serious!
-
Blake is out of contract and is rubbish would give up 4th round at best.
McIntosh being a 2nd string ruckman and a bit of keeness from the lad to come to Punt Road would help to stretch the roos to want a 2nd rounder or our Tambling compo pick.
What do the Roos need? They have a ripper list. Could maybe deal with another backman. 2nd rounder + McGuane or Thusrfield.

McIntosh for Foley.

Good one ! and true..:lol
Regarding the article above. Probably not the best week to be bragging about Hartley securing Grigg and Houli. Both were sh*thouse and are soft as.
-
Blake is an absolute spud, but he is still better than Browne and Graham.
-
Be careful what u wish for
-

Absolutely Dooks. Blake = NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
If we can't get anyone else though, Blake v Browne v Graham, I'd take Blake.
-
what the stuff is the point at replacing one spud with another?
do you people want an extra scapegoat or do you just wish the club to make more stupid recruiting decisions so you can criticise them down the track?
Mark blake? for stuff sake
-
what the eff is the point at replacing one spud with another?
Because he actually can ruck and at the moment we are getting slaughtered in there.
-
Gotta be honest folks I haven't seen him play so maybe someone can enlighten me but this Griffin from Freo might be worth a squizz. Apparently he's playing really well but they have the Sandi Monster

rather use the draft and at least pick up some kid who can ruck with a future
blake = trent knobel
wont have to trade for blake though, he'll be delisted and will be sitting knees together in the PSD
-
yeah being slightly less slaughtered in the ruck is still getting slaughtered in the ruck
-
dont get too carried away.
Grigg is the worst kick in the comp :banghead

Dont know if he is the worst but my view of last years recruiting of Grigg and Houli is that its a very very average outcome for us. If Richmond is to improve the standard of player brought to Punt Rd by Hartley has to improve greatly. Last years effort is about a 4/10 for me.

Prefer Hartley over Miller and Wallace! :P
He targeted a couple of guys and got them cheap.
Miller and Wallace targeted McMahon and were going to give pick 35, when that got used on Morton, they 'had' to use pick 19 because they promised the Dogs we'd take McMahon!!!
-
Hartley has nothing to do with Miller etc. Hartley can only be judged on what he brings to punt road and at the moment he only has 2 average footballers to his list.
-
At minimal cost though.
They were also very keen on Sherman, in the past we would have given away a high pick for him, this time around he was asking too much so they said eff off.
I do agree with you though Ramps, Houli and Griggs aren't anything special so far.
-

Yeh I dunno. Maybe they are good operators but snaring key footy dept recruiting people who presided over Melbourne and Port's lists over recent years doesn't fill me with much confidence..... and sort that bloody hairdo out Cameron ;D
-
Apart from his braind fade yesterday in the 3rd Houli has been very good, for what he cost us
Grigg - is the problem because his kicking is woeful and I thought our recruiting these days was about kicking ability :P
-
I think to label that as a brainfade is a bit unfair.
he was put under pressure by a poor pass, corralled against the boundry he looked up and saw nothing so tried to gain time to find an option and slipped over.

Agree had nothing up the Southern Stand wing and tried to turn away from Crameri got caught out. Indicative of where we were as a team at that time of the match and what was in store for the final quarter.

I rate Houli as highly as Knighta does so I'm biased but I reckon any half decent player would've done better in that situation.
Wasn't just that either. He doesn't seem to know what to do with the pill when he's getting tackled. Panicks , falls over and hands it to the opposition

Basher has played some bloody good football for us this year. Don't hang him because he was sold a bad pass and given no backup, it was made worse coz we were getting spanked. He has been pretty slick, his kicks are usually on the tit and he can send em a kilometre. He usually keeps a calm head under pressure and I havn't seen him balk once.

Helbig ran to his poor kick which was good and Houli should have given the handball back to him and didn't.

Also only played ~40 senior games. Still a baby and still learning. Has improved heaps already this year under our coaches development.

One of Blair Hartley's tasks presumably will be to find late developers in the state leagues who can make the transition successfully to AFL level...
Ready-made VFL players for the AFL draft
Sam Landsberger
From: Herald Sun
July 19, 2011
SAM LANDSBERGER assesses the top 10 VFL prospects for the national draft.
AHMED SAAD
Northern Bullants
Position: Small forward; AGE: 21; HEIGHT: 180cm; WEIGHT: 75kg
Similar to: Eddie Betts
In 27 games Saad has become one of the VFL’s elite. With impeccable balance, burst of pace, strong hands and a knack of finding goals he is hot on Kevin Sheedy’s watch list.
Coach Darren Harris: “He’s one that has to be looked at because we’ve seen the effect of small forwards and every club needs them. He needed to improve getting outside 50 and applying pressure and he’s doing that.”
NATHAN BATSANIS
Port Melbourne
Position: Wing; AGE: 23; HEIGHT: 181cm; WEIGHT: 79kg
Similar to: Courtenay Dempsey
The nephew of Collingwood great Peter Daicos spent a year at Port Adelaide but was curtailed by a leg injury. Batsanis has raised the bar this year and turned into a key link-up player.
Coach Gary Ayres: “He has improved his decision making and ball use, which is important when you get it 20-25 times, and he’s a two-way runner.”
SAM GIBSON
Box Hill
Position: Midfielder; AGE: 25; HEIGHT: 184cm; WEIGHT: 82kg
Similar to: Farren Ray
The clock is ticking, but the Hawks captain tops the disposal chart each week and would slot into most AFL midfields as an old-fashioned tough onballer.
Coach Damian Carroll: “If a club wants a guy to go straight in, there wouldn’t be too many ahead of Sam. He’s so consistent with his workrate.”
BRAD MANGAN
Werribee
Position: Key position; AGE: 20; HEIGHT: 190cm; WEIGHT: 95kg
Similar to: Max Rooke
He’s played only 13 games, but AFL clubs are taking a shine to his bull-like aggression, pace off the mark and endurance.
Coach Paul Satterley says: “We think he’s going to appeal to clubs because he’s one of the quickest on our list and he’s starting to play with real physicality and he can play at either end.”
DAVID MIRRA
Box Hill
Position: Half-back; AGE: 20; HEIGHT: 186cm; WEIGHT: 86kg
Similar to: Sam Fisher
Won last year’s Box Hill reserves best-and-fairest. He can play on a range of forwards and offers good drive from half-back.
Coach Carroll says: “He’s done a good apprenticeship and hasn’t looked back this year. He can repel attacks, he’s done a good job on a powerful type like Lynden Dunn and he can play on smalls.”
TIM MOHR
Casey Scorpions
Position: Key defender; AGE: 22; HEIGHT: 195cm; WEIGHT: 98kg
Similar to: Tom Williams
Mohr combines strength and size with a splash of speed. Can pinch-hit in the ruck and is renowned for demolishing opposition attacks and then taking the game on.
Coach Brad Gotch: “He can play on a medium-tall to a really tall. When he’s on, he marks the ball and then takes off and can pump it 60-70m.”
MATTHEW O'DWYER
Werribee Tigers
Position: Half-back; AGE: 22; HEIGHT: 181cm; WEIGHT: 80kg
Similar to: Rhyce Shaw
Delisted after a lack of opportunities at Sydney last year, despite repeatedly racking up more than 50 possessions in the reserves. O’Dwyer is again proving too good for second-tier football with his pinpoint foot skills, dash and rebound from defence.
Coach Paul Satterley: “He’s got the ability to go at the same intensity from start to finish. He’s very creative and can find a lot of the footy.”
MICHAEL STOCKDALE
Casey Scorpions
Position: Back pocket; AGE: 20; HEIGHT: 178cm; WEIGHT: 77kg
Similar to: Jarrod Harbrow
The pint-sized defender’s ability to negate star forwards has risen this season. His dash and creativity are what excites clubs.
Coach Brad Gotch: “He’s done well to improve his one-on-ones, which were a query, because we already knew he's smart, he's quick, he reads the play well and is a good user of the ball.”
WILLIE WHEELER
Coburg Tigers
Position: Midfielder; AGE: 19; HEIGHT: 176cm; WEIGHT: 75kg
Similar to: Kieren Jack into Sam Mitchell
The nephew of former Bulldog Terry Wheeler shared the Murray best-and-fairest with North Melbourne's Shaun Atley last year and was stiff to miss at the rookie draft. Wheeler has explosive pace off the mark, is a contested-footy king and kicks goals.
Coach Adam Potter: “He’s the best I’ve seen come in from the TAC Cup and make an impact in my six years involved (in the VFL). He average 25 possessions, wins clearances and tackles well.”
MALCOLM LYNCH
Port Melbourne
Position: Midfielder; AGE: 23; HEIGHT: 178cm; WEIGHT: 70kg
Similar to: Stephen Hill
Injury cut short his AFL career at the Western Bulldogs. Finally fit, the silky playmaker has scintillating speed and has improved his clearance work.
Coach Ayres: “You tend to find the players with genuine leg speed are the ones getting drafted, so he’s on track.”
AND ONE MAKING A LATE RUN...
BRENDAN FEVOLA
Casey Scorpions
Position: Full-forward; AGE: 30; HEIGHT: 190cm; WEIGHT: 100kg
A bag of 11 goals on Sunday thrust Fev into the spotlight for the right reasons, but beating up on a weak opposition is unlikely to wow AFL clubs.
Coach Brad Gotch: “If he keeps improving, you just never know, but he’s got to keep improving. About a month ago he was improving and then he stagnated.”
THE OTHERS
Ollie Tate, Myles Sewell (both North Ballarat), Kris Pendlebury, Tom Sundberg (both Collingwood), Sean Tighe (Werribee), Myles Pitt, Shane Valenti (both Port Melbourne), Mark Baguley (Frankston), Ben Duscher and Tory Dickson (both Bendigo).

