SEN reporting Lovett is being investigated over an alleged sexual assault and he's been suspended indefinitely by the Saints

couldnt have happended to a nicer bloke.
This is why the Bombers have 16 flags and the Saints have one.
Master stroke by Knighter and if anyone thinks he is not the right man for the Bombers coaching gig they are kidding themselves.
Saints will never win a flag in our life time with those pathetic top ups
-
And this from a club that rejected Cousins 12 months earlier using the excuse they were concerned about bringing in a bad apple :whistle. Meanwhile Cuz has turned his life around since coming to Richmond.
Matty Knights must be breathing a sigh of relief every day.

i would say this.
If Lyon does not win a flag by end of 2011 he will be sent packing like many before him.
What he has done to that club since end of Sep was a big risk one which i think will lose him his job.
You cant be serious bringing this loser into the club who may i add is far worse of a fool than Fev then letting a club captain like Ball go for nothing.
What a joke of a club but then again it is Stkilda, what more did we expect??
-
If Lyon does not win a flag by end of 2011 he will be sent packing like many before him.
Yep Lyon has seen their window is closing (the Saints have been up since 2004) and has topped up chasing a flag. With so many of their best players now in their late 20s and even 30+ by the start of next season (King, Gardiner, Hayes, Milne, Baker) and by the look of it with not much quality youth coming in to replace them, it's now or never for the St Kilda. GC17's massive concessions and draft picks will make it very hard for current top clubs with little youth coming through to replenish their stocks. St Kilda appears to be one of those clubs approaching a cliff-edge. If they win a flag then their supporters won't care; but if they don't Linton St will implode lol.
-
Interesting that King and Gardiner are still there, mail is that either one or both were going to get the flick early in August.

Interesting that King and Gardiner are still there, mail is that either one or both were going to get the flick early in August.
They were after another ruckman during the trade/draft period and all they could find was Patto. I thought the rumour going around was either King or Gardiner was struggling big time with some injury? A knee? I know Lyon said oddly they wanted to cover the scenario of both older ruckmen going down leaving Kosi and young McEvoy to carry the ruck workload.

ST KILDA may have no choice but to axe troubled recruit Andrew Lovett, with claims some senior players are refusing to play alongside him.

what an idiot Lovett is. Cousins was banned for a year for "bringing the game into disrepute", when at least he was open about it and tried to do something about it. how Lovett has escaped being banned from playing football is beyond me!

Police poised to charge Essendon recruit Andrew Lovett with rape
By David Hastie
January 10, 2010
The AFL career of troubled St Kilda recruit Andrew Lovett, 27, looks all but over, with Victoria Police set to charge him this month over the alleged rape of a woman.

No surprise but rumour on the Saints forum is Lovett was given the flick last week by St Kilda.

Ross Lyon warned St Kilda players about poor behaviour
Sam Edmund
Herald Sun January 13, 2010
ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon warned his players about off-season behaviour only hours before Andrew Lovett allegedly raped a woman as she slept.
The Herald Sun can reveal Lyon conducted a lengthy meeting with the players at the end of a pre-season training camp on the Gold Coast just before Christmas, imploring them to behave over the holiday break and make the right decisions.
The revelations come as Victoria Police appears set to charge Lovett on summons in the coming weeks.
It is believed Lyon held aloft a copy of the Herald Sun front page from December 22, which detailed the embarrassing and damaging fallout from Carlton's Yarra River booze cruise.
He also presented an article on Newcastle Knights' rising NRL star Danny Wicks, whose career is in free-fall after being charged with drug offences, before the Saints boarded a flight back to Melbourne.
That night Lyon received a phone call informing him Lovett was being accused of raping a 23-year-old woman in a teammate's Port Melbourne apartment after a night out at Richmond pub Royal Saxon.
St Kilda acted swiftly to indefinitely suspend Lovett, but Lyon is so angered that it's believed he wants the 27-year-old banished from Moorabbin.
The Saints would not comment last night (Monday night).
It's believed some players have asked whether Lovett could be sent to play for VFL affiliate Sandringham as punishment until mid-year, but the majority of the squad no longer want to play alongside the former Bomber.
The general feeling is while he is the player they need, he is not the person they need in an era where club culture is paramount.

what are the others allowed to play then?
Edited: we are not allowed in anyway to metion or infer what may have happened in the past. In these situations we must stick to the facts as we understand them or it could cause OER some grief. Not saying it is fair, it is just the grey area of the law. Cheers WP & MT

Im just wondering if the St Kilda development at Seaford has anything to do with the new Police station being built in Carrum Downs only a couple of Kilometers away. :rollin

Essendon will be the ones laughing from this as they received a first round pick for this.
Echoing the sentiments of others on this forum St Kilda is a brothel club with 1 flag in 113 seasons. It is decisions like the appointment of players like these at clubs like St Kilds which reaffirm why they are so unsuccessful.