I am trying to get onto this chat but struth it's slow ;D
-
Question just asked about Caddy, did we go after him
Response:
BH: "We made an enquiry about Josh earlier in the week and continued contact with Gold Coast right throughout the trade period and was met with a consistent response that he wasn't on the table. He is contracted for the 2012 season so they had the right to keep him. We never felt Josh was going to be traded by Gold Coast. "
-
Sam:
Why did we let Morton go for so little?
BH:
Each club is required to make 3 changes to its list, and coming into the final day Mitch was going to be delisted if not traded. Sydney were the only club who showed interest in trading for Mitch and through the dealing with his management Paul Connors we came to an arrangement to trade for pick 79. While we would have liked more, we were happy to accommodate Mitch continuing his career after exploring all opportunities elsewhere.
P.S im not sam just thought many on here would be interested in hearing about Morton trade.

Comment From daj
BLAIR WHAT WAS THE THINKING BEHIND THE TRADING WITH GWS
We were aware that Port Adelaide were keen on Steven Morris and wanted to bid their 2nd round selection in the national draft as apart of the Father/Son bidding process. We would have been forced to match that offer with our 2nd round selection, pick 37 which we had committed to Adelaide as part of the Maric deal. After many meetings with GWS we were able to come to a deal of swapping pick 15 for pick 14 and get Steven in while keeping our second round selection.
Comment From Alio_89
Do we plan on activating the 2nd round compo for next years 'super' draft? or do we plan on holding it?
We have to decide in March of next year whether we want to activate the compensation pick. At this stage it looks like a bumper draft and it would be most likely that we would activate it giving us 3 picks inside the first 2 rounds of a strong draft.
Comment From Mark1
How deep in the draft will the tigers be going ?pick 79 seems pretty late.
We are still yet to determine how many picks we will have, as final list lodgement is not due until Mid-November.
Comment From Pat
Are we allowed to use the Krakoeur compo pick in this draft?
No, we are not. Only for future until 2015.
Comment From Gaz
There's been some talk amongst fans about Fev joining the team. Quite frankly, this makes me pretty nervous that you guys would even consider it. What are your thoughts on this and what is the possibility of it actually happening?
We have not considered Brendan as a part of our plans. We have not even contemplated it.
Comment From David
so much for being very active in the trade period Blair. We got Maric, a father son and a bunch high draft picks. dissapoiting tigers
We explored every opportunity with each club and made it a priority to improve our draft position in what we feel is a weak draft. You also need to take in to account that all clubs were extremely protective of their players (contract) given Western Sydney's uncontracted signing window. Given most clubs have made minimal changes to their list, and with free agency approaching we saw it as beneficial to retain our low picks and go in to next year in a strong position for free agency.
Comment From daj
BLAIR WHAT WAS THE THINKING BEHIND TRADING WITH THE SUNS FOR THAT PICK 26?
We held the END of first round selection linked to Adelaide (Nathan Bock). Gold Coast only planned to have 1 pick in the National Draft and improve their draft position by trading out their later picks to be left with 24 and 26 by 1.30pm today. They did not intend to use 26 and came to us with the offer of changing compensation picks, and giving us 26. We feel this puts us in a strong position for the National Draft having two first round picks, while still having 3 picks in the first 2 rounds of the 2012 National draft.
Comment From Dean
What is the situation now with Nason/Connors and McGuane/Thursfield? Did Richmond make a play for Gold Coast's Tom Nicholls?
We have been in consultation with all players that were up for trade and their management group. That will be sorted out in due course.
Comment From Steve
was mitch clark ever an option?
We spoke with Mitch's management earlier on in the year and we felt his asking price was high, with Free Agency approaching we wanted to ensure we were in a strong position for this period whilst keeping a hold of our picks for this year.
Comment From Francis
Would have liked more picks in this draft Blair- are you confident your boys will do the job?
Is this you Francis?
I'm very confident in our team, and he should be happy now he has 2 first round picks. No pressure.
Comment From Flawed
There was a lot of talk about Foley leaving and going to GWS. Was there any substance to this and nothing eventuated or was it on the tables
There was no substance to this at all, and was never on the table. Axel is highly regarded and contracted and a player of the future at Richmond.
Comment From Max
Is this year's draft poor, shallow or just even after 20-odd?
We spent a lot of time evaluating the draft, and feel it is weak after the first 30 selections. Which is why we were happy to trade pick 26 in from the Gold Coast today, while retaining our 3 selections in the first 2 rounds of the 2012 draft. Given the concessions afforded to GWS, the draft pool has been cut back significantly but I'm sure Francis will find some gems.
Comment From Jimmy
WHY NO BIG EFFORT FOR HAMISH McINTOSH. SEEMS STUPID FOR US TO TARGET MARIC SO FIERCELY AND YET NOT EVEN TRY FOR McINTOSH?
A players contract status significantly impacts upon your ability to come to a suitable trade with clubs. Given Hamish was contracted and a required at North Melbourne, it makes it very difficult to come up with a suitable trade. Particularly when we were intent on retaining our first selection in the National Draft.
Comment From aaron
were does luke mcgaune fit in now ... after being told hes not wanted.. if they can get a trade?
Luke is contracted for 2012 and we have been in constant contact with his management group throughout the entire trade period, unfortunately we werent able to facilitate a trade for Luke and he is more than happy to be a Tiger in 2012.
Comment From Elliot
If we held onto our compensation pick for next year it would have been pick 19, is that correct? Why would we not wait a year and use it in a draft with more talent instead of getting a lower selection in a weaker draft? I don't understand it...
It is important to understand that the end of first round compensation selection comes after first round priority selections both at the beginning and the end of first round, also behind first round and mid-first round compensation selections. Given 2012 is forecast as a strong draft, we feel this selection will be around the mid to late 20's range. The second round compensation selection we acquired from Gold Coast today is aligned to where Port Adelaide finish on the ladder, and still gives us an opportunity to pick 3 players in the first 2 rounds of the 2012 National Draft. In doing so, we were able to acquire a first round selection pick 26 in this draft, which we see as a good result for us. We can't confirm where Port Adelaide are going to finish, but still happy to walk away with 3 picks in the first 2 rounds of 2012, and 2 picks in the first round of the 2011 draft.

They could have, we only got through about 1/10th of the questions. We had 1500 in the chat, about 400 questions and only answered 20. As I've said before many times when it comes to chat, we don't ignore individuals, the person I'm sitting with (Brendon, Blair, whoever) simply looks at the questions and says let's answer that one.

For what its worth - Well done Blair Hartley for getting the best you can for the club. :clapping
So far, your scorecard is well and truly ahead of most clubs in the trading department - I would imagine you would be reasonably ( and justifiably so) proud of yourself :cheers
Hopefully FJ can now keep the ball rolling by picking up some good kids ( hidden treasures) in the draft.

Credit where credit's due...
From the Herald-Sun today...
Grigg was traded for Richmond's Andy Collins and has been a revelation for 18 months, highlighting that improvement by kicking three key goals against Sydney.
Maric has come up big in every game he has played, and Morris has cast off his earlier kicking jitters to star as a hard-nosed rebounder.
The Tigers gave up pick 37 for Maric, have watched Collins barely play at Carlton, and swapped Morris from GWS (where he was pre-listed) for a set of steak knives.
Meanwhile, cast-off Brad Miller (pick 28 in the 2011 rookie draft) has 13 goals as Jack Riewoldt's foil.
All four might have been cast as list-cloggers, but they have played key roles in the club's resurgence.

It's not luck that Blair is finding these players either. The sheer amount of statistics he creates and footage he watches is astronomical. Every trade decision is based on cold hard evidence. He is an amazing asset to the club. Dimma also deserves credit for head hunting him after working with him in the past. :thumbsup

Eye of Tiger for talent
Garry Lyon
The Age
June 9, 2012
PRO scouting has a decidedly American ring about it, but it is fast becoming one of the most critical components of an AFL club's infrastructure.
Put simply, pro scouting comes under the broad banner of recruiting and refers to the practice of monitoring the performances of opposition players in the hope of identifying talent that both fills a specific need at your club while also targeting those players who, for whatever reason, are being denied senior opportunities.
Right now, the poster boy for pro scouting is Richmond list analyser Blair Hartley. Having started his AFL journey at Essendon as a back-room operator and forward scout, he advanced to the position as head recruiter at Port Adelaide, all at the relatively tender age of 25.
Richmond then came calling, giving Hartley the imprimatur to forensically dissect the Tigers' list, identify the shortcomings and then scour the other [then] 16 clubs to determine whether the holes could be filled without paying a king's ransom or using prized first-round draft picks.
The extraordinary success of Ivan Maric has brought the role of the pro scout into sharp focus, and Hartley is quietly being hailed as having played one of the most pivotal roles in what appears to be Richmond's long overdue revival.
Maric's impact on the Tigers has been one of the stories of the year. For someone such as Hartley, it is the ultimate justification for the countless hours spent poring over playing lists, monitoring form in the lesser leagues and then setting about ''baiting the hook'' that eventually lands the big prize.
What makes the Maric coup so impressive is that the Tigers were virtually the only suitors for the former Adelaide big man. They got in early, sold the vision of where they were heading, convinced Ivan that he was vital to the plan and then landed him without paying an exorbitant price.
To add to Hartley's reputation, that had already delivered Bachar Houli and Shaun Grigg in the previous year, he called the name of 23-year-old Steven Morris at last year's draft.
While Morris had not previously been on any AFL list, his form at West Adelaide was enough to pique Hartley's interest. Combined with the fact that his father Kevin played 110 games with the Tigers, Hartley and his recruiters dedicated plenty of hours to watching him develop in the SANFL, and he has proven, again, to be an inspired choice.
All clubs have different recruiting structures and titles, but there is no doubt that the role of the pro scout continues to gain prominence.
If Hartley is the new young gun in this field, George Stone of the Sydney Swans, is the old master. The Swans have 12 players on their list from other AFL clubs, including one of the Brownlow Medal favourites, Josh Kennedy, key backmen Heath Grundy, Ted Richards and Martin Mattner, as well as Rhys Shaw and ruckman Shane Mumford.
The successful pro scouting mantra sticks to some basic but non-negotiable guidelines.
■ Identify need.
■Look at opposition players not getting opportunity at senior level.
■Don't try to cover every single opposition player.
■Must watch the players identified over a stuff period.
■Continuously monitor players who the club really liked at draft time but were not able to secure.
■Establish the contractual situation.
■Make contact with the player's manager and register interest, planting the seed of opportunity.
■Be prepared to walk away if the asking price from the opposition club is too high.
■Senior coach must be a believer and be prepared to give the player identified opportunity.
■Ensure you have the resources to carry out the above and employ the right people.
Richmond's success in the pro scouting ranks is testament to not only Hartley's abilities as a talent identifier, but also to football manager Craig Cameron's ability and willingness to invest in this critically important aspect of the game. Along with recruiting manager Francis Jackson, they are very well placed, as the new challenge of free agency adds a twist to the landscape next year.
The mid-season break plays out over the next few weeks, but for the list management personnel at club land, this is a critical time of the year.
For the pro scouters, their attention will turn to those clubs that have started the season well and have a relatively healthy playing list. For them, this scenario reeks of opportunity, for it means there will be talented players, in the 20-25 age bracket, being denied the chance to play senior AFL football.
For me, the Adelaide list would be the one I turned my attention to. They are having an outstanding season, which has made it very hard for some players with three, four or five years' experience under their belt, to break into the team.
I would expect inquiries will be made of Chris Knights, Shaun McKernan, Brad Symes, Andy Otten and Brodie Martin. All of these players have been in the system for a minimum of three years and have all, at some stage, demonstrated their capabilities to perform at the level.
Injury has also played its role to some degree, but the progress of these players back at SANFL level will have been very closely monitored, with particular attention paid when, and if, they return to AFL ranks.
The Eagles' list will also come under scrutiny, and with their recent run of injuries, there will be several players who have been given senior games in recent weeks and will be of extreme interest to not just Eagles fans.
Brad Shepherd, Patrick McGinnity, Ashley Smith, Koby Stevens, Sam Butler, Tom Swift and the unlucky Mitch Brown are the sorts of players of whom opposition clubs will be asking the question.
Clubs would be attracted to the fact that they are in a strong and successful environment, have been extremely well prepared and coached and would be ready-made AFL players.
Attracting them away from the Eagles is an altogether different proposition, but it will not deter clubs from asking the question.
The Bombers' Scott Gumbleton will be on the discussion board at many clubs. Injury will be the major concern, but with 200-centimetre prodigy Joe Daniher arriving at the club at the end of the year, positions in a forward line of Michael Hurley, Stewart Crameri, Patrick Ryder and Daniher will be hard to come by.
The Cats' Shannon Byrnes appears to be squeezed out by the likes of Steven Motlop, Allen Christensen and Travis Varcoe. Surely he provides quality pace and small-forward talents to someone other than Geelong.
While pro scouting will continue to evolve, and we continue to celebrate and enjoy the success stories, not all clubs have had to go down that path to build their lists. A quick look at Geelong's group tells you there is not a single player on the senior list who has come from another AFL club.
It will be extremely interesting to see how Stephen Wells, one of the great recruiters, goes about regenerating this wonderful Geelong team. It is faced with the potential retirements of Scarlett, Enright, Corey, Wojcinski and Podsiadly in the next couple of years, to go with the recently departed Ling and Ottens.
Will Wells follow the emerging trend and look to the other 17 clubs lists, or will he continue to rely on his uncanny eye to pick the best talent available outside the AFL.
It will be fascinating to see. I suspect that with every game that big Ivan dominates, the inclination for clubs to turn to their pro scouts will become greater and greater.

But surely Garry isn't serious about Gumbleton?

And he was a mad tigers supporter when he was a kid. Wore Richos number on his back!
x2
Good for him but no. So any could who plays AFL and was a RFC fan lets get him to the club?
Nought dropped Edwards and he still can't get a game.
Crud spud dud mud.
-
Was a no.3 draft choice and KPP. Isn't enjoying his football so looks lazy. May be he wants to leave and is playing accordingly. Would free up big Griff to go forwards. Worth a look IMHO!

Advise you to go and reconsider the job that Blair Hartley actually performs for the club.
It is to find players who aren't getting a game at their present club but would improve the list at Richmond.
Think of players like Houli not getting a run at Essendon or Grigg not getting a run at Carlton or Maric not getting a run at Adelaide. All of them were getting overlooked by their clubs for players who virtually everybody outside those clubs thought were duds.
Guess what? Hartley saw underdeveloped talent and gave them a chance. They are now regular players for Richmond. Would you seriously dispute that Maric, Houli and Grigg are not in our best 21?
Let Hartley do his job. Whoever Hartley gets for next year I think he has deserved our faith based on present result and Lyons article shows most others in the AFL agree, despite your idea that you know better ahead of Blair's choice.

Must br able steal a kid or two from gws / gc

I remember all the Hansen v Gumbleton hype in the media before they were drafted. The next Jackovic v Carey.
LMFAO

Wrong. That was the McGuane/Tom Williams draft.

Whilst you are totally right in what you say about Blair Redan and what some said about Ivan I was of the notion lets get Ivan as long as it does not cost us the earth for him. To supplement what I am saying anybody was better than Graham and Browne as it was well known we had the worst ruck division in the league.
However with regards to Lachie I just feel with the number of talls we have currently in our stocks and with all due respect to Blair we actually have some talls that can play and assuming we delist blokes like Derickx or Post at the end of the year all we would be doing with Lachie is replacing a tall with a tall.
All it is, is merely a hope that in two seasons Hansen turns out better than Post.
Furthermore given Adelaide's recruiting where Maric came from compared to Nought in the last half a dozen years and I'm confident than Hansen is a dud and someone who the rigors of AFL is not cut out for. Another Richard Tambling IMHO.
If we get him whilst I will be unhappy and will consider his selection a waste of a pick I won't be as manic as others in their opposition and should he turn out to be serviceable will more than happy wear it on here but I feel that this kid just can't it. I may also add that if we get him or anybody else does and he does well it may be a result of the Nought system and Brad Scott as coach that brought him down and that's a slur on them and why they are so pathetic.
I'm happy to say he's a dud though.