Herald-Sun has jumped on this this morning. Dumping a first round pick plus a good clubman for a guy with a known poor record just because he has speed and skill.
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/big-calls-may-haunt-saints/story-e6frf9jf-1225820991611
In further news the AFLPA is probing St Kilda's decision to indefinitely suspend troubled former Bomber Andrew Lovett.
AFLPA chief executive Matt Finnis told the Herald Sun he was examining the legality of the suspension in relation to the clauses of a standard AFL player contract.
"The AFLPA is currently liaising with all the relevant parties to ascertain the precise nature of the suspension and its relationship with the collective instruments which regulate the employment of AFL players," Finnis said.
"The AFLPA will continue to provide our support to Andrew Lovett, as he is entitled being a current member of the association. This necessarily involves ongoing dialogue with the various individuals and organisations involved."
Finnis would not be drawn on Lovett's future as an AFL player in the possible event he is charged and does not face court until 2011.
"It is inappropriate for the AFLPA to publicly speculate on how a particular player will be treated in the event he is the subject of a criminal charge when no such charge has been laid," he said.
The Saints recruited Lovett in a three-year deal believed to be worth about $350,000 per season. Axing him could cost the club $1 million but it is more likely the Saints would instead attempt to negotiate a severance payment.

St Kilda looking to sack Lovett
CAROLINE WILSON
February 16, 2010
ANY flimsy hope Andrew Lovett held of resuming an AFL career looks finished. St Kilda was working through last night to find the best of several legal avenues to dismiss the footballer charged late yesterday on one count of rape. Whether or not the Saints succeed they appear determined to cut him no matter the outcome.
The leadership group at St Kilda do not want the former Essendon midfielder at the club, the board do not want to be associated with him and everyone concerned must be wondering just how it was they traded a first-round draft pick for a player with Lovett's personal history.
Not to mention handing him a three-year, $1 million contract. Under AFL rules the club must continue to pay Lovett despite standing him down and although there was no indication last night that the player would abandon his grievance claim, success there for him appears unlikely.
Lovett, who is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday as a result of an incident on Christmas eve which saw a woman accuse him of sexual assault, wants to train with St Kilda but the AFL has the power to intervene.

SEN just said St Kilda has announced they will be holding a press conference at 3pm this arvo with Ross Lyon and co.
-
No-one cares his career finished
his off to jail.
-
Sounds like they are going to give Lovett the flick today.
Geez St Kilda really stuffed up their recruiting. Lost a first round pick plus Luke Ball for nothing. If the season doesn't go as expected or they cop key injuries and slip down the ladder we could see them implode once again. Well we can only hope ;D.
-
It's the sides that start to slide in the next few years that are going to struggle most with the compromised drafts. St Kilda have stuffed up the first of these compromised drafts.
-

True al. Having a first pick in the mid-20s is effectively losing a first round pick. You'll be lucky to pick up two decent kids with just two picks in the top 60. Top sides are going to be forced to trade for players (unless they can get an early pick off GC17 and GWS for a player). I reckon the Pies are another who are heading towards the edge of the cliff. If they don't win a flag in the next 2-3 years it's going to be hard for them with so many of their senior core only with a couple of years left of peak footy in them. Malthouse has topped up for himself and poor old Bucks will be left with the mess. Watch their feral supporters turn on a favourite son :whistle.

Lovett has been sacked by St Kilda effective immediately

What if he's innocent?

then he will sue there arses of. get his full contract+future loss of earnings+interest. If he goes to court and is found not guilty St Kilda are screwed.

Should have just kept him suspended. He could get off on a technicality, anything.
-
Yep. Dangerous precedent being set by St. Kilda here.
-
the big problem isnt his contract, the problem is his future loss of earnings, if hes not guilty and sues st kilda and wins compo on future loss of earnings + interest, his current contract will look like chicken feed compo wise.
-
They said St Kilda have covered themselves by saying they sacked him for pretty much breaking team rules.
-

-
Lovett is innocent till proven guilty true but he was not sacked just for his new charge of rape
He was sacked because he continuely breaks club rules.
He had problems at Essendon & had not even played a game or properly trained with the Saints & his broke several club rules which was regarded very serious.
His a loose cannon & deserves what he got. He will never play AFL football again & may well just go play at a outback reservation & hide
St-Kilda done the right thing & has also saved them alot of money. Lovett broke his side of the contract, they owe him nothing the contract was torn up ;D

Were his problems common knowledge and the Saints drafted him knowing he was a loose cannon?
-
Lovett should be found guilty for being a tool.
he is an A grade fukwit innocent or guilty.
Stkilda have won only 1 flag and this wont help their cause. Its actually something not even we would do, recruit a loser like then lose a player like Ball for donuts. Yep real smart!!
LMAO at the Saints not taking Cuz but then take Lovett in the draft. They look like the biggest clowns right now.
Matty Knights take a bow and Ross Lyon your just an idiot
-
St Kilda just ignored Lovett's history because they wanted his pace in the midfield which they lacked on GF day (the reason they didn't want Ball anymore). That lack of due diligence has come back to bite them big time. What makes it more stunning if they made such a big deal of "not taking the risk" when bypassing Cuz. Getting within a kick of a flag has flawed their judgement in desperation.