I saw something in lachie a few years ago, don't know what's happened the past 18 months... Is an athletic stuff, capable of going with buddy, is very strong overhead, has a good character but always had question marks on his kicking. I wouldn't be adverse to picking him up for bugger all ala houli and Grigg
-
Caddy to Essington is a given.
The veruca's will have a fit if they don't get him this time.
-
Was told he will re-sign or end up at Melbourne via the PSD
Was also told Essendon can go stuff themselves

I would be going after Montagna from the Saints or Blease from Melbourne
Reckon Lachie Hansen is a monty to join the Tigers next year also for a 3rd rounder. Not sure what his contract status is but he might even be delisted
-
Unless its for a star, I can't see us offering any picks for players, particularly in this years uncompromised strong draft.
Would take Lachie on a rookie spot or if we got him for next to nothing, doesn't warrant anything more at the moment.

CONTRACT discussions between Collingwood and Ben Reid have slowed as the impasse with Travis Cloke - an issue that is having an impact on the player and club - continues.
Reid, an All-Australian centre half-back, is out of contract this year and it has been speculated he could be the one player squeezed out or, more likely, open to a big-money offer from a rival club as the Magpies deal with a tight salary cap.

im shocked this thread is only 5 pages long when such an important aspect to getting ahead is being discussed.
good post by the way. now lets see. if hansen is say a 10% improvement on mcguane then it is list improvement nothing wrong with it as long as it is done cheaply. i call it value adding and we dont do enough of it.
if hansen doesnt kick on as we hope what do we lose. nothing we gain a 10% better player than the one we cut and we look to go thru the process again looking for a cheap better player than hansen.
sometimes you may have to go thru the process 3 or 4 times. value adding as you go before you actually get a real good player.
imo the real key point in doing this is you stay in the nd with good picks giving yourself the best possible crack at good kids.
just my opinion but i think we should have someone like hartley whos sole job is to go around the country and look at state league players like morris as well. who are not on an afl list or no longer on one. to me there are so so many state league players you can draft who would speed up the value adding process.
-

I think Hartley actually does this at the moment. Where else would he have seen Maric and Morris if they were both his picks?
However the position is going to become even more important next year when we are looking at the mature players to set up our VFL team.
Jackson has said he is happy with his resources in junior recruiting so add to the resources under Hartley for mature players.
Note: VFL players required for 2014 will be matures from AFL, VFL, suburban and country leagues and also undrafted TAC kids.
Claw, I think the search should be extended well beyond state leagues considering that top players have been recruited as matures below state league.

by all means i agree with that.
but dont think we have the resources just yet to cover all minor leagues woud be great if we could.
most if not all good young talent is channelled toward elite programs and state leagues. the majority only really have one pathway other than tac and thats state league. lets adequately cover these leagues first before we do anything else.
-
Well said redan
-
We have part time scouts in other states. They watch and then forward reports on the "possibles/probables" to FJ and the recruiting dept who then get tapes have a look at highlighted players and if they think the players are worth a closer look the full time recruiters go and have a closer look
And just on this
I think Hartley actually does this at the moment. Where else would he have seen Maric and Morris if they were both his picks?
See above.
Clubs can basically get vision of any player playing in the 2nd teir comps Australia wide these days as well as the kids in the Under 18
Hartley's job is not that as a recruiter as such (not sure he travels interstate much at all to watch players) his main job is to analyse every other club in the comps list and find players who may suit the needs of the RFC give this info to the recruiters and they go and watch.
As stated in the original article of this thread
"Richmond then came calling, giving Hartley the imprimatur to forensically dissect the Tigers' list, identify the shortcomings and then scour the other [then] 16 clubs to determine whether the holes could be filled without paying a king's ransom or using prized first-round draft picks.
BTW the artilce also says Hartley called out Steve Morris' name at the draft, this isn't correct; FJ does all the name calling at the draft.
I remember FJ saying he had gone to Adelaide to watch Morris on a number of occasions over 2 year period

I would have said over cooked but now
he is burnt to a crisp more to the point
Just on players to look at,regarding a key back
What about Stephen Gilham (will be 28 going into 2013)?
Has struggled this year coming back from his knee reco but that is quite the norm for reco's these days
But I reckon he is still a good solid defender and I doubt he'd cost much?
thoughts?

some young ruckmen at other clubs who fit into hartleys role.
tom hickey gc
daniel gorringe gc
both have smith in front of them could add tom nicholls as well. it about opportunity and at least one will be missing out.
dawson simpson ge.
dont know the go with this bloke but hes a monster and showed a bit in the few games hes played.
scott lycett wce.
with cox and nic nat he could be waiting for awhile. cox could go another 3 yrs.

talking of north anyone rate cam pederson he is killing them in the vfl apparently but is not getting a game because of tarrant hansen and petrie.
aaron black is another not getting a game i was highly impressed with him as a junior had a bit of injury would love for us to have a crack at him.
still on north anyone like levi greenwood big bodied inside mid seems to struggle to get a regular game again hes had his injury issues as well.
some mids who i liked as juniors and hoped we would get a crack at em.
mitch hallahan at hawthorn finding it very hard to break into their midfield. koby stevens at wce by all reports he is going home only concern i have with him is kicking. daniel farmer at collingwood is another really liked him but for what ever reason has done little at collingwood.
two state league players no make that 3 from the vfl i would for us to at least rookie, sam dwyer, tom sundberg brad mirra.
two from the wafl tom lee and max duffy. claremont has a big tall atm who really impressed me but cant for the life of me think of his name.
geez i hope we are having a good look in these areas.
does anyone like the look of jesse white at sydney he has some real talent and for whatever reason just has not fulfilled it hes no longer getting a game at sydney and we sure could do with a big genuine ruck forward to use in tandem with maric.
sorry getting carried away and rambling i know the long posts pee people off. just some fodder for the thought processes.

Ok, went searching for the answer as none of us appeared to be on top of it. Here is the list of activated picks for the upcoming 2012 draft:
FIVE clubs have strengthened their position in this year's NAB AFL Draft by activating compensation picks before Tuesday's deadline.
The Western Bulldogs, Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne, the Brisbane Lions and Richmond will all have extra picks in the November draft, which club recruiters are rating as the strongest in years.
The AFL awarded the compensation picks to clubs who lost uncontracted players to new teams Gold Coast and the Giants.
The Bulldogs have activated the round one pick they received for Callan Ward, which will fall immediately after the club's 2012 round one pick, plus the round three selection they received for Sam Reid.
Melbourne has activated both selections - a round one and a mid-round one - it received for Tom Scully's defection to the Giants.
The mid-round one selection will be taken between the picks of this year's ninth and eighth-placed clubs.
The Lions will have an extra selection at the end of the first round after activating the pick they received for Michael Rischitelli's departure to the Suns.
Richmond has opted to use the round two selection it received in a trade from Port Adelaide. The Power received the pick as compensation for Nathan Krakouer.
And Greater Western Sydney will use the round one pick it received in a trade from Adelaide. The Crows got the pick as compensation for the loss of now Giants co-captain Phil Davis.
Greater Western Sydney, Geelong, Gold Coast and West Coast all still hold compensation picks that they have decided not to use this year.
They can be activated in any draft up until 2014 for Suns compensation picks, or 2015 for Giants compensation picks.

Definitely closer than driving from Adelaide. Still think he is getting way too much publicity, is a good footballer, not great.

I'll take Coach's word on him, but would be stoked just to get Houli kind of output if it were to eventuate. The more I look at the types we have been luring from other clubs at no cost or loss the more I see it as just recruiting that core in the 22-26 age bracket that we should have already owned had our 2005-2009 drafting been better. If Thomas can seamlessly come in and out of the side and not be detrimental to our structures then I'm all for it and happy to add some depth.
Chaplin, Thomas, Boak, Primus, broke, I wonder if McCarthy is wishing he just told Port to get stuffed yet.
-
Oh my stuffing god. Thomas is a monkey. Russel is a monkey. Chaplin is soft and inconsistent and who is the other spud we're chasing? Lachie Hansen?
"Why doesn't Craig Cameron get credit for anything" :lol
gee whiz. ;D
Hanson is a budding Flower about to burst into Full Bloom......All we need to do is get him on the list add some blood and bone Bingo, we have a GUN :shh

Pretty sure McCarthy told them his preference was Richmond, they were going to take him anyway and I guess he is the type of guy that was just grateful to get another shot. Would have come in handy as he is the exact type of 'depth' player I believe we need. Miles in front of a King/Webberley/White/Maric . . .

He could have declined a medical at port though and played hardball. His loss now though as we have moved on. :thumbsup

at least mccarthy was only going to be PSD pick.
Sherman, if we were actually interested, was going to cost picks and a decent wage. At least we dropped out once the bidding got above what they thought he was worth.
Same thing will happen with cloke.

Oh my stuffing god. Thomas is a monkey. Russel is a monkey. Chaplin is soft and inconsistent and who is the other spud we're chasing? Lachie Hansen?
"Why doesn't Craig Cameron get credit for anything" :lol
gee whiz. ;D
Hanson is a budding Flower about to burst into Full Bloom......All we need to do is get him on the list add some blood and bone Bingo, we have a GUN :shh
if i was targeting a tall from north it would be pederson or black. they arent getting a game unlike hansen.
Yep and them not getting a game is the reason they probably aren't worth targeting over Hansen

pederson has been tearing it up in the vfl the only thing stopping him getting a game has been norths talls all going alright.
black has been injury riddled to date but every time hes got a game hes done alright.
hartleys brief is not to target established players from other clubs at huge cost, but players who for what ever reason are not getting a regular game but have the attributes to add to our team and wont cost the earth..the idea is to still stay in the early rounds of the nd and find players who can add to our team. of course hansen would add to our team but he is now going to cost a fortune and he is not likely to want to leave having finally established himself. 12 monmths too late imo.
this is why i say black and pedeson would be good targets.
north wont be trading petrie tarrant or hansen but they may be forced to let others go on the cheap that fit into hartleys brief.

Another BF rumour:
"C4 posted on their board that we have Myke Cook former Adelaide Crows Rookie on our 'RADAR'
Playing currently for the zebras & Represented victoria against Tasmania this year
184cm 83kg inside midfielder that played 14 games for the Crows"

Bloody hell, what's the attraction to Sandy?! I never thought Cook stood out too much and I see a bit of Sandy since I'm just around the corner and workmate plays there.
-
Sure beats recruiting soft HBF like webberley or soft HFF like maric, and midgets like Contin & Nason
MYKE hopefully works better than MYKI
-
Chris knights, Jesse white and Pears

Workmate reckons a few clubs are looking at Cook. Played most of his juniors with him reckons he's a champ bloke. He usually plays wing but can go inside. Also said he'd have anyone at Richmond for pace. Thinks we should also look at Adam Cockie who I agree with. Bloke is tough as nails. The other Sandy player we were looking at I dont think we'll go after if we get Chaplin.

I don't know Sandy at all. Seen them play once. Can you tell us who it is or is it hush hush?

me too always thought him a decent player wanted him in the 09 draft with pick 71 or rookie listed him. would do the same this yr.
personally with our first pick if we use it in the nd id go for jake stringer.he could be the next goddard or even pavlich.
would really like to find a way to get a pick around 20 25. use pick 9 1st rnd, 20 to 25 traded for, 30 2nd rnd, 35 cp.
4 in the top 35 would be great. from there we can target mature players and use free agency.
4 picks in the top 35 would allow us to maybe take a player like tom lee at 35 im absolutely certain he would be in the mix before 48 and probably would not be available to us there.or perhaps the extra pick would allow us to take a kpd like tanner smith at 25 or 30 and punt on lee being there later.
three of
chaplin fa
hartigan rookie
lee nd
would shore up the defensive shortcomings and still allow us to target the mids we need early in the draft
-
Agree with most of that Claw.
Q: why do you have our concession pick around 35? It will be lower than our second round pick as it comes straight after ports second rounder. Should be closer to the 25 mark you are looking for.
If we could use our first two picks on mids (I like Ben kennedy), pick up Chaplin and Cloke free agency, grab Lee and a ruck in the ND, Hartigan PSD, and top up with some mature mids like Cook and Cockie in the rookie draft, plus maybe another indigenous small I'd be moonwalking across the nullabor to yours with a few cases :cheers
Might even stop by FJ's...

Cockie has been around the block a few times hasnt he, wc and now struggling at vfl, id be looking elswhere ::)
-

Only inflicted about 5 concussions this year :thumbsup ;D He played in a few flags at Subi and was only covering for Shuey at WC when he (Shuey) was injured since he was only a rookie. He definitely isn't struggling, and hasn't been around the block. You could say the same for Cook, and Cook is a bit older. Cockie and Cook are probably the only two main stays in the Sandy midfield since all the St Kilda spuds keep taking up the positions in the firsts and it's why quite a few Sandy players have requested to be released. Everyone knows since the writing is on the wall for everyone to see, but the VFL is so rooted that if/when AFL clubs break away from their affiliations the competition will pretty much dissolve.

Goddard and Pav don't kick like Richo last time I watched Freo or Saints.
-
are we using our blingers pick in the next draft?
-
i think we traded that. we now have a compo pick off port which we are using.
-
Anyone like Tyson Goldsack as a kpp (Goldsack is uncontracted)? Anyone reckon Maverick Weller can play? Goldsack is a very capable player and if Miller can do a job at CHF for 2 years for us then maybe Goldsack could as well. Weller came with a big junior reputation. Get Chaplin via free Agency and pick up say Ben Kennedy with our 1st round pick and this is what you get:
Dylan Grimes Troy Chaplin Steve Morris
Chris Newman Alex Rance Brandon Ellis
Shaun Grigg Trent Cotchin Maverick Weller
Reece Conca Tyson Goldsack Dustin Martin
Jake King Jack Riewoldt Shane Edwards
Ivan Maric Shane Tuck Brett Deledio
Ben Kennedy Ben Griffiths Jake Batchelor Tyrone Vickery
Matt Dea (em) Brett O'Hanlon (em) Bachar Houli (em)
Personally I think this is a pretty good side.
-
I was keen on Goldsack last year and I'm pretty sure he re-signed.
-
im sure I recently saw his name listed with afew other of collingwoods uncontracted players and how they were all going to fit in with the salary cap considering clokes situation.
-
Maybe he only signed a one year last year because I know he was uncontracted last year along with Macaffer and McCarthy.
-
I think anyway lol. I just remember talking about him on dumb footy last year.
-
Cockie has been around the block a few times hasnt he, wc and now struggling at vfl, id be looking elswhere ::)
really hard at it finds the ball but his kicking was a real concern when he was over here.

yep we are close on the process a little different on the players themselves.not too different though.
yeah for some reason put the cp after our second rounder.
my understanding is there are 6 first rnd and mid first rnd picks being activated. effectively making the first rnd 24 picks.
if port and tiges finish where they are now their second rounder is pick 29 our cp is 30 and our second rounder would be 32.
would dearly love another pick around 20-25 cant see how we can trade into that sort of pick though. maybe some one can come up with a realistic scenario.
imo we must get 4 mids this draft/trade period. first two picks should go onto mids.
ben kennedy is just too small for me i would never use a top 10 pick on such a small player regardless of how much he shows and he shows a fair bit and i could be really wrong, nothing new there.
in being highly optimistic and hoping we got pick 20 somehow. id be dreaming if we got stringer 10 and nick vlastuin 20 atkins at 30 and depending which way we were to go lee or tanner smith 32. three mids and either a 22 yo kpp or 18 yo kpd.
would be over the moon with that scenario.
from there a young ruckman late nd, moloney or some other suitable mature mid psd, chaplin free agency, 19yo duffy late nd hes a kid still, hartigan and maybe a mature mid or two like dwyer sundberg etc on the rookie list. that would be a balance of 6 or 7 18yo taken with mainly decent picks , plus 5 or 6 older types aged 19 thru to moloney the oldest at 29 all dirt cheap.
again these are just some of the players i like there are others and needless to say the club may not like any of them. theres a few west aussie kids and mature types i really like but will keep it to myself for now.
important point is i sure would hope the club is planning to go thru a similar type process regardless of who the players are we end up with.
we have already lost/cut 5 players to achieve the above it would mean 8 from the list proper another 5 to go to go, and 4 rookies another one or two its not a big ask when you consider the quality of the list.
we would be well and truly looking after our long term with quality. we would fix two areas of the list in one go.
in doing the above two we also manage to look to the now and give ourselves a chance to push on to finals next yr with slightly older players who can improve our team and depth immediately.
-

I wouldn't go as far to say it's a real concern but definitely far from polished. Honestly I'm just a fan because he's entertaining and I love how hard he smashes blokes when I watch him at the Zebras. Would prefer Cook at Richmond if I really had to choose though.
-
Credit to Blair Hartley that his 'hidden gems' finished 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th in the B&F tonight. He's earning his salary. Hopefully his good recruiting strike rate continues over this offseason.