Interesting question. Lovett is now not on their playing list so maybe not. St Kilda are saying he was sacked for other reasons on top of this to try and cover themselves. Totally different circumstances but they (thanks to Grant Thomas) sacked Capuano mid-contract so the Saints have done it before.

Answer to your question is yes
They secured him fully knowing his previous convictions
They secured him because of his talent which unfortunately has gone wasted & a great lose to AFL football

His not intitled to any payout payment. He was sacked within the terms of his contract. he will get his severence pay which after his club fines he will owe them money lol ;D

Saints' reasons for sacking flimsy: Andrew Lovett's lawyer

ANDREW Lovett's legal team says St Kilda does not have a strong justification for sacking the wayward forward.
Speaking this afternoon, Lovett's lawyer said the player remains determined to take his case to the AFL's grievance tribunal and will consider court action if that does not happen.

'Bullied' Lovett in $2m bid
SAMANTHA LANE
February 18, 2010
ANDREW Lovett will claim that St Kilda subjected him to workplace bullying and - whether before the Supreme Court or the AFL grievance tribunal - is set to seek as much as $2 million in damages as part of his breach of contract claim.
The bullying aspect of his claim will cite the same legislation that recently led to four men and the company that runs Hawthorn eatery Cafe Vamp pay a total of $335,000 after they were convicted of failing to take reasonable care for the health and safety of waitress Brodie Panlock.
The teenager was found to have experienced relentless bullying at work before she committed suicide.
The Age has learnt that Lovett's lawyers, Lander& Rogers, are preparing to raise the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act as part of Lovett's case against St Kilda.
The relevance of the Act, in the eyes of the legal advisors the sacked footballer has engaged specifically to handle his contractual situation - as opposed to his rape charge - is that it legislates that employers must provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk.
It will be argued that St Kilda, by deliberately excluding Lovett from the main playing group and denying him access to the club's facilities and resources during his period of indefinite suspension, had contravened those laws.
In the notice of complaint prepared by Lovett's lawyers for the AFL grievance tribunal - the sitting of which is now unclear given Lovett's sacking on Tuesday - various examples that Lovett's lawyers say constitute workplace bullying are provided. They include:
* Lovett's enforced isolation from St Kilda's playing and coaching group from the time he became the subject of a police investigation that this week resulted in a charge of rape.
* A claim that St Kilda's senior coach Ross Lyon has not contacted Lovett since December 24.
* Lovett's exclusion from a team photo that appeared in the Herald Sun on February 2.
Lovett's mental health - the player went public about his battle with depression in 2006 - is raised in the notice.
Lovett's legal team believes that St Kilda has provided him with insufficient support in respect of the allegations made against him.
The Age learnt yesterday that Lovett's lawyers were also investigating a text message they believe was sent to St Kilda's playing list, which allegedly told players that Lovett should not be contacted.
Lovett has told his lawyers that he has only had contact with three Saints players since the alleged incident in the early hours of December 24.
He has told his lawyers those players are Brendon Goddard, Leigh Montagna and Raphael Clarke.
St Kilda, the AFL and the AFL Players Association are aware of the contents of Lovett's grievance claim, which was lodged last week as part of the AFL's grievance tribunal procedures.
While it remains unclear whether the grievance tribunal will hear the case, given the Saints believe it is now void since Lovett is no longer employed as an AFL player, his legal team would take similar arguments to the Supreme Court if necessary.
Lovett's lawyers believe he has a strong case against St Kilda regardless of the criminal charge he now faces, because the football club chose to ostracise him before the determination of the criminal matter that will go before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
On top of the three-year base contract worth more than $1 million Lovett had with the Saints, the player could have earned as much as $625,000 through performance-based incentives.
Lovett, whom St Kilda picked up from Essendon by trading its first pick of last November's national draft, stood to earn an extra $125,000 this season depending on his placing in St Kilda's best and fairest award, and whether he was selected in the All-Australian team.
In 2011 and 2012, the player could have earned an additional $250,000 each year on top of his base pay.

-
Regardless of the claims about breach of contract blah blah, the 'aints could end up with egg on their face here.
They suspended him shortly after the accusations were made and then terminated his contract shortly after charges were laid.
This could get veeerryy messy.
-
Whether Lovett's claim has any substance or not this is the last thing St Kilda wanted. The Saints sacked Lovett hoping to wash their hands of him and not have their club associated with a court case that could drag on for a couple of years. This claim will now drag out even further as it depends on the court result of Lovett's rape charge. If he's found guilty then St Kilda are okay but if Lovett is found not guilty then he and his lawyer will go all out for compo. $2m would put a dent in the Saints' finances as they aren't a wealthy club. They only just made a profit despite making the GF.
-
SACKED player Andrew Lovett has had an important early win against St Kilda, winning the right to take his case before the AFL grievance tribunal.
The three-man panel of chairman Jack Rush QC, Kevin Power and James Dowsley then took just over an hour to decide their rulings.
Crucially, they ruled that Lovett remained a player under the terms of the AFL collective bargaining agreement, despite his sacking.