firstly let me say - I agree with you. It was worth a shot. In the NAB cup games he looked quite good. Nice long kicks to advantage in the fwd line. Good vision. Decent execution.
then the real stuff and he looked average to poor.
But to answer your question - Sam Gibson for north rookie pick 63 - Was an out and out star in my Dream Team. Came in when Swan copped his 2 weeks suspension and held his spot in my DT Grand Final (Round 23) and got me a lazy 130 points (and teh win). :cheers

Just as a further point on this, how does the next round of delistings operate in relation to Free Agency?
As I understand it, a club can pick up any delisted player without going to the draft.
Therefore surely all delistings must be completed before the Free Agency period closes in a week or is that where a second Free Agency period comes into play?
Is very relevant to this thread considering we are talking PSD and Rookies of the past who now would be free agents.
Edit: Just checked the AFL site.
5/10 - 26/10 = Trade Period
31/10 = List 1 1/11 - 13/11 = FA (1) for delisted 13/11 = Draft Nominations
15/11 = List 2 22/11 = National Draft 23/11 - 28/11 = FA (2) for delisted
29/11 = List 3 11/12 = PSD, Rookie Drafts
Interesting. Still a bit to go for Blair yet. Would seem we've picked over the current crop and await the next couple of deliveries after trades are done.
Also makes a bit more sense why our delistings were really preliminary. Big chance of more to come both in and out.
-
Hartley has done more for this football club than anyone I can think of in a long time. Recruiting 6 AFL ready players for a keg of beer to a club thats been in the wilderness for 30 years. Remarkable effort. If only our other recruiters did a tenth as well.
A. Maric was probably forced upon him by Hardwick. He loves midgets.

Richmond is holding a live web chat tomorrow with the Club’s Opposition and List Analyst, Blair Hartley, as part of Tiger Trade Central, brought to you by Bingle Car Insurance.
The 30-minute web chat is your chance to ask one the Club’s key recruiters about the free agency and trade periods.
Hartley has been integral to recruiting talent to Richmond, including Shaun Grigg, Ivan Maric, Steve Morris, and more recently, Troy Chaplin and Chris Knights.
The web chat will take place from midday tomorrow, at the Tiger Trade Central news hub.

You don't reckon the admin on the chat will select the ones Hartley wants to answer? I'd be very surprised if he is asked that question, I'm sure plenty will ask but not necessarily have him answer it.
I'll be happy to be wrong though, as I agree, would be very interesting to see his response :thumbsup

Comment From David
Are we still a chance to get Dom Tyson?
As was well publicised, we were interested in trading for Dom. Unfortunately Dom still has one year to run on his contract at GWS, and he has decided to play out his contract with them. We will continue to look at all avenues to improve our list, both in the short and long term.
Comment From Adam
Hi Blair. did we ever have any interest in getting involved in the mini-draft, or with pick 9, were we not really in the GWS thinking?
We did explore that option with GWS, but unfortunately with only pick 9 we weren't able to make any progress there.
Comment From Skippa
Hi Blair, congrats on a fantastic few years of recruiting, will you be targeting Ben Jacobs during trade week?
We have not spoken to Ben's management at all in regards to a potential move.
Comment From Josh
Blair are we looking to be active this week? Or have we done most of our work through free agency?
We were pleased to acquire Chris Knights and Troy Chaplin in the free agency period, while keeping our picks in the National Draft, including three picks inside the top 32.
We have been planning for the trade period for a long time, and it is important that we continue to make calculated decisions. It is easy to get caught up in the rush that occurs but we won’t be making any knee jerk decisions just to get involved.
We will be looking to improve our draft position (#9, #31, #33 & #50) and may have some back end deals that are yet to play out. In regards to trading players in (both in and out of contract from other clubs) we would have made our intentions clear long ago.
It is important that we consider the future and constantly plan ahead. We are not going to bring someone in at the cost of better deal/ option in the coming years. Salary Cap management and pre-payment is also another consideration.
Comment From victiger
also has there been any thought to maybe a deal with gws too swap 9 for 12 and 13?
I like your thinking.
Comment From bitzo
Are we looking at another forward to help jack?
We really missed Tyrone last year, we see real improvement coming from Elton and Griffiths, but it is an area that we constantly monitor.
Comment From Sam Cohen
It's been too quiet on the Richmond front. Can't help but feel something big is coming. Are you able to give us anything?
We did most of our work during the first week of Free Agency, those players we would normally have to trade for.
Comment From Conrad
hi guys, Blair. Long one sorry - on our rucks, how do you see 2013 playing out? Mostly Ivan, with Vickery in support? Or will one of the other big guys get a chance, be rotated forward, etc? Any talls being looked at trade wise?
Ivan was great last year, and we really missed Tyrone in the back half of the year. We see him developing in the ruck in years to come. However we are constantly monitoring ruck stocks around the country.
Comment From jeff
GWS will soon field an entire team of first round draft picks with Gold coast taking pretty much anything left in the early part of the draft. How are other teams going to compete?
No doubt GWS and Gold Coast have a lot of the young talent in the country recently, it's up to clubs like us now to find the best available players through avenues such as Free Agency, which is why we placed such an important emphasis on it.
Comment From Jarred
Blair has the club made it a priority to recruit left-footers? There's been a fair few in recent seasons, Grigg, Houli, Chaplin, Knights, O'Hanlon
It certainly hasnt been a focus for us, it just happens that they are all left footers and it makes for a nice story.
-
Comment From Simon
What did you like about Troy Chaplin?
We are constantly assessing where we are ranked in all areas across the competition. One of the areas that needed improvement was our defence. Based on our numbers, we had the youngest defence in the competition, with an average age of 23, and the second-least games experience per player in our back half.
Troy, at 26 and with 140 games of experience, will add significantly to our back half. He will complement the likes of Alex Rance, Dylan Grimes and Ben Griffiths. He has the ability to play on both talls and medium sized players, and will add leadership and experience in defence. He badly wants to succeed and feel he will thrive in our environment.
He has the ability to read the ball while also defend and was AFL #2 in 2011 for possession gains. We feel that this can become a real area of strength for the Richmond backline with Rance and Grimes also proficient in this area. He is really looking forward to working with our coaches in particular Justin Leppitsch – hopefully to take his game to a new level.
Comment From TT
With the massive attention Trade Month now gets with SEN, TWR, Twitter, stuff, and forums, has this changed how you manage discussions? Do you have to work harder to keep things on the QT, or do you just concede its impossible to keep everything in house now?
No doubt it's becoming bigger and bigger, and while I understand the interest there are a lot of information that is important we keep in-house.
Comment From 10 Flags
Troy Chaplin has supposedly got a bone on bone issue in his knee. Are you concerned by it?
We obviously did a full medical on Troy’s knee and our doctors are very confident he will be able to play out his career in a strong manner. He was again checked on the other day and we are really happy with his progress. He will have a slow start to the preseason and the hardest thing will be holding him back.
He has shown good durability throughout his career, playing an average of 20 games per year over the past 5 years.
Comment From Elgreedo
Was Knights recruited to add some midfield depth, which many believe we lack, or was it mainly as a forward. If not, where do you see our midfield improvement coming from?
We have been interested in Chris for a long time, making initial contact with his management in 2010. While having an injury-interrupted 2010 season, he has played a lot of football over the last two years.
We tracked him very closely at SANFL level this year, where he averaged 26 disposals and a goal per game. He has some attributes that are attractive to us. He is a long, powerful left foot kick, and he naturally finds the ball in the midfield and coming from half forward, and importantly, he is a goalkicker.
At 187cms and 86kgs, he also offers a bigger body across half forward, which we identified as an area of need. It also allows the likes of Cotchin, Martin and Deledio that extra rotation through the midfield, giving them a little bit more time to rest forward where we feel that can have an impact on the scoreboard.
We have a full understanding of his medical history, and are very confident with his level of dedication and his ability to play within our structure.
Comment From Gary
What has happened to our compensation pick for R Tanbling
We made a trade with Gold Coast last year
Richard Tambling end of 1st round compensation -> Gold Coast
Pick 26 2011 Draft (Todd Elton) + 2nd round comp (Bock) this year is now pick 31.
-
Looks like we might be trying pick 9 for 12 and 13. He also just said we'll be using 4 picks in the draft.
12, 13, 31, 33 would be delicious
Do it, Tiges :shh®
-
Comment From Coops
I notice that you mentioned Ben Griffiths in the backline. Are we going to persist with that or can we see him going forward next season?
Ben has some very attractive attributes and has been in the gym everyday over the pre-season, as we saw last year he made some inroads as a defender but we see him being able to play forward as well. His development scope is untapped and I'm sure he will find his long-term spot over the next 12 months.
Comment From Ben
How many picks are we likely to have in the draft?
At this stage it looks like we will have 4 picks in the National Draft.
Comment From Steve
How long have you been planning for free agency?
We have been planning for free agency for a long period of time, rating and analysing all club lists extensively. Free agency brings a whole new mindset to player movement, and the club has been great in sending me overseas to study all different forms of free agency in different sports. Some of the work the guys do in the NFL is phenomenal and it has been great to spend time with them while still staying in regular contact.
Francis Jackson has done a great job with recruiting through the national and rookie drafts, and through the trade process we have been able to address some of our needs.
Free agency offers another avenue to upgrade the talent on your list, while protecting your draft position.
We have not only planned for this year, but for the years ahead.
Alright guys, that's it for Blair.
Thanks for joining us today.

Remember, Frawley and Riewoldt were pick 12 and 13 in a draft once. :clapping :shh

Will be interesting to see if he puts the Tyson to Richmond thing to bed.
That question won't get through :rollin
Yeah it will
You don't reckon the admin on the chat will select the ones Hartley wants to answer? I'd be very surprised if he is asked that question, I'm sure plenty will ask but not necessarily have him answer it.
I'll be happy to be wrong though, as I agree, would be very interesting to see his response :thumbsup
If we've shut the door on getting him the question will get through.
Looks like it did, I stand corrected. :thumbsup

Woah top question Flags :shh I knew he had a knee concern but didn't know it was bone on bone. Anyone know more about it or the nature? The RAAF sent me to an orthopaedic surgeon nearly 5 years ago to investigate a massive crunching in my right knee when it bends. Turns out it was due to 'banana legs' where my leg can ever so slightly hyper flex at the knee and it has caused the ligaments holding the patella to slacken off. It means the patella 'jiggles' in and out of the socket when bending and wears away the lubricating film between the bones. The injury is more prominent among bigger units like me and Chappy, and if it's a similar deal then rest assure it's an entirely manageable condition :cheers required special ligament stretching exercises and a focus on things like exercise bike and squats.

PS How dare you post my question on here without my signed permission. >:(

Don't we have Pick 29??? Blair didn't mention that pick?
-
Don't we have Pick 29??? Blair didn't mention that pick?
No but he mentioned 31 & 33 (formerly 29 & 31), the assumption in the AFL is with the compo picks still to be announced for FA movements that most clubs will drop back in the draft
-
Instead of recruiting crap that will only get the club to mid table and strand us in the middle of nowhere can you actually go and get some decent quality footballers PLEASE!
And by the way Moneyball is crap and doesnt work in the AFL
Thanks

There is not point from hard wick point of view to rebuild .
better off treading around 12-5th
Like a politician the long term future is of no importance. Only the short-mid term

Topping up for a tilt at the flag

Topping up for a tilt at the flag
we wont be making the 8 so I wouldnt be concerned about topping up for flag tilts if I was them.
-
We don't have the recruiting network of the bigger clubs.
This is plainly obvious as they are more willing to get older guys than youth in the draft.

We could win the flag from 8th !

While a number of people are targeting Dimma as coach and FJ as head recruiter, remember that Blair is the one that was/is meant to be overseeing the management of our list and the analysis/rating of every player in the AFL, state leagues and U18 levels. Only Dan Richardson would be above him within the footy dept.

Thank you for the update, so BH is the one - how long has he been in this role and what would Francis Jacksons role be?
Furthermore if Dan Richardson is the overall manager of Blair Hartley, how long has he been in that role?
Someone or something needs a massive boot and a huge cleanout and restructure is required.
Indolence and ignorance cannot be abided any longer.

Yet we have gone into meltdown after being embarressed by a side choc full of moneyball type recruits.
If you think money ball is crap, then you'd want to hope we never get Roos as coach.......

Garlett ...not really a really list clogger or injury prone .....maybe Newton & Pederson....who else? These blokes really comparable to our "moneyball" picks ? Only Garlett - a proven performer, albeit a flaky one- played on Friday night.
-
define a "moneyball" pick?
I think this, though is the important part you said
comparable to our "moneyball" picks
because if you dont take the right blokes, then no strategy will work, Richmond has shown since the introduction of the draft.
Again I ask the question, why did the so called moneyball stategy work sucessfully for Roos at Sydney if the strategy is flawed?
As its never been answered, I dont expect that to change, but it really is simple, because it comes down to implementation of it, the same as anything else.
It would be like using 10-15 years of our failed early draft picks to argue that using your early draft picks is flawed.
-
Fringe players, FA's, DFA's, mature types & state leaguers that cost you very little, either financially and/or in terms of players/picks, that you get to fill a role. You said we lost to a side that was "choc full of them".
I meant comparable to ours not just in terms of quality but how many they have and how much they rely on them/senior games they play and injury history. (f.e. can't really see any Chris Knights injury prone type that's been brought onto Melbourne's list.)
As for Sydney under Roos - Do you think they would have been as successful had they not also been benefitting from generous concessions from the AFL? Who played in their two GF's that you consider to be genuine moneyball picks?

Really, they would have been laughing when we traded for Hampson -a Blair Special
He may have got it right initially with Grigg but they fact that Blair in the past recommended a 3 year contract extension was not one of his greatest moments
He recommendation in 2013 that we target mature aged players in the draft over kids was a stellar one as well.
Yes he's had some hits but over the last few years more misses

Maybe in the circle of fools you move in but nowhere else.
Even putting aside the stupidity of the Hampson deal, Hartley wanted to take Trengove when a first year physio student knows it was ridiculous.
Jackson only catches the fish that jump in the boat, he can't even tie a hook on a line when he has to try and catch one.
Richardson is a nothing operator, Rance not in the top 10 paid players and allowed to walk as an unrestricted free agent. Hardwick's contract extended at a ridiculous stage twice.
If you want to sit in the corner and suck your thumb go right ahead Bojo, but don't pee down our backs and tell us it's raining.

Undoubtedly hasn't occurred to you but did you ever stop and think the issue isn't just Rance's contract, it's that our top 10 is full of blokes being paid massive overs which wastes our salary cap.
The salary cap we will need when Dan Richardson lands the big fish he has talked about every year for the past 3 and hasn't been able to get done.

Rances contract was most likely front ended and secondly when he signed the last one he wasn't AA, in fact I didn't have too much support when I was claiming him as one of the leagues best YOUNG defenders at the time :shh

Roos aplication of moneyball was basically that any pick after the first round was a low chance of becoming a decent player, so he was more than happy to trade those picks for players. He felt these picks were over rated buy the football world.
so any trade he made that involved 2nd round or later picks could be "Money Ball"
From the other night's game their older/lesser quality/delisted/low cost imports were
Labumba
Dawes
vince
garlett
cross
Ben newton
Michie
Vandenberg
8 out of 22, over a 1/3 of the team
when you start talking about getting players that are injury prone, is that not down to implementation?

Both
But definitely more of the former.
But on the latter He should not be doing any contracts IMHO and although they may be lesser lights he's involved in them getting done and I am not convinced it's the right way to go. Giving him that much control is the fault of the club
However, the Hampson deal was the clincher for me, worst trade we've ever done and through in they gave a 3 year makes it worse
-
Folks i need to ask this..In your opinions ,does he need to go because hes not good at his job,or is the club at fault because they've put him in a role beyond his capabilities?
Simply, talked the talk early on but hasn't walked the walk.
Failed to deliver any big names to Tigerland despite promising to do so.
Failed in recent times to solve our list deficiencies and address our list needs due to inactivity at this time of the year. Blind Freddy could see we've desperately needed quick, skillful small forwards and a decent back-up ruckman (not Hampson) since 2012;
Failed to trade out deficient players on our list who still have trade value as a means to bring in players that actually address our list deficiencies.
Paid overs for duds - like Hampson for pick 28 :scream.
This and last year's trade/FA period has hardly been inspiring :P.
The Club has a rating system out of 1000 for every player in the AFL as well as the draftees with 500 being your average decent AFL footballer. It's basically the sum of ratings of 10 categories each scored out of 100. How Blair could rate Hampson, who can't reliably perform basic skills such as kicking or marking, as equivalent to a decent mid-range second round pick #28, makes you query how the rankings are determined and Blair's ability to judge a footballer and make list management decisions.
-
Extra points if they play for Port or Carlton.
-
But on the other hand,
Club says we made finals 3 years in a row. That's an achievement and we must have stability
-

yesssss let it all out :clapping
3 years of talk and no action. Now not only do we have stigma of elimination final loss but according to outsiders we can't secure talent from outside even if this year's efforts were bad luck
-
But on the other hand,
Club says we made finals 3 years in a row. That's an achievement and we must have stability
Instead of current day Hawthorn, Geelong etc.... the club prefers to keep judging itself against 1976/83 -2012 RFC ...setting the bar really high there....
-
But on the other hand,
Club says we made finals 3 years in a row. That's an achievement and we must have stability
Unfortunately for us, those 3 final series in a row is a huge achievement compared to years of firing coaches and wallowing down the bottom......
Of course we need to get beyond that now, and it looks like the current group have one last year to show their worth. No excuses if we don't get a top 4 position. That's my minimum.
-

In form youngsters to be dropped for older, underdone hacks.
Cotchin and friends to go missing. Dimma to be slow on the moves.
Up at half time then run over the top.
Repeat times 2.
Hardwick gets 3 year contract deal.

Ralphy has partly nailed it, even he can see it :rollin
@RalphyHeraldSun: Tigers list manager Blair Hartley under pressure too over the Yarran deal. Got their man. Not a whiz-bang trade period but addressed needs
-
Hmmm...addressed the inside mid need by replacing Matt Arnot with another fringe player.....and considering we intend to play Yarran of half back - one position we have well covered - did we really address a need by getting him?
-

yeah we stopped him flogging us by kicking 4 goals or getting 40 touches on the hbf every round 1

So now we might beat them by 9 goals instead of 5......

This is part of the Yarran myth. He has had two good games in his last 10 against us.He has never had 30 possesions in a game yet alone 40. He has kicked 3 goals or more on just 9 occasions and his best haul is 4 twice, and never against us.
Yes his to good games was in rnd 1. My gripe remains he plays a couple of good games mixed with a couple of decent games and the rest are poo. When this bloke is poor hes freakin lousy.

Ijust realised michael Talia was traded to Sydney for pick 69 and a round four selection next year. FMd. Ithink tis will come back to bite everyone not just us.
I dont get it why is the club not going hard at one or two tall defenders. It is ludicrous.

Gun Gold Coast midfielder Dion Prestia will wait until the bye in mid-June before thinking about his next contract with the Suns.
After a frustrating 2015 where he was restricted to just eight games due to a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, the vice captain is very positive about the club's direction.
But time will give him a chance to make an informed decision about the Suns' future prospects before he comes out of contract at the end of 2016.
"We'll see how I'm going personally and see how the club is going and then consider it after that," Prestia told AFL.com.au.

1995 - So good we don't even need a coach.
2001 - Cherry ripe, no draft required.
2008 - Best 9th ever, locked n' loaded.
2015 - Just add cream and a bodyguard for the captain
"The Richmond Way" is to massively overrate the list.
-
And to do half ass rebuilds and top up
All with the flux marketing of stability

"The Richmond Way" is to massively overrate the list.
Hard to disagree
Actually I agree ;D
Hence why I blame Hartley for helluva lot. He rates our list, he rates those bought in
Enough said

Here we go again......
Without wanting to say too much, I know for a fact BH didn't have anything to do with a recent 2 year contract extension. So that would tell me that BH doesn't always get the final say. :shh

Not disputing what you know
Never said BH did all contracts
Have said many times Richardson does the big ones
I know of a fair few he's done. Not going to go into any details, respect people too much to do that
However, my biggest beef with him has always been and continues to be he recommends who we should trade for, which FAs to go after, who we should recontract and he's done a very poor job
In the last 3 years he's recommended Hampson, Hunt, Townsend, Moore A, to name 4. On the contract side he's rated Grigg, Houli, Ellis B, to name 3 for contract extensions.
He's done a stellar job the last 3 years.

All I know is BH didn't rate a player and they got a contract extension.
Like I have said before, I'm sure there is a panel of people that actually decide on every player that comes to our club. To blame him solely and to think that his decision is the only one everyone listens to is absurd.
These "moneyball" players that we have had come to the club are to fill holes in our list at the time. To think they are going to be the players to get us our next GF is ridiculous. Most are players that cannot get a regular game for their original club, but maybe can play a roll for ours. Most cost us nothing other than a poo draft pick that would be wasted anyway.
You use the draft to get your star players and most of your core group and I think most would agree we have failed in doing that since DH took over.
FJ has simply got to go.
-
Giving someone like Hampson 3 years was simply a stupid deal. Grigg &Houli served specific purposes when we first got them but that was 7 years ago. They aren't taking us to a flag so why the contract extensions? Rather keeping why hasn't Blair looked to upgrade
But having said ....
BT, think we will agree on one thing and that is a number of people need to go :thumbsup

I think you missed my point.
He isn't the only person who decides on who goes and who stays. Not even close.
Playing Grigg and Houli week in week out isn't his fault either.
If FJ had of done his job those decision would have been pretty easy for Dimma to make but because he didn't we are still seeing Grigg and Houli 7 years on like you said. Plus other duds like BEllis, Conca, Griffiths,.......
Anyway get rid of the whole bloody lot of them for all I care, they all seem negligent IMO.

Ah, Blair "I'm the list manager/analyst but we don't need a quality ruckman for 3 years" Hartley ::).
Then there's his system of rating every player in the AFL and TAC Cup out of 1000 and comparing this number to the value of draft picks to determine off-season trades. Hasn't that worked a treat.
-
Knew Blair when he was editing videos for the Bombers back 10 -15 years ago
How he got this far in football is beyond belief

So he is rating the TAC kids too. Must be the busiest guy on the planet.
I know it must be hard for some to comprehend but trading for ruckman isn't the only way to get a "quality" ruckman to our club. We have something like 7 ruckman on our list, two in which we have traded for of which one is Ivan and the other is a dud. That leaves 5 guys we have left up to FJ to draft. Not to mention all the others that have also been delsited. You do the math mightytiges.
Hasent that worked a treat.
I notice you, Jack or WP haven't commented on my previous post about BH not wanting to give a contract to one of our players but was obviously overruled. It may be that he isn't the only guy making decisions on our list. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Thinking 1 guy is making all the decisions on our list even for a badly run business like the RFC is crazy. Might be time to re-think that.

To be honest I think we have lost the forest for the trees. Too much reliance on statistics rather than having the ability to see a player and know instinctively that he is going to be a star or at least a solid AFL player.
I along with a lot of other supporters see the draftees each year and look at the same highlights on You Tube and come up with completely different views to BH. This can't be coincidence, I think he reads too much into stats, almost like trying to find a formula that makes you a millionnaire on the stock market.
Sometimes I think a good recruiter goes on gut instinct and without blowing my own trumpet there are a number of players the club has passed over in recent times that I personally would have recruited and have turned out to be good selections for their respective club. Sure you are going to have the odd hit and miss but we simply have too many misses and to me that means we need an urgent revamp in the recruiting department.

What has BH got to do with recruiting the kids!! It's FJ!!

If you ask me both have failed.
Sack the whole footy department and start again.
They've all failed.

Blair is involved heavily in the recruitment of kids.
He rates them and is involved in all the discussions leading up to the draft. He sits on the draft table when making those last second decisions too.
There are videos showing the recruiting team discussing the recruitment of C. Ellis and Blair features heavily in them just to prove the point.
They are all to blame. I'll give Luke Williams a little slack because he has not been there long and I heard he may have had a hand in spotting Chol.
-
Sack em all except the one responsible for Chol. May still be a miss but at least they had some balls

So FJ has himself and a team of recruiters and yet BH still has the final say? Is that right WP?
If so, the club is well and truly stuffed.

I hope Im wrong but I think both!

Interesting, I am the first to suggest our recruiting equal worse with Fremantle
Blair Harley, Francis Jackson and Richardson have made poor recruiting decisions as they have focused on safe bets that are outside smaller runners and C and D grade players who struggled to get a game at their own club but were expected to become A and B graders at Richmond
I believe we need an experienced recruiter with a proven track record to Manager recruiting and make football smart decisions
The others can have their stats and therories but decisions need football smarts. Neil Balme is one , Paul Roo's another that fit the bill along with a few other others from opposition clubs.

Well, did they get it right?
It would seem I was wrong about them being frogmarched out of the club.
I think kudos may be due.
Mind you I think Balmes and Caracellas influnce may have played a large part as well??

Are we supposed to forget Hamspud? Yarran?
He should've been sacked for the Spud decision alone.

I'm sure Hawthorn took a punt on an indigenous kid recently who's now behind bars .
Collingwood are questioning their decision to draft Mayne now
All clubs have their hamspuds

Yeah how about those dumb Hawthorn recruiters...what with only four flags since 2008 to show for their efforts...

Yeah how about those dumb Hawthorn recruiters...what with only four flags since 2008 to show for their efforts...
They've lived off their list management from 10 years ago and leveraged free agency off the back
of their success 7 years ago.
Let's see how their list management plays out over the next few years.

Yes and they did it beautifuly....no club should ever rest on their laurels but they're one that's arguably earnt the right to....and I for one certainly hope they do...preferably for at least three decades while we shyte out flags and gf appearances...
